  • Girona 1-2 Arsenal: Ethan Nwaneri shines as Gunners reach Champions League last 16

Arsenal scored two goals in four first-half minutes as they came from behind to beat Girona to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League.

The Gunners were all-but through to the last 16 of the competition going into the match but build up to the game was dominated with talk about their approach for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Girona looked like they were about to pull off a shock result when they took the lead in the 28th minute.

Neto, making his Arsenal debut in goal in place of the injured David Raya, raced out of his box and Arnaut Danjuma curled the ball past him into the empty net.

Arsenal drew level with a penalty 10 minutes later through Jorginho after Thomas Partey was brought down in the area by Arnau Martinez.

The Gunners were then ahead just before half time when 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri cut in from the right hand side and curled an effort into the bottom corner.

Girona thought they had scored a second and levelled the match when Cristhian Stuani tapped in from close range in the second half but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Arsenal had a chance to add a third in stoppage time but Raheem Sterling had a penalty saved by Pau Lopez.

The result leaves Arsenal on 19 points and comfortably in the top eight heading into the knockout rounds.

Mikel Arteta has spoken about wanting to take his side away for a mid-season break and as Arsenal will not be involved in the play-off games in February, there’s a 10 day gap in their schedule where he may be able to that.

Arsenal secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Girona in the Champions League group stage, with young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri putting in a standout performance to help the Gunners reach the last 16 of the competition.

Nwaneri, who has been making a name for himself in the Arsenal youth setup, opened the scoring with a stunning long-range strike that left the Girona goalkeeper rooted to his spot. The 18-year-old showed great composure and skill throughout the match, dictating play in midfield and linking up well with his teammates.

Despite Girona equalizing in the second half, Arsenal regained the lead with a goal from veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gunners held on for the win, securing their spot in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Manager Mikel Arteta was full of praise for Nwaneri after the match, highlighting his maturity and talent on the ball. The young midfielder has been tipped for a bright future at Arsenal, and his performance against Girona only solidified that belief.

With Nwaneri’s emergence as a key player in the first team, Arsenal fans have reason to be optimistic about their team’s chances in the Champions League this season. The Gunners will be looking to make a deep run in the competition, and with players like Nwaneri in top form, they have every chance of doing so.

  • Linklater, Ethan Hawke’s Blue Moon, More

Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” starring Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley, and Michel Franco’s “Dreams” with Jessica Chastain are slated to compete at the 75th edition of the Berlin Film Festival. This year’s jury will be presided over by “May December” filmmaker Todd Haynes.

“Blue Moon,” which also stars Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott, is a long-gestating project which charts the final days of Lorenz Hart, half of the songwriting team Rodgers & Hart. The film has already been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.

“Dreams” reunites Franco with Chastain following 2023’s “Memory.” The film stars Isaac Hernández as Fernando, a young ballet dancer from Mexico, who dreams of being internationally recognized and living in the U.S. Chastain plays his lover, a socialite and philanthropist.

Other notable titles on the competition roster include “Hot Milk,” the feature debut of acclaimed screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz (“She Said”) starring Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw and Vicky Krieps; and “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” Mary Bronstein’s film starring Rose Byrne, A$AP Rocky and Conan O’Brien.

Two Chinese movies will also make their world debuts at the Berlinale: “Girls on Wire” (“Xiang fei de nv hai”), directed by Vivian Qu, and “Living the Land” (“Sheng xi zhi di”), directed by Huo Meng.

The exciting lineup kicks off the leadership of new artistic director Tricia Tuttle, who took over from Carlo Chatrian and signals an endeavor to boast a competition that brings the festival slightly closer to Cannes. Overall, movies that will compete this year for the Golden and Silver bears are on paper less niche and more crossover than recent Berlinale lineups, but Tuttle, who is a well respected American film journalist and curator, has also kept the edginess and iconoclastic flare that has symbolized the festival since its inception.

In announcing the lineup, Tuttle discussed her wish to broaden the appeal of the festival, as well as keep its political roots. “We cannot and we do not shy away from [politics]. It’s arguably in the DNA of the city and the festival itself,” she said. “But it’s fair to say that the Berlinale is many things and for all festivals and all culture right now, the news agenda can often dominate the discourse. But we really hope that believe that the films that audiences are going to see over the weeks of the festival are going to get people talking about the vibrancy of the art form itself.”

Under Tuttle’s helm, the Berlinale has introduced a new competitive section called Perspectives whose inaugural lineup includes 14 feature film debuts, 12 of which are world premieres.

“Perspectives, our new first fiction feature competition brings together exceptional international filmmakers, spanning the globe from India to Mexico, from Taiwan to Egypt, from the U.S. to Slovenia,” Tuttle said. The films include “Mad Bills to Pay” by Joel Alfonso Vargas and “How to Be Normal and the Oddness of the Other World” by Florian Pochlatko.

Meanwhile, the competition roster spans movies from 26 countries and includes eight films directed or co-directed by female helmers.

“We’re fiercely proud of the films in this year’s competition; they showcase the breadth of cinema and offer fascinating glimpses into different lives and places,” said Tuttle, who previously led the BFI London Film Festival during a fast-growing five-year chapter.

Tuttle described the films selected as “intimate dramas that ask us to understand our human fragilities and strengths; there is gentle comedy but also the sharpest, blackest satire; there are films that pay homage to cinematic greats and ones that use the art form’s fullest canvas.”

“Each of these singular works shows filmmakers at the top of their craft. From these deserving ranks, we look forward to discovering what Todd Haynes’ jury pick as the winners of Berlinale Golden and Silver Bears,” Tuttle continued.

Nine more titles have also been added to the Berlinale Special program, most notably James Mangold’s Oscar contender “A Complete Unknown” starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Bob Dylan. The fest will also host a screening of Peter Wollen’s 1987 film “Friendship’s Death,” starring Tilda Swinton, as part of her Honorary Golden Bear tribute.

Last year, the Berlinale was embroiled in controversy after the directors of award-winning doc “No Other Land” — both Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers — described Israeli’s “apartheid” while on stage, sparking angry responses from German politicians. Tuttle acknowledged that, this year, there have been concerns surrounded freedom of speech and that “lots of filmmakers from Arab countries” had approached the organizers “just to make sure the festival is a space for open dialogue.”

Tuttle added that the matter “had affected the program,” but it’s “not been something that’s kept us from being able to program what we want.”

Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke have long been a dynamic duo in the world of cinema, creating some of the most memorable and innovative films of the past few decades. From their groundbreaking work on “Before Sunrise,” “Before Sunset,” and “Before Midnight” to their more recent collaboration on the critically acclaimed “Boyhood,” these two have consistently pushed the boundaries of storytelling and filmmaking.

One of their lesser-known but equally impressive projects is the 2014 film “Boyhood.” This ambitious and groundbreaking film was shot over the course of 12 years, following the life of a young boy named Mason as he grows up in real-time. The result is a truly unique and immersive viewing experience that captures the passage of time like no other film before it.

But their collaborations go beyond just “Boyhood.” Linklater and Hawke have also worked together on the darkly comedic “Tape,” the philosophical “Waking Life,” and the heartfelt “Fast Food Nation.” Each film showcases their shared love of storytelling and their ability to tackle complex themes with intelligence and nuance.

As they continue to push the boundaries of cinema and challenge the status quo, it’s clear that Linklater and Hawke are a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. Their work together is a testament to the power of collaboration and the magic that can happen when two great minds come together to create something truly special.

  • Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

Ethan Nwaneri will look back fondly on his first two away trips to Brentford.

In September 2022, he became the Premier League’s youngest-ever player at 15 when he replaced Fabio Vieira in added time. Back at the Gtech Community Stadium two and a half years later, he became the third-youngest player ever to start a Premier League game for Arsenal at the age of 17 years and 286 days. Only Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott did it younger.

He took the injured Bukayo Saka’s place on the right wing as Mikel Arteta continued to experiment in the England international’s absence.

“In that position, it wasn’t because of the bug,” the Arsenal manager said in his post-match press conference, referencing the illness that had kept several out of the game. “It was a decision I made because I thought he was the best player to play in that position to start the game. And because there was a story there with his debut here. Making his Premier League debut, sometimes that feeling comes in and you feel it’s the right one and then who knows.”

Although he is a natural midfielder, Nwaneri’s development through Arsenal’s academy has helped his readiness to fill Saka’s shoes on the right. He recently admitted to the Arsenal website that he had been used in defensive midfield at points. The Athletic has also detailed his use not just as an attacking midfielder, but as a winger on both flanks and as a centre-forward for the under-18s and under-21s in the 2022-23 season.

Arteta recently spoke in a press conference about how that could see him develop into a striker in the future. For now, however, the work and talent of Nwaneri saw Arteta trust him to contribute off the right flank. Although most of his football for the first team has come in midfield, Arteta has drip-fed Nwaneri minutes on the right wing going back to last season.

When Arsenal were 6-0 up away to West Ham last February, Nwaneri was the one to replace Saka on the right. He played 13 minutes and constantly combined with Martin Odegaard, who has been a reference point for his growth in recent seasons. In an October interview, academy manager Per Mertesacker said: “In Ethan’s case you see where he will develop and actually transfer his game into those pocket areas, like Martin Odegaard.

“Ethan is an attacking midfielder who can play multiple positions but sometimes to develop his running in behind and defending as a winger (he may play elsewhere) and Mikel will use it to his strength.”

That has proven to be the case. Nwaneri shows different qualities out wide from the ‘pocket play’ when he plays in midfield. The teenager was confident enough to go on the outside of Keane Lewis-Potter to get crosses in off his weaker right foot early on against Brentford.

Nwaneri’s ball retention was then key after the game turned with Bryan Mbeumo’s opener. In a moment that could have contributed to the increasingly frantic nature of the first half, he received the ball with three players around him. A couple of feints later, he flicked the ball through to Jurrien Timber, who found Odegaard. The captain won a foul in midfield and a sense of calm was restored.

Nwaneri was found again in a similar position two minutes later and skipped by a challenge before passing forward to Gabriel Jesus, who equalised in the same possession. Those dribbles are already one of Nwaneri’s standout traits. His nutmeg and drive past Lewis-Potter in the second half may have raised eyebrows to those watching on TV, but moments like that have been part of his game since he was in the academy.

That ability saw him lead the game in progressive carries (five).

A similar run and shot breathed life into the Emirates at 2-2 against Leicester City in September. In these moments, Nwaneri appears to glide with the ball more than running with it.

“It was always there,” Des Ryan, formerly Arsenal’s head of sports medicine and athletic development and now director of sport at Ireland’s University of Galway, tells The Athletic.

“You could see it at the early age groups. It’s a dream for a strength and conditioner/sports scientist because you don’t have to teach a person how to run (with the ball). He had the movement skills. You could develop his strength, so he could exert more force through the ground and condition him, so he could do it repeatedly. They’re the easy ones like with Bukayo and Serge Gnabry too.”

Nwaneri had a part to play in Arsenal’s second and third goals (Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

Importantly, like the academy graduate he was deputising, Nwaneri also played a key part in Arsenal’s second and third goals. His corner in the build-up to Mikel Merino’s goal was delivered perfectly to give Mark Flekken grief in the Brentford goal. This should not come as a surprise. Arsenal’s players and staff have trusted the youngster to take corners when he has been on in place of Saka against Bournemouth (when they were 2-0 down), Liverpool and Nottingham Forest this season.

His crossing from open play helped create Gabriel Martinelli’s goal too. This was not a coincidence. In the team’s pre-match warm-ups, rather than playing the usual intricate passes inside the box, Nwaneri was whipping crosses to Merino at the back post.

Considering all three goals Arsenal scored against Brentford last season were headers, that could have been a deliberate ploy. Neither Merino nor Martinelli’s goals were headers, but both players were beneficiaries of what can happen when crosses are used to ask questions of the opposition.

A lot has happened between Nwaneri’s last outing at the Gtech Community Stadium and this one. Arsenal have grown into serious title contenders, while Nwaneri has had to mature as a young man and professional footballer. Navigating the growth of the club and talented young individuals is not easy, but in Nwaneri’s case, Arteta has not rushed to reward him with his first Premier League start.

“Part of that development is patience,” the Arsenal manager added. “And managing frustration and expectations because you expect that everything is going to go so fast as the previous things did. That’s not the case. Now we’re building him. He’s already played a lot of minutes for us for the age he’s at and he fully deserves that.

Nwaneri had already made 16 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season, starting three games in the Carabao Cup. On the back of his first league start, he has now played 432 minutes of senior football in 2024-25. That has come after a telling 189 minutes across five matches in pre-season.

With a couple of Saka-less months coming on the right flank, Nwaneri has shown he is more than capable of being trusted by Arteta in various in-game contexts. A difference maker against the team with the joint-best home record in the league (Brentford and Liverpool have won 22 points at home this term), Nwaneri’s latest trip to west London was just as beneficial as his first, if not more so.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

With Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, Arsenal fans may be concerned about who will step up to fill the void left by the talented young winger. However, one player who has shown immense growth and potential in recent months is Ethan Nwaneri.

Since making his debut for the Gunners, Nwaneri has impressed with his pace, skill, and work rate. The 18-year-old Nigerian winger has shown great versatility, being able to play on either flank and even in a more central attacking role.

Nwaneri’s development has been rapid, and he has become an integral part of Arsenal’s youth setup. His performances for the U23 team have been consistently impressive, with his ability to take on defenders and create chances for his teammates standing out.

In addition to his attacking prowess, Nwaneri has also shown a willingness to track back and help out defensively. His work rate and commitment to the team’s cause have not gone unnoticed by his coaches and teammates.

With Saka out of action, Nwaneri has a golden opportunity to prove himself at the senior level. His potential is undeniable, and if given the chance, he could be the player to step up and make a name for himself in the absence of the star winger.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri to deliver when called upon, and his development since his debut is a testament to his dedication and talent. Gunners fans should keep an eye on this exciting young talent as he looks to make his mark in the first team.

Impossible – The Final Reckoning to shake up the franchise by introducing a young Ethan Hunt?

Rumor: Tom Cruise is looking for an unknown to play a young Ethan Hunt in the next two Mission: Impossible movies

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning had the highest budget of any film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, somewhere in the range of $290 million… but the box office numbers took a dip, the film ending up with a haul of $566 million at the worldwide box office. A lower amount than Ghost Protocol ($694 million), Rogue Nation ($688 million), and Fallout ($786 million) had earned. And they all had substantially lower budgets. With the next film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to reach theatres on May 23, 2025, the folks working behind-the-scenes might have an idea that the franchise needs to be shaken up a bit. According to a RUMOR shared by The Sun, they’re going to attempt to do this by pulling a younger version of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character into the action.

The Sun’s inside source informed them, “Tom is keen to give Mission: Impossible a fresh take in the next two films and wants to explore a bit of Ethan’s past. They’re going to start looking for a young star to take on the role and they will appear a bit in (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) and then more in the ninth film. It’s very important to Tom that they get the right person. They are seeking a youngster who is completely fresh on the scene and will cause a real stir. It’s a huge role but the hunt is on to see if they can find a young Tom Cruise. The scenes will show Ethan in his early life and explore the things that happened to him before he went on to start working as a spy. It is something they’ve not done before with Mission: Impossible and so Tom thinks it could be a really interesting tangent for fans.” It’s not surprising to hear that The Final Reckoning will include flashbacks to Ethan’s younger days, as Dead Reckoning was already dropping hints about his back story, but it is surprising to hear that a young Ethan might play a bigger role in the next sequel down the line.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning tells the second half of the story that began in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, with Ethan Hunt out to destroy an AI system called The Entity, which is housed in a sunken Russian stealth submarine.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue NationMission: Impossible – Fallout, and Dead Reckoning writer/director Christopher McQuarrie remains at the helm, working from a screenplay he crafted with Erik Jendresen.

Cruise is being joined in the cast by Hayley Atwell, reprising her Dead Reckoning role of thief-turned-IMF-recruit Grace; Vanessa Kirby as arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis, a.k.a. the White Widow, a character who was previously seen in both Fallout and Dead Reckoning; Ving Rhames as IMF agent Luther Stickell, who has been part of this franchise since the first Mission: Impossible movie in 1996; Simon Pegg as IMF agent Benji Dunn, who joined the party back in Mission: Impossible III; Henry Czerny as CIA director Eugene Kittridge, who was introduced in Mission: Impossible (1996) and finally made his long-awaited return in Dead Reckoning; Rolf Saxon as William Donloe, a CIA analyst who got in trouble after Ethan Hunt accessed his computer way back in the first Mission: Impossible; and more Dead Reckoning reprisals: Esai Morales as the Entity-serving terrorist Gabriel; Pom Klementieff as Gabriel’s former ally Paris; Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as US Intelligence agents Briggs and Degas; Mariela Garriga as Marie, a mysterious woman from Ethan and Gabriel’s past; Mark Gatiss and Charles Parnell as the heads of the NSA and NRO;. There are also a handful of new additions to the franchise: Holt McCallany as Secretary of Defense Bernstein; Nick Offerman as Sydney, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Katy O’Brian, Stephen Oyoung, Tramell Tillman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk in unspecified roles.

What do you think of the idea that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning could establish a young Ethan Hunt that would have a bigger role in Mission: Impossible 9? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Ethan Nwaneri: A teen living the Arsenal dream | Feature | News

How difficult is it for you to remain level-headed when there is such excitement surrounding you from our supporters?

I just know and I see where I want to be, and where I’m going to be, and I focus on that. Nobody has really seen anything from me yet, just a small snippet of what’s to come, so I’ve got a much bigger picture in my mind that I want to work towards.

Tell us a bit about your Arsenal journey so far.

I joined the academy when I was eight, but I was in the pre-academy before that, so I’ve been here all my life basically. I’ve always been a midfielder – I haven’t really changed position much. Around under-14s and under-15s I played as a striker a bit more, and that was good for my development because I really improved my finishing then.

I played a bit as a defensive midfielder too in my under-16 season, and right wing, left wing, too. That all added a lot to my game. But I’d say attacking midfield is my best position, and where I would like to be long-term.

Which coaches have been important for you in your career so far?

I’ve had loads through my time here. Dan Micciche, Adam Birchall, Jack Wilshere, Mehmet Ali, Max Porter – I’ve had so many, and also those when I was really young.

My dad, Obi, coaches me and my brother, Emerson, who’s 14 and at Hale End. I’d say my dad is my main coach, my main critic and my main support. Over the years he’s always taken me and my brother to do extra work in our local park in Islington, to help with finishing, working on our touch or whatever. We live local to Emirates Stadium so it’s great that we’ve done that.

Tell us about your brother Emerson…

He’s a midfielder but he can play right back as well. He’s in the under-15s this year. We’re really close, but I wouldn’t say we are that similar. He’s probably more outgoing than me – he’s the loud one! There are three years between us so it would be really cool if we could both play in the Arsenal first-team together one day. We’ve spoken about that a bit and what that would be like, it’s something to aim for.

Ethan Nwaneri: A teen living the Arsenal dream

At just 16 years old, Ethan Nwaneri is already making waves in the world of football. Hailing from London, this talented teenager has always had a passion for the game and a dream of playing for his favorite team, Arsenal.

Growing up, Ethan idolized Arsenal legends like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, and spent countless hours practicing his skills on the pitch. His hard work and dedication paid off when he was scouted by Arsenal’s youth academy at the age of 12. Since then, Ethan has been honing his skills under the guidance of some of the best coaches in the business.

Today, Ethan is a rising star in Arsenal’s youth team, impressing coaches and fans alike with his speed, agility, and technical ability. Despite his young age, he has already caught the attention of scouts from top clubs around Europe, who are keeping a close eye on his progress.

But for Ethan, playing for Arsenal is more than just a dream come true – it’s a chance to inspire other young footballers from his community. He hopes to show them that with hard work, determination, and a love for the game, anything is possible.

As he continues to pursue his passion for football, Ethan remains humble and focused, always striving to improve and reach new heights. With his talent and dedication, there’s no doubt that this young star has a bright future ahead of him. Arsenal fans, keep an eye out for Ethan Nwaneri – he’s a name you won’t soon forget.

Generative AI for Beginners by Ethan James Whitfield

Are you interested in learning about generative artificial intelligence (AI) but don’t know where to start? Look no further! In this post, I will break down the basics of generative AI for beginners.

Generative AI is a type of AI that is trained to generate new content, such as images, music, or text, based on patterns and data it has been exposed to. This can be done through various techniques, including neural networks and deep learning algorithms.

One popular application of generative AI is in the creation of deepfake videos, where AI can create realistic-looking videos of people saying or doing things they never actually did. While this technology has raised ethical concerns, it also showcases the power and potential of generative AI.

To get started with generative AI, beginners should first familiarize themselves with basic programming languages like Python and learn about machine learning concepts. From there, they can delve into more advanced topics like neural networks and deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.

By gaining a solid understanding of these foundational concepts, beginners can begin experimenting with generative AI models and creating their own unique content.

So, if you’re ready to dive into the world of generative AI, keep an eye out for more posts from me, Ethan James Whitfield, as I continue to explore this fascinating field and share tips and tricks for beginners. Let’s unleash the creative potential of AI together!
