  • Cynthia Erivo Wore Loewe On Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Fresh off the snowy slopes of Utah and the Sundance Film Festival, Cynthia Erivo was back in Los Angeles, dazzling us as she headed to ABC Studios for her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday.

Cynthia Erivo Wore Loewe On Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The British actress took the stage to chat about her Oscar-nominated role in Wicked, her signature war cry that’s now a pop culture moment, and the challenge of making Elphaba’s iconic songs her own.

Cynthia strutted into my heart dressed in a Loewe Spring 2025 grey mini wool and mohair dress.

Was it too short for a seated interview? Not from what I saw from her interview. But let’s not overlook the real stars of the show—her sculpted calves. Honestly, can we get her workout routine? I’m asking for a friend.

Short hemline debates aside, this look felt like a refreshing departure from her usual style. It was playful with just enough of her signature edgy to remind us why Cynthia is always one to watch. Adding to the sparkle, she swapped out her signature Christian Louboutin Dolly Boot Alta platforms for a pair of dazzling silver Christian Louboutin Hot Chick pumps that elevated the look perfectly.

The actress initially arrived in a Loewe light tan leather coat featuring a turned-up hem detail, also from the Spring 2025 collection, paired with a playful nod to Elphaba through her green Loewe Puzzle bag.

You weren’t sold on her last Loewe Spring 2025 look, but this look was pure magic.

  • Cynthia Erivo Wore the Dreamiest Sparkly Christian Louboutin ‘Hot Chick Pumps on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

    Generate Key Takeaways

Cynthia Erivo stepped out in Los Angeles on Monday in Los Angeles to appear on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” wearing a crystal-embellished pair of Christian Louboutin’s Hot Chick Glitter pumps.

Erivo has worn a great deal of black and green lately while promoting the film adaptation of “Wicked,” a fitting choice since she plays the green witch Elphaba in the movie. On this occasion, while at least one “Wicked” color reference could still be seen in her ensemble, she went for a lighter color palette with a Loewe dress hailing from the brand’s spring/summer 2025 collection.

It was a high neck, long sleeve knit minidress featuring a blend of earth tones in an understated zig zag pattern; the garment featured a flared skirt. Her large green Loewe bag offered an Elphaba sensibility to her ensemble.

For her footwear, Erivo modeled a sparkling silver crystal-embellished iteration of Christian Louboutin’s Hot Chick pump, which is identifiable by the scalloped indentation near the heel. This little dip in the outline contributes eye-catching curves to the silhouette, differentiating it from a classic pump design. The crystal-embellished version of the silhouette accentuated the actress’ sense of glamour.

FN identified the Hot Chick style, which includes silhouettes beyond the classic pump, as one of the biggest celebrity shoe trends of 2024. Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez and Reese Witherspoon were among the stars who displayed the style that year.

  • Spring Pops season to feature Cynthia Erivo, Orville Peck, and more

Keith Lockhart was appointed conductor of the Boston Pops in 1995, so naturally, there were big plans in the works for the 2020 Spring Pops season. “There were all these brochures — come celebrate Keith Lockhart’s 25th anniversary season! — that never went out, of course,” Lockhart said in a phone interview. “So everyone went, oh wow, we really have to do the 30th one.”

That 30th anniversary would be this upcoming spring season at Symphony Hall, which runs May 8 through June 7. The schedule includes an opening evening with “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo, Pride night with masked rhinestone cowboy Orville Peck, and a symphonic celebration of the music of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, featuring multiple members of the Jerry Garcia Band.

“But I have to tell you,” Lockhart said, “I’ve never been a big believer in anniversaries.”

Orville Peck performs during the Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park.Ben Stas for The Boston Globe/The Boston Globe

Musical institutions tend to celebrate the anniversaries of “people who we focus on the rest of the time anyway,” he said. In line with that, he said he doesn’t have any special projects in mind for his 30th anniversary with the Pops. “There’s all sorts of things I want to do. They’re just not because of the number of years I’ve been here. I don’t want to sound falsely modest here, but it’s not about me. It’s about the work of the Pops, and what we do, and how we survive in this weirdly changing entertainment landscape, and it’s about the music. And I hope it stays that way.”

Lockhart, who has had his current job for almost half of his life, readily admitted he’s “looking at the back half” of his time with the orchestra. He described a recent experience during the December Holiday Pops season as “wonderful” and “horrifying”: “I have people come up backstage with their small children who want to meet me. Then they whip out a picture of them with their parents meeting me — you know, 25 years ago. But on the other hand, it’s really cool to be in a position to have had influence over that period of time.”

And he isn’t sharing any concrete plans to pass the baton yet. “I can tell you definitely, I’m not going to try for Fiedler’s record,” he said — referring to the half-century tenure of Arthur Fiedler. “He died during his 50th season on the podium. I can’t imagine that would be good either for the institution or for me — I don’t mean the dying part, I mean the being there another 20 years!”

With the time he has left, Lockhart said he intends to “stand for and fight for” the power of live performances. When he took the job in 1995, he had neither an email address nor a cellphone. “You just didn’t need those things,” he reminisced wryly. “It’s a very different entertainment landscape than it was.”

The pandemic shutdown in particular “brought a lot of people you know, more into themselves and less out into the community, the world,” he continued. “I think [these next few years] are going to be critical to how we engage with the arts as a population.”

The season’s hottest ticket is almost certain to be opening night with Erivo, who received the third Academy Award nomination of her life for her performance as Elphaba in the 2024 film adaptation of “Wicked.” The 38-year-old British actress and singer’s career has been on a meteoric rise in the past decade; she won a 2016 Tony Award for her performance as Celie in Broadway’s “The Color Purple” before breaking into film in the late 2010s with roles including Harriet Tubman in the 2019 biopic “Harriet,” for which she netted her first two Oscar nominations.

Erivo was booked with the Pops prior to the release of “Wicked,” and “now, everybody knows who she is!” Lockhart said. “We’re really excited. That was a case of right place, right time; making that deal before she became a household name. It’s a great way to open.”

Following that, the season incorporates plenty of Pops traditions. The music of laureate conductor John Williams is amply represented; the orchestra plays the live soundtrack along with a screening of “Jaws” (May 9 and 10), the “Star Wars: The Story in Music” narrated concert returns with actor Jeremiah Kissel (May 15), and there’s also a program titled simply “John Williams’ Playlist” (May 29 and 31). In addition, the orchestra will provide a live soundtrack to screenings of Disney’s “Frozen” (May 24 and 31), and conductor Charles Floyd will unite the orchestra, soloists David and Tamela Mann, and the Boston Pops Gospel Choir for the annual Gospel Night (June 7).

Peck, who is billed as a “special guest” for Pride Night (June 5), will presumably be taking a night off of his recently announced four-month engagement as the Emcee in Broadway’s ongoing revival of “Cabaret” to make his Pops debut. Another first-time guest is singer/songwriter/composer Cody Fry, who has been performing with a handful of American orchestras on the heels of his viral hit “I Hear a Symphony” and his Grammy-nominated, strings-forward arrangement of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” (May 28).

That’s not to say Lockhart is totally ignoring the trappings of his 30th anniversary; after all, his last concert of the season is a celebration of his three decades on the podium, featuring Broadway talents Mandy Gonzalez and Jason Danieley, and Great American Songbook advocate singer/pianist Michael Feinstein. But Lockhart doesn’t have much information beyond that.

“It’s being planned by my staff,” he said. “I don’t know what’s on it!”

  • James Mangold, Cynthia Erivo Honored at Sundance Opening Night

James Mangold misses the era when movies weren’t embarrassed to make audiences feel something. The director of the Bob Dylan musical biopic “A Complete Unknown” and comic book adaptation “Logan” believes there’s a growing hostility to films that wear “their hearts on their sleeve.”

“Most of my generation, my peers, have been generally fascinated by irony or detachment. I never felt completely at home in that idiom because I felt those [films] were cool and clever, but not necessarily moving,” the newly minted Oscar nominee said at Sundance’s annual gala on Friday night, where he was feted with the second-ever Trailblazer Award (the first was bestowed to Christoper Nolan in 2024). “Movies that put their feelings on the line, the way we talk about them and use words like melodramatic or chewing the scenery or too much, we kill some of the fearlessness [of directors].”

Mangold expressed his excitement in returning to Sundance, where the filmmaker got his start in 1994 when he attended the Sundance Lab to develop the script for “Cop Land.” He was back the following year with his first feature, “Heavy,” which won the directing prize. He’s since made films that span genres and styles, from unsettling dramas (“Girl, Interrupted”) and superhero sequels (“Logan” and “The Wolverine”) to big-budget blockbusters (“Ford v Ferrari” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) and portrayals of musical greats (“Walk the Line” and “A Complete Unknown”). His latest film earned him Academy Award nominations for best director, adapted screenplay and best picture.

“[Filmmakers] don’t make anesthesia,” he said while accepting his award at the annual fundraiser, held at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Park City. “We don’t need to make things that help people pass idle time.”

At this point in his remarks, someone in the back of the room shouted, “That’s what TikTok is for!”

A flustered Mangold wasn’t sure if the heckler was agreeing with him. “Did you like that or didn’t like it?” he asked, to which the bold audience member replied: “I loved it!”

After collecting his thoughts, Mangold concluded, “In this time of irony and snark and internet nightmares, we need sincerity and earnestness more than ever. That doesn’t mean every film needs to be a history lesson or depressing or weepy. It just means we shouldn’t be embarrassed to feel shit and show it.”

The importance of arts in the culture was a recurring theme of the night. “Never before in the history of mankind has the voice of the artists been more vital — to speak truth to power, to keep us connected to our humanity,” Glenn Close said while introducing Sundance Institute’s founding director Michelle Satter. In an emotional speech, Satter, who was embraced with a standing ovation, tearfully told the audience that her Palisades home burned down in the Los Angeles wildfires. “Leading with love and building community is our essential way forward,” Satter, who was one of Sundance founder Robert Redford’s first ever hires, said.

Other guests, adhering to the “mountain chic” dress code, included Jon Hamm, Joel Edgerton, Olivia Colman, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” director Marielle Heller, “Sorry to Bother You” filmmaker Boots Riley and “Survivor” svengali Mark Burnett, president Donald Trump’s recently appointed special envoy to the United Kingdom. Sara Bareilles closed the evening with a two-song set, first performing a ballad she wrote for the new Sundance film “Come See Me in the Good Light,” as well as the “She Used to Be Mine” from her Broadway hit “Waitress.”

Colman presented the night’s Visionary Award to Cynthia Erivo, who just received her third Oscar nomination, this time for playing Elphaba in “Wicked.” Colman, wearing a “Wicked”-esque tiara, recounted her first time seeing Erivo on screen, in Steve McQueen’s 2018 heist thriller “Widows.”

“I thought, now there’s a bright, young American woman who is going places,” Colman recalled, only to discover that Erivo is, indeed, English and has a British accent.

While accepting the trophy, Erivo picked up the bedazzled crown that Colman left on the podium and adjusted it to her head. “It must be worn,” she said. “That’s the point of it.”

Erivo, who is only an Academy Award away from EGOT status, having won a Grammy and Emmy for her performance as Celie in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple,” said she had to look up the definition of visionary upon hearing she’d be receiving this honor.

“Yes, I know what it means. But what does it mean,” she said. “A visionary is someone who can see into the future. I’ve never considered myself as a person who can see what’s to come. I’ve been blindly following what I think might be my path. I put one foot in front of the other and keep chipping away at the road until I can reach my destination.”

Last night, the Sundance Film Festival kicked off with a star-studded opening night ceremony, where acclaimed filmmaker James Mangold and talented actress Cynthia Erivo were honored for their outstanding contributions to the film industry.

Mangold, known for directing films such as “Logan” and “Ford v Ferrari,” was presented with the Sundance Institute Vanguard Leadership Award for his innovative storytelling and commitment to pushing boundaries in filmmaking. In his acceptance speech, Mangold expressed his gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of supporting independent filmmakers in the industry.

Erivo, who has garnered critical acclaim for her performances in films like “Harriet” and “Widows,” received the Sundance Institute Courage Award for her fearless portrayal of complex and powerful characters on screen. In her acceptance speech, Erivo thanked the festival for championing diverse voices in film and stressed the importance of telling authentic and inclusive stories.

The opening night ceremony also featured a screening of the highly anticipated film “Passing,” directed by Rebecca Hall and starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga. The film, which explores themes of race and identity in 1920s Harlem, received rave reviews from attendees and is already generating Oscar buzz.

As the Sundance Film Festival continues, we look forward to seeing more groundbreaking films and celebrating the talented individuals who bring these stories to life on the big screen. Congratulations to James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo on their well-deserved honors!

  • Sundance 2025 Kicks Off With Cynthia Erivo, Jon Hamm and Abby Wambach

“Our family, we have a word we say when we are in the middle of being scared and excited — it’s scited,” said Abby Wambach, the two-time Olympic gold medal winning soccer player. “That’s me right now: scited.”

It was Friday night, the first full day of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and celebrities and filmmakers were packed into a luxury hotel ballroom in sweaters and snow boots for a gala, which raised $1.5 million for the Sundance Institute, the nonprofit founded by the actor Robert Redford that supports independent artists.

The 450-person event took place in the vast ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley, a new hotel at one of the bases of the Deer Valley ski resort, where lift tickets cost about $300 a day and snowboarding is still prohibited.

The Sundance Institute proceeded with the festival amid wildfires in Southern California, which have affected many in the entertainment industry and beyond, to bring its community together, organizers said.

“What gets us through, and moving forward, is the art form and the ability to tell these stories,” said Ebs Burnough, the chair of the board of trustees for the Sundance Institute, when asked if he felt uncomfortable about holding the festival this year.

“Not every story is light and easy, but we have to tell them,” he said. “This is what storytellers do.”

The Sundance Film Festival, held nearby in Park City for more than 40 years, is credited with catapulting the careers of once-unknown talent, including Quentin Tarantino, Kristen Stewart and Christopher Nolan, and is now full of recognizable faces presenting big new projects while clomping in the snow and networking on Main Street.

Ms. Wambach was in Utah for the premiere of “Come See Me in the Good Light,” a documentary directed by Ryan White about two lovers who explore love and morality after receiving an incurable diagnosis. Ms. Wambach and her wife, the author Glennon Doyle, are executive producers on the film.

“It’s my first Sundance, and it’s my first time being part of a film,” Ms. Wambach said. “This is so exciting to be a rookie.”

The actor Jon Hamm, who was starring in “The Big Fix” a new audio drama from Audible about corruption in 1950s Los Angeles, was surrounded by gala attendees shaking his hand and asking for photos.

He said he had difficulty recognizing people covered in winter gear.

“Everybody isn’t in tuxedos here,” he said. “It’s like, ‘Do I know you?’ They have hats on, so I can’t tell.”

Cynthia Erivo, who was wearing a wrap dress and big, clunky silver earrings, arrived encircled by an entourage. She had just been nominated for an Oscar for best actress for her role in “Wicked,” and was coming off a whirlwind day of media appointments and events.

“We all love coming to Sundance because there are more indie, more off-the-wall ideas,” she said. “There is no pretense. You don’t have to dress up too much if you don’t want to. You just get to be cozy and see really good films.”

The festival, which opened just days after Donald J. Trump was inaugurated for a second term, has a slate this year infused with politics.

The actress Glenn Close was on the Sundance board for nearly 20 years and was thinking about current events. (She also played JD Vance’s mother in “Hillbilly Elegy,” the 2020 film based on the vice president’s memoirs.)

“There is so much discord and darkness in the world,” she said. “We have to be reminded of what it means to be human beings. Art has the ability to inspire, and we need that.”

She was at the gala to give a tribute to her friend Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of artist programs at Sundance Institute.

Around 8 p.m., guests sat down for a dinner of bronzed salmon and speeches reflecting on the impact of the Sundance Institute.

The actress Olivia Colman, whose film “Jimpa,” about a mother taking a nonbinary teen to visit their gay grandfather, premiered Thursday at a packed Eccles Theatre, took the stage to give Ms. Erivo the Visionary Award.

Ms. Colman, wearing face glitter and a costume tiara, lauded Ms. Erivo, “as a human, and as an actor, or as a singer, or activist, and ally, and a fashion icon, and as a frankly mind-bending practitioner of a whole load of gym exercises I can’t even name.”

Ms. Erivo walked on stage to a round of applause before putting the tiara on her own head. “It can’t be left here,” she said. “It must be worn.”

Throughout the program, audience members speculated on the festival’s future following the announcement by organizers about plans to move to a new location in 2027, which could include Cincinnati, Boulder, Colo., or Salt Lake City, with ancillary screenings in Park City.

“There is tons of traffic, it’s really hard to get around, it’s really hard to get housing, it’s expensive,” explained Amanda Kelso, the chief executive of the Sundance Institute.

“We love Park City, we love the community, but we also acknowledge that we need to think, ‘How are we going to be sustainable for the next 40 years?” Ms. Kelso said.

Mr. Hamm said if the festival moved it should adopt a new name: “I think that’s the only fair way to honor this and honor what the new thing will be.”

But if Cincinnati is selected, he joked, “we can water ski on the river.”

Sundance 2025 is officially underway, and this year’s festival has kicked off with a star-studded lineup of guests. Among the notable names in attendance are actress Cynthia Erivo, actor Jon Hamm, and retired soccer player Abby Wambach.

Erivo, known for her powerful performances in films like “Harriet” and “Widows,” is sure to bring her signature talent and charisma to the festival. Hamm, best known for his role as Don Draper in the hit TV series “Mad Men,” is also a fan favorite at Sundance. And Wambach, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, brings her unique perspective as a former athlete turned activist.

With such a diverse and talented group of individuals in attendance, Sundance 2025 promises to be a memorable and thought-provoking experience for all who attend. Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from the festival!

  • Cynthia Erivo reacts to director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar snub despite film getting 10 nominations | Hollywood

    Jan 25, 2025 08:37 PM IST

Cynthia Erivo was nominated in the Best Actress category for her work as Elphaba in Wicked. The actor has now questioned director Jon M. Chu’s snub.

Cynthia Erivo is basking in the massive success of her latest release Wicked, and her nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category. The film scored an impressive 10 nods, including one for Best Picture. However, director Jon M. Chu was shut out in the Best Director category, a fact that is still not sitting well with the actor. In an interview with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor shared her thoughts on the snub. (Also read:

What Cynthia said about the snub

During the chat, when Cynthia was asked about Jon M. Chu not getting into the top five, the actor said: “I don’t know. I wish people understood just how much work has to go into creating a big, giant behemoth like Wicked. None of that can happen without his vision. It just isn’t possible. He is the who can see who is right for this, who cast us in these roles, who asked for nine million tulips, who says he wants to build a real set so it feels embedded in reality. It’s him! He says he wants the camera right in Elphaba’s face when she walks down the steps in the Ozdust Ballroom. There is a kind of vision that you have to have in order to be in control of something that could run away from you very quickly if you don’t know what to do.”

She went on to add, “I think he is an exquisite director. The people that he put in charge of every department! That also takes skill.”

    More details

  • ‘Wicked’ Oscar nominations: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and more

Let us be glad, let us be grateful — “Wicked” has earned 10 Oscar nominations.

Universal’s big-screen take on the blockbuster musical was recognized on Thursday morning for the performances of lead actress Cynthia Erivo and supporting actress Ariana Grande, costume design, production design, film editing, sound, makeup and hairstyling, visual effects and original score.

“Wicked” fans also can rejoicify that the movie was among the nominees in the category of best picture.

The Universal release has grossed $709 million at the global box office since it hit theaters last Thanksgiving, making it Hollywood’s highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical. It also set a record with its digital release on New Year’s Eve, collecting $26 million in its first day and $70 million in its first week.

This also means “Wicked” is among the Oscar-nominated adaptations of Broadway musicals — 10 of which went on to win best picture, the most recent being 2002’s “Chicago.”

“Wicked’s” Oscar nominations are the latest update in its awards haul, following its five Screen Actors Guild award nominations and its 11 Critics Choice Awards nominations. It also took the top prize from the National Board of Review. Earlier this month, the movie took home the Golden Globe for box office achievement out of its four nominations.

Set before Dorothy’s arrival in “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked” centers on the two women who become Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, and the change in their friendship when society pits them against each other. Jon M. Chu directs the two-part adaptation of the Stephen Schwartz stage musical phenomenon, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, L. Frank Baum’s 1900 fantasy novel and the 1939 film adaptation. The second film, titled “Wicked: For Good,” hits theaters on Nov. 21.

Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang — the latter of whom is part of the “Wicked” cast — announced the Oscar nominations on Thursday morning.

The 97th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 2, at 4 p.m. PT from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Conan O’Brien will host the ceremony for the first time.

The nominations for the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked” have finally been announced, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Among the talented actors and actresses vying for an Oscar nod are powerhouse vocalists Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Grande, known for her impressive vocal range and chart-topping hits, has been nominated for her role as Glinda the Good Witch. With her natural charisma and stunning stage presence, Grande is sure to bring a fresh and captivating take to the beloved character.

On the other hand, Erivo, who has been lauded for her powerhouse performances in films like “Harriet” and “The Outsider,” is nominated for her role as Elphaba, the misunderstood and complex Wicked Witch of the West. Erivo’s emotional depth and powerhouse vocals are sure to bring a new level of depth and complexity to the iconic character.

In addition to Grande and Erivo, other talented actors nominated for their roles in “Wicked” include Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, who plays the enigmatic and charming Wizard, and Emmy Award winner Billy Porter, who takes on the role of the conniving and manipulative Madame Morrible.

With such a star-studded cast and a beloved source material, “Wicked” is poised to be a major contender at the upcoming Oscars. Fans can’t wait to see these talented performers bring their A-game to the big screen and potentially take home the coveted golden statue.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were equal partners for Wicked, both in front of and behind the camera.

The actresses opened up about working together to establish equal salaries while filming the two-part movie musical in a joint interview with Variety published on Thursday, January 2. “We went through our contracts together and called each other up,” Grande, 31, shared. “[We were like,] ‘Did you see that? What do you think about that? Let’s get together.’”

Erivo, 37, added: “We both went through it — ‘What number are we doing? How do you feel about that?’ We were really f—ing honest. And that’s really rare. People don’t do that.”

Noting that she and Erivo are “very different,” Grande told the outlet that “her needs [became] my needs” while working on the project. Erivo reiterated her words, stating: “And her needs become mine.”

Shortly after the film’s November 2024 theatrical release, false reports spread online that Grande was paid millions more for her role as Glinda than Erivo for her role as Elphaba.

“Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder,” a spokesperson for Universal Pictures told Us Weekly in a statement at the time. “The women received equal pay for their work on Wicked.”

A source close to Grande also told Us that the rumors “started on Reddit” and were “completely not true.”

Director Jon M. Chu praised the women’s equal pay negotiations in Thursday’s Variety interview. “This is a modern production,” he stated. “This is what Hollywood should reflect. These are co-CEOs of ‘Wicked Inc.’”

Based on the Broadway musical and 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, a.k.a. Glinda the Good Witch, before and during the events of The Wizard of Oz. The plot follows the two women as their relationship develops from rival roommates to best friends to unlikely rivals amid the backdrop of societal turmoil in Oz.

Grande and Erivo’s decision to share salaries and contracts comes as no surprise to fans of Wicked — which hit theaters in November 2024 — as the pair share a strong friendship on and off the big screen. The two have even gone viral for getting emotional in several of their press tour interviews.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Know What Glinda and Elphaba Mean to Wicked Fans

The emotional press tour for Wicked continues on to awards season as the film hits its digital release. And listen, at this point complaining about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s displays of sisterhood is tired from anyone who hasn’t shot two films back to back and sung the musical’s iconic songs live.

These women became Elphaba and Glinda for the fans and it shows. In an interview with Variety, the stars discussed their transformations—particularly Grande. As one of the most recognized global pop superstars, she had to completely become unrecognizable in the role and perhaps reach to the roots of who she truly has been all along: a theater kid at heart with a dream to play a role of a lifetime.

“Maybe people underestimate how long we spent finding and disappearing into these women,” Grande told the trade. “So when certain inflections or mannerisms take time to melt away, sometimes people poke fun. But we had a job to do, and we had things to get lost in—because that’s what the piece required.”

She added that she was likely to keep Glinda with her into her next evolution. “I think that might stay,” she said, in particular referring to her new Old Hollywood lilt. “Galinda required a lot of vocal work for me. Certain things maybe won’t melt away. Some will, but I’m really grateful for the pieces that will stay with us forever. What a beautiful thing to be left with, and to feel the ghost of every day.”

For Erivo, becoming Elphaba meant taking a for the visible representation of anyone who’s felt marginalized. In the days since the film’s release, Erivo has been touched by outpouring of love for the Ozdust Ballroom scene. Anyone who’s ever felt othered knew exactly what Elphaba felt the moment she stuck out upon arrival at the social gathering among Ozians and Shiz students. “I was talking to a friend earlier this week,” Erivo said, “and he was like, ‘I just want to confirm for you that you were bullied.’ This moment gave me the opportunity to revisit, process, feel it again, and share it.” And it made the instant where Galinda joins her in dance to accept her the core of the film’s messaging of belonging.

To Grande, that moment juxtaposed with the film’s opening says a lot about the importance of sisterhood and allyship. The film’s opening is her character lighting an effigy of her friend, Wicker Man-style. “Much like how hard the Ozdust felt for you, that’s how it felt to light you on fire a million times in a row!” she said of the emotionally challenging task.

As a true Wicked fan, Grande recalled how the story has always been about the somehow radical notion that we need to stick together with those we love, no matter how different they are, in the face of the glossy Emerald City facade of fascism behind the curtain. “When Wicked first came out on Broadway, I remember the people in my life having that exact discussion,” Grande shared. “It’s time for people to say, ‘Oh, how can I be a better ally?’ Because that’s how we’ve always survived. We’ve always been able to survive with those friendships and those allies.”

Erivo added, “The thing that keeps coming back to me is how much people need it,” she said. “It gives people the permission to think of themselves as people that can help. It might not be easy, but it isn’t impossible. That’s the sort of thing that permeates.”

Wicked is out in theaters now and is also available on digital.
