  • Former PlayStation Boss Names One Feature the PS6 Should Not Exclude

    Summary

    • Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden believes that the PS6 must include an optical disc drive.
    • While Sony has already started offering discless consoles during the PS5 generation, an all-digital PS6 would alienate too many existing users, Layden believes.
    • The industry veteran suspects the rumored standalone PlayStation handheld will also have to support cartridges or some other form of physical media for much the same reasons, assuming that device ever makes it to the market.

Shawn Layden, the former Chairman, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, believes that the PlayStation 6 should include a physical disc drive at all costs. The industry veteran said as much during a recent interview, which saw him explain why he doesn’t believe Sony can pull off an all-digital PlayStation console generation just yet.

The PS5 Digital Edition was Sony’s first-ever home console that launched without an optical disc drive. Since then, the company has also introduced the PS5 Pro and a discless variant of the PS5 Slim, both of which can be equipped with a separately purchased Blu-ray drive. In light of these product releases, some fans and industry watchers alike have been speculating that Sony might be gearing up for an all-digital console generation sooner rather than later.

Rumor: PS6 Leak May Hint at Console’s Release Window

A well-known hardware leaker provides some new information that may hint at the potential release window of Sony’s PlayStation 6.

Former SIE Worldwide Studios CEO Shawn Layden disagrees with this forecast, having said as much during a recent interview with YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz. “I don’t think Sony can get away with [an all-digital PS6] now,” the industry veteran said. Elaborating on this notion, Layden noted that Sony’s home consoles continue to see plenty of use in environments with slow internet speeds or no connectivity whatsoever, whether due to technical or security reasons. From rural players to users on military bases, there are still many consumers who would be unable to consistently enjoy modern PlayStation games if Sony stopped supporting physical media, the former PlayStation boss said.

A Discless PS6 Lineup Would Alienate Many PlayStation Users

Given this state of affairs, a fully discless PS6 lineup would alienate a significant portion of PlayStation users, which Layden cites as the main reason why Sony likely can’t pull off an all-digital home console generation just yet. Although the former SIE executive didn’t speculate beyond the tenth console generation, some other market watchers already did. E.g., Circana analyst Mat Piscatella previously predicted that the PS7 will be Sony’s first all-digital console.

Rumored PlayStation Handheld Will Likely Have to Support Physical Media As Well

Elsewhere during the interview, Layden discussed the challenges of an all-digital console generation through the prism of recent reports about Sony developing a new standalone PlayStation handheld. While the portable form factor would rule out support for Blu-ray discs, that doesn’t mean Sony could make it entirely digital either—for the same reasons that a discless PS6 would be problematic, Layden explained. As a result, he expects Sony’s rumored handheld to feature a physical media option, possibly using Switch-like cartridges, assuming the device ever materializes. Layden holds similar expectations for the Xbox handheld, which Microsoft recently confirmed is in the prototyping stage but has yet to be approved for commercialization.

I don’t think Sony can get away with [an all-digital PS6] now.

Several Sony executives have previously said that the PS5 had entered the latter half of its life cycle as of early 2024. In light of those remarks and the company’s track record with console release timings, the PS6 is expected to hit the market in either late 2027 or Q4 2028.

Former PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan recently spoke out about one feature that he believes the upcoming PS6 should not exclude: backwards compatibility.

In an interview with IGN, Ryan emphasized the importance of backwards compatibility in gaming consoles, stating that it allows gamers to access and play their favorite titles from previous generations. He pointed out that the PS5’s backwards compatibility feature has been well-received by fans, and he believes that this should be a key feature in future PlayStation consoles as well.

Ryan’s comments come as rumors swirl about the upcoming PS6, with many speculating about what new features and improvements it will bring. While details about the PS6 are still scarce, Ryan’s endorsement of backwards compatibility suggests that this feature will likely be a priority for Sony in the development of their next console.

As fans eagerly await more news about the PS6, it seems that they can at least rest assured that one beloved feature will not be left behind.

  • Live updates: Grammys to feature Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and more top artists

It’s almost showtime in Los Angeles, and artists are starting to file into Crypto.com Arena for the Grammys, hoping to hear their name called soon for an award.

But some of the categories sound like they could be similar, like record of the year and song of the year, for instance.

If you’re just tuning in and you’re a bit confused, here’s what to know:

Record of the year recognizes the team behind producing a song, including the artist, producers and engineers, according to the Recording Academy behind the awards.

Song of the year, however, is more about recognizing the person who wrote the new material of the song, according to the Grammys. Song of the year is focused on the song composition, rather than the technical creation of the track (as in record of the year).

But, don’t confuse the terms “album” and “record” — they are not used interchangeably in the Grammys as they might be in casual conversation between music lovers.

According to the guidelines, to qualify for album of the year, “recordings must contain at least five different tracks and a total playing time of 15 minutes or a total playing time of at least 30 minutes with no minimum track requirement,” the Grammys said.

The category is judged on the “quality and artistry” of the tracks on an album as a whole, it said, rather than an individual song — as in the record of the year and song of the year categories.

Exciting news for music fans everywhere! The Grammys are just around the corner and the lineup is stacked with some of the biggest names in the industry. From Beyoncé to Taylor Swift to Billie Eilish and more, this year’s awards show is sure to be one for the books.

  • Lewis-Skelly: AS Levels and revising with Nwaneri! | Feature | News

Myles was just 17 when he made his first-team debut, coming on for the closing stages of our intense encounter away to Manchester City, when we were holding on with 10 men. No easy introduction into life at the top level for the teenager then, but he was anything but overawed.

“I just felt ready,” he says. “I’d been waiting for that moment for a long time, so when it came I wasn’t taken by surprise. I was prepared to go on. I was raring to go.
I had to be extra careful though, because I’d already been booked before I even got on!

“But I’ve really enjoyed being involved with the team. This is what, as a boy, I really wanted to achieve – playing first-team football, getting minutes for the first team. Now the next step is, can I keep doing it? Can I keep maintaining my level? Can I keep reaching new heights? And that’s what I’m trying to do at the moment.

“It’s been special to share it with Ethan [Nwaneri] as well because we’ve been so close growing up,” he adds. “We were talking about this for years, so it’s like we’ve talked it into existence!

“As kids together we knew we both had what it takes, so we’ve been pushing each other ever since to reach what we want to reach. But there is still a long way to go on that.”

Ethan and Myles have shared their football journey together so far – being part of the same intake at Hale End, and of course being in the same school year. And the two combined when it was time to take their GCSEs in 2023.

“We were actually abroad for the GCSEs, with England at the Euros at the time,” he says. “It was the Under-17 Championships in Hungary, so I was revising every night in the team hotel. I was up at stupid times in the morning as well. It was crazy.

“We did the exams around the games, so all of our devices were taken from us. It’s all a bit of a blur, because exams are stressful anyway, so with the football as well it was a lot to juggle. But I was determined to do well because I’d put the work in for the years so I didn’t want to ruin it at the end. I was with Ethan as well, so it was kind of fun revising together. It’s a good memory to have really.”

The studying has continued since then. Myles is currently studying for AS Levels in both Spanish and business studies. So why did he choose those two subjects?

“Well Spanish, because I really like learning languages, and I particularly like Spanish. I want to be fluent in other languages – I feel that’s important. Also I feel if I can be fluent in one language it will be easier to pick up others too. I try to practice around the Spanish speakers in the dressing room – they correct me a lot!

“My Spanish teacher, Marta, comes to the training ground so it’s great to work around my training and playing schedule. She taught me at school as well, so I’ve known her a long time. I had four lessons a week last year, but now with the football schedule it’s about two or three. She sets me a lot of homework to make up for it!

“And as for business studies, I think it’s a necessity to have that knowledge when you are growing up, to know about business structures and how everything works.”

So as a lifelong learner, is Myles – who only turned 18 in September – already thinking about his post-playing career?

“No not really, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ve got a lot of interests, but as of right now I’m not really thinking about it. I would like to do some travelling and be with my family. But further than that, I don’t know – I’ll have to get back to you on that!”

Are you a student preparing for your AS Levels and feeling overwhelmed with the amount of content you need to revise? Look no further, because Lewis-Skelly has got you covered with their new study buddy, Nwaneri!

In a recent feature, Lewis-Skelly shared their top tips for revising effectively for AS Levels, including creating a study schedule, using flashcards, and practicing past papers. But what sets them apart is their unique approach to studying with Nwaneri, a virtual assistant designed to help students stay organized and on track with their revision.

Nwaneri can help you set reminders for study sessions, keep track of your progress, and provide personalized feedback on your work. With Nwaneri by your side, you can feel confident that you are making the most of your study time and preparing effectively for your exams.

AXS, a leading ticketing platform, has just announced the launch of a new biometric authentication feature for its mobile ticketing app. This new feature allows users to securely access their tickets using facial recognition or fingerprint scanning.

With the rise of mobile ticketing, security and convenience have become top priorities for users. By integrating biometric authentication, AXS is taking a step towards enhancing the overall ticketing experience for its customers.

This new feature not only adds an extra layer of security to the app but also streamlines the ticketing process, making it easier and faster for users to access their tickets on the go.

In an age where data privacy and security are of utmost importance, AXS’ implementation of biometric authentication sets a new standard for mobile ticketing platforms. • AEG’s Ticketing Platform to Feature Fingerprint and Facial Recognition

AXS, AEG’s ticketing and event access platform, is launching a new global biometric authentication feature for its mobile app across all smart phone devices.

The technology marks the first time a ticketing smart phone app utilizes biometric security features, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, to provide users with a secure way to access their accounts and tickets. Studies have shown that biometric-based security protocols tend to be far more secure than password-based systems.

With on-device biometric authentication, AXS users can log in to their accounts and access their tickets using their unique fingerprint or facial recognition. The technology can also reduce unauthorized ticket resale activity by making it difficult sell ticketing accounts on sites like Stubhub. In recent years, secondary sellers have found ways to defeat anti-ticket scalping technology through account trading — the new technology eliminates the need to remember passwords or access tickets while entering an event.

“We are thrilled to introduce biometric authentication to our mobile app,” said Justin Burleigh, chief product officer at AXS. “This feature not only enhances security for our users but also streamlines the ticketing process, allowing fans to focus on enjoying their live event journey.”

In addition to improved security, on-device biometric authentication will also provide a simplified account recovery process for AXS users who can’t recall their passwords.

The new on device biometric authentication feature is now available to all AXS users through the latest version of the AXS mobile app.

AEG, one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment presenters, has announced a groundbreaking new feature for its ticketing platform. In an effort to enhance security and streamline the ticketing process, AEG will be implementing fingerprint and facial recognition technology for event entry.

This innovative system will allow ticket holders to simply scan their fingerprint or have their face scanned upon entry, eliminating the need for physical tickets or lengthy verification processes. Not only will this make the entry process quicker and more convenient for attendees, but it will also enhance security measures, ensuring that only authorized ticket holders are granted access to events.

AEG’s decision to incorporate fingerprint and facial recognition technology into their ticketing platform is a testament to their commitment to providing a safe and seamless experience for their customers. With this new feature, attendees can rest assured that their information is secure and their entry into events will be hassle-free.

Stay tuned for more updates on AEG’s exciting new ticketing platform and the implementation of fingerprint and facial recognition technology. This is just the beginning of a new era in event ticketing, and AEG is leading the way towards a more secure and efficient future for live entertainment.

  • Copilot’s powerful new ‘Think Deeper’ feature is free for all users – how it works

    Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET

In the fall, Microsoft unveiled its latest Copilot AI features and placed them in Copilot Labs, Microsoft’s home for experimental features only available to Copilot Pro subscribers. Now, one of the standout features is moving out of Copilot Labs and into Copilot so all users can access it for free.

    Available to all Copilot users

On Wednesday, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman shared via an X post that the Think Deeper feature was made available for all Copilot users at no additional cost. The feature leverages OpenAI’s O1 reasoning model to deliver higher-quality responses to complex prompts.

The o1 model was trained to “think before it speaks,” and as a result, takes a bit longer to process your query — around 30 seconds, according to Microsoft. This is especially useful for STEM-related tasks such as coding, analysis, and advanced math problems. Other use cases include in-depth advice and planning.

    Microsoft Think Deeper

    Screenshot by Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET

OpenAI has kept its advanced reasoning model from free users, with the o1 model only available for paid subscribers, including ChatGPT Pro, Team, Edu, and Enterprise users. As a result, being able to access it for free in Copilot is a big opportunity for people who want to try it without shelling out the money.

Also: Microsoft’s new Copilot+ Surface devices are built for business with Intel inside

The only caveat is that it doesn’t have access to the internet, but Suleyman said in a comment on the X post that Microsoft is “working on it.”

    How to access Think Deeper

To access the feature, sign into Copilot using your Microsoft account. Once you do, next to the text box, you will see the “Think Deeper” button, which you can click to activate the model when answering your prompt. As a free user at the time of writing this article, I already had access to the feature.

Also: Microsoft’s latest optional patch is a bug-fix bonanza for Windows 11 24H2

If you need help getting started, upon clicking “Think Deeper,” you will be given sample prompts, as seen in the screenshot above. Beyond this feature, Suleyman shared that Microsoft has so much more in the pipeline. After trailing behind OpenAI for a bit, Microsoft may be gearing up to reclaim its throne.

Copilot, the popular AI-powered code completion tool, has just released a powerful new feature called ‘Think Deeper’ that is now available for all users for free. This innovative feature helps developers improve their coding skills by providing suggestions and insights on how to approach complex problems in a more strategic way.

Here’s how the ‘Think Deeper’ feature works:

    1. Contextual Analysis: Copilot analyzes the code context and provides suggestions on how to optimize or refactor the code for better performance and efficiency.

    2. Problem Solving Strategies: When faced with a challenging coding problem, Copilot offers different approaches and strategies to tackle the problem effectively.

    3. Code Patterns: Copilot identifies common code patterns and suggests ways to simplify and streamline the code for better readability and maintainability.

    4. Code Review Recommendations: In addition to providing suggestions during coding, Copilot also offers recommendations for code reviews to ensure the code meets best practices and standards.

Overall, the ‘Think Deeper’ feature is a valuable tool for developers looking to enhance their coding skills and improve their problem-solving abilities. With Copilot’s powerful new feature now available for free to all users, developers can take their coding to the next level and write cleaner, more efficient code.

  • Los Angeles benefit concert to feature Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo

A star-studded line-up is set to take over two venues in Los Angeles on Thursday for a benefit concert to help the area recover from two of the largest fires in its history.

More than 20 artists from various genres are on the line-up for the FireAid benefit show, which is happening simultaneously at two large venues in the city.

Among those set to preform are Sting, P!nk, Lil Baby, Rod Stewart, Lady Gaga and Earth Wind & Fire. The lineup also includes multiple acts who were born in the LA area, including Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt.

Proceeds from the concert and donations during the show will go toward rebuilding communities and preventing future fires in the region.

About 30 people died and more than 10,000 homes and businesses were destroyed in the fast-spreading, destructive fires that broke out in early January.

Getty Images An aerial image shows the complete devastation to a community in Los Angeles after fires levelled a neighbourhood. Blocks and blocks of homes are now scattered debris. The mountains, where the blaze is reported to have started, stand in the distance. Getty Images

    Who is performing at FireAid?

The shows are taking place at the Kia Forum and Intuit Dome, two large arenas about a mile apart, on Thursday evening. The shows will start about an hour and half apart and reportedly include two to four songs from each artist.

At Intuit Dome, those preforming include: Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, Jelly Roll, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lil Baby, Olivia Rodrigo, Peso Pluma, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tate McRae and Earth, Wind & Fire.

At the Kia Forum, those preforming include: Alanis Morissette, Anderson .Paak, Dawes, Graham Nash, Green Day, John Fogerty, Joni Mitchell, No Doubt, Pink, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stephen Stills, Stevie Nicks, the Black Crowes, and John Mayer.

Dave Matthews was also supposed to perform at the second show, but pulled out on Wednesday night, due to a “critical illness in the family”.

Organisers say performances will be staggered, and shown on large screens at both arenas so there’s no down time between acts.

The shows are also expected to feature special guests and have an emphasis on those who have been impacted by the fires and the first responders who helped douse the infernos.

Can I watch the show at home?

Yes. Organisers say it will be streamed for free on platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, Hulu, Facebook, Instagram, Max, Netflix, Tudum, Paramount+, Peacock, NBC News Now, YouTube and KTLA.

The concert will also be shown in select AMC and Regal theatres across the US.

The music kicks off at 18:00 in LA (21:00 in New York, 02:00 Friday in the UK).

How can you help LA fire victims?

Viewers will be able to donate money to relief efforts during the show, either by text message or by visiting FireAidLA.org.

Donations will be overseen by the Annenberg Foundation, focusing on both short-term relief efforts and long-term fire prevention projects.

Additionally, Connie and Steve Ballmer – who own the LA Clippers basketball team, as well as the Intuit Dome and Forum – will match all donations made during the broadcast.

The Palisades and Eaton fires became the largest fires ever seen in the LA area earlier this month. Both erupted on 7 January as the region saw a strong wind event, making the small blazes in brushy, mountainous areas hard to contain.

Embers travelled miles, igniting whole communities and levelling neighbourhoods.

Nearly 7,000 structures were levelled in the Palisades fire in northwest LA. Another 9,400 were destroyed in the Eaton fire in the Altadena area of Los Angeles County. The fires also claimed a number of victims..

Exciting news for music fans in Los Angeles! A special benefit concert is set to take place, featuring two of the hottest artists in the industry right now: Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo.

The concert, which will be held at the iconic Staples Center, aims to raise funds for various local charities and organizations in need. Both Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo are known for their powerful and heartfelt music, so attendees can expect an unforgettable evening filled with incredible performances.

Tickets for the concert are sure to sell out quickly, so be sure to grab yours as soon as they go on sale. Stay tuned for more details on this can’t-miss event that is sure to make a positive impact on the Los Angeles community.

“In the latest FREE update to Hogwarts Legacy, PC Modding will now be officially supported with the release of our Creator Kit and in-game Mod Manager. It’s time to conjure up a whole new Hogwarts and live the unwritten like never before!”

As you can see from the video below, fans will be able to download the Creator Kit, which should simplify the procedure.

For starters, players will be able to make small changes like adding new hairstyles to the game, or changing appearances.

On the other end of the scale, modders can even create entire dungeons, and conjure up new quests.

Modding can also add things like magic carpet rides, new brooms, and even additional items.

Modders can upload their creations by creating an account with Warner Bros. A selection of pre-made mods will also be available at launch, just to get the creative juices flowing.

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG set long before the events of the Harry Potter books and films.

Players must attend classes and learn new skills, such as casting spells, creating potions and identifying beasts. That’s on top of attempting to save the entire wizarding world.

“Experience Hogwarts in the 1800s,” reads the official description. “Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.

“Make allies, battle Dark wizards, and ultimately decide the fate of the wizarding world. Your legacy is what you make of it. Live the Unwritten.”
