  • Jack Draper next match: Date, time and how to watch Australian Open third round tie as Brit faces another home favourite

Jack Draper is the undisputed British number one, and he’s one of the top seeds for the 2025 Australian Open.

The 23-year-old made great progress at the US Open last year, reaching the semi-finals before losing in straight sets to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

It was an agonising end for Draper, but he still made huge steps in his young career throughout 2024.

This sets him up for a big year, starting with the Australian Open.

There were some doubts over if he would be fit, but he’s up and running in Melbourne.

Jack Draper at 2025 Australian Open: Ranking

As it stands, Draper is currently ranked as the 18th-best men’s singles player in the world.

This sees him above the likes of Ben Shelton and Arthur Fils, while he is comfortably the British number one.

His nearest challenger is Cameron Norrie who is down in 52nd.

This means Draper is seeded for the Australian Open, along with Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Sinner.

Jack Draper at 2025 Australian Open: Next opponent

Draper is the 15th seed but has needed five sets to see off his opponents in the first two rounds.

First, he beat Argentina’s Mariano Navone, who is the world No.47 and was making his Australian Open debut, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

And in the second round he beat Australian home favourite and world No.71 Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Draper will now take on another Aussie in the form of Aleksandar Vukic who is ranked 68 in the world.

That match will be held on Friday at the Margaret Court Arena and play is expected to begin at 9:30am UK time.

Should Draper win, he will face four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round.

Alcaraz beat Nuno Borges in four sets to make it through.

Jack Draper at 2025 Australian Open: What has been said?

Draper conjured the spirit of Andy Murray to claw his way back from the brink of defeat against Kokkinakis.

Two years ago, Murray famously recovered from two sets and a break down against Kokkinakis to win a second-round match that finished at 4.05am.

Asked by John McEnroe in his on-court interview how he had pulled off the comeback, Draper said: “I don’t know, it was a really tough match. Thanasi is an unbelievable player, someone I have great respect for.

“I’m really proud of the way I competed today and I eventually came through. I’m very happy about that.

“I’m getting better each set and I’m really proud of the way I’m going about my tennis.

“I didn’t know if I was going to be fit to come here. I know that my tennis is improving, this match would have really helped me again.

“My first match was four hours and I don’t want to be out here for that long.

“But I’m getting better with each set and I’m really proud with the way I’m going about my tennis.”

  • Mike Johnson faces leadership test as US House begins new session with vote | House of Representatives

Mike Johnson faces leadership test as US House begins new session with vote | House of Representatives

The US House of Representatives will begin its new session on Friday with a dramatic speakership vote that could either cement Republican Mike Johnson’s leadership or plunge Congress into turmoil, as Republican dissent threatens his hold on power.

As the House’s first order of business – which is scheduled to begin around noon Eastern time – members must elect a speaker before they can be sworn in. Each representative will stand to declare their choice in a roll call vote, with Johnson needing a majority of all members voting to secure victory.

Johnson faces a close mathematical path to victory. With Republicans holding a slim 219-215 majority, and Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie already declaring his opposition, Johnson can’t afford to lose a single additional vote without risking multiple rounds of voting reminiscent of last session’s speaker election chaos.

Assuming all 434 current House members participate (there is one vacancy), Johnson needs 218 votes to win. With Democrats expected to unite behind their leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, and Massie planning to vote against him, Johnson starts with exactly 218 potential votes – the bare minimum needed. Any additional defection would deny him a majority and force a second ballot.

However, members can vote “present” instead of naming a candidate, which would lower the threshold needed for victory by reducing the total number of votes cast for candidates.

Several prominent Republicans remain noncommittal, including Texas representative Chip Roy, Arizona representative Andy Biggs, Pennsylvania representative Scott Perry, Indiana representative Victoria Spartz and House Freedom caucus chair Andy Harris from Maryland – despite Johnson receiving Donald Trump’s endorsement earlier this week.

Johnson’s team has reportedly been working frantically behind the scenes, conducting last-minute negotiations with various Republican factions to secure their support.

Much of his support came tumbling down in the last year, after helping Democrats usher in billions of aid to Ukraine in the spring against conservative wishes and caving to billionaire GOP mega-donor Elon Musk for compromises on short-term government spending last month.

Because of those deals, some Republicans including Spartz are seeking assurances on cuts to government spending to deliver on Trump’s agenda.

“If Speaker Johnson wants to be speaker, then he needs to lay out a plan and commit to that plan, not like what he did last year,” Spartz said on Fox News earlier this week. “I can give him a chance, but I would like to hear from him how he’s going to be delivering this agenda.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

If Johnson fails to secure a majority on the first ballot, the House would enter a state of limbo, unable to conduct any other business until a speaker is elected.

The last speaker election in January 2023 required 15 rounds of voting before former speaker Kevin McCarthy was confirmed. Johnson emerged as a compromise candidate in October of that year following McCarthy’s removal from the position, when eight Republicans went rogue to vote alongside Democrats – the first such ouster in American political history.

As the US House of Representatives begins a new session with a crucial vote looming, all eyes are on Mike Johnson as he faces a leadership test. Johnson, a Republican congressman from Louisiana, has been a prominent figure in the House and has often been touted as a potential rising star in the GOP.

With the House set to vote on key legislation that could have far-reaching implications for the country, Johnson’s leadership skills will truly be put to the test. As the Chair of the Republican Study Committee, he will play a pivotal role in rallying support for the party’s agenda and ensuring that they can effectively push through their priorities.

The outcome of this vote could have a significant impact on Johnson’s political future and his standing within the party. Will he be able to successfully navigate the challenges ahead and emerge as a strong and effective leader, or will he falter under the pressure?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – all eyes will be on Mike Johnson as the US House of Representatives begins its new session with a vote that could shape the course of the country for years to come. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Thailand faces economic headwinds in 2025 amid global uncertainties

Thailand faces economic headwinds in 2025 amid global uncertainties

Thailand’s economy faces significant challenges in 2025, with experts projecting growth rates between 2.05% and 2.7% amid global uncertainties and the return of Donald Trump as US president.

Att Pisanwanich, adviser at Intelligent Company Research Consultant (IRC), warns that Thailand could experience its slowest growth rate in seven years. He identifies five key risk factors: high household debt, investment policy uncertainties, Trump’s fiscal policies, Chinese economic challenges, and escalating geopolitical conflicts.

    Att Pisanwanich

Export prospects appear to be of particular concern, with Att forecasting just 1.9% growth due to proposed US tariff increases. Six major product categories face potential 10% tariffs, including electrical appliances, auto parts, and rubber products. This could result in Thailand’s highest trade deficit with China in six years, exceeding 1.6 trillion baht.

    Somprawin Manprasert

Somprawin Manprasert, chief economist at SCB EIC, has revised the global economic growth forecast for 2025 from 2.8% to 2.5%. He anticipates that Trump’s policies will intensify trade protectionism and geopolitical tensions, affecting trade, investment, and labour markets globally. SCB EIC expects one policy rate cut to 2% in February 2025, with the Thai baht projected to range between 33.50-34.50 against the US dollar by the year-end.

    Piti Srisangnam

Piti Srisangnam, executive director of the ASEAN Foundation, outlines two potential scenarios: Trade War 3.0, or US-China benefit sharing. Under Trade War 3.0, US tariffs on Chinese imports could reach 60%, severely impacting Thai exports and domestic markets. Even in a more optimistic benefit-sharing scenario, Thailand would face increased competition and potential market displacement.

Thailand, a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and delicious cuisine, is facing economic headwinds in 2025 as the global economy continues to face uncertainties.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Thailand’s economy, with the country’s tourism industry being hit particularly hard. Travel restrictions and lockdowns have led to a sharp decline in the number of international visitors, causing a massive drop in tourism revenue.

In addition to the challenges posed by the pandemic, Thailand is also facing other economic headwinds, including rising inflation, high levels of household debt, and a slowdown in global trade. These factors have put pressure on the country’s economic growth and raised concerns about its long-term economic prospects.

To address these challenges, the Thai government is implementing various measures to stimulate economic growth, including fiscal stimulus packages, monetary easing, and structural reforms. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain, given the ongoing global economic uncertainties.

As Thailand navigates its way through these economic headwinds, it is crucial for the government to adopt a comprehensive and coordinated approach to address the challenges facing the economy. By implementing sound economic policies and reforms, Thailand can weather the storm and emerge stronger in the post-pandemic world.

  • Second Jeju Air 737-800 faces mechanical trouble • The Register

Second Jeju Air 737-800 faces mechanical trouble • The Register

The disastrous crash of a Boeing 737-800 in South Korea over the weekend, which killed 179 of the 181 people onboard, was followed by a second incident involving Jeju Air. On Monday, the flight was forced to return to its origin due to a reportedly similar landing gear issue.

It’s still not clear what caused Jeju Air flight 7C2216, originating in Bangkok, Thailand, to crash Sunday at Muan International Airport in South Korea shortly before landing. Preliminary investigation of video footage of the accident, however, suggests multiple factors leading to the crash, in which only two flight attendants seated at the rear of the plane survived.

According to reports describing the leadup to the crash, 7C2216 was warned of bird activity in the area, followed by a report from the aircraft that, despite the warning, it had struck a bird. Aviation experts at FlightRadar24 said the craft made a low-altitude flyover of the airport, likely in an attempt to have officials on the ground confirm the state of the plane and suggest next steps.

FlightRadar24 said that ADS-B broadcasts from 7C2216 stopped during its flyover, which could have multiple explanations, “including loss of electrical power to the transponder, a wider electrical failure, or pilot action on the flight deck,” the flight tracking site explained.

Regardless of the reason, video of the crash landing on 7C2216’s second approach showed that the landing gear on the aircraft wasn’t deployed, and flaps and slats used to slow the aircraft appeared to be stowed. After landing, 7C2216 crashed into a concrete barricade and burst into a fireball, killing nearly everyone onboard.

To make matters worse, this could have been the first of a pair of accidents involving a Jeju Air flight, as yesterday, a second flight was forced to return to its point of origin after allegedly suffering a similar landing gear issue.

Jeju Air flight 7C101, from Seoul to Jeju Island, experienced a mechanical issue with its landing gear on Monday morning local time. The aircraft, another Boeing 737-800, was able to resolve the matter but returned to Gimpo Airport as a precautionary measure to switch aircraft.

    Answers likely to take time

Given two similar incidents with two Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 aircraft in as many days, South Korean officials aren’t taking any chances and have decided to inspect every single 737-800 in use by the country’s airlines. That will amount to the review of 101 737-800 aircraft, 39 of which are operated by Jeju Air.

Whether the issue could be another snag for Boeing, which has faced considerable scrutiny following a pair of crashes and mechanical issues in recent years, isn’t immediately clear, and the aerospace firm didn’t address such a possibility when asked.

“Consistent with US law and the UN International Civil Aviation Organization protocol known as Annex 13, we will refer you to Korean authorities for any information about the accident,” a Boeing spokesperson told The Register when asked whether the accident could be due to issues with the 737-800 or problems at Jeju Air.

“We are in contact with Jeju Air regarding flight 2216 and stand ready to support them,” the spokesperson added. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones, and our thoughts remain with the passengers and crew.”

While it wouldn’t comment on the possibility of additional issues with Boeing aircraft, the company did point us to the National Transportation Safety Board’s statement indicating NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration officials, along with Boeing employees, were on the way to South Korea to assist in the examination of the 7C2216 wreckage – a process that’s unlikely to be quick.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the aircraft’s flight data recorder was damaged in the crash, and was found to be missing a connector that links its data storage unit to its power supply. Retrieving data from the unit will be complicated by the damage, may necessitate sending it to the US for extraction. The cockpit voice recorder is reportedly in better condition.

US and Boeing investigators, along with 11 members of South Korea’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, are still inspecting the wreckage at the site of the accident in an attempt to piece together clues as to what caused the deadly failure. ®

Second Jeju Air 737-800 faces mechanical trouble

Another Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air has been reported to have faced mechanical trouble, just days after a similar incident involving another aircraft from the same airline. The aircraft was scheduled to fly from Incheon International Airport to Jeju International Airport when the issue was discovered during pre-flight checks.

The specific nature of the mechanical problem has not been disclosed, but the airline has stated that the safety of its passengers is their top priority and that the necessary repairs will be made before the aircraft is cleared to fly again. Passengers on the affected flight were accommodated on other flights to their destination.

This incident comes as a concern for both Jeju Air and Boeing, as the 737-800 model has been under scrutiny following the fatal crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. The airline has assured passengers that they are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their fleet.

As investigations continue to determine the cause of the mechanical issues, passengers are advised to stay updated on any updates or changes to their flight schedules. Jeju Air has apologized for the inconvenience caused and is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
