• Texans Part Ways With Team President Following Divisional Round Exit

The Houston Texans have parted ways with team president Greg Grissom following the franchise’s divisional round playoff exit at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“We want to thank Greg for his contributions to the organization,” Texans CEO Cal McNair said in a statement. “Since he became our president in 2021, Greg helped me implement numerous initatives to help our organization fearlessly evolve and grow in many ways, which we are thankful for. We wish Greg and his family all the best in the future. We will provide updates regarding the team’s next president in the coming days.”

“Leading the Houston Texans business operations has been the opportunity of a lifetime,” Grissom said. “After almost 25 years with the Texans, including the last four as president, I feel it’s the right time to embrace new challenges and opportunities. I want to thank Janice McNair and Cal McNair and Hannah McNair for their support and the opportunity to help lead this organization.”

Grissom had been a part of the Texans organization since 2002 and earned several promotions up to president throughout his two-plus decade run in Houston.

The Houston Texans have announced that they have parted ways with team president Jamey Rootes following their divisional round exit in the playoffs.

Rootes had been with the Texans for over 20 years, serving as the team’s president since 2019. His departure comes after the Texans fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs, marking another disappointing end to their season.

The decision to part ways with Rootes comes as the Texans look to make changes and move in a new direction following a tumultuous season that included the trade of star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and the firing of head coach Bill O’Brien.

The Texans have not yet announced who will be taking over as team president, but it is clear that changes are on the horizon for the franchise as they look to turn things around and build towards a brighter future.

  • Fears for mortgage market amid rumours of Santander’s UK exit

Santander ’s potential exit from the UK could have a major ripple effect on the mortgage market, experts have warned.

This us despite the bank signalling to consumers and staff that it will be staying put.

Executive chairman Ana Botin insisted “We love the UK” following reports in the Financial Times that Santander is reconsidering its presence in the country.

“It is a core market and will remain a core market for Santander,” she told a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos , Switzerland.

But news of the potential review raised concerns about how consumers could be affected should a major player decide to leave Britain’s high streets.

Douglas Grant, group chief executive of financial services group Manx Financial Group, said it would “deal a significant blow to competition within the banking sector, particularly in the mortgage market”.

“For a Government striving to ensure financial stability and address the housing shortage, such a move could prove highly detrimental,” he said.

Santander’s potential exit from the UK could have a major ripple effect on the mortgage market, experts have warned (Mike Egerton/PA) (PA Wire)

Santander UK, the international banking group’s UK subsidiary, is a prominent mortgage lender and recently cut rates on more than 70 mortgage products.

Experts said the move created more competitive rates for homeowners and could prompt rival lenders to improve their own offers in response.

But analysts for Jefferies said it is “not a secret” that Santander’s returns in the UK have been “below expectations for almost two decades”, leaving the subsidiary on a weaker footing than in other locations in Europe.

A potential crisis facing the motor finance sector also looms over the UK bank, which was forced to delay the publication of its financial results last year while it weighed up what the cost hit could be.

Santander eventually said it was setting aside some £295 million to cover potential compensation costs should a court rule that many customers were mis-sold car loans.

Credit ratings agency S&P Global Ratings identified Santander UK as one of the banks most affected by uncertainty over the issue, along with Lloyds.

Santander UK is said to be one of the banks most affected by uncertainty in the car finance market (Joe Giddens/PA) (PA Archive)

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves had sought to intervene in a court hearing over the car finance case, arguing that it could damage the industry and make it more difficult and expensive to take out loans.

An application submitted to the Supreme Court also said it could “generate a perception that regulation in the UK is uncertain”.

The Financial Times reported that one former Santander executive said it has “always been a possibility” that Ms Botin would decide to sell the UK ringfenced bank, partly as a result of frustrations over costs and regulation in the country.

A spokeswoman for Santander stressed that “the UK is a core market for Santander and this has not changed”.

The mortgage market is facing uncertainty as rumours swirl about Santander potentially exiting the UK market. With fears of a potential withdrawal from one of the largest mortgage lenders in the UK, many are left wondering what this could mean for borrowers and the housing market as a whole.

Santander has been a major player in the UK mortgage market, offering competitive rates and a wide range of products to borrowers. If they were to exit the market, it could have significant implications for those looking to secure a mortgage, as well as for the overall stability of the housing market.

While Santander has not confirmed these rumours, the mere speculation has already caused concern among industry experts and borrowers alike. With uncertainty looming over the future of the mortgage market, it is important for borrowers to stay informed and consider their options carefully.

As the situation develops, it will be crucial for borrowers to keep a close eye on any updates from Santander and other lenders in the market. In the meantime, it may also be wise to explore alternative mortgage options and seek advice from a financial advisor to ensure they are prepared for any potential changes in the market.

The potential exit of Santander from the UK mortgage market is a reminder of the fragile nature of the housing market and the importance of staying informed and prepared for any potential disruptions. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.

  • Jim Acosta ‘may exit’ CNN rather than accept move to graveyard shift

Jim Acosta is threatening to quit CNN rather than accept a reassigned time slot that would see him move from late mornings to the graveyard shift, according to a report.

Acosta’s days at CNN may be numbered as the former White House correspondent known for his combative coverage of President Trump could be heading for the exits rather than accept a move that would see him broadcast a nightly show starting at midnight, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Another CNN staffer told Fox News Digital that Acosta was “getting hosed.”

Jim Acosta’s days at CNN may be numbered after the network offered him a time slot that would have him broadcast his show starting at midnight. CNN

“Acosta is a talented broadcaster who could handle any slot on the network,” the unnamed staffer told Fox News Digital.

“The midnight thing is shocking [but] it is what it is.”

Mark Thompson, the CNN top boss, announced a lineup reshuffle that will see Wolf Blitzer move his “Situation Room” program from the early evenings to the mornings.

Blitzer will anchor his show alongside Pamela Brown, the network confirmed on Thursday. CNN also announced that it was laying off some 200 staffers as it transitions its focus away from its linear television operation to a more digital-centered news outlet.

The shift means that Acosta’s daily program, “CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta,” which airs weekdays at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, will be scrapped.

CNN boss Mark Thompson announced a lineup reshuffle that scrapped Acosta’s morning show. Getty Images for Warner Bros. Discovery

“We are in active discussions with Jim about a new time slot and will have more information to share soon,” a CNN spokesperson told The Post.

The proposed lineup shift was first reported last week by Oliver Darcy of the Status newsletter.

While Acosta’s move is widely perceived as a demotion given the fact that fewer people watch television in the midnight hour, a network source noted that a 12 a.m. Eastern Time show airs at 9 p.m. on the West Coast — which constitutes a prime time show in the Pacific time zone.

CNN announced on Thursday that it was laying off some 200 employees. REUTERS

If Acosta were to accept his reassignment, he could be broadcasting his show from Los Angeles, which would necessitate him and his family moving from their current home in Washington, DC, according to a network source.

The source added that the East Coast is just “one slice of CNN’s global audience” and that the media outlet is “not an Acela corridor network.”

“CNN is a global news organization that broadcasts around the world, which would need to be noted,” the source added.

The source told The Post that a move to Los Angeles is not a requirement and that Acosta could continue to broadcast from Washington, DC, if he chose to do that.

Acosta has gained a reputation as a pugnacious broadcaster after his stint as White House correspondent during the first Trump administration. AFP via Getty Images

The Post has sought comment from Acosta.

The network’s decision to move Acosta out of daytime is being perceived by some as a way to appease the Trump administration.

Earlier this week, Status reported that Thompson told his roster of journalists over the weekend that they ought to refrain from “expressing outrage” while covering the Trump inauguration.

Thompson is also reported to have told his staffers that they needed to be “fair-minded” when covering Trump.

Jim Acosta, the well-known journalist and Chief White House Correspondent for CNN, is reportedly considering leaving the network rather than accepting a move to the graveyard shift. According to sources close to Acosta, he is unhappy with the idea of being relegated to a less prominent time slot and is exploring other options.

Acosta has been a fixture on CNN for years, covering major political events and breaking news stories. His confrontational style and willingness to ask tough questions have made him a polarizing figure in the media landscape. However, it seems that even Acosta has his limits when it comes to his career trajectory.

While CNN has not officially confirmed Acosta’s potential departure or the reasons behind it, many speculate that the network’s recent restructuring and cost-cutting measures may be a factor. Acosta’s departure would undoubtedly be a loss for CNN, as he has been a key player in the network’s coverage of the Trump administration and other major political events.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Jim Acosta and his career, but one thing is for certain – his departure from CNN would be a major shake-up in the world of journalism.

Allen Media Group broadcast television station division Allen Media Broadcasting is rolling out a new format that will have local weather coverage powered by The Weather Channel across markets nationwide, based at The Weather Channel’s Atlanta headquarters. “We are one hundred percent committed to delivering next-level weather news to our local television stations 24/7,” said Tom O’Brien, President of Weather Group/The Weather Channel. The move means layoffs for many of AMG’s local TV station meteorologists, whose positions are being eliminated, reports TheDesk.

Norah O’Donnell’s last night anchoring “CBS Evening News” will be Thursday, January 23, one day earlier than had been previously announced. The date was shifted because CBS’ coverage of the PGA Farmer’s Insurance Open on January 24 will necessitate a West Coast-only broadcast of the news. • NFL News: John Spytek, Raiders Reportedly Finalizing GM Contract After Telesco Exit | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

TAMPA, FL - AUGUST 13: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Vice President of Player Personnel John Spytek watches the action on the field before the preseason game between the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 13, 2022 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Looking for a fresh start, the Las Vegas Raiders have landed on John Spytek to be their next general manager.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager is finalizing an agreement with the team.

    Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

John Spytek and Tom Brady both played at Michigan in 1999, then were together in Tampa when Brady led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title. Now they join forces again in Las Vegas. https://t.co/s8uKsj0KiW

This marks the second straight offseason the Raiders went through a search for a new head coach and general manager. Last year, they opted to retain Antonio Pierce as head coach after he had a successful stint in an interim role.

The Raiders surprised many by going with former Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco, who was fired by L.A. late in the 2023 season after a 63-21 loss to Vegas, to be their GM in 2024.

Neither decision wound up working out, as the Raiders finished last in the AFC West with a 4-13 record. Both Telesco and Pierce were fired by the team shortly after the end of the regular season.

The Athletic’s Tashan Reed noted the Raiders initially planned to keep Telesco, but the opportunity “to start with a clean slate” by having a new coach and GM on the same timeline proved to be appealing.

Even though the Telesco era was brief and largely unsuccessful, he did nail his only first-round pick by selecting Brock Bowers with the No. 13 selection in the 2024 draft. The 22-year-old became the fourth tight end in NFL history to earn All-Pro first-team honors as a rookie.

There aren’t many foundational pieces currently on the roster in Vegas, but Bowers is certainly one. Maxx Crosby could be another one, but he hasn’t sounded thrilled about the constant coach and front-office turnover.

It could also be more beneficial for Spytek to trade a player of immense value like Crosby, who could bring back multiple first-round picks, to accelerate the timeline of this latest rebuild.

Regardless of everything else the Raiders do, they have to figure out an answer at quarterback. They’re already in a difficult position playing in the same division as the Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid; Los Angeles Chargers with Justin Herbert and Jim Harbaugh; and Denver Broncos with Bo Nix and Sean Payton.

The Raiders have had seven different quarterbacks start a game since the 2022 season, including five over the past two years after releasing Derek Carr in February 2023.

Spytek has a difficult task ahead of him to get the Raiders back on track, but hopefully he will be given some time to at least see their plan through for an organization that has lacked stability for a long time.

The Raiders are getting someone with a wealth of NFL knowledge and experience to run their front office.

Spytek has been working in the league for 21 seasons since he was hired as an operations intern by the Detroit Lions in 2004. He’s had jobs with five different organizations ranging from an intern to pro scout to director of college scouting.

The most recent job for Spytek was as assistant general manager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past two seasons. He was in the Bucs front office when Tom Brady joined the team in 2020.

Fixing the Raiders is a monumental task, but Spytek has a strong track record of team building from his eight seasons with the Bucs.

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly finalizing a contract with John Spytek to become their new general manager after Tom Telesco’s exit. Spytek, who currently serves as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ director of player personnel, is expected to bring his expertise in talent evaluation and roster building to the Raiders.

This news comes after Telesco’s surprising departure from the Raiders, leaving the team in need of a new leader in the front office. Spytek’s potential hiring has generated a buzz among football fans and analysts, as he is regarded as a rising star in the NFL personnel world.

  • FBI Recruits S.W.A.T. Star as New Agent After Lisette Olivera’s Exit

New casting information has been revealed for FBI Season 7.

Per Deadline, Emily Alabi (S.W.A.T.) has been cast as a new character in the current seventh season of FBI. She will be playing a new agent who’s expected to be paired with John Boyd’s Stuart Scola after the character’s partner, Katherine Renee Kane’s Tiffany Wallace, left the series last year. Alabi will have a recurring role in Season 7, but if all goes well, she could be upped to series regular in Season 8.

FBI: International Season 4, Episode 8, “You’ll Never See It Coming,” is a rough outing for Wes Mitchell, Cameron Vo and viewers of the CBS series.

Alabi also had a small part on FBI: International, playing the character Natalie Rivers in a 2024 episode of the spinoff. She had a recurring role last year as Olivia Navarro on the TV series S.W.A.T., and she’s also known for playing Mahina in the Magnum P.I. reboot series. Her other TV roles include Joe Pickett, The Rookie, Runaways, Jane the Virgin, and Teen Wolf.

Will Emily Alabi Stick Around Longer Than Lisette Olivera?

This casting follows another new star exiting the series just as quickly as she arrived. Lisette Olivera had been cast as a series regular with her role of Syd Ortiz in Season 7, meant to replace the void left by Kane’s departure. Her run on the series would ultimately last a handful of episodes before it was revealed that she was exiting the show. This was reportedly due to creative concerns over the character “playing too young.”

‘Nothing Lasts Forever’: S.W.A.T. Star Addresses When the Series Will End After Getting Uncanceled Twice

Shemar Moore reveals how far they want S.W.A.T. to go beyond Season 8.

“Well, Scola can mesh well with everyone because he doesn’t like anyone, until he does,” Boyd previously told CinemaBlend about what could be coming next for Scola. “He doesn’t trust anyone, and he thinks everyone’s full of BS. No, I think what would be cool is for Scola to get the kind of partner that he doesn’t know he needs. [Those] are the funnest stories to tell, are the people that bring some side out of him that he didn’t know. Someone that challenges him, someone that teaches him, that he can learn from. You really, really need that trust on this show, you have to have a partner that you feel like you can really trust, and it’ll be interesting to build that back again someday.”

On new showrunner Mike Weiss and writer Aaron Ginsburg providing strong storylines for the show, the actor added, “It really has been [fresh]. I’ve just been so impressed with how they’ve been able to write. The storylines that they’ve thought of this season for Scola, I’ve just been really excited about, and interested too in the partnership stuff and the speed dating and people not working and the Goldilocks. It’s just been really fun. Everything they throw at me, I think is really cool.”

After the departure of Lisette Olivera, the FBI has announced a new addition to their team – none other than S.W.A.T. star Shemar Moore. The actor, known for his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson on the hit TV show, will be trading in his badge for a real one as he joins the ranks of the FBI.

Moore’s character on S.W.A.T. is a seasoned leader who is dedicated to serving and protecting his community, making him a perfect fit for the FBI. With his experience in playing a law enforcement officer on screen, Moore brings a unique perspective and skill set to the agency.

In a statement, FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed his excitement about Moore joining the team, saying, “We are thrilled to have Shemar Moore on board as a new agent. His dedication to justice and his commitment to making a difference align perfectly with the values of the FBI.”

Fans of S.W.A.T. need not worry, as Moore will continue to appear on the show while juggling his new role as an FBI agent. It seems that Moore is truly a man of many talents, and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the table in his new position. Congratulations to Shemar Moore on this exciting new chapter in his career!

  • Raiders next regime hiring could be accelerated after Lions’ early playoff exit

Tom Brady had on his Fox analyst hat as he called the divisional round matchup between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions on Saturday, but his mind quickly transitioned to his duties as Las Vegas Raiders minority owner following the Commanders’ 45-31 upset win.

The Raiders had already scheduled an in-person interview with Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark for their GM vacancy on Sunday, so Brady caught a flight from Detroit to Las Vegas to be there. The Raiders’ hiring committee is composed of controlling owner Mark Davis and four minority owners: Brady, Silver Lake co-CEO and managing partner Egon Durban, Discovery Land founder and chairman Michael Meldman and Knighthead International co-chairman Tom Wagner.

Newmark was hired by the Commanders in 2024 and played a key role in taking them from being a four-win team to a berth in the NFC Championship Game next week. He’s independently a qualified GM candidate, but him being the first GM candidate the Raiders interviewed in person stood out given his ties to Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who the Raiders virtually interviewed for their head coach vacancy on Jan. 10.

Before heading to Washington, Newmark spent 26 years in the Lions’ personnel department. That means he overlapped with Johnson from 2019 to 2023. He also worked alongside Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who the Raiders also interviewed virtually on Jan. 10, but Johnson is Las Vegas’ top candidate.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

How Tom Brady handled his ownership-analyst conflict on TV: Takeaways

Due to Detroit’s surprising early exit from the playoffs, the Raiders are allowed to bring Johnson in for an in-person interview as soon as Monday. The Raiders had in-person interviews last week with former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and former Commanders head coach Ron Rivera. Saleh and Rivera are minority candidates, so the Raiders have satisfied the Rooney Rule and are free to hire a head coach.

In addition to Newmark, the Raiders will have in-person interviews with New York Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown and Los Angeles Chargers assistant GM Chad Alexander on Monday. Brown and Alexander are both Black, so their interviews will also put the Raiders in compliance with the Rooney Rule at GM. While teams can’t hire coaches who are still in the postseason, executives are fair game. So, if they want to, the Raiders could hire Newmark next week even though the Commanders’ season is still going.

That puts the Raiders in position to move quickly when it comes to hiring their next GM and head coach. Newmark and Johnson are the clear front runners, and that potential pairing would give the Raiders the alignment they were seeking when they fired GM Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce earlier this month.

The big question that remains is whether Johnson would take the job. He also interviewed virtually with the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars on Jan. 10 and may want to interview with both teams in person before making a decision. It can’t be ruled out that he could decide to just return to Lions as their offensive coordinator, but the sense is he’s ready to make the leap to become a head coach.

If Johnson turns the Raiders down, they have alternatives. In addition to Carroll, Saleh, Rivera, Glenn and Johnson, they’ve also interviewed Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. They’ve also requested an interview with Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Carroll, who also interviewed with the Bears, is believed to be the Raiders’ backup option at head coach, according to league sources. He’s been an NFL head coach three times with the Jets (1994), New England Patriots (1997-1999) and Seahawks (2010-2023) and was also the head coach at USC from 2001 to 2009.

The Raiders hired Jed Hughes from search firm Korn Ferry to help coordinate their GM and head coach searches. Hughes helped place Carroll with the Seahawks in 2010, so there’s plenty of familiarity there. Carroll will turn 74 next season and would be the oldest head coach in NFL history if he returns to the sidelines, but the Super Bowl XLVIII champion has a strong resume and could still have something left in the tank.

The Raiders would likely turn to a different GM candidate if they hired Carroll, according to league sources. In addition to Newmark, Brown and Alexander, the Raiders also had virtual interviews with Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant GM John Spytek, Pittsburgh Steelers director of pro personnel Sheldon White and Green Bay Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan. The Raiders have options to pivot in case the pairing of Newmark and Johnson doesn’t come together.

Although the Raiders’ path forward at both GM and head coach remains unsettled, their timelines for both searches have clearly accelerated. The franchise’s fourth regime since 2021 could soon be in place.

The Las Vegas Raiders may be looking to expedite their search for a new head coach and general manager following the early playoff exit of the Detroit Lions. With Lions interim head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes both potential candidates for the Raiders’ vacancies, the team may want to move quickly to secure their top choices before they are scooped up by other teams.

The Lions’ quick exit from the playoffs could give the Raiders a head start in their search for new leadership, as they now have the opportunity to interview Campbell and Holmes sooner than expected. The early playoff exit may also serve as a wake-up call for the Raiders, prompting them to act swiftly in order to secure the best possible candidates for their open positions.

As the Raiders look to bounce back from a disappointing season, the hiring of a new head coach and general manager will be crucial in shaping the future of the franchise. With the Lions’ playoff exit potentially expediting the hiring process, Raiders fans can expect to see new leadership in place sooner rather than later.

  • Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions: Quarterback Jayden Daniels sends top seeds Detroit to playoff exit | NFL News

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels stunned top-seed Detroit Lions as the Commanders reached their first NFC title game in 33 years at Ford Field in Michigan.

Daniels threw for two touchdowns and fellow rookie Mike Sainristil had two interceptions – dazzling performances that sent the Lions to an early playoff exit.

The sixth-seeded Commanders (14-5) were nearly double-digit underdogs against the Super Bowl favourites (15-3), who doomed their chances of living up to expectations by turning the ball over five times.

Sainristil, who won a national title at Michigan last season, picked off his second pass on a trick play with receiver Jameson Williams throwing into coverage off a reverse in the fourth quarter.

Safety Quan Martin returned a pick 40 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to put Washington ahead 24-14.

Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff threw three picks and lost a fumble, turning it over three times in the ill-fated first half. He finished 23 of 40 for 313 yards with a touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta that gave the Lions their last lead midway through the second quarter.

Daniels finished with 299 yards passing and 51 yards rushing and became the second rookie quarterback to knock off a top-seeded team, joining Joe Flacco, who led Baltimore past Tennessee in 2009.

First-year coach Dan Quinn led Washington to its first playoff win in 19 years last week. The Commanders rallied past Tampa Bay for their sixth comeback win and fifth straight on the final play from scrimmage in regulation or overtime.

Washington outscored Detroit 28-14 in the second quarter – the highest-scoring quarter in NFL playoff history – to take a 31-21 lead at halftime.

Daniels had 242 yards passing in the first half, setting a rookie record one week after becoming the first rookie to lead his team in yards rushing and passing in a playoff win.

Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns while Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight receptions for 137 yards.

Goff fumbled in a collapsing pocket on third-and-1 from the Commanders 17 late in the first quarter and Washington took advantage.

Daniels converted a fourth-and-3 from the Detroit 9 to extend a drive capped by Robinson’s two-yard touchdown run.

Three snaps after Daniels’ touchdown throw to McLaurin, Goff overthrew his intended target and Martin intercepted it and took it to the end zone, putting the Commanders ahead 24-14. Goff took a hit from linebacker Frankie Luvu on the interception return and was evaluated for a concussion.

Detroit’s defense could not stop the Commanders all night, and Washington set a season-high in points.

The Lions started the second half strong, forcing Washington to punt for the first time and going 76 yards on 11 plays on the ensuing drive, capped by Gibbs’ eight-yard run for his second touchdown to make it 31-28.

Washington had a 15-play, 70-yard touchdown drive – extended by Detroit having 12 men on the field when facing fourth and Robinson’s second short touchdown run restored the Commanders’ 10-point lead.

    What’s next?

Washington will play the winner of Sunday’s Los Angeles Rams-Philadelphia Eagles game next Sunday on the road for a spot in the Super Bowl, live on Sky Sports NFL.

In a stunning upset, the Washington Commanders defeated the top-seeded Detroit Lions with a score of 45-31 in a thrilling playoff showdown. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was the star of the game, throwing for four touchdowns and leading his team to victory.

The Commanders came into the game as underdogs, but they quickly showed that they were not to be underestimated. Daniels was a force to be reckoned with, showcasing his skills and proving that he has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

The Lions, who had been dominant throughout the regular season, were unable to contain Daniels and the Commanders’ offense. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to overcome the deficit and ultimately fell short in their quest for a playoff win.

With this victory, the Commanders have punched their ticket to the next round of the playoffs, while the Lions are left to reflect on what went wrong. It was a tough loss for Detroit, but they can take solace in the fact that they had a successful season overall.

As for Washington, they will look to carry this momentum into their next game and continue their improbable playoff run. With Jayden Daniels leading the way, anything is possible for the Commanders. Stay tuned for more NFL news and updates as the playoffs continue to unfold.

  • Rory McIlroy makes weekend at Desert Classic but Rahm and Hovland exit | Golf

For a spell on Friday afternoon the organisers of the Dubai Desert Classic had cause for panic. Jon Rahm had already tumbled out of the tournament after 36 holes, Viktor Hovland was heading the same way and Rory McIlroy was dangerously close to the cut line. Not for the first time at the Emirates Club, McIlroy saved the day; a birdie at the 18th meant he survived for the weekend with three shots to spare. Given McIlroy’s specialism here – he is seeking a third win in a row – a deficit of nine to the leader, Ewen Ferguson, is unlikely to faze the Northern Irishman.

Rahm’s struggles on his first start of 2025 and debut in this tournament caused widespread shock. The Spaniard’s second round of 77, including two double bogeys, contrasted sharply with a 69 on Thursday. “Not the way you want to start the year,” the 2023 Masters champion admitted.

“But if there’s any positive side of it, it is the beginning of the year. There’s a lot of golf and a lot of months to look forward to. I have a pretty clear idea of what I need to work on. For these next two weeks, I will go home and try to get better.

“I wouldn’t say that there was anything that went well. No part of the game today was even average compared to what I would like to feel.”

Ten out of 10 for candour. Rahm also admirably refused to criticise anything about the event itself. Indeed he plans to return despite this early exit. “I absolutely love the golf course, absolutely love the setup,” he added. “There is nothing I could say that is bad about this tournament.

“You don’t usually see rough that long and thick outside of major championships. So I think it shows the test which is proper. If the schedule allows, I would like to be here next year and hopefully get some redemption.”

Jon Rahm said there was no part of his game he was happy with as he missed the cut. Photograph: Ali Haider/EPA

An ice-cold putter was largely responsible for McIlroy’s low-key round of 71. As he bogeyed the 15th to slide to minus two, there were some anxious glances. “They are really tricky,” said McIlroy of the greens. “There’s a lot of grain, a lot of grain going different ways, double breakers. I felt like I was hitting pretty good putts and burned a lot of edges. So I just have to keep trying to make committed strokes and make good reads. Hopefully, sooner or later they are going to drop.”

McIlroy will have the opportunity to make early headway on day three. Hovland’s 73 meant he departed at plus four. The Norwegian’s game clearly remains in a state of flux, which already raises questions over Ryder Cup participation later this year.

Ferguson finished with a flourish in fading light. The Dubai-based Scot hit an approach to the 18th that was bound for Sharjah before rebounding from a stand to within 5ft of the hole. An eagle followed, his 65 moving him one clear of Daniel Hillier at minus 12. Tyrrell Hatton lurks at eight under par.

Rory McIlroy makes the cut and advances to the weekend at the Desert Classic, while young stars Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland exit early. McIlroy, a four-time major champion, showed his experience and skill as he navigated the challenging course to secure his spot in the final rounds.

Meanwhile, Rahm and Hovland, two rising stars in the world of golf, were unable to make the cut and will be watching from the sidelines. Despite their early exit, both players have shown immense potential and are sure to bounce back in future tournaments.

As the action heats up at the Desert Classic, all eyes will be on McIlroy as he looks to make his mark and compete for the title. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting tournament.
