Eli Manning, Antonio Gates among Hall of Fame finalists

Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, former Defensive Players of the Year Luke Kuechly and Terrell Suggs, and prolific tight end Antonio Gates are among the finalists for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

The Hall on Saturday announced the names of the 15 modern-era finalists who advanced from a group of 25 to the final stage of voting. The group includes five players in their first year of eligibility, nine who were finalists last year and receiver Steve Smith Sr., who made it this far for the first time in his fourth year of eligibility.

The selection committee will vote next month to pick the class of between three and five modern-era players that will be announced the week of the Super Bowl.

Five others also are under consideration for enshrinement, with Maxie Baughan, Sterling Sharpe and Jim Tyrer finalists in the seniors category, Mike Holmgren in the coaches category and Ralph Hay as a contributor. Between one and three of those nominees will also get inducted into the Hall.

Manning, Kuechly and Suggs are finalists in their first year of eligibility, along with postseason kicking star Adam Vinatieri and former Baltimore guard Marshal Yanda.

Gates was a first-time finalist for the 2024 class and is back at this stage along with defensive end Jared Allen; receivers Torry Holt and Reggie Wayne; offensive linemen Willie Anderson and Jahri Evans; defensive backs Darren Woodson, Eric Allen and Rodney Harrison; and running back Fred Taylor also advancing.

Manning will look to follow his brother Peyton into the Hall following a standout career with the New York Giants. Manning was picked first overall in the 2004 draft and spent his entire career in New York. He led the Giants to an upset win over the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl following the 2007 season, throwing a game-winning TD pass to Plaxico Burress in the final minute.

He led another late TD drive to upset Tom Brady and the Patriots four years later. Manning is one of 13 QBs to win multiple Super Bowls, with eight of the nine who are eligible for the Hall getting inducted.

Only Jim Plunkett has not been inducted, along with more recent players such as Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Patrick Mahomes, who aren’t yet eligible.

Manning was a four-time Pro Bowler but never made All-Pro or led the league in a major statistical category in a season. He finished his career with 57,023 yards passing and 366 TDs.

His best moments came during those two postseason runs. Manning joined Brady (five), Mahomes (three), Joe Montana (three), Bart Starr (two) and Terry Bradshaw (two) as the only multiple winners of Super Bowl MVP awards.

Kuechly and Suggs were among the top defensive players of their era, with Kuechly selected as the top defensive player in 2013 and Suggs in 2011.

Kuechly’s career was brief but impactful. The first-round pick by Carolina in 2012 was an All-Pro five times, with seven Pro Bowl nods and a Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Over his eight-year career, Kuechly led all linebackers in the NFL in tackles (1,090), takeaways (26), interceptions (18) and passes defensed (66).

Suggs was one of the top pass rushers in the league over his 17-year career, with his 139 sacks ranking eighth best since they became an official stat in 1982.

Suggs had seven double-digit sack seasons in his 16 seasons with Baltimore, including 14 in 2011 when he was selected as the top defensive player in the league and led the NFL with seven forced fumbles.

Gates played only basketball in college before turning into one of the NFL’s top tight ends after being drafted by the Chargers. He became an All-Pro in just his second season in 2004. He was an All-Pro again the next two seasons and went on to have a 16-year career with the team.

Gates finished with 955 catches for 11,841 yards and an NFL record for tight ends with 116 touchdown receptions.

Vinatieri was one of the most clutch kickers in NFL history, making the game-winning field goals in the first two Super Bowl titles during New England’s dynasty.

He helped launch the run with one of the game’s greatest kicks – a 45-yarder in the snow to force overtime in the “Tuck Rule” game against the Raiders in the 2001 divisional round. He made the game-winning kick in OT to win that game and then hit a 48-yarder on the final play of a 20-17 win in the Super Bowl against the Rams.

Vinatieri is the NFL’s career leader in points (2,673) and made field goals (599) over a 24-year career with New England and Indianapolis. He also leads all players with 56 field goals and 238 points in the postseason.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its list of finalists for the Class of 2023, and two notable names included are Eli Manning and Antonio Gates.

Eli Manning, the two-time Super Bowl MVP and longtime quarterback for the New York Giants, is among the finalists in his first year of eligibility. Manning had an illustrious career, throwing for over 57,000 yards and 366 touchdowns during his 16 seasons in the NFL. He led the Giants to two Super Bowl victories, including a memorable upset over the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Antonio Gates, the former tight end for the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers), is also a finalist in his first year of eligibility. Gates was a dominant force on the field, hauling in over 11,000 receiving yards and 116 touchdowns during his 16-year career. He revolutionized the position of tight end with his athleticism and pass-catching ability, paving the way for future generations of players.

Both Manning and Gates have left a lasting impact on the game of football and are deserving of a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It will be interesting to see if they receive enough votes to be enshrined in Canton later this year. Who do you think deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame? Former Giants QB Eli Manning named Hall of Fame finalist

Eli Manning is one step away from becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

The former Giants quarterback was named one of 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.

Manning now needs at least 80% of the Selection Committee’s vote in order to be eligible for induction. Up to five modern-era players can be elected for the Class of 2025, which will be announced at the “NFL Honors” ceremony on Feb. 6.

Manning is the lone quarterback on this year’s list of finalists. He is one of six first-time finalists, joining wide receiver Steve Smith Sr.; linebackers Luke Kuechly and Terrell Suggs; offensive lineman Marshal Yanda; and kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Among them, only Smith is not in his first year of eligibility.

Rounding out the list of finalists announced Saturday are receivers Reggie Wayne and Torry Holt; tight end Antonio Gates; offensive linemen Jahri Evans and Willie Anderson; defensive backs Eric Allen and Darren Woodson; defensive end Jared Allen; and running back Fred Taylor.

That group was whittled down from an original pool of 167 nominees. The Hall announced its 25 semifinalists in November, with safety Earl Thomas, defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and defensive end Robert Mathis among the notable members from that stage to not make it to the final 15.

Manning led the Giants to Super Bowl victories over Tom Brady’s New England Patriots after the 2007 and 2011 seasons and was named MVP of both games.

He led game-winning drives in both of those Super Bowls, including famously escaping a sack and completing the “helmet catch” to David Tyree to give the previously undefeated 2007 Patriots their first loss.

Manning, who retired after the 2019 season, ranks 11th in NFL history in passing yards (57,023), passing touchdowns (366) and completions (4,895).

But Manning’s candidacy as a first-ballot Hall of Famer has been the subject of fierce debate, largely because he went 117-117 in the regular season over his 16 years in the NFL, all with the Giants. He went 8-4 in the postseason.

Manning, 43, would join older brother Peyton Manning in the Hall of Fame. He would become the 33rd Giant to be inducted, a list that includes former teammate Michael Strahan, as well as Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson, Frank Gifford and Bill Parcells.

Overall, the Hall will induct between four and eight candidates in 2025, with as many as three coming from seniors category. The five finalists in the seniors category are Maxie Baughan, Sterling Sharpe and Jim Tyrer, coach Mike Holmgren and contributor Ralph Hay.

Former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, who won both Super Bowls with Manning, was a semifinalist in the seniors category but was left off of the list of finalists in what many considered a snub.

Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has been named a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Manning, who retired from the NFL in 2020 after a storied 16-year career with the Giants, is one of 15 modern-era finalists for the prestigious honor.

During his time with the Giants, Manning led the team to two Super Bowl victories, earning Super Bowl MVP honors in both games. He holds numerous franchise records, including most career passing yards and touchdown passes. Manning was known for his clutch performances in pressure situations, earning him the nickname “The Sheriff” among fans.

If Manning is elected to the Hall of Fame, he will join his brother Peyton Manning, who was inducted in 2021. The final vote for the Class of 2023 will take place on February 10th, with the inductees being announced during the NFL Honors ceremony on February 11th.

Congratulations to Eli Manning on this well-deserved recognition of his outstanding career! #EliManning #HallOfFame #Giants #NFL

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced its list of finalists for the Class of 2023, and two familiar names are among the nominees: Eli Manning and Antonio Gates.

Eli Manning, the two-time Super Bowl champion and former quarterback for the New York Giants, is considered one of the greatest players in franchise history. Manning, who retired in 2019 after a 16-year career, ranks seventh all-time in passing yards and touchdowns. He was known for his clutch performances in the playoffs, leading the Giants to two stunning Super Bowl victories over the New England Patriots.

Antonio Gates, the former tight end for the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers), is widely regarded as one of the best at his position in NFL history. Gates, who retired in 2019 after a 16-year career, ranks third all-time among tight ends in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He was a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses, using his size and athleticism to dominate the middle of the field.

Both Manning and Gates have been eligible for the Hall of Fame for the past few years, and their inclusion among this year’s finalists is a testament to their exceptional careers. The final voting will take place in February, and if selected, they will join the ranks of the all-time greats in Canton, Ohio. Stay tuned to see if Manning and Gates will receive the prestigious honor of being enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Pittsburgh Steelers legends miss out on 2025 Hall of Fame class

2025 will not be the year either James Harrison or Hines Ward makes the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Pittsburgh Steelers legends failed to make the list of 15 finalists on Saturday, forcing them to wait at least another year until they get their call to Canton, Ohio.

Both players were semifinalists, but the strength at their positions in this class left them on the outside looking in this time around.

Harrison was part of the legendary 2000s defenses that helped the Steelers win two straight Super Bowls. Known as “Deebo,” Harrison dominated the AFC North for years after the Steelers signed him as an undrafted free agent. In his third year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame, Harrison was a four-time All-Pro selection and retired as the franchise’s leader in sacks. Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt have since usurped that. Harrison won the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Ward won two Super Bowls with the Steelers during his storied 14-year career with the team. The Korean-born Ward excelled as a blocker and receiver, earning the Super Bowl XL MVP and three All-Pro nods.

The 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class has been announced, and unfortunately, several Pittsburgh Steelers legends have missed out on induction this year. Despite their incredible contributions to the game, these iconic players will have to wait another year for their chance at immortality in Canton.

Among those who did not make the cut are:

    – Hines Ward, the beloved wide receiver who was known for his toughness, work ethic, and clutch performances in big games.
    – Troy Polamalu, the dynamic safety who revolutionized the position with his unique style of play and instinctive abilities.
    – Alan Faneca, the dominant offensive lineman who paved the way for many of the Steelers’ most memorable moments on offense.
    – James Harrison, the fearsome linebacker who was a force to be reckoned with on the field and a leader in the locker room.

While it’s disappointing to see these Steelers legends miss out on the Hall of Fame this year, there is no doubt that their legacies will endure and they will eventually take their rightful place among the all-time greats in the hallowed halls of Canton. Until then, we will continue to celebrate and honor their contributions to the game of football and the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise.

  • L.A. hotel that gained fame with Doors album cover burns in fire

L.A. hotel that gained fame with Doors album cover burns in fire

A former hotel in downtown L.A. whose name graced a 1970 Doors album — and where the band surreptitiously shot the record’s cover art — was badly burned in a fire Thursday morning, according to authorities.

The 110-year-old structure, the former Morrison Hotel, may most recently have been home to squatters.

More than 100 firefighters battled the fire, categorized as a major emergency incident, for nearly two hours with no injuries reported before the blaze was knocked down around 12:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The four-story building, at 1246 S. Hope St., had no official occupants at the time of the blaze.

Several dozen individuals who appeared to be unhoused fled the building, however, when the fire broke out, and fire crews helped three additional individuals escape from the third floor using ladders, an LAFD spokesperson said.

It’s unclear whether squatters caused the blaze, which is under investigation by the Fire Department arson team.

“The smoke cloud was so close. We didn’t know where it was coming from,” said Faith Ronning, who lives in an apartment building across from the fire. “People in the neighboring buildings hustled outside with their pets and kids. I’ve never seen a fire that big up close like that.”

The building was built in 1914 and was made famous after it was featured on the Doors “Morrison Hotel” album in 1970.

Henry Diltz poses with a photo of his “Morrison Hotel” album cover photo in 2020 at the hotel at 1246 S. Hope St.

(Scott Dudelson / Getty Images )

Music photographer Henry Diltz took the cover shot in 1969. In a 2020 Facebook post marking the 50th anniversary of the album, he said the group had asked for permission to take a photo at the hotel but were denied. When the hotel clerk was away from the front desk, however, they slipped in and quickly got the well-known shot using just one roll of film. Featured front and center was the band’s legendary singer, Jim Morrison.

The building has a checkered history and record of unsafe living conditions. In the post, Diltz described the building as a “funky old sort of flop house” where a room could be had for $2.50 a night at the time of the 1969 shoot.

In 2004, around 40 tenants of the 111-unit building filed a lawsuit against the owners, accusing them of being slumlords.

Residents claimed they were exposed to leaky windows, mold and mildew on carpets and walls, exposed electrical wiring and other conditions that had made the hotel uninhabitable and a health risk. Blood tests found that children living in the building had elevated levels of lead from chipping and peeling paint.

The building was used for low-income housing until it was vacated in 2008, according to Urbanize L.A. In 2016, plans were initiated to transform the building into 444-room hotel with 136 luxury residential units.

But then, in 2022, the developer defaulted on a $13-million loan, and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation purchased the building with the intention of converting it into low-income housing, according to a news release from the foundation.

Representatives from the foundation told KCAL News on Thursday that unhoused individuals had been living in the building for the last several months.

“As soon as we secure the building, the homeless come up with power tools within hours and just cut the locks off,” Mark Dyer, vice president of operations for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, told the station.

Times staff writer Julius Miller contributed to this report.

The iconic L.A. hotel that gained fame with the Doors album cover burns in fire

The Sunset Strip’s famous Alta Cienega Motel, known for its role in the iconic album cover of The Doors’ debut album, has been tragically destroyed in a devastating fire. The once vibrant and historic hotel, which has been a popular spot for rock ‘n’ roll legends and Hollywood celebrities alike, now lies in ruins.

The hotel gained international fame in 1967 when The Doors posed for their debut album cover in front of the Alta Cienega Motel’s iconic neon sign. The image of Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, and Robby Krieger standing in front of the sign has become a symbol of the band’s rebellious spirit and the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, quickly engulfed the historic building, leaving nothing but charred remains. Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, but the damage was too extensive to save the beloved hotel.

Fans of The Doors and music enthusiasts around the world are mourning the loss of this iconic landmark. The Alta Cienega Motel may be gone, but its legacy will live on through the music and memories it inspired. Rest in peace, Alta Cienega Motel.
