  • ESPN’s convenient Bronny James about-face shows network trying to have it two ways

The hypocrisy of ESPN now claiming disgust over Bronny James goes back most glaringly to draft day — I believe it was the second of the new two-day draft, another Adam Silver special — when its coverage tried to establish a hot market for Bronny. The network suggested on several occasions that Bronny might not be available when the Lakers chose. A Lakers reporter pulled a quote from Anthony Davis about how Bronny can “guard multiple positions” and “turn into an elite shotmaker.”

“Certainly he’s a name worth watching,” Dave McMenamin said on the broadcast. “We’re just waiting to see, like the Lakers are waiting to see, if he’ll still be available when we get to No. 55.”

Of course, the truth was always that Bronny would be drafted by the Lakers, and that he was neither ready for the NBA nor worthy of any 2024 pick. As one executive texted a few days before the draft, “If his name were Joe Thomas, we wouldn’t be talking about him. I don’t really see it right now. If he had another two years in college, it might be different but not sure.”

Bronny James was taken by the Lakers on Day 2 of the 2024 NBA Draft. NBAE via Getty Images

Still, ESPN built their entire draft coverage around a forgone nepotism pick, and now, over seven months later, tried to present Bronny’s struggles as both predictable and an indictment on LeBron’s parenting.

ESPN’s convenient Bronny James about-face: A network trying to have it two ways

In the world of sports media, it seems like everyone is always trying to have it both ways. And nowhere is this more evident than in the case of Bronny James, the teenage son of NBA superstar LeBron James.

When Bronny first burst onto the scene as a promising young basketball player, ESPN was quick to jump on the bandwagon, hyping up his every move and treating him like the next big thing. But as soon as Bronny started to face some challenges on the court, the network seemed just as quick to distance itself from him, seemingly abandoning him in favor of other, more successful athletes.

But now, in a stunning about-face, ESPN seems to be back on the Bronny bandwagon, once again hyping up his potential and acting like he’s the next big thing. It’s a convenient change of heart that has left many fans scratching their heads and wondering just what the network’s true intentions are.

Is ESPN genuine in its support of Bronny James, or is it just trying to have it both ways, using him when it’s convenient and discarding him when it’s not? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the network’s handling of the young basketball star has left a bad taste in the mouths of many sports fans.

  • It’s All Hands on Deck for ESPN’s Massive Production in Atlanta

More than 100 cameras, 100 microphones power 11 viewing options for season finale

In college sports, it doesn’t get much bigger than this.

More than five months of work comes down to a blockbuster matchup between two of the nation’s marquee brands: No. 8 Ohio State meets No. 7 Notre Dame in the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship Game tonight. ESPN has rolled into Downtown Atlanta with a massive production and operations plan to broadcast the festivities from every angle.

The College Football Playoff Championship Game returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the first time since 2019.

Among the highlights are an arsenal of more than 100 cameras, 100 microphones, and 23 mobile production facilities to support 11 viewing options in ESPN’s annual MegaCast offering, as well as the first 4K presentation of the CFP National Championship Game’s main telecast ever.

After an expanded 12-team playoff that added eight games to ESPN’s CFP slate over the past month, it is familiar territory for the broadcaster’s behind-the-scenes team of more than 850 credentialed staff: back at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium for one big bash.

It has been like seeing an old friend,” says Jarrett Baker, senior manager, remote production operations, ESPN. “You haven’t talked for a long time, life has happened, and then you get back together, and it’s like you never left. The expanded playoff has been incredible, and the team we work with is top-notch. This is why we do what we do.”

MORE FROM THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:

    The Camera Plan

ESPN’s main game production — available to selected subscribers as an upconverted 4K viewing option — will be a fully 1080p HDR production onsite. Producer Bill Bonnelldirector Jimmy Platt, and technical director Josh Miller will have more than 100 cameras and 100 microphones at their disposal to tell the story of this epic clash.

The camera layout comprises a total of 115 cameras. Among them are 12 cameras with super-slow-motion (SSMO) capabilities. There are also seven handhelds: three of them RF, one a cabled SSMO on the far sideline. All dedicated game hard and handheld cameras are Sony HDC-5500’s.

ESPN has more than 800 credentialed staffers who have worked this week preparing for tonight’s broadcast. Here, the production and operations groups take a team photo. (Photo: Allen Kee/ESPN Images)

The lineup of specialty cameras is impressive as well. There are eight end-zone PylonCams, including on the pylon at each end of both goal lines. Provided by NEP Specialty Capture, those systems have SMMO. Wireless line-to-gain PylonCams will follow the action with the first-down marker.

Two Skycams are rigged up inside the stadium, with one flying at two points in a side-to-side flight pattern. The other flies in a traditional four-point configuration with a 4K camera and AR capabilities. Aerial shots will also come from inside the stadium via an ESPN-owned and -operated drone and from outside via a fixed-wing plane.

Down on the turf, ESPN aims to take viewers deep into the action with an on-field shallow–depth-of-field rig. That RF rig is a Ronin RS3 Pro stabilizer outfitted with a Sony FX3 full-frame cinema camera.

ESPN director Jimmy Platt (left) and producer Bill Bonnell will call the shots on the main game telecast of tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship. (Photo: Phil Ellsworth/ESPN Images)

Additionally, three officials will wear MindFly BodyCams on their shirts to deliver live video feeds to the truck. The umpire, center judge, and head linesman will wear the AI-stabilized POV cameras with a built-in microphone that ESPN will monetize through its title sponsorship with AT&T as “Connected Cam” on the broadcast. The MindFly BodyCams made their CFP debuts in the semifinals at the Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl.

To provide coverage depth, as well as potential officiating assistance, ESPN will have robotic Sony 4800’s shooting at 8X speed on each goal line to catch any close break-the-plane visuals. There will also be a robo (Sony P1) on the crossbar of each goalpost.

Standard fixtures include a cart on each sideline, a jib, robos in the stadium tunnels for entrances, and hard cameras dedicated to each team’s head coach.

Roof Camera Is Back To Blend Creative With Live

The return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium — a stadium with a roof and walkable scaffolding — allows ESPN to bring back a camera angle that became popular a few years ago: a roof camera.

ESPN used a camera in the catwalk of Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the SEC Championship Game last month (Courtesy: ESPN PR)

The camera angle, first made popular by the Atlanta Falcons social- and digital-media team, blends trends in the postproduction creative space with the excitement of live. A Sony 4800 with a 24-300mm Fuji Duvo Lens will be configured as a handheld and operated by a camera operator approximately 285 ft. above the playing surface.

“It is not for those who are bothered by working at heights,” says Baker. “It looks right down on the play. We’re going to run that in 8X mode and through a Sony server, where we’ll be able to make key frames and pan-and-scan to follow the ball and give some really neat effects where we ramp the playout speed to make it very dramatic.”

Platt, Senior Associate Producer Chris Matthews, and the ESPN crew who produced the SEC Championship Game in December used this angle successfully and are excited to deploy it in their first CFP Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since 2019.

    Staying Warm in the Compound

Although tonight’s game will, thankfully, be indoors, that doesn’t mean that chilly weather in Atlanta won’t be a significant factor for the ESPN crew. The temperatures are forecast to reach only 31 degrees today, and the big production compound housing 23 mobile production trucks and office trailers is outside the stadium.

The game production is built around a core of Game Creek Video trucks. GCV Varsity A and B units will be home to the main-telecast production crew and will house support for other elements of replay, graphics, and some MegaCast options. GCV Gridiron A and B are also there to support surround studio programming, including College GameDay, pre/postgame and halftime coverage, and hits for SportsCenter. GCV Edit 1 and Edit 2 are parked to support other initiatives.

ESPN on-air talent Hannah Storm and Harry Douglas shoot a hit for SportsCenter on Sunday prior to the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship. (Photo: Rich Storry/ESPN Images)

Under the hood, the trucks host 222 channels of replay (EVS, 8X SSMO Sony replay, and TD SpotBox) and 80 transmission paths (60 out, 20 in). ESPN added more than 18 miles of fiber to Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s infrastructure and to connect the compound. CES power will be critical to keeping the compound online (and warm).

To combat the weather, ESPN weather-treated and heated the first floor of a nearby parking deck housing catering and space for crew members to eat.

ESPN’s coverage of the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship Game begins at 7:30 p.m. ET tonight. The main telecast can be seen on ESPN.

ESPN is gearing up for a massive production in Atlanta, and it’s all hands on deck for the sports media giant. With multiple events taking place in the city, including the College Football Playoff National Championship and the NBA All-Star Game, ESPN is pulling out all the stops to bring fans the best coverage possible.

From live broadcasts to behind-the-scenes features, ESPN’s team of producers, directors, and on-air talent are working around the clock to bring viewers the most comprehensive coverage of these marquee events. With so much happening in Atlanta, there’s no shortage of storylines to cover and games to analyze.

But it’s not just the on-air talent that’s working hard – behind the scenes, a team of editors, cameramen, and technical staff are ensuring that everything runs smoothly and that viewers get the best possible viewing experience. It truly is all hands on deck for ESPN’s massive production in Atlanta.

So whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or just tuning in for the big games, rest assured that ESPN has you covered. Stay tuned for all the action, analysis, and excitement coming your way from Atlanta.

  • ESPN’s Dick Vitale to call 1st game after beating cancer 4th time

Dick Vitale, the legendary voice of college basketball, is returning to the air for the first time since 2023.

The Hall of Fame broadcaster will call the Duke-Wake Forest men’s college basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Vitale, 85, has battled four different types of cancer in the past three and a half years. Most recently, he underwent surgery in the summer of 2024 after a biopsy of a lymph node in his neck showed cancer. Vitale announced on Jan. 8 that he was cancer-free.

“I am absolutely ecstatic and I can’t believe this is happening after going through five major vocal cord surgeries, 65 radiation treatments and chemotherapy for six months,” Vitale said. “It’s been a very tough journey, but all of the prayers and messages from the beautiful fans have inspired me.”

“I just hope that I can offer the people some basketball insights that can bring even more excitement to the game.”

In 2021, Vitale was diagnosed with lymphoma, months after he had multiple surgeries to remove melanoma. In 2022, he announced he was cancer-free. Then in 2023, he was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer and underwent radiation.

Vitale’s last game assignment was nearly two years ago — on April 3, 2023, calling the international broadcast of the San Diego State vs. UConn national championship for ESPN. He announced he was cancer-free for the third time in November 2023.

Vitale joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season, just after ESPN’s launch, and called the network’s first major NCAA basketball game on Dec. 5, 1979. He has gone on to call well over 1,000 games and in September 2024, he was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.

ESPN’s beloved college basketball announcer, Dick Vitale, is set to make his triumphant return to the broadcast booth after beating cancer for the fourth time. Vitale, known for his energetic and passionate commentary, has been a staple on ESPN’s college basketball coverage for decades.

Vitale, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, underwent treatment and has now been given the all-clear to return to work. His first game back will be an emotional and inspiring moment for fans and colleagues alike.

Vitale has been a fighter both on and off the court, and his perseverance and positive attitude have been an inspiration to many. His return to the broadcast booth is sure to be a special moment for all who have followed his career and admired his dedication to the game.

Tune in to ESPN to catch Dick Vitale’s first game back behind the mic, and join in celebrating his incredible strength and resilience in the face of adversity. #DickieVStrong

  • ESPN’s Elle Duncan slams college football’s overtime rules

ESPN’s Elle Duncan slams college football’s overtime rules

ESPN’s Elle Duncan recently took to Twitter to slam college football’s overtime rules, calling them “ridiculous” and “outdated.” Duncan, a sports anchor and reporter for ESPN, expressed her frustration with the current system, which allows each team to start a possession from the opponent’s 25-yard line in overtime until a winner is determined.

In her tweet, Duncan argued that college football should adopt a format similar to the NFL’s overtime rules, which give both teams a chance to possess the ball and score. She also criticized the lack of fairness in the current system, highlighting instances where teams have lost games without ever getting a chance to touch the ball in overtime.

Duncan’s comments have sparked a debate among fans and analysts, with some agreeing with her assessment and others defending the current overtime rules. As college football continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see if any changes are made to address the concerns raised by Duncan and others.

  • ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt on Bristol’s New Open-Marriage Policy

ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt on Bristol’s New Open-Marriage Policy

In the post-cable universe—where ratings declines are inevitable, streaming dreams are quixotic, and multiplatform appeal is the coin of the realm—ESPN appears to be pinning its hopes on an enormous investment in live sports rights, an even more enormous investment in new platforms (Flagship, Venu, etcetera), and the anointment of a core group of talent known in Bristol as the needle-movers. There’s Pat McAfee, whom ESPN is paying $17 million per year to license his show. There’s First Take host Stephen A. Smith, who is drying the ink on a deal that will pay him at least $20 million per year. Then there’s Get Up’s Mike Greenberg and SportsCenter’s Scott Van Pelt, two other talents for which ESPN execs would gladly back up a Brink’s truck, though both Greeny and SVP make far less than Stephen A.’s asking price and what McAfee’s show costs.

McAfee’s arrangement is unique, of course, because it isn’t exclusive. The sleeveless former punter built his audience on YouTube before signing a lucrative licensing deal with ESPN. Stephen A. is a homegrown talent, but his pending deal also includes some nonexclusive opportunities—if, say, he wants to start his own lifestyle-themed radio show or pop-culture play. (Stephen A. has appeared as a guest on Fox News.) Greenberg and Van Pelt represent a slightly different tranche of talent: more old school, with radio chops, pre- and postgame bona fides, etcetera—the Posada and Pettitte of this core-four ensemble, you might say.

Recently, ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt made headlines when he weighed in on his employer’s new open-marriage policy in Bristol. The network’s decision to allow employees to pursue outside opportunities while maintaining their positions has sparked a mix of excitement and uncertainty among staff members.

In a recent interview, Van Pelt expressed his support for the policy, stating that it allows employees to explore new avenues and grow professionally without feeling confined to their current roles. He emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of innovation and creativity within the company, and believes that the open-marriage policy will help achieve this goal.

While some employees have voiced concerns about the potential for conflicts of interest or divided loyalties, Van Pelt remains optimistic about the benefits of the new policy. He believes that it will ultimately lead to a more diverse and dynamic workforce, as employees bring new skills and perspectives back to ESPN after pursuing outside opportunities.

As Bristol continues to navigate this new chapter in its history, it will be interesting to see how the open-marriage policy unfolds and impacts the company’s culture and success. Only time will tell if this bold move will pay off for ESPN and its employees.

  • Two Spurs made it to ESPN’s list of under-25 players having breakout seasons

Two Spurs made it to ESPN’s list of under-25 players having breakout seasons

Earlier in the holiday week, ESPN.com’s Neil Paine compiled a list of NBA players under-25 who, using some factors detailed below, who are having what are considered ‘breakout ‘seasons for their appreciative teams.

Since the article sits firmly behind the ESPN / Disney paywall, here are factors considered in how Paine generated that list: are under the age of 25•, are on pace for at least 2 WAR per 82 games, had under 10 career WAR before 2024-25, never previously had a season of 2.5 WAR, improved their WAR pace (per 82 games) by at least 2.5 wins this season.

The two Spurs that made the list are covered along with a brief rundown of the other young stars-in-the-making, as well. Players listed were also given by Paine production comparisons to recent and current players.

The interesting approach Paine took was to separate these players into the following categories: Top Ten draft picks, first-round selections from 11 and beyond, second-round inclusions, and finally, undrafted contributors.

Perhaps to none of our surprise, Jeremy Sochan, the former #9 pick, made it to the ‘Top Ten’ category for:

Sochan was compared production-wise to Greg Monroe and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

And perhaps to my surprise, (but probably not August Bembel’s) Julian Champagnie made it onto the list, specifically for:

Champagnie was linked to super-sub Terrence Ross, Cam Johnson, and Martell Webster.

    Other players featured:

    • Atlanta’s Dyson Daniels was compared very favorably to earlier versions of Clyde Drexler and Scottie Pippen, along with Jalen Suggs.
    • Former #1 pick, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, was linked to Juwan Howard, Brandon Ingram, and Paolo Banchero.

In the later draftees list, there were:

    • Toronto’s Ochai Agbaji was connected to the highly coveted Cam Johnson (again) and Aaron Nesmith along with Jake Layman.
    • Denver big man Christian Braun, who interestingly was compared to early-career Jimmy Butler, Aaron Wiggins, and Ed Pinckney.
    • Agbaji’s teammate Gradey Dick, every immature social media poster’s dream guy, was compared to Jeff Malone and former Spur DeMar DeRozan.
    • Memphis’ Jake La Ravia was linked to Josh McRoberts, late-career Kwame Brown, and Grant Long.
    • New Orlean’s Brandon Boston (amidst the Pelicans’ too-many-to-count injuries) was the lone second-rounder who made it and compared to OG veterans, Winston Garland, Franklin Edwards, and (personal favorite) Bryant Stith.

Pounders: Happy Holidays and what do you make of these two entries?

Exciting news for San Antonio Spurs fans! Two of our very own players have been recognized by ESPN for their outstanding performances this season. Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker IV have both been included in ESPN’s list of under-25 players who are having breakout seasons.

Murray, known for his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities, has been a key contributor for the Spurs this year. He has shown significant improvement in his scoring and decision-making, solidifying his place as a cornerstone for the team’s future success.

On the other hand, Walker IV has been turning heads with his explosive scoring and athleticism. The young guard has shown flashes of his potential throughout the season, proving that he has what it takes to be a star in the league.

Both Murray and Walker IV have been instrumental in the Spurs’ success this season, and it’s clear that they are just scratching the surface of their potential. With these two young stars leading the way, the future looks bright for the San Antonio Spurs.

Congratulations to Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker IV on this well-deserved recognition! Spurs fans, be sure to tune in to see these rising stars in action as they continue to make a name for themselves in the NBA. #GoSpursGo
