  • Chris Canty Explains Why Joe Burrow is Not an Elite Quarterback


    There are still nine days until the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs play in Super Bowl LIX so that means it was time for First Take to ease into the weekend by litigating if Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is elite or not. On its face this doesn’t seem like particularly fertile ground for back-and-forth oration but Chris Canty was up to the task of boldly saying no when most people say yes.

    “He’s not an elite quarterback,” Canty said. “We’ve got to get out of this thing where we want to anoint everybody an elite quarterback. I’m just saying we can’t give the runner-up to the runner-up to the runner-up elite quarterback status. There ain’t but three spots on the medal stand. When we start talking about the podium it’s a gold medal spot, it’s a silver medal spot and it’s a broze medal spot. The fourth-place guy don’t get an acknowledgment.”

    Canty pointed out that Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have done more in the NFL than Burrow. It might be worth pointing out that two of those guys have never made it to a Super Bowl but forget it, Canty was rolling.

    “Joe Burrow’s claim to fame is, once upon a time four years ago, beat Patrick Mahomes in a playoff game on his way to losing the Super Bowl. I’m sorry, that doesn’t give you elite status.”

    Setting aside the fact that no one should really care who is granted this mythical “elite” status, when people are made to care, they all have different metrics. Someone could just as easily envision a Mount Rushmore as they could a medal stand. It’s all meaningless and open to interpretation.

    Also, Burrow’s claim to fame is that he’s an awesome NFL quarterback and has been since he entered the NFL. It’s a weird thing to do to turn the best thing he’s ever done in his career, especially because there’s no need to go back four years on Burrow, who had a tremendous season in 2024 only to be let down by his defense.

    As always, know if someone attempts to draw you into a conversation about the eliteness of an NFL quarterback, be prepared to get into a whole thing and leave frustrated.

    Dottie Pepper said the slow pace of play in golf has “been gnawing at me for a while,” and added that she hopes her on-air complaint last weekend serves as a springboard for serious change.

    Pace of play once again became a hot topic last Saturday during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where Pepper was CBS Sports’ on-course analyst walking with the final group.

    Pepper told The Associated Press that she was notified via text message by CBS Sports colleague Frank Nobilo that the final group made the turn in nearly three hours, prompting her message that has since gone viral.

    “You know, Frank,” Pepper said during the broadcast. “I think we’re starting to need a new word to talk about this pace-of-play issue, and it’s ‘respect’ — for your fellow competitors, for the fans, for broadcasts, for all of it. It’s just got to get better.”

    Pepper clarified her remarks Sunday during an interview with the AP, saying that she was not directing her comments specifically at the final group.

    “It’s been gnawing at me and a lot of people for a while,” Pepper said. “It was not a comment targeted at the final group of a PGA Tour event that CBS was carrying. It was at the general state of the game, down to club play — private or municipal — junior golf, amateur golf, collegiate golf.

    “I don’t know what the answer is,” McIlroy said Tuesday ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. “There’s a lot of different answers, but not every answer is going to — is not going to make everyone happy. I could say smaller fields. Smaller fields would help pace of play, but that takes away playing opportunities from people and that’s going to piss some people off.”

    The USGA has a recommendation — not a rule — on how long it should take to play a shot: 40 seconds, with an extra 10 seconds if a player is first to hit that shot. It’s a policy on the PGA Tour, which has plans for a working group of players to study pace of play.

    McIlroy mentioned Major League Baseball’s recent addition of a pitch clock, which has considerably quickened the pace of its games.

    “Obviously the MLB introduced a pitch clock at the start of last season, and that seemed to work pretty well,” he said. “You can try to introduce it, but how’s it governed — that’s a very hard thing to do for every single group on the golf course.”

    Pepper’s role in golf goes beyond her 17 LPGA victories and two majors, her Solheim Cup legacy and her two decades in broadcasting. She also spent three years on the PGA of America board of directors.

    “I love the game too much,” she said. “Let’s take advantage of the heat we have. People are more engaged than they’ve been in a long time. We have TGL. We have influencers. Golf has a little bigger profile than it did before. Let’s not mess it up.”

    In an exclusive preview of his commercial for Uber Eats, which will debut in full during the big game, he has a very Matthew McConaughey take. There’s really no other way to explain it.

    As the Dallas Buyers Club actor sees it, the whole event is nothing but a way to entice the audience to dig into a dish of… something.

    First he questions the name of it, noting that the LIX is “licks” when sounded out.

    “They are literally telling us to lick our lips to buy their savory snacks,” he says.

    Just as suspect to the Oscar winner is that the game is being played at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome. In his mind, it a venue that’s “named after America’s favorite salad, Caesar’s.”

    And of course he breaks out one of McConaughey-isms: “Just cause we watch the game don’t mean we ain’t being played, baby.”

    McConaughey is a known football fan, especially if the game involves his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin.

    He tells EW that his Super Bowl spot is “a deeper dive into the historical conspiracy that football was created to make us hungry and sell food. In this Uber Eats ad I’ll show you, from the day football was created up to now, that this theory is more than just a wild notion, but an obvious plot.”

    In October, McConaughey starred in an ad for the same company in which he shared his conspiracy theory with San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. As McCaffrey wondered why he couldn’t stop being hungry, McConaughey told him that it was because of all the food terms. With words like turnovers and scrambles floating around, the appetite was inevitable — or so he said.

  • LeBron James Explains How Lakers Held Warriors’ Stephen Curry Scoreless In Second Half


    The Los Angeles Lakers took care of business on Saturday night by defeating Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors in a primetime battle. Anthony Davis and LeBron James led the way in a game the Lakers had control of for much of the way. The Warriors had their biggest lead of six points early in the first quarter, and L.A. led the way from there.

    One way the Lakers were able to keep their lead throughout the game was their ability to limit Stephen Curry. The Warriors superstar could have easily taken over the game at any point, but he couldn’t hit shots with any consistency. He finished with 13 points on 4-for-17 from the field and 2-for-9 from beyond the arc and did not score in the second half.

    LeBron was asked after the game how the Lakers were able to keep Curry scoreless in the second half and keep him largely in check throughout the game. He said that it was less about the gameplan and more about Curry simply missing, via Spectrum SportsNet:

    “Just hoped that he missed. It’s Steph, man. Put bodies in front of him and hoped that he miss.”

    Beyond just Curry, LeBron felt the Lakers did a great job with their defense, mainly with the way they helped one another when there were breakdowns:

    “Just flying around, helping each other when things broke down, which is gonna happen because when you play a Steph Curry team, you’re gonna have breakdowns. That’s just how good he is. You have a lot of eyes on him, a lot of bodies in front of him. For a majority of the game when we did break down, we had guys covering for them and that helps.”

    The Lakers got defensive contributions across the board on Saturday, especially with Jarred Vanderbilt making his return to the lineup. With Vanderbilt, Dorian Finney-Smith, Max Christie and Davis, the Lakers actually appear to have some defensive versatility and switchability in some lineups.

    LeBron got to see that first-hand from L.A. on Saturday, and it was instrumental in keeping Curry in check — beyond just him missing — and in the Lakers getting their fifth win in six games.

    LeBron James staying even-keeled after big wins

    The Lakers picked up their best win of the season on Thursday night, dominating the Boston Celtics 117-96. LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves all had big nights, but it was a true team effort that allowed the Lakers to come away with the victory.

    In terms of the main reason for the win, James pointed towards the Lakers simply executing the gameplan laid out for them by Redick and the coaching staff.

    Despite the impressive nature of the performance, LeBron isn’t reading too much into this victory and reiterated that he still feels the Lakers aren’t title contenders just yet.
