FBI sweeping French Quarter, Bourbon Street for explosive devices

FLETCHER, WALK US THROUGH AGAIN WHAT YOU HEARD, BECAUSE YOU DID HEAR SOME TYPE OF EXPLOSION THERE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. WE DID, TRAVERS, AND I’M GETTING A LITTLE CLOSER RIGHT NOW. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I KNOW. RIGHT. IT WAS MORE THAN LIKELY THEY WERE BLOWING UP WITH WATER CANNONS, SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES AND OUR BACKPACKS, THAT SORT OF THING, UP AND DOWN. AND THAT’S WHAT WE HEARD, TOO. I JUST WANTED SOMEBODY ELSE TO CORROBORATE IT, TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS ISN’T A SITUATION YOU ALL LIVE IN THE QUARTER HERE, OBVIOUSLY, A TRAGEDY UNFOLDED ON BOURBON STREET. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU KNOW ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. SURE. I MEAN, LOOK, YOU LIVE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. YOU SEE CRAZY THINGS. IT’S A WILD AND CRAZY PLACE WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES LIKE THIS. BUT AGAIN, JUST TO KIND OF SET THE SCENE WHAT THE GENTLEMAN JUST SAID AND WHAT WE HEARD HERE AS WELL. A STATE POLICE TROOPER ABOUT 90 MINUTES AGO SAW A SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE. BECAUSE OF THAT, HE NOTIFIED SPECIAL COMMAND. LIKE MIKE SAID, THEY BROUGHT THE SPECIAL COMMAND UNIT OUT HERE. THEY BROUGHT THE BOMB SQUADS OUT HERE. LET ME JUST POINT THIS OVER HERE. NOW. IT LOOKS LIKE NOPD IS NOW RUMMAGING THROUGH TRASH CANS, LOOKING FOR MAYBE MORE SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES. THIS IS A HEAVY NOPD PRESENCE NOW, AND THEY ARE NOW SCOURING THE AREA LOOKING FOR IT. LOOKS LIKE PACKAGES, DEVICES, ANYTHING THAT LOOKS SUSPICIOUS IN THIS AREA WITH THE FLASHLIGHTS COMING DOWN THE STREET BECAUSE THEY DID. AGAIN, WE DON’T WANT TO JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS. IT SOUNDED LIKE THEY DETONATED SOME TYPE OF SMALL DEVICE. WE HEARD FIRE IN THE HOLE AND THEN WE HEARD A SMALL EXPLOSION HERE. IT SOUNDED LIKE A LOUD FIRECRACKER GOING OFF HERE ON THE CORNER OF BOURBON AND ORLEANS. WE’RE ON DAUPHINE IN ORLEANS RIGHT NOW. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE POLICE WITH THE GLOVES, ALL OF THEM WEARING GLOVES, ALL OF THEM DOING AN INVESTIGATION RIGHT NOW. ALL OF THEM SEEING AND LOOKING FOR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS HERE. THIS IS CLEARLY AN INVESTIGATION. SINCE THEY ARE ALL WEARING GLOVES. THEY HAVE THEIR FLASHLIGHTS AND THEY’RE GOING THROUGH THINGS WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB RIGHT NOW. WE’LL STAY HERE BECAUSE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A VERY ACTIVE SITUATION WITH WHAT’S UNFOLDED ON BOURBON STREET IN THE CASUALTY SITUATION AND NOPD OFFICERS COMING AT US RIGHT NOW LOOKING FOR WHAT WE SUSPECT IS MORE SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES AND DEVICES HERE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. SO AGAIN, I’LL LET YOU CONTINUE TO WATCH. IS IS THEY MARCH DOWN DAUPHINE HERE SEARCHING IN EVERY TRASH CAN AND AND LOOKING FOR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS RIGHT NOW. BUT WE DID HEAR A SMALL EXPLOSION. AND THAT IS ON THE HEELS OF THE MASS TRAGEDY THAT UNFOLDED ABOUT 3 A.M. THIS MORNING AND COULD POTENTIALLY BE CONNECTED TO IT. The Federal Bureau of Investigations is sweeping the New Orleans French Quarter after a believed terrorist attack killed 10 people and injured more than 20. It happened around 3:15 a.m. toward the end of New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans and hours before the kickoff of the AllState Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the city’s Caesars Superdome, with thousands expected to be in attendance.Agents responded to what is believed to be “suspicious devices” found in the area, followed by agents screaming “fire in the hole.” Two small explosions were heard at the intersection of Dauphine and Orleans after FBI agents responded to possible explosive devices in the area. It is unclear at this time what the devices were and if they were connected to the attack. Watch live coverage: Nearby hotels were also evacuated as the FBI continues its investigation. Sources say the suspect in the attack has been killed, possibly by a New Orleans police officer.Mayor Latoya Cantrell called the incident a terrorist attack and said she had been in contact with the White House.NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said a man drove a pickup around barricades and down Bourbon Street at a high rate of speed. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” she said. “He was hellbent on creating the carnage that he did.”Additionally, two officers were shot, she said. Conditions of those officers were not immediately available.The NOPD is asking everyone to avoid the eight blocks surrounding Bourbon Street until further notice. Related coverage:
