    Recap, Ending Explained & Easter Eggs


    Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for What If…? Season 3, episode 6What If…? Season 3, episode 6 is the next best thing instead of an actual Shang-Chi sequel. Starring Simu Liu and the cowboy hero “The Ten Rings” and Hailee Steinfeld as the sharpshooting Kate Bishop aka Hawkeye, this new episode and alternate MCU reality is set in the year 1872. Likewise, the ending of this new episode sets up the major series finale on the horizon for Marvel’s What If…? as well.

    Not unlike the previous What If…? Season 3, episode 5, this new MCU multiverse episode is a little more serious and focused compared to some of What If…?’s wackier chapters (see Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis’ egg). To that end, “What If…1872” features some very cool action sequences, as well as an exciting cliffhanger at its end. To that end, here’s our breakdown of What If…? Season 3, episode 6, its ending explained, and the biggest Easter eggs and references we found.

    What If…? Season 3 Episode 6 Spoilers & Key Story Takeaways

    “What If…1872?”

    • Shang-Chi aka The Ten Rings and his sharpshooting partner Hawkeye take down a posse led by John Walker in 1872.
    • John Walker points the duo to Point Pegasus as they seek to bring The Hood to justice.
    • The Watcher reveals that Xu Xialing immigrated to the United States, only to find her fellow Chinese immigrants oppressed by the crime lord known as The Hood. Xu Xialing disappeared going after The Hood, motivating Shang-Chi to hunt him down along with Kate Bishop (who lost her parents to the crime lord as well).
    • The Ten Rings and Hawkeye find a young boy named Jun-Fan whose entire town was abducted by The Hood on a “ghost train”.
    • The ghost train is revealed to be a trackless hovering train designed by Tony Stark, full of munitions and the abducted immigrants who are all in a hypnotic trance.
    • Sonny Burch and a full posse are on board, confirmed to be in league with The Hood. Burch agrees to take Ten Rings and Hawkeye to the crime lord.
    • The Hood is revealed to be Xu Xialing who killed the original crime lord and took his mantle, building an army to strike back and “liberate” the Wild West.
    • Sonny reveals himself as the one who killed Kate’s parents as he locks her in the same hypnotic trance, having stolen their fortune to fund The Hood’s army.
    • Jun-Fan rings a bell ten times, breaking the trance which allows Hawkeye to defeat Burch.
    • Shang-Chi refuses to fight his sister, forcing Hawkeye to kill the newly corrupted Hood when she tries to kill him.
    • After helping the Chinese immigrants resettle, The Ten Rings and Hawkeye ride off into the sunset looking for more dangers and people to help.
    • The Watcher is captured by The Eminence, The Executioner, and The Incarnate to pay for his frequent interventions and the breaking of his oath.

    How Shang-Chi Defeated The Hood And Their Identity Explained

    (Also, What Happened To The Watcher?)

    The end of What If…? Season 3, episode 6 reveals that Xu Xialing killed the original Hood before taking his presumably demon-possessed cloak as her own. Seeking to raise an army of immigrants against the West to “make it what they were promised”, Xialing can’t see that she’s enslaving the innocent and warping their minds. Unfortunately, Xialing was far too warped and corrupted by The Hood’s power to see any differently, resulting in her death by Hawkeye when Shang-Chi refuses to fight (and Xialing was moving in for the kill).

    2025 will see the debut of the original Hood aka Parker Robbins, played by Anthony Ramos in the MCU’s Ironheart series. The live-action show was meant to release before What If…? Season 3 in 2023, but faced multiple delays.

    What If Season 3 Cast & Character Guide

    What If…? returns for its final season with an enormous cast of characters plucked from every disparate corner of the constantly expanding MCU.

    The Watcher confirms the story ends better than it could have, seeing as how he himself dispatched one of Burch’s men who would have killed Jun-Fan. Instead, Jun-Fan lives to help save the day with Hawkeye and The Ten Rings. However, this proves to be one intervention too many for the trio of other Watchers first seen in earlier episodes, who have now come to see Uatu finally answering for the many times he’s broken his oath. As such, this final reckoning will likely be the focus of the series’ final two episodes of What If…? Season 3 still to come.

    What If…? Season 3 Episode 5’s Biggest Easter Eggs and References

    Featuring Cameos, Key MCU References, and More

    There are several exciting and cool MCU Easter eggs, appearances, and references in What If…? Season 3, episode 6. Here are all the biggest ones we found:

    • Burning Film – The new What If…? episode opens with a burning film effect, a classic transition seen in several Westerns.
    • The Ten Rings – Shang-Chi is referred to as “The Ten Rings”, as the legends say he appears when a bell is rung ten times (rather than having his father’s powerful weapons).
    • Shang-Chi’s Bandanna – Shang-Chi’s bandanna is red with white dragon scales, a nod to the MCU’s “Great Protector” seen in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings.
    • John Walker – Wyatt Russell’s John Walker leads a posse against The Ten Rings, also known as U.S. Agent in the main MCU who’s set to appear next in Marvel’s Thunderbolts* in 2025.
    • Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye – The Ten Rings’ partner is none other than Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, an impressive sharpshooter.
    • The Hood – The Ten Rings and Hawkeye are after The Hood who’s revealed to be Shang-Chi’s sister Xu Xialing. However, the original Hood is Parker Robbins, who will soon debut in the main MCU played by Anthony Ramos in 2025’s Ironheart series.
    • Point Pegasus – John Walker points the Ten Rings in the direction of Point Pegasus, a nod to SHIELD’s Project Pegasus seen in Avengers and Captain Marvel.
    • Shang-Chi’s Theme – The main theme from 2021’s Shang-Chi can be briefly heard in this episode from original composer Joel P. West.
    • Wacky Alternate MCU Universes – The Watcher mentions some very strange realities in the multiverse, including one that’s home to Throg & Croki, Crossbones captaining a band of sea-faring pirates, and even one where Ultron was programmed to perform show tunes.
    • Titans of MCU Industry – Boarding The Hood’s high-tech trackless train, The Ten Rings and Hawkeye discover stores of Stark Munitions, Hammer Steel, and Cross Manufacturing. As such, these appear to be the Old West counterparts to the main MCU’s Stark Industries, Hammer Industries, and Cross Technologies.
    • Sonny Burch – Sonny Burch is revealed to be working with The Hood, Walton Goggins’ black market weapons dealer first seen in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.
    • “Fists of Fury” – Sonny Burch refers to Shang-Chi’s hand as “first of fury”, the same name as the classic Bruce Lee movie.
    • Russian Hypnotism? – Burch uses a form of hypnotism he picked up from a Russian to subjugate all the Chinese railroad workers for The Hood’s army. This could either be a reference to The Winter Soldier’s brainwashing, or perhaps Doctor Faustus’ hypnosis techniques seen in Agent Carter.
    • “Iron Fists” – Hawkeye mentions that Jun-Fan has “Iron Fists”, a nod to the MCU’s kung fu warrior Iron Fist (whom many hope will team up with Shang-Chi one day)
    • “Sun’s Getting Real Low” – The episode ends with Shang-Chi speaking the same phrase used to calm down Bruce Banner’s Hulk, having been first heard in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Starring Riri Williams as one of this timeline’s very last heroes, it’s all she can do to keep fighting back against the dark forces that have taken over a literally broken world. However, the ending features a major twist, one that could have dire consequences beyond this lone reality.

    Unlike Darcy and Howard the Duck’s wacky adventure seen in What If…? Season 3, episode 4, this new episode is far more serious, set in a dystopian version of the MCU where the Emergence that was prevented in 2021’s Eternals was successful, resulting in a broken planet where one Marvel villain in particular was able to seize power in the aftermath. To that end, here’s our breakdown of What If…? Season 3, episode 5, the surprise ending explained, and the biggest Easter eggs and references we found throughout the new episode.

    What If…? Season 3 Episode 5 Spoilers & Key Story Takeaways

    “What If…The Emergence Destroyed The Earth?”

    • Uatu reveals Riri Williams’ Ironheart is the last best hope in every variation of this dark new reality, but that she fails every single time.
    • Riri meets with Sharon Carter’s Power Broker who sells her an easy bake oven which will help her build a new weapon.
    • Attacked by White Vision and a collection of Iron Legionaries (though some are only holograms), Riri is rescued by “The Resistance”: General Ming Nan, Okoye, Wong, and Valkyrie.
    • Uatu reveals that Tiamut emerged well before the Eternals could come together to stop it, breaking the Earth in the process.
    • Mysterio used the chaos to take over Stark Industries and rule the world using his hologram tech and the Iron Legion, creating the new Iron Federation led by his enforcer, White Vision.
    • Nearing his final days, Mysterio wanted to ensure the Resistance fell before he did, sending White Vision to annihilate them before he died.
    • With the Resistance’s help, Riri builds her weapon and kills White Vision, though she and those who saved her are the only members of the Alliance left.
    • Turning White Vision’s synthezoid body into a new suit, Riri becomes half-human and half-synthezoid, allowing her to see through Mysterio’s illusions (temporarily).
    • Mysterio ultimately gains the upper hand after killing the last of the Resistance and nearly kills Riri, wanting to take her suit to prolong his life.
    • Uatu intervenes, encouraging Riri to keep fighting. Riri stands up and phases through Mysterio, taking his nanites and defeating the dystopian dictator before generating a giant Avengers symbol in the sky to bring hope to those who still live on the broken Earth.
    • A trio of Watchers witnesses Uatu breaking his oath yet again, and they all agree that they must now watch The Watcher going forward.

    How Ironheart Defeated Mysterio Explained

    (And Why The Watcher Got Involved…)

    Even with her new suit made from White Vision’s parts turning her into a half-human, half-synthezoid hybrid, Riri’s spirit was broken by Mysterio with the reveal that he’d murdered her friends in the Resistance. Unable to keep fighting any longer, it’s Uatu who reveals that Ironheart’s spirit is always broken and Mysterio always emerges the victor every single time he watches across all variations of this reality. However, Uatu decides to break his oath, encouraging Riri to keep fighting and rise up, massively altering this reality’s entire fate.

    Hearing Uatu’s words, Riri stands for one last push, phasing through Mysterio’s body and taking all the nanites that had been keeping him alive. Flying up into Earth’s orbit, Riri generates a massive Avengers symbol for all to see as Uatu watches on. However, the surprise twist is that Uatu is being watched by a triumvirate of Watchers known as the Eminence, Incarnate, and The Executioner. Displeased that Uatu has broken his oath once again, the trio agrees to keep watching their fellow Watcher, suggesting that he may soon face the consequences of his interventions.

    Multiple Connections Is This Dark New MCU Reality

    There are a handful of MCU references, Easter eggs, and appearances in What If…? Season 3, episode 5. Here are all the biggest ones we found in this dark new reality:

    • Iron LegionFirst seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark created the Iron Legion to assist the Avengers. However, in this reality, Mysterio co-opts the drones to serve as his Iron Federation after he takes over Stark Industries.
    • Sharon Carter’s Power Broker – Her dark turn having been revealed in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sharon Carter is still the Power Broker in this reality, shown selling Riri an easy bake oven to use for her weapon. As such, it’s a good sign Sharon may soon return to the live-action MCU.
    • An Alternate White Vision – It seems Vision was similarly killed and repurposed into a White Vision in this reality, just like in the main MCU as seen in WandaVision before the Vision Wanda created shared his memories with him.
    • Love and Thunder’s Asgardian Skiff – The Resistance is shown saving Riri and bringing her aboard an Asgardian skiff, the same one seen in Thor: Love and Thunder (minus the giant screaming goats).
    • Casper The Friendly Ghost – Fighting White Vision to buy Riri time to build her weapon, Wong refers to the synthezoid as “Casper”, a reference to the classic friendly ghost character.
    • Ultimate Mysterio – Mysterio’s new look in What If…? Season 3, episode 5 does carry some resemblance the comics’ Ultimate Mysterio, the same variant who brought Earth-616’s Peter Parker and Earth-1610’s Miles Morales together for the very first time on the page.
    • Master of Illusions – As he dies, Mysterio refers to himself as “The Master of Illusions.” This is the same moniker the villain calls himself in the comics as well.
    • A Trio of Watchers – This new trio of Watchers could very well be the same three Watchers first shown in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, seen listening to the stories of Stan Lee.

    The fastest way to collect Mega Abomasnow Energy is to defeat one in a Mega Raid. Below you’ll find the counters and weaknesses for Mega Abomasnow to help you achieve this:


    Mega Abomasnow.
    • Mega Abomasnow types – Grass and Ice-type
    • Mega Abomasnow is double weak against – Fire-type attacks.
    • Mega Abomasnow is weak against – Bug, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Rock and Steel-type attacks.
    • Mega Abomasnow is resistant to – Electric, Grass, Ground and Water-type attacks.
    • Mega Abomasnow Mega counters – Mega Blaziken, the kickin’ chicken, is easily the best counter available. Mega Charizard Y as a fairly close second, but Mega Charizard X is a distant third.

    Best Mega Abomasnow moveset in Pokémon Go

    Mega Abomasnow is only really useful as an Ice-type attacker, which is pretty handy as that’s how you’d use President Snow (we also like to call him that) in PVP. It’s the most powerful Ice-type Mega Pokémon, but only the fifth-most powerful Ice-type attacker. So, while it’s a great Pokémon to have, it’s not the be all and end all.


    Abomasnow.

    If you plan on using Abomasnow in PVP, you will want to add a third attack for some Grass-type coverage. If it’s just for raids, you can just run the first two moves below.

    Mega Abomasnow’s best moveset in Pokémon Go is Powder Snow (Fast), Weather Ball (Ice, Charged) and Energy Ball (Charged). This a spammy moveset that puts down a lot of shield pressure. Back in the day, the Snow Ball combo made this quite abominable indeed. We loved it.

    These days, it is still decent in Great League, but performs best in Ultra League. Master League isn’t really an option for this Pokémon.

    The Frost Tree Pokémon, Abomasnow, is the final evolution of Snover, the other Frost Tree Pokémon. Incidentally, it is the only other Grass/Ice-type Pokémon in the entire franchise (including Ice/Grass types which are technically different, but exactly the same).

Interestingly, this is a lot more obvious when you look at the Japanese name, ユキカブリ (Yukikaburi), which means ‘Snow Head’.

    Its evolution – President Aboma, President Snow or simply Abomasnow – believe it or not, is actually a peaceful Pokémon, despite looking like an angry yeti. This time, its Japanese name is a lot cooler, and more befitting of its status: ユキノオ (Yukinooh), which means ‘Snow King’. It just wants a quiet life, surrounded by pretty snow flowers. Sleigh, king.

    Amid their struggles with the bat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), India made a huge change in their batting order as KL Rahul did not open the batting despite being the team’s best batter in the series so far. Coming into the game, Rahul has 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47 with two half-centuries.

    Despite being the only batter showing any semblance of consistency in the batting order, Rahul walked out to bat at number three. Indian captain Rohit Sharma walked out to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal after playing at number six in the Adelaide and Brisbane Tests.

    The move was a tactical choice by Team India after the surprise decision to drop Shubman Gill. Rahul replaced the 25-year-old at number three. Rohit’s bold move backfired as his poor run of form continued. The Indian captain departed after making just three runs, with Pat Cummins dismissing him in the second over of the innings.

    India has played a merry-go-round with Rahul’s batting position in 2024. He started the year by playing at number six against South Africa at Cape Town before being promoted to number four in the Hyderabad Test against England.     College football’s inaugural 12-team playoff is here. Over Friday and Saturday, four first-round games are on the slate, with the higher seed playing host. On Friday night things kick off with Notre Dame hosting Indiana, and then three games are on the Saturday slate: SMU at Penn State, Clemson visiting Texas, and then Tennessee taking on Ohio State.

    Waiting in the wings? Arizona State, Boise State, Georgia, and top-seeded Oregon.

    With eight evenly-matched teams in action this weekend, there is the potential that the first-ever 12-team playoff sees a game advance to overtime.

    In that case, here are the rules you need to know.

    College football overtime begins with a coin toss, and the team that wins the toss likely wants to defer the choice and begin on defense. The reason? Both teams are guaranteed a possession, so by going on offense second you know what you need to score to either win the game or extend the game to a second overtime.

    The team that starts on offense begins their possession on their opponent’s 25-yard line, facing 1st and 10. Should they reach the end zone, they have the option to kick the extra point or attempt the two-point conversion.

    Once the first team’s drive ends, the team that started on defense begins their offensive possession, again on their opponent’s 25-yard line.

    If the game remains tied after this first overtime period, the game advances to a second overtime.

    The rules are tweaked slightly in the second overtime. The team that started on defense first will begin the second overtime on offense, and in the second overtime, teams are required to go for the two-point conversion if they score a touchdown.

    Should the game remain tied after two overtime periods, starting with the third overtime period the rules are tweaked again. Now the offenses simply attempt a two-point conversion, and the teams alternate two-point conversion attempts until a winner is determined.

    Each team has one timeout per overtime period.

    A good example of how this extended overtime process works comes from this year’s rivalry game between Georgia and Georgia Tech. That game required eight overtimes to be decided. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first two overtime periods, sending the game to the third overtime and the alternating two-point conversions portion.

    Neither team scored in the third or fourth OTs. However, both Georgia and Georgia Tech scored in the fifth. Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh overtime periods, sending the game to an eighth overtime.

    That is when Georgia Tech failed on their two-point attempt, but Georgia converted theirs for a 44-42 victory.
