Encore Renewable Energy in Burlington lands financing for solar arrays

A Burlington renewable energy company has secured $389 million in financing from Toronto-based Brookfield, one of the largest investment companies in the world with more than $1 trillion under management.
Chris Clement, chief financial officer of Encore Renewable Energy, told the Burlington Free Press that the commitment by Brookfield helps to “validate” Encore as a leading renewable energy developer and operator, primarily of solar arrays, but also of battery energy storage projects.
“We’re a growing company in the early stages of having established ourselves as a leading independent power producer in the Northeast, and even nationally,” Clement said. “Brookfield helps validate the market view of Encore.”
A $1 billion pipeline of projects averaging about $15 million each
Encore has about 100 projects in its development pipeline, worth more than $1 billion in total, according to Clement. The company’s niche is not large, utility-scale solar arrays, but rather arrays covering 15 to 30 acres, averaging about $15 million each.

“We’re really good at developing projects, but no one has a perfect track record,” Clement said. “Some will fall away, there’s a constant churn of advancing development, adding sites and building out the pipeline.”
With the support of Brookfield, and Zurich, Switzerland-based SUSI Partners, a majority owner of Encore, Clement said the company will be able to dramatically accelerate its ability to get projects done, even with the uncertainty surrounding the new Trump administration.
“There’s nothing partisan about what we’re doing,” he said. “The large majority of our work takes place in rural areas, where we think we’re a key contributor to economic development, providing landowners, often farmers, with alternative income streams otherwise not available to them.”
Investment tax credits important to the solar industry, but not irreplaceable
Currently, the renewable energy industry is built around federal investment tax credits that companies like Encore can sell to other companies at 90 to 94 cents on the dollar for them to use against their tax liabilities. But even if those tax credits go away, Clement said the industry is mature enough to find another way to continue moving forward.
“We’re confident we have enough stability in the policy landscape for us to operate without too much concern,” he said. “We hope (Brookfield’s investment) is a signal that private capital agrees. They would be on the sideline if they were concerned.”
Latest investment from Brookfield has Encore’s home office feeling crowded
Encore’s construction portfolio is centered on the Northeast, but it has projects in Illinois, as far west as Colorado and New Mexico, and as far south as South Carolina. Notably, Clement said the company stays out of the renewable markets in Texas and California.
“Those are very large, active, crowded markets,” he said.
Encore does a lot of work in Vermont, and nearly two-thirds of its roughly 50 employees are in Vermont, with offices at Hula, the co-working campus off of Pine Street in Burlington, on the shores of Lake Champlain.
“It’s feeling pretty crowded in there,” Clement said of the company offices. “We’re adding a lot of engineers and construction managers and more members to the finance team to support this scaling effort.”

2025 NFC Championship: Jalen Carter humbled by Aaron Donald comments after saving Eagles year, set for encore
PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Carter has the drive to be great. When Sunday rolls around, the Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle excepts nothing less.
But even Carter is humbled. When one of the greatest defensive players of all time gives Carter a shoutout, all Carter could do was smile.
Eagles legend LeSean McCoy revealed on Fox Sports 1 he spoke to Donald, a friend of McCoy’s and fellow Pitt alum, as the future Hall of Famer give the highest praise to Carter.
“I haven’t watched football like that in a long time, Donald told McCoy. “That guy Jalen Carter, bro. My replacement is here.”
When Carter was informed of Donald’s comments, the reaction was wholesome.
“That’s nice man. I always wanted to talk to AD,” Carter said. “Just to hear that from him, one of the best, and I watched his film and learned from him. That means a lot…That’s love from an OG right there. I really don’t know what else to say.
“If I’m getting that from him, that means something right there.”
Carter had one of the most dominant performances in Eagles playoff history in last week’s divisional round victory over the Los Angeles Rams. He finished with five tackles, two sacks, seven pressures, three quarterback hits, and a forced fumble in the 28-22 victory — with his two biggest plays in the fourth quarter. His forced fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter led to the Eagles extending their lead, but the biggest play was a sack on Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford on a third-and-2 at the Eagles’ 13 with 1:14 left in the Eagles clinging to a 28-22 lead. On the next play, Carter hit Stafford and forced an incompletion that sealed the Eagles win.
Carter saved the Eagles season. he doesn’t look at it that way, part of what makes him great.
“It made me feel good. But you know, it really don’t hit until like later on,” Carter said. “We all celebrating there. You know, I’m getting all the [accolades] as you mentioned. I’m like I might [have won the game] but at the end it’s still a team game, like we all had to do what we had to do.
“I know that one play is a big play, but at the end of the day, everybody still had to do their job.”
Carter is the one player on the Eagles defense the Washington Commanders have to account for at all times. He’s the one that can change the game for Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels as well.
Sunday could be an encore performance for Carter, who is already tabbed as the next Aaron Donald.

The first game of the U.S. men’s national team’s January camp went about as well as it could have. A young, inexperienced USMNT squad squashed a young, inexperienced Venezuela squad 3-1 on Saturday. What mattered most, though, were the individual performances.
For those who shined, the opportunity to impress Mauricio Pochettino isn’t over. And for those who didn’t? There’s another shot.
The USMNT will be back in action on Wednesday night in Orlando, where they’ll face Costa Rica in the final game of this January camp. The squad is unchanged, with the same MLS-heavy 21-player group still in camp and looking to make their mark ahead of much bigger games down the line.
Some have capitalized on the opportunity – Jack McGlynn, Matko Miljevic and Patrick Agyemang, for starters. All three stepped up in the win over Venezuela, as all three scored their first international goals. Others, though, will hope Wednesday is their turn.

Roquan Smith & Ravens’ Zach Orr can build off the defensive encore
Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr and linebacker Roquan Smith have fully amalgamated after 18 weeks of NFL football. Orr and Smith just aren’t allowing anybody to pummel the Ravens up front when it comes to defending the run. Orr likes to stuff opponents on first and second downs, force them into passing situations, and then unleash his pass rush that has rendered 54 sacks this season. The 54 sacks helped the team rank No. 2 in the NFL in sacks this season.
Last night, the Steelers had 29 rushing yards through 11 carries. With the Ravens’ offense firing on all cylinders, Orr can continue the onslaught, forcing opponents into one-dimensional play-calling and frustration.
In hindsight, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson did finish the game, having completed 20 of his 29 pass attempts, including two impressive touchdown passes. However, Orr is doing his best to accommodate the flaws in the defense’s back end by ensuring he coaches his team to give up minimal yards and points.
After both Roquan Smith and Zach Orr had impressive seasons on the defensive side of the ball, the duo has the potential to build off their success and continue to make a significant impact for their respective teams. Smith, the standout linebacker for the Chicago Bears, had a stellar year with 139 tackles, 6 sacks, and 2 interceptions.
