  • No. 1 Irish Welcome No. 11 Blue Devils For Monday Night Hoops On ESPN – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

No. 1 Irish Welcome No. 11 Blue Devils For Monday Night Hoops On ESPN – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — No. 2 Notre Dame (22-2, 13-0) hosts No. 13 Duke (20-5, 11-2) on Monday night in a battle of two of the top three teams in the ACC. The game will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and is presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Duke is known as a defense-first squad, and this year is no exception. The Blue Devils are one of two ACC teams holding opponents under 60 percent from the floor (North Carolina), and Duke is allowing just 31.7 rebounds per game. Notably, Notre Dame leads the conference with 44.0 total rebounds and 31.6 defensive rebounds per game. Unsurprisingly, the Irish lead the league with a 10.6 rebounding margin, and Duke is second at 7.5.

The Blue Devils have had the same five starters for all 25 games this season and often go as freshman Toby Fournier does. The Canadian product leads the team with 13.5 points per game and 29 total blocks. She is also averaging 5.3 boards per game, second on the team behind Jadyn Donovan (6.8). Ashlon Jackson is a big threat from beyond the arc for Duke, averaging 2.5 3FGM per game and shooting 42.5 percent from deep this season.

Notre Dame is coming off its third consecutive victory of at least 30 points. On Thursday, the Irish beat Pitt for the 11th consecutive time, this time by a score of 88-57. Olivia Miles had 28 points and knocked down eight buckets from the beyond the arc, tying the Notre Dame single-game 3-pointer record set in 1998 by Shelia McMillen. Sonia Citron also exploded from deep, starting 4-4 from 3-point range and finishing the game 8-9 from the floor with 22 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the year.

While she had an off night at Pitt, Hannah Hidalgo continues to be the best two-way player in the nation, ranking second in points per game (25.2) and second in steals per game (4.1). She notched a season-high 7 steals against the Panthers and posted her 57th game with 10+ points in as many tries.

Notre Dame is 18-4 all-time against Duke and 6-1 at home. Monday’s game will air on ESPN at 6 p.m. Beth Mowins and Debbie Antonelli will be on the call, and the game is sold out.

Get ready, Fightin’ Irish fans! The No. 1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish are set to take on the No. 11 ranked Duke Blue Devils in an epic Monday night showdown on ESPN.

The Fighting Irish have been dominating the competition this season, with an impressive record and a strong showing in conference play. Led by their talented roster and experienced coaching staff, Notre Dame is ready to defend their home court and show why they are the top team in the nation.

But they will be facing a tough challenge in the Blue Devils, who have been playing at a high level and are hungry for a big win against a top-ranked opponent. With their talented lineup and strong defense, Duke will be looking to pull off the upset and make a statement in this highly anticipated matchup.

So mark your calendars and get ready to cheer on the Fighting Irish as they take on the Blue Devils in what is sure to be an exciting and intense game. • Brett Favre believes Mark Gastineau exchange ‘a setup’ by ESPN

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre shared his thoughts on the recent exchange between Mark Gastineau and ESPN, calling it “a setup.” In a recent interview, Gastineau, a former NFL player, got emotional while discussing his battle with health issues and blamed the NFL for not taking care of former players. Favre believes that ESPN intentionally put Gastineau in a difficult position to elicit a strong emotional response for the sake of ratings. Favre expressed his disappointment in the network’s tactics and called for more respectful and thoughtful journalism when covering sensitive topics like player health and safety.

  • 49ers’ Brock Purdy signs four-year, $196 million contract, ESPN predicts – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

It seems very likely the 49ers will pay quarterback Brock Purdy this offseason.

How large of a contract will the artist formerly known as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ land? That remains to be seen. However, based on the quarterback market over the last two years, many predict the 25-year-old signal caller could be paid close to, if not more than $50 million per season.

And that includes ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who predicted the figures of Purdy’s impending deal with the 49ers in his latest 2025 offseason predictions column.

Graziano’s prediction: Four years, $196 million, $112 million guaranteed — which would be 10th among quarterbacks in average annual value.

“The threat of the franchise tag certainly gives the 49ers some leverage, and if Purdy is not determined to play hardball and max out his contract in the upper-$50-million-per-year range, there’s a deal to be made here,” Graziano wrote.

“Some of the people I talked to expect that the framework would likely build out from the contract Daniel Jones signed with the Giants two years ago (four years, $160 million with $81 million guaranteed). But it would obviously be adjusted upward for inflation and based on superior performance.”

This contract would be worth an average annual value of $49 million, which — as Graziano pointed out — is the 10th-highest behind Dallas’ Dak Prescott ($60M), Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence ($55M), Green Bay’s Jordan Love ($55M), Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow ($5M), Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1M), Detroit’s Jared Goff ($53M), Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert ($52.5M), Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson ($52M) and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts ($51M).

Purdy is coming off a down 2024 NFL season, completing 300 of 455 passes (65.9 percent) for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while recording 323 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in 15 games this season.

He did, however, lead the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances in each of his first two seasons, one of which resulted in a near Super Bowl LVIII win over the Kansas City Chiefs last year, something most of the quarterbacks on the aforementioned list have not done for their respective teams.

That has to be worth something, right?

Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast

In a stunning move, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive four-year, $196 million contract, according to ESPN predictions. The deal, which would make Purdy one of the highest-paid players in the league, is a clear sign of the team’s confidence in the young signal-caller.

Purdy, who was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has shown immense potential in his short time in the league. With a strong arm and impressive accuracy, he has quickly become a fan favorite in San Francisco.

ESPN’s prediction of Purdy’s massive contract is a testament to his potential and the high expectations the team has for him. If he can continue to develop and improve, he could lead the 49ers to great success in the coming seasons.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting official confirmation of Purdy’s contract, but if ESPN’s prediction is accurate, it could be a game-changer for the 49ers and their quest for another Super Bowl title. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • ESPN Releases Official Trailer for “The Buddy Way” Debuting Wednesday, January 29 on ESPN2 and ESPN+

ESPN has released the official trailer and key art for “The Buddy Way” – a feature-length documentary on the historic life and career of Coach Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens III ’79.  Directed by Rory Karpf, executive produced by Peyton Manning, and produced by Omaha Productions, the documentary will premiere on January 29 at 5pm ET on ESPN2 and will be available to stream on ESPN+ following its linear debut.

“The Buddy Way” explores Teevens’ inspiring journey, starting from his early years in Pembroke, MA, and spanning his four-decade-long coaching career. The documentary highlights his championship successes as a multi-sport athlete, his pivotal role at the Manning Passing Academy, and the groundbreaking innovations he made on and off the field that still make him a hero to so many.

“We are honored to share Buddy’s story and preserve his legacy,” said Executive Producer Peyton Manning. “Buddy’s motto as a coach and leader was ‘adjust and improvise.’ But it was more than a motto; Buddy was a true football innovator. He hired female coaches in the college ranks before anybody else, and he emphasized smarter and safer tackling long before the practice was adopted across the sport. Buddy was a terrific coach, but the legacy Buddy leaves behind extends well beyond his success on the field.”

“Buddy Teevens lived a full life,” said Executive Producer Murry Bowden. “He had a major impact on the game of football and the game of life. Documenting this will provide future generations insight into an extraordinary husband, father, coach and visionary. (My wife) Polly and I are delighted to have provided the resources to capture his life on film. We hope this documentary provides inspiration to all who dream big and work hard to leave this earth a better place for future generations.”

“Simply put, Buddy was an extraordinary teacher of football and life,” said Mike Harrity, Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation said. “His classroom was the football field and the ripple effect of his positive impact will be felt for generations to come. Thank you to Polly and Murry Bowden ’71, director Rory Karpf, Peyton Manning, Omaha Productions and so many more for sharing Buddy’s inspiring life journey with the world through this powerful film.”

Through a blend of never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews with Teevens’ family and football legends, the documentary captures the profound influence he had on the sport. It also features powerful moments from two significant 2024 events: a celebration of life held at Dartmouth in May and the October renaming of the stadium in honor of his lasting legacy with Dartmouth’s football program. These heartfelt scenes provide a deeply personal and compelling portrait of Teevens—both as a man and a coach—emphasizing his resilience, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to lifting those around him.

  • Steph Curry likely to return for Warriors vs. Thunder on ESPN

Fresh off an encouraging bench-led win over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night, the Golden State Warriors are back in action for a Wednesday night showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder on ESPN.

The Thunder have the best record in the NBA and, unlike the Warriors, have not only a day of rest, but two days. So it’s a very difficult game. On the other hand, the Warriors are a little bit healthier than they were on Tuesday, so that’s important. And notably, Dennis Schröder — who exited Tuesday’s game after an awful-looking fall, but was able to return to the game — is not listed as injured.

    Here’s the full injury report.

    Warriors

Out — Draymond Green (left calf strain)

Green is nearing a return. The Warriors released an injury update on him earlier this week, ruling him out through Friday’s game against the Phoenix Suns. The hope is that he’ll practice on Saturday, and return to action on Monday against the Orlando Magic.

Out — Jonathan Kuminga (right ankle sprain)

Kuminga’s update was a little bit more severe, with the Warriors announcing on Monday that he’ll be re-evaluated in two weeks. The most likely return date for Kuminga is February 21, when the Dubs visit the Sacramento Kings in their first game out of the All-Star break.

Probable — Steph Curry (bilateral knee injury management)

Curry was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup less than two hours before the game. It wasn’t surprising that he didn’t play, as he’s only played in one back-to-back over the last two months as the team monitors his knee. But being such a late scratch had some worried that his knee was flaring up after two off-days, putting his status in jeopardy for this game. But now it looks like the Warriors were just playing it safe, and only held off on announcing it, as he seems good to go for the showdown against fellow All-Star starter Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

    Thunder

Out — Chet Holmgren (right iliac wing fracture)

Holmgren hasn’t played since suffering an injury against the Warriors back on November 10. He’s still a ways away from returning, but is expected to re-join the team this season. They’ve been the best team in the NBA without him, so his return will be scary for the league.

Out — Nikola Topić (left knee surgery)

Topić will have to wait until next year to join Nikolas Jokić, Jović, and Vučević in the esteemed active “Nikola ____ić” group. The No. 12 pick in June’s draft suffered a preseason ACL injury and will miss the entirety of the season.

Out — Ajay Mitchell (right great toe surgery)

Sadly all of my toes are just mediocre, not great. Mitchell was having an awesome season for a rookie second-round pick, but suffered an injury earlier this month that will sideline him for quite a while. OKC is still hoping he’ll return this year, though, something made more likely by the fact that they appear destined for a deep postseason run.

Out — Dillon Jones (G League assignment)

Jones was a late first-round pick in June’s draft, but hasn’t yet broken into the Thunder’s roster. He’s in the G League getting a little seasoning.

    Enjoy the action, Dub Nation!

Steph Curry likely to return for highly anticipated Warriors vs. Thunder matchup on ESPN

Fans of the Golden State Warriors have something to look forward to as star point guard Steph Curry is expected to make his return to the court for the team’s showdown against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The game, set to be broadcast on ESPN, will mark Curry’s comeback after being sidelined with an injury.

Curry’s return couldn’t come at a better time for the Warriors, who have been struggling in his absence. His leadership and scoring prowess have been sorely missed, and his presence on the court is sure to give the team a much-needed boost.

The matchup against the Thunder promises to be an exciting one, with both teams vying for a crucial win. Curry’s return adds an extra layer of anticipation to the game, as fans eagerly await his first game back in action.

Don’t miss out on the action as Steph Curry makes his long-awaited return to the court for the Warriors vs. Thunder game, airing on ESPN. It’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss!

  • Can West Virginia Get Back on Track? Here’s What the ESPN BPI Says About WVU vs. K-St

Darian DeVries and the West Virginia Mountaineers look to get back on track on Saturday evening in the Little Apple as they square off with the Kansas State Wildcats.

According to the ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI) matchup predictor, West Virginia is the slight road favorite, with a 58.4% chance of winning the game. Kansas State has a 41.7% chance.

As we’ve noted several times before here, winning in this league is tough, but winning on the road is even harder. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing at Kansas or, in this case, one of the bottom feeders early on in Kansas State – every win in the Big 12 will be earned. 58% is a pretty fair number for the Mountaineers for that very reason.

The last two games for WVU have produced emotions of extreme elation and utter disappointment. Just days after knocking off No. 2 Iowa State on the day that they honored the legendary Jerry West, they fell flat against Arizona State, who entered the game five straight. Every time the Mountaineers have lost this season, they’ve bounced back the very next time out, having yet to drop two straight.

It’s been an extremely disappointing start to the season for the Wildcats, who, on paper, looked to be a dark horse contender in the league this season. They have a handful of “bad losses” in non-conference play but have really struggled since getting into their Big 12 slate. Since beating Cincinnati in the Big 12 opener, they’ve lost six straight, three of which came by double digits.

West Virginia University’s men’s basketball team has had a challenging season so far, with a record of 12-9. However, there is still hope for the Mountaineers to get back on track and make a push for the postseason.

According to the ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI), West Virginia has a strong chance of bouncing back in their upcoming game against Kansas State. The BPI gives the Mountaineers a 65% chance of defeating the Wildcats, who currently have a record of 11-12.

This matchup will be crucial for West Virginia as they look to improve their standing in the Big 12 conference and build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. With key players like Derek Culver and Taz Sherman leading the way, the Mountaineers have the talent and skill to come out on top in this important game.

Fans of West Virginia basketball will be eagerly watching as the team looks to prove the ESPN BPI right and secure a much-needed victory. Let’s hope the Mountaineers can get back on track and finish the season strong.
