  • Unai Emery interview: Jhon Duran exit means Aston Villa out to reshape attack with emphasis on ‘recovering talents’ | Football News

In the week that Aston Villa confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, they also sold their top scorer. Jhon Duran’s departure will be a disappointment to some. The challenge for Unai Emery is to ensure the changes make Villa stronger.

Dealing with the twin tests of the Premier League and Europe has been a theme of the season. They go to Wolves on Saturday after the high of that victory over Celtic on Wednesday knowing that they have not won after a European game since September.

But these past few weeks, in which Diego Carlos and Emiliano Buendia have also left the building, have included the added distraction of the transfer window. How is the man expected to manage all these moving parts coping with the myriad demands?

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking about Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins on Wednesday

“Always, in football, it is a busy time,” Emery tells Sky Sports. “Even when you are resting, even when you are on holiday, always our minds are thinking something around football, around the squad, around the players, around the objectives we can face.”

Another constant topic of the campaign has been how to accommodate Duran alongside Ollie Watkins in the Villa team. It was a conundrum that Emery was never able to solve. Their last game together, for half an hour in Monaco, was not a success.

Speaking at the club’s training ground, as the screens playing Sky Sports News tell of interest in Joao Felix, Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford, Emery explains his plans for life post-Duran. Do not expect him to try to replace the Colombian striker like for like.

“We are in a new way,” he insists. “I am practising how we can play with Donyell Malen. The club is working [on players] to join us but, of course, now we have players in the squad ready to play, ready to be versatile as well and to play in different positions.”

Aston Villa’s Unai Emery is reluctant to let go of Ollie Watkins in the transfer window

    Unai Emery on Donyell Malen

Speaking to Unai Emery about January signing Donyell Malen:

“We were following him for the last year and, in this moment, we needed to replace Jaden Philogene. He was on our list, one of the priority players we could sign in the circumstances, economically, with the style of the player, the versatile player he is.

“We are working now, for 10 days or more or less, in the training sessions with him, practising in different positions as well, attacking third, sometimes right side, which is a little bit of a priority, but as well as a No.10 and as a striker.

“He is a player, he likes to be close in the opponent’s goal and he likes to score goals, I think we need one player like him, to try to add us numbers through the goals.”

Malen, a £21m signing from Borussia Dortmund, made his debut on the right wing off the bench against West Ham but Emery believes he can use him as a striker if needed. It is a better solution, perhaps. Players who can cover Watkins but also play with him.

“Ollie has always been consistent and usually he can play because he is a very strong player, physically as well, playing 90 minutes in a row of matches. But of course we have to have one plan B in case he is not available for 90 minutes or to play some matches.

“But we have players in the squad with this possibility. Donyell Malen and Morgan Rogers played as a striker. Of course, we are watching the transfer window’s last days, if we can sign a striker a striker with the possibility to be versatile in the attacking third.”

Versatility has been essential of late. Against West Ham, an injury to Tyrone Mings required Lucas Digne to play as a makeshift centre-back. Against Celtic, Boubacar Kamara played there with Matty Cash’s early exit forcing Lamare Bogarde to right-back.

“The players we have I am very proud of how they respond in different circumstances with the level we need to achieve. We drew at home to West Ham but we reacted very well against Celtic last Wednesday and the response was coming quick.

“The most important thing is that they respond not after but before, when we need them, how they are prepared to do it. This is what I am most proud of. I can feel the players are always open to help and to support every decision that I have to make.”

Getting more from players is what Emery does. It is worth reminding that nine of the starting line-up that beat Celtic were at the club when he arrived in October 2022, with Villa languishing in the bottom six of the Premier League table. He improves players.

He fixes them too, preferring to coax the best from a talent that had not been maximised than take someone with a lower ceiling. This is something Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, referenced when addressing the interest in Joao Felix and Asensio.

    Monchi on Unai Emery

Monchi, Aston Villa’s president of football operations, speaking to Spanish television channel Cope about Joao Felix and Marco Asensio on Thursday evening:

“They are similar players, who Unai Emery likes. Asensio was tried by Aston Villa before I arrived. Last summer we were close to Joao. Neither of them are easy because in terms of salary and cost they are not simple.

“If there is a coach in world football who recovers players, it is Unai Emery. He has been able to recover talents. Joao Felix has talent, and it is only a matter of finding the right environment to bring out the best version of himself. And Unai works very, very well on that.”

    ‘Recovering talents’

Putting Monchi’s comments to Emery, in which he called him the best at ‘recovering talents’, he replies: “We worked in Sevilla for four years together. He is speaking about two players, they are not playing in their club now consistently, Asensio and Joao Felix.”

“They are potential players, maybe we can add, but we have other players waiting on our list.” The same, of course, could be said of Rashford. “If some of them are coming, this is my challenge, try to get the best of them and try to be protagonists with them.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

With Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran both potentially leaving Aston Villa, The Transfer Show debate whether Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford could be set for a shock move to Unai Emery’s side.

“But I am positive about the process, the demand we face with the players we have. As a team, we have John McGinn back from injury. Jacob Ramsey as well, hopefully we can get Ramsey the consistency for the next month like he did not have last year.

“Really, this is my motivation, how we can manage as well the player that we have and how we can manage as well the objective we have in front of us.” The next objective? Well, that is simple. Put Europe to the back of their minds and beat Wolves on Saturday.

    Saturday 1st February 5:00pm

“After playing in Europe, the motivation we have to play in the Premier League should be the same. We only need to rest, get good sleep, recover energy and then play. This is how we want to build our team, our mentality as players, as a team and as a club.

“Of course, you have to enjoy it as well. Playing different competitions, matches every few days. We are focusing on Wolves. It means a lot for the supporters. We will try to get our best performances collectively, individually, try to compete and try to win.

“Each match is a challenge. Now, the most important is against Wolves. My interest in winning is the same as the Champions League. Even more so in the Premier League because it is through the Premier League that we are going to achieve our objectives.”

Watch Wolves vs Aston Villa live on Sky Sports Premier League from 5pm; kick-off 5.30pm

In a recent interview, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery discussed the departure of Jhon Duran and the club’s plans to reshape their attack with a focus on “recovering talents.”

Duran, who recently left Villa for a new challenge, was a key player in the team’s attack. Emery acknowledged his contributions but emphasized that the club is now looking to refocus their strategy.

“We thank Jhon for his time with us and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Emery said. “But now, we are looking to reshape our attack and bring in players who can help us achieve our goals.”

Emery revealed that the club is placing a strong emphasis on “recovering talents” – players who may have been overlooked or undervalued in the past but have the potential to make a big impact.

“We believe that there are many talented players out there who just need the right opportunity to shine,” Emery explained. “We are committed to finding and developing these players to help strengthen our squad.”

Fans of Aston Villa can look forward to seeing some new faces in the team as Emery and his staff work to reshape the attack and bring in fresh talent. With a focus on recovering talents, the club is aiming to build a stronger and more competitive squad for the upcoming season.

  • Blues finally green light big-name exit as transfer conditions are set in stone

AC Milan are confident they can bring Chelsea misfit Joao Felix to the Italian giants before the transfer window shuts, TEAMtalk can reveal.

The Portugal international swapped Atletico Madrid for Chelsea last summer for a fee in the region of £45.5 million (€53m, $59m) but he has struggled for game time thus far.

Felix, who had a loan spell with the Blues in the second half of the 2022/23 season, has made 20 appearances in all competitions this term but he has just three Premier League starts to his name.

Head coach Enzo Maresca admitted it is “difficult” to hand regular minutes to the 25-year-old, particularly when Cole Palmer has been the club’s standout attacker.

TEAMtalk previously revealed that Milan wanted to complete a deal for the former Barcelona loanee, with head coach Sergio Conceicao a ‘big admirer’ of his talents.

Now, our sources state the Serie A team believe they can get this move over the line, with Chelsea giving a loan move the green light. We understand that a buy option is not out of the question and Felix himself is pushing for a San Siro transfer.

Furthermore, Chelsea are evaluating all loan options, so it is not set in stone that Milan seal the deal with this one.

DON’T MISS: Fabrizio Romano gives two Chelsea exits Here we Go confirmation as FOUR departures hurtle closer

Maresca admits to ‘difficult’ Felix situation

With Nicolas Jackson leading Chelsea’s attack and Palmer often behind him, that has made it difficult for the versatile Felix and Christopher Nkunku to get much of a look in.

Both have been linked with a Stamford Bridge exit, something Maresca has not ruled out.

“The only thing I’ve said since the start of this season is that it’s difficult to play him with so many attacking players. In my idea it means that if Joao plays, it means Cole [Palmer] doesn’t play. Or, if Joao [Felix] plays he has to play with Cole together, but it depends on the game,” he said last month.

“For me it’s quite easy, we have three players but they are more or less similar; Cole, Joao and Christopher Nkunku. Joao played some games, Christopher also played and they both started against Ipswich and Southampton they played, Leicester they played.

“Some games they can both play together, but not every game because every game is a bit different.”

Chelsea transfer roundup: Garnacho latest, Man City ace targeted

All eyes are on whether or not Alejandro Garnacho will leave Manchester United before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

The Chelsea-linked winger is said to be interested in a Blues move but there are a number of reasons why that may not happen.

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a last-ditch move for Manchester City star Nico O’Reilly, after giving up on United’s Kobbie Mainoo.

The 19-year-old would be a cheaper option, as would Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou.

Finally, Tottenham are trying to gazump Chelsea in the race to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi – who is into the last 18 months of his contract.

Who has been Chelsea’s biggest flop of the Todd Boehly era?

After weeks of speculation and negotiations, Blues have finally given the green light for a big-name exit as transfer conditions have been set in stone. The player in question has been the subject of intense interest from several top clubs, but it seems that a deal is finally in the works.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of this transfer, and now it seems that their wishes will soon be granted. The player’s departure is sure to have a significant impact on the team, but with the transfer conditions now firmly established, it looks like the move is all but certain.

Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting transfer saga unfolds.

  • NFL News: Josh Grizzard Reportedly Promoted to Bucs OC After Liam Coen’s Jaguars Exit | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

TAMPA, FLORIDA - JANUARY 12: Detail view of a Tampa Bay Buccaneers helmet prior to an NFL football wild card playoff game between the Washington Commanders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium on January 12, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Perry Knotts/Getty Images)

    Perry Knotts/Getty Images

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly found their new offensive coordinator after Liam Coen left to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Friday that Tampa Bay promoted pass-game coordinator Josh Grizzard to the role. Garafolo noted Tampa Bay “keeps continuity and hands the play-calling reins over to a coach who is highly regarded in the building” with this move.

Coen’s departure was certainly a roller-coaster ride for the franchise.

As Nick Shook of NFL.com detailed, Coen was initially a candidate for the Jaguars but pulled out of consideration and appeared to be heading back to Tampa Bay with a pay raise. However, he went back to visit with Jacksonville after it fired general manager Trent Baalke.

The Buccaneers attempted to get a hold of him when he was visiting the Jaguars, and Coen eventually reached out to head coach Todd Bowles.

Still, the result was Coen moving to the AFC South and leaving the Bucs with a sudden OC opening.

That vacancy is no more following the promotion of Grizzard.

The 2024 campaign was his first season as Tampa Bay’s pass-game coordinator after he spent seven years on the staff with the Miami Dolphins. He was a quality control coach and a wide receivers coach at different times during his tenure with Miami.

Grizzard found success in his first year with the Buccaneers, as quarterback Baker Mayfield set career highs in completion percentage (71.4), passing yards (4,500) and passing touchdowns (41) while leading the team to an NFC South crown.

It was the fourth straight division championship for Tampa Bay and second straight with Mayfield under center.

There is something to be said about maintaining some continuity in the system with a quarterback who is playing the best football of his career, and that is exactly what the Buccaneers did with this move.

In a surprising turn of events, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly promoted Josh Grizzard to the position of offensive coordinator following Liam Coen’s departure to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Grizzard, who previously served as the team’s quarterbacks coach, has been with the Buccaneers for several years and is known for his innovative offensive schemes.

This move comes after Coen accepted the head coaching position with the Jaguars, leaving a void in the Buccaneers’ coaching staff. Grizzard has been praised for his work with star quarterback Tom Brady and is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team’s offense.

Fans are eager to see how Grizzard’s promotion will impact the Buccaneers’ performance on the field, especially as they look to defend their Super Bowl title. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Transfer window weekly: Nkunku pushing for Chelsea exit; Tel eyes Premier League move

The transfer window is open across Europe as clubs look to do some midseason business. But what are ESPN’s reporters hearing about possible deals?

Every Friday in January, we’ll bring you the latest updates and insights on the biggest transfer news.

Will Christopher Nkunku be at Chelsea on Feb. 4?

Nkunku is determined to leave Chelsea in the next few days. The France international forward is not happy about being a fringe player for Enzo Maresca’s team, where he features mostly as a starter in the UEFA Conference League. He has told the Blues’ hierarchy that he wants to find a new project, and the club are not against letting him leave if their valuation is matched. However, they want to recoup the €60m they spent to sign him from RB Leipzig just 18 months ago.

The former PSG player would be happy to stay in England or go back to Germany. And sources said that Manchester United have asked to be kept informed of developments in case Alejandro Garnacho departs. — Julien Laurens

Meanwhile, Chelsea are close to reaching an agreement to sign 16-year-old Corinthians left-back Denner, but due to FIFA rules, he could only make the transfer to England after he turns 18. — ESPN Brasil

Could one of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Tottenham or Villa land a late move for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel?

Yes. Bayern Munich director Max Eberl has confirmed that the 19-year-old Tel wants to leave and said: “I’ve rarely had so many clubs call me about a player before.” But although Chelsea have made a lot of the early running, Tottenham feel they have an opportunity to win the race by offering a clearer path to regular first-team football and had a €60m offer accepted on Thursday night. The player has yet to make a decision though and personal terms have not been reached.

Sources said that Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ligue 1 side Marseille are also interested — although United must focus on outgoings first — while it remains unclear if Arsenal pivot away from their pursuit of Villa striker Ollie Watkins. If they do, Tel will be one alternative. — James Olley

After telling Bayern that he wanted to stay, Tel has changed his mind and has opened the door to a departure before the deadline as he has become frustrated by his lack of game time this season. Bayern want €60m for a permanent deal but are hoping that a bidding war breaks out between interested clubs; Tel wants to move to England and join a team where he will play regularly — ideally one that is in the Champions League.

Currently, Tottenham are leading the way but are not in a strong position considering their poor league performance. United have been in talks with Bayern and Tel’s agent for two days, but the club has to find an exit for Marcus Rashford first, and time is running out.

Tel could be Arsenal’s second option if they don’t manage to sign Watkins, while, as James says, Chelsea were the first club to get in touch about the player early in this transfer window and could yet move if Nkunku is allowed to depart. — Laurens

Which players could leave Man United before the deadline?

Man United would consider offers to sign midfielder Christian Eriksen and defender Victor Lindelöf before the deadline, but that’s optimistic because they will both be free agents this summer. Casemiro, 32, is available, and United are willing to sanction a straight loan while paying a portion of his wages. However, the Brazilian hasn’t shown much desire to go this month, and he already rejected a move to Roma, which means it would take a good offer to get things moving.

Young striker Rasmus Højlund is another interesting situation. He’s not playing well, but many clubs are looking for a striker on loan. United, however, could not afford to let Antony (who has already signed for Real Betis on loan), Rashford and Højlund leave without bringing in a replacement. — Rob Dawson

    And what about Rashford?

Man United want him out and Rashford wants to play, but this has now become a game of poker. Will United drop their financial demands or will Rashford agree to take a pay cut to move to another club? It’s likely either will need to happen if he’s going to go before the deadline.

It’s possible that this one will go right to the wire on Monday. Which side is going to blink first? — Dawson

Why Marcotti thinks Arsenal should go for Vlahovic over Watkins

Gabriele Marcotti believes that Arsenal should target Dusan Vlahovic instead of Ollie Watkins after they tabled a bid for the English striker.

Is Man City’s business over for January?

They hope not. The possibility that midfielder Douglas Luiz could be allowed to leave Juventus has got City boss Pep Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain interested. City would be keen on a loan for Luiz — who used to play for the club 2017-19, but he didn’t make a first-team appearance until the end of the season with an option to make it permanent. Juventus have suggested they want a permanent move now or an obligation to sign permanently in the summer.

As right-back Kyle Walker has left for Milan, there’s also interest in Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso, whose transfer is valued at around €80m, but that might have to wait until the summer.

One thing that could be of interest is the fact that Al Nassr have a delegation based in London ahead of the SPL deadline on Friday night and one of the players being discussed is City midfielder Mateo Kovacic. As of Thursday evening, City had yet to receive contact from the Saudi club, r but informal enquiries have been made to Kovacic’s representatives. It’s a hard deal to do but one to keep an eye on. — Dawson

James McAtee is likely to stay at City this month because the club is unable to loan him out of the country. City have already used their full allocation of six loans and cannot sanction another, so unless Bayer Leverkusen are prepared to make a significant offer to sign him permanently rather than on loan, he will be staying at the Etihad. — Mark Ogden

Tottenham are struggling in the league, will they sign anyone?

Ange Postecoglou certainly wants them to, but oddly, that is part of the problem. Postecoglou has a very specific style of play and wants players to fit that system, but the 59-year-old is under mounting pressure after a dismal run of results has left Spurs in 15th place in the Premier League. So do Spurs back a manager they may have to sack in the coming weeks? Or do they hedge their bets in the final few days of the window, either keeping their powder dry as players return from injury or sign a player the club feels is better suited to their future plans with one eye on life after Postecoglou? Either way, there is surely a consensus that the forward line needs strengthening and they’ve had that €60m bid for Tel accepted, although it remains to be seen if he wants to move to Spurs.

Central midfield has long needed more guile, hence the interest in Lille‘s Angel Gomes. Chairman Daniel Levy has long held a reputation for doing business late in the window, and here we are again. — Olley

With only six months remaining on his contract at Lille, Gomes is attracting a lot of interest from the Premier League. At 24, the former Manchester United academy graduate wants to come home. He has been great with Lille in the last four seasons, playing in the Champions League and making his England debut. Tottenham are keen to sign him, like West Ham and Everton, but this one is probably more for the summer transfer window than the final days of January. — Laurens

Is Ricardo Pepi the answer to West Ham’s striker struggles?

Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens discuss USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi’s reported move to Premier League side West Ham.

Any other interesting deals in the works?

    – Brighton striker Evan Ferguson is the subject of interest from Bournemouth, West Ham, Everton and Bayer Leverkusen heading into the final days of the transfer window, with sources telling ESPN that the Republic of Ireland international could yet leave the Amex Stadium in a permanent deal. Sources said that a move to German Bundesliga would appeal to the 20-year-old, due to the success of a number of young players doing the same in recent years, but Brighton are open to a loan or a permanent transfer. — Ogden

    – Chelsea defender Axel Disasi wants to go to Aston Villa and the club has received an offer for a loan with no option to sign permanently. The discussions are continuing, but all parties are optimistic a deal will happen. — Laurens

Newcastle United have been looking closely at Real Sociedad winger Take Kubo, but the Spanish club won’t let him leave this month. — Rodri Faez

    – Atlanta United is closing in on the acquisition of Middlesbrough striker Latte Lath, and is prepared to break the record for an incoming transfer to MLS in order to get the $22m (plus add-ons) deal over the line. — Jeff Carlisle

    – Former U.S. international forward Matthew Hoppe is set to sign with Danish side Sonderskjye, a source has confirmed to ESPN after Transfermarkt initially broke the news. Capped eight times for the U.S., Hoppe had been on the books of English Championship side Middlesbrough, but had his contract terminated by mutual consent earlier this month. — Carlisle

Napoli want to sign PSV Eindhoven forward Noa Lang. The Italian club have offered a fee of €25m, but PSV do not want to let the 25-year-old go and instead are looking to bring in a left-back themselves, following Matteo Dams‘ departure to the United Arab Emirates. — ESPN NL

    – Feyenoord do not want to let Mexico striker Santiago Giménez leave the club this month. But AC Milan are interested and are reported to be preparing a €35m offer for the 23-year-old. — ESPN NL

    – Ajax are looking to bring in a left winger, but they might already have the perfect option. Carlos Forbs, who is on loan at Wolves and has made just one start and nine appearances overall in the Premier League, is in talks over an early return to Amsterdam. — ESPN NL

    – Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, who has previously played for Liverpool, Barcelona and Fiorentina, is one of the main targets for Santos after they announced the return of Neymar, but is set to move to Girona. — ESPN Brasi

    – Botafogo and Cruzeiro are both looking to hire a new coach. For Botafogo, Vasco Matos (Santa Clara) is an option, while there have been rumors about former Barcelona and Inter Miami boss Gerardo Martino and ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid coach Rafael Benítez that have not advanced. For Cruzeiro, Renato Gaúcho (formerly of Grêmio) has been tipped to replace Fernando Diniz. — ESPN Brasil

    – Flamengo are trying to reach an agreement to sign Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, after closing a move for Juventus defender Danilo.ESPN Brasil

    – Palmeiras striker Rony has seen a move to Qatari side Al Rayyan collapse, while Palmeiras have not given up on the signing of Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira and will wait until Monday’s deadline day before restarting negotiations. — ESPN Brasil

    – Toluca are still looking to sign a goalkeeper after the surprise departure of Tiago Volpi, who decided to return to Brazil with Gremio for personal reasons. Sources told ESPN there is interest in Marseille goalkeeper Pau López, who is on loan at Girona of Spain. — Adriana Maldonado, ESPN Deportes

    – Boca Juniors have made an offer to sign Roma captain and midfielder Leandro Paredes, and are now waiting for a response. — ESPN Argentina

  • Savannah Guthrie Explains Why She Was ‘Shocked And Not Shocked’ By Hoda Kotb’s Exit From Today

Well, that’s it. After Hoda Kotb spent her final morning on Today last Friday, the beloved host will no longer show up on the 2025 TV schedule as a main co-anchor for the first time since she started in 2018. It has to feel especially odd for her longtime co-host Savannah Guthrie, but per the anchor, she wasn’t necessarily shocked Kotb made her decision.

As Guthrie welcomes a fresh partner in news with Craig Melvin as Hoda Kotb’s replacement, she recently reflected on the moment Hoda told her she was retiring. In her words to Parade:

I was shocked and not shocked. Hoda and I have talked for years about our dreams and part two of [our lives], and what it’s like to transition and be bold. I knew it was in her heart. She is as popular as ever. She’s as good as it gets. And she’s saying, No, I think I’ll go into the great unknown. And I find that so amazing. What I said to her right then and there, though, is that I’m going to set aside a moment for how I feel because to lose you is crushing.

Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s Today show, recently spoke out about her feelings regarding her colleague Hoda Kotb’s decision to leave the morning show. In a candid interview, Guthrie admitted that she was both “shocked and not shocked” by Kotb’s departure.

Guthrie explained that while she was saddened to see Kotb leave, she also understood her colleague’s desire to explore new opportunities and challenges. “Hoda is such a talented and driven individual, and I know she will excel in whatever she chooses to do next,” Guthrie said.

Despite her mixed emotions, Guthrie expressed gratitude for the time she and Kotb spent working together on Today. “Hoda has been an incredible partner and friend, and I will miss her presence on the show immensely,” Guthrie said. “But I know that this is not goodbye, just a see you later.”

Fans of the Today show can rest assured that Guthrie will continue to hold down the fort as one of the show’s main anchors. And while Kotb may be moving on to new opportunities, her impact on the show and its viewers will not be forgotten.

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test Season 3 Episode 6, “Terror and Brotherhood.”]

This season, the grueling Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test has already claimed half the recruits. With eight remaining going into Wednesday’s (January 29) episode, the Directing Staff (DS) took the famous faces even further out of their comfort zones with a focus on duty and resilience. The fourth week began with a search and hostage rescue course. During the simulated mission, their job was to save innocent civilians in mortal danger.

From there, the recruits faced a high-wire traverse followed by a dead hand over a 300-foot drop. Just when the exhausted group thought they were done for the day, the DS weren’t done. They endured a “bee sting” punishment after Christy Carlson Romano failed to maintain weight within her Burgen backpack earlier in the day. They were called into a muddy and wet obstacle course that ended with the shocking elimination of Carey Hart. The motocross legend was medically withdrawn from injuries to his ankle and wrist suffered during a fall.

The favorite wasn’t the only one who went home. During Day 8, a three-stage endurance test in mountainous terrain pushed actress Kyla Pratt to her breaking point. Fellow Disney Channel alum Romano followed not long after when it was decided she couldn’t keep up.

Here Hart opens up about what he got out of the experience, what his wife Pink thought of his efforts, and more.

    Carey Hart

    Pete Dadds / Fox

How frustrating was it for you to have been through all the other challenges and done so well, but then be taken out by that one obstacle course at the compound?

Carey Hart: It was definitely frustrating, but truthfully it was my own fault. You really have to pay attention to the details and information the DS gives you. As the show and challenges were going on, they got a little more complicated. I think a good example of that was the gas mask situation with Cam Newton. You think you’re going in this situation with this mask on, then throw you a curveball. Mask is off and you still have to complete your challenge. Where I screwed up and got hurt was the second or third circuit we had to do because it was the quickest eliminated.

Typically we would do two laps on that square around the compound and go back to the square. This time DS said for us to run it back again around the compound and back into the square, I didn’t pay attention that it was one lap. Me and most of the other people did two laps. Had I paid attention, I wouldn’t have been in that situation.

You talked about on the show how physically drained you were at this point. Do you think you would have been able to make it to the end had the injury not taken place?

Truthfully, I’m pretty stubborn. I have a pretty high suffering rate. I think, again I wasn’t in the moment, but I think I would have had it to make it to the end. Had it just been my wrist, because I tweaked my wrist when I hit the ground, and not the ankle? If it was just the wrist, I could have taped it up and moved on. As grueling as that whole program is, especially with the old ankle I have that is getting fused next year, I had to be smart and tap out.

What were those next days after like as you looked back?

Going into the show, I have so many injuries and issues with my body. And it’s all self-inflicted, so I don’t complain about it. I went there to take it day by day. Literally, there were five things that could have happened in the first two days that could have taken me out of the whole situation. I could have rolled an ankle on a rock hiking through one of the challenges. I was happy, but also obviously disappointed because I was so close to the end. I think it was like 48 hours left. I was really happy with my showing and how I held up through the whole program. I definitely left with my head held high.

How did your wife respond after you spoke to her following the medical withdrawal?

There was initially no communication, but she knew the length of the time of the show. I’m sure for her, in the back of her mind, if she heard from me any time before the tenth day, there would probably be an injury. I got injured about midnight that night. By the time I got back to my phone, it was like 2 or 3 a.m. I got her on FaceTime, her eyes are wide and face is kind of pale because she was waiting for me to tell her I have a bone sticking out. I let her off pretty easily as it was just a couple of sprains.

So she was more, “What? Just a few sprains. You can go back out there!”

She knows me. Normally, I would have pushed through, but in that situation, there was no way I could get through with an ankle injury.

How would you describe the dynamic of the group from your perspective? Anyone you are particularly close to now?

Honestly, it’s great. I think Cam Newton said it best that this was a trauma bond, especially with the last eight of us. We were really a solid group and created that trauma bond. We still have a group chat going. We all individually talk quite a bit. I would say I really connected well with Cam, Golden [Tate], Kyla, Kayla [Nicole], everybody. Actually, Brody [Jenner] is coming up tomorrow to ride some motocross with me at the house. I’m definitely keeping up with everybody.

    Special Forces Toughest Test

    Pete Dadds / Fox

This seems like such a physical and emotionally impactful show to be on. What do you think you got from this experience?

I think it was just how I can challenge myself. I didn’t have some romantic idea where I was searching for myself through this show. No disrespect to those who were doing those things for that reason. For me at age 48 and the professional career I’ve had, which isn’t your average career, I just wanted to feel that endorphin dump again. I wanted to feel that rush. For me, I accomplished what I wanted. Every day I was there was an accomplishment. I left with my head held high. It was a great experience.

What would you say was the hardest part of this, the mental or physical?

It was 100 percent mental. It wasn’t just so much in the challenges we had to do. The most mentally draining part for me was you just don’t know when the day is over. You can be completely soak and wet at 10 at night with your kit sitting at the edge of your bunk. You don’t know if you can put on dry clothes or if you’re going to get called back out again. That element of not knowing, you’re always idling at eight and willing to jump at 10.

Is there someone in mind from your circle you think would be good to go through this?

I can think of 50 people, but it would be hard to say one person. I think it would be good for someone who wants to compare themselves to that world of people. You are kind of control your own life and control your own career path. A lot of times you have someone work with you or for you. To relinquish all your power and name where you’re just a number, to have to just fall in and give a hundred percent no matter what, it’s a pretty humbling and eye-opening experience. There are a lot of benefits that can come up from this.

What’s next for you now that you’ve had this experience? Are you looking to tackle any more reality TV?

For me, that was truly for the experience. When I was younger, I dipped a toe into the reality TV world with the show about my tattoo shop and some other things. I saw this as just the challenge to test my old body. I still compete. I still do motocross. I still do freestyle motocross at a very old age, but still do it and build these Indian motorcycles I have. This is going to be a great experience for me because now when I go to rallies and press things, it will give people something new to talk about versus my first backflip and old stuff from my motocross career.

What is the future of this sport in your eyes?

I think the sky’s the limit. I think the athletes are getting that much better and much more intense. I think the promotions are really good. I think what is being done in Supercross is awesome. The sky’s the limit. I hope to see it continue to grow. It’s a machine heavily dependent on sponsor dollars, but I think with the viewership the races are getting now, I hope the sport grows. It’s fun. I just took my family to Anaheim too for Supercross over the weekend. It’s fun being a fan again and not a team owner.

Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, Wednesdays, 8/7c, Fox

In a recent interview, former contestant on the reality TV show “World’s Toughest Test” opened up about their shocking exit from the competition. The contestant, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that they had to leave the show due to a serious injury sustained during a grueling challenge.

The contestant explained that they had been determined to push through the pain and continue competing, but ultimately had to bow out for their own safety. They expressed disappointment at having to leave the competition, but acknowledged that their health had to come first.

Despite their early exit, the contestant had nothing but praise for the intense challenges and high stakes of the show. They described the experience as incredibly challenging but also extremely rewarding, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to test their limits in such a unique and demanding environment.

Fans of “World’s Toughest Test” were shocked to see the contestant leave so suddenly, but many applauded their decision to prioritize their well-being. The contestant’s story serves as a reminder of the physical and mental toll that reality TV competitions can take on participants, and highlights the importance of listening to one’s body and knowing when to step back.

As the competition continues with fewer contestants, viewers can expect even more drama, intensity, and unexpected twists as the remaining recruits battle it out to be crowned the ultimate champion of the “World’s Toughest Test.”

  • Borussia Dortmund set to appoint Niko Kovac as head coach after Nuri Sahin exit

Borussia Dortmund are set to appoint Niko Kovac as their new head coach, with an agreement in place on a contract that will run through to 2026.

Formerly of Monaco, Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt, Kovac had been out of work since leaving Wolfsburg in March 2024.

The 53-year-old replaces Nuri Sahin, who was dismissed by Dortmund following a winless start to 2025, ending in a 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League a week ago.

Mike Tullberg, Dortmund’s under-19 coach, has been in temporary charge of the side since Sahin’s departure and will be on the touchline again for the Bundesliga game against Heidenheim this weekend, with Kovac likely to take training for the first time on Sunday.

Kovac will be joined by his brother, Robert, his long-time assistant and by analyst Filip Tapalovic, and immediately faces a tough task. Dortmund were aiming to break their winless run as they face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Dortmund are yet to win in the Bundesliga since the end of the winter break, sitting in 11th-placed in the league, 22 points behind leaders Bayern Munich, and six points adrift of fourth-placed Stuttgart, who occupy the final Champions League qualification place.

With Sahin gone, what next for Borussia Dortmund?

Kovac will add needed balance to Dortmund play

Kovac feels like a good contrast to Sahin. The Croatian did not play for Dortmund and is not loyal to their house style, meaning that some fans will treat him with suspicion. Given the events of the past few years and how obviously the side needs fresh ideas, both of those actually feel like strengths. His football has always been based, first and foremost, on a rigid and dependable defence, and that will be his priority upon taking charge at the Westfalenstadion.

Dortmund must become more balanced. They must attack more responsibly and without leaving themselves so exposed in transition. Kovac, who is a far more experienced coach than Sahin or Edin Terzic, should be able to deliver that improvement.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens. His second second at Wolfsburg did not go well and his time at Bayern Munich (2018-19), during which he found it difficult to wrangle a squad full of stars and egos, will also be fresh in the mind, even if he did win a Bundesliga-Pokal double in his first season.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

How Borussia Dortmund’s Yellow Wall became the envy of European football

But this is a different situation and Dortmund seem to be in need of a specific set of coaching attributes, which Kovac arguably possesses. He has a fine record in developing young players and identifying their best roles. At Monaco, he turned Aurelien Tchouameni into a holding midfielder, helping him towards that €100m transfer to Real Madrid. At Wolfsburg, he repeated that trick with Felix Nmecha, who is unavailable through injury for the next few months, but who he will now coach at Dortmund. He also converted Tottenham’s Micky Van der Ven from a full-back into a centre-back, and coached a young Omar Marmoush.

Do Dortmund currently have the talent to take advantage of that? Arguably not, but if Kovac can help some of the existing players to evolve — in particular Jamie Gittens, Nmecha, Karim Adeyemi, and Julen Duranville — while instituting some discipline, this could be a good match.

Borussia Dortmund is reportedly set to appoint Niko Kovac as their new head coach following the departure of Nuri Sahin. The former Bayern Munich boss is expected to bring his tactical knowledge and experience to the Bundesliga club, as they look to challenge for the top spot in the league.

Kovac has previously managed Eintracht Frankfurt and Croatia national team, and is known for his disciplined approach to coaching. His appointment is seen as a signal of intent from Dortmund, who are aiming to compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions.

Sahin’s exit from the club has paved the way for Kovac to take charge, with the midfielder opting to pursue a new challenge elsewhere. The 32-year-old has been a stalwart for Dortmund over the years, but now the club is looking to the future with Kovac at the helm.

Fans will be eagerly anticipating the official announcement of Kovac’s appointment, as they hope he can lead the team to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Gunners positioned to hijack Mathys Tel transfer as striker’s stance on Bayern Munich exit is made clear

The future of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel could be one of the biggest transfer stories of the next week, with Arsenal in a strong position amid competition from Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen.

The 19-year-old has decided he is ready to leave Bayern this window in a major U-turn, prompting a scramble for his signature from top clubs around Europe.

Chelsea have already been snubbed by Tel this window and we understand that the youngster still isn’t convinced a move to Stamford Bridge is best for his development.

Tel would need to be promised that he will start ahead of Nicolas Jackson, while Enzo Maresca has informed the Chelsea board that he wants a prolific striker. Tel doesn’t fit that profile yet, despite having world-class potential.

Tottenham are also trying to bring in a new striker and to cover for Dominic Solanke – a top priority for under-fire manager Ange Postecoglou.

Tel is on Spurs’ shortlist but sources suggest that if he isn’t convinced by Chelsea, it’s unlikely he’d be willing to join them either. Postecoglou has reiterated his need for reinforcements in the past week as so far Tottenham have only signed a new goalkeeper, leaving them incredibly short of options.

Tottenham have sounded out the conditions of a potential deal for Tel but sources are not convinced they hold the cards in the race, with Arsenal, Man Utd and Leverkusen also in the mix.

Arsenal, Man Utd also interested in Mathys Tel

Arsenal are also sign to sign a new striker before the window slams shut and are firmly in the race for Tel. Sources state that the Gunners have spoken with Bayern to understand the conditions of a deal.

Mikel Arteta is an admirer of Tel. He also had eyes for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, although reports suggest that Saudi club Al-Nassr are pushing to sign him.

We understand that Arsenal are in a good position in negotiations for Tel due to the fact they are in the Champions League and Premier League title race. Those close to Tel also believe that he could have a positive impact for the Gunners and make the striker position his own.

Man Utd also have Tel on their radar but need to get others off their wage bill before they can make any major moves. Casemiro is expected to move to the Saudi Pro League and they are trying to offload Marcus Rashford. The exits of both players could free up around £600,000 per week in wages.

Sources say that Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are another team to watch in the race for Tel as they look at replacements for Victor Boniface, who is close to joining Saudi side Al-Nassr, who, as mentioned, are also interested in Duran from Villa.

The final conditions of a move for Tel are yet to be decided by Bayern but as things stand, a loan looks most likely with an option to buy attached.

IN FOCUS: Who is Mathys Tel?

    By Ben Mattinson (2024)

Tel is a clinical finisher. The way he can get off shots so quickly with minimal backlift is so impressive.

As a finisher he doesn’t have any angle bias, he can get shots off on target even at the tightest angles and on his ‘weaker’ left foot. Tel’s ‘weak foot’ ability means he can take players on near the box on either foot and still shoot accurately. This only makes him more unpredictable and harder to mark.

The Frenchman’s ball-striking is so impressive. Shooting form distance, he strikes the ball with so much power that it’s tough to stop his shots. Even when in a one-on-one he loves to smash shots in rather than place them but also does so accurately.

Tel loves to make runs in behind the defence particularly between the opponent’s right-back and right-sided centre-back. It’s these areas as an inside forward where Tel shines as he explodes into space and powers a finish past the keeper.

Tel’s intelligent movement creates high-quality chances for himself and he just needs to play with someone who can consistently find him and he’ll score lots of goals. When playing as a striker he drifts to the left a lot so he can isolate defenders in 1v1 situations and beat them to cut inside on his right foot.

He’s a quick player but not lightning fast, he’s smart with where he runs though always looking to get through the defence.

One of his most impressive traits is his physical maturity. Tel has a compact frame with good physicality. When shoulder to shoulder with a defender he’s tough to muscle off the ball and shields the ball well with his body. Tel’s physicality means he’s got decent hold-up and back-to-goal play too as a striker.

Tel’s athleticism is impressive too. He’s really springy which allows him to escape challenges and get shots off quickly with a lot of power. But this power in his legs also gives Tel a good vertical jump to be an aerial threat too. He’s displayed good heading ability when the opportunity to has arisen.

Arsenal transfer quiz: Higher or lower?

Arsenal fans, get ready to celebrate! The Gunners are reportedly poised to swoop in and hijack Mathys Tel’s transfer to Bayern Munich. The young striker, who has been linked with a move to the German giants, has made it clear that he is open to a move to Arsenal.

With Tel’s stance on leaving Bayern Munich now public, Arsenal are in prime position to snatch up the promising talent. The Gunners are known for developing young players and providing them with opportunities to shine on the big stage.

If Arsenal can successfully secure Tel’s signature, it would be a major coup for the club and a significant boost to their attacking options. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting transfer saga! #Arsenal #MathysTel #TransferNews
