Woman Fatally Struck By Car In Berkeley
BERKELEY, CA — A woman died in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision in Berkeley Sunday afternoon after being trapped under a vehicle, police said.
Police officers and firefighters responded to the scene of the collision at the intersection of Ada and California streets just before 1 p.m., according to police.
Due to the severity of the collision, firefighters had to extricate the pedestrian from under the vehicle, police said.
The firefighters took her to a trauma hospital, but despite efforts to save her, the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries, according to police.
This information is preliminary and could change as the investigation is ongoing, according to police.

Letter Carrier Is Fatally Stabbed at a Bodega in Harlem
An on-duty letter carrier with the United States Postal Service was stabbed to death inside a bodega in Harlem on Thursday afternoon, a Police Department spokesman said.
The stabbing followed an argument over who was first in line, according to a law enforcement official. Officers responded to a 911 call at 2:38 p.m. about a disturbance at the store on Lenox Avenue between West 118th and 119th Streets, the spokesman said. They found the victim, a 36-year-old man, with stab wounds to his stomach. A knife was found at the store, according to an internal police report.
The man was taken to Harlem Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:57 p.m. As of Thursday evening, the police had not released the victim’s name.
No arrests had been made, but the police said they had taken a person into custody. The police did not release the person’s name. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is working with the police on the investigation.
Charisse Artis, a letter carrier who used to work with the victim, went to the bodega on Thursday evening after hearing about the stabbing. She described her former co-worker as “very quiet, very laid back,” adding, “Sometimes you didn’t even know he was there.”
Ms. Artis said her first reaction to the news had been to break down in tears. “I told him ‘Happy New Year’s’ this morning,” she said.

Man accused of fatally setting New York City subway rider on fire says he doesn’t recall incident
The man accused of killing a New York City subway rider by setting her on fire has no memory of “what happened” and admitted to heavy drinking, authorities said Tuesday.
Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen in the United States illegally, appeared before a Brooklyn judge and was formally told that he’s been accused of murder and arson in connection to the gruesome attack on Sunday.
The victim, who still hasn’t been identified, was killed while asleep on a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station.
The suspect allegedly set her on fire with a lighter, and once the victim became engulfed in flames, Zapeta-Calil continued “fanning the flames with a shirt,” a prosecutor said.
Zapeta-Calil later told police that “he drinks a lot of liquor” and “doesn’t know what happened,” the prosecutor added.
Zapeta-Calil used a translator to help him understand the court action on Tuesday and he appeared to be wearing the same white Tyvek suit he had on when New York police officers first walked him out of a police station in front of waiting cameras.
He did not make any comments in court and wasn’t required to enter a plea.
Zapeta-Calil was ordered held without bail and his next court date is on Friday.
Even though the victim has not yet been identified, the Medical Examiner has already determined her death was a homicide and the cause were “thermal injuries and smoke inhalation,” according to court documents.
