Everyone in the Resident Evil universe knows about the Raccoon City incident. This was a deadly outbreak that saw almost the entire population of a peaceful little town turn into mindless zombies, and while some, such as Leon and Claire, managed to escape with their lives intact, not everyone was so lucky.
The Resident Evil series is expansive, housing some of the best action and horror games ever made.
Of course, the event itself took the lives of thousands of people, but within the story of Resident Evil, there were a few characters who were pretty important to the wider plot that also met their end during this horrific incident. Therefore, they deserve to be remembered for how they helped, or alternatively, how much of a struggle they made life for the protagonists.

Brad Acts As A Temporary Ally For Jill Before Meeting His Untimely Fate

Brad shows up near the beginning of Resident Evil 3 to help guide Jill to safety. As the first character that players run into, it seems as though Brad is going to be an ally who might stick around for a while, but it’s only minutes into his introduction that he meets his fate at the hands of none other than the Nemesis.
His death is changed around in the remake where he instead succumbs to the virus after trying to hold off a group of zombies in a bar. During the scuffle, he’s bitten and ends up outside the R.P.D., where Marvin and Carlos put him out of his misery. Brad may not have lasted long, but he still did his part in making Jill aware of what was going on after she was thrust into the nightmare.

Chief Irons
One Of The Most Satisfying Deaths In The Entire Series
Chief Irons, the sick and twisted leader of the R.P.D., played a big part in the outbreak that washed over Raccoon City. Not only that, but he also tries to kidnap Sherry which in turn makes Claire’s journey much longer and dangerous.
These staples of the Resident Evil franchise are what give this series its identity, while also separating it from other horror games.
Throughout Resident Evil 2, players find plenty of documents revealing Irons’ evil deeds, including how he would take bribes and blackmail his own colleagues. Therefore, when he finally gets ripped apart, despite being a gorefest, it’s also satisfying to see him meet his end amidst the chaos that he was partly responsible for.

Mikhail Victor
Victor Makes The Ultimate Sacrifice To Slow Down Nemesis
When Jill first meets Mikhail in the first few hours of the outbreak, the two don’t exactly get along too well. It doesn’t take long for Jill to realize though that Mikhail is ultimately a good guy just trying to fulfill his duty by saving as many people as possible, as is made very clear when he sacrifices himself to stop the Nemesis.
In both versions of Resident Evil 3, Mikhail makes himself a target as he holds back Nemesis from reaching Jill in the cable car. It might not have stopped the behemoth for good, but without Mikhail, it’s highly likely Jill’s great escape would have ended right there and then.

Ben Bertolucci
Ben Only Shows Up For A Few Minutes In His Cell Before Being Blown Apart
Leon stumbles across Ben not long after he meets Ada, where he can be found hiding away in a cell. In the original Resident Evil 2, Ben refuses to leave, but in the remake, he’s actually locked inside and is seeking a way to free himself.
Ben has a few items that Leon needs to enter the sewers, but after he gives away the goodies, Ben meets his untimely end in a pretty grizzly fashion. In the original, Birkin slices him in two, while in the remake, Mr X’s giant hand tears through the prison walls and smashes his head like a pumpkin. Either way, Ben has a pretty gruesome death, despite hiding away in one of the “safest” places in the city.

The Man Who Instigated The Entire Outbreak Loses His Life To The Chaos
If the finger was to be pointed at anyone for instigating the events that occurred in Raccoon City back in 1998, it would need to be aimed at William Birkin. Birkin, in an attempt to bring more prestige to his name, and uncover the ultimate life form, continued to experiment with the G-virus, until eventually, he was apprehended.
Out of the thousands of people who perished in the Raccoon City incident, these Resident Evil characters managed to make it out in one piece.
After injecting himself, and allowing the virus to seep into the city’s drinking water, Birkin became a mutated shell of his former self, lashing out at anyone that stood in his way. Eventually, after numerous stand-offs with Chris and Claire, he is eventually taken down and left to rot in the mess that he made.

Marvin Branagh
Marvin Does Everything He Can To Assist Leon And Claire Before Succumbing To The Infection
Marvin becomes a crucially important ally to Leon and Claire during their respective journeys. Not only does he explain the basic situation for the two of them, but he also advises them on how to move through the RPD, and he informs them that the monsters they are seeing are far from human.
Marvin communicates with the player as much as he can through the radio, but eventually, his infection spreads, and he suddenly becomes a flesh-hungry zombie who roams the main hall. Despite being an unlucky victim of the Raccoon City fiasco, Marvin’s memory still lives on through the knife that he gives to Leon, which the latter then uses in Resident Evil 4.

Robert Kendo’s fate is made pretty clear in the original Resident Evil 2 as fans get a grizzly look at the famed gunsmith becoming zombie snack food after they break into his shop. In the remake though, it’s made a little more obscure after Kendo appears with his recently zombified daughter.
With that being said though, in the Resident Evil 2 Remake, there is a what-if scenario that focuses on Kendo making his way out of the city. As a result, it’s more or less confirmed that Kendo decided to end his own life, but regardless, the Kendo name has continued to live on within the series through its weapons.

Annette Gets Swept Up In Her Husband’s Antics And Comes Clean During Her Final Moments
While most parents during the Raccoon City incident understandably tried to protect their families, the Birkins are a little different. While William was out rampaging across the underground sewers and facilities, Annette was hiding away in NEST, pondering ways to stop the virus from doing any more damage.
In the end, though, Annette does finally manage to come to her senses and informs Claire on how to create the DEVIL serum which could be used to vaccinate Sherry. However, while her daughter makes it out in one piece, Annette succumbs to the wounds dealt by her mutated husband and never manages to see it through the outbreak.
Anyone who is a little put off by the amount of backtracking involved in the original Resident Evil games ought to try these entries.

The Nemesis
A Hulking Behemoth With One Mission: Hunt Down Any Surviving S.T.A.R.S Members
Before and during the chaos of the Raccoon City outbreak, the folks at Umbrella, fearing that word would get out about their involvement, decided to manufacture a dangerous behemoth known as the Nemesis whose sole objective was to hunt down any survivors. More specifically, Nemesis was on the hunt for S.T.A.R.S members who had been aware of Umbrella’s connections in the Spencer Mansion fiasco not long before Raccoon City broke out, which is why he can be heard saying the word “Stars” out loud so often.
The reason Nemesis looks so similar to Tyrants is that he was created by injecting a regular Tyrant with the Nemesis Alpha parasite, boosting its durability and strength considerably. It would also allow him to carry weapons, most notably a rocket launcher and flamethrower, which he would use to try and take down Jill Valentine, whom he chases for the entirety of Resident Evil 3.

Giant Alligator
The Giant Alligator Is A Prime Example Of How The T-Virus Could Affect Animals
Believe it or not, the massive alligator that Leon comes across in Resident Evil 2 was once a baby who, unfortunately, was flushed down the toilet. After entering the sewers, this poor creature would then become infected with the T-Virus, causing it to grow to extreme proportions, barely even being able to fit within the confines of the sewers due to its staggering size.
Capcom decided to toy around with some of the core mechanics in these experimental and unique Resident Evil entries.
It’s a good thing Leon decided to run from this monstrosity rather than stand and fight, since its gigantic mouth and teeth would have made quick work of the rookie cop in barely any time at all if it got the chance. The alligator also serves as a reminder of the many creatures who eventually turned into mutated monsters as a result of Birkin and Umbrella’s antics in Raccoon City, and how dangerous they all became as a result.

Lickers
These Horrific Monsters Would Start Prowling The RPD Not Long After The Outbreak Kicked Off
The Lickers may look like mutated dogs at first glance, but these horrific wall-climbing creatures were actually once human. When a zombified human is exposed to too much of the T-virus, there’s a chance they will shed their skin, expose their brain, and grow an incredibly large tongue, transforming them into a Licker.
The name actually came from the cops at the R.P.D. after they ran into the Lickers who had begun infesting the police department not long after the outbreak first started. Though Lickers have shown up in most of the games since it was in Resident Evil 2 where they made their debut as a sick and twisted visual representation of how far gone the outbreak had really become.

The Drain Deimos End Up Being A Real Thorn In Jill’s Side During Her Desperate Escape

Fans might remember the creepy Drain Deimos bugs from Resident Evil 3 where they chase Jill around as she tries to navigate her way through the Raccoon City substation. These grotesque entities are believed to have once been fleas that absorbed the T-Virus after trying to collect fluids and nutrients from dead bodies, causing them to grow at an alarming rate and creating the nightmarish beings that stalk the streets and underbelly of Raccoon City during the outbreak.
Mutated animals aren’t exactly anything new in the world of Resident Evil, but there’s something all so creepy about seeing insects blown up to such a proportion, allowing them to tear their enemies to shreds with little to no effort, as they almost do to Jill during her great escape.

A Glimpse At The Terrifying Creatures Umbrella Was Cooking Up In The NEST Facility
The Giant Moth was a B.O.W manufactured by Umbrella in their secret underground lab known as NEST during the Raccoon City Incident. After one of these horrific creatures managed to escape, it then made its own nest in the B5F Computer Room where it can be found sitting idly on the wall, waiting for its moment to pounce.
Not everyone who got caught up in the Raccoon City incident managed to escape the nightmare, including these unlucky individuals in Resident Evil.
If it wasn’t for this moth making a quick getaway, it’s unlikely that fans could have ever known that Umbrella was creating such obscene creatures. As a result, it results in a shocking discovery considering how enormous the insect is, making for a truly creepy sight when players first stumble across it.

Ivy Zombies
Even Umbrella Researchers Weren’t Safe From The Chaos Caused By The Outbreak
Once the alarm bells rang to indicate that Raccoon City would be going into full lockdown, the researchers who had been looking after Plant 43, a successor to Plant 42 seen in the first game, would be forced to flee. However, since a lack of maintenance had thrown the plant into a frenzy, it ended up killing several of its carers and inserting seedlings into their bodies, eventually turning them into mindless corpses who are easily recognizable from the vines that hang around their bodies.
If anything, the Ivy monsters act as a reminder that everyone was impacted by the outbreak, not just innocent civilians, but even Umbrella researchers too. Seeing them end up in such a sorry state really puts into perspective just how widespread the infection had become, with almost the entire town becoming monsters.

Mr. X
T-00 Was Airlifted Into Raccoon City To Wipe Out Any Survivors
T-00, or Mr. X, as he is commonly referred to by the fanbase, isn’t the first Tyrant seen in the series, considering one showed up at the end of the very first game. However, T-00, alongside a few other Tyrants, was designed to be superior to the model that came before them and was also given the mission of retrieving Sherry Birking and a sample of the G-Virus, alongside wiping out any survivors.
While the handful of other Tyrants died not long after being airlifted into Raccoon City, Mr. X managed to land safely in the R.P.D., where he then stalked Leon and Claire to the ends of the earth just to ensure nobody escaped the city alive. Mr. X would go on to become one of the most popular and recognizable monsters in the series, despite him not being seen again after perishing when the bombs dropped.

Birkin Succumbed To The G-Virus And Became A Grotesque Shell Of His Former Self
William Birkin wasn’t always a monster. In fact, this highly intelligent scientist was once a loving father, but after getting a little too carried away with his work, where he was aiming to create the ultimate life form, he was eventually apprehended by HUNK and his team, resulting in Birkin injecting himself with the G-Virus as a final last resort.
Not long after, Birkin would begin mutating into a husk of his former self, growing a giant right arm that would eventually expose a glaring eye that would become his weak point in boss battles. After becoming a mutant, Birkin would even try to track down his own daughter, Sherry, only to be intercepted by Claire, who managed to keep him at bay long enough for him to be obliterated by the self-destructive blast at the end of the game.
These opening lines from the Resident Evil franchise did an excellent job of setting the stage for their respective games.

The Resident Evilfranchise has been hitting its stride lately. Following the landmark success of Resident Evil 4, the franchise stumbled a bit with Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, which many fans considered to lean far too much into the action side of the action-horror equation. That’s not to say that they are bad games, but only that they departed greatly from what a large portion of the playerbase was expecting from Resident Evil.
Then came Resident Evil 7, which was effectively a soft reboot of the franchise, succeeded by Resident Evil Village just a few years later. But there’s been another key pillar of modern Resident Evil‘s construction that can’t be overlooked: remakes. Starting with the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019, Capcom has worked its way through the games in order, with the incredibly well-received Resident Evil 4 remake being the studio’s most recent endeavor. Since RE4‘s remake, rumors and speculation have run rampant, as audiences try to guess where the franchise is going to go next. Chances are, it’ll go back to Resident Evil 5.
Players would once again get to fill the shoes of Chris Redfield in a Resident Evil 5 remake, and the character could feel better than ever.
A Resident Evil 5 Remake Seems Likely, and Not Just for the Obvious Reasons
Wesker Is Back in Action in 2023’s Resident Evil 4
Naturally, one would assume that Capcom will tackle Resident Evil 5at some point, as the previous three RE remakes have seen great critical and commercial success thus far. But Capcom could very well choose to remake the first Resident Evil to make it more aligned with the modern interpretations of its successors, or it could remake a spin-off like Resident Evil Revelations or Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Indeed, these outcomes are precisely what fans and journalists have speculated about, and there’ve been plenty of rumors and leaks to support such notions.
But it still seems more likely that Resident Evil 5 will be next up on the remake chopping block. A major reason to believe this, aside from the fact that Capcom has only been remaking mainline entries thus far, is that Wesker is featured in the Resident Evil 4 remake, particularly so in the Separate Ways DLC. This is his first appearance in the RE remake saga, and the foreboding final scene of Separate Ways seems to be queuing up his role in Resident Evil 5, as he doubles down on his plan of mass extinction. It’s impossible to know for sure, but it certainly seems like his presentation in the remake was designed with the intention of setting up the RE5 story. It would therefore be strange to take a narrative detour in the interim.
Resident Evil 5 Could Be the Next Remake, but Probably Not the Next Resident Evil Game
Even if Capcom is remaking the first Resident Evil or a spin-off game, which definitely seems likely, it’s safe to say that RE5 will come first, or at least not be too far behind. That said, it would be surprising if the RE5 remake were to come onto the scene before Resident Evil 9. 2025 will mark four years since the last proper, forward-moving entry in the Resident Evil franchise, which left a lot up in the air with respect to the franchise’s future. With the exception of the Shadows of Rose DLC, which may or may not be linked to the next Resident Evil, nothing has come down the pipeline regarding the next steps in the overall RE narrative.
Thus, Capcom is in something of an interesting position when it comes to the Resident Evil 5 remake. On the one hand, it seems like the most logical next step, and there’s definitely a strong financial incentive, given the performance of the previous remakes, to get it to market, but it would also mean further delaying the next original RE game. In other words, an RE5 remake is probably around the corner, but it’s also probably not the first cab off the rank at the moment.
The Umbrella Corporation and its crop of lethal viruses have been destroyed and contained. But a new, more dangerous threat has emerged. Years after surviving the events in Raccoon City, Chris Redfield has been fighting the scourge of bio-organic weapons all over the world. Now a member of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), Chris is sent to Africa to investigate a biological agent that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSAA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the disturbing turn of events.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Authorities held a press conference Thursday morning (Jan. 2), providing updates on the Bourbon Street terror attack that claimed the lives of 14 victims and injured 35 others early New Year’s Day.
FBI Deputy Director Christopher Raia confirmed that 14 victims died in the attack, along with the suspect, Shamsud Din Jabbar, bringing the total to 15 fatalities.
“This was a premeditated, evil act,” Raia told reporters.

Officials revealed that Jabbar posted five videos between 1:20 a.m. and 3:02 a.m. on New Year’s Day, proclaiming support for ISIS.
In the first video, Raia says Jabbar expressed a desire to kill his friends and family, but ultimately desired to target Bourbon Street so the media headlines would highlight what he called the war between “believers and disbelievers.”
Jabbar stated he joined ISIS before summer of 2024.
“He was one hundred percent inspired by ISIS,” Raia said.
Authorities say Jabbar rented a pickup truck in Houston on Dec. 30 and drove to New Orleans on Dec. 31. Surveillance video reportedly shows Jabbar planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in coolers at two locations – the intersection of Bourbon and Orleans streets, and another two blocks away – before driving his truck into a crowd.
“It’s very hard to put into words and very hard to see,” Raia said, reflecting on the devastating scene.
The FBI confirmed that two viable IEDs were rendered safe by bomb technicians, while other reports of suspicious devices were determined to be unfounded or unviable. The public is not in danger, Raia assured.
Jabbar stayed at an Airbnb on Mandeville Street, where bomb-making materials were discovered. The house has been secured, and agents are conducting a thorough search for additional evidence.
Three cell phones tied to Jabbar and two laptops found at the Mandeville Street property are currently being processed.

Calls for Public Assistance
Authorities are asking anyone who was in the French Quarter on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day to come forward, especially those who may have stopped near the coolers containing the IEDs. Raia emphasized that these individuals are not connected to the attack but could provide valuable information.
Raia clarified that early suspicions of co-conspirators were based on surveillance footage showing patrons briefly interacting with the coolers containing IEDs, but the FBI has since determined these individuals were uninvolved, confirming that Jabbar acted alone.
French Quarter Status
Bourbon Street remains closed to the public as local and federal officials conclude their investigation. Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the street would reopen around 30 minutes before the Sugar Bowl’s 3 p.m. kickoff.
Potential Link to Vegas Incident
The FBI is investigating a cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas for potential links to Jabbar. However, Raia cautioned that it is “very early in the investigation” and no definitive connection has been established.

Landry Tours Scene
Governor Jeff Landry arrived with law enforcement officials to survey the area of the Bourbon Street terror attack Thursday morning before the press conference.
“At the end of the day, we want New Orleans to get back to business…and we also want to remember all those who lost their lives on the street,” Landry said in an exclusive interview with Fox 8.
Standing from the freshly cleared area where 15 people died, including the suspect, and at least 35 were injured, Landry made the point the victims had come to Bourbon Street to celebrate. He said that it would be an additional tragedy if the tourist center couldn’t return to its usual status.
“What people need to understand is, that it’s a two-pronged operation,” Landry said. “We’ve got a football game to put on today and at the same time there’s an active investigation by the FBI on a constant basis.”

Political reaction to the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans that is being investigated as a terrorist incident, came swiftly on Wednesday, with the White House saying that Joe Biden had been briefed by senior leadership at the FBI and by the leadership of the Department of Homeland Security.
The president also spoke by phone this morning with the New Orleans mayor, LaToya Cantrell, “to offer full federal support” according to the White House.
The attorney general Merrick Garland said that the FBI, the ATF, and prosecutors with the national security division and the local federal prosecutor’s office are all working on the terrorism case.
“My heart is broken for those who began their year by learning people they love were killed in this horrific attack,” Garland said. He vowed to “deploy every available resource to conduct this investigation”.
Donald Trump appeared to refer to the suspect, who was shot dead by police, as a foreign national. Police have not confirmed the suspect’s identity.
“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” the president-elect posted on his Truth Social network.
“The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”
Troy Carter, the Democrat congressman whose 2nd district includes New Orleans, commended “the swift actions of the New Orleans Police Department and federal law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to neutralize the threat and secure the area”.
In a follow-up post on X, Carter said he hand spoken with the homeland security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, and the White House regarding last night’s “unspeakable act of violence”.
“My heart is with the victims, their families, and everyone who witnessed this horrific attack during what should have been a joyful New Year’s celebration,” he added.
The House speaker, Mike Johnson, whose congressional district is west of New Orleans, said: “The vicious attack on innocent people celebrating the New Year in New Orleans early this morning was an act of pure evil, and justice must be swift for anyone who was involved.
“Please join us in praying for the victims, their families, and the first responders and investigators on the scene,” Johnson added in a statement on X.
The district attorney who represents New Orleans, Jason Williams, said law enforcement officers were “ready to deal with any event”. But the individual “had his mind set on hurting as many people as he could”. The police response, he added, “was swift and very overwhelming”.
Police in New Orleans said earlier that at least 10 people were killed and 35 more were injured after a man drove a pickup truck into crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year’s Day, in what city officials called a deliberate attack.
The New Orleans police superintendent, Anne Kirkpatrick, said the man drove the truck at high speed into crowds around 3.15am, before crashing and opening fire. Two police officers were wounded and investigators said they had found what appeared to be improvised explosive devices in the vehicle.
“It was very intentional behavior. This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” Kirkpatrick said in a news conference Wednesday morning. “He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”
Williams said in a statement that the city “is incredibly resilient, but this morning our hearts break for the innocent lives devastated by this hateful act.”
Williams thanked first responders “that activated quickly to prevent further carnage and continue to work this scene” and requested that the public avoid the area as law enforcement “continue processing the very large crime scene”.
