FCC authorizes Verizon and AST to test satellite to cell phone voice, full data and video applications
NEW YORK, Jan. 31, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, Verizon is pushing the boundaries of satellite and terrestrial telecommunications convergence. Satellites are no longer reserved for the extraordinary—they are woven into the everyday, and are being used to help connect and power customers’ lives.
A lot has changed since 2014 when Verizon’s famous test man roamed the country asking “Can you hear me now?” Now he’s back, and reaching the limits of space with the help of American icon and astronaut Buzz Aldrin. They’re partnering to show how America’s largest network just got better.
“Fifty-six years ago I was one of the select few that made it into Space and the first team to help America conquer the moon,” said Buzz Aldrin, General USAF, Doctor of Astronautics. “Back then, Space was the great unknown, and now we’ve never been closer to it. I can’t look up in the sky without seeing a satellite fly by. It’s remarkable to see how far the human race – and technology – has come.”
“It’s been 10 years since I last asked America “Can you hear me now?,” said Paul Marcarelli, the Original Verizon Test Man. “Back then dead zones were everywhere and it’s safe to say today they are only in the most remote places like the dark side of the moon. Verizon’s always been on a mission to give its customers the very best experience, anticipate their changing needs and drive innovation. Satellite is for sure the next frontier.”
Freedom to message anywhere with satellite-power.
Verizon engineers are relentlessly focused on providing the most reliable network experience for customers. Verizon’s network covers more than99% of where people live, work and play, leaving very few places throughout the country where customers can’t connect. With the addition of satellite back-up to Verizon’s already robust network, Verizon is making the largest network even better.Satellites play a crucial role in making connectivity with Verizon even more reliable, enabling text messaging in the few areas where traditional terrestrial-based cellular networks might not reach. Here’s how:
- Customers with select devices have access to satellite messaging features to enhance connectivity in areas without cellular coverage, allowing customers to send an emergency SOS message and provide their location.
- Verizon is collaborating with Skylo to make satellite messaging features and location detection available for customers with select Android devices.
- And recently, AST SpaceMobile and Verizon announced a strategic partnership with a commitment of
$100 million from Verizon, to provide direct-to-cellular AST SpaceMobile service when needed for Verizon customers. The combination of Verizon’s highly reliable terrestrial mobile network, use of the multi-operator 850 Mhz band and AST’s commercial satellite array in low Earth orbit, is planned to enable cellular consumers to stay connected wherever they are, anywhere in the continental United States.
This week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted AST Special Temporary Authority (STA) authorizing beta service in the United States. This approval enables AST SpaceMobile’s first five commercial BlueBird satellites, operating in low Earth orbit today, to test satellite connections with Verizon smartphones supporting voice, full data and video applications, and other native cellular capabilities, without the need of any specialized software or device support or update.
Satellites provide reliable service in emergency situations.
Verizon utilizes nearly 300 satellite-based portable network assets to ensure connectivity where fiber cables are unavailable or compromised. These assets provide temporary network access for first responders and in areas with limited permanent infrastructure, or for linking cell sites to the broader network when fiber cables are compromised due to power outages or physical damage.Satellite connections speed up delivery of service to customers in remote areas.
Verizon uses satellite connections as backhaul for cell sites in remote areas (like forests and mountain tops) where traditional wired connections like fiber are not yet available. Satellite connections can be set up quickly compared to laying fiber, particularly in areas with significant geographical or logistical barriers. This rapid deployment is a useful solution while fiber optics is being planned and deployed. This allows cell sites to be operational and provide service while waiting for the installation of a more robust and high-capacity connection.* “Largest network” based on total postpaid phone connections publicly reported by Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T during the third quarter of 2024.
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ) powers and empowers how its millions of customers live, work and play, delivering on their demand for mobility, reliable network connectivity and security. Headquartered in New York City, serving countries worldwide and nearly all of the Fortune 500, Verizon generated revenues of
$134.8 billion in 2024. Verizon’s world-class team never stops innovating to meet customers where they are today and equip them for the needs of tomorrow. Truth Social owner Trump Media expands into finance, may invest in bitcoin
CNN
—
Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group announced Wednesday it plans to expand into financial services and potentially buy bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Shares of Trump Media (DJT) spiked 15% in premarket trading on the news.
Trump Media said it plans to launch a fintech brand called Truth.Fi and to introduce investment vehicles. The push into fintech was telegraphed by a trademark application filed in November.
The company said its board of directors has also approved plans to diversify its cash holdings into exchange traded funds (ETFs), bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and crypto-related securities.
The moves by Trump Media, a company built on President Donald Trump’s brand, is likely to raise further conflict of interest concerns about Trump.
As president, Trump will preside over how the federal government will regulate cryptocurrencies and financial markets broadly.
Trump announced in December he transferred his dominant stake in Trump Media to a revocable trust of which he is the sole beneficiary. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is the sole trustee of the trust.
Former President Donald Trump’s media company, Trump Media, has announced its expansion into the world of finance. The company, which recently launched the social media platform Truth Social, is now looking to make a splash in the world of cryptocurrency.According to reports, Trump Media is considering investing in bitcoin, the world’s most popular digital currency. This move comes as no surprise, as Trump has been a vocal supporter of cryptocurrency in the past.
With the rise of bitcoin and other digital currencies in recent years, it seems only natural that Trump Media would want to get in on the action. Investing in bitcoin could be a smart move for the company, as the cryptocurrency has seen massive growth in value over the past few years.
While the details of Trump Media’s foray into finance are still unclear, one thing is certain: the company is not afraid to take risks. With its expansion into the world of finance, Trump Media is poised to make a big impact in the world of cryptocurrency.

FDA Expands Semaglutide Use for CV, Kidney Risks in T2D, CKD
Today the FDA announced that it had expanded semaglutide’s (Ozempic; Novo Nordisk) indications to include patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The move means the drug is the sole glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) approved for mitigating cardiovascular (CV) risks and kidney disease that has advanced—when added to standard care—in this patient population. This decision was informed by the FLOW (NCT03819153) phase 3b kidney outcomes trial, which found a correlation between once-weekly injections of semaglutide and a subsequently reduced risk of both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and adverse kidney outcomes.1
For the FLOW trial, those in the treatment group exhibited a statistically significant 24% risk decrease for multiple adverse kidney outcomes, including progressive and end-stage kidney disease, as well as a nearly 5% risk decrease for CVD-related death at 3 years compared with the placebo group. | image credit: cartoon – stock.adobe.com
“This approval for Ozempic allows us to more broadly address conditions within cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome, which affects millions of adults and could have serious consequences if left untreated,” Anna Windle, PhD, senior vice president, Clincal Development, Medicat & Regulatory Affairs, Novo Nordisk, said in a statement.
Semaglutide received its first FDA approval back in 2017; at the time, it was only indicated for T2D to improve patients’ glucose and was recommended alongside exercise and dietary modifications. By 2020, semaglutide’s indication was expanded to include patients with T2D and forms of heart disease to mitigate their risks for stroke, heart attack, other CV episodes, or death.
CKD poses an additional risk for patients with T2D, occurring in around 40% of this population, and can influence the likelihood of developing CV issues and individual mortality risks. Diabetes itself remains a primary driver of CKD. As the aging population is expected to grow, data project a rising incidence of diabetes that could, in turn, result in a greater rates of kidney failure and CKD.2
“A large portion of patients I treat experience serious kidney complications and comorbidities, with some even requiring dialysis. Today’s decision by the FDA offers hope for the millions of adults living with both conditions and provides an additional treatment option, representing a significant advancement for my patients,” Richard E. Pratley, MD, medical director, AdventHealth Diabetes Institute located in Orlando, Florida, noted in a statement.1
The FLOW phase 3b kidney outcomes trial compared the efficacy of semaglutide 1 mg with a placebo, with one of the primary outcomes of interest being achieving and sustaining at least a 50% reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as well as an eGFR less than 15 mL/min/1.73 m2. Outcomes related to CV or renal death, as well as chronic renal replacement therapy, were additional primary end points. The study population comprised 1767 adults with T2D and CKD in the semaglutide group and 1766 adults with T2D and CKD in the placebo group. Patients were featured from 28 countries, with the trial being conducted across an estimated 400 sites.
Those in the treatment group exhibited a statistically significant (P < .05) 24% risk decrease for multiple adverse kidney outcomes, including progressive and end-stage kidney disease, as well as a nearly 5% risk decrease for CVD-related death at 3 years compared with the placebo group.
“With this new indication, Ozempic stands out uniquely as the most broadly indicated GLP-1 RA in its class. We are proud to continue advancing innovations that will have a meaningful impact for this patient population, underscoring Novo Nordisk’s commitment to cardiometabolic care,” Wilde commented.

The FDA has recently expanded the use of semaglutide, a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, to also include reducing the risk of cardiovascular events and kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. This decision comes after the results of a large clinical trial showed that semaglutide significantly reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, as well as the progression of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
Semaglutide works by increasing insulin production in the body and decreasing the production of glucose in the liver, helping to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. In addition to its benefits for controlling blood sugar levels, semaglutide has now been shown to also reduce the risk of serious complications such as heart disease and kidney disease in these patients.
This expanded use of semaglutide provides a new treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease who are at risk for these serious complications. Patients should consult with their healthcare provider to determine if semaglutide is the right treatment option for them.

Singapore Airlines expands Seattle service with 5th weekly flight
From late May 2025, Singapore Airlines will launch a fifth weekly non-stop flight to Seattle, hiking capacity by 25% and finally fulfilling a long-awaited pre-COVID plan.
You have to cast your mind back over six years to recall the November 2018 announcement that Singapore Airlines was launching non-stop flights between Changi and “tech town” Seattle, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
The route officially debuted in September 2019 with three weekly (then four weekly flights) using Airbus A350 Long Haul aircraft, recording such impressive load factors that the airline quickly moved to increase its frequency to five times weekly from March 2020.
Unfortunately, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic cut those plans short, forcing the route’s complete suspension just six months after its launch, which at the time made it SIA’s shortest-lived passenger route ever (previous record holder Las Vegas had lasted eight months).
Fast forward to today, and Seattle is firmly back on Singapore Airlines’ network, with the carrier finally set to fulfil its long-awaited plan to operate five weekly non-stop flights from 2025 – over five years later than originally envisioned.
SIA’s Seattle route timeline
Here’s a recap of Seattle’s timeline on the Singapore Airlines network.
November 2018
- Singapore Airlines announces plans to launch non-stop flights between Singapore and Seattle.
September 2019
- The route begins with three weekly non-stop flights using Airbus A350 Long Haul aircraft, quickly increasing to four times weekly operation a month later, achieving strong load factors in excess of 95% in some months.
Late 2019
- Singapore Airlines adds a fifth weekly non-stop Seattle flight to its schedule, operating every Monday from March 2020.
March 2020
- Service is completely suspended as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts global travel, making Seattle the airline’s shortest-lived passenger route ever at the time.
Singapore Airlines inaugurated non-stop Seattle flights in September 2019, just six months before COVID-19 forced the route’s suspension.
(Photo: AirlineGeeks)2nd December 2021
- Flights resume as part of a Singapore – Vancouver – Seattle – Vancouver – Singapore routing, operating four times weekly, leveraging the newly launched Vancouver route, which was reinstated by SIA after an absence of over 12 years.
2nd June 2022
- Seattle flights are quickly de-linked from Vancouver, resuming as dedicated non-stop Singapore – Seattle – Singapore services, operating three times weekly.
2nd June 2024
- Seattle frequency is hiked to four times weekly. Vancouver flights had been abandoned seven months earlier.
30th May 2025
- Seattle service increases to five weekly flights, fulfilling SIA’s original plan from March 2020.

= Additional flightNote that this is not the same as SIA’s originally proposed increase to five times weekly operation on the route back in March 2020, which saw additional service on Mondays, instead of Fridays.
All flights on this route will continue to use SIA’s 253-seat three-class Airbus A350 Long Haul aircraft, configured as follows:
- 42 Business Class (2013 J)
- 24 Premium Economy Class (2013 PY)
- 187 Economy Class (2013 Y / 2017 Y)
SIA’s Seattle flights feature the airline’s popular 2013 Business Class seat.
(Photo: MainlyMiles)Singapore Airlines tends to prioritise its A350 Long Haul+ sub-variant on Seattle flights, since they have longer range than older aircraft in the fleet. These benefit from the latest 2017 Economy Class seats, rather than the older 2013 version seen on the carrier’s other A350 aircraft.
Overall, Singapore Airlines will operate 57 flights per week to and from the USA once this frequency increase for the Seattle route comes into effect, based on June 2025 schedules.
- Los Angeles: 17/wk
- New York: 14/wk
- Newark: 7/wk
- San Francisco: 14/wk
- Seattle: 5/wk
However, this is less than the 61 U.S. flights per week the airline is currently operating, because services to Houston will be axed from late March 2025.
SIA will operate 57 weekly flights between Singapore and the USA the summer, including 14 to and from San Francisco and five to and from Seattle.

Before the pandemic, Seattle was proving to be a big hit for Singapore Airlines with four times weekly flights recording up to 90% load factors.

COVID-19 put a stop to that early success of course, as the figures reflect from February 2020 onwards, but the airline must have been buoyed by the demand it was seeing to and from the U.S. “tech town”.
Seattle had already witnessed significant non-stop international flight expansion from other Asian carriers like ANA and Cathay Pacific in recent years, before the pandemic hit.
How has the performance been more recently? Well looking at the first 10 months of 2024, it’s certainly positive.

SIA is no doubt pleased with Seattle’s route performance, which has seen load factors over over 95% some months, hence the introduction of a fifth weekly connection later this year, which will increase seat capacity by 25% from 2,024 per week to 2,530 per week.
Cathay Pacific notably launched four weekly Hong Kong – Seattle flights in 2019, but has yet to resume the route post-pandemic. This delay potentially presents Singapore Airlines with an opportunity to capitalise on the reduced capacity between the Pacific Northwest and Asia caused by its Oneworld competitor’s prolonged absence.
Singapore Airlines also codeshares on a variety of flights operated by Seattle-based Alaska Airlines across the USA and Mexico, allowing connectivity to several destinations it does not serve directly.

Singapore Airlines is hiking its Seattle schedule Seattle from late May this year, with a capacity boost of 25% from a fifth weekly non-stop flight, fulfilling a pre-COVID plan delayed by several years by the pandemic.
With impressive passenger demand and consistently high load factors, the route continues to demonstrate strong potential and we wouldn’t be surprised to see further increases in future, particularly as competitors like Cathay Pacific continue to delay their return to Seattle.

Singapore Airlines, the flag carrier of Singapore, has announced that it will be expanding its service to Seattle with the addition of a fifth weekly flight. This move comes in response to the increasing demand for travel between Singapore and Seattle, as well as the growing popularity of the airline’s premium services. The new flight will operate on Wednesdays, adding to the existing four weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This additional frequency will provide more flexibility for travelers looking to fly between the two destinations, as well as offer more options for connecting flights to other destinations in Asia and beyond.
Singapore Airlines is known for its exceptional service, comfortable cabins, and top-notch amenities, making it a popular choice for travelers looking for a luxurious and seamless travel experience. Extreme drought expands into Los Angeles County – NBC Los Angeles
Extreme drought expanded into parts of Los Angeles County as a dry start to the wet season continues in fire-prone Southern California, according to this week’s U.S. Drought Monitor report.
Extreme drought, the second-most severe category in the weekly report, was limited to extreme southeast California last week, but parts of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties are under the category in the report released Thursday.
The California Drought Monitor map released Jan. 23, 2025. About 11 percent of California is in extreme drought. Thirty-three percent of the state, including northern Los Angeles County, is in severe drought.
At this time last year, no part of California was in extreme, severe or even moderate drought. About 39 percent of the state is in moderate drought with 67 percent considered abnormally dry. A large swath of Northern California, where storms have delivered rain and snow, does not fall under a drought category this week.
The report reflects a dry start to the wet season in Southern California.
“This year has been a very slow start for our water year,” said meteorologist Belen De Leon. “We are, right now, at the second-driest start to the water year.”
A red flag warning has been extended through 10 a.m. on Friday as strong winds blow ash and dust into the air. This video was broadcast on the NBC4 News at 4 a.m. on Jan. 23, 2025.
After two seasons of above-average rainfall, a months-long dry spell left hillsides covered in dry brush, providing fuel for wildfires fanned by powerful Santa Ana winds.
The average wet season rainfall at this time of year in downtown LA is about 14.25 inches. In the 2022-2023 wet season, the region had 28.40 inches of rain followed by 25.19 inches of rain in 2023-2024.
So far in this season, which extends from October to April, downtown LA has record 0.16 inches of rain.
Average rainfall for January, the second-wettest month of the year, is close to 4 inches. No rain has been recorded this month in downtown LA, but cooler temperatures and a slight chance for rain are in the weekend forecast.
“The abysmal start to the water year continues over much of southern California, southern Nevada and Utah, and into Arizona and New Mexico,” according to the Drought Monitor report. “Most of the managed water systems are fine in the region after two consecutive wet winters, but the short-term drought indicators for the current water year are highlighting the significant short-term drought in the Southwest into southern California. Degradation to drought status continued this week with drought expanding and intensifying over much of southern California.”
Extreme Drought Conditions Worsen in Los Angeles County – NBC Los AngelesAs the devastating effects of climate change continue to unfold, Los Angeles County finds itself grappling with an alarming new reality – extreme drought conditions. According to recent reports, the region is now facing its most severe drought in decades, with water supplies dwindling and wildfires raging out of control.
The situation has become so dire that officials are warning residents to conserve water at all costs, with mandatory restrictions on outdoor watering and other non-essential uses. In addition, the dry conditions have heightened the risk of wildfires, prompting evacuations in several areas and putting homes and lives at risk.
Experts are pointing to climate change as a major factor in the worsening drought, with rising temperatures and reduced rainfall leading to decreased water availability. However, they also stress the importance of individual action in mitigating the impacts of the crisis, urging residents to do their part in conserving water and reducing their carbon footprint.
As Los Angeles County grapples with this unprecedented challenge, it is clear that urgent action is needed to address the root causes of the drought and ensure a sustainable future for the region. Only by coming together and taking meaningful steps to protect our environment can we hope to overcome this crisis and build a more resilient and secure future for all.
