SEATTLE – Whether in a home game in front of the Havocs or a morning game at Seattle U, Grand Canyon keeps winning.
With a unique starting time of 11 a.m. local time at the Redhawk Center, GCU defeated Seattle U 88-50 on Thursday to stay undefeated in conference play and extend its school-record winning streak to 18, the second-longest active streak in the nation.News and notes
- Five Lopes registered double-figure point totals while 11 GCU players scored with 54% team shooting. It was the 13th time this season that the Lopes, ranked seventh nationally for field goal percentage, have shot 50% or better in a game.
- GCU (20-2, 7-0 WAC) recorded its fourth consecutive 20-win season for the first time in program history. The victory extended the the Division I-era program record winning streak to 18 games, which also tied the all-time winning streak mark that was recorded over two seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08).
- Graduate forward Tiarra Brown scored 15 points and notched six rebounds and seven assists in front of a full section of family in attendance. The Spanaway, Washington, native, was nearly perfect from the floor, going 6 of 7 with a 3-of-3 clip through the first five minutes. Brown is 8-0 vs. Seattle U in her GCU career.
- After missing three games, Lopes senior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas started Thursday and tallyied 10 points with two rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes.
“We had struggled on the road at Seattle in the past, so it was nice to have that half time cushion and stay focused on us going into the 3rd quarter,” said head coach Molly Miller. “Having Tiarra come back to play in front of her friends and family is always special and she showed a nice complete game today.”
Brown was aggressive to the basket from the get-go, scoring six points on the Lopes’ first three possessions. Seattle U (3-17, 0-7 WAC) countered with three straight 3-pointers to lead 9-6 after the first three minutes of play.
GCU settled in, seeing a pair of 3-pointers drop via graduate guard Anna Ostlie and senior guard Ale’jah Douglas for a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Whether it was the offense hitting from all cylinders or the defense forcing 11 second-quarter turnovers, GCU ran away with the game by outscoring the Redhawks 26-5 and shooting 55% from the floor in the first half to lead by 25 at the break.
Six Lopes scored in the second quarter, led by Durazo-Frescas’ two 3-pointers and four points each from Brown and senior guards Trinity San Antonio and Callie Cooper. Ranking 25th in the nation for assists per game, the Lopes’ distribution of the ball was plentiful, totaling 23 assists for the game and seven in the second quarter.
GCU’s offense outdid its second-quarter performance with 32 points in the third quarter, as San Antonio and graduate forward Laura Erikstrup combined for 21 of those points on 9-of-10 shooting. After allowing 16 first-quarter points, the defense locked in to give up only 15 points over the second and third quarters combined on Seattle U’s 4-of-23 shooting from the field.“I thought we were well balanced across the board,” Miller said. “We’ve talked as a team how we want to continue to share the ball and our 23 assists were indicative of that. We continue to show we can win in different ways and today it was against 40 minutes of zone. I’m proud of how they keep stepping up to any challenge and getting better everyday.”
The Lopes scored 19 fastbreak points to Seattle U’s six, marking the 17th time this season that GCU scored more fastbreak points than its opponent to improve to 17-0 in such contests.
GCU heads to Utah for a Saturday afternoon contest at Utah Valley in Orem. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. (Phoenix time).The Lopes won the teams’ first meeting 71-59 on Jan. 9 in Phoenix with Erikstrup tallying 22 points and 10 rebounds and San Antonio adding 19 points.

Hozier extends ‘Unreal Unearth’ tour to include Hershey this fall: Where to buy tickets
Hozier has again extended his “Unreal Unearth” tour, which now includes a show in Hershey.
The Irish singer and songwriter will perform on Friday, Sept. 19, at Hersheypark Stadium.
The tour started in 2023 and was extended in 2024.
“This exciting new leg of the tour will see the acclaimed singer-songwriter touring stadiums for the first time along with his return to amphitheaters and festivals around the country,” Live Nation said in a news release.
According to Live Nation, the tour has attracted more than a million fans “with record-breaking ticket sales over the 83 performances and countless sold-out shows across 72 cities.”
Supporting will be Gigi Perez and Amble in select cities.
Fans can sign up for the artist presale now through 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5. General ticket sales will start at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, on Ticketmaster.
Hozier’s hits have included “Take Me to Church,” “Almost,” “Nina Cried Power” and “Too Sweet.”

5.0Winter storm halts early voting, but Escambia County extends poll hours to ensure access
ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The extreme winter weather interrupted just about everything this week in Northwest Florida, including early voting for next week’s congressional primary election.
Republican voters are being asked to decide on a candidate to fill the seat vacated by Matt Gaetz.
“It was something new for all of us,” said Robert Bender, Escambia County Supervisor of Elections. “I called the state last week and said, ‘I think we’re gonna have an event that we’ve never had in Florida elections before’ — and that is being closed for a snow storm.”
Bender says the second they saw the forecast, they began preparations.
“We expanded hours early on the front end so that it would give voters an opportunity to come in before the snow storm,” he said.
Many voters took advantage of that opportunity.
“We did hear from a lot of people that they were coming in and getting it out of the way ahead of the snow storm,” Bender said. “And it showed in our numbers. Compared to March, we actually doubled the numbers of voters on a Sunday than what we had in March.”
Just in case you haven’t already, there’s still time to cast your vote.
The poll hours have also been extended these last two days: opening from 7a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We think everyone has had an opportunity to vote if they want to, especially being open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and tomorrow,” Bender said.
Due to a severe winter storm hitting the area, early voting in Escambia County has been temporarily halted for the safety of voters and poll workers. However, in order to ensure that all residents have access to the polls, Escambia County has announced that they will be extending poll hours.This decision was made to accommodate any voters who may have been unable to make it to the polls earlier in the day due to the inclement weather. By extending the hours, the county is ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to cast their vote in this important election.
Escambia County officials are urging residents to stay safe and only venture out if absolutely necessary. They are also encouraging voters to take advantage of the extended hours to make their voices heard in this election.
Despite the challenges posed by the winter storm, Escambia County is committed to ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process. The extended poll hours are just one way that they are working to make that happen.

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The City of Pensacola is announcing additional closures and cancellations as the winter storm nears.
City offices and facilities will now be operating at reduced capacity on Wednesday as well as Tuesday.
Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves urges residents to stay off the roads once the snow begins Tuesday morning.
“For your safety and the safety of our city employees and first responder, please stay off the roads during and immediately following this extreme weather,” he said. “Our team is working around the clock and will continue to to do so to bring our roadways back to safe conditions. I ask that you please respect those efforts and the safety of your friends, family and neighbors.”
The closures include:
- City of Pensacola administrative offices, including departments and divisions not located at City Hall
- City Hall
- City of Pensacola community resource centers
Exceptions:
- Essential departments including Pensacola Fire Department and Pensacola Police Department will remain operational
- Pensacola International Airport will remain open. Check with airlines about potential flight delays. Pensacola International Airport Administration Offices will be closed.
“The City of Pensacola is ready to respond to this storm. However, much like following a tropical storm or hurricane, there will be delays in restoring services and clearing roadways,” the city said. “We ask for your patience as cleanup begins following the end of this winter storm.”
Starting Tuesday morning, Pensacola Police will have increased staffing “to ensure an effective law enforcement response to any emergency.”
The city says Pensacola Police is ready to assist and has proactively deployed their Community Response Specialist team to canvass areas of the city in search of unsheltered individuals seeking refuge from the severe winter weather. PPD can be reached by contacting the non emergency number (850) 435-1845 or 911 in an emergency.
Additionally, Pensacola Police has cold-weather supplies to offer to those who have declined offers of emergency shelter.
The Pensacola Fire Department will be staffed in both the north and south divisions:
- 2 additional engine companies, as well as command and logistics added
- 55 PFD fire/rescue personnel will be on duty during the winter storm, which is 18 over daily operations
City Public Works
Public Works crews have heavy equipment and vehicles ready to deploy sand and salt to de-ice the City’s priority roadways and bridges, such as the 12th Avenue Bridge and Summit Boulevard which are main corridors for emergency services.
Public Works is also coordinating with the local office of the Florida Department of Transportation to ensure anti-icing pre-treatment is done to all FDOT bridges and overpasses before the weather event occurs. The local interstates are a priority for these crews.
Nearly three dozen Public Works staff are standing by to deploy to ensure roadways are passable.
City Sanitation Services
City of Pensacola Sanitation Services is now currently planning on collecting Monday’s routes on Thursday and Tuesday’s routes on Friday.
Sanitation Services will have customer service representatives available to answer calls. They can be reached at 850-435-1890.
