  • Vanguard slashes fees; expects its investors will save $350 million in 2025


    (Reuters) – Asset manager Vanguard said on Monday it was lowering the cost of investing across its fund lineup in its largest cut ever and estimated that this would translate into savings of more than $350 million for its investors this year.

    Valley Forge, Pennsylvania-based Vanguard slashed the expense ratio, or the cost of owning a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund, between one and six basis points across 87 of its funds, effective Feb. 1.

    The fee cut will lower costs across its bond mutual funds, ETFs, U.S. equity, international equity and money market funds.

    “The reductions will save Vanguard’s investors more than $350 million in 2025 alone, the largest annual expense ratio reduction in Vanguard’s nearly 50-year history,” the company said.

    “Lower fees mean fund investors can keep more of their returns and a competitive edge for our funds,” said Greg Davis, Vanguard’s chief investment officer.

    Chief Executive Officer Salim Ramji, who took over the mantle in July, laid out plans last year to expand the firm’s fixed-income offering, given the market’s size and opportunities.

    “Lower costs enable investors to keep more of their returns, and those savings compound over time,” Ramji said.

    Bonds were poised to play a crucial role in investors’ portfolios, according to Davis.

    Founded by Jack Bogle in 1975, the company has about $10.4 trillion in assets under management as of Nov. 30, 2024.

    Vanguard and larger rival BlackRock are the world’s largest providers of ETFs – low-cost products aimed at retail investors looking for an inexpensive way to invest in the biggest global markets.

    Vanguard offered 428 funds worldwide as of Dec. 31, 2024, with 212 of these in the United States.

    It has lowered investing costs more than 2,000 times since its founding, the company said.

  • How Kalen DeBoer expects Ryan Williams to improve for Alabama football in 2025


    Ryan Williams won’t be 17 anymore when the 2025 Alabama football season begins. The Crimson Tide wide receiver, the most famous minor in college football during his true freshman year, will be facing enormous expectations as a sophomore, with a new quarterback and facing defenses that have plenty of tape on him.

    Speaking to reporters Tuesday while attending a Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer said he was optimistic about Williams getting even better with age.

    “I know that he’s got much higher goals than what he accomplished this year,” DeBoer said. “And that’s individually and as a team. I’m really excited about him taking the next steps as a leader now. He’s gonna take care of his business and do what he needs to do, and we’re gonna be there to help him refine the things that are gonna make him the best of the best.”

    Williams finished 2024 with 48 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. His best games came early in the season, and he was especially productive against Georgia, going for 177 receiving yards and the game-winning touchdown.

    The Saraland native was a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Award, which goes to the nation’s top freshman.

    “He’s a team player through and through,” DeBoer said. “We saw that all season long. Him and Germ(ie Bernard) coming back as the leaders of the receiving core, I’m excited about what they bring from a mindset. When your best players are your best people and highest-character guys, it’s exciting what it can become, so we have that at the receiving core.”

    The Alabama receiver room will also have some newcomers for the 2025 season. Isaiah Horton transferred in from Miami, and the most recent recruiting class includes Lotzier Brooks and Derek Meadows.

    In addition, Cole Adams and Jalen Hale are set to return from injury, and Jaylen Mbakwe was practicing as a wideout ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl, moving over from defensive back.

    “I really like the way that that group is coming along under (Williams and Bernard’s) guidance,” DeBoer said.

    Alabama’s A-Day spring game is scheduled for April 12. The Crimson Tide will open the 2025 regular season Aug. 30 at Florida State.

  • CRAWFORD | Calipari expects emotional return to Rupp when Arkansas visits Kentucky | Sports


    LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — While the Kentucky men’s basketball team prepares for its latest knock-down, drag-out SEC road game — this time at No. 6 Tennessee on Tuesday — its former coach and several former players at Arkansas have a whole week to prepare for their much-anticipated return to Rupp Arena.

    John Calipari and Arkansas will be in Lexington for a 9 p.m. showdown with Kentucky on Saturday night — but they won’t exactly be striking fear into anyone. Arkansas is 12-8 overall, just 1-6 in the SEC, and recently lost point guard Boogie Fland (a former Kentucky signee) for the season.

    Asked about his return to the place where he won a national title, went to four Final Fours and won nearly 79% of his games, Calipari acknowledged it would be a challenge.

    “There will be some emotion, walking into that building,” he said. “Really being in town. Probably get together with some of my friends.”

    Calipari left Lexington out of frustration after loss to Oakland in a first-round exit of the NCAA Tournament, his second in three years. Fans had grown frustrated, and so had he.

    Wildcats Adou Thiero, DJ Wagner and Zvonimir Ivisic followed Calipari to Arkansas, as did Fland, a Kentucky recruit, and Top 40 recruit Billy Richmond, who also was coming to Kentucky.

    Arkansas rolled to an 11-2 start, its best win an 89-87 victory over Michigan. But SEC play has been difficult. Calipari and the Razorbacks lost their first five conference games, and limp into Lexington 1-6.

    After telling his players just to get the games close at the end, and he would lead them the rest of the way, following Arkansas’ first SEC win, over Georgia, the Razorbacks faltered late in a 65-62 loss to Oklahoma, their third home-court loss in four games.

    Despite Kentucky’s recent SEC struggles, Mark Pope’s Wildcats (14-5, 3-3) should be favored, though as always, Calipari has abundant talent and athleticism.

    “They’re playing good,” Calipari said. “We’ve got our hands full. Let’s see what happens. You know, they’re a good team. Mark’s doing a good job with them. So, we’ve just got to keep going, keep fighting, keep figuring this out. What does this team look like? What do we have to play like?”

    The game will also mark a return to Rupp for Calipari assistant Kenny Payne, who spent two tumultuous years as head coach at his alma mater, Louisville, before being fired with a record of 12-52. The last time Payne coached in the building, his Louisville team lost to Kentucky 86-63. Before taking the job at Louisville, Payne was an assistant at Kentucky from 2010 to 2020, the last six of those seasons as associate head coach.

    Kentucky won’t be able to turn its attention to the game for a couple of days. The Wildcats will try to snap a two-game losing streak at No. 6 Tennessee on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

  • Joson Sanon expects to play for ASU vs. No. 3 Iowa State


    Arizona State freshman Joson Sanon, who is dealing with an ankle injury, practiced Friday and is expected to play Saturday as the men’s basketball team hosts the No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones.

    “Joson looked fantastic today. It’s as good as he’s looked since prior to the injury,” ASU head coach Bobby Hurley told reporters. “He’s going to be green-lighted tomorrow assuming he responded well from what he did today in practice, which there’s nothing that I would think would be holding him back.”

    Sanon has played just one game this month, an 18-minute performance in an overtime game against Baylor on Jan. 11.

    He’s still the team’s second-leading scorer (12.8 points per game) behind wing BJ Freeman (13.2 points per game).

    Sanon is Arizona State’s most efficient perimeter scorer, who has hit 47% of his overall shots and 48% of his threes on 4.7 attempts per game.

    ASU (11-7) is coming off a road win against then- No. 23 West Virginia that ended a four-game skid.

    Iowa State (16-2) fell to that same WVU team on Jan. 18 but recovered in its last outing, a 108-83 win over UCF on Tuesday.

    Hurley hopes that acts as a confidence booster that combined with Sanon’s return can give the Sun Devils a chance against an ISU team that ranks in the top-10 in both offensive and defensive KenPom ratings.

    “That’s been a struggle, at times, just always being able to generate offense, always being able to keep fresh bodies on the floor,” Hurley said of Arizona State’s struggles this year. “When you add someone like (Sanon) back into the mix, it should hopefully give us a boost.”

  • Boeing expects $4 billion loss for fourth quarter after chaotic 2024

    Boeing said Thursday that it likely lost about $4 billion in the fourth quarter, adding to troubles at the manufacturer, which began 2024 with a midair accident and ended it with a crippling labor strike and layoffs.

    The company said it expects to post a loss of $5.46 per share for the fourth quarter. It said it expects its revenue to be $15.2 billion, less than analysts’ expectations, according to LSEG estimates. Boeing said it likely burned through $3.5 billion in cash in the quarter. Boeing raised more than $20 billion in the quarter to boost liquidity during its crises.

    Boeing hasn’t posted an annual profit since 2018.

    The company expects to take a $1.1 billion charge on its 777X and 767 programs because of the strike and new contract.

    “Although we face near-term challenges, we took important steps to stabilize our business during the quarter including reaching an agreement with our IAM-represented teammates and conducting a successful capital raise to improve our balance sheet,” Boeing’s CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a news release.

    Boeing has struggled to regain its footing after a door-plug blew out midair in January 2024, sparking a new safety crisis at the company that was trying to put behind it the fallout from two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019.

    The near-catastrophic accident brought new federal scrutiny and a slowdown of deliveries of new planes. A nearly two-month machinist strike that started in September shut down most of its commercial aircraft production. The workers, mostly in the Puget Sound area, won a new contract in November.

    The all-important commercial airplane unit revenue will likely come in at $4.8 billion, with a negative operating margin of nearly 44%.

    Boeing’s problems also extend to its defense unit, for which it expects to record pretax charges of $1.7 billion on the KC-46A tanker, and the long-delayed 747s that will service as the new Air Force One aircraft, as well as its space programs.

    LOS ANGELES — After being hospitalized Monday night with a chest injury during the Los Angeles Rams‘ victory over the Minnesota Vikings, tight end Tyler Higbee made the trip home with the team, head coach Sean McVay said Tuesday.

    McVay said Higbee was taken to a local hospital because he was “spitting up a little bit of blood.”

    McVay said he didn’t have a full update yet from the team’s medical staff but said Higbee’s expectation is “that he’ll be ready to go” on Sunday against the Eagles.

    Higbee had five catches for 58 yards and was the game’s leading receiver at the time of his injury.

    Monday’s game was only Higbee’s fourth this season. He returned in Week 16 after tearing his ACL and MCL during the Rams’ loss to the Detroit Lions in the wild-card round of the 2023 NFC playoffs.

    According to ESPN Research, Higbee tied a season high with five receptions, all in the first quarter Monday night. In the regular season, Higbee had 13 catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

    “It’s been great having him back,” McVay said Tuesday. “You felt his presence early. He was on pace to have a really big night, and he still made a huge contribution even just playing a quarter. I am hopeful and optimistic based on my dialogue with him that his expectations are he’s going to be ready to roll against Philly.”

  • Exec Expects This Team To Make Biggest Offer To Alex Bregman


    If the Boston Red Sox want to sign Alex Bregman, they might have to worry about a division rival making things difficult for them.

    Bregman arguably is the best player still available in free agency, but he is staying patient with hopes of receiving the exact contract offer he covets. It remains to be seen if those ideal terms ever will come across Bregman’s desk, but one MLB executive has a pretty good idea of where the richest offer will come from.

    “Now the Astros have moved on and the Red Sox, Tigers and Blue Jays all have varying degrees of interest,” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote in a column published Thursday. “One of the execs speculates that in the end, the Jays are in position to offer the most money, given their level of desperation. Now Bregman has choices to make.”

    It’s unclear if Bregman would take a cheaper contract in a more desirable location instead of going to Toronto for top dollar. Boston, for instance, might be an easier sell to Bregman, who would be able to reunite with Alex Cora and play in one of baseball’s premier markets.

    There might not be an imminent answer to those questions, though. Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, has never had a problem riding things out as far as possible.

  • JJ Redick Expects D’Angelo Russell To ‘Try To Go At Us’ During Lakers’ Game Against Nets


    The Los Angeles Lakers are set to host the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night, which will mark the return of D’Angelo Russell to Crypto.com Arena after he was traded a few weeks ago.

    Even though it didn’t end well, there’s no denying that Russell’s second stint with the Lakers was much more successful than his first.

    Regardless, there has to be some sour feelings on his part after being traded to the Nets for a second time. With that being the case, head coach JJ Redick is expecting Russell to try to take it to the Lakers on Friday.

    “I expect him to come out and try to have a great game,” Redick said after Thursday’s practice. “He does not have a lack of competitiveness. He takes a lot of pride in who he is as a player. I’m expecting him to try to go at us tomorrow.”

    Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht agrees with Redick although he is just happy to see his former teammate again after a few weeks.

    “Like you said, he’s going to go against his old team. He’s going to be ready to play us and it’s going to be a fun one. So it’ll be fun to see DLo again,” Knecht said.

    It remains to be seen if Russell will even play as he is considered day-to-day with a hamstring injury. He surely will do everything in his power to be on the court though as he has always played well at Crypto.com Arena and like Redick said, there is not doubt he will want to take it to his former team.

    Russell has been limited to just four games since he joined the Nets due to some injuries but in that time he is averaging 12.8 points and 8.3 assists while shooting 41% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range. The 28-year-old is in a contract year so is looking to finish the season strong in Brooklyn before becoming a free agent once again this summer.

    JJ Redick discusses Lakers’ second half turnaround against Heat

    The Lakers are coming off a quality win against the Miami Heat as they erased a double digit deficit in the second half to earn the comeback victory. After the game, head coach JJ Redick credited the turnaround to better communication and effort.

    If the Lakers do that for a full 48 minutes against Brooklyn on Friday then they should have no issues coming away with a second straight win.
