  • Exclusive: DHS ends teleworking, requires employees to work in person


    Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman on Monday evening ordered all DHS employees back to work, following an executive order from President Donald Trump on his first day in office, according to an internal memo obtained by ABC News.

    The order effectively and abruptly ended teleworking at the department.

    Huffman said that while remote work “can be an important tool under the right circumstances,” it can also be rife with abuse.

    Huffman said that in 2024, 28.9% of total hours worked the Federal Emergency Management Agency and 24.4% of total hours worked by U.S. Coast Guard personnel — a branch of the armedservices tasked with protecting our coasts — were done remotely.

    He also said that for the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, 39.7% of hours worked were remote.

    “These numbers are unacceptable,” Huffman wrote. “It is the policy of this agency for employees to work at their duty station — whether in an office or in the field — to the maximum extent.”

    Huffman also said that within 30 days, each component of DHS would need to submit a report regarding all officials who have not returned to work, the reasons for it and documentation supporting the reason for each official’s continuing remote work.

    “Reasons might include lack of adequate office space, physical inability of the employee, or a legal impediment,” he wrote.

    “Any guidance, policy, or directive of this agency that is inconsistent with this memorandum is hereby rescinded, to the extent consistent with applicable legal requirements,” Huffman added.

    Huffman’s instructions followed a return-to-work mandate for federal workers that was signed by Trump on his first day back in the White House.

  • How Trump could try to stay in power after his second term ends


    Think Donald Trump can’t be president after his second term is up in January 2029? Think again.

    When President-elect Donald Trump met with congressional Republicans shortly after his November 2024 election victory, he floated the idea of another term: “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s so good we’ve got to figure something else out.’”

    At first glance, this seems like an obvious joke. The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution is clear that Trump can’t be elected again. The text of the amendment states:

    “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

    That amendment was passed in response to Franklin Roosevelt’s four elections to the presidency. Since George Washington had stepped down at the end of his second term, no president had sought a third term, much less a fourth. The amendment was clearly meant to prevent presidents from serving more than two terms in office.

    Because Trump has been elected president twice already, the plain language of the amendment bars him from being elected a third time. Some have argued that since Trump’s terms were nonconsecutive, the amendment doesn’t apply to him. But the amendment makes no distinction between consecutive and nonconsecutive terms in office.

    Though the 22nd Amendment prohibits Trump from being elected president again, it does not prohibit him from serving as president beyond Jan. 20, 2029. The reason for this is that the 22nd Amendment only prohibits someone from being “elected” more than twice. It says nothing about someone becoming president in some other way than being elected to the office.

    Skirting the rules

    There are a few potential alternate scenarios. Under normal circumstances, they would be next to impossible. But Donald Trump has never been a normal president.

    On issue after issue, Trump has pushed the outer limits of presidential power. Most importantly, he has already shown his willingness to bend or even break the law to stay in office. And while Trump claims he’s only joking when he floats the idea of a third term, he has a long history of using “jokes” as a way of floating trial balloons.

    Furthermore, once he leaves office, Trump could once again face the prospect of criminal prosecution and possibly jail time, further motivating him to stay in power. As Trump’s second term progresses, don’t be surprised if Americans hear more about how he might try to stay in office. Here is what the Constitution says about that prospect.

    Other ways to become president

    Nine people have served as president without first being elected to that office. John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Gerald Ford were all vice presidents who stepped into the office when their predecessors either died or resigned.

    The 22nd Amendment does not bar a term-limited president from being elected vice president. On the other hand, the 12th Amendment does state that “no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of the President shall be eligible to that of the Vice-President of the United States.”

    It’s not clear whether this restriction applies to a two-term president who is ineligible for a third term because of the 22nd Amendment – or whether it merely imposes on the vice president the Constitution’s other criteria for presidential eligibility, namely that they be a natural-born citizen of the United States, at least 35 years of age and have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years.

    That question would have to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Should the justices decide in Trump’s favor – as they have recently on questions regarding the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause and presidential immunity – then the 2024 ticket of Trump-Vance could become the 2028 Vance-Trump ticket. If elected, Vance could then resign, making Trump president again.

    No resignation needed

    But Vance would not even have to resign in order for a Vice President Trump to exercise the power of the presidency. The 25th Amendment to the Constitution states that if a president declares that “he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office … such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.”

    In fact, the U.S. has had three such acting presidents – George H.W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Kamala Harris. All of them held presidential power for a brief period when the sitting president underwent anesthesia during medical procedures; Cheney did it twice.

    In this scenario, shortly after taking office on Jan. 20, 2029, President Vance could invoke the 25th Amendment by notifying the speaker of the House and the president pro tempore of the Senate that he is unable to discharge the duties of president. He would not need to give any reason or proof of this incapacity.

    Vice President Trump would then become acting president and assume the powers of the presidency until such time as President Vance issued a new notification indicating that he was able to resume his duties as president.

    ‘Tandemocracy’

    But exercising the power of the presidency doesn’t even necessarily require being president or acting president.

    Trump has repeatedly expressed his admiration for autocratic Russian President Vladimir Putin, so he might want to follow the example of the Medvedev-Putin “tandemocracy.”

    In 2008, term limits in the Russian constitution prevented Putin from running for president after two consecutive terms. Instead, he selected a loyal subordinate, Dmitry Medvedev, to run for president.

    When elected, Medvedev appointed Putin as his prime minister. By most accounts, Putin remained firmly in power and made most of the important decisions. Following this example, a future Republican president could appoint Trump to an executive branch position from which he could still exercise power.

    In 2012, Putin was able to run for president again, and he and Medvedev once again swapped roles. Since then, Putin has succeeded in amending the Russian Constitution to effectively allow him to remain president for the rest of his life.

    Using a figurehead

    Then again, Trump might just want to avoid all of these legal subterfuges by following the example of George and Lurleen Wallace. In 1966, the Alabama Constitution prevented Wallace from running for a third consecutive term as governor. Still immensely popular and unwilling to give up power, Wallace chose to have his wife, Lurleen, run for governor. It was clear from the beginning that Lurleen was just a figurehead for George, who promised to be an adviser to his wife, at a salary of $1 a year.

    The campaign’s slogan of “Two Governors, One Cause,” made it clear that a vote for Lurleen was really a vote for George.

    Lurleen won in a landslide.

    According to one account of her time in office, the Wallaces had “something of a Queen-Prime Minister relationship: Mrs. Wallace handles the ceremonial and formal duties of state. Mr. Wallace draws the grand outlines of state policy and sees that it is carried out.”

    Trump’s wife was not born a U.S. citizen and therefore isn’t eligible to be president. But as the head of the Republican Party, Trump could ensure that the next GOP presidential candidate was a member of his family or some other person who would be absolutely loyal and obedient to him. If that person went on to win the White House in 2028, Trump could serve as an unofficial adviser, allowing him to continue to wield the power of the presidency without the actual title.

  • Novak Djokovic ends Channel 9 boycott as Tennis Australia makes decision on punishment


    A Channel 9 source has told Yahoo Sport Australia that Novak Djokovic will commit to a post-match on-court interview with the TV network should he overpower Carlos Alcaraz in Tuesday night’s quarter-final at the Australian Open. It’s understood the 24-time grand slam winner has buried the hatchet with Channel 9 after a well-publicised falling out with the tournament broadcaster and will field questions from court-side interviewer Jim Courier if he beats Alcaraz.

    The 37-year-old refused to be interviewed on court after winning his fourth-round match, angered by comments from Channel 9 host Tony Jones which Djokovic found offensive to the Serbian community. It’s believed the Djokovic camp has since accepted Jones’ apology and will now let the matter rest.

    A source involved with Channel 9’s coverage told Yahoo Sport Australia: “We’ve been led to believe it will be business as usual should Novak be required for interview.”

    News of Djokovic’s change of stance comes on the back of reports he will escape a fine for failing to engage with Courier on Sunday night. It’s believed Tennis Australia will take no action in a move that is sure to come in for heavy scrutiny amid concerns it sets a precedent.

    Djokovic’s on-court boycott caught Courier by surprise but the American took no offence to the snub. “I certainly didn’t expect Novak to look at me with a quizzical look like, ‘Why are you out here?’” Courier told Tennis Channel Live. “I think he thought that we should have known that he wasn’t going to do that. I had no inside information.

    “There was no problem on the court, but once he said he didn’t want to do the interview, that’s fine. We had a discussion in the hallway (with his management) and they wanted to make sure they knew that I knew that it wasn’t anything personal towards me (and) I certainly knew that.”

    But Courier did remind Djokovic’s entourage of the lost opportunity. “I said ‘look, you’re not just speaking to Channel 9 – I’m not out here representing Channel 9, I’m representing Tennis Australia – and this is an interview that goes out to the world. And it’s a chance for all these players, not just Novak, to communicate directly to their fans, and I hope that they’ll realise that there’s more opportunity for good there than making a point.”

    Courier added: “While this is not a super great thing for the tournament, I think for Novak it might turn out to be a net positive because he is definitely motivated in a big way for lots of reasons.”

  • Auburn a unanimous No. 1, Duke now No. 2; Michigan St into top 10, Louisville ends AP Top 25 drought


    A wild week of upsets and court stormings led to a massive shakeup in the AP Top 25.

    One constant: Auburn.

    The Tigers were the unanimous pick at No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released on Monday, holding on to the top spot following a week in which 19 ranked teams lost at least once — including seven teams in the top 10.

    Auburn claimed the program’s second No. 1 ranking last week and won both its games despite playing without injured big man Johni Broome. The Tigers rolled over No. 14 Mississippi State 88-66 and survived a late comeback to beat then-No. 19 Georgia 70-68.

    No. 2 Duke moved up a spot after winning both of its games last week and swapped places with No. 3 Iowa State, which blew out No. 12 Kansas but lost to No. 23 West Virginia. Alabama and Florida rounded out the top five despite each losing a game last week.

    Only three teams — Alabama, Florida and No. 6 Tennessee — held the same spot from a week ago. The chaotic week allowed No. 8 Michigan State to move into the top 10 for the first time this season and No. 22 Missouri into the poll for the first time since 2022-23.

    Louisville’s climb

    Louisville has made quite a turnaround under first-year coach Pat Kelsey.

    The Cardinals won a combined 12 games the previous two seasons, but are playing some of their best basketball in years. Following a three-game skid, Louisville has won eight straight to move into the poll for the first time in four years at No. 25. Last week, the Cardinals won at Syracuse for the first time in eight years and capped the week by sweeping Virginia for the first time since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013.

    Rising Red Storm

    No. 20 St. John’s moved back into the poll this week and has its highest ranking since reaching No. 15 on Dec. 29, 2014, under coach Steve Lavin. The Red Storm, in their second season under Rick Pitino, moved into first place in the Big East with their win over Seton Hall and Marquette’s loss to Xavier. They haven’t won a share of the Big East regular-season title since 1992.

    St. John’s (16-3) is off to its best start through 19 games since opening 17-2 (ultimately 20-2) in 1985-86. And the Johnnies are 7-1 in Big East play for the first time since opening 8-1 in 1998-99.

    Rising and falling

    No. 11 Purdue and No. 18 Wisconsin had the biggest jump among the teams in the poll, each climbing six spots. No. 16 Ole Miss is up five places after splitting games against No. 4 Alabama and No. 14 Mississippi State.

    No. 24 Memphis had the week’s biggest drop, losing six places after losing to Temple and beating Charlotte. Two-time NCAA champion UConn lost five places to No. 19 after seeing its 28-game home winning streak end in a 68-63 loss to Creighton.

    Welcome back

    No. 22 Missouri is ranked for the first time this year after ending Florida’s 16-game home winning streak and posting an 18-point win over Arkansas. No. 23 West Virginia is back in the poll after taking down Iowa State.

    Louisville had not been ranked since reaching No. 25 on Jan. 25, 2021.

    Farewell (for now)

    Three ranked teams lost both of their games last week and dropped out of the poll.

    Gonzaga lost to Oregon State and Santa Clara, falling out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since early last year. Georgia dropped out from No. 23 following losses to Tennessee and Auburn. Baylor, No. 25 a week ago, is out after after losses to Arizona and TCU.

    Utah State’s stint in the AP Top 25 lasted two weeks. The Aggies dropped out from No. 22 following a 65-62 loss to UNLV.

    Conference watch

    The SEC has eight ranked teams after Georgia dropped out of the poll, including five in the top 10.

    The Big Ten was next with six, followed by the Big 12 with five. The Big East and Atlantic Coast each had two ranked teams, with American Athletic and Mountain West conferences at one each.

  • Trump ends CBP One, a Biden-era border app that gave legal entry to nearly 1 million migrants


    WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration Monday ended use of a border app called CBP One that has allowed nearly 1 million people to legally enter the United States with eligibility to work.

    A notice on the website of Customs and Border Protection Monday just after Trump was sworn in let users know that the app that had been used to allow migrants to schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry is no longer available. The notice said that existing appointments have been cancelled.

    The move adheres to a promise Trump made during his campaign and will please critics who say it was an overly generous magnet for more people to come to Mexico’s border with the United States.

    The CBP One app has been wildly popular. It is an online lottery system to give appointments to 1,450 people a day at eight border crossings. They enter on immigration “parole,” a presidential authority that Joe Biden used more than any other president since it was introduced in 1952.

    WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will sign a series of executive orders designed to beef up security at the southern border by relying more on the U.S. military and redefining who gets to become an American, preparing to make good on his defining political promise to crack down on immigration.

    But actual execution of such a far-reaching immigration agenda is certain to face legal and logistical challenges.

    “I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places in which they came,” said Trump to thunderous applause Monday as he spoke during his inauguration moments after being sworn into office.

    The orders were also previewed Monday by an incoming White House official before Trump takes office will aim to end asylum access, send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, suspend the refugee program, force people seeking asylum to wait in Mexico and end birthright citizenship. There was little detail on specifically how these broad plans would be executed.

    Many of the steps echoed previous ones during Trump’s first administration that also faced lawsuits. Others — like the effort to end the constitutional right to automatic citizenship for anyone born in the U.S. — marked sweeping new strategies that are expected to elicit pushback in the courts.

    The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details before the orders are signed, some of them soon after he’s inaugurated Monday.

    Immigrant communities around the country have been bracing for a crackdown that the incoming Republican president had been promising throughout his campaign and again at a rally Sunday.

    The orders previewed were less specific about how Trump will fulfill his pledge of mass deportations of at least 11 million people already in the country illegally. One edict will equip immigration officers with “authorities needed” to enforce the law.

    Trump and his aides have repeatedly said they would scrap President Joe Biden’s deportation priorities, which focused on people with criminal records and those who are national security threats, to include all people without legal status.

    A key announcement was the effort to end birthright citizenship — one of Trump’s most sweeping immigration efforts yet.

    Birthright citizenship means anyone born in the United States automatically becomes an American citizen, a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment that was ratified in 1868 in the wake of the Civil War and assured citizenship for all, including Black people.

    It applies to children born to someone in the country illegally or in the U.S. on a tourist or student visa who plans to return to their home country. Trump’s effort to end that right is certain to face steep legal challenges, and the incoming White House official provided no information on how he intends to carry it out.

    Trump also intends to suspend refugee resettlement for four months, the official said. That’s a program that for decades has allowed hundreds of thousands of people from around the world fleeing war and persecution to come to the United States.

    Trump similarly suspended the refugee program at the beginning of his first term, and then after reinstating it, cut the numbers of refugees admitted into the country every year.

    The Trump administration also intends to designate criminal cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and specifically aims to crack down on the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and will remove those gang members from the country. The homegrown street gang was born in Venezuela but has become a menace even on American soil and exploded into the U.S. presidential campaign amid a spree of kidnappings, extortion and other crimes throughout the western hemisphere tied to a mass exodus of Venezuelan migrants.

    The incoming administration also will order an end to releasing migrants in the U.S. while they await immigration court hearings, a practice known as “catch-and-release,” but officials didn’t say how they would pay for the enormous costs associated with detention.

    Trump plans to “end asylum,” presumably going beyond what Biden has done to severely restrict it. It is unclear what the incoming administration will do with people of nationalities whose countries don’t take back their citizens, such as Nicaragua and Venezuela.

    And it would reinstate the first Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forced about 70,000 asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court. That measure would require cooperation from Mexico, and it is unclear how it jibes with pledges to end asylum altogether.

    Mexico, a country integral to any American effort to limit illegal immigration, weighed in Monday morning, indicating they were prepared to receive asylum seekers that the U.S. makes wait in Mexico while emphasizing that there should be some sort of online application allowing them to schedule appointments at the U.S. border.

    Currently there’s an online process called CBP One that was used by the Biden administration that has allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants into the country to pursue asylum claims. Although there was no specific reference to CBP One during the call with reporters Monday, incoming officials have repeatedly said they will ax it immediately along with another program that allowed 30,000 migrants from four countries to enter the U.S. provided they have a financial sponsor.

    Trump will order the government, with Defense Department assistance, to “finish” construction of the border wall, though the official didn’t say how much territory that would cover. Barriers currently span about 450 miles (720 kilometers), slightly more than one-third of the border. Many areas that aren’t covered are in Texas, including inhospitable terrain where migrants rarely cross.

    Sending troops to the border is a strategy that Trump has used before, as has Biden. In 2018, Trump deployed 800 active-duty troops to assist Border Patrol personnel in processing large migrant caravans. And in 2023, with the U.S. preparing to end pandemic-era restrictions on immigration, the Biden administration sent 1,500 active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

    Both administrations also used National Guard troops along the border.

    The official did not say how many troops Trump was planning to send, saying that would be up to the secretary of defense or what their role would be when they get there.

    Historically, troops have been used to back up Border Patrol agents, who are responsible for securing the nearly 2,000-mile border separating the U.S. from Mexico and not in roles that put them in direct contact with migrants.

    Critics have said that sending troops to the border sends the signal that migrants are a threat.

  • EA’s Origin app is officially shutting down as 32-bit support ends


    Origin, the PC games store and PC client that Electronic Arts first introduced in 2011, is coming to an end later this year. While the currently available EA app and store did evolve from the classic Origin experience and have almost entirely taken over operations, the old app has still been available for some users. However, EA has finally announced that Origin’s days are numbered.

    The company announced the shutdown on a support page, revealing an April 17, 2025, final date for the software. It said Microsoft dropping support for 32-bit software is the reason behind the complete removal.

    “On April 17, 2025, Origin will shut down, as Microsoft has stopped supporting 32-bit software,” says the support document found on ea.com. “If you use Origin, you need to upgrade to the EA app, which requires a 64-bit version of Windows.”

    EA began the task of fully replacing Origin with its new EA App back in 2022, following a long beta period. The Origin client still remained active so far due to its use by macOS players as well as those still on 32-bit versions of Windows. But now, macOS support is available on the EA App, and 32-bit support is being phased out entirely, with EA encouraging PC players to upgrade.

    “The EA app is our enhanced platform for PC games,” says the company describing its latest platform. “Optimized for the best user experience, it lets you easily find what you need and get into the game quicker than ever.”

    EA also assures players that all their games will still be attached to their account when moving to the EA app or when upgrading operating systems. Games won’t need to be re-downloaded either, while playtime counters and any cloud storage being used for saves will also automatically transfer.





    It’s official – EA’s Origin app is shutting down as 32-bit support comes to an end. This decision comes as more and more software developers are transitioning to 64-bit platforms, leaving older systems in the dust.
