  • FBI acting chief says he’s retiring as Trump’s pick to lead the bureau awaits Senate confirmation

WASHINGTON – Paul Abbate, who became the FBI’s acting director following the departure of Christopher Wray, is retiring from the bureau, according to an email he sent to senior executives that was obtained by The Associated Press on Monday.

Abbate had been expected to run the FBI while Senate confirmation proceedings get underway for Kash Patel, who is President Donald Trump’s pick for director. But with Abbate’s retirement effective Monday, when Trump took office, it was not immediately clear who would fill that role.

“When the Director asked me to stay on past my mandatory date for a brief time, I did so to help ensure continuity and the best transition for the FBI. Now, with new leadership inbound, after nearly four years in the deputy role, I am departing the FBI today,” Abbate wrote.

Abbate’s abrupt departure after 28 years with the FBI creates additional tumult for a law enforcement agency that had already been preparing for upheaval in the event Patel is confirmed. A Trump loyalist, Patel has repeatedly criticized FBI leadership and decision-making and has alarmed Democrats with statements that suggest he would be willing to use the FBI to exact retribution on Trump adversaries.

Though Abbate’s email did not identify who might succeed him, and the FBI did not immediately identify anyone, the bureau does have a succession plan, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Wray’s final day was Sunday, making Abbate acting director, though he only stayed in the role for a day.

Abbate held a variety of leadership roles in his nearly three-decade career at the FBI, including head of the bureau’s Detroit and Washington field offices and executive assistant director for the criminal, cyber, response and services branch. He was named deputy director, the No. 2 position responsible for the FBI’s investigative activities, in 2018.

“As you move forward, continue to stay true to our core values, be there for our partners, and take care of those who serve alongside you. Thank you for your service,” Abbate wrote.

Wray was named by Trump during his first term and had been director for more than seven years. Wray announced his retirement last month, more than a week after Trump said he wanted Patel to be the director.

The FBI Acting Chief Announces Retirement as Trump’s Nominee Awaits Senate Confirmation

In a surprising turn of events, the Acting Chief of the FBI has announced his retirement as President Trump’s nominee to lead the bureau awaits confirmation from the Senate. This decision comes at a critical time for the FBI, as it continues to face scrutiny and controversy over its handling of various investigations.

The Acting Chief, who has served in the bureau for decades, cited personal reasons for his retirement and expressed confidence in the President’s nominee to lead the agency. However, his departure has raised questions about the stability and leadership of the FBI during this transition period.

The Senate confirmation process for the President’s nominee is expected to be contentious, with both Democrats and Republicans expressing concerns about the nominee’s qualifications and potential conflicts of interest. The Acting Chief’s retirement only adds to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the FBI and its role in the current political climate.

As the Senate prepares to vote on the President’s nominee, the FBI faces a challenging road ahead. The Acting Chief’s retirement serves as a reminder of the importance of strong and stable leadership within the bureau, and the need for transparency and accountability in its operations. Only time will tell how this latest development will impact the FBI and its ability to fulfill its crucial mission of upholding the rule of law and protecting the American people.

  • Acting FBI director retires after Wray departure, minutes before Trump sworn in

The acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Paul Abbate, reportedly retired just minutes before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president.

Former FBI Director Christopher Wray announced on Dec. 11 that he would step down from the bureau before Trump took office, and Wray’s resignation went into effect Sunday.

Abbate, who took the helm from Wray, stepped down from the bureau just a day later, the New York Times reported.

His departure took effect at noon ET Monday, around the same time Trump was slated to take his oath of office at the U.S. Capitol. It was not immediately clear who will replace Abbate as acting FBI director.

“When the director asked me to stay on past my mandatory date for a brief time, I did so to help ensure continuity and the best transition for the F.B.I. Now, with new leadership inbound, after nearly four years in the deputy role, I am departing the F.B.I.,” Abbate wrote in an internal email on Monday, according to the New York Times. “I have complete confidence in you and in your ability as a team to continue to carry out our mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution.”

Wray selected Abbate as deputy FBI director in 2021 and extended his length of service. At 57, Abbate is the mandatory retirement age for some FBI agents, according to the New York Times.

STEVE BANNON WARNS OF WORLD CONFLICT THAT COULD BE ‘TRUMP’S VIETNAM’

Trump appointed Wray to lead the bureau in 2017, but relations between the two soured amid repeated federal investigations into the 45th and now-47th president. The FBI raided Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, in August 2022.

Trump decried the “weaponization” of the Justice Department during his 2024 presidential campaign, and he has since tapped Kash Patel to lead the FBI. Patel’s Senate confirmation hearing has not yet been scheduled.

“The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” Trump said in his inauguration speech. “The vicious, violent and unfair weaponization of the Justice Department and our government will end.”

The sudden retirement of Acting FBI director, Andrew McCabe, has sent shockwaves through the political world. McCabe’s departure comes just minutes before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, and follows the resignation of FBI director James Comey.

With the FBI in a state of flux, many are questioning the timing of McCabe’s retirement and what it could mean for the future of the agency. Some are speculating that McCabe’s departure is a direct result of Trump’s decision to appoint Christopher Wray as the new FBI director, while others believe it may be related to the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Regardless of the reasons behind McCabe’s retirement, one thing is certain: the FBI is facing a period of uncertainty and transition. It remains to be seen how Wray will lead the agency and whether he will be able to restore confidence in the FBI’s ability to impartially investigate and uphold the rule of law.

As Trump takes the oath of office, all eyes will be on the FBI and its new director, as they navigate the challenges and responsibilities that lie ahead.

  • Acting FBI chief unexpectedly retires as Trump’s pick awaits confirmation

FBI’s longtime deputy director, who had been expected to temporarily replace director Christopher Wray on an acting basis during the transition into the new Trump administration, says he is retiring. Paul Abbate made the unexpected announcement in an email to senior officials Monday ahead of President Trump’s inauguration, CBS News confirmed.

“When the Director asked me to stay on past my mandatory date for a brief time, I did so to help ensure continuity and the best transition for the FBI. Now, with new leadership inbound, after nearly four years in the deputy role, I am departing the FBI today,” Abbate wrote in the letter, according to the Associated Press, which obtained a copy of the email.

Abbate had been running the FBI for only one day after Wray stepped down as director on Sunday. Wray was named by Trump during his first term and had been director for more than seven years. He announced his retirement when Trump said he wanted Kash Patel to be the director.

Abbate’s email did not say who would replace him atop the bureau during the interim. Following the inauguration, the White House posted a list of acting leaders that said Brian Driscoll will serve as head of the FBI until the position is filled.

  • Sheng Thao, ex-Oakland mayor, indicted in FBI investigation

Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury on criminal charges related to an FBI bribery case, the Department of Justice announced Friday, six months after agents raided her home and two months after she was voted out of office.

Thao’s longtime boyfriend, Andre Jones, and David Duong and his son, Andy Duong, were also charged in the indictment.

U.S. Attorney Patrick D. Robbins said the defendants used bribes, mail fraud, wire fraud, and other illegal practices to manipulate and corruptly influence local government.

Robbins said the defendants knowingly entered into agreements “knowing that bribes would be offered and accepted by Thao and Jones in exchange for allowing the Duong’s to exercise illegal influence over the levers of city government.”

The San Francisco Chronicle was first to report this latest development.

Thao, Jones, and the Duongs appeared before a judge at the United States Courthouse in Oakland around 11 a.m. Following the arraignment, the former mayor exited the courthouse alongside her attorney, Jeff Tsai, who addressed the media on her behalf.

“The case is built on allegations from an unknown co-conspirator that we believe when the evidence is revealed will show that my client has committed no crimes,” said Tsai. “The indictment’s timing as well, is curious, we think the timing has amplified the politicization of this issue, but it has not served the ends of justice, ensuring that everyone is treated fairly.”

After Tsai addressed the media, he and Thao went back inside the courthouse for processing by U.S. Marshals on the federal charges. She was then interviewed for pre-trial services. She appeared calm and was quiet.

A federal judge said Thao is free on an unsecured bond with travel limits. She must surrender her passport.

    When did it start?

    What we know:

According to the indictment, the illegal dealings began in October 2022, before the November Oakland mayoral election. Before the election, Thao allegedly made promises that would benefit the Duong family if she were elected.

“Examples of promises allegedly made by Thao included her agreement to purchase housing units from a company owned by the Duong family, her agreement to ensure the extension of a contract for recycling services that the City of Oakland had with one of David and Andy Duong’s companies, and her agreement to use influence to help appoint a high-level city official to benefit the Duong’s business interests.,” said Robbins.

    The exchange

Federal officials said that in exchange for Thao carrying out her commitments, the Duongs made payments to Thao and her boyfriend in various forms, including funding a $75,000 negative mailer campaign targeting her political rivals. The Duong family also made $95,000 in payments to Thao and her boyfriend disguised as wages for a no-show job for Jones. The payments were made to look as if Jones had a legitimate job with the Duongs housing company to cover up the bribery.

Federal officials said Thao directed that the payments be made to Jones to avoid a “paper trail.”

Once Thao was elected, she fulfilled her promise to use her influence to appoint an Oakland city official, selected by the Duongs, to protect the family’s business investments, including the housing company and recycling business. That city official is not named in the indictment.

    FBI raid at Thao’s home

    The backstory:

Thao’s home was raided by the FBI in June, though at the time, the agency would not confirm what they were investigating.

“The FBI is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane. We are unable to provide additional information at this time,” the department said in June.

FBI agents were seen coming in and out of the Maiden Lane home with gloves and badges.

Thao was not seen at the home when agents carried out the raid.

RELATED: The real politics of the federal raid on Oakland’s mayor

At least three other locations were also raided in 2023 and were being investigated by the FBI, including 1211 Embarcadero, the location of Cal Waste, owned by the Duong Family.

FBI raid at 3 more locations

The two other locations were also associated with the Duong family, on View Crest Court and Skyline Boulevard.

At the View Crest home, a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous told KTVU in June he saw two people in handcuffs at the home, as FBI agents continued their investigation.

RELATED: Oakland mayor’s lawyer says she has ‘nothing to hide,’ ‘will cooperate’ with FBI investigation

    Who is the Duong Family?

The Duong family is heavily involved in politics and fundraising for politicians in state and local government. The IRS also confirmed with KTVU that their criminal investigation agents were at the scene of Cal Waste on Embarcadero for law enforcement reasons.

The Duong family owns Cal Waste Solution. David Duong and his son Andy Duong are the only members of the family charged.

Winston Chan, an attorney for Andy Duong, told KTVU in a statement that his client is innocent and that the allegations have no merit.

“We have kept quiet despite the media frenzy of the past months in the hope that the government would correctly come to see through objective investigation that the allegations are baseless, and being fanned by nothing more than gossip and supposition stitched together by the fabrications and delusions of those who lack all fundamental credibility,” said Chan. “But disappointingly, Andy instead is today the most recent in a long line of Asian Americans who unfairly are singled out and forced to pay a price for daring to be active in the political sphere.  We look forward to clearing his good name before the court and a jury of his peers.”

    Who is Andre Jones?

Following the FBI raid of Thao’s home, Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker was required to hand over documents to federal officials, including those related to Andre Jones.

Parker was instructed to preserve and provide documents and communications tied to Jones, who had been the assistant chief for the State Bureau of Cannabis Control. He has been Thao’s romantic partner for 10 years. The two met when he was chief of staff for Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan, where Thao also worked.

Federal agents requested documents related to the 2022 Oakland mayoral election and all calendar entries involving Thao and Jones from June 1, 2022, to the present.

    Thao’s denial

    The other side:

Thao has consistently said she is innocent of any crime or wrongdoing.

“I am 1,000% confident that I will be vindicated,” Thao said in 2024.”I still have the same questions. What was the probable cause to come into my home, to make this huge scene? You know, at the end of the day, the reason why I’m still making sure that we’re moving with all the successes in the city of Oakland is because I know I did nothing wrong.”

    Thao’s recall

    Dig deeper:

Thao was recalled by Oakland voters in the November election. Thao’s recall, along with former District Attorney Pamela Price, were the first successful recalls in the city’s history.

The last time a mayoral recall vote occurred in Oakland was in 1917 against Mayor John Davis, and it was unsuccessful, the city clerk’s office told the San Francisco Chronicle. There were calls to recall Mayor Libby Schaaf and Mayor Jean Quan, but those efforts never made the ballot.

    Thao departs mayoral seat

Thao departed her mayoral seat in December after the recall election. Nikki Fortunado Bas served as mayor until Jan. 6, when she assumed her role as an Alameda County supervisor. City councilmember Kevin Jenkins was appointed president of Oakland’s city council on Jan. 6, allowing him to become the city’s interim mayor.

Voters will choose the city’s next mayor in an April special election.

    Sheng ThaoOakland

Sheng Thao, ex-Oakland mayor, indicted in FBI investigation

Former Oakland mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted in an FBI investigation for alleged corruption and misconduct during her time in office. The indictment comes after months of speculation and rumors surrounding Thao’s actions while serving as mayor.

According to the FBI, Thao is accused of accepting bribes from developers in exchange for favorable treatment and contracts. The investigation also uncovered evidence of embezzlement and fraud within Thao’s administration.

Thao, who was elected as mayor in a landslide victory just two years ago, has vehemently denied the allegations and plans to fight the charges in court. However, many residents and officials in Oakland are shocked and disappointed by the news.

This scandal has rocked the city and raised questions about transparency and accountability in local government. As the case unfolds, the people of Oakland are left wondering how such corruption could have gone undetected for so long.

  • Trump Loses It for Some Reason After FBI Shutters DEI Office

It isn’t enough for the FBI’s DEI office to be shut down—Donald Trump wants it gutted, and with receipts.

“We demand that the FBI preserve and retain all records, documents, and information on the now closing DEI Office—Never should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago,” the president-elect wrote on Truth Social. “Why is it that they’re closing one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration? The reason is, CORRUPTION!”

The FBI began phasing out the office, officially titled the “Office of Diversity and Inclusion,” or ODI, in December, the agency first confirmed to Fox News on Thursday.

The FBI came under fire recently as many on the right openly blamed the deadly truck attack on New Year’s Day in New Orleans on the agency’s DEI policies.

“The priority of the last four years has been DEI, not IEDs,” New York Republican Representative Dan Meuser told Fox News at the time. “You talk to anyone who’s willing to speak within these agencies, that’s what their focus has been.… President Trump’s a serious guy, he’s bringing in serious people. It’s not about DEI; it’s about the safety and security of the American people.”

“An FBI Agent with a nose ring who can barely speak coherent English sentences told the media that a terrorist driving a truck with an ISIS flag killing 10 Americans is NOT a terrorist attack!?!” conservative YouTuber and serial plagiarist Benny Johnson wrote on X, referring to a video of FBI Special Agent Alethea Duncan, who is Black, speaking perfect English at a press conference. “Seriously. Listen to this. We need Kash Patel NOW!”

The ODI office isn’t closing because of corruption, like Trump is claiming in all caps on Truth Social. It’s likely closing for the same reason Walmart, Meta, McDonald’s, and others are reneging on DEI policy: Trump is back. Either they’re caving to Trump in advance, or they’re excited to go mask-off again with their everyday bigotry.

“I feel liberated,” one top banker told the Financial Times on Tuesday. “We can say ‘retard’ and ‘pussy’ without the fear of getting cancelled.… It’s a new dawn.”

It’s also why the historically lauded Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department is in jeopardy too.

President Trump’s latest outburst has left many scratching their heads after the FBI announced the closure of its Diversity and Equity and Inclusion (DEI) office.

In a series of tweets, Trump criticized the move, calling it a “disgrace” and accusing the FBI of caving to political correctness. He went on to claim that the closure of the DEI office was evidence of a broader trend of “woke culture” infiltrating government agencies.

The FBI has defended its decision, stating that the DEI office was redundant and that its functions will be integrated into other departments within the agency. However, Trump’s reaction has raised eyebrows, with many questioning his motives for speaking out on this particular issue.

Some speculate that Trump’s reaction may be a way to deflect attention from ongoing investigations into his own administration, while others believe it is simply a reflection of his disdain for efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

Whatever the reason, Trump’s latest outburst has once again thrust him into the spotlight, reigniting debate over the role of diversity and equity initiatives in government agencies.

  • Trump Demands FBI Preserve Records On Shuttered DEI Office

    Topline

The FBI closed its diversity, equity and inclusion office in December, the agency confirmed in a statement to Forbes, prompting President-elect Donald Trump to demand the FBI “preserve and retain all records” relating to the office as he accused the agency of “corruption” in a Truth Social post.

    Key Facts

The FBI did not provide a reason for why it closed its DEI office, and it declined to comment on Trump’s Truth Social post.

Trump blasted the DEI office in his post, stating it “never should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago.”

Trump questioned why the office is closing “one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration”—although the office closed in December, according to the FBI—and accused the agency of “corruption.”

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., questioned why the FBI was “allowed to be focused on DEI in the first place” in a post on X Thursday, stating the agency should be “focused on catching criminals, not winning participation trophies.”

    Key Background

Federal diversity programs have come under scrutiny from Republicans in recent months, with some pointing fingers at the FBI’s DEI office after a truck driver in New Orleans drove into a crowd of people, killing 15 and wounding at least 35 others. Days after the attack, Blackburn sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, claiming that under Wray’s leadership, “the Bureau has prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives over its core mission of protecting the American people,” alleging the “woke DEI initiatives at the FBI has endangered our national security.” Blackburn’s letter cites a report retired FBI agents sent to the House Judiciary Committee in October 2023, which claimed the FBI’s law enforcement abilities are “degrading” because it is no longer hiring the “best and brightest” candidates, which the report blames on DEI. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., similarly blamed the “DEI movement” in a radio interview after the New Orleans attack, claiming the “main focus” of law enforcement agencies including the FBI is “diversity and inclusion as opposed to security.” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, opened an inquiry into the FBI’s hiring practices in May and sent a letter to Wray requesting documents related to the FBI’s DEI initiatives. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s Department of Government Efficiency is considering slashing federal diversity programs, citing a recommendation from the right-wing nonprofit, Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, which identified $120 billion in annual spending on these initiatives, the Washington Post reported.

    Tangent

The FBI’s DEI office closure comes amid a wave of backlash against DEI that has shaken up corporate America. Many companies have taken similar moves to shutter DEI offices and gut their diversity initiatives in recent months, including Amazon, which last week said it would end “outdated programs and materials,” and Meta, which said last week it had ended programs intended to increase diversity in hiring and diversity training sessions. Other companies that have rolled back some DEI programs include Boeing, which dismantled its DEI office, Lowe’s and Walmart. Some of these companies have been targeted online by conservative pressure campaigns, some led by activist and former music video director Robby Starbuck. Starbuck has claimed credit for Walmart and McDonald’s rolling back DEI initiatives, stating he had discussions with both companies before they announced changes to their DEI policies.

    Contra

Fewer companies have stood firm behind their DEI pledges, including Costco and Apple, both of which recommended its shareholders reject proposals that would require the companies to review, and potentially alter, their DEI commitments. Delta Airlines said it would not alter its DEI initiatives on an earnings call last week, calling diversity “critical to our business.”

In a recent move, former President Donald Trump has demanded that the FBI preserve all records related to the shuttered Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office. Trump has expressed concerns about the potential destruction of documents that could provide valuable insight into the workings of the controversial office.

The DEI office, which was established under the Obama administration, has come under scrutiny for its handling of diversity and inclusion initiatives within the FBI. Trump has long been critical of the office, claiming that it promoted a left-wing agenda and discriminated against conservative employees.

In a statement, Trump emphasized the importance of preserving these records for transparency and accountability. He has called on the FBI to ensure that all documents related to the DEI office are safeguarded and made available for review.

This latest development comes amid ongoing debates about diversity and inclusion efforts in government agencies. Trump’s demand for the preservation of DEI records is likely to reignite discussions about the role of such offices in promoting equality and fairness within organizations.

As the FBI grapples with these demands, the public will be watching closely to see how the agency responds to Trump’s request for transparency and accountability. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • FBI closed DEI office in December, agency says

EXCLUSIVE: The FBI has closed its DEI office, Fox News can confirm.

“In recent weeks, the FBI took steps to close the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), effective by December 2024,” the agency told Fox News Digital on Thursday.

The agency didn’t specify why it had closed the office, although many Republicans have been critical of it prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion, saying that had overshadowed national security.

Earlier this month, Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray claiming that “radical” DEI practices had “endangered” Americans following the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans.

IS DEI DYING? HERE’S THE LIST OF COMPANIES THAT HAVE ROLLED BACK THE ‘WOKE’ POLICIES

“I am deeply concerned that—under your leadership—the Bureau has prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives over its core mission of protecting the American people,” Balckburn wrote in the Jan. 3 letter after referencing the attack.

After the announcement, Blackburn said in a post on X: “The question is why were they allowed to be focused on DEI in the first place? The FBI should be focused on catching criminals, not winning participation trophies.”

President-elect Trump also commented on its closure, writing on Truth Social: “We demand that the FBI preserve and retain all records, documents, and information on the now closing DEI Office—Never should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago. Why is it that they’re closing one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration? The reason is, CORRUPTION!”

The FBI page on diversity and inclusion – that was still on its website as of Thursday – says the agency is “committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workforce. In 2015, the FBI added diversity as one of the organization’s core values.

It continued: “We believe that differences in thought and belief, in race and religion, in orientation, and in ability contribute to more effective decision making, drive innovation, and enhance the employee experience. We know that a more diverse workforce allows us to connect with and maintain the trust of the American people. We also understand we have work to do. We stand committed, as today’s FBI, to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity.”

Former FBI special agent and Fox News contributor Nicole Parker told Fox News Digital: “I appreciate all forms of diversity. Make no mistake of that. What I do not appreciate is when there is a constant push for social justice weaponization at the FBI whose top priorities are to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.”

She added that FBI Director Christopher Wray has made it clear that threats across and against the nation are “at an all-time high. ‘Flashing red lights,’ as he has stated in congressional testimony. There is no time for clubs, groups, or social agendas that divert time, attention and resources away from the mission of the FBI to protect the American people.”

“DEI is a dangerous distraction,” she continued. “I have no issue in celebrating whatever you would like regarding your heritage or gender or religion. But that should be done on your own time and not with the U.S. taxpayers’ dollars while on official Bureau time.”

Parker added, “The FBI needs to focus on hiring the best and brightest based solely on meritocracy. Americans deserve the best. I have never been on an operation or heard of a civilian calling into the FBI and requesting an individual of a certain race or gender provide them with assistance in solving their problem or stopping a crime they’ve fallen victim to. Americans simply want to be safe.”

“The FBI should be focused on being one in fighting crime, not various groups and divisions that divide,” she said.

Parker also noted that there are numerous other groups within the FBI aside from the DEI office, including the American Indian and Alaska Native Advisory Committee, Asian Pacific American Advisory Committee, Black Affairs Diversity Committee, Bureau Equality, Hispanic Advisory Board, Near and Middle East Advisory Committee, Persons with Disabilities Advisory Committee, Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee, and the Women’s Advisory Committee.

She said the bureau also has numerous resource groups, including Blacks in Government, FBI African American Millennials, FBI Family, FBI Jewish Americans, FBI Latinos for Empowerment Advancement and Development, FBI Pride, Federal Asian Pacific American Counsel, Federally Employed Women, From Boots to Suits and the Toastmasters Club.

Wray announced in December that he planned to resign with nearly three years left in his term, citing Trump’s desire for a change in leadership at the agency.

This is President Biden’s last week in office. President-elect Trump will take office on Monday.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, for comment.

In 2021, after Biden took office, Scott McMillion became the FBI’s first chief diversity officer, saying that he planned to spearhead a “cultural shift” at the agency.

In a shocking turn of events, the FBI has announced that they closed their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office in December. This decision comes as a surprise to many, as the office was created just a few years ago in an effort to promote diversity and inclusivity within the agency.

The FBI has stated that the closure of the DEI office was part of a larger restructuring effort, aimed at streamlining operations and improving efficiency. However, critics are concerned that this move will set back the agency’s progress towards creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

Many are calling on the FBI to reconsider this decision and to prioritize diversity and inclusion within the agency. As the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, it is crucial that the FBI leads by example and fosters a workplace that is welcoming and supportive of all individuals.

It remains to be seen what the long-term implications of this decision will be, but one thing is clear: the fight for diversity and inclusion is far from over. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Live updates: New Orleans truck attack, FBI identifies suspect as Shamsud-Din Jabbar

Tiger Bech was among those killed in the New Orleans attack on Wednesday.

Former Princeton football player Tiger Bech, 27, was among at least 14 people killed in the New Orleans attack on Wednesday, his sister confirmed to CNN.

Virginia Bech, 29, said her younger brother was outside a pizza shop on Bourbon Street, walking back to his hotel with a friend, when the attack unfolded.

His friend, Ryan Quigley, was wounded in the attack, she said.

Tiger Bech, from Lafayette, Louisiana, played college football at Princeton and moved to New York City after graduating in 2021 to work as a junior trader for Seaport Global Holdings, a capital markets firm, his sister said.

He was visiting Louisiana for the holidays.

The FBI confirmed Thursday that 14 people were killed in the terror attack in New Orleans. The attacker is also dead. The New Orleans Coroner previously announced 15 deaths but did not provide any identifying information about the decedents.

The last time Virginia Bech heard from her brother was shortly before 1:30 a.m. when he texted their family group chat saying, “Happy new year.”

The last message she sent to her brother said: “Happy new year Tig. I love you and so proud of all you accomplished in 2024. 2025, let’s get it!”

A few hours later, Tiger was dead. His sister said he sustained internal injuries, including head trauma, in the attack when a driver rammed a pickup truck into the crowd on Bourbon Street.

His friend, Quigley, is in a stable condition but suffered a severe laceration to the head and a broken leg, Virginia Bech said.

Princeton’s football coach Bob Surace described Tiger Bech as “a ferocious competitor with endless energy, a beloved teammate and a caring friend.”

Hailing from a family of athletes, most of whom played football at Louisiana State University, Tiger was beloved by friends and family as a larger-than-life person who loved to travel, his sister said.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this post included the attacker in the number of people killed. At least 14 people were killed. The attacker is also dead.

The FBI has identified the suspect in the New Orleans truck attack as Shamsud-Din Jabbar. Stay tuned for live updates as the investigation unfolds. #NewOrleansAttack #FBIInvestigation

FBI Now Believes Suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar Acted Alone

    Topline

The FBI no longer believes other suspects were involved in a truck ramming attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people early on New Year’s Day, officials said Thursday—a reversal after the FBI previously said suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who was allegedly inspired by ISIS, likely did not act alone.

    Key Facts

The FBI does “not assess at this point that anyone else is involved in this attack except for Shamsud-Din Jabbar,” Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia said in a press conference Thursday, describing the attack as an act of terrorism.

A day earlier, FBI officials said they did not believe Jabbar—a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas—was “solely responsible” for the attack, and news reports suggested police were looking into whether other people helped place improvised explosive devices on Bourbon Street, but Raia said the FBI now believes Jabbar placed the IEDs himself.

Raia also said there is “no definitive link” between the New Orleans attack and the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas hours later.

Law enforcement agencies say Jabbar drove a rented Ford F-150 pickup truck carrying an ISIS flag into the crowd on Bourbon Street—located in the city’s French Quarter—at around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday and then opened fire at police before he was killed in an ensuing gunfight.

At least 14 “innocent victims” are dead, according to Raia, after the New Orleans coroner said Wednesday the death toll stood at 15—and some 35 people have been reported injured, including two police officers who were shot and are in stable condition.

Hours before the attack, Raia says Jabbar posted a series of videos to Facebook claiming he joined ISIS before this summer, and suggesting he initially planned to hurt his family but was worried news stories wouldn’t emphasize the “war between the believers and the disbelievers.”

The FBI recovered two improvised explosive devices near the scene, and surveillance tape shows they were placed by Jabbar, according to Raia.

    Who Is Shamsud-Din Jabbar?

The FBI described Jabbar as a U.S.-born citizen who was honorably discharged from the Army. In 2022 divorce documents obtained by the Times, Jabbar said he made roughly $120,000 a year at Deloitte, but listed late home payments and credit card debt. He had two minor arrests, in 2002 for misdemeanor theft and in 2005 for driving with an invalid license. More information on Jabbar is available here.

What Do We Know About The Victims?

Seven people have been identified by friends or family as among those killed, though law enforcement officials have not released any victim identities and have said they will wait until autopsies are completed and next of kin can be notified. Among those kiled include former Princeton Univeristy football player Tiger Bech, University of Alabama freshman Kareen Badawi and 25-year-old Matthew Tenedorio. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill told “Fox & Friends” on Thursday that at least 10 more people are “clinging to life” in local hospitals.

Will The Sugar Bowl Be Affected?

The annual Sugar Bowl college football game between the University of Georgia and the University of Notre Dame was scheduled to take place Wednesday evening, but was postponed until Thursday. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans from across the country. Murrill, however, told “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning she thinks the game should be delayed at least another day as the investigation continues and out of the “respect we owe to the dead and to their families.”

    When Will Bourbon Street Reopen?

Bourbon Street—a popular tourist district—will re-open Thursday afternoon, Mayor LaToya Cantrell said. A local hotel worker told the New York Times he expects the area to return to its normal state of raucousness Thursday evening after the game between Notre Dame and Georgia.

Why Are Police Investigating A House Fire And An Airbnb Rental?

Officials believe improvised explosive devices may have been assembled at an Airbnb rental in New Orleans, Murrill told NBC on Wednesday. She added a house fire early Wednesday appears to be connected to the incident.

Where Else Is The Investigation Taking Place?

Beyond New Orleans, the FBI says it is “conducting law enforcement activity” in north Houston. The agency told CNN late Wednesday it is conducting a “court-authorized search of a location” in the city apparently linked to Jabbar, and the Times reports investigators visited Jabbar’s ex-wife’s Houston home.

Why Didn’t Barriers Protect Bourbon Street?

A set of removable metal bollards designed to prevent cars from driving onto Bourbon Street were not up during the attack, Cantrell confirmed Wednesday afternoon. The mayor said the city is in the process of replacing the bollards—which were first installed over a decade ago—before New Orleans hosts the Super Bowl next month, and they weren’t up late Tuesday because the project is “nearing completion.” Kirkpatrick noted the street was still blocked by a police car instead of metal bollards, but the suspect drove onto the sidewalk to get around the vehicle: “We did indeed have a plan, but the terrorist defeated it.” However, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said, “we recognize we’ve got a problem here,” and vowed that finding a solution is a “top priority.”

How Does The Fbi Define A Terrorist Incident?

In the hours following the attack, the was some initial confusion about whether law enforcement was investigating it as a terrorist incident, as the New Orleans mayor and an FBI special agent gave contradicting answers. Mayor LaToya Cantrell immediately called it a terrorist attack, while the FBI’s Alethea Duncan said, “this is not a terrorist event.” However, in a follow-up statement the FBI confirmed that the attack was being probed “as an act of terrorism.” The initial difference is likely due to the FBI having specific criteria for labeling an incident as an “act of terrorism.” The agency defines international terrorism as “Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups who are inspired by, or associated with, designated foreign terrorist organizations or nations.” Domestic terrorism involves similar acts committed by “individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature.” On its website, the agency notes that it is “bound by guidelines issued by the attorney general that establish a consistent policy” on when a terror investigation may be initiated. The FBI says its counterterrorism investigations “focus on the unlawful activity of the group, not the ideological orientation of its members.”

What Has Trump Said About The Attack?

President-elect Donald Trump said on Wednesday and Thursday the attack confirmed his claims about a rise in crime in the United States, and connected the attack to immigration, despite law enforcement officials reporting Jabbar is a U.S.-born citizen from Texas. Trump said Wednesday, “criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country,” and on Thursday attempted to connect the attack to Biden’s border policies. “I said, many times during Rallies, and elsewhere, that Radical Islamic Terrorism, and other forms of violent crime, will become so bad in America that it will become hard to even imagine or believe,” he wrote Thursday. “That time has come, only worse than ever imagined.”

Is The New Orleans Attack Related To The Las Vegas Cybertruck Explosion?

Raia said there’s no clear link. Hours after the attack in New Orleans, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The explosion is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, multiple news outlets have reported, though law enforcement says it’s not clear what caused the explosion or whether it was a terrorist incident. Biden said federal officials are looking into any possible connections but don’t have anything to report so far, and Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said his department is “not ruling anything out yet.”

Were The New Orleans And Las Vegas Trucks Both Rented With Turo?

The Ford allegedly used in New Orleans and the Tesla that exploded in Las Vegas were both rented through Turo, a peer-to-peer online platform that car owners can use to rent out their vehicles to others, the company told multiple news outlets. Turo said it does “not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat.”

In a shocking turn of events, the FBI has announced that they now believe suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar acted alone in the recent string of crimes that have terrorized the city. Initially thought to be part of a larger criminal organization, authorities have revealed that new evidence points to Jabbar as the sole perpetrator.

This revelation has sent shockwaves through the community, as many had feared that there were more dangerous individuals still at large. However, with Jabbar now in custody and facing multiple charges, residents can rest a little easier knowing that the alleged mastermind behind these crimes is behind bars.

The FBI is continuing to investigate the case to uncover any potential accomplices or motives behind Jabbar’s actions. In the meantime, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

  • FBI issues warning about organized crime groups targeting pro athletes

FBI issues warning about organized crime groups targeting pro athletes

The FBI is warning sports leagues about crime organizations targeting professional athletes following a string of burglaries at the homes of prominent NFL and NBA players.

The athletes’ homes are targeted due to the perception they may contain high-end goods like designer handbags, jewelry, watches and cash, the FBI said in a Liaison Information Report obtained by ABC News.

The NFL and NBA already have issued security alerts to their players after the break-ins, some of which have come when players were away with their teams for road games. The NFL’s alert says homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.”

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is the latest professional athlete whose home has been burglarized. Lara Beth Seager, the star guard’s business manager, told multiple media outlets Saturday there was a break-in at Doncic’s home. Seager said nobody was home at the time of the incident Friday night, and Doncic filed a police report.

Star NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City and Joe Burrow of Cincinnati, along with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, have been victims, as have NBA players Bobby Portis of Milwaukee and Mike Conley Jr. of Minnesota.

Organized theft groups from South America use publicly available information and social media to identify athletes’ habits and track their comings and goings, the FBI report said. The groups use technology allowing them to bypass alarm systems, block wireless internet connections and disable devices, cover security cameras and hide their identities.

Athletes are encouraged to report suspicious activity, keep records of valuables and where they are kept, employ extra security and use caution on social media. The FBI also suggested athletes avoid posting pictures of valuables, the interior of their homes and real-time posts when on vacation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning to professional athletes about the increasing threat of organized crime groups targeting them for illegal activities. These criminal organizations are known to exploit athletes’ wealth, fame, and influence for their own gain.

The FBI has identified several ways in which organized crime groups may target pro athletes, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and fraud schemes. These groups often use the athletes’ status to gain access to high-profile events and influential people, making it easier for them to carry out their illegal activities.

With the rise of social media and the digital age, athletes are more vulnerable than ever to being targeted by organized crime groups. The FBI is urging athletes to be vigilant and cautious about who they associate with and what opportunities they pursue.

Professional athletes are advised to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement and to carefully vet any business partnerships or investment opportunities. By staying informed and taking proactive measures to protect themselves, athletes can help prevent themselves from falling victim to organized crime groups.
