WICHITA, Kansas — Figure skaters often say they are competing only against themselves.
That certainly has become the case for Ilia Malinin at the Prevagen U.S. Championships.
The reigning world champion is simply in a league by himself on the national level.
He showed that again in Saturday’s short program, winning by 19.14 points, with Andrew Torgashev second and Jimmy Ma third, 3.03 points behind Torgashev. It is a record margin for the men’s short program winner at nationals.
And Malinin also topped himself, with a score (114.08) that is more than three points higher than his previous short program best at nationals.
“I was pretty surprised about the score,” Malinin said. “I thought that performance might get 110, 109.”
Malinin makes the extraordinary look easy to a degree so that even he can underestimate its impact on others, including judges.
“You always have to see behind the scenes and how everything works at practices,” he said. “It’s not always going to be so easy looking.”
And it is almost disappointing when he does merely a quadruple flip and a quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination, as he did in this short program, opting to eschew his trademark quad Axel for a triple.
“I think there is the pressure of trying to do the quad Axel at every competition, but I always trust myself and know what’s best for me and my body,” Malinin said.
That translates to, “Why take unnecessary risk when you simply are so much better than anyone else in the field?” That means Malinin’s next barrier-breaking feat, whether a quintuple jump or quad-quad combination, will have to wait, even if fans would like it sooner.
“I think that now that I have done the quad Axel, they want to see something more, bigger and better,” he said. “For me, since the (2026) Olympics are around the corner, I just want to play it safe for myself.
“But after the Olympics, then I’ll go ham.”
(For those unfamiliar with the slang Gen Z expression, “going ham” means letting it all hang out.)

Ma, in his 11th senior nationals at age 29, has the perspective of having skated against 2022 Olympic champion Nathan Chen during his six years of national dominance and now seeing Malinin assert his supremacy as he heads for a third straight title. The free skate final is Sunday (4 p.m. ET, NBC and Peacock).
“I don’t even think of it as a competition anymore because that’s not something I can achieve,” Ma said. “It’s an honor just to be able to skate and be friends with two people who can be considered GOATs in their own way. They inspire me to push my old body to its limits.”
Malinin, who turned 20 in December, is the first to land a quad Axel in competition, first to land six quadruple jumps in a free skate, first to try all six types of quad in a free skate. He is sui generis, which creates a singular set of expectations.
“It’s a little bit scary that I kind of have to push myself and see where I can take the sport as (compared to) a few years ago, where I’d be following all these other skaters — Nathan Chen, Yuzuru Hanyu, Shoma Uno,” Malinin said on a recent media call.
Because his array of quads gives Malinin a sizeable advantage in base value scores, especially in a free skate, it seems that error-free performances like Saturday’s make him unbeatable. He has won seven straight competitions.
“I haven’t really thought about that,” Malinin said. “I still feel I am not at the best I can be. I have miles ahead.”
Floppy-haired, baby-faced and willowy, quick to smile and play with an audience, unimposing physically, Malinin’s athletic flights of fancy seem like magic. He can gather to full speed instantly, and the tightness of his rotation on jumps makes it look as if his body is a single, linear element.
He has realized that he can’t be what others might prefer — a skater with balletic skills. He chooses contemporary music and movements that reflect power more than delicacy.
“You could call it tricks or trying to defy gravity or create this whole new form of entertainment for people watching the sport,” he said.
He has added eye-catching fillips like the “raspberry twist,” a butterfly jump with a twist that involves several changes of edge. Saturday, Malinin’s execution of it was a sweet delight, with a takeoff so powerful he seemed to go airborne.
That was one reason why Malinin felt as if he had performed to “my maximum capability.” After all, he is about taking the sport to new heights.

Ilia Malinin plans to do a backflip at Skate America after figure skating officials made it legal for the first time in nearly 50 years.
Ilia Malinin, the rising star in the figure skating world, has once again left audiences and fellow skaters in awe with his latest performance. Known for his technical precision and artistic flair, Malinin has continually pushed the boundaries of what is possible on the ice.
His latest routine showcased a combination of breathtaking jumps, seamless spins, and intricate footwork that had spectators on the edge of their seats. With each graceful movement, Malinin seemed to defy gravity and captivate the audience with his mesmerizing performance.
As the figure skating world eagerly awaits his next barrier-breaking feat, it is clear that Malinin is a force to be reckoned with. His dedication to his craft and unparalleled skill have solidified his place as one of the top skaters in the world.
With each performance, Malinin continues to raise the bar for what is possible in figure skating, leaving fans and fellow competitors alike in awe of his talent. We can only imagine what incredible feats he will achieve next as he continues to push the boundaries of the sport.

Sacramento Kings interim head coach Doug Christie is in an unenvious position. Many are justifiably outraged over how the Kings treated Mike Brown, and Christie has thus found himself in the crossfire for simply accepting the interim tag.
The Kings have taken on a new life under Christie, however, with one achievement in specific steadily emerging as his greatest feat: Convincing DeMar DeRozan to embrace the three-point shot.
DeRozan is one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. He boasts a career average of 21.9 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting from the field, and has amassed a total of 24,355 points. He’s on pace to eclipse 25,000 by the end of the 2024-25 regular season.
Depending on if Stephen Curry achieves the same, and he likely will, DeRozan will become either the 26th or 27th player in NBA history to reach 25,000 career points scored.
Long regarded as the last of a dying breed, DeRozan has reached that scoring mark while placing a minimal emphasis on three-point shooting. His bread and butter has been his midrange game, with a similar proficiency as a finisher at and above the rim.
Since Christie took over as interim head coach, however, DeRozan has finally embraced the three-point shot—and both he and the Kings have been unstoppable because of it.
DeMar DeRozan is finally shooting threes—and he’s on fire
Between his first 34 appearances in 2024-25, DeRozan was averaging 20.6 points, 0.6 three-point field goals made, and 2.1 threes attempted on .489/.300/.859 shooting. It was all in line with his career averages of 21.9 points, 0.5 conversions, and 1.6 attempts on .469/.298/.842 shooting.
Over the past seven games, however, DeRozan has attempted 4.4 three-point field goals per game, with Christie emphasizing an overlooked strength.
DeRozan is shooting 36.8 percent on catch-and-shoot threes in 2024-25. Christie has made that a key point of emphasis in recent weeks, with DeRozan’s average increasing from 1.9 attempts in catch-and-shoot scenarios to 3.3.
That’s opened the door for DeRozan to thrive as an individual, rediscover his All-Star form, and help the Kings produce their best stretch of the season.
Sacramento has won six of its past seven games, including encounters with the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, and Memphis Grizzlies. During that time, DeRozan has returned to the level that made him a six-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selectee—with a new twist.
The 35-year-old is averaging 25.3 points, 4.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.7 three-point field goals made per game during that time, posting a slash line of .455/.387/.892.
DeRozan’s transformation may be the greatest credit to what Christie has accomplished early in his Kings tenure. DeRozan was Sacramento’s marquee acquisition during the 2024 offseason, but the fit was debatable both on paper and on the court.
By embracing DeRozan’s underutilized strength as a catch-and-shoot specialist in three-point settings, Christie has opened up the floor and shown the Kings what’s possible with this roster.
Doug Christie’s greatest feat as a coach is his ability to crack the code on player development in a way that no other coach has been able to. With his unique blend of experience as a former professional basketball player and his innovative coaching techniques, Christie has been able to unlock the potential of his players in a way that is truly remarkable.
One of the secrets to Christie’s success is his emphasis on individualized player development. He takes the time to understand each player’s strengths and weaknesses, and tailors his coaching approach to help them maximize their potential. This personalized approach has led to impressive improvements in his players’ skills and performance on the court.
In addition to his focus on player development, Christie is also known for his innovative coaching strategies. He is constantly thinking outside the box and coming up with new ways to challenge his players and keep them engaged. Whether it’s introducing new drills, implementing cutting-edge technology, or using unconventional teaching methods, Christie is always looking for ways to push his players to new heights.
Overall, Doug Christie’s ability to crack the code on player development sets him apart as a coach. His dedication to understanding his players and his willingness to think outside the box have led to incredible results on the court. As he continues to push the boundaries of coaching excellence, there’s no telling what new feats he will accomplish in the future.
At both the individual and team levels, the Kansas City Chiefs seem to be making more and more history by the week. Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans was no different, as players and the franchise itself climbed up the leaderboards thanks to a 23-14 victory.
No accomplishment was more impressive than that of head coach Andy Reid, though. With Kansas City’s triumph in the divisional round, Reid joined an exclusive club of head coaches to amass 300 career wins. His 273 regular-season wins are now complemented by 27 in the postseason, adding to one of football’s best resumes ever.
In typical Reid fashion, he didn’t want to take too much credit for stacking up another good outcome. Instead, he praised his team for fighting through an up-and-down game against a tough opponent.
“Yeah, I’m proud of them for what they’ve done,” Reid said. “This isn’t an easy thing, that’s a good football team. DeMeco (Ryans) has done a phenomenal job with that team. I had him as a player, now I get to see him as a coach and he’s doing great things as a coach, so [I have] a ton of respect for him and what he’s done. That’s a good football team. Phenomenal defense that they’ve got. I’m proud of our guys for how they handled it. We knocked a little bit of the rust off, everybody stayed positive and with each other and that whole bit, and here we sit with a championship game. I mean, we’re humbled to be in that position and we appreciate that we’re right here at Arrowhead.”
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, on the other hand, wasn’t nearly as reserved. The two-time NFL MVP explained what separates Reid from most leaders, as well as why he’ll go down as perhaps the consummate players’ coach.
“He’s just a great person,” Mahomes said. “More than a great coach, he’s just a great person, and guys want to play for a guy like that. He’s been so instrumental in making me who I am. I owe him a lot – pretty much all – of my success. I told him we need to get to 302, though, for this year and then we worry about next year.”
Now multiple decades into his career as a head coach, Reid has experienced extreme success with both the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. But after 130 regular-season wins and 10 playoff ones in the NFC, it’s his run in the AFC that stands out. Prior to Mahomes landing in Kansas City, Reid led the organization to several postseason appearances and helped turn around one of the NFL’s struggling teams. With an all-time great signal-caller now at his disposal, all Reid has known since the 2018 campaign is either a high-drama conference title game, a Super Bowl appearance or a championship win.
That aforementioned group of head coaches with 300-plus overall wins has nothing but household names. Three non-Reid ones, to be exact: Don Shula, George Halas and Bill Belichick, all of whom are either in the Hall of Fame or will one day be there. Reid’s trajectory is undoubtedly headed for the same exact spot, whether he wants to embrace that status or not.
“Yeah, a lot of people go into that, so, y’know, it’s not… I joked [with] the guys, you get a couple more, you might be able to equal my weight,” Reid said with a chuckle.
Unfortunately for Reid, not even his best wisecrack can brush aside his greatness as the Chiefs host another AFC championship game.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to social media to praise head coach Andy Reid after the team’s recent win against the Denver Broncos marked Reid’s 300th career coaching victory. Mahomes shared a heartfelt message, calling Reid a “legend” and thanking him for his leadership and guidance.
In response to Mahomes’ kind words, Reid graciously brushed off the impressive milestone, instead choosing to focus on the team’s success as a whole. “It’s not about me, it’s about the team,” Reid said in a post-game press conference. “We have a great group of players and coaches who work hard every day to achieve our goals. I couldn’t have reached this milestone without their dedication and commitment.”
Reid’s humility and team-first mentality have endeared him to players and fans alike, and his ability to deflect praise and remain focused on the task at hand has been a key factor in his coaching success. As the Chiefs continue their quest for a Super Bowl title, Reid’s leadership and unwavering dedication to his team will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their success.
In the modern age of streaming, very few shows last longer than a season or two. Netflix has developed perhaps the worst cancellation reputation of all streaming services. While the company commissions and produces a ton of original content every year, very little of it lasts the many years that shows often got in the old days of traditional TV. Of course, there are exceptions, and with the release of “Castlevania: Nocturne” season 2, there’s a big one.
Yes, this is only the second season of “Nocturne,” but if you count it as an extension of the original “Castlevania” series, it’s season 6. Most sequel series are their own distinct entities, but in the case of the “Castlevania” team, many core members made the transition between the two shows. Original creator, showrunner, and writer Warren Ellis was dropped from the franchise in between the shows after allegations of misconduct, and was replaced by a team including writers Zodwa Nyoni and Temi Oh and new “Nocturne” showrunner Clive Bradley. However, the directors and animators at Powerhouse Animation Studios led by Adam and Samuel Deats, composer Trevor Morris, and producers Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Adi Shankar have all been on board since the very beginning, giving both shows plenty of cohesion beyond their shared universe.
What’s even more impressive than an animated video game adaptation getting six seasons on Netflix is that every single “Castlevania” season is spectacular. With “Nocturne” season 2 delivering yet another standout set of episodes, the show has entered truly rare company.
Castlevania has become one of Netflix’s greatest shows ever
Netflix
It’s hard to make a list of shows that ran for at least six seasons and never dipped in quality. “Game of Thrones” season 6 was controversial, all-timers like “The Wire” and “Breaking Bad” only ran for five seasons each, and many other popular, high-genre shows like “Supernatural,” “Doctor Who,” or “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” had major dips in quality.
Some viewers might argue that “Castlevania” dropped off after season 2, as season 3 of the original show is much slower-paced. I’d argue, though, that season 3 is some of the franchise’s strongest material, as it gives all the characters time to breathe, develop, and explore core themes like faith, grief, love, and loneliness. “Nocturne” season 1 changed things up again by giving the show a slightly younger ensemble of characters, but the core of what’s always made “Castlevania” great remained intact.
Yes, refreshing the story with a new time period and cast arguably helps things stay interesting, but it’s not any easier to totally change the story of a show than it is to keep one arc going for five or six seasons. If anything, “Nocturne” was a huge risk when it premiered, as none of the characters fans had come to love from the preceding series were present in it at all.
The most apt comparison might be “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “The Legend of Korra.” While “Castlevania” is a much more brutal and adult-oriented show, the “Avatar” franchise has a similar animated style, level of supernatural lore, and a close connection between the original and sequel series. In both cases, a majority of the creative team from the first show moved over to the second, changing the tone and structure but keeping the important things consistent.
Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 is one of the best yet
Netflix
Ranking every season of “Castlevania” is a challenge because they’re all great but in different ways. That said, “Nocturne” season 2 is near the top of that list. It doesn’t surpass season 2 of the original series in my opinion, but it has a similar structure, building tension, and explosive climax.
The last two episodes of this season contain some of the best action “Castlevania” has ever seen. Alucard’s Paris-spanning duel with Drolta and the multi-stage team-up against Erzsebet are true feats of animation, no less impressive than Trevor’s battle against death in “Castlevania” season 4 or the fight against Dracula in season 2. And beyond that, the character work — something that “Castlevania” has always excelled at — continues to be incredibly strong. Everyone, even the villains and antiheroes, gets juicy material here. Maria grapples with a devastating blend of grief and rage that almost destroys her. Olrox grapples with his own morality, which is at times both enriched by and at odds with his selfishness.
We don’t know yet if Netflix will renew “Castlevania” for another season, but at this point, it’s an eight-year-old institution, and the streamer wouldn’t be the same without it. The video games eventually surpass the present day and enter the near future, so there’s tons of material available for adaptation if “Nocturne” were to end and be succeeded by a third show with a new name. Personally, I hope that “Castlevania” runs for another six seasons, because after it being this good for this long, I just want to see how far it can go.
Nocturne Season 2 Pulls Off A Rare Feat For Netflix
Netflix has become known for its vast library of original content, but not every show is able to maintain the same level of quality and success over multiple seasons. However, Nocturne Season 2 has managed to do just that, pulling off a rare feat for the streaming giant.
The supernatural thriller series, which follows a group of college students who discover dark secrets about their school and themselves, has captivated audiences with its gripping storyline, complex characters, and eerie atmosphere. And with its second season, Nocturne has managed to not only maintain the same level of tension and intrigue as the first season but also elevate the story to new heights.
One of the reasons Nocturne Season 2 has been so successful is its ability to expand on the mythology of the show while still keeping viewers guessing. The writers have expertly woven in new twists and turns, deepening the mystery surrounding the characters and their supernatural abilities. This has kept fans engaged and eager to see what will happen next.
Additionally, the performances from the cast have continued to impress, with standout performances from lead actors and supporting characters alike. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, adding to the overall tension and drama of the show.
Overall, Nocturne Season 2 has proven that it is possible for a Netflix original series to not only maintain its quality but also improve upon it in subsequent seasons. With its gripping storyline, strong performances, and eerie atmosphere, Nocturne is a must-watch for fans of supernatural thrillers.

Teen prodigy Jakub Mensik has caused a massive upset, defeating world No.6 Casper Ruud in the second round of the Australian Open.
Playing on Margaret Court Arena, Mensik was clinical with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The 19-year-old’s triumph came on the same court that Joao Fonseca defeated Andrey Rublev the night before as two top-10 males stars were sent packing.
As Mensik pushed his way to a 6-1 win in the third set, former Australian tennis player John Fitzgerald delivered high praise to the Czech youngster.
“At times we all get ahead of ourselves but this kid to me looks like he could be a future grand slam champion. He’s a serious player,” he said on Nine’s coverage.

With the score sitting at 3-3 in the fourth set, Mensik made his move by breaking the serve of Ruud to lead 4-3. He then stayed composed to win the set 6-4.
Mensik raised both hands in the air after the win as the crowd roared in appreciation.
“He’s here to stay … what a game he has, it’s a frightening game,” Fitzgerald said.
“I just love seeing young players play, it warms my heart … it’s just enlightening for me to see them come.”

The result makes it the first time since 2006 that two teenage players have beaten top 10 players at a major. Those two back then were Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
Mensik’s win against Ruud also makes it his fifth win against top 10 players.
The world No.48 was modest when revealing his secret behind such success.
“I’m just happy I have the opportunity to play against these players and am trying to enjoy every moment on the court. When I’m enjoying myself on the court, that’s the key and when I’m playing my best tennis,” Mensik said post-match.
In a stunning upset at the Australian Open 2025, rising star Jakub Mensik shocked the tennis world by defeating world number 5 Casper Ruud on Margaret Court Arena. The young Czech player showed incredible poise and skill as he took down the higher-ranked opponent in a thrilling match that had fans on the edge of their seats.
But Mensik wasn’t the only teenager making waves at this year’s tournament. In a remarkable feat, two other young players managed to defeat top 10 stars, echoing the historic moment when Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray burst onto the scene and took down established players early in their careers.
The Australian Open 2025 has proven to be a showcase of the next generation of tennis talent, with these young players proving that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level. As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on Mensik and his fellow teenage stars as they look to continue their impressive run and make a name for themselves on the international stage.

The 2022-23 Duke basketball squad, Jon Scheyer’s first as head coach, tied the 1970-71 Blue Devils for the third highest free throw percentage in program history at 76.6 percent. This year’s group isn’t quite on track to match that. But counting the effort in Tuesday night’s 88-65 home win over Virginia Tech, it seems within reach.
No. 4-ranked Duke’s 15-for-15 clip against the Hokies is the program’s highest number of makes without a miss since the 1977-78 Blue Devils finished 24-for-24 in a home win over Davidson. Credit belongs to Cooper Flagg (4-for-4), Tyrese Proctor (4-for-4), Kon Knueppel (3-for-3), Caleb Foster (2-for-2), and Mason Gillis (2-for-2).
And it was only the third time a Duke team has been perfect at the foul line with at least 15 attempts in a contest.
Oddly enough, the program record of 29-for-29 came at home against the Hokies in December 1966. Even stranger, including the 10-for-10 at Virginia Tech in December 2019, three of the five times that a Duke basketball team has finished 10-for-10 or better have been against the Hokies in December.
Scheyer’s third batch of Blue Devils (11-2, 3-0 ACC) is now shooting 75.1 percent at the line.
Six Duke basketball players have attempted at least 20 free throws this season. Five of them are shooting 75 percent or better.
Knueppel leads the way at 95.8 percent, as he’s missed only one of his 24 attempts. Of course, it’s still early, but the freshman guard/forward is on pace to break the Blue Devil season record of 95.3 percent that legendary Duke basketball sharpshooter JJ Redick posted in 2003-04.
In their latest victory, Duke Basketball achieved a feat that may have gone unnoticed by many fans. While the focus tends to be on the star players and highlight-reel plays, one aspect of their game that often goes overlooked is their exceptional team defense.
In their most recent game, Duke held their opponent to just 60 points, well below their season average. This defensive effort was a key factor in their victory and showcased the team’s ability to lock down on the defensive end when it matters most.
While Duke is known for their high-flying offense and talented scorers, it is their commitment to defense that sets them apart from other teams. Their ability to shut down opponents and make key stops in crunch time is a testament to their dedication and hard work on the defensive end.
As Duke continues their march towards the postseason, their strong team defense will be a crucial factor in their success. While it may not always make the highlight reel, their defensive prowess should not be overlooked as they strive for greatness on the basketball court.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins, who is joint-fifth with Glenn McGrath in that list with 914 rating points, is another one to gain in the latest rankings update after helping win the fourth match of their ICC World Test Championship series against India in Melbourne.
He also secured a third place in the Test all-rounder rankings after he notched up 90 vital runs across two innings during Australia’s 184-run win in the fourth Test.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s 82-run first-innings knock in the Boxing Day Test saw him jump a spot to a career-best fourth with 854 rating points, while Nitish Kumar Reddy’s maiden Test century leapfrogged him 20 places to 53rd in the Test batting rankings.
