  • ‘He’s better than you’: Cristiano Ronaldo’s son names favorite player

Cristiano Ronaldo turns 40 next week but his advancing age hasn’t dimmed his famous competitive instinct.

He has scored 20 goals in 23 appearances for Al Nassr this season and remains a regular starter for the Portuguese national team. But his age is undoubtedly catching up with him and CR7’s son has reportedly told his dad that’s he’s no longer No. 1.

Speaking in an interview this week, Ronaldo revealed which player his son Mateo believes is the best in the world.

“Mateo, he really likes Mbappé,” Ronaldo explained. “He sometimes tells me: Hey dad, Mbappé is better than you,’ and I reply by saying: ‘No, I am better than him, I have scored more goals.”

Kylian Mbappé has been viewed as Cristiano Ronaldo's long-term replacement for Real Madrid.

Mbappé has made no secret of that fact that Ronaldo was his hero growing up, one of the main reasons why he coveted a move to Real Madrid in his career. The Frenchman has not looked entirely comfortable during his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu but a recent purple patch of form has put him on track for a very respectable goals tally.

With a hat-trick last weekend Mbappé is now on 15 LaLiga goals in his first season with the club, 22 goals in all competitions. CR7 hit 33 goals in his first season in Madrid, although injury restricted him to just 35 appearances in all competitions.

If Mbappé stays fit this campaign he could still catch Ronaldo’s goal tally from his debut season in the Spanish capital. Is that likely to make Ronaldo concede that the Frenchman is now his equal? Unlikely.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s son has made a bold statement by naming his favorite player, and it’s not who you might expect. In a recent interview, Ronaldo’s son revealed that he looks up to Lionel Messi as his favorite player.

Despite his father’s status as one of the greatest footballers of all time, it seems that Ronaldo’s son has developed a fondness for his father’s long-time rival. The young football fan praised Messi’s skill and talent on the pitch, calling him “the best player in the world.”

While some may be surprised by this revelation, it’s clear that Ronaldo’s son is not afraid to go against the norm and choose his own favorite player. Perhaps this is a sign of the changing times in football, where loyalty and admiration are not always tied to family ties.

Regardless of his son’s choice, Cristiano Ronaldo remains a legend in the sport and continues to inspire fans around the world. It will be interesting to see how this playful rivalry between father and son plays out in the years to come.

On his match with Ivar: “I was pretty nervous with that, but Ivar is such a great talent it was easy enough. Also, the triple threat, I think, with me, Drew [McIntyre] and [Ilja] Dragunov, I think that was the match for me that I actually belt, ‘I’m back.’”

I know that there’s going to be a great story in the match along with great physicality. I’m just saying like maybe a top three guy, he’s bang for your buck, give me a GUNTHER match.”

On why he likes GUNTHER’s ring work: “Dude, GUNTHER and Sami Zayn is really good stuff. It doesn’t scream Rock-Hogan, but, man, is it a great match. • WWE Star Sheamus Names His Favorite Matches Of 2024

Shortly after WrestleMania 40, Sheamus made his long-awaited return to WWE after missing eight months of action due to a serious shoulder injury. In the weeks and months that followed, “The Celtic Warrior” had some of the most hard-hitting matches of his career. While he came out of the bouts with some bumps and bruises, it’s safe to say that he thoroughly enjoyed himself.

During a recent appearance on the “My Mom’s Basement” podcast, Sheamus revealed his favorite matches of 2024.

“I really enjoyed that last triple threat at Survivor Series [versus Bron Breakker and Ludwig Kaiser], which was probably my last match of 2024. But, man, there’s been a lot, like, I think the first match I had with Ivar where I came back with extra cushion around my waist was a pretty nerve-wracking one for me because I didn’t even think I was going to be able to wrestle again, so I came back on that one,” he said. “I was pretty nervous with that, but Ivar is such a great talent it was easy enough. Also, the triple threat, I think, with me, Drew [McIntyre] and [Ilja] Dragunov, I think that was the match for me that I actually belt, ‘I’m back.’”

Sheamus explained that the reason he was so nervous about his neck was because he thought he had aggravated the injury in one of his first matches back, but after the bout with McIntyre and Dragunov, he knew that he was going to be fine and fully committed to his goal of finally winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship. However, his attempt to dethrone Bron Breakker at Saturday Night’s Main Event on January 25 was unsuccessful.

  • Big E Reveals His Favorite Royal Rumble Memory

Big E reveals his favorite Royal Rumble memory.

Big E has been in several Royal Rumble matches throughout his time in WWE, but has yet to win the match. At present, E is currently out of action with a neck injury he suffered in 2022, and has yet to be cleared for a return to the ring.

Matt Hardy Gives His Prediction For The 2025 Women’s Royal Rumble Match

While speaking to Indy Sports Daily in an interview at the Boys And Girls Club event in Indianapolis for Rumble week, Big E was asked about his favorite Royal Rumble memories.

“Oh man the Rumble’s such a special event for so many different people. When I was cool with my old partners, I just think we had a lot of fun. There was one Kofi save where we had a basket toss. He landed on a pile of pancakes, and Woods was a cheerleader in grade school, and he taught me how to basket toss. So we basket tossed Kofi up in the air. That’s one of those things where if you mess it up live, it’s like, all right, it’s done. But to be able to be a part of one of Kofi’s saves was really cool. So that’s one of my fonder memories too. But no, the Rumble is just, it’s really cool because I think when I talk to friends and fans and people close to my orbit, so many of them are so excited. So many of the people I know, this is their favorite PLE, and they’re so excited. So the first thing, I got in yesterday, and I saw some European fans here. They’re so excited. I met this dude from Australia who flew 20 hours to be here for this. There’s so much excitement for the Royal Rumble.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Big E was asked if it was hard for him to remain positive all the time. You can read more about that here.

  • Insider Predicts Shocking Position Change for Philadelphia Phillies Fan Favorite

The Philadelphia Phillies addressed their starting rotation concerns this winter.

While it’s easy to argue that should have been the least of their worries considering they finished the regular season tied for the seventh-best ERA (3.81) in Major League Baseball, one could only wonder what that number would have been if they had a competent fifth starter.

Taijuan Walker was a disaster last year, and the options they brought in to try and replace him proved they weren’t ready to be handed the ball every fifth day.

So, the Phillies acquired Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins, buying low on the left-hander coming off an injury-riddled campaign last year even though he showed he’s one of the top arms in the sport when he was healthy in 2023.

On paper, the rotation looks set.

Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola will lead the unit with Ranger Suarez, Cristopher Sanchez and Luzardo slotted somewhere in the mix wherever it makes sense to deploy the three lefties.

But, following a strong return to the mound in the Arizona Fall League, Philadelphia is ready to unleash their superstar pitching prospect Andrew Painter onto the MLB, eyeing a call up time during the summer so he doesn’t exceed his innings limit before an expected playoff run.

When he arrives, that will give the Phillies six starting pitchers, and since they are unlikely to utilize a six-man rotation considering Wheeler’s dislike of it, that means someone is going to see their role get changed.

Matt Gelb of The Athletic thinks it will be Suarez.

“… if anything, I could see them moving Suárez (or a different starter) to the bullpen. But my guess is not everyone stays healthy,” he wrote when asked if the lefty could be moved at the deadline.

The health aspect is crucial here.

Philadelphia has enjoyed a good string of positive variance when it comes to their pitchers avoiding injuries, and for the cynics out there, they might say it’s only a matter of time until that changes.

If everyone does stay off the injured list, though, it’s interesting to see the prediction that Suarez would be the one who gets his role reduced to reliever, but when diving in, it does make sense.

While he’s become a fan favorite for what he’s done as a starting pitching in the playoffs, he began his career in the bullpen and is still working on building up his arm for the workload that’s necessary to pitch at a high level every fifth day 30 times per year.

Suarez was a full-time starter in 2022, making 29 starts and throwing his career-high in innings with 155.1.

The following season, he began the year on the injured list with an elbow strain, not making his first appearance until May before he found himself on the IL again with a hamstring strain.

That resulted in just 22 starts and 125 innings pitched.

This past campaign, Suarez was in the NL Cy Young mix early on, carrying a sizzling 2.27 ERA through the month of June that earned him his first All-Star nod. But in the eight starts after the Midsummer Classic, his ERA was 5.65, which also saw him miss time on the injured list with a lower back issue.

All of that is to say, using the lefty out of the bullpen for the second half of the year might actually allow him to be more effective for this Phillies team.

And with more gas left in the tank, he could still provide those incredible playoff moments, just this time around, he can go deeper into games and not turn things over to the bullpen unit early in the contest.

According to an insider source, a shocking position change may be on the horizon for a Philadelphia Phillies fan favorite. Rumors are swirling that the beloved player could be moving to a new position that will surprise and intrigue fans.

While details are still scarce, this potential change has sparked excitement and speculation among Phillies supporters. Could this player be transitioning to a new role that will showcase their versatility and talent in a whole new way?

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops and the Philadelphia Phillies make their official announcement regarding this unexpected position change for one of their most beloved players. Fans are sure to be on the edge of their seats as they await confirmation of this exciting news.

  • Will Jets hire favorite to land key assistant job, or should Aaron Glenn look elsewhere?

Aaron Glenn began filling out his coaching staff Wednesday with three hires, including defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo.

And there’s a chance he could fill his final coordinator job, and arguably the most important hire he’ll make as the coach here, before the weekend arrives.

Ever since Glenn was hired last week, the Jets have been linked closely to Lions passing game coordinator Tenner Engstrand – the only name to gain real traction for open offensive coordinator job.

Now we’re about to find out if there’s fire under all that smoke. There was with Wilks, who also emerged as a font-runner right after Glenn got the job. But Wilks is also one of the most experienced coaches in the league and a perfect fit with Glenn giving up play calling to take a wider view of the team as a first-year head coach.

Engstrand is viewed as a sharp offensive mind with a lot of potential. But there’s an element of risk there because he hasn’t had much of a chance to prove it in a meaningful way.

BUY NFL TICKETS: STUBHUB, VIVID SEATS, TICKETSMARTER, TICKETMASTER

He has only two years of NFL experience as a positional and only four years of experience at this level total (he spent his first two years in Detroit as a offensive assistant and quality offensive control coach).

But he has some past relationships that that could help him in the job. And years of experience calling plays, even if its not at the NFL level.

Engstrand was an offensive coordinator at the University of San Diego, his alma mater, a few years after he started his career there as a graduate assistant under Jim Harbaugh.

He spent seven seasons as the San Diego OC before joining Harbaugh in Michigan as an offensive analyst in 2018.

In 2020 he was the offensive coordinator for the XFL’S DC Defenders. He joined the Lions staff on the ground floor in 2021, watching and helping coach Dan Campbell, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and Glenn turn Detroit from a punchline into a contender.

All of that experience, both from an x’s and o’s standpoint and from coaching personalities, should have him well equipped for a coordinator job if he’s been paying attention.

Yes, it would be a bit of a risk, but Glenn knows what he’s getting after working with Engstrand for the last four years, and any offensive coordinator the Jets hire will be a risk because they’ve gone through seven in the last nine years .

The only thing that gives us a slight bit of pause about Engstrand? Johnson passed him over when it came time to hire his OC in Chicago, and Campbell did the same.

The New York Jets are in the market for a key assistant coach, and former player Aaron Glenn is said to be a favorite for the position. However, with other teams showing interest in Glenn, should he consider looking elsewhere for his next coaching opportunity? Stay tuned for updates on the Jets’ coaching search and Glenn’s potential future with the team.

  • Fed’s favorite Inflation gauge showed price growth picked up in December

The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge showed prices rose as expected in December, and it remains above the central bank’s target level amid its ongoing efforts to wrestle down inflation.

The Commerce Department on Friday reported that the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index was up 0.3% from the prior month and 2.6% on an annual basis. Those figures were in line with the estimates of economists polled by LSEG.

Core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.2% for the month and increased 2.8% from a year ago, in line with estimates.

Federal Reserve policymakers are focusing on the PCE headline figure as they try to slow the pace of price increases to their target of 2%, though they view core data as a better indicator of inflation. Headline PCE ticked higher from an annual rate of 2.4% in November to 2.6% last month, while core PCE has been at 2.8% for three consecutive months.

Headline PCE showed prices for goods were flat in December, while prices for services rose by 3.8% from a year ago. Food prices were up 1.6% last month when compared with a year ago, while energy prices were down 1.1% during that period.

Wages and salaries were up 0.4% in December compared with the prior month – a slight deceleration after October and November both saw wage and salary growth of 0.5% in those months.

The personal savings rate as a percentage of disposable income was 3.8% in December. That metric declined from 4.3% in October to 4.1% in November and had been nearly 5% last spring.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

The Federal Reserve’s favorite inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index, showed that price growth picked up in December. This could have implications for the Fed’s future monetary policy decisions.

The PCE index rose by 0.4% in December, slightly higher than the 0.3% increase in November. On an annual basis, the index increased by 5.8%, marking the largest year-over-year gain since 1982.

The increase in inflation was driven by higher prices for goods and services, including food, energy, and housing. This could signal that inflationary pressures are building in the economy, which may prompt the Fed to consider raising interest rates sooner than expected.

However, it’s important to note that the Fed has repeatedly stated that it expects inflation to be transitory and will not require immediate action. The central bank has indicated that it will continue to monitor economic data closely before making any decisions on interest rates.

Overall, the latest data on inflation from the PCE index is a reminder that price pressures are still present in the economy. It will be interesting to see how the Fed responds to this latest information in the coming months.

  • MLB rumors: Possible favorite for Max Scherzer emerges, Mets already back in contact with Pete Alonso

Major League Baseball is only a few weeks away from seeing camps open across Florida and Arizona in preparation for the exhibition season. This, then, is the opportune time for teams to add the finishing touches to their rosters as they prepare for the year ahead. With that in mind, CBS Sports has gathered all of Wednesday’s most notable news, moves, and rumors in one convenient spot for your consuming pleasure.

    Blue Jays favored on Scherzer

The Blue Jays “appear to be the most serious about signing” veteran right-hander Max Scherzer, according to MLB.com.

Scherzer, 40, was limited to just nine starts last season because of physical issues. He amassed a 3.95 ERA (101 ERA+) and a 4.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio in those appearances. CBS Sports ranked him as the 12th-best free agent entering this winter, anticipating that he would sign a one-year deal with a high AAV:

Scherzer was restricted by injury to nine starts this season; none before June, and just one after August. Add in his limited availability down the stretch in 2023, and it seems fair to think that the wheels are starting to come unglued for the 40-year-old. Still, Scherzer has expressed his desire to pitch in 2025. Who are we to scoff at the idea? Besides, he performed well when he was able to, leaving us no doubt that a team will gladly sign him to a one-year pact — if only to ensure they’re mentioned some day down the road, when he’s giving his induction speech in Cooperstown.

The Blue Jays have added Anthony Santander, Andrés Giménez, Jeff Hoffman, and Myles Straw, among others, to their projected roster this winter.

    Mets resume Alonso talks

Over the weekend, Mets owner Steve Cohen fussed about how “exhausting” the negotiations with longtime first baseman and free agent Pete Alonso had become. Just days later, Cohen is again in touch with Alonso and agent Scott Boras, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

It’s unclear if the odds of the Mets bringing back Alonso have improved, declined, or remained the same since Cohen went public with his frustrations.

“I don’t like the structures that are being presented back to us,” Cohen said at the team’s fan fest event. “I think it’s highly asymmetric against us. I feel strongly about it. I will never say ‘no,’ there’s always a possibility but the reality is we’re moving forward as we continue to bring in players, it’s hard to bring Pete into what is a very expensive group of players that we already have. That’s where we are. I’m being brutally honest.”

Cohen divulged that the Mets had made Alonso a “significant” offer. Media reports from earlier this month indicated New York had put forth a three-year pact worth around $70 million, or a slightly sweeter version of the three-year, $60 million deal that Christian Walker signed with the Astros.

The Mets have already asked young infielders Mark Vientos and Brett Baty to prepare to play first base during spring training. Of course, it’s not unusual for teams to request such things of their players regardless of their intentions elsewhere — at minimum, it would improve their optionality in case of injury or underperformance.

    Mets ink Stanek

Speaking of the Mets and reunions, they have reached an agreement to bring back a different member of their 2024 roster: reliever Ryne Stanek. Per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, Stanek will rejoin the Mets on a one-year deal. He’s expected to make $4.5 million with a chance to earn an additional $500,000 in incentives, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Stanek, 33, is an eight-year veteran who posted a 6.06 ERA (66 ERA+) in 16 ⅓ regular-season innings with the Mets. The playoffs went much better, allowing three earned runs over eight innings. For his career, he’s amassed a 114 ERA+ in more than 400 big-league appearances.

The Tigers have signed free-agent reliever Tommy Kahnle, the team announced Wednesday. The one-year deal will net him $7.75 million, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Kahnle, 35, spent last season with the Yankees. He compiled a 2.11 ERA (196 ERA+) and a 2.42 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 42 innings. He figures to be used in a middle relief or setup role for Detroit.

    Reds bring in Rogers

The Reds have acquired lefty reliever Taylor Rogers from the Giants in exchange for Double-A reliever Braxton Roxby, the teams announced Wednesday. San Francisco will pay $6 million of Rogers’ $12 million salary in 2025, according to MLB.com. Rogers, 34, had a 2.40 ERA with 64 strikeouts in 60 innings last year, albeit with underwhelming peripherals. The Giants put him on waivers last year and any team could have claimed Rogers and his salary, but they all passed. Roxby, 25, had a 5.21 ERA in 2024.

In the latest MLB rumors, a possible favorite for star pitcher Max Scherzer has emerged, and the New York Mets are already back in contact with slugger Pete Alonso.

According to reports, the Los Angeles Dodgers are seen as a potential front-runner to sign Scherzer in free agency. The Dodgers have a history of making big moves and have the financial flexibility to offer Scherzer a lucrative contract. However, other teams such as the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are also said to be interested in the veteran right-hander.

Meanwhile, the Mets have wasted no time in reaching out to Alonso after the lockout ended. The team is reportedly looking to engage in contract extension talks with the All-Star first baseman, who has quickly become a fan favorite in New York. Alonso has expressed his desire to remain with the Mets long-term, and negotiations are expected to begin in the coming weeks.

As the offseason heats up, it will be interesting to see where Scherzer ultimately lands and if Alonso and the Mets can come to an agreement on a contract extension. Stay tuned for more updates on these developing MLB rumors.

As the MLB offseason heats up, rumors are swirling about potential landing spots for top free agents like Max Scherzer. One team that has emerged as a possible favorite for the star pitcher is the New York Mets.

According to sources, the Mets are already back in contact with first baseman Pete Alonso, who has been a key player for the team in recent years. Alonso’s presence in the lineup could be a major factor in attracting Scherzer to New York.

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, is coming off a strong season with the Washington Nationals and is expected to command a hefty contract in free agency. The Mets have the financial resources to make a competitive offer and could be a strong contender for his services.

While nothing is set in stone, the Mets’ interest in Scherzer is certainly intriguing and could make them a team to watch as the offseason progresses. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
