  • Multiple events have thousands of hockey players playing outdoors


    Both Hockey Day Minnesota – Shakopee and the U.S. Pond Hockey Championship will have players outdoors this week.

    SHAKOPEE, Minn. — Many things come to mind when you think of Minnesota, and many sounds that might jump out as well. The sound of water from all our lakes and ponds, the call of a loon, and in the parking lot at Valleyfair in Shakopee – the sound of hockey pucks hitting the crossbar.

    “We’ve spent about four years getting ready for these four days,” Erik Radtke, board vice chair for Hockey Day Minnesota Shakopee, said.

    Through Saturday, 11 high schools games, 24 youth games and even the Gophers hockey team will play on that outdoor rink.

    “When I said that we broke a hockey puck in half on the hockey rink in the middle of Valleyfair’s parking lot, that might be the most Minnesota sentence ever uttered,” Radtke said, laughing.

    Of course, they braved the bitterly cold temperatures at the beginning of this week, but they’re now finding a happy medium as temperatures warm just a bit. For players like Sidney Cashmark of Prior Lake, the chance to play outside close to home couldn’t be beat.

    “I just grew really close to everybody, and it’s like family to me,” she said.

    This is the 19th year of Hockey Day Minnesota, which rotates location every year – this year, ending up in Shakopee at Valleyfair.

    “When’s the last time you’re gonna be able to lace up skates, stand on a beautiful sheet of ice, and take a selfie with a roller coaster in the background?” Radtke said.

    Of course, the “State of Hockey” wouldn’t be an apt nickname if we didn’t have multiple hockey events happening this week. Over on Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships started with youth night on Wednesday.

    This is the 20-year mark for that event, led by Jody Delorit.

    “Over all of these years, I’ve become friends with a lot of the players that come from around the country and around the globe,” she said. “So, for me, it’s also like a reunion now!”

    Teams will descend on Minneapolis from all over the globe, with ages ranging from kids to 50+.

    “If you’re wondering what it’s really all about, why do they always say community, community, community, come down and feel it here!” Delorit said.

    The Tribune organised the Tricity’s first-ever inter-school newspaper reading competition aimed at cultivating a love

    for reading and awareness of current events among students. This was a perfect opportunity for the students to showcase their confidence, clarity and articulation.
