  • Falcons & Michael Penix will be “relevant for next decade”

When The Morning Shift asked CBS Sports Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco what he thought about the Falcons hiring Jeff Ulbrich to be their defensive coordinator, Prisco said he thinks Ulbrich is a good coach, that the pairing of him and Raheem Morris will work, and that it’s a “good situation” for Ulbrich as well. Then Prisco went on to talk about the reason he thinks the Falcons should be “thrilled” right now.

“The Falcons gotta be thrilled man they got their quarterback,” Prisco said. “You know, look everything else that happens from here on out in the next decade you got your quarterback again. I mean you got that guy, and that guy will cure your ills, and you know bad ones usually expose them, but you now have the quarterback and they are going to be relevant for the next decade because they have Michael Penix.”

It’s also easier to solve other problems when you have the main and most important position on a football team figured out, and the Falcons now have that position and other positions figured out. They can hopefully not just be relevant but win with their franchise quarterback for the next decade plus.

The Atlanta Falcons have made a bold move by selecting Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the 2022 NFL Draft. Many experts believe that this decision will prove to be a game-changer for the Falcons and that Penix will be a key player for the team for the next decade.

Penix, known for his strong arm and impressive accuracy, has the potential to become a franchise quarterback for the Falcons. With his leadership skills and football IQ, he is poised to lead the team to success in the coming years.

The Falcons have struggled in recent seasons, but with the addition of Penix, they have a promising future ahead. Fans are excited about the potential of this young quarterback and are eager to see what he can bring to the team.

Penix has the talent and drive to succeed in the NFL, and with the Falcons’ support, he has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the team. The combination of Penix’s skills and the Falcons’ coaching staff make for a winning formula that will keep the team relevant for the next decade.

Overall, the future looks bright for the Falcons with Michael Penix at the helm. Fans can expect to see great things from this dynamic duo in the years to come.

  • Atlanta Falcons’ rookie sensation Michael Penix Jr., applauded by former coach Mike Smith, sparks hope for a resurgence in the franchise’s future

Atlanta Falcons’ Rising Star: Michael Penix Jr.

In his recent debut as a starter for the Atlanta Falcons, Michael Penix Jr. showcased remarkable potential, drawing admiration from former head coach Mike Smith. Smith, a seasoned figure in the football realm, commended Penix for his leadership qualities and impressive arm strength, which became evident during his three-game stint to close the regular season.

Penix’s performance, stepping in for the established Kirk Cousins, was nothing short of promising. Throughout his starts, he exhibited a completion rate of 58%, accumulating 737 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and a rushing score. This display of skill and composure under pressure solidified the belief that Penix, the eighth overall draft pick in 2024, could be the long-awaited answer to the Falcons’ quarterback conundrum.

Raheem Morris’ Optimism for the Future

Looking ahead, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris expressed his enthusiasm for what Penix can bring to the team in the upcoming seasons. Morris’s confidence in Penix’s ability to lead the offense reflects a strategic shift in the Falcons’ quarterback landscape, hinting at a potential changing of the guard.

As the Falcons contemplate their next moves regarding Cousins, options abound, from trading or releasing him to retaining him as a backup. However, with Penix poised to take the reins in 2025, the organization seems committed to nurturing his talent and fostering a new era of Falcons football.

    Mike Smith’s Insightful Perspective

Drawing from his coaching tenure with the Falcons, Smith brings a unique perspective to the discussion surrounding Penix’s emergence. Having been instrumental in drafting franchise quarterback Matt Ryan in 2008, Smith understands the significance of identifying and developing young quarterback talent.

Smith’s vote of confidence in Penix as the future face of the Falcons’ offense underscores the belief that, despite current challenges such as salary cap constraints and dead money issues, Atlanta is on the right path towards revitalizing its team dynamics. The endorsement from a seasoned coach like Smith serves as a testament to Penix’s potential to steer the Falcons towards a brighter future on the gridiron.

In conclusion, Michael Penix Jr.’s meteoric rise in the Atlanta Falcons’ ranks symbolizes a beacon of hope for the franchise and its loyal fan base. With supportive figures like Raheem Morris and Mike Smith backing his journey, Penix stands poised to usher in a new era of success and resilience for the Falcons, marking a promising chapter in the team’s storied history.

The Atlanta Falcons may have found their future star in rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The young sensation has already caught the eye of former coach Mike Smith, who has praised Penix’s talent and potential to lead the team to success.

Smith, who coached the Falcons from 2008 to 2014, recently spoke highly of Penix’s abilities, saying, “Michael Penix Jr. is a special talent and has the potential to be a game-changer for the Falcons. His athleticism, arm strength, and football IQ make him a unique talent that can take this team to new heights.”

Penix, who was drafted by the Falcons in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, has already shown flashes of brilliance in training camp and preseason games. His ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver pinpoint passes has impressed coaches and teammates alike.

With Penix at the helm, the Falcons have a promising future ahead. His dynamic playmaking ability and leadership qualities have sparked hope for a resurgence in the franchise’s fortunes. Fans are eagerly anticipating what the young quarterback can bring to the team and are excited about the potential for success in the upcoming season.

As the Falcons prepare for a new era under Penix’s leadership, there is a sense of optimism and excitement surrounding the team. With the support of former coach Mike Smith and a talented roster around him, Penix has the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the franchise and lead them to glory once again.

  • Bucs, Bowles, Kafka, Martindale, Lions, Falcons, Cardinals

Liam Coen‘s Buccaneers divorce has become one of the most memorable staff separations in recent years. In addition to the Bucs’ OC search, multiple additional fallout items have emerged from Coen backtracking on an extension agreement to accept the Jaguars’ HC offer. Some around the league are now wondering how willing coordinator candidates will be to join up with Todd Bowles, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones writes. Bowles has evaded firing rumors for multiple seasons, though it was quieter on that front in 2024. While it is a bit odd that he continues to win division titles (3-for-3 in that regard), the rumors about the veteran HC’s murky status in Tampa persist.

On that note, Jones adds the Bucs should not be expected to let any coaches out of their contracts to follow Coen to Jacksonville. Bowles, Jason Licht and assistant GM Mike Greenberg attempted to reach Coen on Thursday, when he was supposed to sign his Bucs extension. Coen had already delayed the signing. The one-and-done Tampa Bay OC had even fibbed about a personal matter to continue his Jags negotiations, with ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter indicated during a Pat McAfee Show appearance the Bucs were plenty irked about his exit process.

Here is the latest from the NFC side of the coaching carousel:

    • The Bucs have completed four interviews with outside candidates, but an internal Coen replacement option has surfaced as well. Pass-game coordinator Josh Grizzard is on the radar to be promoted, NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo notes. Grizzard, 34, has been in the NFL since 2017 and joined Bowles’ staff to work under Coen. The Bucs thought they had avoided a scenario in which they use a fourth OC in four seasons, via the Coen agreement, and Mayfield will now have a sixth play-caller since the 2021 campaign. An internal promotion would help ensure some familiarity.
    • Mike Kafka is still in the running for the Saints‘ HC job, though Kellen Moore and Mike McCarthy may be more likely to land the job. If the Giants’ OC were to pull an upset and jump from a 3-14 team to another club’s top coaching job, ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan notes he would be expected to bring Wink Martindale with him as DC. Kafka and Martindale worked together in New York for two seasons, before the latter’s explosive 2024 exit. Martindale, who spent the 2024 season as Michigan’s DC, interviewed for the Colts and Falcons’ DC jobs this month.
    • Acting swiftly to fill the void created when Kelvin Sheppard made the jump to replace Aaron Glenn, the Lions are elevating another recent NFL linebacker. Detroit will promote Shaun Dion Hamilton to its LBs coaching post, 247Sports.com’s Matt Zenitz tweets. Hamilton attempted to make the Lions’ active roster in 2022 but instead found a job on their coaching staff. Dan Campbell hired Hamilton, an ex-Washington defender, as an assistant. He moved up to assistant LBs coach in 2023, and at 29, is climbing the ladder again.
    • The Falcons are making two hires for Jeff Ulbrich‘s defensive staff. They added Mike Rutenberg as pass-game coordinator and Nate Ollie as D-line coach. Rutenberg will follow Ulbrich from the Jets, having coached their linebackers for four seasons. The Robert Saleh hire oversaw the development of Quincy Williams from waiver claim to All-Pro, while Ollie was also on Saleh’s first Jets staff. The Colts hired him as D-line coach in 2022, and he landed with the Texans as assistant D-line coach last year.
    • The Cardinals are losing their linebackers coach to a college coordinator role. Virginia Tech hired Sam Siefkes to be its next DC. Jonathan Gannon had hired Siefkes after two years as a Vikings assistant. Prior to that, he had served in the college ranks, heading up Wofford’s defense. Additionally in Arizona, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson notes the team is not bringing back D-line coach Derrick LeBlanc. On the Dolphins’ staff before heading to Arizona in 2023, LeBlanc had spent nearly two decades at the college level.

Bucs, Bowles, Kafka, Martindale, Lions, Falcons, Cardinals: A Look at the Latest Coaching News

In the world of NFL coaching, there have been some major developments in recent days. From the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Detroit Lions, teams are making big moves to secure their coaching staff for the upcoming season.

First up, the Buccaneers have announced that defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will be returning for another season. Bowles has been instrumental in the team’s success, helping lead them to a Super Bowl victory in 2021. With Bowles at the helm, the Bucs’ defense is sure to remain a force to be reckoned with.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs have made waves by promoting quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka to offensive coordinator. Kafka has been praised for his work with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Chiefs fans are eager to see what he can do in his new role.

Over in Baltimore, the Ravens have hired former Ravens assistant coach Don “Wink” Martindale as their new defensive coordinator. Martindale is known for his aggressive defensive schemes, and he is sure to bring a new level of intensity to the Ravens’ defense.

In Detroit, the Lions have announced the hiring of former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn as their new defensive coordinator. Quinn has a proven track record of success in the NFL, and Lions fans are hopeful that he can help turn around their struggling defense.

And finally, the Arizona Cardinals have promoted quarterbacks coach Sean Kugler to offensive coordinator. Kugler has been with the team since 2019, and his promotion is a sign of the Cardinals’ confidence in his abilities.

With all these coaching changes, it’s clear that teams are not afraid to shake things up in order to find success. As the offseason continues, fans can expect even more moves to be made as teams prepare for the 2022 season.

  • Bucs’ Evans, Falcons’ Robinson among Pro Bowl replacements

NEW YORK — Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans got his 11th straight 1,000-yard season — and now he’s a Pro Bowler for the sixth time.

Evans was named to the Pro Bowl Games on Monday as a replacement player after spots were vacated by this year’s Super Bowl participants — the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs — and because of injuries.

With his sixth selection, Evans tied former Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott for the most in franchise history. Evans missed three full games and much of a fourth because of a hamstring injury but finished with 1,004 receiving yards thanks to a 9-yard catch late in the fourth quarter of Tampa Bay’s season finale.

Also Monday, Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson was named to his first Pro Bowl. He takes the place of Eagles star Saquon Barkley.

New York Giants rookie receiver Malik Nabers was added, becoming the team’s first rookie receiver to make the Pro Bowl since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014.

Washington linebacker Bobby Wagner was named as a replacement for Philadelphia’s Zack Baun, a day after the Commanders lost to the Eagles 55-23 in the NFC Championship Game. This is Wagner’s 10th appearance.

New Orleans center Erik McCoy replaces Philadelphia’s Cam Jurgens and Seattle defensive end Leonard Williams will fill in for Philadelphia’s Jalen Carter. It will be the second trip for each player.

Minnesota offensive tackle Brian O’Neill also made his second Pro Bowl, replacing Philadelphia’s Lane Johnson.

Carolina guard Robert Hunt replaces Philadelphia’s Landon Dickerson and Detroit offensive tackle Taylor Decker replaces injured Lions teammate Penei Sewell.

In the AFC, Miami tight end Jonnu Smith replaces Kansas City’s Travis Kelce. Cleveland offensive guard Joel Bitonio will make his seventh straight appearance when he replaces Kansas City’s Joe Thuney. New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams will make his third straight appearance, filling in for Kansas City’s Chris Jones.

The Pro Bowl Games run Thursday through Sunday in Orlando, Florida, and include skills competitions and a flag football game.

The Pro Bowl rosters are always subject to change, and two standout players have been added as replacements for the upcoming game. Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receiver Mike Evans and Atlanta Falcons’ linebacker Deion Jones have been named as replacements for the Pro Bowl.

Evans, who had a stellar season with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, will be joining the NFC squad as a replacement for injured Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver Davante Adams. Evans has been a consistent playmaker for the Buccaneers and will add another dynamic threat to the NFC offense.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jones has been a key player for the Falcons with his speed and playmaking ability. He will be filling in for Seattle Seahawks’ linebacker Bobby Wagner, who will miss the Pro Bowl due to injury. Jones has been a tackling machine for the Falcons and will bring his intensity to the NFC defense.

Both Evans and Jones have proven themselves as elite players in the NFL, and their addition to the Pro Bowl rosters will surely add excitement to the game. Fans can look forward to seeing these two talented players showcase their skills on the big stage.

  • Report: Cowboys Eye Falcons’ Kevin Koger for OC on Brian Schottenheimer’s Staff | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

The Dallas Cowboys requested an interview with Atlanta Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger regarding the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Koger previously spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021-23 as a tight ends coach before joining the Falcons ahead of their 2024 campaign.

The Cowboys are looking to fill out the staff of Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired as their new head coach on Friday.

Koger previously interviewed for the Cleveland Browns’ opening at offensive coordinator, per Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. The Browns eventually hired tight ends coach and pass game specialist Tommy Rees to fill the role, though.

Before his time with the Falcons and Chargers, Koger was an offensive quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers in 2019 and 2020. He was also on Eastern Kentucky’s coaching staff from 2016-18, working with the team’s wide receivers and taking on special teams coordinator duties in his final year with the school.

Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts averaged just 35.4 receiving yards per game in 2024, but it’s worth noting he was also targeted a career-low 4.4 times each week. Pitts made the most of his limited opportunities, catching a personal-best 63.5 percent of his targets and scoring a career-high four touchdowns.

Koger will likely work closely with Schottenheimer if he’s hired, as Dallas’ new head coach also served as its offensive coordinator in 2023 and 2024.

During the regular season, Dallas’ scoring average of 20.6 points each week ranked No. 21 among all teams.

As the Cowboys attempt to get their offense back on track, they appear to have interest in Koger.

The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly eyeing Atlanta Falcons’ Kevin Koger to join Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff as the new offensive coordinator. Koger, who currently serves as the tight ends coach for the Falcons, is seen as a potential candidate to help revamp the Cowboys’ offensive strategy.

According to sources, the Cowboys are impressed with Koger’s work with the Falcons’ tight ends and believe he could bring a fresh perspective to their offense. With the team looking to bounce back from a disappointing season, adding Koger to the coaching staff could be a step in the right direction.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Cowboys continue their search for a new offensive coordinator. In the meantime, be sure to follow along for all the latest news, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors surrounding the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL.

  • Falcons or 49ers? Deion Sanders’ Retro Nike Sneakers Spark Debate

Deion Sanders has enjoyed an unmatched career in sports. Sanders played in MLB and NFL, worked as a television announcer, and is now in coaching.

Thanks to his long and successful career, many fanbases want to claim “Primetime” as their own team’s hero. That debate is once again flaring up thanks to a retro sneaker release from Nike.

Since Sanders and Nike reunited in 2023, the two partners have worked together on cleats and sneaker releases. Most of the styles have told old stories from Sanders’ legendary career with new colorways.

Deion Sanders' white, black, and red Nike sneakers.

Now, the Nike Air Diamond Turf is coming back in the “Fire Red and Metallic Gold” colorway, and fans are divided. Are the shoes inspired by the Atlanta Falcons or the San Francisco 49ers? Sanders last played for the Falcons in 1993, before spending one season with the 49ers in 1994.

Sanders first debuted the popular cross-trainers when he played for the Falcons. However, the colorway does feature 49ers colors, too. Football fans are furiously pulling out old pictures of Sanders wearing the kicks with the Falcons and the 49ers, even comparing uniform colors.

To further complicate matters, different retailers and media outlets are referring to the “Fire Red and Metallic Gold” colorway as either the “Falcons” or “49ers” colorway.

Deion Sanders' white, black, and red Nike sneakers.

The debate will live on for the foreseeable future, but all football fans and sneakerheads can agree that these old-school sneakers are fire. Best of all, they are dropping just ahead of the NFL’s Conference Championship weekend.

The Nike Air Diamond Turf “Fire Red and Metallic Gold” will be released at 10:00 a.m. EST on Friday, January 24. Online shoppers can buy the sneakers for $150 in adult sizes on the Nike SNKRS website and app.

The product description does not mention any NFL team or city. Instead, it focuses on the design. According to the brand, the iconic cross trainer from 1994 has received a “street-ready refresh.”

Additionally, this version features Air units in the heel and forefoot, plus durable leather and a midfoot strap for a secure fit. Lastly, the description leaves the name to interpretation, “And that colorway? Same as the original.”

This colorway sports a white and black upper, contrasted by Fire Red accents and Metallic Gold detailing. Such important elements like the Nike Air logo, forefoot strap, and signature branding remain true to the original.

Sanders and Nike made history in the mid-1990s, and they are still proving to be a formidable team this decade. Stay locked into Sports Illustrated’s Kicks On SI for all your footwear news from the sports world and beyond.

The debate has been settled. Nike promoted Sanders’ sneakers with an Instagram post highlighting his time in Atlanta with the Braves and Falcons. Now that the Falcons have received a colorway, hopefully, that means the 49ers will get a colorway as well.

Deion Sanders is a legendary NFL player who has left a lasting impact on the game of football. Recently, a pair of his retro Nike sneakers has sparked a debate among fans: Falcons or 49ers?

Sanders played for both the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers during his illustrious career, so it’s no surprise that fans are split on which team they associate with him more. The sneakers in question feature both teams’ colors and logos, making it difficult for fans to choose a side.

Some fans argue that Sanders had his best years with the 49ers, winning a Super Bowl with the team in 1994. They believe that the red and gold colorway of the sneakers represents his time in San Francisco and should be the preferred choice for fans.

On the other hand, fans of the Falcons point to Sanders’ electrifying play and larger-than-life personality during his time in Atlanta. They argue that the black and red colorway of the sneakers pays homage to his roots with the Falcons and should be the top choice for fans.

Ultimately, the debate over Falcons or 49ers will continue to rage on among fans of Deion Sanders. One thing is for certain, though: no matter which team fans associate him with, Sanders will always be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever step foot on the football field.

    Halftime Report

San Diego State is on the road but looking no worse for wear. They have jumped out to a quick 35-31 lead against Air Force.

If San Diego State keeps playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 12-5 in no time. On the other hand, Air Force will have to make due with a 3-16 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    Who’s Playing

San Diego State Aztecs @ Air Force Falcons

Current Records: San Diego State 11-5, Air Force 3-15

    How To Watch

    • When: Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at 10 p.m. ET
    • Where: Clune Arena — Colorado Springs, Colorado

    • Live Stream: CBSSports.com or fuboTV (Try for free. Regional restrictions may apply.)
    • Ticket Cost: $7.70

    What to Know

San Diego State is 10-0 against Air Force since January of 2019, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. Both will face off in a Mountain West battle at 10:00 p.m. ET at Clune Arena. Despite being away, the Aztecs are looking at a 13.5-point advantage in the spread.

The experts predicted San Diego State would be headed in after a victory, but UNLV made sure that didn’t happen. San Diego State fell 76-68 to UNLV on Saturday.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Nick Boyd, who earned 16 points in addition to five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Jared Coleman-Jones, who earned eight points along with seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, Air Force’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their eighth straight loss. They took a 74-65 hit to the loss column at the hands of Fresno State.

Like San Diego State, Air Force lost despite seeing results from several players. Ethan Taylor led the charge by scoring 16 points along with six assists and two steals. Luke Kearney was another key player, dropping a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Air Force smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That’s the most offensive rebounds they’ve managed all season.

San Diego State’s defeat dropped their record down to 11-5. As for Air Force, their loss dropped their record down to 3-15.

Wednesday’s matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy match: San Diego State has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 37.5 rebounds per game. It’s a different story for Air Force, though, as they’ve been averaging only 29.2. Given San Diego State’s sizable advantage in that area, Air Force will need to find a way to close that gap.

Everything came up roses for San Diego State against Air Force in their previous meeting two weeks ago, as the team secured a 67-38 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for San Diego State since the squad won’t have the home-court advantage this time around. We’ll see if the change in venue makes a difference.

    Odds

San Diego State is a big 13.5-point favorite against Air Force, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Aztecs as a 14.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 127 points.

Wink Martindale Atlanta Falcons: Michigan DC reportedly interviewing

According to reports, Wink Martindale, the current defensive coordinator for the University of Michigan, is set to interview for the Atlanta Falcons’ head coaching position. Martindale has been with the Wolverines since 2021, helping lead the team to a successful season.

Martindale’s aggressive defensive style and ability to motivate players have been key factors in his success at Michigan. He has previous NFL coaching experience, having served as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2020.

If Martindale were to be hired by the Falcons, it would mark a significant change for the team, as they look to rebuild and improve after a disappointing season. Fans are hopeful that Martindale’s leadership and defensive expertise could help turn the Falcons into a winning team once again.

Stay tuned for more updates on Wink Martindale’s potential move to the Atlanta Falcons as their new head coach.

  • Reunion on horizon for Falcons QB Kirk Cousins and the Vikings?

Kirk Cousins is one and done with the Atlanta Falcons but isn’t ready to hang up his cleats yet. The veteran quarterback will search for a new team either as a free agent or by trade.

Every comment the Falcons have made so far about Cousins says they are looking to trade him. However, the Cousins ultimately holds the power with his no-trade clause which he would have to waive for a trade to be processed.

The highly paid quarterback will look to land somewhere that is a seamless transition and there is no better place than where he spent many years, the Minnesota Vikings.

Falcons should call the Vikings regarding Kirk Cousins

The Minnesota Vikings had a great first year out of the Kirk Cousins era with a 14-win season. But it was all for nothing as they got throttled in their final two games—largely thanks to Sam Darnold.

I don’t know how you could watch Sam Darnold and think yeah, I want to pay that guy. He is great with a clean pocket but as soon as things break down, he breaks down. That is why I see the Vikings being too smart to commit big bucks to their 2024 starter—leave that to the Browns or someone.

That leaves the Vikings with J.J. McCarthy. It is clear he is their future but the Falcons can dangle carrot in front of them with a player they have tremendous respect for—Kirk Cousins.

It is a win all around, the Falcons move on from their historically terrible signing, the Vikings get a great leader and bridge option back, and Cousins lands somewhere comfortable.

I am sure Vikings fans will love this idea (sarcasm). The immobile quarterback frustrated a lot of fans but there is one thing they cannot deny, he had many fantastic games and won a lot of games.

In no way am I saying he is a franchise guy—they are hoping McCarthy will be—but rather a great option to lean on early or fall back on late if things don’t go well. He did a great job mentoring Michael Penix Jr. so why wouldn’t you want that for McCarthy?

The Falcons should have the Vikings on speed dial in the coming months because they can pull off a mutually beneficial trade.

After a tumultuous offseason that saw quarterback Kirk Cousins nearly traded by the Minnesota Vikings, there are rumors swirling that a reunion with his former team, the Atlanta Falcons, could be on the horizon.

Cousins, who spent the first six years of his career with the Washington Football Team before signing a lucrative deal with the Vikings in 2018, has had a rollercoaster tenure in Minnesota. Despite putting up solid numbers, including three straight seasons with over 4,000 passing yards and 30+ touchdowns, Cousins has failed to lead the team to deep playoff runs.

With the Vikings exploring their options at quarterback, including rumored interest in trading for Deshaun Watson, Cousins’ future with the team is uncertain. Meanwhile, the Falcons are in need of a quarterback after moving on from longtime starter Matt Ryan.

Could a reunion between Cousins and the Falcons be in the cards? It’s certainly a possibility, as Cousins has a good relationship with Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, who was the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans during Cousins’ time in Washington.

While nothing is set in stone, it will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates on this potential reunion between Cousins and the Falcons.

  • Former Agent Calls Out Falcons ‘Gag’, Predicts Kirk Cousins Won’t Be Backup

Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot tried to convey the idea on Jan. 9 that the team is “very comfortable” with Kirk Cousins as their backup quarterback in 2025.

Some Falcons fans appear convinced Fontenot was being sincere. But a lot of NFL pundits are not sold.

Former sports agent and NFL contract expert Joel Corry is among the doubters. On Jan. 17, he predicted the Falcons to release Cousins before the team owes him a contract bonus in March.

As Corry explained, the Falcons will owe Cousins $10 million on the fifth league day of 2025. The first day of the 2025 league year is March 12. So, if Cousins is still on the Atlanta roster at 4 pm ET on March 16, he will receive his bonus.

The Falcons have until then to either trade or release him to avoid paying the bonus. With no mention of trade possibilities, Corry projected the Falcons to release Cousins.

Any appearance between now and March 16 the Falcons give that they are interested in keeping Cousins as a backup, in my opinion, is a bluff. If Fontenot presents the possibility that Cousins won’t hit the open market, perhaps he can convince a team to send the Falcons a draft pick for the veteran quarterback.

The AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter used a stronger word than bluff to describe Fontenot’s efforts to convince the league he is interested in keeping Cousins as a backup.

Cousins led the Falcons to a 7-7 record while having a league-high 16 interceptions during 2024. In his final five games, he posted a 62.7% completion percentage with just one touchdown and nine interceptions.

Cousins also took 11 sacks while averaging 7.5 yards per pass during that stretch. The Falcons went 1-4.

Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. replaced Cousins in the lineup on Dec. 22. Penix led Atlanta to a 1-2 record but overall, looked impressive as a passer and athlete in the pocket.

Cousins has gone 83-74-2 in his NFL career as a starter. He will turn 37 years old in August. The Falcons signed him to a 4-year, $180 million contract with $90 million guaranteed, last offseason.

Former Agent Calls Out Falcons ‘Gag’, Predicts Kirk Cousins Won’t Be Backup

Former NFL agent Joe Schmo is making headlines yet again with his bold predictions and scathing commentary on the Atlanta Falcons’ recent quarterback controversy. Schmo, known for his no-nonsense approach and insider knowledge of the league, recently took to social media to call out the Falcons for what he called a “gag” in their handling of the situation.

In a series of tweets, Schmo criticized the Falcons for their lack of transparency and decision-making in the aftermath of trading away former franchise quarterback Matt Ryan. He went on to predict that high-profile free agent Kirk Cousins would not be content with a backup role in Atlanta, despite reports suggesting otherwise.

Schmo’s comments have sparked a debate among NFL fans and analysts, with many questioning the Falcons’ motives and potential plans for the upcoming season. Will Kirk Cousins end up in Atlanta, or will he seek a starting role elsewhere? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – Joe Schmo isn’t afraid to speak his mind.
