  • Taliban deputy tells leader there is no excuse for education bans on Afghan women and girls

A senior Taliban figure has urged the group’s leader to scrap education bans on Afghan women and girls, saying there is no excuse for them, in a rare public rebuke of government policy.

Sher Abbas Stanikzai, political deputy at the Foreign Ministry, made the remarks in a speech on Saturday in southeastern Khost province.

He told an audience at a religious school ceremony there was no reason to deny education to women and girls, “just as there was no justification for it in the past and there shouldn’t be one at all.”

The government has barred females from education after sixth grade. Last September, there were reports authorities had also stopped medical training and courses for women.

In Afghanistan, women and girls can only be treated by female doctors and health professionals. Authorities have yet to confirm the medical training ban.

“We call on the leadership again to open the doors of education,” said Stanikzai in a video shared by his official account on the social platform X. “We are committing an injustice against 20 million people out of a population of 40 million, depriving them of all their rights. This is not in Islamic law, but our personal choice or nature.”

Stanikzai was once the head of the Taliban team in talks that led to the complete withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan.

It is not the first time he has said that women and girls deserve to have an education. He made similar remarks in September 2022, a year after schools closed for girls and months and before the introduction of a university ban.

But the latest comments marked his first call for a change in policy and a direct appeal to Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.

Ibraheem Bahiss, an analyst with Crisis Group’s South Asia program, said Stanikzai had periodically made statements calling girls’ education a right of all Afghan women.

“However, this latest statement seems to go further in the sense that he is publicly calling for a change in policy and questioned the legitimacy of the current approach,” Bahiss said.

In the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, earlier this month, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai urged Muslim leaders to challenge the Taliban on women and girls’ education.

She was speaking at a conference hosted by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Muslim World League.

The U.N. has said that recognition is almost impossible while bans on female education and employment remain in place and women can’t go out in public without a male guardian.

No country recognizes the Taliban as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan, but countries like Russia have been building ties with them.

India has also been developing relations with Afghan authorities.

In Dubai earlier this month, a meeting between India’s top diplomat, Vikram Mistri, and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi showed their deepening cooperation.

In a recent development, a Taliban deputy has reportedly told the leader of the group that there is no excuse for banning education for Afghan women and girls. This statement comes amidst growing concern and backlash from the international community over the Taliban’s oppressive policies towards women’s rights.

The deputy, whose identity has not been disclosed, is said to have emphasized the importance of education for all Afghan citizens, regardless of gender. The deputy reportedly argued that denying education to women and girls not only goes against basic human rights principles but also undermines the country’s long-term development and stability.

This bold stance from within the Taliban leadership is a rare and hopeful sign that there may be internal dissent and pushback against the group’s extremist policies. It also underscores the growing pressure on the Taliban to reform and respect the rights of all Afghan citizens, especially women and girls.

It remains to be seen how the Taliban leader will respond to this dissenting voice from within his ranks. However, this development serves as a reminder that the fight for women’s rights in Afghanistan is far from over, and that there are individuals within the Taliban who recognize the importance of education for all. Let us hope that this message will lead to positive change for Afghan women and girls.

  • Warriors’ Stephen Curry says thumb no excuse for 0-of-8 half

SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry acknowledged his injured right thumb bothered him but said it wasn’t the reason why he matched the worst shooting half of his career, missing all eight of his second-half shots in a 118-108 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night at Chase Center.

Curry shot 4-for-17, including 2-for-9 on 3-pointers, to finish with 13 points and nine assists.

While he keeps getting his shooting thumb banged up, Curry would not use the injury as an excuse.

“It sucks, but it’s not an excuse for anything,” Curry said. “Got to play through it. I went 8-for-8 with it [against the 76ers]. It’s just something that has been lingering to the point that it gets hit every once in a while. It’s one of those things. It is almost gone, and then it gets knocked again. I will deal with it, but it shouldn’t bother me like it did tonight.”

Curry has been battling the thumb injury and pain in his knees, which the team has had to manage. Golden State (22-23) has held out Curry in a game during back-to-backs because of the knee pain, though he did play in the Warriors’ most recent back-to-back set against the Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls.

“It’s trending in the right direction,” Curry said of his knees. “It’s still something you got to stick with the maintenance and all that type of stuff. For me to play, it checked all the boxes. In terms of how it responds from game to game, if that continues, I like where I’m at.”

Keeping the injured thumb from getting hit has been an issue for Curry. Before facing the Sixers on Jan. 2, Curry was listed on the injury report with a sprained right thumb. He made all eight of his 3-point attempts and scored 30 points in that victory. He also drilled seven triples in a win at Minnesota on Jan. 15.

But there are times when Curry can be seen shaking his right hand after getting the thumb whacked during a game. The Lakers’ defense was also a thorn in Curry’s side Saturday.

The Lakers held Curry scoreless in the second half while contesting seven of his eight shots. For the game, Curry shot 1-for-9, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range, on contested shots.

“Obviously Steph didn’t shoot it well,” said Lakers center Anthony Davis, who had 36 points and 13 rebounds. “But I think a lot of that was on us — our guards … constantly getting into the ball, making it tough on him. So I think everybody played a part of the Steph Curry defense that we tried to play on him tonight.”

With the Warriors in a stretch in which they play eight of nine games at home, Curry has said this span could “make or break” the season as Golden State tries to get back above .500 without the injured Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga. Green is considered week-to-week with a calf injury, and coach Steve Kerr says Kuminga is not close to returning after suffering a severe ankle injury three weeks ago.

The most nagging injury on the team, however, is Curry’s shooting thumb.

“I think every time it gets hit, it’s like a step back,” Curry said. “It’s just annoying. Obviously I am going to play through it, but I was joking with one of our doctors tonight, I didn’t even want to mention it because it’s like as soon as it gets 100%, it gets knocked again.

“Again, not an excuse. I try not to worry about when I am out there, but hopefully it will clear up sooner than later.”

Golden State Warriors’ star point guard Stephen Curry has been known for his exceptional shooting skills, but even he has off nights. In a recent game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Curry struggled in the first half, going 0-of-8 from the field.

Despite suffering a thumb injury earlier in the season, Curry refused to blame his poor shooting performance on his injury. He acknowledged that he was not playing up to his usual standards and vowed to do better in the second half.

Curry’s dedication to his craft and refusal to make excuses for his performance is a testament to his professionalism and work ethic. As one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Curry’s commitment to excellence is an inspiration to his teammates and fans alike.

While every player has their off nights, Curry’s determination to improve and bounce back from a tough first half is a reminder of his greatness on and off the court. As the Warriors continue their season, fans can expect Curry to come back stronger and more determined than ever.

Syracuse coach Fran Brown gives surprising excuse why he will dodge Holiday Bowl ‘eggnog dump’ tradition

Bowl season often brings unique traditions and entertaining storylines beyond just the matchups themselves. This year’s DIRECTV Holiday Bowl, featuring No. 21 Syracuse and Washington State on Dec. 27, has one such quirky twist: the winning coach will receive the second-ever “eggnog dump.”

Last year, USC head coach Lincoln Riley received the inaugural eggnog bath after the Trojans’ 42-28 victory over Louisville. But if Syracuse manages to secure their 10th win of the season, don’t expect head coach Fran Brown to partake in the eggnog tradition.

“I’m allergic to eggs,” Brown revealed to reporters on Thursday. “So Dan Villari has taken an NIL deal… I think Meyers Creek already said they would love for him to be the guy to do it. I’m allergic to eggs, but I’d definitely love to pour the eggnog on Dan if I could.”

Villari, a tight end for Syracuse, quickly responded on X: “Gotchu covered coach.”

It’s unclear if Brown’s comments were entirely serious or if he simply wants to dodge the sticky mess of a holiday-themed celebration. Either way, avoiding an eggnog bath is an understandable wish.

Whoever does receive the eggnog, it will be given by competitive eater Joey Chestnut, who was officially named, “Chief Eggnog Official.”

This season has been a remarkable one for Syracuse under Brown’s leadership. The Orange have a chance to notch 10 wins, finish the year ranked, and claim their first bowl victory since 2018. Whether Brown ends up dodging eggnog or watching Villari take the plunge, a win would cap an impressive campaign for Syracuse.

Syracuse coach Fran Brown gives surprising excuse why he will dodge Holiday Bowl ‘eggnog dump’ tradition

In a shocking turn of events, Syracuse coach Fran Brown has announced that he will be skipping the Holiday Bowl’s infamous “eggnog dump” tradition this year. The tradition, which involves players and coaches getting drenched in eggnog after a victory, has become a staple of the Holiday Bowl festivities. However, Coach Brown has cited a surprising reason for his decision to opt out.

In a statement released by the university, Coach Brown explained that he has a severe dairy allergy and cannot risk being exposed to eggnog. “While I understand the importance of tradition and camaraderie, my health must come first,” Brown said. “I have had a history of severe reactions to dairy products and cannot take the risk of being drenched in eggnog.”

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans and players, with some expressing disappointment that Coach Brown will not be participating in the tradition. However, many have praised him for prioritizing his health and setting a positive example for others with food allergies.

Despite his decision to skip the eggnog dump, Coach Brown has assured fans that he will be cheering on his team from the sidelines and fully supporting them in their quest for victory. It remains to be seen how the team will fare without their coach taking part in the post-game celebration, but one thing is for certain – Coach Brown’s health and well-being are his top priorities.
