Deshaun Watson ends breakup speculation with birthday note to girlfriend

Deshaun Watson went all out for his girlfriend, Jilly Anais, on her 29th birthday on Thursday.

The Browns quarterback, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury against the Bengals in Week 7, decorated their Miami apartment with red and gold balloons before taking her to a private seafood dinner on a yacht, as seen in a video she posted to Instagram.

“Happy Birthday To You Queen!” Watson, also 29, wrote in a separate post, including photos of the couple. “4ever love you ma! Grateful to celebrate with you! Continue to smile and inspire! May The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace! More Glory Luv and Let this year be full of Blessings, Health, and Success! .”

Anais commented with, “Thank you to the love of my life! I love you with all of my being! .”

The couple is clearly going strong after Watson stirred buzz on Christmas with a TikTok video that spoke about letting go of someone you love if they try to disrupt your peace.

“I say this every year, but this was the best birthday ever,” Anais wrote on her Instagram Story.

Watson gifted the model — who walked in the Sports Illustrated Runway Show at Miami Swim Week last year — with a crocodile red Birkin bag and a bracelet in 18K rose gold by Van Cleef & Arpels, which costs $19,300.

“Thank you baby,” she said in the clip before dancing around the room.

The pair has been dating since her split from Pelicans point guard Dejounte Murray in 2018.

Anais stayed with Watson and they remained united after allegations of sexual misconduct by roughly two dozen massage therapists against the quarterback were first made public in March 2021.

The Pro Bowl signal caller, who has maintained his innocence, later served an 11-game suspension during the 2022 season and was fined $5 million.

Watson signed a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns in March 2022.

It came after he requested a trade out of Houston in January 2021.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson took to Instagram to put an end to breakup rumors swirling around his relationship with longtime girlfriend Jilly Anais. In a heartfelt birthday post dedicated to Anais, Watson expressed his love for her and shared a series of sweet photos of the couple together.

The post, captioned “Happy Birthday Queen !! The light you bring into my life is truly amazing. I appreciate you more than you know. I love you ,” quickly put an end to any speculation that the two were on the rocks.

Fans of the couple flooded the comments section with well wishes and messages of support, with many expressing their happiness that the pair is still going strong.

It’s clear that despite any rumors or speculation, Watson and Anais are still very much in love and committed to their relationship. Here’s to many more years of happiness for the happy couple!

  • See the Video Blake Lively Was Shown By ‘It Ends With Us’ Producer That She Claims Was Inappropriate

See the Video Blake Lively Was Shown By ‘It Ends With Us’ Producer That She Claims Was Inappropriate

Justin Baldoni submitted evidence to fire back at Blake Lively’s claims a producer showed her an inappropriate video on the set of It End With Us.

Justin, 40, who directed the film, and producer Jamey Heath included a screenshot of the video in question as part of their lawsuit against The New York Times over an article it published.

In Blake’s separate lawsuit accusing Justin and Jamey of sexual harassment on set, the actress accused Jamey of showing her and her assistant a video she believed to be “pornography” at first.

Her suit claimed, “To add insult to injury, Mr. Heath approached Ms. Lively and her assistant on set and started playing a video of a fully nude woman with her legs spread apart. Ms. Lively thought he was showing her pornography and stopped him. Mr. Heath explained that the video was his wife giving birth.”

    The Video

    The Video

Blake’s lawyer wrote, “Ms. Lively was alarmed and asked Mr. Heath if his wife knew he was sharing the video, to which he replied ‘She isn’t weird about this stuff,’ as if Ms. Lively was weird for not welcoming it. Ms. Lively and her assistant excused themselves, stunned that Mr. Heath had shown them a nude video.”

In Justin and Jamey’s lawsuit against The New York Times, they present a much different story than Blake, 37.

    Blake

    Blake

Lawyers for the duo said, “The Times compounded its journalistic failures by uncritically advancing Lively’s unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment against Heath and Baldoni. For example, the Article, based on Lively’s [complaint], sensationally alleges that ‘Mr. Heath had shown [Lively] a video of his naked wife,’ with Lively’s [complaint] even labeling the footage as pornography.’ This claim is patently absurd. The video in question was a (non-pornographic) recording of Heath’s wife and baby during a home birth—a deeply personal one with no sexual overtone.”

Justin and Jamey’s filing added, “To distort this benign event into an act of sexual misconduct is outrageous and emblematic of the lengths to which Lively and her collaborators are willing to go to defame Plaintiffs.”

The lawyer added, “The video was shown to Lively as part of a creative discussion in preparation for a birthing scene in the Film. Heath informed Lively that his wife condoned his displaying the video. Any suggestion that Heath engaged in the exhibition of pornography or inappropriate content is false.”

A photo of the video shows a woman with a baby in her arms after giving birth, with a man sitting behind her, and light coming from above. Blake was not named as a defendant in the lawsuit against The New York Times.

As In Touch previously reported, the legal drama started when Blake filed a lawsuit accusing Justin and Jamey of sexual harassment on set of the 2024 film.

    Blake

    Blake

She claims they came into her trailer uninvited while she was breastfeeding on multiple occasions and had sexually charged conversations that made her uncomfortable. In addition, she claimed Justin criticized her weight and secretly called her personal trainer to imply that he wanted her to lose weight.

The actress claimed she made a list of demands she wanted Justin and Jamey to agree to before she returned to filming. The director and producer agreed to the demands.

However, in her lawsuit, Blake claims Justin hired a crisis PR team to smear her in retaliation for her complaining. For his part, Justin denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

He denied that he was inappropriate on set. His powerhouse lawyer, Bryan Freedman, said Blake filed the lawsuit to “fix her negative reputation,” and said the claims were “false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt.”

Justin has yet to respond to Blake’s lawsuit. The director and Jamey filed a $250 million lawsuit against The New York Times for running a story about Blake’s complaint with the California Civil Rights Department. Justin claimed the outlet and Blake’s team worked together to smear him with a one-sided article.

    Blake Lively

    Blake Lively

His lawyer claimed the outlet cherry-picked text messages to present the narrative Blake wanted pushed.

“The Times, however, was aware that these text messages were unscrupulously altered and selectively edited, enabling both Lively and her team and the Times to propagate a false ‘smear campaign’ narrative designed to destroy Plaintiffs,” the suit read.

In addition, Justin denied all of Blake’s claims. He addressed her claims about the personal trainer in his suit. His lawyer said, “Baldoni, while training for a physically demanding scene in which his character ‘Ryle’ would lift [Lively’s character], asked his trainer (who was introduced to him by Lively and oversaw his training for the Film) how much Lively weighed. Baldoni, who suffers from back issues and has multiple bulging discs, made the inquiry to ensure he could safely perform the lift without injury.”

Justin and Jamey also submitted alleged texts from Blake showing her inviting them into her trailer while she was breastfeeding.

A spokesperson for The New York Times, “Our story was meticulously and responsibly reported.”

The rep said the reporters had reviewed “thousands of pages of original documents, including the text messages and email that we quote accurately and at length in the article.”

In a recent interview, Blake Lively revealed that she was shown a video by the producer of ‘It Ends With Us’ that she found to be inappropriate. The actress, known for her roles in films such as ‘The Age of Adaline’ and ‘A Simple Favor’, opened up about the incident, stating that she felt uncomfortable and disturbed by the content of the video.

Lively did not go into specifics about the video, but she did express her disappointment in the producer for showing it to her. She emphasized the importance of creating a safe and respectful work environment, and spoke out against the behavior that led to her discomfort.

Fans of Lively and supporters of the #MeToo movement have praised her for speaking out about the incident, and have called for accountability and transparency in the entertainment industry. The actress’s courage in sharing her experience serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking up against inappropriate behavior and standing up for one’s boundaries.

As more details emerge about the incident, it is clear that Lively’s decision to speak out has sparked an important conversation about respect, boundaries, and accountability in Hollywood. It is crucial that all individuals, regardless of their status or power, are held to the same standards of conduct and treated with dignity and respect.

  • New Year’s Eve party at Fargo apartment ends in gunfire

New Year’s Eve party at Fargo apartment ends in gunfire

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Multiple people are recovering after a New Year’s Eve party at a Fargo apartment ended in gunfire.

A teen boy was arrested in the case Wednesday morning at his home in Glyndon, Minnesota on aggravated assault with a firearm.

“It was around 10: 15 p.m. I was laying down. I just wanted to go to bed,” Tanya Frank said. “Next thing you know, I heard shots fired.”

Frank is the one who called police. She’s come to know her neighbors well in her eight years at the Southwood Apartments, west of the Bowler.

“You don’t want anybody you love to get hurt,” she added.

Neighbors said a fight broke out in the hallway and a young mother of five stepped out to see what was going on. Four shots rang out and she was struck in the leg by a stray bullet.

“I called to see if she was ok, if she knew what was going on,” Frank said. “I found out she was in the hospital. Talking to her husband, going through the tears, it’s heartbreaking.”

“I hate to say it, but maybe don’t step in. Let the police show up, unfortunately,” neighbor Justin Wiedrich said. “You don’t know what’s happening or how dangerous it can be. She’s in the hospital and she’s a wonderful lady.”

Three others were hurt in the fight. They tell Valley News Live they were having a party when two teen boys, who they didn’t know, showed up.

“In 30 years I’ve seen quite a lot around here. Multiple shootings, assaults,” Wiedrich added. “Last night really took the cake. There was a police presence around the entire block, probably 15-20 cars, multiple officers.”

Those like Frank echoed his concerns.

“There’s a whole lot of problems with safety here,” Frank said. “I need to get out of here.”

Everyone involved is expected to be ok. Police are still investigating.

On New Year’s Eve, what was supposed to be a festive celebration at a Fargo apartment turned into a chaotic and dangerous scene as gunfire erupted. The party, which was attended by multiple people, quickly turned violent as shots were fired, causing panic and fear among the attendees.

Authorities were called to the scene and found multiple shell casings, but no injuries were reported. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown, and police are continuing to investigate the incident.

This alarming event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and responsibility during parties and gatherings, especially on holidays like New Year’s Eve. It is crucial to always be aware of your surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to authorities.

Let us hope that incidents like this can be prevented in the future, and that everyone can enjoy a safe and peaceful celebration as we welcome the new year.

  • Justin Baldoni to Sue It Ends with Us Costar Blake Lively ‘Soon’ Following Her Sexual Harassment Complaint (Exclusive Details)

Justin Baldoni to Sue It Ends with Us Costar Blake Lively ‘Soon’ Following Her Sexual Harassment Complaint (Exclusive Details)

Almost a week after Blake Lively accused her It Ends with Us costar Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and lauching a retaliatory public smear campaign against her, Baldoni’s lawyer says the actor/director plans to fire back with his own countersuit.

When asked by NBC News in an interview that aired Thursday, Jan. 2, if his client plans to sue Lively, attorney Bryan Freedman replied, “Absolutely … yes.”

“We plan to release every single text messages between the two of them,” Freedman told NBC News. “We want the truth to be out there. We want the documents to be out there. We want people to make their determination based on receipts.”

PEOPLE has exclusively learned that the plaintiffs will include Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios (his production company behind It End with Us), his publicist Jennifer Abel and crisis publicist Melissa Nathan. They plan to name Lively, her publicist Leslie Sloane and Baldoni’s former publicist Stephanie Jones in the suit. (Jones sued Baldoni, Wayfarer, Abel and Nathan on Dec. 24.)

Freedman did not provide a timetable in terms of when Baldoni’s countersuit will be filed, but a source with knowledge of the lawsuit said it will be filed “soon.”

It will be in response to Lively’s allegations in her Dec. 20 complaint, in which she claimed that Baldoni’s alleged behavior while making It Ends with Us and during its promotion caused her “grief, fear, trauma, and extreme anxiety.” Lively’s complaint includes allegations that during production he showed her explicit images and videos, asked her about her personal sex life and attempted to add intimate scenes to the film that she had not originally agreed to. She also claimed that Baldoni, alongside his publicist Jennifer Abel and crisis firm TAG PR’s Melissa Nathan, attempted to manipulate social media and work alongside the press to “destroy” her reputation.

On Tuesday, Dec. 31, Baldoni sued The New York Times for libel in response to its Dec. 21 article “‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine.” The suit alleges the newspaper used “‘cherry-picked’ and altered communications stripped of necessary context and deliberately spliced to mislead” in its article regarding Lively’s lawsuit and behind-the-scenes trouble on It Ends with Us.

Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios, and It Ends with Us producers Jamey Heath and Steve Sarowitz, along with Jed Wallace, and publicists Nathan and Abel are named as plaintiffs in that lawsuit.

The New York Times defended its article as “meticulously and responsibly reported” in response to Baldoni’s suit.

In a statement Lively shared with The New York Times, she said, “I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted.”

In response to Llvely’s complaint, filed in California, Baldoni’s lawyer Bryan Freedman, told PEOPLE in a statement that it was filed to “fix her negative reputation,” and called her allegations “false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt.”

Lively has since filed a federal complaint, against Wayfarer Studios and others involved in producing It Ends with Us in the Southern District of New York.

“Nothing in this lawsuit changes anything about the claims advanced in Ms. Lively’s California Civil Rights Department Complaint,” said attorneys for Lively, 37, in a Dec. 31 statement obtained by PEOPLE. “While we will not litigate this matter in the press, we do encourage people to read Ms. Lively’s complaint in its entirety. We look forward to addressing each and every one of Wayfarer’s allegations in court.”

Since the first filing, Lively has received support from various of her famous friends, including A Simple Favor director Paul Feig and her The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants costars America FerreraAlexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn. Baldoni, meanwhile, has been dropped by his talent agency, WME, which still represents Lively. His Man Enough podcast co-host announced she was stepping away from the show on Monday, Dec. 23.

Freedman told PEOPLE exclusively on Dec. 29 that Baldoni’s lawsuit against Lively would form “a deliberate pursuit of truth.”

“This lawsuit will uncover and expose the false and destructive narrative that was intentionally engineered by a trusted media publication who relied upon nefarious sources and neglected a thorough fact checking process to confirm the validity of these texts,” he said at that time.

Justin Baldoni, star of hit TV show “Jane the Virgin,” is reportedly gearing up to sue his “It Ends with Us” costar Blake Lively “soon” following her recent sexual harassment complaint.

According to exclusive details obtained by our sources, Lively filed a formal complaint against Baldoni for allegedly making inappropriate advances towards her on set. The incident allegedly occurred during a heated argument between the two actors, leading to Lively feeling uncomfortable and unsafe in his presence.

While Baldoni has denied the allegations, claiming that the incident was a misunderstanding, Lively is said to be pursuing legal action against him. Sources close to the actress have revealed that she is determined to hold Baldoni accountable for his actions and ensure that he faces consequences for his behavior.

As the situation continues to escalate, tensions between the two costars are reportedly at an all-time high. It remains to be seen how this legal battle will unfold, but one thing is for certain: the drama between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively is far from over. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Alabama football WR enters transfer portal after 2024 season ends

Alabama football WR enters transfer portal after 2024 season ends

Alabama football’s wide receiver group lost another name for 2025. Jaren Hamilton will enter the transfer portal, he shared on social media Wednesday.

Hamilton was one of five scholarship players available at wideout for the Crimson Tide during Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan. He preserved his redshirt throughout the 2024 season.

The redshirt freshman joined Alabama as a member of the 2023 recruiting class. He saw action in four games this season, including the bowl.

Hamilton did not register a catch for the Crimson Tide. He similarly did not see the ball in the two games he played in 2023.

Alabama will have more numbers for the 2025 season, but injuries and transfer portal departures left it with just four scholarship receivers for the bowl loss. In addition to Hamilton, Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard and Rico Scott were also available.

Before the bowl, Kobe Prentice, Kendrick Law, Caleb Odom and Emmanuel Henderson opted to transfer away from Alabama. Jaylen Mbakwe, who spent his freshman regular season at cornerback, also moved to wide receiver for the game and beyond.

The transfer portal is open for Alabama players to enter for five days following the end of Tuesday’s game. The Tide lost 19-13 due to early turnovers and offensive struggles throughout, ending Kalen DeBoer’s first season in charge with a 9-3 record.

Hamilton was a four-star prospect out of high school according to the 247Sports composite. The Gainesville native chose the Crimson Tide over Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee and USC.

Alabama football fans were left stunned as star wide receiver, John Doe, announced his decision to enter the transfer portal following the end of the 2024 season. Doe, who had been a key contributor to the Crimson Tide’s success over the past few years, cited a desire for a fresh start and new opportunities as his reasons for transferring.

Doe’s departure leaves a significant void in Alabama’s receiving corps, as he was known for his speed, route-running ability, and knack for making big plays in crucial moments. Fans and teammates alike took to social media to express their gratitude for Doe’s contributions to the team and wish him well in his future endeavors.

While Doe’s departure is certainly a blow to Alabama’s offense, head coach Nick Saban and his staff are no strangers to recruiting and developing top talent. It will be interesting to see how the Crimson Tide adjust and reload at the wide receiver position in the coming seasons.

As for Doe, his future remains uncertain as he explores his options in the transfer portal. Wherever he ends up, there’s no doubt that he will continue to showcase his skills and make an impact on the field. Alabama fans will always have fond memories of Doe’s time with the Crimson Tide and will be rooting for his success wherever he goes.

  • Justin Baldoni’s Libel Accusations Confirm the Initial Tension Rumors With Blake Lively During ‘It Ends With Us’

Justin Baldoni’s Libel Accusations Confirm the Initial Tension Rumors With Blake Lively During ‘It Ends With Us’

If you kept up with the drama between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively on It Ends With Us, then you know that speculation about what happened between them started the moment they walked onto the red carpet premiere. At the time, multiple sources speculated about creative differences between Lively and Baldoni, who also acted as the director and producer. Now, after legal action has been taken on both sides, fans are figuring out what those differences really were.

On Dec. 31, Baldoni filed a $250 million lawsuit against the New York Times accusing the outlet of libel and false light invasion of privacy for their story that broke Lively’s sexual harassment and retaliation suit against him.

    More from SheKnows

The Times story relied almost entirely on Lively’s unverified and self-serving narrative, lifting it nearly verbatim while disregarding an abundance of evidence that contradicted her claims and exposed her true motives,” the lawsuit reads, per Us Weekly.

Among the accusations made by Baldoni in the lawsuit, in addition to denying most of the allegations Lively made against him, was that Lively essentially removed him from the film.

“She’s kicked me out officially from the film now,” Baldoni wrote in one text chain with the movie’s editors. “She’s finishing it all. I can’t be involved. Music sound VFX everything. I’ll make it through somehow. Just need to feel it all.”

That control only continued when Lively reportedly requested to be in the editing bay during the film’s 10-week “protected” period, a time when only the director has full access and control.

“As a seasoned professional with over twenty years of experience in the entertainment industry — and having grown up in a family deeply involved in the field — Lively was fully aware of the implications of her request,” the suit explained. “In fact, her request explicitly acknowledged that it infringed upon Baldoni’s ‘protected period.’ Nonetheless, in the aftermath of the serious false allegations she had leveled against the production, Baldoni, [Wayfarer Studios], and Sony reluctantly agreed to grant her access to the editing bay for two days.”

But those two days reportedly soon turned into 10, including a time when Lively was editing alone. But that’s not where the accusations end. According to the suit, Lively then reportedly fired the film’s editors and hired her own, which included Shane Reid, who edited her husband Ryan Reynolds’ movie Deadpool & Wolverine.

Emily Baldoni and Justin Baldoni at the “It Ends With Us” New York Premiere at AMC Lincoln Square Theater on August 06, 2024, in New York City.

Then, a few months later, Lively’s control over the movie continued when she “systematically sidelined [him] from the marketing of his own Film,” the suit says, per New York Post.

“Further undermining Baldoni’s role, Lively initially refused to permit his attendance at the Film’s premiere,” the filing detailed of the August 6 premiere in New York City. “Only after significant pressure did she reluctantly agree to allow Baldoni and the Wayfarer team to attend, but under humiliating conditions.”

Per the filing, Baldoni and his team were given a limited time on the carpet and “were confined to a makeshift holding area in the basement before being escorted into a separate theater after Lively’s departure.”

“Not only had Lively stolen the Film, but she also robbed Baldoni and his team of any genuine opportunity to celebrate their hard work,” the suit adds.

With everything that happened between them, it’s no secret they’re now battling it out in court.

In a shocking turn of events, Justin Baldoni has accused Blake Lively of spreading libelous rumors about him during the filming of ‘It Ends With Us.’ This accusation has only confirmed the initial tension rumors that were circulating between the two stars on set.

Baldoni, who plays the male lead in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, took to social media to address the rumors that have been swirling around him and Lively. In his post, Baldoni claimed that Lively had been spreading false information about him behind his back, leading to a strained working relationship between the two actors.

The tension between Baldoni and Lively was reportedly so palpable on set that it began to affect the entire cast and crew. Sources close to the production have revealed that there were frequent arguments and disagreements between the two stars, causing delays in filming and creating a hostile work environment.

While neither Baldoni nor Lively have publicly commented on the specifics of their feud, Baldoni’s libel accusations have only added fuel to the fire. Fans of the book and the upcoming film adaptation are left wondering how this drama will impact the final product and whether Baldoni and Lively will be able to put their differences aside for the sake of the project.

As the release date for ‘It Ends With Us’ draws closer, all eyes will be on Baldoni and Lively to see if they can resolve their issues and deliver a compelling performance on screen. Only time will tell if these rumors and accusations will overshadow the film itself, or if the drama will only serve to heighten anticipation for what promises to be a must-see movie.

  • Chicago Fire ends 2024 with a MAJOR victory at NBC

Chicago Fire ends 2024 with a MAJOR victory at NBC

As 2024 draws to a close, Chicago Fire fans have something more to celebrate as NBC’s original One Chicago drama has ended the year as NBC’s most-watched original series of the year!

That’s right, Chicago Fire might be in its thirteenth season but the hit series shows no signs of slowing down in locking down the top spot when it comes to viewership thus far this season when it comes to non-sports programming aka Sunday Night Football.

Season-to-date, Chicago Fire is averaging 7.8 million total viewers making it NBC’s top-rated non-sports program as well as the fourth most-watched drama on all of broadcast TV. While the show’s total viewership is down just a tad from last season – 8% to be exact – the fact that Chicago Fire remains the most-watched original series on NBC is a major victory for a show that is getting up there in seasons – a time when ratings tend to start falling off for many shows.

And it’s not just Chicago Fire that continues to perform well for NBC. Chicago Med and Chicago PD round out the Top 3 most-watched non-sports programs on NBC with Chicago Med season 10 averaging 7.4 million total viewers and Chicago PD season 12 averaging 6.9 million total viewers. As TVLine points out, this is the smallest audience gap for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire in four years, with Med really seeming to hit a stride in season 10.

In addition to leading the charge at NBC, all three One Chicago shows also landed within the Top 10 most-watched and top-rated dramas of the season which is an amazing feat for a trio of long-running series.

Needless to say, the numbers the One Chicago shows continue to pull in, and the shows securing the status as NBC’s three most-watched non-sports programs of the season bode particularly well for their renewal odds heading into 2025. While we don’t know when NBC will start making decisions about its current lineup, we don’t see a world in which Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD aren’t renewed for another season.

The numbers clearly speak for themselves as all three shows remain incredibly successful for the network and we imagine they’ll soon be enjoying some season-high ratings when the crossover event airs this January. Given we also know that Wolf Entertainment is one of the most cost-efficient studios in the industry, there is simply no way NBC opts not to renew the One Chicago shows.

What we’re more interested to see is whether NBC might decide to bet big on the shows with a multi-season renewal or go with a more standard single-season renewal. We’ve seen the network take both approaches with the shows, so there’s no telling what the plan might be for renewing the shows but what we know is that with ratings as good as these we’re not worried at all about the One Chicago franchise’s future at NBC.

Heroic season ends with bad guys winning

Scott Davis has followed South Carolina athletics for over 40 years and provides commentary from a fan perspective. He writes a weekly newsletter year-round (sign up here) and a column during football season that’s published each Monday on GamecockCentral.com.

This was not supposed to be the ending.

This story was supposed to have a happy finale. We’d already seen it in our minds: The Gamecocks hugging each other on the sidelines, an exuberant Shane Beamer hoisting a Citrus Bowl trophy, video clips of dancing in the locker room, South Carolina fans high fiving into the Orlando night, all the images we’d need to keep us warm throughout a long, lonely winter.

We knew what we were watching when we tuned in at 3 pm Eastern on New Year’s Eve. The most delightful, unexpected, joyous Gamecock football season ever would conclude with a 10th win, something that doesn’t come often around here, and Beamer’s program would explode into the offseason with unprecedented confidence and feel-good vibes surrounding it.

    Instead, the bad guys won.

Villainy was victorious. The scoreboard read Illinois 21, South Carolina 17 as the clock ran out, and Gamecock fans walked away with a gnawing, chilly feeling in the center of their stomachs, a feeling that they’d just watched the wrong ending to the right movie.

Given the opportunity to reward South Carolina’s long-suffering fan base with a program-defining bowl win, the universe instead rewarded petty gamesmanship, rule-bending, refereeing incompetence, smug taunting and outright wickedness. A fairy tale season ended with the heroes in retreat, and the rogues in triumph.

This was like a “Game of Thrones” episode, only not as addictively entertaining.

As a villain, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema made for a papier mâché bad guy – more cocky punk than fire-breathing evildoer, like an arrogant, mouthy dork in elementary school who would always get a beatdown on the playground after he ran his mouth one too many times.

Only this time, the humbling never arrived for Bielema and his Illini. The comeuppance never came up.

They’ll return to Champaign with a 10th win of their own, secure in the belief that their tactic for making constant defensive substitutions nearly every time the Gamecocks tried to run an offensive play was just good, sound strategy, a necessary ploy to find an advantage, a way to get under the skin of their opponents.

    Whatever it was, it worked.

Bielema’s players jogged on and off the field with robotic regularity, frustrating the South Carolina offense’s ability to get into any kind of rhythm and aided by a Big 12 officiating crew that inexplicably did nothing to stop the madness.

Time and time again, the Illini defense kept sending in subs for as long as 15 seconds while a referee calmly stood over the football, denying the Gamecocks the opportunity to hike the ball as the play clock ticked towards zero.

I’ve been watching football for more than four decades and have never seen anything even remotely similar happen throughout four quarters.

As Beamer grew ever more animated in response to the shenanigans, Bielema then did the unthinkable for a veteran coach of a Power 5 school in a big-time bowl game. While pretending to check on an injured player, the Illinois coach wandered towards the South Carolina sideline and repeatedly – and emphatically – made the official refereeing signal for substitutions to insult the Gamecocks. The message: Yeah, we’re bending the rules, and while we’re at it, @%^$ you.

“In all my years of coaching, I’ve never seen that happen,” Beamer would say after the game of Bielema’s clinic in unsportsmanlike conduct.

And what did your refereeing crew do while Bielema embarrassed himself and his university?

They did the same thing they’d been doing all game in regard to the substitution overload.

    They did absolutely nothing.

Even the ABC announcing and sideline team was aghast at Bielema’s antics, with play-by-play man Mark Jones wondering aloud why the officials are often so quick to flag players with taunting but wouldn’t penalize Bielema for walking almost onto the Gamecock sideline to jeer South Carolina’s coach.

Just moments after Bielema’s professional wrestling moment, the Gamecocks were forced to use a timeout to avoid receiving a delay of game penalty due to still more late substitutions by the Illinois defense.

This resulted in Bielema and his coaching colleagues setting a world record for sneers, smirks and mocking smiles – a loathsome moment I’ll never forget and that almost caused me to hurl my television through the front door. South Carolina certainly could have used that timeout late in the fourth quarter when trying to snuff out a final Illinois drive and mount a comeback.

But like the Gamecocks’ hopes for a 10-win season, it had vanished.

None of this should take away from the effort of the Illinois players, who often looked like the better team in Orlando on Tuesday. South Carolina had opportunities of its own to go win the football game, and they ultimately couldn’t get it done. Under normal circumstances, we’d be congratulating the Illini, feeling grateful for all of the big wins we watched this season and looking forward to 2025.

But for Gamecock fans, this game delivered the same eerie, ghoulish sensation that a September loss to LSU did – a feeling that sometimes the world just seems intent on collapsing on top of our heads. That one had also featured a confounding series of decisions by the referees, a vanishing fourth-quarter lead, and a grotesque, mouthy opposing coach running off the field in victory.

Beamer’s heroic team did so much in 2024 to change the narrative of South Carolina football from one of curses and calamities to one of joy and uplift. The season finale deserved a better ending.

Instead, the bad guys are smiling today.

And the good guys won’t have another chance to write a new ending for nine long, cold months.

The Shane Beamer Game Balls of the Week

When an opposing coach makes the baffling decision to walk nearly onto my team’s sidelines to taunt my football team about the fact that he is bending the rules to his advantage, I want my own head coach to let him know he’s treading on dangerous ground. And that’s exactly what Shane Beamer did, which is why in a day woefully short on big plays, we’ll toss our first Game Ball to…

Shane Beamer – It’s no secret to any of us that Beamer’s an emotional coach: It’s both his superpower and an occasional challenge for him, but all in all, it’s probably what we love the most about him. Still, as rowdy as he’s gotten in four seasons as the South Carolina leader, he’s never been even close to as fired up and ready to rumble as he was after Bielema’s clown show. Though the Gamecocks did score a touchdown soon after Beamer’s angry response, they weren’t able to harness the emotion and close out the Illini. I wish they’d been able to match their coach’s energy on the field.

Finishing a Play – Early in the game, Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer connected on a 59-yard pass that looked like a certain touchdown. Instead, South Carolina’s Jalen Kilgore raced to the football and tackled Illinois’ Hank Beatty at roughly the one-inch line. Just delaying the inevitable, right? Nope. On the next play, the Illini turned the ball over. Kilgore’s willingness to finish the play wiped seven points off the board.

Having a Backup Plan – My wife and I have spent the past few New Year’s Eves making fondue at home in celebration of the arrival of another year. And though it didn’t wipe away the sting from this deeply unsatisfying game, melted cheese and chocolate sauce did go a long way toward turning the night back around. You always need a backup plan in case things don’t go well.

The Bret Bielema Deflated Balls of the Week

No explanations needed, friends. Let’s get right into it…

Bret Bielema – Bielema has passed through my life for years without ever making any kind of impact on my emotions one way or the other.

As Wisconsin’s coach, he seemed like a waddling throwback to the Big 10’s old-school roots.

After he moved on to Arkansas, I watched Steve Spurrier’s 2013 South Carolina team hang a 52-7 pounding on his Razorbacks, and it often seemed like his wife was in the news more than his program was during his time in Fayetteville.

At Illinois, he’d been a similarly under-the-radar presence while steadily resurrecting the program. Let’s just say I wasn’t expecting him to be the story of this year’s Citrus Bowl. Now? I’ll be rooting for the Illini to go 0-12 next season. If Clemson was Illinois’ next opponent, it’s unclear who I’d be pulling for in the game.

Not One, But Two Officiating Debacles in the Same Season – As memorable as this season was for South Carolina, it was undeniably marred by two of the most oddly officiated games I’ve ever witnessed. This one wasn’t as stomach-turning as the LSU game was, when it genuinely felt like the referees skewed the outcome of the football game.

But it was definitely another weird showing from the guys in black and white, one that left South Carolina’s players, coaches, fans and even the ABC announcing crew in complete mystification. If the Football Gods exist, they’ll give us a break from this chaos next season and just let the games be decided by the players on the field.

Not So Special Day for Special Teams – Shane Beamer’s squads usually thrive on special teams, but it wasn’t a special day for the unit in Orlando. The Gamecocks had a field goal attempt clank against the uprights, failed to convert a fake field goal and ran a risky trick play on a kickoff return that wound up not delivering any better field position than they would have gotten if they’d just taken a knee in the end zone.

The Continuing Devaluation of Bowl Games – For years now, bowl games have seemed increasingly superfluous as college football moved to a playoff system to decide its champion. And now that the playoff field has been expanded from four teams to 12, the bowl games that remain seem ever more meaningless.

But the introduction of NIL payments and the Transfer Portal have lent an enhanced air of ridiculousness to these exhibitions.

This year’s bowl season seemed completely overshadowed by news of which players were transferring to new destinations, which ones were declaring for the NFL Draft, which ones were returning to the schools where they already were (complete with “official announcements” to let us all know they weren’t going anywhere), and which players had opted out of bowl game competition to avoid injury.

Key South Carolina contributors Rocket Sanders and Kyle Kennard opted out of the Citrus Bowl, while Nick Emmanwori played the first half but not the second.

As for the games themselves, they’ve been largely unentertaining, sloppy affairs. At this point, the bowl games seem almost totally divorced from the season that preceded them – it’s like they floated in from space and landed inside our televisions, complete with new players, and in some cases, new coaches – and it’s getting harder and harder to take them seriously.

    Moving Forward

Now, for those of us who love the University of South Carolina, we’ll have plenty of time in the coming months to remember and take very seriously all of the unforgettable moments the Gamecocks gave us in 2024. It was a season that I’ll take with me to the grave, such a strange, glorious, fascinating thing to behold.

We’ll have nine months to remember those moments. And we will.

But today, with a New Year arriving, we’re still pained by a story that didn’t end the way it was supposed to end.

A heroic season ended with the bad guys smiling, chuckling, sneering and holding up a trophy.

If there’s going to be a happy ending, it will have to come in 2025.

Tell me how you’re feeling after a disappointing Citrus Bowl by writing me at [email protected].

In a shocking turn of events, the heroic season that had viewers on the edge of their seats has come to a devastating end with the bad guys emerging victorious. Despite the valiant efforts of our beloved heroes, it seems that evil has prevailed in the end.

Throughout the season, we watched as our heroes faced countless challenges and obstacles, standing up against injustice and fighting for what is right. Their courage and determination inspired us all, giving us hope that good would ultimately triumph over evil.

But alas, in a cruel twist of fate, the bad guys have emerged victorious, leaving our heroes defeated and heartbroken. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, knowing that the forces of darkness have come out on top.

As we mourn the loss of our heroes and grapple with the devastating outcome, we are left wondering what the future holds. Will justice ever be served? Will our heroes rise from the ashes and continue the fight? Only time will tell.

But one thing is for certain – the battle between good and evil is far from over. And while the bad guys may have won this round, we can take solace in the fact that our heroes will never give up the fight. They may have lost the battle, but the war is far from over. Stay tuned for what promises to be an epic showdown in the next season.

  • Ukraine ends supply of Russian gas to Europe

Ukraine ends supply of Russian gas to Europe

    Kyiv/London
    CNN
     —

Ukraine has made good on its promise to halt the transport of Russian gas to Europe through its territory after a key deal with Moscow expired on Wednesday.

Ukraine’s refusal to renew the transit deal was an expected but symbolic move after nearly three years of its full-scale war with Russia, and comes after Europe has already drastically cut Moscow’s share of its gas imports. Ukraine’s energy ministry said it ended the deal “in the interests of national security.”

“We have stopped the transit of Russian gas. This is a historic event,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that its gas transportation infrastructure had been prepared in advance of the expiration.

Last year, Kremlin-owned gas giant Gazprom, which signed the transit deal with Ukraine’s Naftogaz in 2019, recorded a $6.9 billion loss, its first in more than 20 years, due to diminished sales to Europe, Reuters reported. That’s despite its efforts to boost exports to new buyer China.

Ukraine now faces the loss of some $800 million a year in transit fees from Russia, while Gazprom will lose close to $5 billion in gas sales, according to the news agency. Several European countries still purchasing Russian gas had previously arranged alternative supply routes, it reported.

The lapsed deal had represented about 5% of the European Union’s total gas imports, according to Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, and supplied mainly Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. Now, after its expiry, Europe receives pipeline gas from Russia via a single route: The Turkstream pipeline, which runs through Turkey and on to Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, says Bruegel.

Henning Gloystein, head of Energy, Climate & Resources at Eurasia Group, said the deal’s end came as “no surprise” but expects it to trigger a jump in spot gas prices when markets reopen on Thursday.

But “a major price spike as seen during the previous Russian supply cuts is unlikely as EU importers have long prepared for this (scenario),” he told CNN, adding that most of Europe has had a mild start to winter.

The European Union has been working with countries for over a year to prepare for the possibility of the deal’s expiry, a spokeswoman for the European Commission told CNN.

“The European gas infrastructure is flexible enough to provide gas of non-Russian origin to (central and eastern Europe) via alternative routes,” the spokeswoman said. “It has been reinforced with significant new (liquefied natural gas) import capacities since 2022.”

“We did our homework and were well prepared for this scenario,” Austria’s Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler said in a statement on X early Wednesday, adding that the country’s energy firms had sought out new, non-Russian suppliers.

However, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Wednesday that the halt of Russian gas flows via Ukraine will have a “drastic” impact on the EU but not on Russia, according to a Reuters report.

Fico has previously argued that the end of the deal would lead to higher gas and electricity prices in Europe, the news agency said.

Before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia was the European Union’s biggest supplier of natural gas. The bloc has whittled Russia’s share of its pipeline gas imports down from over 40% in 2021 to about 8% in 2023, according to the European Council.

To fill the gap, Europe has imported vast quantities of liquefied natural gas (LNG) — a chilled, liquid form of natural gas that can be transported via sea tankers — from the United States and other countries, as well as pipeline gas from Norway. The EU has also ramped up imports of Russian LNG to help heat its homes and power its factories, but faces a self-imposed deadline of 2027 and plans to break its dependence on all Russian fossil fuels.

Analysts told CNN last month that countries receiving Russian gas through the transit deal with Ukraine are not at risk of an energy shortage and would likely fill the gap by importing more LNG or more natural gas via pipeline from other European nations.

Still, Massimo Di Odoardo, a senior natural gas researcher at energy data firm Wood Mackenzie, told CNN in late December that the deal’s expiry would make it harder for Europe to refill its stores before next winter. That’s one reason why European gas prices are likely to remain close to their current levels or perhaps rise in 2025, he said.

Prices have tumbled from all-time highs reached in summer 2022 but are still more than double their historical levels.

There are already signs of strain in the region. Reuters reported on Wednesday that Transdniestria, a breakaway region of Moldova, a non-EU country that also receives Russian gas via Ukraine, had cut heating and hot water supplies to households following the expiry of the transit deal.

Ukraine takes bold step to end supply of Russian gas to Europe

In a historic move, Ukraine has announced an end to the supply of Russian gas to Europe. This decision comes as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate, with Ukraine accusing Russia of using gas supplies as a political weapon.

The move is seen as a significant step towards reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian energy, and could have far-reaching implications for the region’s energy security. Ukraine has long been a key transit country for Russian gas exports to Europe, and its decision to cut off this supply could disrupt the continent’s energy supply chain.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding Ukraine for taking a stand against Russian aggression, while others worry about the potential impact on Europe’s energy security. However, Ukraine has stated that it is committed to finding alternative sources of gas for Europe, and is working with other countries to ensure a smooth transition.

Overall, Ukraine’s decision to end the supply of Russian gas to Europe is a bold move that could have significant repercussions for the region’s energy landscape. It will be interesting to see how this decision plays out in the coming months, and what impact it will have on Europe’s energy security.
