Elon Musk’s ex-girlfriend and Canadian singer Grimes, has shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) revealing that she grew up in a half-Indian household. She made the revelation in response to the surge of anti-India sentiment on American social media following Sriram Krishnan’s appointment to the Donald Trump administration. Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, spoke out against the racist and bigoted posts targeting Indians.
Taking to X, she revealed that her stepfather is Indian and that she had a “fire childhood” in a half-Indian household. In her post, Grimes expressed her dismay, writing: “Suddenly concocting anti Indian energy out of nowhere is embarrassing y’all. Also, they were clear they planned to do this.”
She opened up about her childhood, writing: “My step dad’s Indian, I had a fire childhood in a half Indian household. Indian culture jives very well with western culture.”
Grimes for those unaware was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. In the post, she explained that after her parents’ divorce, her mother remarried Ravi Sidhoo, the director of East India Carpets in Vancouver.
‘I barely consider myself a singer’: Grimes
Asked if she “Would India be okay with being flooded with American culture, so much that it changes their culture significantly? Would they care that the two jive well together?”, she answered “We already did this to them. It has caused a ton of problems for them”.
One user said “I always thought Indian and western cultures jive well together, but what sucks is that these aren’t just opinions, but statements of people who hold power. This is legitimately scary for those reasons”. Grimes replied stating “I mean the highest power disagrees. I’m also seeing lots of powerful ppl disagreeing. It’s good to remember negative comments feel louder and more numerous. If you haven’t much been subjected to social media toxicity it’s good to remember ur monkey brain is telling you ur gonna get kicked out of the tribe and die of starvation or rape – important to fight the monkey brain impulses that social media seeks to trigger”.
Another user asked “When they start singing instead of you – you might change your mind. Do you think you would be successful in bollywood?”. To this, she responded “I *literally* constantly complain that it’s bizarre here hasn’t been a Bollywood hit in the us. In fact, I shud work on this. & Yes they are better at singing than me – they’re arguably the best in the world. I barely consider myself a singer”.
