    Jack Eichel has been starving. The 4 Nations Face-Off is his sustenance.

    The Vegas Golden Knights center said he has waited years for another “best-on-best” hockey tournament for himself and his peers. “The generation of the players that are currently in the NHL haven’t had that opportunity to all play together,” he told ESPN.

    The NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off brings together four hockey powers — the U.S., Canada, Sweden and Finland — in a midseason tournament played in Montreal and Boston. Now Eichel gets to wear the red, white and blue with Auston Matthews and Jack Hughes. Connor McDavid gets to wear the maple leaf next to Nathan MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby. William Nylander shares a Swedish locker room with Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson. Aleksander Barkov can sling passes to Mikko Rantanen and Patrik Laine.

    The players acknowledge the 4 Nations Face-Off is more borne out of necessity — a combination of compressed scheduling and the conundrum of Russian participation — than an ideal best-on-best event.

    “Obviously it’s not exactly what we want in terms of … we’re missing some great teams. I think of the Germany or Switzerland or the Czechs, so many different teams,” McDavid told ESPN. “But it’s just exciting to have best-on-best again. You know, four great teams. It’ll be a pretty fun competition and a prelude to the Olympics.”

    How will the 4 Nations Face-Off play out, starting tonight with Canada vs. Sweden at Bell Centre?

    The 4 Nations Face-Off is set to be an exciting tournament featuring some of the best teams in international hockey. With so much talent on display, predicting the outcome of each game is no easy task. However, we are going to give it our best shot and try to forecast the winners of every match in the tournament.

    First up, we have the opening game between Team Canada and Team USA. Both teams are perennial powerhouses in international hockey, but we are going to give the edge to Canada in this matchup. With a roster stacked with NHL talent, including the likes of Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby, we think Canada will come out on top in a close game.

    Next, we have Team Russia taking on Team Sweden. This is sure to be a tightly contested game, but we are going to give the slight edge to Russia. With their dynamic offense led by players like Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, we think Russia will be able to outscore Sweden and secure the win.

    In the final game of the tournament, we have Team Finland facing off against Team Czech Republic. This game is a tough one to call, but we are going to predict that Finland will come out on top. With a strong defensive core and a potent offensive attack, we think Finland will be able to edge out the Czech Republic and finish the tournament on a high note.

    Of course, these predictions are just our best guesses and anything can happen in the world of hockey. We can’t wait to see how the tournament unfolds and which teams will come out on top in the 4 Nations Face-Off.

  • Finland rules out Jani Hakanpää for the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off


    Finland ruled out Jani Hakanpaa for the 4 Nations Face-Off, making management find replacements for two injured defensemen.

    The Finnish Ice Hockey Federation confirmed Saturday that Hakanpää will not play in the NHL-run tournament later this month in Montreal and Boston. Hakanpää has appeared in only two games this season for Toronto and none since mid-November because of a lower-body injury.

    Miro Heiskanen would have been Finland’s No. 1 defenseman, but he was injured on a hit by Mark Stone in Dallas’ game against Vegas on Tuesday night. The Stars listed Heiskanen as week to week with a lower-body injury, and Finland acknowledged he won’t be playing 4 Nations.

    “He’s that type of player that any team in the world would love to have,” captain Aleksander Barkov said Thursday of Heiskanen. “He is a leader defensively and really good offensively, so he’s a huge part of Team Finland’s success. … All the best and try and get back as soon as possible and as healthy as possible. Health is the most important thing.”

    General manager Jere Lehtinen, who built Finland’s roster that won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2022 when the NHL pulled out late because of pandemic-related scheduling reasons, said replacements would be named next week for Heiskanen and Hakanpää. There are only four eligible players to choose from for the two spots; only 11 Finnish defensemen have played in the league this season.

    Buffalo’s Henri Jokiharju, Ottawa’s Nikolas Matinpalo, Winnipeg’s Ville Heinola and the New York Rangers‘ Urho Vaakanainen are the possible replacements. Jokiharju and Vaakanainen, who was traded from Anaheim to New York in December, have the most professional experience of the four.

    Finland opens Feb. 13 against the U.S., plays rival Sweden on Feb. 15 and finishes round-robin play Feb. 17 against Canada.

    Sweden also has a few injury situations to monitor. Vegas’ William Karlsson and Minnesota’s Jonas Brodin remain out, and Boston’s Hampus Lindholm is close to returning from his absence. Canada must still name a replacement for two-time Stanley Cup champion and 2014 Olympic gold medalist Alex Pietrangelo, who withdrew “to tend to an ailment and prepare for the remainder of the regular season,” the Golden Knights said.

    Pep Guardiola has lauded Erling Haaland for showing self-control despite his rough treatment from Premier League defenders doing whatever they can to stop the Manchester City striker.

    One of the few times Haaland’s discipline has lapsed was in the reverse fixture against Sunday’s opponents, Arsenal, earlier this season, when he was involved in a match-long physical battle with the centre-backs Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba. When John Stones scored a 97th-minute equaliser for City, Haaland threw the ball at the back of the Brazilian’s head while celebrating. That sparked a heated confrontation before the striker told the Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, to “stay humble” after the final whistle.

    “The game was emotional for Erling and it’s not easy when you have 90 minutes and you know Gabriel and the central defenders push him and hug him and hug him and kiss him, and these kinds of things,” Guardiola said. “He had to react. Arsenal are a physical team – in a good way in many aspects – and at the end what happened through the emotions happened. So it’s done.”

    Haaland has an impressive disciplinary record, collecting only two bookings in 32 appearances for City this season. “I’m surprised how he can control his emotions because with every action he’s pulled and he’s pulled and the referee is always ‘play on’,” Guardiola said. “How many times does it happen? And always he never complains, he controls himself so talking of a reaction on one day is not real. It’s not about what Erling does [did] for one day. He behaves incredibly well.

    “He stands up, he knows it’s going to happen, the Premier League is that way. You have to stand up and continue, continue, continue and defend your position. It’s always what he has done. So for one day am I going to adjudicate on what he’s done? Come on, I don’t buy it.”

    City have made three signings in January but Guardiola doubts they will be able to find someone to fill Rodri’s void before the transfer window closes on Monday night. The Spanish midfielder suffered a cruciate ligament injury against Arsenal in September and City have suffered without him.

    Reports in Spain suggested Guardiola had spoken to Sergio Busquets about moving to England from Inter Miami, an idea the City head coach refutes. “He is so happy in Miami,” Guardiola said. “The weather there is so delightful. I spoke to Sergio, not for that issue.”

  • Finland’s Jani Hakanpaa pulls out of 4 Nations Face-Off due to injury


    Team Finland’s blue line just took another hit.

    The 32-year-old was set to represent Finland in less than two weeks at the inaugural best-on-best event but nagging knee problems have taken that opportunity away.

    Hakanpaa has missed all but two games this season because of his injury and on Friday head coach Craig Berube made it clear that a return for the D-man in the coming days was already less than likely.

    “Really, I don’t have a timeline for him. I really, I don’t,” Berube said when asked about Hakanpaa’s status, who hasn’t played since Nov. 16.

    The 6-foot-6 defenceman signed with the Maple Leafs in September on a one-year, $1.47 million deal after three seasons with the Dallas Stars. He was originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round of the 2010 Entry Draft. The Ducks traded Hakanpaa mid-way through his sophomore season and then he signed with Dallas that summer.

    Hakanpaa has 45 points through 290 NHL games (15 goals, 30 assists).

    His absence will be felt by Finland who are already down Hakanpaa’s former Stars’ teammate Miro Heiskanen. The defenceman is currently week-to-week with a lower-body injury due to an on-ice collision against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. He then pulled out from the tournament two days later.

    The 4 Nations tournament runs Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston. It’s the first international best-on-best tournament in nearly a decade.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Ruled Out of 4 Nations Face-Off


    It’s been a difficult year of injury for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jani Hakanpaa. The veteran blue liner has been held to just two regular season contests in his first season in Toronto as he battles through various injuries and ailments.

    The 32-year-old’s season has received another blow as it’s been shared that he’s been ruled out for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

    There was minimal hope that the Maple Leafs’ defenseman would be ready to go, but Hakanpaa and his native country of Finland were clinging on to it. With the pool of active NHL defensemen from Finland being drastically thin, the Finns were desperate not to replace him. Unfortunately, Hakanpaa’s not cleared to play and will miss the tournament. NHL insider Chris Johnston shared the disappointing update via his X account.

    “Jani Hakanpää has been ruled out of the 4 Nations Face-Off because of his ongoing injury issues,” he wrote. “Finland now needs two replacements on “D” with Miro Heiskanen already out.”

    As Johnston indicates, Finland must now find two more defensemen to fill out their tournament roster. Henri Jokiharju of the Buffalo Sabres is a logical next choice, but the final defenseman to make the squad is likely down to Urho Vakaanainen of the New York Rangers or Ville Heinola of the Winnipeg Jets.

    Hakanpaa was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues. He wouldn’t make his NHL debut until nearly a decade later, however, when he played in five games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2019-2020.

    Where he’s grown his reputation as a stay-at-home defender was with the Dallas Stars over the past few seasons. He skated in 80, 82, and 64 games in each of this three seasons with the Stars, and developed a physical and gritty style of defense that goaltenders and coaches love to have. Now Finland will need to replace him and hope their blue line can hold up at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

    Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman, Jake Muzzin, has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament due to an undisclosed injury. The news comes as a blow to both the Maple Leafs and Team Canada, as Muzzin was expected to be a key player in the tournament.

    The Wild (31-17-4) and Senators (27-20-4) each will look to win a fourth straight game. Minnesota is 3-0-0 so far on a five-game road trip, with wins at the Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. The Wild are 20-5-3 on the road — the most road wins away from home in the NHL this season. They were 19-18-4 on the road all of last season. The Senators enter Saturday in third place in the Atlantic Division. The last time Ottawa sat third or higher in the Atlantic was April 9, 2017.

    New York Islanders at Tampa Bay Lightning (7 p.m. ET; FDSNSUN, MSGSN)

    The Islanders (23-20-7) look to make it seven straight wins and five straight on the road when they play the first of a back-to-back set in Florida. It’s New York’s longest winning streak since winning six straight from April 1-11 last season. Goalie Ilya Sorokin is 5-0-0 with a 0.99 goals-against average, .964 save percentage and one shutout in his past five games (four starts). The Lightning (27-20-3) were 1-4-0 in their previous five games before a 3-0 home win against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

    Nashville Predators at Pittsburgh Penguins (7 p.m. ET; FSSNSO, SN-PIT)

    The Predators (18-25-7) have lost three in a row, including 4-3 at the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, after a five-game winning streak. The Penguins (21-24-8) will look to string together consecutive wins behind Sidney Crosby, who was named Team Canada’s captain for the 4 Nations Face-Off on Thursday. The Pittsburgh captain scored the winning goal in a 3-2 victory at the Utah Hockey Club on Wednesday; it was his 95th NHL game-winning goal, moving him past Steve Yzerman for 13th most in League history.

    Los Angeles Kings at Carolina Hurricanes (7 p.m. ET; FDSNSO, KCAL)

    The Kings (26-17-6) will try to end a season-long four-game losing streak, which includes two straight shutouts, 3-0 at the Florida Panthers on Wednesday and 3-0 at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. The Hurricanes (32-16-4) have won two straight and will try to extend a seven-game point streak (6-0-1). Forward Mikko Rantanen has a goal and an assist in three games since being acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in a three-team trade also involving the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 24.

    Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton Oilers (7 p.m. ET; CBC, SNE, SNO, SNP)

    This will be the 19th meeting between captains Connor McDavid of the Oilers (32-15-4) and Auston Matthews of the Maple Leafs (30-19-2). McDavid has 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in those games and Matthews has 20 points (13 goals, seven assists). Matthews enters with the better head-to-head record, going 12-4-2 in those games; McDavid is 6-10-2. Toronto has lost three straight; Edmonton enters on a four-game point streak (3-1-0).



    The Florida Panthers are set to take on the Chicago Blackhawks in an exciting match-up tonight, with a total of 8 players from 4 different nations facing off on the ice. The Panthers, led by their star players from Finland, Sweden, Russia, and the United States, are looking to secure a win on home ice against the Blackhawks.

  • Conor McGregor, NBA 7-footer have courtside faceoff during game


    The Milwaukee Bucks and Utah Jazz were in the middle of a game Monday night when UFC star Conor McGregor caught the attention of players on the Bucks’ bench in a most unexpected way.

    In a sequence visible on the broadcast, McGregor appeared from out of nowhere and casually walked along the bench while action was happening on the court. It’s not like they were in the middle of a timeout; the game was being played!

    McGregor was seen staring back at Bucks players when he turned and walked toward Brook Lopez. And in that moment, McGregor and the 7-foot-1 center sized each other up and had themselves a courtside faceoff.

    After the Bucks’ 125-10 victory, Lopez described what happened in the moment.

    “He asked me to stand up, and I did,” Lopez told reporters in the locker room. “I knew at that point, once I got up, I had to size him up. I had to do a little something. I’ve seen the faceoffs before, so I knew I had to do my part.”

    Considering McGregor is a defendant in a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct at a 2023 NBA Finals game, it’s somewhat surprising to find out an NBA team would greenlight a promotional appearance by McGregor at one of its games.

  • Oilers-Avalanche showdown will have 8 players heading to 4 Nations Face-Off


    The 4 Nations Face-Off will feature some of the greatest talent in the NHL going head-to-head in Montreal and Boston from Feb. 12-20.

    On Thursday, fans will get somewhat of a preview when the Edmonton Oilers play the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena in Denver (9:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN1).

    Oilers center Connor McDavid, Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon and defensemen Cale Makar and Devon Toews will be playing for Canada, and Colorado forward Mikko Rantanen will be playing for Finland.

    Add in German-born Edmonton superstar Leon Draisaitl, and the talent on the ice will make for must-watch TV.

    “It’s always fun, they’re a great challenge,” McDavid said of facing the Avalanche. “Whenever you get that many stars in one game, it’s always fun.”

    Edmonton and Colorado have recent history in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to fuel their rivalry, meeting in the 2022 Western Conference Final. The Avalanche cruised in a four-game sweep on their way to winning the Cup.

    The Oilers reached the Stanley Cup Final last season, losing 2-1 in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers. Edmonton is looking for a return trip and may have to go through Colorado this time around.

    “I think it’s exciting, always to play against those guys,” Rantanen said. “They’re obviously very, very good players. To match up against them and try to (win), they always have good games against us. It’s pretty high-emotion, lot of little chippiness because they’re obviously a really good team. They were really close last year to winning it all, so they have some swagger in their play.

    “But I think it’s fun to play against them, even though it’s kind of is not fun because there’s really good players. But it’s fun to watch them close and try to close them down.”

    Thursday is the second of three games between the teams this season; Edmonton (28-13-3) won 4-1 at Colorado (27-17-1) on Nov. 30. McDavid had an assist; Draisaitl and MacKinnon were held off the score sheet for one of the few times this season.

    The Oilers will host the conclusion of the season series Feb. 7 before eight players from the respective clubs — also including Avalanche forward Artturi Lehkonen (Finland), Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm and forward Viktor Arvidsson (Sweden) — convene for the 4 Nations Face-Off.

    “It’s a great challenge, that five-man unit they put out there with MacKinnon, Makar and Toews and Rantanen and all those guys, it’s pretty tough,” McDavid said. “It makes for fun hockey.”

    The game features four of the past five Hart Trophy winners in MacKinnon (2024), McDavid (2023, 2021), and Draisaitl (2020). All three are in contention to be named most valuable player again this season.

    Makar, who won the Norris Trophy as the League’s top defenseman in 2022, has 50 points (13 goals, 37 assists) in 45 games this season, tied for the League lead in scoring among defensemen with Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets (15 goals, 35 assists in 44 games). Toews has 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) in 41 games.

    MacKinnon leads the NHL with 70 points (15 goals, 55 assists) in 45 games; Rantanen is fourth with 61 points (25 goals, 36 assists).

    “I’m trying to be at my best, I’m trying to be at 100 percent every night,” MacKinnon said. “Some days you just don’t have your best, and you have to do your best with what you have, and I think that’s how you are consistent. Because with this schedule, you’re never going to be 100 percent, but you can’t let perfect get in the way of really good or great, so that’s kind of what I’m trying to be at.”

    Meanwhile, Draisaitl is second in the League with 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) in 44 games; McDavid is fourth with 62 points (19 goals, 43 assists) in 41 games. The Oilers are 15-3-1 in their past 19 games.

    “Yeah, it’s always a challenge; they’re really good players obviously, and that (top) line (Jonathan Drouin-MacKinnon-Rantanen) is as dynamic as it gets,” Draisaitl said. “It’s always a challenge against them and we have lots of great players ourselves.”
