Cooper University Health Care in Camden held a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday for a 10-story, $650 million patient tower that is expected to open in 2028. The tower is the first phase of what is expected to be a $3 billion expansion of the Camden nonprofit health-care provider.
Backhoes are already on site preparing to lay the foundation for the new building, which will have 125 private patient rooms, labor and delivery rooms, a neonatal intensive-care unit, and operating rooms. New Jersey is providing $170 million to help pay for it.
“I’m proud to say we’ve put up a big chunk of what will ultimately be a $3 billion expansion, because we know that this hospital can continue meeting the region’s growing needs,” Gov. Phil Murphy said during the event at Cooper. Murphy was joined on stage by four former governors.
The new building, the first of three anticipated facilities with up to 745 patient beds, will rise next to Cooper’s Roberts Pavilion and will be connected to the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper via a pedestrian bridge over Haddon Avenue, Cooper said.
Cooper currently has 663 beds in Camden. It also owns the 242-bed Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional in Cape May Court House, near the Jersey Shore.
Cooper had $2.2 billion in revenue and $163 million in operating income in 2023.
When Cooper announced the expansion in September 2022, the cost of the 10-year project was estimated at $2 billion. The increased to $3 billion was caused by increased costs and changes in the scope of project, a Cooper spokesperson said.
Less than two miles from the site of Cooper’s new building, Virtua Health is planning to build a $490 million patient tower at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. The two projects will add to the already intense competition for patients in South Jersey.

Trump Media and Technology Group announced Wednesday that it is expanding into financial services, including investment vehicles.
Shares of the Truth Social parent company, which trade under the ticker DJT, jumped more than 15% in premarket trading.
The financial services division will be known as Truth.Fi, and it will be started with up to $250 million from the company that will be custodied with Charles Schwab, according to the press release. That money will be allocated to customized exchange traded funds and cryptocurrencies, among other investment vehicles.
The company said it expects to launch products and services, including its own investment vehicles, later this year.
“Truth.Fi is a natural expansion of the Truth Social movement. We began by creating a free-speech social media platform, added an ultra-fast TV streaming service, and now we’re moving into investment products and decentralized finance,” said TMTG CEO and Chairman Devin Nunes in the press release. “Developing American First investment vehicles is another step toward our goal of creating a robust ecosystem through which American patriots can protect themselves from the ever-present threat of cancellation, censorship, debanking, and privacy violations committed by Big Tech and woke corporations.”
The announcement comes after complaints from Republicans that banks have treated some conservatives unfairly. During a remote appearance last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump complained to Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan that the firm was locking out and de-banking conservatives.
“I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives because many conservatives complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business within the bank, and that included a place called Bank of America,” Trump said.
The president also took on Jamie Dimon, CEO at JPMorgan Chase, the largest U.S. bank by assets.
“You and Jamie and everybody, I hope you’re going to open your banks to conservatives because what you’re doing is wrong,” Trump said.
The remarks continued a simmering feud between Republicans and the nation’s largest banks, with a flashpoint coming last year when a group of state attorneys general filed a complaint alleging that the institutions were discriminating against customers based on religious and political affiliations. First and foremost, Space-Time Smackdown appears to include a Mewtwo ex killer in the form of Weavile ex. Pokémon TCG Pocket’s competitive meta is still dominated by Mewtwo ex decks despite the steady release of new cards, but Weavile ex’s ability to start doing decent, weakness-exploiting damage as early as turn two should be a boon for taking down opponents who rely on Psychic-type Pokémon. Dark-type decks are currently dependent on tricky strategies involving poison damage, so Weavile ex should also go a long way toward shaking that up.
If you’re as fond of damaging your fellow Pokémon TCG Pocket players psychologically as I am, we have a great new card for trolling: Porygon-Z. It’s a beefy boy with good damage-dealing potential, but things get real tasty with its one attack’s ability to randomly change the type of energy the opponent generates during their next turn. Missing out on even a single useful energy can be devastating in a game as quick and simple as Pokémon TCG Pocket, and I look forward to ruining at least one person’s day with this card even if it doesn’t always translate to wins.
Bidoof makes a spectacular Pokémon TCG Pocket debut with Super Fang which, if you’re familiar with the video games, halves the opposing Pokémon’s HP. This will have diminishing returns, of course, and Bidoof won’t be the bulkiest Pokémon in your deck by a long shot, but imagine reducing cards like Pikachu ex and Gyrados ex to 60 and 90 HP respectively with just two energy.
And finally, the rich get richer with the introduction of a new type of card, Pokémon Tools, specifically the card Rocky Helmet. A lot of decks still use Druddigon, with its 100 HP and retaliatory damage, as a way to tank hits while they evolve and build energy on benched Pokémon. Rocky Helmet gives any card a similar ability, but attaching it to Druddigon means it will deal a whopping 40 damage every time the opposing Pokémon hits it with an attack. I foresee a lot of decks either keeping Druddigon around for the foreseeable future or finding a way to include at least one because fighting against it is going to be annoying as heck.
It’s an exciting time for Pokémon TCG Pocket, both for collectors and folks who take the battle mod seriously, and I can’t wait to see what new strategies players figure out when Space-Time Smackdown releases to the public.

5.0City Council votes down Sheetz expansion in Livonia
LIVONIA, Mich. (WXYZ) — Livonia residents made their voices heard during a city council meeting. The topic: a 24-hour Sheetz Gas Station and convenience store.
In a final 5-2 vote, Livonia City Council denied a zoning change for the proposed Sheetz at the corner of Eight Mile and Newburgh.
Some people at the meeting supported the zoning change, while many more, spoke out against it.

“The fact is, we don’t need something that is going to bring high traffic,” one fed-up resident said.

“Sheetz, I think, brings up the value of the gas stations in your community. I think now, our gas stations are going to have to come up to their standards,” another resident said.

There were mixed reaction from residents and elected officials about allowing Sheetz to come. It would’ve rep[laced two small local businesses and a vacated building.
Sheetz plans to open 50-60 locations in Southeast Michigan over the next six years. They say 13 communities have already said yes, including Romulus, which became Michigan’s first location last August.

Livonia City Council votes down Sheetz expansion, blocking new location on 8 Mile Road
LIVONIA, Mich. – The Sheetz expansion into Metro Detroit hit another roadblock as the Livonia City Council voted down a rezoning ordinance for a new location.
The vote took place on Monday (Jan. 27) for the new proposed gas station, which would have been on 8 Mile and Newburgh roads where the former Rite Aid once stood.
Residents who lived nearby and independent gas station owners drew concerns about the potential Sheetz expansion.
“What we noticed is it’s cannibalizing from existing gas station owners,” said a woman. “The Livona residence refers to it as a truck stop, even though it’s not a truck stop because of the size and because of the way it’s being implemented; they refer to it as the truck stop that they don’t want in their neighborhood.”
The proposed location was only about eight miles away from another proposed Sheetz location in Farmington Hills, which their city council rejected earlier this month.
“I just think your proposal at this time is not compatible to our location,” said a city council member.
Residents spoke during the public comment section, citing concerns about noise, pollution, and possible crime the 24-hour location might bring.
“What I prefer a Sheetz to do is go up north to where some of our rural Michiganders are because they need economic development, and they need jobs up there,” said a resident.
Livonia City Council seemed to agree and voted down the proposal. If they had agreed for the Sheetz gas station, the area in question near the Whispering Willows Golf Course, it would have ended the city’s plan to dedicate the area to parks and recreation.
