With Super Bowl Sunday nearing, so will be Kick of Destiny 3, the head-to-head kicking competition between brothers/ex-NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. During his run, Yamal was able to sidestep multiple Alaves defenders in his wake, with some of them even getting beaten twice.
This little manoeuvre served as a reminder for Barcelona fans as to why Yamal is regarded as such a special talent.
At the end of the move, after dribbling past at least five or six players, Yamal had the vision to go across the middle of the final third and provide a lofted ball out wide to Raphinha, who was free.
Although Yamal’s sensational run and a key pass forward did not lead to a goal for Barcelona, it was indicator of the youngster’s potential and how he is similar to Yamal in terms of his ability to dribble past players at ease.
As a football fan, I always love watching talented players display their skills on the field. Recently, I came across a video of Lamine Yamal, a young player for Barcelona’s youth team, pulling off an incredible dribbling move against Alaves.
Watching Yamal effortlessly glide past half of Alaves’ defence reminded me of watching Lionel Messi in his prime. The way he used his quick feet and close control to leave defenders in his wake was a joy to behold. It’s moments like these that make football such a beautiful game.
It’s exciting to see young talents like Yamal coming through the ranks at Barcelona, and I can’t wait to see more of what he has to offer in the future. If he continues to develop his skills and maintain his composure on the ball, he could very well follow in the footsteps of the legendary Messi.
For now, I’ll continue to enjoy watching players like Yamal showcase their talents and remind me of the magic that players like Messi bring to the game. It’s moments like these that make being a football fan so special.
Annihilation released in 2018 with only a brief run in theaters. Despite earning positive reviews, the film did poorly at the box office and has continued to be overlooked by audiences ever since. Starring Natalie Portman, the sci-fi movie blended elements of action films, thrillers, and horror, along with hauntingly beautiful and bizarre visuals to produce a unique experience that deserves more attention than it received. Fans who were fortunate enough to check it out were likely struck by its brilliant writing and performances, as well as its message about illness and grief.
Sickness, death, and coping with loss are all explored in Annihilation through an approach that is simultaneously sad, terrifying, and comforting. While many viewers and critics picked up on these elements, however, few noticed just how deep these themes were embedded in the story. A close examination of the characters reveals that they all, in fact, represent different stages of grief according to the well-known Kübler-Ross model. Under this model, people facing death move through five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. In Annihilation, each member of the team that enters the Shimmer comes to embody a different one of these stages.
The Shimmer Spreads Like Cancer, Eliciting the Five Stages of Grief
While there isn’t a true villain or antagonist in Annihilation, the Shimmer is practically a character itself, overshadowing everything else in the film and, at times, appearing to have a will of its own. Growing out of a meteorite that struck the Earth three years earlier, it confounds researchers as it continues to expand and envelop more territory. In its sudden appearance and uncontrollable growth, this Shimmer seems to represent disease, and cancer in particular.
The 2010s had some of the most unique horror movies ever put on screen. But one entry completely redefined science fiction horror movies.
Consuming everything in its path as it mindlessly grows and mutates, the Shimmer immediately sparks fear among those studying it. Little understood, it seems to absorb everything it touches and, from the beginning of the movie, appears to pose a threat to all life on earth. Like Cancer, it appears to feed on life itself, changing it in ways that result in death for its victims. Each character that enters the Shimmer, seeking a way to stop it, is soon forced to confront their own mortality and comes to represent a different stage in the classic (though controversial) model for explaining grief.
Cassie Dies First Only to Return Later

Fittingly, the first character to perish also represents the first stage of grief, denial. A geomorphologist studying the landscape of the environment within the Shimmer, Cassie is attacked and killed early by a terrifying, mutated bear, being dragged off into the forest. Her demise is horrifying in itself, but it’s what comes after that truly shocks her companions and viewers, and speaks to her place in the stages of grief.
Warfare is one of Alex Garland’s upcoming movies with Ray Mendoza, but another sci-fi horror film he worked on inspires confidence for the new movie.
While Cassie dies before she has a chance to really contemplate the danger she’s in or express any elements of grief, the later return of the mutant-bear, and her voice coming from its mouth, is almost a symbolic form of denial. Her voice echoing from the creature that killed her seems to indicate that the Shimmer “refracted” some part of her into it, and she has not completely died. Her voice, seeming to scream in fear and pain, seems to deny her fate, desperately rejecting the fact that she has died at all. While her body has certainly perished, some piece of her refuses to accept that and clings to existence within the bear, making her a disembodied embodiment of denial.
Anya Lashes out at her comrades

The easiest connection to make in Annihilation’s analogy of grief is Anya’s reflection of anger. Faced with the shocking truth of the Shimmer and the possibility that she will die, or else change to the point where she is no longer herself, Anya transforms her fear into rage and lashes out at those around her. Showing how those suffering or in pain can sometimes become their own worst enemies and harm the very people who are trying to help them, Anya nearly kills the rest of her team before dying herself.
Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man tries to nail a nuanced twist, but this curveball was done better by a 2024 Kit Harington werewolf horror film.
Anya is another example of a character dying in the same order as the stage of grief they represent. As anger, according to the model, comes after denial, Anya is killed after Cassie, by a creature that has partially absorbed Cassie. After this, however, the stages of grief appear to be shaken up by Annihilation, with characters reflecting the different stages perishing out of order or surviving until the end of the story.
Lena Is Constantly Making Deals

Intriguingly, the film’s protagonist does not represent the final stage of grief. Instead, Lena seems to embody bargaining throughout Annihilation. The cellular biologist and Army veteran finds herself negotiating with others throughout the film. When first seized by the government and questioned about her husband’s return from the Shimmer, she tries to bargain for information and ultimately makes a deal that involves her going into the Shimmer herself. While in the Shimmer, she urges other characters to continue on with their journey multiple times, seeming to conclude deals with them.
Despite Natalie Portman’s star power, Jane Got a Gun was a flop with fans and critics alike.
Further, in a more accurate depiction of the sort of bargaining that occurs in the stages of grief theory, Lena appears to bargain with herself during her adventure. Committed to completing her mission and reaching the lighthouse, she seems convinced that doing so will somehow save Kane. She appears to bemotivated by this hope and has subconsciously reached a deal with fate that, if she does her job, she won’t have to face the loss of her husband.
Ventress Succumbs to Despair

Ventress, the leader of the team and the character who is literally suffering with Cancer in Annihilation, plainly represents depression by the end of her story. During their journey, Ventress abandons her group and moves on alone, isolating herself from others. Speaking to the loneliness of depression and the tendency to self-destructively withdraw from friends and family, she succumbs to sadness, both about the Shimmer and her illness, and finds herself alone.
Though not appreciated upon release by critics and audiences, Lost Highway is David Lynch’s true cult classic horror.
When Lena eventually finds Ventress, the former leader has plainly lost all hope. Seeming to exude emotional agony, Ventress talks about the Shimmer in apocalyptic terms, claiming that it will continue to expand and eventually destroy the world. When she finally meets her end, it is literally in a black pit that reflects her inner turmoil. She dies, not having accepted her fate, but seeming to have simply lost the will to carry on.
Only Josie Finds Peace

Of the entire team, only Josie the physicist seems to find any beauty in the Shimmer, and only she seems to come to an end that could be described as peaceful. It’s Josie who first comes to understand the Shimmer, deducing that it refracts the DNA of creatures inside, changing them into new beings, and accepting that it will happen to her as well. In her final conversation with Lena, she reflects on the pain and fear that Cassie was in when she died and explains that she doesn’t want to go out the same way.
One overlooked sci-fi horror anime is an exploration of a corrupt society and human nature that fans of Psycho-Pass and Wonder Egg Priority will love.
Regarding the shimmer, she tells Lena that “Ventress wants to face it, you want to fight it, but I don’t think I want either of those things.” With this dying declaration, Josie explicitly moves beyond both bargaining and depression, indicating that she wants to simply accept the Shimmer and what it will do to her. As she wanders off, Josie seems to transform into a flowering bush, becoming something beautiful even as she passes. Her refusal to fight her fate, her peaceful demeanor, and her noble end all speak to her acceptance of the Shimmer and her own death.
In many ways, Annihilation is a horror movie about fear itself. It explores death and how people respond to it. Through characters that personify the stages of grief, the movie examines both the positive and destructive ways people confront their own morality and the terror that arises from it. These elements, along with its amazing visuals and performances, make Annihilation a great sci-fi horror movie, worthy of more attention than it received.
In 2013, the sci-fi film “Elysium” hit theaters to mixed reviews and modest box office success. Despite its lukewarm reception, this underrated gem holds a deep hidden message that many fans may have missed.

Rick Pitino knows how John Calipari might feel when the former Kentucky coach returns to Lexington on Saturday as Arkansas visits the 12th-ranked Wildcats.
Pitino’s first visit there — and many after — was hostile in part because he returned as the coach of Louisville, Kentucky’s greatest rival.
But Pitino, who was accused of using an offensive gesture toward the crowd after a game at Rupp Arena in 2015, said he hopes Kentucky’s fans will show grace to Calipari, whose tenure ended last season after three consecutive first-weekend exits in the NCAA tournament before he accepted the Arkansas job.
“So he’s coming back on Saturday, and I want all of you to show the great class that you have: 23,000-plus people giving him a huge standing ovation,” Pitino, now the coach at St. John’s, said in a video posted Thursday to social media. “Show him what respect and admiration is all about. I know you have the class. I’ve always believed in you. Do it once again.”
Calipari was the king of the one-and-done era at Kentucky. From 2011 to 2015, he led the program to four Final Four appearances in five seasons, a run that included the 2012 national championship.
But Calipari’s time at Kentucky ended with a turbulent stretch and losses to double-digit seeds Saint Peter’s and Oakland in 2022 and 2024, respectively, in the NCAA tournament.
Earlier this week, Calipari said the return could come with different emotions.
“Walking in that arena, storied arena, and walking in the wrong door, the other door,” Calipari said during his weekly radio show before Saturday’s game. “Seeing my friends the night before. Having my friends — dear friends, lifelong friends — but they’re Kentucky fans. Their whole life they’ve been Kentucky fans.
“I just hope they’re neutral, but they are Kentucky fans. We gave our heart and soul. [My wife] was like a mother to those kids. So yes, there is going to be some emotion.”
If anyone knows how Calipari feels, it’s Pitino, who went from beloved coach to enemy in the eyes of Kentucky’s fans after leading the Wildcats to the 1996 national title only to leave a year later for the Boston Celtics.
Pitino said he hopes Kentucky fans will remember the good things Calipari did during his time there.
“Toughest day of my coaching career at Louisville was when I had to walk into Rupp Arena,” he said in the video. “I tried not to show it, but the reception — it tore me up apart, because I loved that place so much.
“As you all know, I’m not best friends with John Calipari. I respect him certainly, but it was a mutual thing. The fans wanted a change. John read the tea leaves. He needed a change. And he really didn’t want to leave. But what did he do for you? He brought the best talent in the history of the game of any university in America to Lexington. He also won a national championship. His style of play was extremely entertaining.”
In a surprising turn of events, former University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is urging Kentucky fans to show support for current Wildcats head coach John Calipari. In a recent interview, Pitino expressed his admiration for Calipari’s success at Kentucky and urged fans to give him “a huge standing ovation” when he returns to Rupp Arena.

Reaching higher proficiency via completing challenges provides players with free rewards.
Players can reach Lord with enough playtime, but some think a tier beyond that should require beating more difficult challenges.
In a recent online discussion, Marvel Rivals fans expressed that they would like NetEase Games to add more hero proficiency ranks to the game beyond Lord. Marvel Rivals is currently nearing the middle of Season 1: Eternal Night Falls, which features a struggle between Dracula and the Fantastic Four. With Doctor Strange and Blade caught in a trap, it’s up to Marvel’s first family to lead the charge against the villain.
While playing the popular hero shooter, gamers can choose to invest their time in a single character to increase their proficiency with that hero. For instance, someone who uses Psylocke as their main hero consistently will likely rise within the ranks of proficiency over time while passively completing challenges. However, if one wishes to focus on leveling up their proficiency with a character, they can examine the challenges and focus on completing them to speed things up. Increasing one’s proficiency comes with free rewards in Marvel Rivals, such as sprays and custom KO animations. When a player reaches the final rank, Lord, they get a custom icon for that hero.

In a recent post on Reddit, Minute_Telephone7008 suggested that NetEase Games should add a rank, or multiple ranks, beyond Lord in Marvel Rivals. In addition to adding ranks, gamers suggested that the developers should add more rewards, such as skins, nameplates, or even titles. At the moment, proficiency doesn’t really indicate how skilled someone is when playing a particular hero, because gamers can attain the rank of Lord by simply playing a character for long periods of time. Some fans suggest that, once a person reaches Lord, they should be required to complete increasingly difficult challenges to level up their proficiency further, removing the ability to rank up through playtime alone.
Marvel Rivals Players Want Proficiency Ranks Above Lord
Many fans were particularly fond of the idea of receiving free skins in Marvel Rivals, even if the cosmetics were just simple recolors. Some players noted that NetEase Games has already done something similar with the title’s Heroic Journey achievements, which rewards players with Units and two free skins for Star-Lord and Storm as they complete all of the challenges.
While the community is almost always excited by the idea of receiving new cosmetics, many fans already feel as if NetEase Games has been generous with free skins in Marvel Rivals. So far, players have been able to earn a new skin every season by achieving Gold rank in Competitive play. Fans have also been given the opportunity to claim free skins through special events, Twitch Drops, and even limited promotions. With so many ways to acquire cosmetics at no cost, a lot of players are looking forward to seeing what NetEase Games offers fans next.

TV fans are buzzing as they gear up for the return of an ‘absolutely addictive’ series – the new season of which is just days away.
Invincible, which has become one of the biggest TV hits on Amazon Prime Video in recent years, is returning with its third season.
First launching in 2021, the adult animated superhero series is based on the Image Comics comic book series of the same name.
It follows the tale of a teenager called Mark Grayson (voiced by The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun) as he goes on a path of self-discovery while balancing his newfound responsibility as a superhero.
The first two seasons both received widespread critical acclaim, with viewers eagerly praising its ‘bloody action’ and ‘transfixing story’.
Invincible has also drawn frequent comparisons to the notoriously violent and subversive live-action superhero show The Boys, also on Amazon Prime Video.

With season three of Invincible now less than a week away, fans are excited beyond belief to watch the new episodes – particularly those who have an inkling of what’s going to happen after reading the comics.
‘As someone who has read the comics just earlier this year, this is the season Invincible really, really starts,’ a YouTube user called THEcallumation commented after watching the trailer.
Another user called Davi.A.B.2004 agreed, writing: ‘Season three of Invincible is going to be epic. They have everything [for this] to be the best season of this show.’

Others highlighted one of the most dramatic lines featured in the trailer, which goes: ‘You can be the good guys, or the guys that save the world. You can’t be both.’

In the official Amazon Prime Video synopsis for Invincible season three, it states: ‘Based on Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic book series, Invincible follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson.

Jeopardy!‘s Tournament of Champions is already off to a hot start and has perhaps found its early front-runner in Neilesh Vinjamuri, who dominated the competition in Wednesday’s (January 29) game.
As previously reported, Vinjamuri, a three-game champion from Lionville, Pennsylvania, went up against Weckiai Rannila, a three-game champion from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Greg Jolin, a five-game champion from Raymond, New Hampshire, in Game 3 of the ToC.
Vinjamuri went into beast mode on the buzzer, answering a staggering 33 clues correctly (and only one incorrect) across the episode, securing his spot in the semifinals. In doing so, he earned himself a whole host of new fans, with many taking to social media to praise his impressive performance.
“Absolutely dominating performance. I remember Neilesh being very sharp but I don’t think anyone beats him if his next games are like this one,” wrote one user on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum.
“Neilesh was an absolute buzz-saw in this game, against good opponents. I see him going far,” said another.
“Dang, Neilesh is a beast,” another added.
One fan wrote, “Neilesh was a dang firecracker. Wicked fast, huge knowledge. If he plays like that every game, he’s a strong pick to take this thing down.”

Others wondered if Vinjamuri had broken the record for most correct answers in a single game. Unfortunately for Vinjamuri, he can’t claim that record just yet, as Jeopardy! legends James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings currently hold the record with 44 correct answers in a single game.
Jennings first set the record with 44 correct responses in a game on July 23, 2004, where he also set a new single-day cash winnings record of $75,000. Holzhauer then equaled that score in a game on April 30, 2019, then matched the record again on May 3, 2019. The only other contestant to come close is super-champ Matt Amodio, who answered 43 clues correctly on July 29, 2021.
There is still a lot of tournament left to play, though, so there is always a chance for Vinjamuri or another player to break the record.
