Utah Hockey Club replaces Wasatch for Outlaws in fan name vote
One day after announcing three finalists for their permanent nickname, the Utah Hockey Club has replaced one of them.
Wasatch, named for the Wasatch mountain range in Utah, has been swapped out with Outlaws, the team announced on Thursday. It will join Hockey Club and Mammoth, which made the final four after an initial fan vote last year, as the three options fans will be able to vote on during the team’s current four-game homestand.

“We listened to your feedback and dug into all the Qualtrics data from last night’s survey,” the team said in a statement Thursday. “For the team name, it’s clear that Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we’re swapping it out.”
Yeti had been a favorite option and was part of the voting process since the beginning, but a trademark issue caused the team to drop it from consideration.
Mike Maughan, an executive of the team’s parent company Smith Entertainment Group, confirmed to reporters this week that the team would pivot to a different selection of possible names after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected the Yeti name and logo it submitted for approval.
The USPTO specifically cited a “likelihood of confusion” for consumers due to other companies and brands with a similar name, most notably the Yeti Cooler Company. Different companies can feature a similar name if they’re in clearly different fields (e.g. the Beatles’ Apple Corps and Apple Computers), but it seems likely an NHL team with the same name would clash with certain products, such as the cooler company’s apparel line.
Maughan said the team is confident that the winner of the fan vote will clear the patent and trademark process.
The team is planning to have a permanent name and home and away jerseys in place in time for the start of the 2025-26 NHL season.

18-year-old Tyler Sabapathy died after he fell from a pole in Center City while celebrating the Eagles win. His devastated friends shared their grief, expressing what a good man he was.
PHILADELPHIA – A night of joyous celebrations took a terrifying turn that claimed the life of a young Eagles fan, according to sources.
What we know:
Philadelphia police confirmed to FOX 29’s Kelly Rule that an 18-year-old man landed on his head after falling from a pole near 15th and Market streets on Sunday night.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he was put in very critical condition, according to authorities, who say he fell on his own.
On Tuesday night, sources told FOX 29 that the 18-year-old, a student at Temple University, had died.

“It is with deep sadness that we write to share news of the death of first-year student Tyler Sabapathy. Over the weekend, Tyler sustained critical injuries and ultimately passed away this afternoon.
The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic. There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Tyler was already a thriving student within Temple University’s College of Public Health, where he was majoring in exercise and sport science. As an accomplished gymnast with more than 120 medals in provincial, regional and international competitions, Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did. He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world.
As a member of the university’s club gymnastics team, Tyler displayed exceptional self-discipline and work ethic, spending countless hours a week training and honing his craft. He was loved by his teammates, friends and coaches here in Philadelphia.

Temple University freshman students and teammates of 18-year-old Tyler Sabapathy are devastated, remembering him as a beloved student and talented athlete.
Junior Robert Stewart says he’s cherishing the moments he had with him, as he supervises the Men’s Gymnastics Team practices.
“To hear that of all sports, but of all people of that to happen to, is Tyler, is actually pretty upsetting. It’s shocking. It’s hard to honestly comprehend,” says Stewart. “He was a beautiful student, he was amazing, he was nice, he was sweet, he was kind.’
Students tell FOX 29 they are feeling differently about the celebrations now, but want some of the negative feedback on social media to stop.
“It’s the culture of the city so please don’t make a mockery of it. It was an accident,” says Stewart.
Ray Epstein, Temple’s student body president, says the tragedy should be used as a message of caution.
“We can celebrate easily and happily without necessarily continuing this tradition,” she says. “As much as it’s been something that’s been positive for people, this is a sign that it needs to come to an end, and it’s nobody’s fault because people were participating in a long-held culture, but we need to disrupt it.”
A spokesperson for Temple University said they sent out the following message to students before the NFC Championship game, and will be sending out similar messaging before the Super Bowl.

So, the Phillies acquired Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins, buying low on the left-hander coming off an injury-riddled campaign last year even though he showed he’s one of the top arms in the sport when he was healthy in 2023.

While he’s become a fan favorite for what he’s done as a starting pitching in the playoffs, he began his career in the bullpen and is still working on building up his arm for the workload that’s necessary to pitch at a high level every fifth day 30 times per year.
Suarez was a full-time starter in 2022, making 29 starts and throwing his career-high in innings with 155.1.
The following season, he began the year on the injured list with an elbow strain, not making his first appearance until May before he found himself on the IL again with a hamstring strain.
That resulted in just 22 starts and 125 innings pitched.
This past campaign, Suarez was in the NL Cy Young mix early on, carrying a sizzling 2.27 ERA through the month of June that earned him his first All-Star nod. But in the eight starts after the Midsummer Classic, his ERA was 5.65, which also saw him miss time on the injured list with a lower back issue.
All of that is to say, using the lefty out of the bullpen for the second half of the year might actually allow him to be more effective for this Phillies team.
And with more gas left in the tank, he could still provide those incredible playoff moments, just this time around, he can go deeper into games and not turn things over to the bullpen unit early in the contest.
