  • Premier League Predictions, odds and best bets: Can Bournemouth stop Liverpool? Everton vulnerable against Leicester | Football News

Our betting expert Jones Knows provides his insight as he looks forward to the Saturday card in the Premier League – can Bournemouth stop Liverpool?

Nottingham Forest vs Brighton, Saturday 12.30pm

Nottingham Forest’s style of play means they soak up pressure and therefore concede a high amount of corners, especially for a team that are challenging for a top-four finish. They are conceding 6.3 corners per game in the Premier League, a figure that Brighton should be capable of hitting at the City Ground based on the likely direction of travel of the game.

Forest will sit deep, looking to hit on the counter while Brighton will be the team dominating the ball, sustaining attacks and getting into corner-winning situations.

The Seagulls won the corner race 9-1 in the corresponding fixture that ended 2-2 and a similar type of game could be on the cards despite Forest having home advantage. Brighton to win six or more corners looks too big at 5/4 with Sky Bet.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-2 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Brighton to win 6+ corners (5/4 with Sky Bet)

Bournemouth vs Liverpool, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6 HERE!

This should be great fun. Bournemouth are running hot.

In their last four games, Andoni Iraola’s men are working at a 19.7 per cent conversion rate with their finishing, which is a bonkers number and a huge increase on their 9.2 per cent conversion rate over the course of this season.

In the last four games they’ve scored a goal every 5.8 shots and again that is a huge upsurge on their season average where they’ve scored every 10.8 shots per goal.

This is an unsustainable figure unless Dango Ouattara is the next Erling Haaland.

I think they might slip back to their wayward finishing ways here against one of the best defences in the Premier League.

Some may deem the Cherries as dangerous outsiders but Liverpool, fresh and ready to go after being given a rest in midweek, are such a relentless winning machine. Away win.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 1-3

Everton vs Leicester, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6 HERE!

Leicester look a great bet here at Evens with Sky Bet to get a result based on the injuries to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oriel Mangala.

The Everton striker, who has a significant hamstring injury, has missed 15 games since the start of last season and Everton have only won three of them and scored just 10 goals.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

FREE TO WATCH: Highlights from Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Leicester City in the Premier League.

Also, their numbers this season without Mangala would worry me based on their win price at odds-on. He has missed eight games this season and they have conceded 2.3 goals per game which is very un-Everton-like.

It would be wrong to get carried away with Leicester but they did play very well in forward areas at Tottenham, moving the ball into some dangerous positions even before they got their two goals. It wasn’t the first time they have caused teams problems under Ruud van Nistelrooy – they scored at Anfield, created enough to win the game vs Man City and were the better team in their home defeat to Crystal Palace.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-2 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Leicester double chance (Evens with Sky Bet)

    Ipswich vs Southampton, Saturday 3pm

This could be season defining for Ipswich. It’s a big one.

They’ve disappointed me of late, offering zilch in terms of resistance against Manchester City, who are of course vulnerable, and Liverpool. The 10 goals conceded isn’t going to help their confidence in the defensive process so Kieran McKenna has a big job on his hands to get the balance right at both ends of the pitch with expectation on them in the market to land maximum points. They are 19/20 with Sky Bet – a price I can certainly leave alone.

The equation could be simple for Ipswich, if Liam Delap plays well, Ipswich win.

He’s bound to give Jan Bednarek a busy afternoon and a foul frenzy between the pair may play out. Delap is drawing 1.93 fouls per game at home this season and Bednarek, a very aggressive defender, has made at least a foul in his last nine starts, totalling 16 fouls. He is 5/4 with Sky Bet to make two or more.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 2-2

Fulham are a team I’m always drawn to but rarely make me any money.

They are such a well-drilled, well-coached outfit under Marco Silva with an excellent process when it comes to their underlying numbers but they find ways not to win matches. It’s down to their lack of finishers in the final third – as seen by Rodrigo Muniz in the defeat to Manchester United.

Newcastle are almost exactly the opposite with the main man Alexander Isak leading their line. It’s 18 goals in his last 18 starts across all competitions for him.

So, even though my instincts are telling me to get with Fulham here the likelihood is they’ll play well, do many things right in the game, but Newcastle will come out on top due to their better individual quality across the pitch.

    SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1

Wolves vs Aston Villa, Saturday 5.30pm, live on Sky Sports – PLAY SUPER 6 HERE!

    Wolves vs Aston Villa

This is an underrated derby and one that is becoming more intense by the season.

Since the start of the 19/20 season, this fixture is the second dirtiest when it comes to yellow cards of any Premier League fixture to have been played more than five times, producing 60 yellow cards in 11 matches.

This latest battle between West Midlands’ finest is expected to deliver on the cards front as there is so much on the line for Wolves, whose bounce under Vitor Pereira has fallen flat with four straight defeats in the Premier League.

In the last four meetings between these two there have been 75 bookings points shown per game with every game landing for those backing the 50+ booking point line with Sky Bet, who are offering up 5/6 for it to land again. It’s a high line but it’s hard to resist based on the evidence.

And I think Wolves need to take this game down a scrappy path and try and overpower Villa, who surely will be feeling the effects of their rigorous schedule at various points in this match.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: 50+ booking points (5/6 with Sky Bet)

The Premier League is back in action this weekend with some exciting matches on the cards. Can Bournemouth stop Liverpool’s unbeaten run? Will Everton be able to hold off Leicester’s strong attack? Here are our predictions, odds and best bets for this weekend’s matches.

    Bournemouth vs Liverpool:

Liverpool are currently sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table with a 10-point lead. Bournemouth, on the other hand, are struggling in 16th place and have only won one of their last five matches. Despite their poor form, Bournemouth have been known to cause upsets against top teams at home. However, Liverpool’s attack led by Salah, Mane and Firmino is too strong to be stopped. Our prediction: Liverpool to win.

    Odds: Bournemouth – 6.50, Draw – 4.50, Liverpool – 1.44

Best bet: Liverpool to win and both teams to score at odds of 2.75

    Everton vs Leicester:

Everton have been inconsistent this season and are currently in 14th place. Leicester, on the other hand, have been in great form and are sitting pretty in second place. Everton have struggled defensively and Leicester’s attack led by Vardy and Maddison will likely take advantage of that. Our prediction: Leicester to win.

    Odds: Everton – 3.10, Draw – 3.40, Leicester – 2.30

Best bet: Leicester to win and over 2.5 goals at odds of 3.00

These are just our predictions and best bets for this weekend’s matches. Make sure to do your own research and bet responsibly. Good luck!

  • Everton vs Leicester: Starting Lineups & How to Watch | Garner, Beto start

Everton – With Calvert-Lewin and Mangala out, Moyes has gone for direct replacements with Beto and Garner starting.

Leicester City – van Nistelrooy has Vardy starting, of course.

With two consecutive wins Everton have started moving away from the drop zone, but this weekend poses a more direct challenge. Leicester City broke their own seven-game losing streak with a win last weekend and are sitting six points behind the Blues having played a game more.

A win over the Foxes will increase that gap to nine points and add a definitive exclamation mark to the Toffees’ resuscitation under David Moyes.

The Blues last game against the Foxes was earlier in the season at the King Power where they were lucky to come away with a point thanks to Iliman Ndiaye. Leicester’s last game at Goodison was back in 2022-23 season when they got relegated, but not before picking up three points off the Blues with a 2-0 win in November 2022.

Everton will face Leicester City in a crucial Premier League match at Goodison Park. Both teams are looking to secure a European spot for next season, so this game is crucial for their ambitions.

Here are the starting lineups for both teams:

Everton: Pickford, Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Digne, Allan, Doucoure, Iwobi, Rodriguez, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin

Leicester City: Schmeichel, Castagne, Fofana, Soyuncu, Thomas, Ndidi, Tielemans, Perez, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy

Two exciting young talents will also start for Everton, with James Garner and Joao Virginia getting the nod in midfield and goal respectively.

If you want to watch the match, it will be broadcast live on NBCSN in the US and BT Sport in the UK. Kickoff is at 3:00 PM GMT.

Everton will look to pull themselves further clear of relegation danger on Saturday as the Merseysiders host fellow strugglers Leicester.

David Moyes has made a promising start to his second stint as Everton manager, with two wins from his first three games since returning to the Goodison Park hot seat. The Toffees come into this weekend’s fixtures seven points clear of the drop zone, but today come up against a Leicester side that have also given their survival hopes a boost.

Things had been looking ominous for the Foxes after a run of seven consecutive EPL defeats, however last weekend’s comeback victory away at Spurs suggested that Ruud van Nistlerooy’s side may have enough fight in them to beat the drop.

Everton take on Leicester City on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Goodison Park, with kickoff set for 3 p.m. GMT local time. That makes it a 10 a.m. ET or 7 a.m. PT start in the US and Canada, and an 2 a.m. AEDT kickoff in Australia in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the match as it happens, wherever you are in the world.

Saturday’s Ipswich vs. Southampton match will be streaming on Peacock. You’ll need a Peacock Premium or Premium Plus account to catch the game live.

How to watch the Premier League 2024-25 season from anywhere with a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view EPL matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the games — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN, and it works on a variety of devices. It’s normally $13 a month, but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100 you’ll get three months free and save 49%. That’s the equivalent of $6.67 a month.

Can I livestream Ipswich vs. Southampton in the UK?

No broadcaster has the rights to show this game live in the UK, due to the traditional Saturday 3 p.m. kickoff blackout, which prohibits matches from being shown in the region at that time to protect attendances throughout the English football pyramid.

That also means that if you’re in the UK traveling for pleasure or for work, you’re unlikely to be able to watch the game like you normally would at home, thanks to geoblocking.

There’s one option to get around this. By using a VPN, as explained above, you can set your location to a country where the match is being broadcast and go from there.

Livestream Ipswich vs. Southampton in Canada

If you want to stream this EPL game live in Canada, you’ll need to subscribe to Fubo Canada. The service has exclusive rights to every Premier League fixture once again this season.

    Fubo

Fubo is the go-to destination for Canadians looking to watch the EPL this season, with exclusive streaming rights to every match. It costs CA$30 a month, though you can save some cash by paying quarterly or annually.

Livestream Ipswich vs. Southampton in Australia

Football fans down under can watch EPL matches live on streaming service Optus Sport, which is showing every single Premier League fixture of the 2024-25 season live in Australia.

    Optus

With exclusive rights to stream all EPL matches live this season, as well as German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga games, streaming service Optus Sport is a particularly big draw for Aussie soccer fans.

If you’re already an Optus network customer, you can bag Optus Sport for a reduced price, with discounts bringing the price down to as low as AU$7 a month. If you’re not, a standalone monthly subscription to the service starts at AU$25.

Quick tips for streaming the Premier League using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming EPL matches may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

  • Everton lost their last home league match against Leicester 2-0 in November 2022 – they’ve never lost back-to-back league meetings with the Foxes at Goodison Park.

  • Leicester have won just one of their last eight Premier League meetings with Everton (D4 L3), though it was their last away match against them in November 2022.

  • 17 of the 35 Premier League meetings between Leicester and Everton have been drawn, the highest percentage for any fixture to have been played 30+ times in the competition (49%).

  • Following wins against Tottenham and Brighton, Everton will be looking to win three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2024.

  • Leicester beat Tottenham 2-1 in their last Premier League game. They’ve not won consecutive away matches in the top-flight since October/November 2022 (a run of three) which included a 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

  • Only Liverpool and Nottingham Forest (9 each) have kept more Premier League clean sheets this season than Everton (8). However, the Toffees have also failed to score in more games than any other side this term (12), ranking 19th for goals (19), xG (22.3), shot conversion rate (7.9%) and shots on target (73).

  • Everton have the oldest average starting XI in the Premier League this season (29 years, 13 days) and have awarded 9,702 minutes to players aged 30+, the most of any side.

  • All five of Iliman Ndiaye’s Premier League goals for Everton this season have been scored in the first half of games (his first coming in the reverse fixture against Leicester in September) with the Toffees avoiding defeat in all five matches when he’s found the back of the net (W3 D2). Meanwhile, only West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus (57) has completed more dribbles than the Everton winger this term (54).

  • Three of the five players with most shots and chances created combined without registering a goal or assist in the Premier League this season are Everton players – Jesper Lindstrom (25 shots, 16 chances, 1st), Jack Harrison (15 shots, 14 chances, 4th) and Abdoulaye Doucouré (11 shots, 17 chances, 5th).

  • Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has had a hand in eight goals across his 12 Premier League starts against Everton (7 goals, 1 assist). He could become just the fourth player in the competition’s history to score in consecutive appearances while aged 38 or older after Teddy Sheringham, Ryan Giggs and Graham Alexander.

Everton will face off against Leicester City in a highly anticipated Premier League clash this weekend. Both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win as they aim to climb up the table and solidify their positions in the top half.

Team news:

Everton will be without their star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury. However, they will be boosted by the return of Allan, who has recovered from a hamstring injury of his own. James Rodriguez is also expected to be fit for the match.

Leicester City, on the other hand, will be without their top scorer Jamie Vardy, who is sidelined with a calf injury. James Maddison is also a doubt for the game, while Wesley Fofana and Timothy Castagne remain long-term absentees.

Stats:

– Everton are currently in 7th place in the Premier League table, while Leicester City are in 3rd place.
– Everton have scored 34 goals in 24 league games, while Leicester City have scored 40 goals in 24 games.
– Everton have conceded 30 goals, while Leicester City have conceded 31 goals.
– Everton have won 11 games, drawn 4, and lost 9, while Leicester City have won 13 games, drawn 5, and lost 6.

Head-to-head:

In their last 10 meetings, Everton have won 4 games, Leicester City have won 4 games, and 2 games have ended in draws. Their last encounter ended in a 2-0 win for Leicester City.

This promises to be an exciting and closely contested match between two top Premier League sides. Both teams will be looking to secure all three points and boost their chances of finishing the season strongly. Make sure to tune in and catch all the action live.

  • Premier League LIVE: Six games including Nottingham Forest v Brighton, Everton v Leicester City, Bournemouth v Liverpool, Newcastle United v Fulham – radio commentary, live text and score updates

  • Nottingham Forest are winless in their last three Premier League meetings with Brighton (D1 L2), having been unbeaten in their previous eight top-flight matches against the Seagulls (W6 D2).

  • Brighton won this exact fixture 3-2 last season – they’ve never before won consecutive away league games against Nottingham Forest.

  • Nottingham Forest’s eight game unbeaten run came to an end last time out at Bournemouth, conceding more goals in that defeat (5) as they did in their previous seven Premier League games combined (4). Only once previously this season have they lost consecutive league matches, doing so in November against Newcastle and Arsenal.

  • Brighton’s six game unbeaten run was ended last time out at home to Everton. The Seagulls have won just two of their last 11 Premier League games (D6 L3) and could lose consecutive matches for the first time since ending last season with back-to-back defeats.

  • Nottingham Forest have won six of their last eight Premier League home games (D1 L1), with five of those six victories coming by a one goal margin. This is just the second time they are kicking off at 12:30 on a Saturday since their return to the Premier League, beating Liverpool 1-0 at the City Ground in October 2022 in their only previous game.

  • Brighton have scored the opening goal in 10 of their 12 Premier League away games this season (including in each of their last five), more than any other side. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have gone 1-0 up in 18 of their 23 league games overall this term, the most in the division.

  • Only Erling Haaland (17), Alexander Isak (16) and Mohamed Salah (14) have scored more non penalty goals in the Premier League this season than Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood (12). Wood has scored more goals against Brighton (9) than he has against any other side in his English league career.

  • Brighton’s João Pedro has six goal involvements in his last eight away appearances in the Premier League (2 goals, 4 assists), also netting a brace at the City Ground back in November 2023.

  • The average distance of Nottingham Forest’s goal kicks in the Premier League this season has been 43.7 metres, the highest of any side, while 121 of those have ended in the attacking half, 26 more than any other team. By contrast, only three sides have taken goal kicks at a shorter average distance than Brighton this campaign (23.4 metres).

  • Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina has taken 35 throw-ins that have ended in the opposition’s penalty area in the Premier League this season, seven more than any other player. In total, Forest have taken 56 throws that end in the opposition box, with only Brentford doing so more often (60).

  • Preview: Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Everton – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday’s Premier League clash between Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two sides who enjoyed impressive Premier League victories last weekend meet at the Amex on Saturday, when Brighton & Hove Albion play host to Everton.

Both clubs have been guilty of not winning enough games this season, but they took a huge step in the right direction with their performances last Sunday.

    Match preview

Being away from the Amex over the past few weeks has helped Brighton get their season back on track, when it was starting to show signs of fading into mediocrity.

After an eight-game winless run in the Premier League, Brighton have since earned back-to-back victories, both coming on the road.

Beating Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road ended that barren run, before Fabian Hurzeler‘s men went to Old Trafford and swept an out-of-sorts Manchester United aside in a 3-1 success.

That was the third year running Brighton have won at Old Trafford, and they have done so under three different managers, with Hurzeler joining Roberto De Zerbi and Graham Potter in earning the Seagulls three points at the Theatre of Dreams.

The impact of their 4-0 win away to Norwich City in the FA Cup should not be underestimated either, because that allowed the likes of Georginio Rutter and Yankuba Minteh to return to form, and they both scored in the Man United win.

Brighton now sit ninth and are well in the hunt for European qualification again, lying only three points off the top seven, and six off the top four.

This weekend provides the hosts with the opportunity to win three straight Premier League games for the first time in almost 18 months, but finding the winning spark at the Amex will be required, given that they have only taken maximum points three times in 10 games here this season.

However, they will enter this fixture knowing they have already enjoyed a big win over upcoming opponents Everton this season, leaving Goodison Park with a 3-0 victory on the opening day.

Brighton have never before completed a league double over Everton in 11 previous seasons, and David Moyes‘s task will be to ensure that continues, and the Toffees have a good recent record at the Amex.

After not winning on any of their first four Premier League visits here, Everton have now won two of the last three, and they should have taken three points here last season too, inexplicably throwing two points away in injury time against a 10-man Brighton.

The Everton faithful will hope that Moyes can change the tune regarding their away form though, where they have just one goal in six games, and signs that times are changing were present last weekend, when the Toffees were dominant in their win over Tottenham Hotspur.

While the final score read 3-2, that was extremely flattering for a Spurs side that could have had no complaints if they were 6-0 down before pulling a goal back.

It was Everton’s first win since early December, moving them four points clear of the drop zone, and it also saw them claim a victory in the month of January for the first time in four years.

A blistering first-half performance also saw the Toffees score three goals in the opening 45 minutes at Goodison for the first time since April 2017, and they also scored two open-play goals in a single game for the first time in nine months.

Faltering in the second-half is nothing new though, and that is something Moyes must rectify, because no team has scored as few goals (seven) or conceded a higher proportion of goals (68%) after the interval than Everton.

A Premier League table taking into account only goals in the second half of matches would see Everton sit bottom of the table, so maintaining performance levels for longer than 45 minutes will be a priority.

    Team News

Brighton & Hove Albion's Evan Ferguson in action on December 15, 2024© Imago

Brighton are close to welcoming back numerous first-team players from injury, with Evan Ferguson, Mats Wieffer, Brajan Gruda and Jack Hinshelwood all back in training.

Hurzeler has been struck down with further injuries this week though, with Lewis Dunk and Matt O’Riley set to miss out, and the absence of the captain means Brighton will have just two fit central defenders here.

Out for the long term, Igor will not be seen again this season, while Ferdi Kadioglu and James Milner will not be back until next month.

Kaoru Mitoma has a fine record against Everton, scoring on two of his last three visits to Goodison, and notching another here at the Amex will see him become the first Japanese player to find the net in three straight Premier League games.

There will be little reason for Moyes to make any changes to his Everton team after their win last weekend, with the players who came into the side impressing.

Jesper Lindstrom caught the eye, having his best game in an Everton shirt to date, while summer signing Jake O’Brien got his first league start at right-back, doing nothing wrong despite playing slightly out of position.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin ended his 16-game scoring drought, solidifying his place in the starting XI, and finding some form in front of goal will be crucial, with Armando Broja out injured and Beto seemingly not in Moyes’s plans.

Everton will hope to welcome Dwight McNeil back from injury before the month is out, while James Garner has also been in full training, but is being eased back into the fold for the time being.

Brighton & Hove Albion possible starting lineup:
Verbruggen; Veltman, Webster, Van Hecke, Estupinan; Baleba, Ayari; Minteh, Joao Pedro, Mitoma; Welbeck

    Everton possible starting lineup:
Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Lindstrom, Gueye, Mangala, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin

    SM words green background

We say: Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Everton

The stats suggest this will be a difficult afternoon for Everton, who have won just one of their last 21 away Premier League games, and Moyes has only ever enjoyed one win over the Seagulls in 10 previous meetings.

Brighton are back in form and full of confidence, scoring goals at will and collecting maximum points, and they will be favourites to do so again this weekend.

Brighton & Hove Albion will face off against Everton in an exciting Premier League match this weekend. Both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win as they continue their quest for a successful season.

    Prediction:
This match is expected to be a closely contested affair, with both teams having shown good form in recent weeks. Brighton will be looking to capitalize on their home advantage, while Everton will be aiming to secure an important away victory. I predict a 2-1 win for Brighton in a thrilling encounter.

    Team News:
Brighton will be without the services of midfielder Adam Lallana, who is sidelined with a thigh injury. Tariq Lamptey is also a doubt for the match due to a hamstring problem. However, Graham Potter will have a nearly full squad to choose from for this crucial fixture.

On the other hand, Everton will be without the services of midfielder Allan, who is out with a hamstring injury. Jean-Philippe Gbamin is also a doubt for the match due to a calf problem. Nonetheless, Rafa Benitez will have a strong squad at his disposal for this important clash.

    Lineups:
Brighton & Hove Albion: Sanchez, Veltman, Dunk, Webster, Cucurella, Bissouma, Moder, March, Gross, Maupay, Trossard

  • Everton at Brighton: Opposition Analysis | Nothing to Fear, Everything To Play For

The David Moyes 2.0 era achieved liftoff last weekend, with the team’s exciting 3-2 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur. There’d been a last-minute abortive launch during the previous game, in which Everton had shown some positive signs of improvement under their new (old) boss, but fallen short at Goodison Park, losing to Aston Villa. However, there was nothing wrong with the team’s booster rockets last time out.

The admittedly depleted visitors were blown away by the Blues, in the kind of first half performance rarely seen at the Old Lady in recent years. The great old stadium’s final season was treated to a game worthy of its history and reputation, and hopefully there will be at least a couple much such days to come before it reaches the end.

It’s a change of scenery for the Toffees today, however, as they make the long trip south to the Amex, where they’ll take on ninth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

    Form

The Seagulls found their first-ever foray into European football demanding last term, ending up finishing eleventh — dropping 14 points from their previous campaign. The team’s depth was sorely put to the test by a push to the last 16 of the Europa League and it was found a little wanting. Ambitious manager Roberto De Zerbi had cut an unhappy figure during the second half of the season and departed for pastures new in the summer, to be replaced by the shockingly-young (to me, anyway) Fabian Hürzeler. If Brighton had banked significant funds during the previous campaign, with sales of major players, then they blew it like a Vegas high roller last summer, with a net transfer spend of more than €190m.

Of the newcomers, fullback Ferdi KadıoÄŸlu (€30m, Fenerbahce) made the most early impact, before suffering a toe injury which will keep him out of today’s match. Another major signing, midfielder Mats Wieffer (€32m, Feyenoord) also misses out. Winger Brajan Gruda (€31.5m, Mainz 05) has passed a fitness test, though fellow recruit, midfielder Matt O’Riley (€29.5m, Celtic) is a doubt. Two others – striker Georginio Rutter (€46.7m) and former Blues target Yankuba Minteh (€35m, Newcastle United) – have been used mostly from the bench, though both scored last weekend.

The new boss got off to a great start in England, losing just one of his opening nine Premier League fixtures, after blowing away the Toffees 3-0 at Goodison to kick off the campaign. The young German picked up some notable scalps, beating Manchester United, Spurs and the Magpies during this impressive run, with the lone loss coming to Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge. A creditable away defeat to Liverpool followed, but the Seagulls rebounded with back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Bournemouth, before they entered a slump: eight games without a win — albeit with only two defeats.

The South Coast outfit has found its form of late, however, taking maximum points from the last two outings. A routine 2-0 win over Ipswich Town was followed up with a clinical dispatching of a woeful United side, 3-1 at Old Trafford, last weekend.

    Style of Play

Hürzeler is quite flexible in the manner in which he sets up, though he almost always works from out of a basic back four framework. The young American-born coach has his own ideas as to how he wants to play, but he’s also in the formative stages of what figures to be a long managerial career and is happy to adapt. He’s varied the formation throughout the campaign, starting off with a 4-2-3-1, moving to a 4-4-2 and back again, and for the last two games – both victories – he’s used a 4-1-4-1 and 4-4-2, respectively. It should be noted that both of those matches were on the road, however and Brighton have deployed the 4-2-3-1 in each of their last three at the Amex.

One of the German’s core concepts is a desire to play through the opposition press. He’ll instruct players to move to facilitate this, with fullbacks inverting on occasion and midfielders and even forwards dropping back in order to create overloads, in order to create passing opportunities. This is clearly drilled in training and accordingly Brighton are one of the most press-resistant teams in the league.

What they are not, however is a possession side: they command a 52.3% share of the ball (eighth ranked), way down from 60.2% under De Zerbi. Their pass completion percentage is also down — 85.3%, compared to 89% last term. Most of their passing is short (only 8.8% long), but they will go direct when required, particularly on the road. They are well-balanced in attack, but favour the left.

Brighton have scored 35 times this season, considerably exceeding their xG statistic of 30.7. They take 14.1 shots per 90 minutes (ranking joint sixth), but they lead the division in attempts from central areas (74%), which may explain their overperformance. Nothing stands out as a particular focus, when it comes to the situations they are scoring from: not set-pieces, general play, or counterattacks.

Defensively, the Seagulls only permit 11.6 shots per 90 (ranking seventh). They rank highly on the number of crosses blocked and fouls committed, which is characteristic of a pressing team. They’ve conceded 30 times, slightly better than their xGA of 32.2 and defend set-plays well, but have been caught on the counter four times.

    Player Assessment

Kaoru Mitoma is one of the hosts’ main threats. He’s enjoying a return to form after an injury-blighted prior campaign and has eight goal contributions this term from his left wing berth. He bagged a goal and an assist against United last week and will need to be watched carefully. The Japan international is adept at carrying the ball into the penalty area (2.21 times per 90) and dribbling (4.46 attempts, with a 42.5% success rate) and is ahead of all regulars in the side with 3.59 SCA (Shot-Creating Actions) per 90.

Manchester United FC v Brighton & Hove Albion FC - Premier League

With normal incumbent Gruda a doubt, Minteh – who scored a goal and provided an assist in a rare start last weekend – may retain his place on the right flank. The pacy Gambian is a danger with the ball at his feet. He’s attempted 5.8 dribbles per game (42.6% success rate) and carries the ball into the opposition area a team-high 3.58 times per 90.

Carlos Baleba will partner fellow 21-year-old Yasin Ayari in midfield. The Colombian leads the team in combined tackles and interceptions (4.65) and ball recoveries (6.79) per 90. An intelligent player whose pass completion percentage of 87.9 leads all non-defenders at Brighton, Baleba is yet another fantastic midfield find by Brighton’s recruitment people and already worth considerably more than the €27m the club paid for him less than 18 months ago.

    Solution

Although Brighton are considered by many to be a major success story in recent years – which they are – and Everton a basket-case over the same period (also true), it’s worth noting that the Toffees haven’t actually lost any of their last four visits to the Amex. In fact, we have to go all the way back to October 2019, when Graham Potter was Seagulls boss and Marco Silva in the away dugout for that last victory by the home side: 3-2, courtesy of a Lucas Digne own goal in the 94th minute, so the idea that the Blues are right up against it here is not supported by history. The Merseysiders can travel down to the South Coast with every expectation of being able to get a positive result.

In terms of form, both have recently emerged from a winless slump. Everton will be on a high coming off the win against Spurs and it’s apparent that the mood around the playing squad has received a major lift following Moyes’ arrival. What the boss will do in terms of selection and formation is hard to gauge. It’s highly tempting to stick with what worked last time out and I expect to see an unchanged lineup, with the team perhaps adopting more of a back three shape than was evident against the Londoners. If the Blues enjoy any tactical advantages over their opponents, then unpredictability is surely one.

Everton FC v Brighton & Hove Albion FC - Premier League

Everton were embarrassed in this fixture in August, but James Tarkowski has found form under Moyes

Brighton will look to invite the press, as we saw on opening day at Goodison, where an aggressive home side caused numerous turnovers, but were frustratingly unable to caplitalise. If the visitors can show the same energy and determination which was evident last weekend, then they can cause the hosts problems. Of course, that may be playing into Brighton’s hands. However, I don’t see Everton sitting off in a passive, defensive shell, as would have been the case under Sean Dyche. The team will allow the hosts to play out, in my opinion, but look to pressure them as they enter the middle third, maintaining a compact defensive shape, but crucially the potential for rapid counterattacks.

It’s to be noted that the Seagulls have failed to win any of their last four home games, being held by Southampton, Brentford and Arsenal — and beaten by Crystal Palace. In that setback, the South Londoners set up in a 3-4-3 shape and limited the home side to low-percentage efforts. More than half of Brighton’s shots were blocked and they only scored via a Marc Guehi own goal, late on.

Are Palace that much better than Everton? Could this gameplan be replicated today? I believe it can and that Moyes and his staff will have paid particular focus to that result during their match preparation. It’s still early days under the new man, so I think a win is possible, but unlikely; however I do believe that the Toffees can take something here.

    Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Everton

Statistics provided courtesy of transfermarkt.com, fbref.com and whoscored.com

As Everton prepares to face Brighton in their upcoming match, it’s important to take a closer look at the opposition and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. While Brighton may not be one of the top teams in the league, they are a formidable opponent that should not be underestimated.

One of Brighton’s key strengths is their solid defense. Led by the likes of Lewis Dunk and Ben White, Brighton have proven to be a tough team to break down. They are organized at the back and are capable of frustrating even the best attacking teams. Everton will need to be patient and creative in their approach to break down Brighton’s defense.

In attack, Brighton have some dangerous players such as Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard. These players possess pace and skill, and can cause problems for any defense. Everton’s backline will need to be alert and focused in order to keep Brighton’s attacking threats at bay.

However, despite Brighton’s strengths, Everton should not fear this matchup. The Toffees have shown that they are a strong team capable of competing with the best in the league. With players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Rodriguez in their ranks, Everton have the quality to create chances and score goals against Brighton.

This match presents an opportunity for Everton to continue their push for a top-four finish. While Brighton will be a tough opposition, Everton should approach this game with confidence and belief in their abilities. There is everything to play for in this matchup, and Everton will be looking to secure all three points to keep their momentum going.

In conclusion, Everton should not fear Brighton, but instead approach this match with a positive mindset and a determination to succeed. With the right game plan and execution, Everton have the potential to come out on top in this crucial matchup. Let’s hope for an exciting and competitive game as Everton takes on Brighton.

  • Brighton & Hove Albion vs Everton: Premier League preview, team news, stats & head-to-head

  • Brighton are looking to complete the league double over Everton for the first time, with this the 12th different campaign in which they’ve met.

  • Having been winless in their first four Premier League away games against Brighton (D2 L2), Everton have won two of their last three visits to the Amex Stadium (D1).

  • After an eight-game winless run in the Premier League, Brighton have now won both of their last two; they last won three in a row in the competition in September 2023. However, the Seagulls are winless in their last four at home in the league (D3 L1).

  • Everton have won just one of their last 21 Premier League away games (D8 L12), beating Ipswich 2-0 in October. Since that victory at Portman Road, the Toffees have scored just one goal in their six league games on the road (D3 L3).

  • No team have scored fewer second half goals than Everton (7) in the Premier League this season, while the Toffees have also shipped a league-high 68% of their goals after half-time this term (19/28). Indeed, in a Premier League table based on second half results this season, Everton would be bottom.

  • Only Nottingham Forest (39.2%) have a lower average possession figure than Everton (39.8%) in the Premier League this season. It’s the Toffees’ second-lowest possession on record in the competition (since 2003-04) after 2021-22 (39.1%).

  • Everton manager David Moyes has won just one of his 10 Premier League meetings with Brighton (D5 L4), though this did come in his last visit to the Amex Stadium in August 2023 with West Ham. It’s the Scotsman’s lowest win rate against any side in the competition (10%).

  • Brighton forward Danny Welbeck has been involved in more Premier League goals against Everton than he has against any other opponent (10 – 5 goals, 5 assists), scoring and assisting against the Toffees in the reverse fixture in August. His next game will be his 350th appearance in the competition.

  • Kaoru Mitoma has been directly involved in three goals in his last two Premier League games for Brighton (2 goals, 1 assist), as many as in his previous 18. With a goal here, he would become the first Japanese player to score in three consecutive Premier League appearances.

  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring for Everton in their 3-2 win against Spurs last time out, ending a run of 16 Premier League games without a goal. He also had six shots against Spurs, as many as he had in his previous six league appearances combined.

  • Brighton & Hove Albion will face off against Everton in an exciting Premier League clash this weekend. Both teams will be looking to secure a crucial victory as they continue their quest for a top-half finish in the league.

    Team News:
Brighton & Hove Albion will be without the services of Tariq Lamptey and Adam Lallana, who are both sidelined with injuries. However, they will be boosted by the return of Neal Maupay, who is expected to lead the line for the Seagulls.

Meanwhile, Everton will be without the services of Yerry Mina and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who are both nursing injuries. However, they will be boosted by the return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who will be looking to add to his impressive goal tally this season.

    Stats:
    – Brighton & Hove Albion have won just one of their last five Premier League matches, while Everton have won three of their last five.
    – Everton have scored 39 goals in the league this season, compared to Brighton’s 32 goals.

  • David Moyes ‘burnt out’ at Everton days after returning to management | Football | Sport

Newly-appointed Everton boss David Moyes is already feeling the strain as he grapples with the team’s goal-scoring crisis, less than a week after taking the helm at Goodison Park. Moyes made his Merseyside return on January 11, stepping in following Sean Dyche’s departure.

This marks a comeback for the Scottish manager, who previously led Everton until 2013 before a disappointing stint at Manchester United. His second tenure at Everton kicked off with a 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa, courtesy of Ollie Watkins’ solitary strike.

The defeat leaves Moyes’ side precariously perched just above the relegation zone, especially as their fellow strugglers also suffered losses. With Everton’s paltry tally of 15 goals being the second-lowest in the Premier League, Moyes faces a significant challenge.

Whether the solution lies in financial support from owners The Friedkin Group or within the squad itself, it’s clear that the task is taking its toll.

“At the moment I have to find a way for the team to get a result,” Moyes admitted post-Villa defeat. “I’ve only been here a couple of days and I’m nearly burnt out looking at how we can score more goals and how we can get players who can do that.

“With the squad we have, everybody is saying ‘How are you going to find that? ‘ If we get someone different that’s OK but we have to find ways within the squad, we have to make goals, score goals and improve our attacking play.

“They are not there trying not to play well. Maybe they are just needing someone to give them a lift and a little bit of quality to make the difference and we are just lacking that at the moment.”

Three of Everton’s 15 league goals this season have been scored by Dwight McNeil, who has also provided three assists. However, a knee injury has kept him out of the last six games, during which time Everton have only managed to score once.

Despite being in the bottom half of the table, Everton boast a strong defensive record, having conceded just 26 goals in 20 matches. Their defence will be put to the test in their next match against Tottenham, who have scored 43 goals this season – the second-highest tally in the league despite their inconsistent performances.

“There’s no magic cure,” said Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou following his team’s defeat to Arsenal. “We need to work hard and go into battle on Sunday and turnaround our fortunes and our season. There are always reasons why things happen but the reality is our results and form in the league has been nowhere near good enough. That needs to change.”

David Moyes ‘burnt out’ at Everton days after returning to management | Football | Sport

Former Everton manager David Moyes has reportedly been feeling burnt out just days after returning to management with the Toffees. The 58-year-old recently took charge of the Merseyside club for the second time following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

According to sources close to Moyes, the demands of managing a top-flight club have taken a toll on him, with the Scot struggling to cope with the pressures of the job. Despite his initial excitement at returning to his former club, Moyes is said to be feeling overwhelmed by the expectations and responsibilities that come with the role.

Moyes, who has managed clubs such as Manchester United, Sunderland, and West Ham United, is no stranger to the pressures of the Premier League. However, it appears that the intensity of the job has caught up with him once again, leading to concerns about his ability to continue in the role.

Fans of Everton will be hoping that Moyes can overcome his current struggles and lead the team to success in the upcoming season. However, with reports of his burnout circulating, it remains to be seen whether the experienced manager can rediscover his form and guide the Toffees to glory once again.
