Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has landed in England ahead of a proposed move to Tottenham.
Tel’s agent has posted an image on Instagram of the Bayern Munich teenager aboard a private plane heading for London, and the 19-year-old has landed at Farnborough Airport.
Sky Sports News understands the structure of the deal is still being negotiated between the clubs.
Bayern are understood to prefer a permanent deal or a loan which includes an obligation to buy.
Tel turned down the chance to sign for Tottenham earlier this week after the clubs had agreed a £50m deal.
But in a massive U-turn, Tel has changed his mind after a long conversation with Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou on how he will be used.
Tel has been in demand this window with Manchester United and Arsenal also showing interest in the France U21 international.
‘Tel has changed his mind – his plane is heading to London!’
SSN reporter Michael Bridge:
“We say never say never on Deadline Day but Tel has done a U-turn and has said ‘yes’ to Tottenham. Incredible news.
“There are reports there are no obligations or options to buy but what we do know – and there is a picture of Tel and his agent on a plane – the plane looks like it is going to London and not Manchester.
“Huge news. Tel has changed his mind…”
Remember, Tel rejected Spurs first…
Here’s what Paul Merson said on the Transfer Show on Friday night after Mathys Tel rejected a £50m transfer to Spurs…
“Mathys Tel can’t go to Spurs now. Fans won’t be happy with that. As soon as they’ve heard that he doesn’t want to join, and those three other clubs don’t come in for him and then he ends up at Tottenham, the fans won’t be happy with that.
“I wouldn’t say it’s embarrassing for Spurs. He’s coming from Bayern Munich, he’s not coming from a lesser team. No disrespect to Tottenham, but he’s coming from a huge team. He’s got to get the right move.”
Analysis: Why Tel is in demand
Image: Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel
Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:
Tel has been a peripheral figure for Bayern Munich this season, playing only 344 minutes across their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns without scoring. But at 19, he remains a thrilling talent with plenty to offer and plenty of room for improvement.
He demonstrated his immense potential last season, contributing nine goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League, despite mostly featuring as a substitute, and averaging an eye-catching 1.15 goal involvements per 90 minutes.
Context is important, of course. Many of those substitute appearances came at points in games where Bayern were already several goals up. But his talent is not in doubt. It is what convinced Bayern to pay roughly £23m to land him at the age of only 17 in 2022.
Image: Mathys Tel has largely been used as an impact sub at Bayern Munich so far in his career
Tel is quick, strong in the air and, crucially, an accomplished finisher. His versatility is another asset.
As shown in the graphic above, Tel’s minutes at Bayern have been split across different positions. He has played the highest share of minutes on the left, where he is able to cut in on his right foot. But he is also adept with his left foot and has been used on the right, as a central striker, and even in midfield.
He would have to adapt to new surroundings in the Premier League, of course. Hitting the ground running would be a challenge mid-season. But it is easy to understand the interest, even if he would not come cheaply to any side looking to sign him permanently.
Mathys Tel transfer: Bayern Munich forward on his way to England to seal Tottenham move | Football News
Exciting news for Tottenham Hotspur fans as Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel is reportedly on his way to England to finalize a move to the Premier League club. The 24-year-old has been a standout performer for the Bundesliga giants and is now set to make the switch to the English top-flight.
Tottenham have been in the market for attacking reinforcements and it seems like they have found their man in Tel. The young forward is known for his pace, skill, and eye for goal, making him a perfect fit for the North London outfit.
The deal is said to be in the final stages of completion, with Tel expected to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on a long-term contract with Spurs. It is believed that Bayern Munich have accepted a substantial offer for the talented forward, paving the way for his move to the Premier League.
Tottenham fans will be eagerly awaiting the official announcement of Tel’s arrival, as he is set to bolster their attacking options and provide competition for the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transfer saga!
IND Vs ENG, 5th T20I: Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma etches his name in the history books by scoring a record-breaking fifty against England in the 5th T20I at the Wankhede Stadium.
The stylish left-handed batsman has accomplished an astonishing feat by smashing India’s 2nd fastest T20I fifty, with him taking just 17 balls to reac the mark.
Watch the highlights here:
On The Charge
Abhishek Sharma is on the move and brings up his fifty
The Indian batter has truly made his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, proud today, as the latter holds the record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian. The legendary all-rounder achieved the feat against the same opposition at the T20 World Cup 2007 back in September 2007, where he smashed Stuart Broad for those iconic 6 sixes off an over, and scored his fifty in just 12 balls.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener, Jason Roy, lit up the Wankhede Stadium with a stunning fifty in the 5th T20I against England. Roy’s explosive innings set the tone for the rest of the match, as he smashed boundaries all around the ground and showcased his immense talent with the bat.
The English opener’s fifty came off just 30 balls, as he dismantled the England bowlers with ease. His aggressive approach put the opposition on the back foot from the very beginning, and he continued to pile on the runs with his aggressive stroke play.
Roy’s innings was a display of pure class and power, as he effortlessly found the gaps and sent the ball flying to all parts of the ground. His ability to accelerate the run rate and keep the scoreboard ticking over was crucial for SRH, as they posted a competitive total for England to chase.
Overall, it was a masterful display of batting from Jason Roy, and his fifty was a testament to his skill and talent as a top-order batsman. SRH will be hoping that he can continue his good form in the upcoming matches and lead them to victory in the T20I series.

England captain Jos Buttler won the toss for a second consecutive time and has chosen to bowl first in the fifth and final IND vs ENG T20I at the Wankhede Stadium. India have chosen to bring back Mohammed Shami for Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube remains in the side despite being concussed after his innings in the fourth T20I. Harshit Rana being brought on as concussion substitute for him resulted in quite a bit of controversy, with Buttler left fuming at the end of the match. He took a jab at the incident at the toss in Mumbai as well, calling England’s designated substitutes “impact subs”.
Both sides have fought tooth and nail throughout this series and so it is a bit of a disappointment that it has been decided already before the last match. However, England were a wounded side at the end of the epic fourth T20I and one can expect them to give India a big shock if the hosts let their guards down.
At the same time, one can expect a host of changes for India with this being the last T20I before they go on a run of ODI matches that includes the Champions Trophy. Harshit Rana was a standout in Pune and it won’t be much of a surprise if he gets a starting spot. Shivam Dube was also sensational and he is set to be a shoo-in if he is fit.
India fought their way out of multiple holes to win the fourth T20I under extraordinary circumstances. They also had some luck going their way, with the officials seemingly deeming Rana to be a like-for-like replacement as a concussion substitute for Dube, much to the fury of England captain Jos Buttler. However, the fact remains that India won the match despite being 12/3 in the second over and 79/5 in the 11th.
Pandya and Dube put up a partnership of 87 runs off just 45 balls for the sixth wicket. The former eventually fell on 53 off 34 balls while Dube finished unbeaten on 50 off 30 balls. The big fast-bowling all-rounders helped India avoid collapsing for an embarassing total and get to a score of 181/9, the highest by any team in this series thus far.
But England seemed to have been put in cruise mode once again by their openers Ben Duckett and Phil Salt, who blasted an opening partnership of 62 runs in the powerplay before the former fell to Ravi Bishnoi off the last ball of the sixth over. This was followed by Axar dismissing Salt and Bishnoi getting the big wicket of Jos Buttler. England are chasing a target of 182.
England then hit back through Harry Brook, who smashed his way to a half-century in just 25 balls before falling trying one shot too many against the irresistible Varun Chakravarthy. England then had one final hurrah in the form of Jamie Overton but his tactic of trying to farm strike despite having Adil Rashid at the other end did them no favours.
Here are some pointers to IND vs ENG 5th T20I:
– Abhishek Sharma raised his half-century in just 17 balls
– England won the toss and chose to bowl first
– India have rested Arshdeep Singh again for Mohammed Shami
– Shivam Dube finds a place in the squad despite being concussed in the fourth T20I
– India have already confirmed a series-win for themselves

IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 5th T20I: It is Tilak, not Abhishek but any wicket is good for England at this stage. The partnership ends on 115 off 43 balls. Carse digs it in short, Tilak tries to ramp it with a raised bat over his head. He can only get an edge and Phil Salt takes the catch.

IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 5th T20I: India cross 100 in 7 overs!
IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 5th T20I: The carnage continues. Adil Rashid comes in, he has been almost impossible to score against in this series but doesn’t matter. Two singles off the first two balls and then Abhishek smashes the third over long on. That brings up India’s 100 off the third ball of the seventh over. Abhishek charges at the next ball, lofts it straight back again and that’s another six. Singles off the next two balls, Abhishek on 72 off 25 balls, Tilak on 21 off 10 balls.

IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 5th T20I: Abhishek Sharma what are you doing to this cricket match! This is getting into Chris Gayle territory. Jamie Overton comes in for the fifth over, his first ball is too full and Abhishek hits it back over the bowler’s head for six. Then a full toss and Abhishek elegantly hits it back over the bowler’s head for another six. That’s fifty in 17 balls and the second highest ever in T20Is.

The next is sent down the ground with an immaculate on-drive, he can do it all this Abhishek Sharma. He swings at the next one and misses and then he nails that same swing next ball, sends it over point for another six. Abhishek takes a single to stay on strike last ball. Wowza!

IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 5th T20I: Well it’s the same old story at the end of it all. Wood bowls this into Samson’s hips from wider of the crease, the latter swivels and pulls straight into the hands of backward square leg. Nope, it is not an action replay, this really is a fresh dismissal.

The third ball moved into him from a length and rapped Samson on the bottom hand. He takes the gloves off and the physio comes out. IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 5th T20I: All right can Sanju Samson get a big one today. Or even a good one? So far in this series, they have been some pretty poor ones. Abhishek Sharma at the other end. India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Largely placid tracks with some fairly good bounce for the seamers, that is what one normally gets to see at the Wankhede Stadium. Eight T20Is have been played here thus far, of which three was as a neutral venue during the 2016 T20 World Cup. India have hosted five T20Is and won four of them. The only team to beat them? England, on December 22, 2012.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Samson should be “allowed failures”, says Manjrekar
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Sanjay Manjrekar has said that players as mercurial as Sanju Samson should be allowed to have a lot of failures as when they do strike, they take the game away from the opposition. “And you see with Sanju Samson, when he plays well, he gets an incredible hundred and puts your team in a winning position. So, such people are allowed failures and maybe a long patch of failures as well because that is the nature of these as a T20 cricketer, where you cannot play yourself, where you have to keep taking those risks that they take, and hopefully there is one innings that just propels him back into form,” said Manjrekar on ESPNCricinfo.
“So, with Samson, I think you should just make sure that he gets as many innings as possible purely because when he gets into form and plays well, he makes it all worth it. If that was another guy who was failing in this fashion and when he got into form just got you 40 or 50, then maybe you would offer him a shorter rope. But I will have a lot of patience with this current version of Sanju Samson,” he added.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Can Samson and SKY fire?
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav were sharing a behemoth of a partnership and destroying the Bangladesh bowling attack not too long ago. However, that has ended up being the last time SKY scored more than 50 runs in an innings. Samson went on to score two more centuries in the next four innings but in this series, he has scores of 26, 5, 3 and 1.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Why Shami didn’t play much in this series
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Shami played just one match in this series and there were a lot of raised eyebrows when he was not selected in the first T20I. However, it was all part of the plan. The priority was to get Shami warming up before matches and work closely with the team physios in the nets.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Morne Morkel on Shami potentially playing today
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Morne Morkel was all praise for how Mohammed Shami is shaping up in this series. “Shami has been bowling really well. You know, catching to him at warm-ups, (the ball) is really hitting the glove hard. So, (we’re) very happy with how he’s coming along. You know, he’s probably going to get an opportunity in the next game. We’ll see how things go. But, yeah, (we’re) excited to have him back in the group,” Morkel said.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Could Shami return to the XI?
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Mohammed Shami got one match in this series and there is a chance that the Indian management could want him to get one more before the run of ODI matches. The obvious option seems to be to keep Arshdeep Singh out again but India might also consider getting an extra seamer considering the conditions at the Wankhede. It will be interesting to see which spinner makes way in that case.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Saqib Mahmood’s early havoc in Pune
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Considering the way that match went, Saqib Mahmood’s unbelievable first over of this tour might seem like a distant memory for England. But regardless of the result, that certainly was a moment rarely seen in a T20 match – a triple wicket maiden. It started with Sanju Samson’s wicket and that was followed by Tilak Varma going the very next ball. Suryakumar Yadav managed to keep Mahmood from getting a hat-trick but he couldn only survive three more deliveries. India were thus 12/3 at the end of the second over and they went and won a cricket match from that position.

He stated that match referee Javagal Srinath should accept his mistake in allowing this to happen. “Concussion sub is quite the topic everywhere here atm and my view is…it was NEVER a like for like replacement and the match referee should just hold his hand up and say he got that one wrong. India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: What Buttler said about Rana being Dube’s concussion substitute
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Murali Kartik, as expected, chose not to ask Suryakumar Yadav or Jos Buttler about the concussion substitute, as expected, and so we never got to know the Indian captain’s thoughts on the matter. But Buttler spoke about it in the post-match press-conference. “It is not a like-for-like replacement. We don’t agree with that,” Buttler said after India completed a 15-run win. “Either Shivam Dube has put on about 25mph with the ball or Harshit has really improved his batting. It’s part of the game and we really should have gone on to win the match, but we disagree with the decision.”

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: ‘…the game was played with an impact player,’ says Ashwin
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: If you think that criticising India or the officials, especially the latter, over the concussion substitute fiasco means you are not supporting India, then think again. There can probably be no bigger supporter of India than the legendary Ravichandran Ashwin and even he had to call this one out. “The game is done. India capture yet another series at home. T20I has been a real juggernaut of a win. What was this game? It was like a replica of the IPL. Supersub was there, and the game was played with an impact player,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
“The entire discussion is about how Harshit Rana came in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube. Did we forget that it was an international match and play an IPL match? I can understand. It has happened in the past. Ravindra Jadeja got concussed in Canberra, and Yuzvendra Chahal came in as a substitute. I don’t understand this. At least previously, Chahal came in for Jadeja, a spinner for a spinner,” he added.

India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Question mark on Shivam Dube
India vs England 5th T20I LIVE SCORE: Amid all the hubbub over Harshit Rana being brought on as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube it may have gone somewhat unnoticed that the latter did suffer a concussion. There has been no messages from the Indian camp over his availability. In case he can’t play, we could see Ramandeep Singh taking his place. Unless SKY and Gambhir and the rest still think that Rana is a clone of Dube.

The eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted that Shivam Dube is playing today, less than 48 hours after failing that concussion test. Chicanery afoot! No doubt that is what prompted Buttler to list his subs bench. Bit of neeeeedle today at the Wankhede I reckon.
“I caught you listing out your impact subs…”
There’s a pointed and quite funny moment at the toss as Jos Buttler insists on listing his four impact subs with a bit of a twinkle in his eye and the beginnings of a smirk on his face.
Is this a sign of the new mischievous/larky Buttler? He did say before the series that he’d been practicing smiling in the mirror. Seriously. Give him a a few more matches and he’ll be doing witty little monologues like ‘Cinch’ slathered Tony Hancock.
England: Phil Salt (wk), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (c), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.
Mark Wood comes back in for Saqib Mahmood for England despite the latter impressing in the last match and Mohammed Shami replaces Arshdeep Singh for India.
England win the toss… and will bowl!
Joss Buttler calls the coin correctly at the toss as Ravi Shastri’s voice echoes around the stadium like a sonic boom. Buttler says he’s excited for the match, the crowd should be large and loud and they hope there’s a bit of dew around early doors to get the ball zipping.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav says he wanted to bat first so everybody is happy. Nice little mental flex from Sky there. Teams news incoming!
Preamble
James Wallace
Hello and welcome to the fifth and final T20 of this series between India and England. Actually, excuse me whilst I take the afternoon off, I’m not feeling it. Here’s Rob Smyth to OBO in my place. He’s vastly more experienced at this stuff, has more stats and facts at his disposal than almost anyone, is a really quick typer and isn’t hungover/sleep deprived/racked with a perennial nag of existential ennui… you don’t mind do you? Over to you Rob!
I’m being facetious (but truthful about Rob) of course, in case you missed it there was some controversy in the last match as Shivam Dube was conked on the helmet whilst batting, prompting a concussion replacement for India, Harshit Rana came in for his Twenty20 international debut during the England innings. Now, Rana is a far better bowler than Dube, this was no ‘like-for-like change’, as the rules state.
Jos Buttler didn’t go full sour grapes after the match, England should have won the match regardless and squandered an opportunity to tie the series and set up a shootout at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today, but he made his feelings clear:
It’s not a like-for-like replacement, we don’t agree with that…either Shivam Dube has put on about 25mph with the ball or Harshit has really improved his batting. It’s part of the game. I still think we should have gone on to win the match. But we disagree with the decision. We’ll ask Javagal [Srinath, the match referee] some questions just to get some clarity around it.”
So the series might be gone but there’ll be a bit of frisson and an England side looking to prove a point coming up against and Indian side wanting to put any questions about the validity of their series win to bed with a 4-1 victory overall.
I’m afraid you are stuck with me, Jim here in a sunny south London (i’m not hungover… promise). Play begins at 1.30pm GMT – a little over half an hour’s time. I’ll be back imminently with news of the teams and toss.

After securing a series-clinching victory on Friday, India take on England in the fifth T20I on Sunday, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The fourth T20I also saw controversy as Harshit Rana was allowed to be Shivam Dube’s concussion substitute and removed Liam Livingstone off his second delivery. Dube has cleared the concussion protocol tests and is allowed to be included in the playing XI. Members from the England camp feel that Rana coming in for Dube wasn’t a like-for-like substitution and was unfair.

The fourth T20I saw Hardik Pandya (53) and Shivam Dube’s (53) half-centuries take India to 181/9 in 20 overs. Meanwhile, Saquib Mahmood struck thrice for the visitors and Jamie Overton took two wickets. Chasing 182 runs, England were bowled out for 166 in 19.4 overs, despite a half-century from Harry Brook (51). Meanwhile for India’s bowling department, Ravi Bishnoi and Rana bagged three dismissals each respectively.
In the fifth T20I, Sanju Samson is once again expected to open with Abhishek Sharma. Samson is in poor batting form and could only muster one run off three balls in the previous fixture. Unlike his opening partner, Abhishek has been in good form and is the highest run-scorer in the ongoing series, with 144 runs at a strike rate of 197.26, and has also clobbered 17 fours and nine sixes.
In the fourth fixture, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were dismissed for ducks. Tilak departed in the first ball and skipper Suryakumar faced only four deliveries. They are expected to keep their place, and will bat at no. 3 and no. 4 in the order.
Rinku Singh got a gritty 26-ball 30-run knock in the previous fixture, and also hammered four fours and a maximum. He is expected to retain his place and will bat at no. 5, followed by Dube and Pandya, who were crucial in the previous fixture. Dube was also adjudged as Player of the Match for his quickfire half-century (53 off 34 deliveries).
Axar Patel will be the last batting all-rounder in the batting order, coming after Hardik. He was dismissed for five runs off four balls. Meanwhile, the tailenders will consist of Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy.
Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy
After missing the last few matches due to a concussion, all-rounder Shivam Dube is set to make his return to the Indian lineup for the fifth T20I against England. Dube’s presence will provide a much-needed boost to the team, especially in the absence of Hardik Pandya who is still recovering from a shoulder injury.
On the other hand, wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, who has been struggling for form in the series so far, is likely to retain his place in the playing XI. Despite not making significant contributions with the bat, the team management seems to have faith in Samson’s abilities and will give him another opportunity to prove himself.
Here is India’s likely XI for the fifth T20I against England:
With the series currently tied at 2-2, both teams will be looking to put their best foot forward in the final match to clinch the series. It will be interesting to see how the inclusion of Shivam Dube and the persistence with Sanju Samson will impact India’s performance in the crucial encounter.
IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th T20I: India coach reveals who took the final call on concussion substitute
The selection of Harshit Rana as a “concussion sub” in place of Shivam Dube infuriated England captain Jos Buttler, but India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel defended the decision, claiming that match referee Javagal Srinath made the final call after they presented the young pacer’s name.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir skillfully employed the rules to substitute Mumbai all-rounder Rana, who bowls at early 120 clicks, for Dube, who reached a half-century, when Dube was hit by Jamie Overton off the penultimate delivery of the Indian innings.
“As far as I’m aware, Shivam (Dube) obviously took the knock on the head and when he came off the field during the innings break with mild headache symptoms, we took a name forward to the match referee in terms of a suitable substitution.
“From there it’s up to the match referee to make that decision,” Morkel replied when asked about the controversy surrounding Rana.
With a match remaining, the pacer helped India win by 15 runs in Pune on Friday night, capping the T20I series. He took 3/33 on his debut.
“Harshit (Rana) was having dinner, had to get himself ready as quick as possible to get onto the field and bowl and I thought he did an excellent job,” Morkel said.
When questioned about Buttler’s criticism of the replacement for not being like-for-like, Morkel avoided the subject.
“You know, it goes to the powers sort of above me (match referee).
“Match referee, he made the decision, you know, we can only take the name forward and from there it’s out of our hands. We got the green light to go with that and, you know, we gave it an opportunity,” he said.
The bowling unit’s consistency in execution has greatly impressed the former South African pacer, who joined the Indian team management prior to the home season.
“In our planning we do before games, everybody’s contributing in those conversations. But the main thing at the end of the day is to go out and execute,” Morkel said.
“And I think even if we’re under pressure with ball in hand, like tonight, you know, we were under pressure, defending a total there tonight, it was great character shown by this young group,” he said.
England got off to a fast start with 62 runs in Powerplay, but Varun Chakravarthy, Rana, and Ravi Bishnoi demonstrated their skills by defending a total of 181.
“The way we defended tonight, yeah, I’m just very proud of this team. You know, defending a 180 sort of total on a good wicket with a wet outfield is outstanding work.”
India vs England 5th T20I Live Score Update:
In the highly anticipated 5th T20I match between India and England, England captain Jos Buttler has won the toss and elected to field first. This decision will put the Indian batting line-up to the test as they look to set a competitive total.
In a surprising move, Mohammed Shami has been included in the Indian playing XI for this crucial match. Shami’s pace and accuracy will be key in providing early breakthroughs for the Indian team.
Both teams are coming off impressive performances in the series so far, with the series currently tied at 2-2. The winner of this match will take the series and gain momentum going into the upcoming ODI series.

“See the Ashes ignite” was the experience Cricket Australia promised fans in an attempt to persuade them to turn up to watch this series. It was a tagline that promised a hard-fought, thrilling contest. Instead, locals have had the opportunity over the past three weeks to watch England’s batting, fielding abilities and reputation go up in smoke.
The culmination was no more than England deserved: utter annihilation in front of a crowd of more than 10,000 in Melbourne, as Australia sealed victory in the Test by an innings and 122 runs with a day to spare to claim the first whitewash of the multi-format era. Thus ends the worst overseas tour by England Women in living memory.
England had actually shown some fight in the first session of the day. Beth Mooney successfully brought up her hundred, but England then induced an Australian collapse of five wickets for nine runs, led by a wily Sophie Ecclestone, who finished with five for 143 – making England’s decision to field only one frontline spinner look very foolish indeed.
The signwriter at the MCG had been kept busy before play started on Saturday adding Annabel Sutherland’s name to the honours board after her history-making century on the second day: on Sunday he will have to get up his ladder again multiple times.
But England were still the small matter of 270 behind on first innings and they faced a mammoth task – bat for four and a half sessions, and save the Test. In theory, they had the personnel to do so. Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont both have the technique and temperament to build Test innings – Beaumont hit a double hundred at Trent Bridge in 2023, while Knight has two Ashes 150s – and they patiently constructed a partnership of 73 for the second wicket.
But then came the duo of Alana King and Ash Gardner, bowling in tandem either side of the dinner break. Gardner struck first: Knight had been solid for two hours, but the intense psychological pressure of knowing that her future as England captain might be at stake eventually told and she sent up a tame catch to Phoebe Litchfield at short leg.

Then King did exactly what she has done all series, and produced a spell of masterful leg-spin. Nat Sciver-Brunt was trapped leg-before by King’s slider, Sophia Dunkley was bowled by a brilliant leg-break, then Beaumont played on three runs short of a half-century and England were staring down the barrel. Just over a year ago, in Mumbai, England were humiliated by India in a Test because they couldn’t work out how to play spin. Nothing has changed.
Indeed, JonBall – the all-guns-blazing approach to batting advocated by their coach Jon Lewis – has arguably made the problems worse, encouraging aggression even when the match situation, as it did on Saturday, calls for defence. On this occasion, England lost their last nine wickets for 69 runs.
The only remaining question was whether it would be King or Gardner who would trouble the MCG’s signwriter for a fourth time this Test. Laurens Filer and Bell kept everyone guessing for 75 balls – the crowd roaring as a succession of possible chances dropped safe – but it was King who eventually secured the five-for which she had been denied first time around, when Filer chipped up a catch to mid-on.
The day had begun with Mooney, stranded on 98 not out overnight, nervously facing down five balls from Ecclestone. Mooney was beaten twice and tried for a nonexistent single before carving the sixth out past point to score the two runs required to bring up her century.
Ecclestone’s response was to upend expectations by engineering a much hastier than expected end to the Australian innings. Even more surprisingly, England – after spending noticeably longer than usual out on the outfield at the G before play doing fielding drills – actually held on to some catches.
Mooney was bowled playing down the wrong line to Filer, but Tahlia McGrath and Kim Garth were both out caught. As was Ellyse Perry, who had not been expected to bat (and indeed did not take to the field), and was greeted with thunderous applause when she finally walked out to the middle at No 10. But she faced just seven balls before sending up a limp return catch to Ecclestone as Australia extended their overnight lead by just 18 runs.
England could finally claim to have won a session – but it was all too little, too late. The only comfort on offer is that the blessed oblivion of the plane home awaits.
England’s misery was complete as Australia completed a Women’s Ashes whitewash, dominating the series and leaving their rivals in disarray. The Australian team showcased their dominance and skill throughout the series, leaving the England team struggling to keep up.
From the opening match to the final game, Australia showed why they are the top-ranked team in women’s cricket. Their all-round performance was simply too much for England to handle, with their bowlers consistently picking up wickets and their batters scoring runs at will.
For England, it was a series to forget. Despite showing glimpses of promise at times, they were unable to string together a consistent performance and were ultimately outclassed by their Australian counterparts.
As the series came to a close, Australia celebrated their whitewash victory while England were left to ponder what went wrong. It was a stark reminder of the gap between the two teams and a clear indication of the work that lies ahead for England to catch up to the dominant Australian side.

England slumped to an embarrassing defeat by an innings and 122 runs in the one-off Test in Melbourne, handing Australia a 16-0 clean sweep in the Women’s Ashes.
Australia were bowled out for 440 in their first innings after England impressed to take the last five wickets for nine runs in the first session, but still faced a deficit of 270.
Leg-spinner Alana King then ripped through England’s batting once more with 5-53 as the visitors were skittled for 148, helping Australia wrap up yet another dominant win with a day to spare.
It is the first time any team has won the multi-format Ashes 16-0 and has placed enormous pressure upon captain Heather Knight and coach Jon Lewis.
After a tortuous day two spent entirely in the field, with seven catches dropped, England responded positively as Sophie Ecclestone finished with 5-143 after Beth Mooney converted her overnight 98 to become the first Australian woman to score a century in all three formats.
Opener Maia Bouchier’s dismal tour continued as she was bowled by Darcie Brown for one in the first over of England’s reply, but Knight and Tammy Beaumont’s gritty stand of 73 showed much-needed signs of fight.
The introduction of spin – England’s constant nemesis throughout the series – triggered a woeful collapse of eight wickets for 48 runs to end any hopes of them finishing the series with pride.
Knight was caught at short leg for 32 off Ash Gardner, King pinned Nat Sciver-Brunt lbw for 18 before bowling Sophia Dunkley with a sensational fizzing leg-break, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge fell softly by sweeping Gardner straight to short fine leg for two.
Ecclestone withstood 50 balls for her 18 until she was bounced out by Gardner, and after a tantalising passage of play of 11 overs with both spinners on four wickets and one wicket remaining, King had Lauren Filer caught for 14 to complete a memorable five-wicket haul.
The Women’s Ashes 2025 series has come to a devastating end for England, as they suffered a humiliating innings defeat in the final test match, resulting in a 16-0 series loss to Australia.
Despite putting up a valiant effort throughout the series, England just couldn’t match the dominance of the Australian team. The final test match saw England bowled out for a paltry total, with Australia easily chasing down the target to win by an innings and seal the series whitewash.
It was a tough pill to swallow for the England team and their supporters, who had high hopes coming into the series. The Australian team, on the other hand, showed their class and proved why they are the reigning champions of women’s cricket.
The Women’s Ashes 2025 series will go down in history as a one-sided affair, but England will no doubt be looking to bounce back and reclaim the trophy in the future. Congratulations to Australia on their dominant performance and well-deserved victory.
