Bayern Munich are aware of the ferocious welcome they will receive from Feyenoord’s famous fans in Wednesday’s Champions League game, but still believe they can leave De Kuip with three points.

“We have a very experienced team. This is a special away game. As ever, we want to win and put in a performance,” coach Vincent Kompany told a news conference on Tuesday. “I think the atmosphere will motivate us.”

Bayern are looking to lift themselves into the top eight, who qualify automatically for the last 16 without a play-off.

“I don’t look at the table. I’ve enjoyed this new format. There’s no point looking at the table. If you win six games, you’re in the top eight. Anything else is hard to predict, but my aim is to make sure we win six games.”

Bayern have won four so far and have a home game next Wednesday against eliminated Slovan Bratislava when the league phase wraps up.

Jamal Musiala, whom Bayern hope will sign a new contract soon, said they would not underestimate the Dutch side.

“We’ve had meetings about Feyenoord already. They’re good on the counter and have talent and quality. They want to play football and they can make things happen with the ball. We’re approaching it like every game – all of us will work hard,” Musiala said.

“A few buddies of mine who have played here before have said that it’ll be very loud here. But we look forward to that.”

Feyenoord coach Brian Priske earlier told a news conference: “It’s a difficult phase but it’s another opportunity to get a result. I love Feyenoord and I love playing against top clubs. It’s nice for me to be here, where so many expectations are placed on me.”

Feyenoord striker Santiago Giménez added: “Our counter-attacking play will be key. They’re good in possession, no matter who they play against. We need to be ready to battle and run.”

Bayern Munich are gearing up for a tough away fixture against Feyenoord in the Champions League, and they are expecting a special atmosphere at the iconic De Kuip stadium. The Dutch fans are known for their passionate support, and the players are looking forward to the challenge of playing in such a hostile environment.

However, Bayern are not just there to soak in the atmosphere – they are eyeing a win to continue their strong start to the Champions League campaign. The German giants have been in excellent form this season, and they will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record in Europe.

With their star-studded squad and experienced manager, Bayern are confident that they have what it takes to come away with all three points. But they know that they will have to be at their best to overcome a tough Feyenoord side.

The players are ready for the challenge and are determined to put on a show for the fans, both home and away. It promises to be an exciting match, and Bayern will be hoping to come out on top in what is sure to be a thrilling encounter.

  • Expect a Trump-driven ‘policy fog’ to overshadow a strong corporate earnings season

Fourth quarter earnings season is off to a strong start. Unfortunately, that may not matter much for the stock market.

Many equity strategists anticipate a solid earnings season for companies in the S&P 500 (^GSPC) to take a back seat in the coming weeks as investors dissect President Donald Trump’s return to the Oval Office and his first slew of executive orders.

“Right now, earnings are almost the undercurrent of the stock market, and policy is taking center stage,” Ritholtz Wealth Management chief markets strategist Callie Cox told Yahoo Finance.

Cox pointed to Tuesday’s market action as a prime example of Trump’s policies serving as the key market driver at the moment. In the first full day of trading under the new Trump presidency, the US dollar index (DX=F, DX-Y.NYB) saw its worst one-day drop in a year, falling more than 1% after Trump didn’t take a major tariff action on his first day in office.

Subsequently, stocks rallied. Industrials (XLI) and Materials (XLB), which are considered areas of the market that would benefit from a weaker greenback, were among the top-performing sectors and jumped on the dollar weakness.

The Trump trade boosted tech stocks in midday trading too. A report that Trump would announce a $500 billion investment in private-sector artificial intelligence infrastructure sent Oracle (ORCL) shares more than 6% higher.

The sum of the market action shows that, for now, investors are squarely focused on whether Trump will or will not keep his campaign promises.

Under the surface, the fundamental story for stocks has been humming along. Thus far, 43 companies in the S&P 500 have reported, led by many large banks, and results have been better than expected. FactSet data shows the S&P 500 is now pacing for 12.5% year-over-year earnings growth this quarter compared to the 11.5% expected last week. It would mark the best quarter for S&P 500 earnings growth in more than three years.

Stocks have been rewarded for beats more than they normally are too, according to data from Bank of America Securities equity strategy team. Companies that beat analysts’ estimates on both sales and earnings per share have seen their stocks outperform the S&P 500 by 3.34% the following trading day, well above the historical average of 1.5%.

But Citi US equity strategist Scott Chronert noted that the positive earnings vibe might not be what lifts markets in the coming weeks.

“Short term, markets will have to contend with building fiscal, trade, and monetary policy uncertainty, even if [earnings] reports are solid,” Chronert wrote in a note to clients on Friday.

The stock market is gearing up for a busy earnings season, with many companies expected to report strong financial results. However, investors may find it challenging to focus on corporate earnings as a cloud of uncertainty and volatility looms overhead.

President Donald Trump’s unpredictable and often controversial policy decisions have the potential to overshadow even the most impressive earnings reports. From trade tensions with China to the ongoing government shutdown, Trump’s actions can create a sense of uncertainty and unease in the market.

As a result, investors should prepare for a “policy fog” to descend over the stock market, obscuring the positive impact of strong corporate earnings. This fog may lead to increased market volatility and make it difficult for investors to accurately gauge the health of individual companies.

Despite this potential distraction, it’s important for investors to stay focused on the fundamentals of the companies in which they are invested. While Trump-driven policy uncertainties may create short-term challenges, strong earnings and solid business fundamentals will ultimately drive long-term success in the stock market.

In conclusion, while the upcoming earnings season may be overshadowed by Trump-driven policy uncertainties, investors should remain focused on the underlying strength of the companies in which they are invested. By staying informed and maintaining a long-term perspective, investors can navigate through the policy fog and position themselves for success in the stock market.

  • Samsung’s Galaxy S25 event: what to expect and how to watch

Samsung is set to announce its Galaxy S25 phones at its Galaxy Unpacked event tomorrow, January 22nd, at 1PM ET. The event typically focuses on its next smartphones and software features, which you can bet includes lots of AI, but there should be other things here and there, too. Here’s what we’re expecting and how you can watch along.

Samsung will stream the event on YouTube, its website, and its newsroom page, and we’ll post about the announcements as they happen right here on The Verge.

We expect the company to reveal the Galaxy S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra. It sounds like we’re getting more of the same with those phones, except for the S25 Ultra, which is expected to receive design tweaks like slightly rounder corners. That’s at least according to a preview in a set of leaked renders that hit the internet last week. The company has said its 2025 Galaxy devices will have Qi2 wireless charging support, but it’s possible that only means they’re “Qi2 Ready” phones that need a magnetic case to get the full MagSafe-like experience.

The phones will run Samsung’s tweaked version of Android 15, One UI 7, which launched in beta last month with features like an iPhone Dynamic Island-like “Now Bar,” a redesigned camera app, and the ability to disable HDR content to avoid being ambushed by overly bright videos in your social feeds. The company said yesterday that One UI 7 “seamlessly integrates AI agents and multimodal capabilities into every touch point.” Expect more along those lines during the event.

It seems unlikely Samsung will unveil a Galaxy S25 “Slim” phone. A recent leak suggested the phone won’t launch in the US. There’s also a chance the company will talk more about the “Project Moohan” VR headset my colleague Victoria Song previewed in December.

Samsung’s highly anticipated Galaxy S25 event is just around the corner, and tech enthusiasts all over the world are buzzing with excitement. With rumors swirling about groundbreaking features and cutting-edge technology, here’s what you can expect from the event and how you can watch it live.

    What to Expect:
    1. Revolutionary Camera Technology: Samsung is known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to smartphone cameras, and the Galaxy S25 is expected to be no different. Rumors suggest that the device will feature a groundbreaking camera setup with improved low-light performance, enhanced zoom capabilities, and advanced AI features.

    2. Next-Gen Display: The Galaxy S25 is rumored to come with a stunning display that offers an immersive viewing experience. Expect vibrant colors, sharp details, and smooth scrolling for a truly next-level visual experience.

    3. Powerful Performance: Samsung’s Galaxy S series is known for its top-notch performance, and the Galaxy S25 is expected to be no different. With a powerful processor, ample RAM, and smooth performance, the device is sure to impress even the most demanding users.

    4. Enhanced Security: Samsung has always prioritized user security, and the Galaxy S25 is expected to come with enhanced security features such as improved facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, and secure biometric authentication.

    How to Watch:
The Galaxy S25 event will be live-streamed on Samsung’s official website and YouTube channel. To watch the event live, simply visit Samsung’s website or YouTube channel at the scheduled time of the event. The event is set to take place on [date and time], so mark your calendars and get ready to witness the unveiling of Samsung’s latest flagship device.

Don’t miss out on the excitement and stay tuned for all the latest updates and announcements from Samsung’s Galaxy S25 event. Get ready to experience the future of smartphones with the Galaxy S25.

  • What to expect at Davos 2025

Welcome back to our annual Need to Know: Davos newsletter!

The global elite are dusting off their snow boots for the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland (this Monday through Friday), where “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age” isn’t just a fancy theme — it’s a loaded proposition for what might be one of the most consequential gatherings in years. This year, however, the Swiss mountains are competing with another summit altogether: Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington.

The elephant in the (virtual) room: Just days after his inauguration on Monday, Trump on Thursday will address Davos via a video link in what WEF President and CEO Borge Brende says will be a “very special moment.” But the real story might be who won’t be in Davos. Tech leaders including Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Dara Khosrowshahi are choosing the D.C. swamp over the Alps. Meanwhile, Wall Street remains committed to Davos, with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and other banking executives rumored to be sticking to their usual Swiss schedules.

While some tech leaders are heading to Washington, Davos isn’t exactly hurting for attendees. The Swiss gathering will host 60 heads of state and government, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and China’s Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang. For the second year in a row, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will make a special address about the Russian invasion of his country.

On the business side, more than 900 CEOs will be navigating the Congress Centre’s corridors, including what WEF said will include a notable contingent of unicorn founders and tech pioneers. They’ll be tackling an agenda heavy on “frontier technologies” and quantum computing — even if some of Silicon Valley’s biggest names will be missing.

The Forum is also pushing its “Global Collaboration Village,” an extended reality platform that feels either perfectly timed for an era of virtual diplomacy or like a solution in search of a problem (we’ll be watching to see which).

Some of the topics that will take center stage:

“Agentic AI” is having its moment: Forget last year’s theoretical AI discussions. OpenAI’s Sam Altman says 2025 is when AI agents will actually join the workforce, and the company is launching its “Operator” product this month.

The talent crisis is getting real: Japan just hit a sobering milestone with 30% of its population now elderly. Several Davos sessions focus on “talent scarcity” and “reinventing retirement” — signals that demographic shifts are no longer a future problem. Could AI agents help? You better believe they’ll be pitched.

A $30 trillion reality check: That’s the investment needed to get “hard-to-abate” sectors (think shipping, aviation, and steel) to net-zero emissions. These industries represent 40% of global emissions, and while everyone will talk about the opportunity, the funding gap remains stark. In this instance, the chance AI could be helpful actually has some decent evidence.

The big, perennial question: Can a gathering that’s often criticized as an elite talking shop actually make progress on what WEF’s founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab calls a “societal revolution”? With converging technologies “reshaping the very fabric of our world” (his words, not ours), this year’s Alpine gathering might matter more than the skeptics think.

The full program can be found here, with many of the sessions being streamed live. We’ll be watching closely and bringing you the most important developments. Stay tuned.

P.S. At least one person is trying to have it all: Argentina’s President Javier Milei plans to attend both Trump’s inauguration and Davos. Now that’s what we call global collaboration.

    —Jackie Snow

  • Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 isn’t the self-serious medieval sim you might expect

An open-world RPG set in medieval Bohemia, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 takes a slower-paced, down-to-earth, yet occasionally more humorous approach than many of its contemporaries. It’s at its best when protagonist Henry, the lowborn son of a blacksmith and a permanent fish out of water, steps off the beaten path to observe and converse with the game’s mammoth cast, many of whom have a strange story to tell, a bone to pick, or a harebrained scheme to rope you into.

The 2018 original was rightly praised for its sim elements and confidence in the player to get to grips with its often obtuse RPG systems, but I remember it most fondly for its side adventures and the characters you meet therein. Getting drunk with Father Godwin, investigating a coven of ‘witches,’ messing with a public execution, and giving an impromptu – and in my case disastrous – sermon, KCD remained consistently varied throughout its sprawling runtime. The series is far from the self-serious medieval sim you might expect, and after spending the past week exploring the length and breadth of the sequel’s first map, I’m pleased to say Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is packed with the same personality, sense of danger, and bouts of screwball mania that made its predecessor sing.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 preview: a rural medieval home and a man standing outside of it.

I won’t be getting into its linear opener or general setup here, so if you’d like to familiarise yourself with the basics, you can always check out my first hands-on preview from last year. For my final preview, I’ll focus on some of what happens when you’re eventually let loose in the open world, including light spoilers for an early-game side quest.

KCD 2 has a propensity to surprise without ever growing so expectedly unexpected as to become inadvertently predictable. Early on, I encounter a group of Cuman army deserters at a small-town tavern. The locals are fearful of the armed band, and Henry is immediately suspicious given the murder of his parents at the hands of Cuman soldiers some months ago. Sure enough, tensions rise and the scene erupts into a brawl, leading the outsiders to leave before the violence escalates from drunken punches to stabbing and slashing. It’s not over yet though, as one of the locals implores me to track down the group and deal with them once and for all.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 preview: scenic view of several rural homes and a wagon caravan trekking over a dirt road.

With murder on my mind and a newly sharpened blade in hand, I make inquiries into their whereabouts and soon happen upon their camp, but I find their sole Czech-speaking member to be warm, welcoming, and surprisingly keen to share a drink, comfort Henry over the loss of his parents, and urge him not to dwell on the past. He, however, seems keen to avoid discussing the raid on Henry’s hometown. Now tipsy enough to feel a possibly false sense of security, I hear another of the Cumans has a crush on a nomad living in a nearby camp, so I offer to interpret for him as he seeks to confess his love to her. Within roughly thirty minutes, we’ve gone from a bar brawl to a cross-country manhunt to a conversation about Henry’s loss, potentially with several of the men responsible, to an enjoyably silly exchange involving two would-be lovers who don’t have a clue what the other is saying. It should be jarring, but I buy it.

Regrettably, my low charisma stat brought on by a recent stint in the stocks and my being covered in dirt result in some drunken stomping on any possible romantic flame. The mounting embarrassment transcends the language barrier and Romeo calls time on my efforts by punching me in the face, sending me back to my new Cuman pal with my tail between my legs. Yet that’s not even half of what unfolds across an evening always teetering on the brink of disaster.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 preview: Henry in the stocks.

There are more bumps and enjoyable detours in some KCD 2 side quests than most RPGs can muster in a dozen hours of play, and that’s before you consider the possibility of emergent events punctuating the script. But it works because it’s often authored and convincing, even as it oscillates from toilet humor to traumatic violence.

It also works because Henry is a permanent outsider protagonist who never quite fits in with the peasantry, gentry, or nobility. His alienation is heightened even further now that he’s away from home and, due to a series of early-game blunders, traveling alone while flat broke. You seldom know how people will take you, and they can turn on a dime if they believe you’ve stepped ever so slightly out of line. “You really don’t know your place,” says an otherwise amiable lord when I ask if an invite to his son’s wedding is on the cards after going to great lengths to impress and help him.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 preview: a bandit interrogating a prisoner.

I’ve spent hours now seeking out side stories, not as part of a desire to grind levels or improve my gear but to spend more time getting to know this world and its odd, irritable, kind, and occasionally dangerous people. I wish to hear their concerns and aspirations, how they pass the time, or perhaps their plans to paint a neighboring town’s prized white bull a different color.

I’m over 25 hours in, and it feels like there could be another 80 still to come given the scope of the emerging narrative and the fact there’s a whole other map I’m yet to see. The thought of committing that much time to most other open-world games would typically repel me, but KCD 2 has earned my attention for the long haul. I can’t imagine fans of the first will find it to be anything less than great, and those coming to the series for the first time will – if you’re willing to work with it – find a charming and ambitious RPG quite unlike anything else out there. Roll on the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 release date, February 4.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: A Surprisingly Light-hearted Sequel

Fans of the original Kingdom Come Deliverance might be surprised to learn that the upcoming sequel isn’t quite the self-serious medieval simulator they might have been expecting. While the first game was praised for its historical accuracy and attention to detail, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 takes a slightly more lighthearted approach.

Gone are the days of meticulously managing your hunger, fatigue, and hygiene levels. Instead, players will find themselves embarking on more whimsical adventures, such as participating in jousting tournaments, rescuing damsels in distress, and even embarking on a quest to find the legendary Holy Grail.

But fear not, fans of the original game – Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 still retains its immersive open-world setting and rich storytelling. Players will still have the opportunity to explore the beautiful landscapes of medieval Bohemia, interact with a diverse cast of characters, and make important moral choices that will impact the outcome of the game.

So if you’re looking for a medieval RPG that doesn’t take itself too seriously, keep an eye out for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. It’s sure to be a rollicking good time!

If the $3,125 EMA level holds, ETH could extend the recovery to test its daily resistance level at $3,730.

However, the RSI indicator on the daily chart reads 46, below its neutral level of 50, but points upwards, indicating weakness in bearish momentum. Additionally, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator is about to flip a bullish crossover. If the MACD line closes above the signal line, it would give a buy signal and suggest an uptrend.

On the other hand, if ETH closes below the 200-day EMA at $3,125, it could extend the decline to test its psychological importance level of $3,000.

Ripple bulls could aim for the symmetrical triangle target at $3.63

Ripple price retested its upper symmetrical triangle boundary at the start of the previous week and rallied 30.48% until Friday. However, it faced rejection around the $3.30 level on Saturday and declined 10.14% until Sunday. At the time of writing on Monday, it trades slightly above around $3.13.

If XRP continues its upward momentum, it could extend the rally to test its technical target obtained by this pattern, which would be $3.63.

The RSI indicator reads 65, above its neutral value of 50 and points upwards, indicating bullish momentum. Additionally, the MACD shows a bullish crossover, suggesting a continuation of an upward trend.

Conversely, if XRP closes below the $1.96 daily support level, it would extend the decline to retest its next support level at $1.40.

    Bitcoin, altcoins, stablecoins FAQs

Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, a virtual currency designed to serve as money. This form of payment cannot be controlled by any one person, group, or entity, which eliminates the need for third-party participation during financial transactions.

Altcoins are any cryptocurrency apart from Bitcoin, but some also regard Ethereum as a non-altcoin because it is from these two cryptocurrencies that forking happens. If this is true, then Litecoin is the first altcoin, forked from the Bitcoin protocol and, therefore, an “improved” version of it.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to have a stable price, with their value backed by a reserve of the asset it represents. To achieve this, the value of any one stablecoin is pegged to a commodity or financial instrument, such as the US Dollar (USD), with its supply regulated by an algorithm or demand. The main goal of stablecoins is to provide an on/off-ramp for investors willing to trade and invest in cryptocurrencies. Stablecoins also allow investors to store value since cryptocurrencies, in general, are subject to volatility.

Bitcoin dominance is the ratio of Bitcoin’s market capitalization to the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies combined. It provides a clear picture of Bitcoin’s interest among investors. A high BTC dominance typically happens before and during a bull run, in which investors resort to investing in relatively stable and high market capitalization cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. A drop in BTC dominance usually means that investors are moving their capital and/or profits to altcoins in a quest for higher returns, which usually triggers an explosion of altcoin rallies.

As President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office, the cryptocurrency market is bracing for potential volatility ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th. Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Ripple (XRP) are all expected to experience fluctuations in the coming days as investors react to the changing political landscape.

Bitcoin, the largest and most well-known cryptocurrency, has been on a tear in recent months, reaching new all-time highs above $40,000. However, with a new administration set to take office, some investors may be wary of potential regulatory changes that could impact the digital currency market.

Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, has also seen significant price gains in recent weeks, climbing to over $1,200. The upcoming inauguration could bring about uncertainty that may lead to increased volatility in the ETH market.

Ripple, the third-largest cryptocurrency, has faced challenges in recent months due to an ongoing lawsuit with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The outcome of this legal battle could have a significant impact on XRP’s price and market position.

Overall, traders and investors in the cryptocurrency market should be prepared for potential price swings in BTC, ETH, and XRP as the inauguration approaches. It’s always important to stay informed and monitor market trends in order to make informed decisions about buying, selling, or holding onto digital assets during times of uncertainty.

  • What fashion-watchers expect from Melania Trump’s second term as FLOTUS

    CNN
     —

It’s one of the most important jobs never applied for. Unelected, yet inextricable from politics; constantly visible on the world stage, but rarely the one behind the microphone — for all its glamour, the first lady of the United States is a role of unsolicited duty, often bringing with it intense public scrutiny, including over what they wear.

For previous first ladies, fashion has been an important communication tool signposting what they stand for individually. Michelle Obama — who could transform a designer’s career with a single photograph — used clothes as a vehicle to platform and support diversity in the fashion world. During former President Barack Obama’s term, she diligently wore looks by up-and-coming talents such as Jason Wu, Fe Noel, Jonathan Simkhai, Pyer Moss as well as Isabel Toledo (the Cuban-American designer became a household name after she created Obama’s 2009 inauguration dress). And though Dr. Jill Biden has reached for more traditional labels in the last four years — Oscar de la Renta, Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren, to name a few — symbolism was, at times, literally stitched into her outfits. During her husband’s inauguration concert in 2021, Biden wore a custom Gabriela Hearst gown embroidered with federal flowers from every state and territory of the US.

After four years of relative anonymity, Trump's wardrobe sparked conversation again when she arrived at the state funeral for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on January 9 wearing a black Valentino dress and oversized collar.

Melania Trump, who will soon resume her post as first lady, has yet to follow suit on such sartorial storytelling. During President-elect Donald Trump’s first term, the Slovenian-born former model arrived perfectly coiffed and statuesque in her vertiginous Louboutin stilettos and tailored Christian Dior skirt suits. But there was seemingly little narrative depth to her wardrobe choices, aside from a few eyebrow-raising exceptions: the fuchsia pussybow blouse she wore just days after her husbands’ controversial comments about groping women (from a 2005 tape) came to light, or the “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” Zara jacket worn to visit an immigrant children’s shelter on the US-Mexico border. (She later clarified the phrase was a message to the leftwing media).

In October 2016, days after her husband's comments about
During a visit to an immigrant children's shelter on the US-Mexico border in 2018, Trump's Zara jacket raised eyebrows for its inflammatory message.

And while many first ladies have made a point of wearing American-made looks, Trump appeared to worship at the altar of European luxury in Valentino, Versace and Chanel. She even wore a black tuxedo jacket from Dolce & Gabbana for her official first lady portrait. Despite her husband’s mantra at the time being “Buy American, Hire American,” Trump was rarely seen in anything homegrown after her sky-blue Ralph Lauren inauguration outfit. It was baffling, and to some, disrespectful. “I believe that if you are (associated with) an elected official and if you are representing American workers, then you should give that a high priority in your decisions about what to buy,” said New York-based designer Nina McLemore, whose designs have been worn by Hillary Clinton and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “Whether she likes it or not, she has a responsibility. And that is to represent the constituency that elected her (husband).”

Though how much choice Melania had in the matter is up for debate. Dressing the first lady is a career-defining achievement most American labels can only dream of. But the former president’s divisive politics meant the outwardly liberal-leaning fashion industry often kept his wife at arm’s length. Independent designer Sophie Theallet, whose clothes were worn regularly by Obama, wrote an open letter in 2016 refusing to “dress or associate in any way with the next first lady.” Marc Jacobs told WWD he had “no interest” in working with Trump, while Christian Siriano echoed that, as a gay man, he couldn’t “support a campaign where I might not have the same rights.” Instead, Trump often turned to off-the-rack Net-a-Porter pieces she had bought herself, according to Kate Bennett, CNN’s former White House correspondent and author of the 2019 biography “Free, Melania.”

“Melania was coming off (the back of) Michelle Obama, who really viewed fashion as an art form,” Bennett said in a phone call. “She was also lacking the backbone of what the industry wanted to reflect, which was not, quite frankly, the policies of her husband.”

Eight years later, where does the fashion industry stand on her? The question is met with a wall of silence. Several top American designers — including Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors and Hearst — who have each dressed at least one first lady, did not reply to CNN’s request for comment on whether they would be open to working with Trump. Ralph Lauren, who recently received the presidential medal of freedom from the Biden administration and made her first inauguration coat in 2017, also did not respond. However, a spokesperson for Oscar de la Renta’s eponymous label — whose designs have been worn by every presidential wife since Jackie Kennedy — said over email that the brand is “always honored when asked to dress the first lady of the United States,” adding that its mission is to “make her look and feel her best regardless of politics.” And smaller, emerging designers may be more enthusiastic about dressing the incoming first lady, but Bennett speculates “that’s not really interesting” to Trump.

Trump opted for a Christian Dior skirt suit while accompanying President-elect Donald Trump and their son Baron at the Palm Beach Convention Center on election night last November.

Of course, the incoming first lady can wear whomever she wants, regardless of whether the labels actively participate in sourcing, styling or designing outfits for her. With or without the help of US designers, there’s no doubt she strives to look her best — with the Washington Post’s fashion writer Rachel Tashjian noting last April that the incoming first lady “dresses more like a woman who enjoys a good afternoon at Neiman Marcus.”

“She’s driven by the beauty of clothes,” said Bennett, who added that Trump probably won’t amp up the soft-power messaging during her husband’s second term. “She’s into what she likes, what looks good, what her taste is… When I talk to people in Washington, they’re like, ‘Oh, I’m so glad fashion is coming back. No matter what you think about (Donald Trump), I can’t wait to see (Melania Trump’s) outfits.’”

Even if the elusive ”American-made” fashion houses were to start lining up at the White House, Bennett believes it might be a case of too little, too late. “I think everything is partisan. Even fashion. Should that be the case? I don’t know. It’s not for me to decide, but no one experienced that more than Melania Trump,” Bennett said. “She has a long memory. She’ll remember the people who supported her and she’ll remember the ones who didn’t.”

But the designer McLemore — who said she would “absolutely” dress Trump if the opportunity arose — suggested that the first lady might do well to consider the symbolism of her clothing this time around. “It’s a fine line between dressing the way you see yourself and your personality, and understanding that you are, in fact, on stage and wearing a costume,” McLemore said.

Her penchant for European luxury was reaffirmed with this black asymmetric Versace gown, worn to a New Year's Eve party at Mar-a-Lago.

Nichola D. Gutgold, a professor and member-at-large of the First Ladies Association for Research and Education (FLARE) — a university-affiliated initiative examining the impact and legacies of first ladies — predicts we might simply see her less. In November, CNN reported that Trump, who was notably absent from the campaign trail, is unlikely to move to the White House full time. “She is very aloof,” Gutgold said over Zoom. “I think (events) will be carefully chosen and the schedule will be much lighter. And maybe she won’t need as large a wardrobe as a very active first lady.”

    A triple standard

It’s no secret that the president’s wife faces a particular type of double standard: their appearance is dissected under a microscope, while their husbands’ often non-descript tailoring is often taken at face value. “I suspect when we elect a woman president of the United States, the first gentleman is not going to be tortured too much over the kind of suit he wears,” said Gutgold.

Throughout history, first ladies have struggled to please everybody with their outfit choices — no matter the decade or political party. “I remember Nancy Reagan getting into trouble because she had very expensive clothing,” said Gutgold. Rosalynn Carter similarly outraged designers when she chose to re-wear a dress to the late Jimmy Carter’s inauguration in 1977. “She (re)wore the dress she wore when her husband was inaugurated as the governor, because she loved it so much and was naturally very thrifty. But that sent American designers into a tailspin,” Gutgold added.

Even Jackie Kennedy — who was celebrated for her ever-appropriate, timeless dress sense — sometimes eschewed the unwritten mandate of wearing American apparel. “She recognized that there needed to (be) some fashion diplomacy,” said Gutgold, “and chose more American designers, but I would say not always. The day her husband was assassinated, as we sadly all remember, she had a pink Chanel suit on.”

In Trump’s case, the double standard intensifies by one more degree. “She’s beautiful and dresses in a high fashion way,” said McLemore. “So people are going to comment on her, her clothes, no matter what.”

While on a trip to Egypt in 2018, the incoming first lady opted for an all-white Chanel pantsuit.
At the Republican National Convention in July, Trump re-wore a Christian Dior double-breasted, form-fitting skirt suit from her wardrobe.

Bennett agrees that Trump comes across as less relatable than other first ladies. While the press wrote fully priced round-ups of her costly outfits, Biden, was lauded for her down-to-Earth dress sense. “(Jill’s) taste is very expensive,” said Bennett. “But just because she’s Jill from Philly, and she wears it in a different way… But that’s still a $5,000 dress she’s wearing to an elementary school visit.”

Studying Trump’s image-making is, for better or worse, one of the few windows into the worldview of an otherwise impenetrable figure. With limited press access and few speeches to interpret, onlookers are forced to analyze her carefully curated exterior.

“It’s very hard for anybody who’s been with Donald Trump for 20-plus years to make their voice heard,” said Bennett. “The oxygen of the room is sucked out by the person next to you. You have to find another way to make people look, and I think she’s been very effective.”

Gutgold hopes that, one day, optics will matter less. “I think that it would be progress for the spouse of the president to express themselves as they wish,” she said. “But so much of American politics, of politics globally, is played out visually,” she added. “Many people around the world will have their TVs on (during) inauguration day. They might not even have the volume turned up, but they’ll be half-watching while they’re going on with their lives.”

“That’s one of the reasons why so much of this matters, because it’s going to be a global event. It’s the visual nature of our world.”

This article was updated to reflect when Donald Trump’s taped comments about groping women were made.

  • Detroit Lions depth chart: What to expect from David Montgomery’s return

ALLEN PARK — David Montgomery is set to rejoin Jahmyr Gibbs in the backfield at just the right time for the Detroit Lions as they face the Washington Commanders in the divisional round.

Montgomery’s return is the big talking point of the week, and we’ll examine what to expect from that and more in this week’s depth chart projection.

RELATED: The brilliance of Jahmyr Gibbs, and proving the Detroit Lions right

    Quarterbacks

    1. Jared Goff

    2. Hendon Hooker

    3. Teddy Bridgewater

Expect another inactive week as the third emergency quarterback for Teddy Bridgewater. He’s here as a strong presence in the locker room and to boost the depth at the game’s most premium position for a hopeful Super Bowl run.

    Running backs

    1A. Jahmyr Gibbs

    1B. David Montgomery

    3. Craig Reynolds

    4. Sione Vaki

Followers of our depth chart projections will see what I did there. But for those joining us for the first time, Gibbs and Montgomery’s places have swapped at the top. They are the truest and most productive one-two punch in the NFL. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the duo introduced together in Saturday’s starting lineups.

However, Gibbs is on a ridiculous run, with 487 total yards and six touchdowns in the three games Montgomery missed. Montgomery is playing for the first time in a month after dealing with what the team initially thought was a season-ending knee injury. But he’s been back in practice at full capacity all week.

It feels safe to assume Gibbs seeing more touches than usual with the duo both on the field. His performance and Montgomery’s injury make that even safer to assume. Still, Montgomery is a major contributor to this offense, and if he’s active and feeling himself, there is a meaty role for him, too.

Washington’s defense is one of the worst against the run, anyway you look at it. Montgomery and Gibbs are the type of pairing that should give them fits, so expect the Lions to ride their tightly-knit duo.

“It’ll mean a lot,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of Montgomery. “No. 5’s a big part of us. He’s a huge part of us, and to me, he’s a bellcow. He’s a tone-setter. He’s a catalyst, so there’s a place for him. There’s a place for him here, so there’ll be a place for him in this game. So, it’s going to be good to get him back.”

    Wide receivers

Starters: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Tim Patrick

    Backups: Allen Robinson, Kalif Raymond

The Lions have two 1,000-yard receivers in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. St. Brown is a first-team All-Pro for the second straight season. Williams has delivered on his first-round potential this year. They will ride those two receivers, along with Sam LaPorta, Gibbs and Montgomery to power the offense.

Tim Patrick hasn’t seen the ball much lately, with only three targets in three weeks. Allen Robinson drew only two in that span. Kalif Raymond just made his back to the field in Week 18 after a stint on injured reserve. Raymond and Patrick are the top two options behind Williams and St. Brown. But that doesn’t mean Robinson won’t draw a target or two.

    Tight ends

    1. Sam LaPorta

    2. Brock Wright

    3. Shane Zylstra

Sam LaPorta found the right time to hit his stride. He’s been targeted at least seven times in five straight games. LaPorta has 29 catches for 335 yards and two touchdowns in that span. Look for him to be a key player for this team in the postseason. LaPorta is hitting all the right notes when they need him most.

    Offensive line

Starters: LT Taylor Decker, LG Graham Glasgow, C Frank Ragnow, RG Christian Mahogany, RT Penei Sewell

Backups: OL Dan Skipper, OG Kayode Awosika, OL Michael Niese, OT/OG Colby Sorsdal, OT Giovanni Manu

    Out: RG Kevin Zeitler

Christian Mahogany is the planned starter at right guard. Kevin Zeitler will miss his first playoff game with the Lions after suffering a hamstring injury in the season finale. Mahogany filling his spot makes a ton of sense after his showing against the Chicago Bears only a couple of weeks ago.

The sixth-round rookie made the first start of his career in relief of Graham Glasgow at left guard. He looked like a natural, mean run-blocker while allowing only one pressure across 65 snaps. Mahogany has been in front of Kayode Awosika for multiple weeks running. But Awosika is a nice depth piece in case of emergency.

“Yeah, we thought that was a good showing by him, and it’s worthy of — if it goes there — to give him a shot,” Campbell said of Mahogany. “But then there again, we have (Awosika) Yode as well. He’s played snaps, played playoff snaps for us and we trust him as well. So, we feel like we’re in good hands.”

    Defensive line

DL Starters: Levi Onwuzurike, Za’Darius Smith, DJ Reader, Josh Paschal

Backups: Al-Quadin Muhammad, Brodric Martin, Myles Adams, Jonah Williams, Mitchell Agude

    Out: Pat O’Connor

The big change here is that Pat O’Connor is out for this game. O’Connor had developed a rotational role on the defensive line, playing double-digit snaps in the season’s final five games. His absence opens the door for someone like Jonah Williams, Myles Adams, or potentially Brodric Martin to crack the rotation. Adams and Williams are the likeliest candidates to help fill that void.

    Linebackers

    1. Jack Campbell (MIKE), Alex Anzalone (WILL)

    2. Trevor Nowaske (SAM), Anthony Pittman, Ezekiel Turner, Jalen Reeves-Maybin

Alex Anzalone came off the field for only one defensive snap in his return. He helped shut the Vikings down in the winner-take-all finale, holding T.J. Hockenson to only two catches while playing a ton of man coverage. Anzalone and Jack Campbell will dominate the snaps for most of this game.

Trevor Nowaske remains in the SAM linebacker picture. Jalen Reeves-Maybin has two games back under his belt in his return from injured reserve.

    Secondary

Cornerback starters: Terrion Arnold, Amik Robertson, Brian Branch (slot)

Safety starters: Ifeatu Melifonwu, Kerby Joseph

Backups: CB Kindle Vildor, CB Morice Norris

    Questionable: Ennis Rakestraw (hamstring/illness)

Terrion Arnold is good to go, entering Saturday without a designation after practicing all week. That was quite the shift from Week 18 when he needed help off the field before being carted to the locker room. Arnold avoided disaster with a foot contusion and seemed to know he was going to be OK from the get.

Expect to see the same situation in the secondary as in previous weeks.

Amik Robertson is on the outside with Arnold. Brian Branch and Ifeatu Melifonwu will boost the versatility in the box, in the slot, at safety and anywhere else needed. First-team All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph will have a key hand in trying to keep Terry McLaurin in front of this defense on Saturday. There isn’t much depth to this room, though, with Ennis Rakestraw questionable and Emmanuel Mosely on the non-football injury list.

    Special teams

    K — Jake Bates

    P — Jack Fox

    LS — Hogan Hatten

    Kickoffs — Jake Bates

    KR — Craig Reynolds

    2. — Sione Vaki

    PR — Kalif Raymond

    2. — Sione Vaki

Kalif Raymond was back in action to end the season, too. He’s a second-team All-Pro punt returner for a reason, and Raymond’s return is a big boost to the special teams and receiver depth.

The Detroit Lions are gearing up for the return of running back David Montgomery, and fans are eager to see how he will impact the team’s depth chart. Montgomery, who missed several games due to injury, is expected to bring a boost to the Lions’ running game and provide valuable depth at the position.

With Montgomery back in the mix, the Lions’ depth chart at running back is shaping up to be a formidable one. Rookie standout D’Andre Swift has been shouldering the load in Montgomery’s absence and has proven himself to be a dynamic playmaker. The two running backs are expected to form a potent one-two punch in the backfield, giving the Lions a versatile and dangerous rushing attack.

Montgomery’s return also provides valuable insurance for the Lions, as injuries can often decimate a team’s depth at key positions. Having a player of Montgomery’s caliber ready to step in and contribute immediately is a huge asset for Detroit.
