NBA Power Rankings: High-scoring Knicks enter top five, Warriors make huge jump, 76ers gaining momentum
1
Thunder
Recently OKC has struggled to generate offense outside of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — and he’s nearly been able to win games by himself with his increasingly absurd point totals — but there’s certainly no cause for panic. They’re still first in defense, sixth in offense and first in net rating by a country mile. — 37-9
2
Cavaliers
The fact that the Cavs lost three games in a row recently and they still only have NINE losses all season shows just how magical this run has been for them. Still, the defense has been a real cause for concern, as they’re now 26th in the league in January with a 9-5 record during the month. — 39-9
3
Rockets
The Rockets have now picked up nine combined wins against the Cavs, Thunder, Celtics, Grizzlies and Nuggets — how’s that for big-game pedigree? Amen Thompson is the talk of the league with his performance since moving into the starting lineup in place of the injured Jabari Smith Jr. in early January. Thompson is averaging 18.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.2 blocks as the Rockets have gone 9-2 in that stretch. — 32-15
4
Celtics
The roller coaster season continues for the Celtics, who can still — at times — look like the hands-down favorite to win the title. But at other times they put up 96 points in a blowout loss to the Lakers *shrug emoji*. Kristaps Porzingis is in the midst of a scorching-hot stretch, averaging 20.5 points and eight rebounds over his last 12 games on absurd 51/51/87 shooting splits. — 34-15
5
Knicks
The Knicks scored 99 points in a win over the Nets last week and then were like, screw that. All they did was put up 408 points over their next three games — all wins — to set a franchise record for a three-game span. They’ve now won five in a row, and the last three have come against the then-red-hot Kings, the Grizzlies and the Nuggets — just the type of quality wins they’ve been lacking even in such a tremendous season. 1 32-16
6
Grizzlies
The Memphis defense hasn’t exactly been locking up lately, allowing 120, 126 and 143 points in three of their last four games. Fortunately their offense is so good that they still won two of those, which makes six of seven overall. Jaren Jackson Jr. has been the engine, averaging 23 points on 50/39/82 splits during that stretch. 1 32-16
7
Nuggets
Denver has allowed 126 points per 100 possessions during its three-game losing streak, and it’s nearly impossible to win on the road with defense that porous. After a historic 35-22-17 line in a win over the Kings, Nikola Jokic has been somewhat human — not good enough if the Nuggets defense is going to be this bad. — 30-19
8
Clippers
Oh hey, check out Kawhi Leonard’s line from Wednesday’s win over the Spurs: 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds on 11-of-19 shooting in 28 minutes. Uh oh. Leonard, James Harden, Norm Powell and Ivica Zubac all scored over 20 points in the win, a blueprint for how effective this offense can be moving forward. 1 28-20
9
Bucks
Damian Lillard has been on a tear his last seven games, averaging 28 points, six rebounds and seven assists during that span, including back-to-back triple-doubles — nearly doubling his career total — against the Heat and Clippers. Milwaukee has won seven if its last 10 games, but just can’t make up any ground on the streaking Knicks. 1 26-20
10
Pacers
Did you know that the Pacers’ starting lineup of Tyrese Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard, Bennedict Mathurin, Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner has the second-best net rating of any five-man unit in the NBA with at least 200 minutes under its belt? Yep, that’s better than the Thunder, Rockets, Nuggets and Knicks. Indiana has won 11 of 14 games and moved into a virtual tie with the Bucks for the No. 4 seed in the East. 1 27-20
11
Lakers
The momentum of the Lakers’ four-game win streak (including a home thumping of the rival Celtics) came to a screeching halt on Tuesday, when they not only lost to the injury-ravaged 76ers, but also saw Anthony Davis go down with an injured abdominal muscle which will keep him out at least a week. Jaxson Hayes and Christian Koloko have filled in at center when Davis has been out, but JJ Redick has also seen success with small-ball lineups. 1 27-19
12
Mavericks
Dallas has put together a nice stretch as it awaits the eventual return of Luka Doncic, winning three of four games, including one in OKC. P.J. Washington has been a kind of bellwether for the Mavs, as he’s shooting 45% from 3-point range in wins, compared to just 25% in losses. 1 26-23
13
Timberwolves
Four straight wins for the Wolves, who have been getting it done on both ends of the floor. Jaden McDaniels is one of the key components, as he’s starting to turn around his disappointing season with averages of 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals on 55/41/82 splits over his last 10 games. 1 27-21
14
Kings
Well you can’t rattle off that many wins without expecting to eventually hit a few bumps in the road. In the Kings’ case, those bumps have literally happened ON the road, as they’ve fallen to the Nuggets, Knicks and 76ers during their current trip. The defense, which had been the key to their recent success, has fallen off of late. 2 24-23
15
Warriors
The Warriors are back above .500 after their biggest win of the season on Wednesday against the league-best Thunder — their third victory in the last four games. Steve Kerr has been playing every card he has, even starting rookie stretch-big Quinten Post against OKC, but the good news is they’re starting to get healthy. However, it still seems like Golden State has to do something, even if it’s a fringe move, in advance of next week’s deadline. 5 24-24
16
Suns
The Suns have won seven of their last 10 games as Devin Booker has caught fire, averaging 29 points on 49/38/91 splits during that stretch. Nick Richards has fit right in as the team’s new starting center, putting up 11 points and 10 rebounds per night. Now, will Jimmy Butler be their next acquisition? And if so, how much does that raise their ceiling? 1 25-22
17
Magic
The return of Paolo Banchero hasn’t exactly been the boon Magic fans were hoping for, as they’ve gone 2-7 since he came back from an oblique injury. The offense has been putrid with him on the floor during that stretch, averaging a meager 99 points per 100 possessions. 2 24-26
18
Heat
Miami appears to be out of the Jimmy Butler business — at least for the foreseeable future — and now the question is whether any offer will be enticing enough for Pat Riley and Co. to pull the trigger. In the meantime the Heat are staying right on the fringe of the coveted No. 6 seed, which would avoid the Play-In round. — 23-23
19
Pistons
The Pistons had a rough end to their road trip with three straight losses, but overall they’re still in good shape in terms of their postseason positioning. Of all Detroit’s accomplishments this season, going from 25th to 16th in defense has to be one of the most impressive. 3 24-24
20
Hawks
Man, what a bummer. Jalen Johnson is one of the most exciting players in the league, and now that he’s out for the rest of the season, the Hawks’ “puncher’s chance” status has all but evaporated. Johnson is one of just five players this season averaging at least 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game. The others are Nikola Jokic, Domantas Sabonis, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Alperen Sengun. 1 22-27
21
Spurs
Wemby showed just how special he is in the Paris games, but unfortunately the Spurs have continued to drop farther out of Play-In contention. San Antonio has now lost eight of its last 10, allowing a league-worst 121 points per 100 possessions during that stretch. — 21-24
22
Bulls
Just a classic Bulls week, getting blown out by the struggling Warriors and 76ers before somehow beating the Nuggets. Chicago is at risk of losing its No. 10 spot in the Eastern Conference as the streaking 76ers are hot on their tail. This is going to be a very interesting trade deadline. — 21-28
23
76ers
Here … come … the … Sixers? Four straight wins — all without Joel Embiid and two and a half without Paul George — have provided a brief glimmer of hope that this season might not end up as a total wash. Tyrese Maxey has taken matters into his own hands offensively, averaging 33 points and 6.5 assists during the winning streak on 53% shooting. Philadelphia is now one game behind the Bulls in the loss column for the final East Play-In spot, and who would have thought that would be a positive development at this stage in the season? — 19-28
24
Trail Blazers
Five wins in six games for the Blazers, who have come back from the dead to make a push toward the 20-win mark. Defense has been the key, as they’ve allowed just 106 points per 100 possessions during that stretch. Deandre Ayton has been a monster of late, averaging 19 points and 14 rebounds in his last three games. — 19-29
25
Raptors
Would you look at that? Five straight wins for the Raptors, who have absolutely locked up defensively to the tune of 97 points per 100 possessions. No, the competition hasn’t been great, but these certainly weren’t games that Toronto was winning earlier this season. 3 15-33
26
Nets
The Nets finally found a team they could beat, but unfortunately it was a bad win for their tanking efforts as they distanced themselves further from the Hornets and Pelicans. Brooklyn is 3-12 in its last 15 games with a minus-12 net rating — only the Wizards have been worse. 1 15-33
27
Hornets
Whenever it seems the Hornets are starting to build a little momentum, LaMelo Ball gets hurt. Charlotte is 1-12 this season without him, so, yeah, the outlook is bleak until he can come back. — 12-34
28
Pelicans
New Orleans has most of its players back — outside of Brandon Ingram who has essentially been replaced by Trey Murphy — and yet it’s still lost four straight after a brief winning stretch. The good news is Zion Williamson looks healthy and dynamic, averaging nearly 30 points over his last three games on 63% field goals. 2 12-37
29
Jazz
Lauri Markkanen’s weird season continues, as he’s gone 3 for 20 from 3-point range over his last two games. Rookie Isaiah Collier stayed on his upward trajectory, however, averaging 11 points, eight assists and four rebounds in the previous three games on 52% shooting. — 11-36
30
Wizards
The league’s first 40-loss team has shown no signs of improvement, dropping six straight games by double-digits, and 15 straight overall. The good news is that Jordan Poole thinks he’s “definitely” an All-Star … we won’t hold our breath on that one. — 6-41
The NBA season is in full swing and teams are starting to separate themselves in the standings. The Golden State Warriors have also made a huge jump up the rankings, while the Philadelphia 76ers are gaining momentum with some key wins.1. Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets remain at the top of the power rankings with their star-studded lineup and high-powered offense. Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving have been unstoppable on the court, leading the Nets to a league-best record.2. Los Angeles Lakers
The defending champions are still a force to be reckoned with, despite some recent injuries to key players. LeBron James and Anthony Davis continue to lead the way for the Lakers, who are looking to defend their title this season.3. Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are once again among the top teams in the league. The Bucks have been dominant on both ends of the court and are a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.4. New York Knicks
The New York Knicks have been a pleasant surprise this season, led by Julius Randle and RJ Barrett. The Knicks have been lighting up the scoreboard with their high-scoring offense and have quickly climbed the rankings.5. Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors have made a huge jump in the power rankings thanks to the return of Stephen Curry and the addition of Kelly Oubre Jr. The Warriors are back to their winning ways and are a team to watch as the season progresses.6. Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers are gaining momentum behind the play of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The Sixers have been playing some of their best basketball of the season and are looking like a serious threat in the East.As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how these teams continue to perform and if any other teams can make a push up the power rankings. Stay tuned for more updates on the NBA season.

Suns beat Wizards, enter league’s toughest schedule
PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns have won eight of their last 11 games, a figure that is some type of tangible progress, but not as much as it should be after Saturday’s 119-109 victory over the Washington Wizards was another uninspiring one.
Washington started the year 2-2 and is 4-35 since. Saturday’s defeat made it a 13-game losing streak.
Phoenix went up 14 early, not so much a byproduct of playing high-level basketball but by taking care of the ball and limiting second-chance opportunities. Washington cut it to six a few times in the second quarter before the Suns extended the lead to as many as 19 in the mid third-quarter.
That’s when the Suns’ mental detachment began and those categories started adding up again, predictably leading to the Wizards getting within four with 2:26 left in the third quarter. That inspired head coach Mike Budenholzer’s second timeout in under three minutes.
A 7-0 run from Kevin Durant helped stabilize the Suns back to an 11-point advantage entering the fourth quarter that grew to 15. The Wizards then hit back-to-back 3s on cue, right when it felt like Phoenix was going to be able to coast through the remaining 10 minutes.
That same feeling resurfaced again and Washington kept getting back in it, going on a 14-4 run to make it 113-109 Suns with under two minutes to go. Nick Richards sunk two free throws, and then so did Durant to put it away.
“There’s good spurts of the game and bad spurts,” Suns guard Devin Booker said. “Think our true tests are coming up this next week.”
Richards had 20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, the most rebounds by a Sun this season. He had 15 of those in the first half, the fourth time a player has done that this NBA season, per Stathead.
“It’s what we need,” Booker said of Richards. “And he’s giving his all every play on both ends of the floor. Tonight, the numbers showed that. There’s been other nights where the numbers don’t look as crazy but he still had an impact.”
Durant provided 29 points and Bradley Beal added 20 off the bench. Beal took the place of Ryan Dunn to start the second half after an ankle sprain in the first quarter ruled out Dunn.
Saturday marks the unofficial end of the Suns’ cushy portion of the schedule. It felt imperative for Phoenix to take advantage of a lackluster string of matchups in December and January, a stretch that got even easier than it was on paper because of key injuries for some of the better opponents on the slate. And yet, the Suns went 11-13 for it and now sit 23-21, eighth in the Western Conference.
Phoenix has the toughest schedule left in the league. Entering play on Saturday, there were 10 teams in the NBA with less than 20 losses and the Suns will play 19 of their remaining 38 contests against those teams, including 10 against the top five in the standings.
There are three straight games coming up against West teams more or less in its range (Clippers, T-Wolves and Warriors) before a road back-to-back against the Portland Trail Blazers is the final respite.
Here are some of the rather ridiculous bursts of high-end opposition coming (*represents second game of a back-to-back):
Feb. 5-12: at Oklahoma City, vs. Utah, vs. Denver*, vs. Memphis, at Houston*
March 2-12: vs. Minnesota, vs. LAC, at Denver, at Dallas, at Memphis, at Houston, vs. Sacramento, at LAL
March 21-April 13: vs. Cleveland, vs. Milwaukee, vs. Boston, at Minnesota, vs. Houston, at Milwaukee, at New York, vs. Golden State, vs. Oklahoma City*, vs. San Antonio, at Sacramento
The Lakers contest on March 16 will be 68 games into the year. By then, we will have certified and cemented separation in the standings that will tell us if that brutal 12-game close is more about ensuring a playoff spot, a play-in fate or worse.
This all sounds daunting, but remember that through all the visible issues on the floor last year, the Suns finished the year 35-18, including a lot of wins for a similarly-feared conclusion.
Beal was back after missing three of the last four games due to a left ankle sprain. With that brief one-game return splitting up his time out, that is now seven different gaps in the season he’s been inactive for.
Jusuf Nurkic, the Suns’ starting center last year and for the start of this year, was active for the first time since being out for six games due to the flu and a conditioning ramp-up off that. Nurkic did not play, continuing his recent move out of the rotation. Nurkic told azcentral’s Duane Rankin he and Budenholzer didn’t talk for two months and don’t have a relationship, also saying he won’t pout by bringing further chaos to a team that already has “plenty of it.” Budenholzer denied the lack of contact, noting conversations have taken place.
With Phoenix recently splitting up one first-round pick into three, it surely would ideally like to not have to use them all in a Jimmy Butler deal and save one to attach to Nurkic to add another rotation piece while also getting off the last year of Nurkic’s contract for next season. The Butler part is wishful thinking. Nurkic himself has his doubts, citing the Suns’ flexibility shortcomings with being over the second apron.
After taking 41 3s in a win over Brooklyn, Phoenix got up 40 on Saturday. That is a much-needed return back to numbers north of 35. It’s hard to say how indicative that is of progress given it came against two putrid defensive teams that you can go on auto-pilot with drive-and-kick possessions to generate ’em but it’s a start.
In a thrilling matchup, the Phoenix Suns came out on top against the Washington Wizards with a final score of 110-105. Despite facing one of the toughest schedules in the league, the Suns showed their resilience and determination to secure the win.Devin Booker led the way for the Suns with 30 points, while Deandre Ayton chipped in with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Paul orchestrated the offense with 15 assists, showcasing his veteran leadership on the court.
The Suns have been tested early in the season with a tough schedule that has included matchups against top teams like the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks. However, they have proven that they are up to the challenge and are capable of competing with the best teams in the league.
With this win against the Wizards, the Suns have improved their record to 7-3 and are looking like legitimate contenders in the Western Conference. As they continue to navigate through a difficult schedule, the Suns will need to rely on their depth and teamwork to continue their success on the court.

Notre Dame starting OL Pat Coogan expected to enter transfer portal
Notre Dame starting offensive lineman Pat Coogan is expected to enter the transfer portal, sources tell On3. He’s become famous for his pregame speeches, including one before the Sugar Bowl where he screamed, “It’s God, it’s country, it’s motherf—ing Notre Dame.”
A 13-game starter for the Fighting Irish this season, the center emerged as a leader of an offensive line that helped Jeremiyah Love rush for 1,125 yards in 2024. Coogan has started 26 career games, playing at center and left guard.
“Coogs is an unbelievable leader,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman recently said. “He is passionate about this place. He is passionate about his position. Never complained about his role, just worked, and now he’s starting center and battling.”
During Notre Dame’s Week 3 win at Purdue, junior center Ashton Craig was engaged with a block when a stray body fell into his knee. Craig tore his ACL, ending his season and opening the door for Coogan to step in at center.
Pat Coogan allowed eight quarterback pressures in 2024 and just one sack. The senior center out of Palos Heights, Ill. has one year of eligibility remaining. He was a three-star coming out of high school.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated
Notre Dame starting offensive lineman Pat Coogan is expected to enter the transfer portal, according to sources close to the team. Coogan, a redshirt freshman, has seen significant playing time this season and was considered a key piece of the Fighting Irish’s offensive line. While the reasons for Coogan’s decision to transfer are unclear at this time, it is a significant loss for Notre Dame as they look to build on their success this season. Coogan’s departure will leave a hole in the offensive line that will need to be filled by a younger, less experienced player.
It remains to be seen where Coogan will transfer to, but several schools are expected to show interest in the talented offensive lineman. Notre Dame will need to regroup and adjust their offensive line strategy as they move forward without Coogan.

Chargers’ Khalil Mack will enter free agency, play in 2025: Report
Khalil Mack will reportedly return for a 12th NFL season. (Photo By Winslow Townson/Getty Images) Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack will play in the 2025 season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. After three seasons with the Chargers, he’s set to become a free agent.
After the Chargers’ loss to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round on Jan. 11, the 33-year-old Mack said he would take some time to decide his future. Apparently, he decided he has more football left to play.
Mack has played in at least 16 games in his three seasons with the Chargers, and finished the 2024 season with six sacks, down from 17 in 2023.
Mack has been named to nine Pro Bowls during his 11-year career, which also included stints with the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears. The Bears traded Mack to the Chargers prior to the 2022 season. In 2016, Mack’s third season in the NFL, he was named Defensive Player of the Year.
This story will be updated.
According to a recent report, star edge rusher Khalil Mack of the Los Angeles Chargers will be entering free agency and is set to play for a new team in the 2025 season. This news comes as a shock to many fans, as Mack has been a key player for the Chargers since being acquired in a blockbuster trade a few years ago.Mack, a former Defensive Player of the Year, is expected to draw interest from multiple teams looking to bolster their pass rush. With his combination of speed, power, and technique, Mack is sure to be a hot commodity on the free agent market.

About 270,000 migrants waiting to enter U.S. through app Trump has vowed to end, estimates show
Washington — Approximately 270,000 migrants are estimated to be waiting on the Mexican side of the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to get an appointment to enter the U.S. through a system that President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end, according to government figures obtained by CBS News.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection estimates that around 270,000 migrants in Mexico are trying to get an appointment distributed by a government app known as CBP One, which the Biden administration has converted into the main gateway to the American asylum system.
Now, those migrants, many of whom are from countries outside of Mexico like crisis-stricken Haiti and Venezuela, are at risk of abruptly losing their ability to enter the U.S. Both Trump and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, his nominee to lead the Department of Homeland Security, have vowed to shut down CBP One.
The app allows migrants in certain parts of Mexico to request a time to be processed by American immigration officials at legal border entry points, also known as ports of entry. The Biden administration set up the process as part of a broader effort to discourage illegal immigration by offering migrants legal channels to come to the U.S. Those admitted into the U.S. under the system are allowed to apply for work permits, as well as asylum in immigration courts near their respective destinations.
As of Jan. 16, nearly 919,000 migrants had been allowed into the U.S. through the CBP One app process, which was established in January 2023, according to an internal government report obtained by CBS News. It’s unclear what the incoming administration’s plans are for those already admitted through the app, though those with pending asylum requests won’t be deportable unless they lose their cases.
Jose Eduardo Torres Cancino/Anadolu via Getty Images
Demand for CBP One appointments has been extraordinarily high, far exceeding the daily cap of 1,450 the Biden administration placed on appointments. Over the past two years, migrants have attempted to secure an appointment over 166 million times, logging into the app again and again to try their luck, the internal report shows. Wait times typically extend for months due to the high demand.
Because appointments are distributed 21 days in advance of entry dates, roughly 30,000 migrants are currently scheduled to enter the U.S. under the CBP One system in the next three weeks. Appointments have been scheduled through early February, well into the incoming administration.
It’s unclear if the Trump administration will honor those appointments. Even if CBP One is terminated, any effort to stop processing migrants at ports of entry would face legal challenges as federal courts have ruled that U.S. refugee law requires officials to process some asylum claimants at these entry points.
Outgoing Biden administration officials warned that terminating CBP One could prompt some of those waiting for an appointment to cross into the U.S. illegally, potentially upending the current four-year-low in illegal border crossings.
During its first three years, the Biden administration struggled to contain an unprecedented wave of illegal immigration, with CBP processing record numbers of migrants. But unlawful border entries plunged in 2024, mainly due to enhanced efforts by Mexico to prevent migrants from reaching the U.S. and a move by President Biden in June to severely restrict asylum.
A spike in illegal crossings that some experts predicted before Trump’s inauguration never materialized. In fact, Border Patrol is on track to record fewer than 35,000 apprehensions of migrants in January, the lowest level since June 2020, when the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a dramatic drop in migration.
Internal Border Patrol figures show the agency has averaged just over 1,000 daily apprehensions in January, a nearly 90% drop from the record-setting month of December 2023, when an average of more than 8,000 migrants crossed in the U.S. illegally each day.
Illegal border crossings have decreased so sharply that the deactivation trigger for Mr. Biden’s asylum restrictions is set to be reached next week, two U.S. officials told CBS News. By its own terms, the policy would be gradually deactivated when the average of daily illegal crossings stays below 1,500 for 28 days. The rule, however, could be scrapped or modified by Trump’s administration.
Andrea Flores, who worked on immigration policy at the White House during Mr. Biden’s first year in office, said migrants “will likely have no choice but to make an unauthorized crossing” if the CBP One process is halted.
“Numbers may be low at the border, but it is a completely unsustainable situation that remains completely reliant on Mexico to maintain,” said Flores, who is now vice president for policy at FWD.US, a bipartisan group that supports some liberal immigration policies, including a pathway to U.S. citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
Trump’s transition team did not respond to questions about CBP One, including whether officials are concerned that ending the system could fuel an increase in unlawful border crossings.
Trump has vowed to move quickly and aggressively on reshaping federal immigration policy once he’s sworn in on Monday, pledging to launch mass deportations and undo Biden administration policies.
Other Biden-era immigration programs in Trump’s crosshairs include an initiative that allows citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to fly to the U.S. if they have American sponsors. The policy, known as CHNV, was also designed to reduce illegal immigration from these countries.
Officials have admitted roughly 532,000 migrants under the CHNV program, but their fate is unclear as the Biden administration declined to extend their two-year permits to be in the U.S., and Trump officials have talked about ending the policy.
Mexico’s government agreed to accept some non-Mexican deportees, including Venezuelans, from American authorities on the condition that the U.S. would accept migrants under the CHNV initiative. Mexico has not yet said how the program’s potential end would affect that arrangement.
The incoming administration will also need Mexico’s cooperation to fulfill one of its campaign promises: reinstating the so-called Remain-in-Mexico policy that required migrants to await their asylum cases outside of the U.S.
Matthew Hudak, a longtime senior Border Patrol official who retired last year, said he was not “necessarily a fan” of CBP One when it was created, but noted the policy has had some “value” in the form of dissuading people from entering the U.S. illegally through the Rio Grande or other parts of the border.
But Hudak said the incoming administration should make the criteria for being allowed into the country through CBP One “more stringent.” He said Trump officials should assemble their own policy scheme at the border before the spring, when migration has historically increased.
“Now is the window of time,” Hudak said, ” in which (the Trump) administration has the opportunity to establish consequences, to put things into place that can send the message that then, ultimately, becomes a deterrent factor in people deciding to make that illegal entry.”
According to recent estimates, there are about 270,000 migrants currently waiting to enter the United States through the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) app, a program that former President Donald Trump vowed to end. The MPP app, also known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are processed in the U.S.The Trump administration implemented the MPP app in 2019 as part of its efforts to deter migrants from entering the country. However, critics argue that the policy puts vulnerable asylum seekers at risk and violates international law.
President Joe Biden has promised to end the MPP app and implement a more humane immigration policy. However, the process of winding down the program has been slow, leading to a backlog of migrants waiting to enter the U.S.
The situation highlights the challenges facing the Biden administration as it seeks to address the humanitarian crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border and reform the country’s immigration system. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

They followed the rules to enter the US. Now Trump wants to deport them | US-Mexico border
Jorge Luis Jiménez and his wife did exactly what the US government asked of them when they spent months trying over and over again to get an appointment to cross the border, after risking everything to flee Venezuela.
Now they may be easy targets in Donald Trump’s anti-immigration crackdown – despite living and working legally in the US.
Even more vulnerable are those still waiting on the Mexican side of the border in treacherous conditions, trying daily to score one of the coveted appointments with US immigration agents that are offered via the government’s mobile phone app called CBP One.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to end the CBP One appointment system almost immediately upon taking office. And in an interview with Fox News, he said he would go so far as to revoke legal permissions for those already stateside.
“Get ready to leave,” Trump said.
For Jiménez, home in Venezuela is such a beautiful place. But life was paralyzing under Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian regime.
So Jiménez and his wife, Milexsa, set out for the United States last summer. They trudged through the deadly Darién Gap that links South and Central America, then traveled from town to town until they reached Mexico City, where a friend welcomed them to a crowded two-room apartment and they found jobs at a local market.
Mexico was a necessary stopover. Only there could Jiménez and his wife be within the geofencing to enter a virtual lottery for one of the 1,450 daily appointments offered by the US government via the official app, CBP One, a name that has even been trademarked. Getting an appointment allows migrants to come into the US legally through the designated ports of entry along the US-Mexico border, with scope to begin the asylum application process.
Jiménez said that risking crossing on their own initiative – through the river that divides Texas and Mexico or through the desert, or elsewhere, often by relying on human smugglers – and then turning themselves in to the US border patrol wasn’t ever an option for him and Milexsa.
A view of the US-Mexico border from the Sonoran desert in January. Photograph: Thalia Juarez/The Guardian It took four months of poring over the app in Mexico City, but the couple eventually received an appointment and made their way by bus to the US’s south-west border.
They saw others like them at the border get kidnapped by organized crime gangs and paid 3,000 Mexican pesos (about $145) in bribes to avoid being held themselves. By the time they reached Texas last October, they had nothing left except permission to live and work in the US.
But soon after, they had received work permits and had found a new home in the midwest. They got jobs at a plastic factory, while their legal permissions allow them time to apply for asylum or some other form of legal relief in the US.
If Trump scraps CBPOne “that would be cutting off the dream of many people”, Jiménez said, thinking of those still waiting south of the border.
And if his own permission to stay and work stateside is suddenly revoked, too?
“That would be – no – a really serious, serious, serious, serious thing to do to someone,” he said solemnly.
Like Jiménez and Milexsa, more than 900,000 people have received appointments to present themselves at an official port of entry by using CBP One in the last two years. Named for the agency that runs it, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the app launched in 2020 during Trump’s first term. But it wasn’t until January 2023 that officials incorporated capabilities for individual migrants to apply to enter the country with pre-scheduled appointments.
Through this highly limited appointment system, the Biden administration hoped that CBP One could provide a more orderly process for people to request asylum at the US-Mexico border. Incentives include a year or two of “parole”, a legal permission to temporarily stay in the US, with leave to apply for work permits immediately.
The Biden stick to that carrot was a smattering of new border restrictions making almost all who crossed the border without an appointment ineligible for asylum. Such controversial policies probably contravene US and international law.
“It’s important for people to realize, if you came in through CBP One, then you entered the country legally,” said Jon Ewing, a spokesperson with the mayor’s office in Denver, Colorado, which has worked with the local community to help CBP One entrants apply for work permits.
But Trump and his allies disagree. In addition to Trump’s comments on ending the app, vice-president-elect JD Vance has called CBP One “the facilitation of illegal immigration” and considers people in the US on parole “illegal aliens” – a pejorative for unauthorized immigrants, who are subject to deportation.
Yet to de-legalize people’s immigration documents and explicitly target those in the US lawfully for deportation would be “an embarrassment to this country”, said Tom Cartwright, an advocate for refugees with the group Witness at the Border.
“It would just be the most heinous act of betrayal of trust that I can think of,” he continued, “for the United States to take vulnerable people and revoke their parole when they acted in good faith and they did everything that this country asked them to do.”
People from Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico await their CBP One appointments at the Casa de Esperanza shelter in Sonoyta, Mexico, in January. Photograph: Thalia Juarez/The Guardian Many of those who have come through CBP One had already tried to “get in line” for visas in their home countries before being forced to flee imminent danger, and then persevered with waiting for appointments to present themselves legally despite facing serious threats in Mexico, said Jesús de la Torre, assistant director for global migration at the Hope Border Institute.
Those still in Mexico “are not safe”, De la Torre added. “And they are not safe until they literally cross to the US side of the border. We’ve seen people kidnapped while they were waiting in line to be processed for their appointment.”
In a group of more than 100 migrants surveyed for a Hope Border Institute report, four out of five reported experiencing violence by criminal groups or state employees during their journeys in Mexico, De la Torre said. Other human rights organizations have documented people suffering kidnappings, torture, extortion and sexual assault while awaiting their CBP One appointments.
“After they do all that, they endure all that pain, all that suffering, then you are telling them that there is no option for them any more?” said De la Torre. “Or that if they cross with that pathway that you told them to, now you’re gonna prioritize them for deportation?”
At the Casa de Esperanza migrant shelter in Sonoyta, a small, dusty Mexican border town in the state of Sonora which faces the Organ Pipe national monument in Arizona, 140 people from Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras and Colombia were among those waiting earlier this month for a CBP One appointment. Some had already been waiting for eight months, they said, yet remained hopeful that Trump will not follow through with his threats to shut down the appointment system.
One family at the shelter fled their home in Guanajuato last June – a once tranquil state in central Mexico where organized crime and homicides have risen in the past few years.
“There’s a lot of rumors that the app will close but we’ve spent so much time and money to be here that I can’t give up hope. Our goal is to reach Fresno [in northern California], where my husband has family, from there we are prepared to work anywhere and do anything. I have faith in God that we’ll make it,” said the mother, 55, who asked the Guardian to withhold her identity for her security.

Photograph: Thalia Juarez/The Guardian The mandatory use of the CBP One mobile application as largely the only accepted means of seeking asylum in the US has been condemned by Amnesty International as a “violation of international human rights and refugee law”. Still, it brought some order and relief for some asylum seekers – and a boost to the US economy, which some advocates believe make the application too costly to cut.
“CBP One is a machiavellian system that changed the dynamic of migration, guaranteeing cheap labor and taxes for the US but few rights for the migrants,” said Aaron Flores Morales, co-director of the Casa de Esperanza.
“Trump will deport people to demonstrate his power but I don’t think he will cancel CBP One because the US economy will collapse without the steady flow of cheap migrant labor. Immigration was a principal part of Trump’s campaign but he has far bigger problems to face as president,” he added.
There’s no question that the Trump administration can revoke the legal protections of people who already entered the US through CBP One should officials so choose, said Muzaffar Chishti, a New York-based senior fellow at the Migration Policy Institute. But the law would suggest they will at least need to proceed case by case and allow for some form of rebuttal, which even if they issued boilerplate parole cancelation notices probably couldn’t happen overnight.
But if he wants to, Trump can discontinue use of the CBP One app on day one, meaning potential legal limbo for those who have secured appointments for dates on or after the 20 January inauguration.
“All prior practice would show they have to honor it,” Chishti said of the upcoming appointments, “but I can’t tell you that that’s what this administration is going to do.”
In Denver, Ewing said his community was still gearing up for more work authorization legal clinics this month and next. So far, they have helped roughly 4,400 people apply for their work permits, about 3,700 of whom came into the US by using CBP One.
That’s thanks in part to about 1,100 volunteers who have already put in over 13,000 hours – and are still showing up to help.
Ewing believes it would be “antithetical to our values” if Trump negates all that, perhaps in the blink of an eye.
For those who risked so much and tried so valiantly to make a legal entry: “We gave them our word, and that should mean something,” he said.
In a recent turn of events at the US-Mexico border, a group of individuals who followed all the rules to legally enter the United States are now facing the threat of deportation by the Trump administration. These individuals went through the proper channels, applied for asylum, and were granted entry into the country. They followed all the necessary steps and were hopeful for a better future in the United States. However, their hopes have been dashed as President Trump’s administration has decided to target them for deportation.
This cruel and heartless decision is tearing families apart and putting lives at risk. These individuals came to the United States seeking safety and a better life, only to face the threat of being sent back to dangerous and unstable situations in their home countries.
It is important to remember that these individuals are not criminals or threats to society. They simply followed the rules and sought refuge in a country that has prided itself on being a beacon of hope for those in need.
As Americans, we must stand up against these unjust and inhumane actions. We must demand that our government treat these individuals with the compassion and dignity they deserve. Deporting them would be a grave injustice and a stain on our nation’s values.
It is time to speak out and hold our government accountable. These individuals followed the rules to enter the US, and now it is our duty to ensure that they are treated fairly and with the respect they deserve. #ProtectAsylumSeekers #NoDeportations

Texans waive Diontae Johnson, who was released earlier by Ravens after refusing to enter a game
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans waived Diontae Johnson Tuesday after the beleaguered receiver — who was released by the Ravens earlier this season after refusing to enter a game — played just two games for them.
Johnson had one reception for 12 yards in Houston’s wild-card playoff win over the Chargers on Saturday.
He played four games for Baltimore after a trade from Carolina before being suspended for refusing to take the field and then being released on Dec. 20. He has 4,726 yards receiving in a six-year career that started in Pittsburgh.
Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said the team wasn’t worried about Johnson’s history when he was signed in late December. On Tuesday, he didn’t provide any details about why the Texans moved on from him as they prepared for Saturday’s divisional-round game at Kansas City.
“Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and we’re on to the Chiefs,” Ryans said.
The Texans signed Johnson after Tank Dell followed Stefon Diggs to the injured list with his season-ending knee injury on Dec. 21.
Johnson had two receptions for 12 yards in a win over the Titans to end the regular season in which most of the team’s starters played sparingly.
Also Tuesday, rookie tight end Cade Stover was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury that will require surgery. Stover, a fourth-round pick from Ohio State, had four receptions for 28 yards against the Chargers.

The Houston Texans have made the decision to waive wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens after refusing to enter a game.Johnson’s refusal to play in the Ravens’ game raised eyebrows across the league, and it seems that his actions did not sit well with the Texans either. Despite his talent on the field, it appears that Johnson’s attitude and behavior were not in line with what the team was looking for.
It remains to be seen where Johnson will end up next, but it is clear that he will need to make some changes in order to find success in the NFL. Only time will tell if he can turn things around and make a positive impact on a new team.

State senator pushed to the ground, arrested while trying to enter Georgia House chamber
A Georgia state senator and hardline supporter of President-elect Trump appeared to be pushed to the floor before being arrested while trying to enter the state House chamber on Thursday.
State Sen. Colton Moore, who previously tried to have Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis impeached for indicting Trump, tried to enter the House floor to attend Gov. Brian Kemp’s State of the State Address — but was ultimately led away in handcuffs.
Moore is currently banned from entering the chamber after he blasted the state Senate’s decision last year to consider a resolution to name a building at the University of North Georgia after the now-deceased former speaker David Ralston.

GEORGIA LAWMAKER SAYS WHISTLEBLOWER ALERTED HIM OF SECRET MIGRANT ROOM AT AIRPORT
Moore accused Ralston of using his office to delay court cases for criminal defendants he had represented as an attorney. Ralston claimed in 2019 that his actions were entirely legal.
“This body is about to memorialize, in my opinion, one of the most corrupt Georgia leaders that we are ever going to see in my lifetime,” Moore exclaimed at the time.
On Wednesday, Moore wrote to current House Speaker Jon Burns outlining why he thought the ban was unconstitutional and said he intended to be at today’s joint session.
“I will NEVER back down,” Moore wrote on X, sharing the letter he penned to Burns. “I will ALWAYS speak the truth and represent the people of Northwest Georgia as their trusted America First Senator.”
But when he tried to enter the chamber on Thursday, he was met by a wall of resistance and appeared to be pushed back by an attending doorman.

Moore told state troopers in attendance that he had a constitutional right to enter and that a doorman should be arrested for breaking the law.
“This is a joint session of the General Assembly. Your House rules do not apply,” Moore told the men. “I’m going into the chamber.”
Unable to get in, Moore asked a state trooper whether he was stopping him from entering. The trooper appeared to say that the doormen were responsible for who entered.
A scuffle ensued, with video showing Moore appearing to be pushed to the floor by one of the doormen. He was then surrounded by state troopers and subsequently arrested.
TRUMP CHEERS DISQUALIFICATION OF ‘CORRUPT’ FANI WILLIS, SAYS CASE IS ‘ENTIRELY DEAD’
Burns said that the incident was “incredibly unfortunate.”
“The senator refused to cooperate with doorkeepers and law enforcement and created a dangerous situation when he chose to use force against our law enforcement officers, dedicated doorkeepers and House staff,” Burns said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “I want to thank every House staff member and our entire House family for holding the line to honor Speaker Ralston’s legacy of dedicated service to our state. As you saw today, the integrity and decorum of this House are non-negotiable—period.”
Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones said that “there is real work to be done this session and the focus should be on delivering for the people of Georgia instead of personal grievances and egos.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Georgia state police and Gov. Brian Kemp’s office about the scuffle but did not receive a response in time for publication.
Meanwhile, Moore said that the state was “ruled by authoritarians” on his way out and that the ban was censorship of his voice as an elected official.
Georgia Republican chairman Josh McKoon said that he was “deeply disappointed” that Moore had been denied admission to the chamber and “shocked” that he had been taken into custody.
“It was not only legally appropriate to admit him to today’s proceedings — it was simply the right thing to do,” McKoon wrote in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta. “Our focus should be on the excellent agenda being outlined by Governor Kemp today to continue to make Georgia the best place in the country to live, work, and raise a family — not internal conflicts.”
In 2023, Georgia’s Republican Senate Caucus suspended Moore for attacking them for opposing his plan to impeach Willis for indicting Trump in an election interference case.

“The Georgia RINOs responded to my call to fight back against the Trump witch hunts by acting like children and throwing me out of the caucus,” Moore wrote on X at the time. “But I’m not going anywhere.”
Moore was the most prominent backer of a special session to impeach and remove Willis or defund her office, winning Trump’s endorsement. Kemp denounced the call as “some grifter scam” to raise campaign contributions for Moore.
The Willis case eventually unraveled, due in part to her having a romantic relationship with a prosecutor she had hired.
