Who are Kiesza and Aloe Blacc? The 2025 Rose Parade opening performers, explained – Pasadena Star News
On Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, singers Kiesza and Aloe Blacc will kick off the 2025 Rose Parade with musical performances atop the float by Honda, where they’ll be accompanied by a synchronized light show, pyrotechnics and dancers galore.
The Tournament of Roses announced the pair on Dec. 11 as the newest musical talents to begin the parade, a slot held by David Archuleta, Cassadee Pope, Michelle Williams and Rush Davis during last year’s parade.
If it’s the first you’re hearing of the performers — or you need a refresher — here’s who they are, what they’re known for and what they’re up to now:
Kiesza
The Canadian-born, 35-year-old singer and instrumentalist is best known for her 2014 hit “Hideaway,” which dominated global charts at the time of its release and holds over 347,000,000 streams on Spotify.
That happens to be the song she’s slated to perform during the parade, where she’ll be joined by 20 dancers in shimmering reflective costumes during a reprised version of the song with “renewed energy for the global audience,” organizers said. She’ll also perform a glimpse of her Billboard No. 1 hit, “I Go Dance,” while in the backdrop, extreme acrobats on jumping stilts will perform.
Once a folk singer, Kiesza primarily produces up-tempo dance music, which is the genre of both her released albums; 2014’s “Sound of a Woman” and 2020’s “Crave.” In 2018, she was featured on Dreamworks’ “Home” soundtrack with her song “Cannonball.“
Most recently, Kiesza released her 2024 EP “Dancing and Crying: Vol. 1” and has been sharing her journey to the Rose Parade stage on her Instagram.
Aloe Blacc
After Kiesza, it’s Aloe Blacc’s turn to take the float stage. He will perform his “Wake Me Up”— a global mega-hit by the late Avicii, in which Blacc was the co-writer and vocalist.
Born in Orange County, the 45-year-old singer and rapper got his start in indie rap group Emanon, comprised of himself and hip hop producer Exile in 1995.
Blacc launched his solo career in 2003 and hit his first major success with the 2010 song, “I Need a Dollar,” which has since grossed nearly 285,000,000 streams on Spotify. Other hits include 2013’s “The Man” and, more recently, a country version of “Wake Me Up,” which Blacc released with country-singer Cooper Alan in November of 2024.
Today, Blacc boasts over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and recently announced his upcoming residency at New York City venue Blue Note.

Months After Full House’s Jodie Sweetin Recreated Stephanie Tanner’s Boyz II Men Dance In Viral Video, She Explained How She Totally Nailed It
Full House remains a favorite among fans even almost 30 years after it ended, partly because of its easy availability streaming with a Max subscription. There are memorable moments from the TGIF sitcom that are still talked about, including Stephanie’s “Motown Philly” dance in the Season 5 episode “Gotta Dance.” Jodie Sweetin recreated her character’s dance back in August, and now she finally opened up about nailing it after all these years.
In the episode, Stephanie talked Danny into letting her take dance classes, which wound up taking up much of her time and she didn’t realize it until D.J. told her if she had her discipline and dedication, she’d have no life. Not wanting to take the class anymore and put her relationships first, Stephanie purposely messed up the dance during the recital but after a talk with Danny, she apologized to her fellow dancers. They went back out and absolutely killed the Boyz II Men song.
33 years later, Sweetin and artist Mitchell Gerrard Johnson recreated the viral dance, complete with matching outfits, and they got quite a lot of praise. Take a look, if you missed it over the summer:
Considering a lot of time has passed, it was certainly impressive that Sweetin was able to do the dance pretty perfectly. I was impressed with just little Sweetin nailing the dance all those years ago; doing it again years later is pretty great and a fun Full House throwback. The actress spoke to PEOPLE about recreating the dance and the process, and it’s almost as if the routine never left her:
Mitchell — who’s the dancer that does all of these great recreate videos — he and I met up, and I’d been watching the video at home just so I could kind of, you know, go back. Weirdly, I was like, ‘Oh, right. That!’ It was like in my body. By the time we got to the studio and started doing it, I actually knew the whole thing and he had only done like the first two eight-counts. And he was like, ‘Wait, you learned the whole thing?’
Props to Sweetin for managing to do the dance perfectly and to look good while doing it. It’s unknown if she will be recreating any more dances or scenes from Full House or Fuller House, but it’s clear that it’s a quick study for her if she’d known the steps way back when.
This isn’t the first dance of Stephanie’s that was recreated and it hopefully won’t be the last since the middle Tanner sister was quite the little dancer. And for Sweetin, it seems like all it takes is for her to rewatch a video and practice it a few times in order to nail it. There was a great callback to Full House in Fuller House when Jimmy Gilbert did the infamous “Love Shack” dance from Season 3’s “Our Very First Telethon,” complete with the outfit. It just shows how iconic Stephanie Tanner was and is and how she will always have an impact on Jodie Sweetin.
Full House is perfect for your next long-binge and there’s a reason it hasn’t been off the air in 35 years. The show is still beloved by many, and much of the cast is still close. I can’t wait to see what other memorable moments are hopefully recreated in the future.

Sanders previewed a Hall of Fame NFL career when he ran for 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns in 1988, smashing the record previously held by Marcus Allen.
Sanders averaged 7.6 yards per carry and easily won the Heisman Trophy, receiving 559 first-place votes to Rodney Peete’s 70. Sanders’ 37 rushing touchdowns remain a single-season record as well.
Sanders himself wished Jeanty luck in his pursuit of the rushing record on social media ahead of the Mountain West title game.

Sanders recorded multiple rushing touchdowns in each game in 1988, including three five-touchdown games. He ran for less than 200 yards in five of his first six games but increased the pace with three games of at least 300 yards the rest of the way.
Bowl games did not count toward anyone’s stats in 1988, however. That means Sanders’ Holiday Bowl performance didn’t count while Jeanty’s Fiesta Bowl stats will.

How many games did Barry Sanders play in 1988?
Sanders played in 12 games in 1988, but only 11 of them counted toward the record book. The 12th game was the Holiday Bowl, but his impressive performance didn’t count toward his season stats.
The NCAA began counting bowl games toward a player’s stats in 2002.

Sanders rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns against Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. Oklahoma State won 62-14.

Chad Duell is speaking out to explain why he decided to leave the soap opera General Hospital after nearly 15 years on the show.
The actor began playing Michael Corinthos on the ABC soap series back in 2010 and he announced his departure in November 2024. The show’s executive producer revealed at the time that there are no plans to recast his role at this time, but it could happen in the future.
Chad appeared on a recent episode of The Daily Drama Podcast and explained why he left the show.

“It’s a life adjustment,” he said (via People). “A lot of stuff’s been going on in my life. There’s a few things behind it but one thing I did say is my dad passed away and I’m still coming to terms with that.”
Chad continued, “I’m preparing myself for next chapters. Obviously with [creator] Frank [Hursley] and everything, I left the door open there. Right now, I’m just trying to grow in ways that maybe I feel like I stifled myself in certain aspects, and sometimes you need to take drastic steps or make yourself feel uncomfortable to take a step. And that’s what I’ve not allowed myself to do in a long time, is step into more uncomfortable situations and grow, instead of comfortable and complacent.”
Chad noted that he felt he got lost in the work after playing Michael for so long.
“I had a very strong complacency for such a long time that my identity was wrapped up in that,” he said. “Who I was was the show and the characters that I’ve done for so long. It’s gonna be a process kind of unraveling and really seeing who I am. There’s a lot of work I have to do to achieve the potential that I know I have — not just career-wise but in a lot of aspects. I feel like I’ve been moreso in a bubble of comfort for such a long time.”
Chad teased some plans for the new year.
“Come January, I have a few things planned that I wanna do for myself, and it’s different because I have a kid now, but also at the same time, for him, and me as well, and everybody, it’s doing what’s best for me, spiritually, mentally,” he said. “Everything will only reflect my energy in a better way towards everybody around me. I want to make sure that I take care of myself.”
