  • Sundance 2025 features uncharted queer territory and reimagined LGBTQ classics

The 41st annual Sundance Film Festival kicks off Thursday in Park City, Utah, with a heady slate of 90 feature-length films from around the globe. Each film will also screen in nearby Salt Lake City at least once during the festival, which runs through Feb. 2.

Long at the forefront of breaking the best and most daring in LGBTQ cinema, Sundance will bring the goods again, with 15 dramatic and documentary features on the exciting and largely upbeat roster.

“The list is really celebratory,” Sundance programmer Ash Hoyle said. “Sometimes the queer community, we’re so good at looking at and documenting our own histories and our own struggles — and that’s certainly at play with a lot of these, as well — but the tone this year is overwhelmingly really optimistic and really celebratory.”

Jennifer Lopez stars alongside Diego Luna in an extravagant musical remake of the 1985 queer classic “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” while Bowen Yang co-stars with Lily Gladstone in a reimagining of the 1993 gay favorite “The Wedding Banquet.”

A host of returning Sundance directors and LGBTQ audience favorites will also premiere their latest works, including Ira Sachs (“Peter Hujar’s Day”), Zackary Drucker (“Enigma”) and Elegance Bratton (“Move Ya Body: The Birth of House”).

Last year’s Sundance Film Festival premiered several of the year’s most acclaimed LGBTQ titles, including Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” which recently picked up nine Dorian Award nominations from GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ+ Entertainment Critics.

“I think this shows how audiences are craving something different and films that are in breaking the mold and filmmakers like Jane who are willing to take risks in their work,” said Sundance’s director of programming, Kim Yutani.

Fortunately for those who can’t attend the festival, more than half of this year’s LGBTQ titles will also be available for ticketed online screening starting Jan. 30.

Here are the LGBTQ features that will premiere this year:

    Olivia Coleman and John Lithgow
Olivia Coleman and John Lithgow in “Jimpa” by Sophie Hyde.Mark De Blok / Sundance Institute

“We’re starting off the festival on Day One with Sophie Hyde’s latest film,” Yutani said. “She’s had many films at the festival — most recently ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ — but this feels like her most personal film as she looks at intergenerational relationships, with a character who is a filmmaker played by Olivia Colman. Sophie’s own child, Aud Mason-Hyde, is one of the main actors, which adds another layer of things as a close personal story. It’s a really fun film — it’s set in Amsterdam; it’s John Lithgow as you’ve never seen him before.”

    Chase Strangio
Chase Strangio in “Heightened Scrutiny” by Sam Feder.Courtesy Sundance Institute

“Particularly exciting is Sam Feder’s new film that follows Chase Strangio, the ACLU lawyer who went to the Supreme Court for litigation this year,” Hoyle said. “It’s just one of many really prescient, urgent films that are in the festival this year. Really grateful for Sam’s voice in the program and being able to really meet the moment that we’re in in the U.S. this year.”

    Dylan O'Brien and James Sweeney
Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney in “Twinless” by James Sweeney.Greg Cotten / Sundance Institute

“This one is definitely one that’s already sort of buzzing around and people are going to be really excited by,” Hoyle said of the film about two young men who meet in a twin bereavement group and form an unlikely bromance. “Talk about daring — this is a film about messy dark queerness, with a really interesting angle. It’s funny, it’s sexy, and it’s actually one of a great number of films in U.S. Dramatic Competition this year that are written, directed and starred in by a singular voice, James Sweeney.” (available online)

the wedding banquet Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Han Gi-Chan, Bowen Yang
Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Han Gi-Chan and Bowen Yang in “The Wedding Banquet” by Andrew Ahn.Luka Cyprian / Sundance Institute

“This one has all the right elements, like the fun, starry cast [including Yang and Gladstone] and direction by Andrew Ahn — who made the beloved ‘Spa Night’ and ‘Fire Island,’ of course — and he co-wrote the script with James Schamus, who was the writer of the original ‘Wedding Banquet,’” said Yutani. “It’s not a direct remake, but rather it uses the Ang Lee film as more of a launchpad to tell its own story.”

    Tonatiuh and Diego Luna
Tonatiuh and Diego Luna in “Kiss of the Spider Woman” by Bill Condon.Courtesy Sundance Institute

Already a 1985 queer film classic and a 1993 Tony-sweeping musical, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is reimagined here as a movie musical by director Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls,” “Gods and Monsters”) with stars Lopez and Luna. “This film has such amazing performances and old-school Hollywood grandeur. We couldn’t be happier that this, too, will be one of the buzziest titles at the festival.”

    Vince Lawrence and Jesse Saunders
Vince Lawrence and Jesse Saunders in “Move Ya Body: The Birth of House” by Elegance Bratton.Vince Lawrence / Sundance Institute

“This doc by Elegance Bratton looks at the history of house music and its birthplace in Chicago and of course the queer Black community from which the scene erupted,” Hoyle said. “This film has an amazing cast of characters, folks who really touched and started the scene. And it’s really insightful around how some of the history of race in the city and gender politics played into the evolution of house music and which communities have taken it forward and of course gotten credit and financial success from it.”

    Amanda Lear
Amanda Lear in “Enigma” by Zackary Drucker.Lys Arango / Sundance Institute

This documentary feature from Zackary Drucker, who co-directed 2023’s “The Stroll,” explores the lives of two legendary transgender women: English model April Ashley and French singer Amanda Lear. “This is a really fun title that looks at two divergent lives and how they explore and foil one another in terms of how a person navigates queer community,” said Hoyle, who added that the film is a “fascinating story and a rich look at trans history.”

Nina Rask and Magnus Juhl Andersen
Nina Rask and Magnus Juhl Andersen in “Sauna” by Mathias Broe.Christian Geisnæs / Sundance Institute

Hoyle said this narrative feature “feels so nuanced to a degree that it’s really not anything I’ve seen before. It explores gay male affinity spaces and how trans men do and don’t fit into those. It’s also a romantic love story, but it doesn’t shy away from the parts of love and infatuation that are really approximate to jealousy and to competition. As we hear more and more conversation around belonging and inclusivity, this is a film that is really complicating ‘What exactly does that mean? What does that look like? Where is that easy, and where is it really hard?’”

    Ben Whishaw
Ben Whishaw in “Peter Hujar’s Day” by Ira Sachs.Courtesy Sundance Institute

“Ira Sachs [‘Keep the Lights On,’ ‘Passages’] is one of the filmmakers who has played Sundance the most, if not the most,” Yutani said. “This one we were attracted to because it is so different from his other work. I think one of the exciting things about Ira is just how he continues to challenge himself and to work in almost different forms. This is an adaptation of an interview with the artist Peter Hujar, and it’s basically a monologue that Ben Whishaw delivers so exquisitely. This is just a special film that transports you to a different time, a different place, a specific place, and it’s just made with such a delicate touch.”

    Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley
Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley in “Come See Me in the Good Light” by Ryan White.Brandon Somerhalder / Sundance Institute

“This film is a gut punch,” Hoyle said. “It’s a beautiful portrait of the poet laureate of Colorado, Andrea Gibson, who’s a real talent and who’s navigating a really difficult cancer diagnosis with their girlfriend. It’s a beautiful portrait of their relationship and their sort of loving intellectual approach to the process of dying. And then, of course, it’s interwoven with their poetry, which is just relentlessly moving. This is not one to miss, but not one to attend without a full packet of Kleenex.”

    Sally Ride
Sally Ride, the subject of “Sally” by Cristina Costantini.NASA via Sundance Institute

This documentary about the life of astronaut Sally Ride “really has everything,” Hoyle said. “It’s got a queer love story, it has an analysis of the implications, and it’s a great way to track the way that being out has changed in the public eye over the years since Sally Ride’s career. It’s also a really incisive look at the culture at NASA, both around queer staff and female staff, in a way that’s just really, really eye-opening. We have here such a triumphant look at our own space program but especially at this time, when we’re seeing gender politics play out in that space so loudly.”

    Bhushaan Manoj and Suraaj Suman
Bhushaan Manoj and Suraaj Suman in “Sabar Bonda” (“Cactus Pears”) by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade.Vikas Urs / Sundance Institute

“This is a semi-autobiographical film about a young man who goes back to his hometown in India and is struggling to be true to his own identity with his family,” Yutani said. “The kind of pastoral gay story that it’s telling is a really special one. It’s probably one of the more explicit gay films I’ve seen out of India, too.”

A still from "GEN_" by Gianluca Matarrese.
    A still from “GEN_” by Gianluca Matarrese.Bellota Films/Stemal Entertainment/Elefants Films/Sundance Institute

This documentary feature “focuses on a doctor in Milan, Dr. Bini, and we have a very intimate look at how he communicates with his patients, quite a few of whom are dealing with their gender identity,” Yutani said. “If this film offers anything, it’s offering optimism and what medical treatment for all people could be. And it is truly extraordinary to see this doctor at work.”

    Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey
Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey in “Plainclothes” by Carmen Emmi.Ethan Palmer / Sundance Institute

“This is a period piece about the ’90s, a fun look back into very recent history about a plainclothes police officer who’s entrapping gay men in mall bathrooms and then ends up having an exploration of his own sexuality through the role play that he’s engaging in,” Hoyle said. “One of the things we responded to about this film is just how exquisitely it’s made. We were so excited to see a first-time filmmaker executing technically at the level that Carmen [Emmi] is in a first feature. It’s just beautifully made, really precise and really interesting narrative terrain.”

    Santiago Pineda and Sofía Buenaventura
Santiago Pineda and Sofía Buenaventura in “Rains Over Babel” by Gala del Sol.Sten Tadashi Olson / Sundance Institute

This feature film from Colombia is centered on a group of misfits who hang out a dive bar that doubles as purgatory, according to the film’s description on Sundance’s website. Yutani described it as a “very attractive film with kind of this weird goth punk feel to it” and said it “completely builds its own landscape that is just totally unique.”

    NBC

According to a synopsis, the new series follows a group led by Ted, a former New York prosecutor who built an LA law firm that specializes in criminal and entertainment law.

Amell is seen at the start of the trailer in what appears to be a conference room in a fancy LA high rise, overlooking the city below. Victoria Justice’s character Dylan Pryor appears and says, “So, you’re the mighty Ted Black,” telling him that he doesn’t represent her when he slides paperwork across a massive table for her.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Bryan Greenberg’s character Rick Dodson is introduced, as well as Lex Scott Davis, who portrays Erica Rollins. Both appear to be executives serving as the law firm’s “co-heads of entertainment.”

Harvey Specter, who was portrayed by Gabriel Macht in the original series, isn’t seen, but he is mentioned at the end of the trailer when a photo of him among a group of other men is shown.

Troy Winbush’s character Kevin tells Ted in that moment that Harvey was the “only person … cockier” than Ted.

“That’s exactly why I liked him,” Ted replies.

    See the trailer here:

“Suits” ran for nine seasons between 2011 and 2019 and starred Macht, Patrick Adams, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman and Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex.

Best Action Camera on the Market, Lowlight Game Changer!

5 out of 5 stars

Best Action Camera on the Market, Lowlight Game Changer!
Are you looking for a camera with a small form factor with amazing low light performance that still has great stabilization in low light? THIS IS IT!I am writing this review coming from using a GoPro Hero 12, even though this is GoPro's latest and greatest, I was unimpressed with the overall performance in everything besides perfect bright daylight. Using the Hero 12 in my garage with 3 overhead LED ceiling lights, the Hero 12 still struggles to show good low light footage, let alone have even remotely usable stabilization. VERY disappointed. After watching the review on the Unbox Therapy Youtube channel, I was sold. The Ace Pro CRUSHES the Hero 12 in low light, Night and Day difference, In area's the GoPro shows practically all black, the Ace Pro can clearly see everything despite there being almost no light. This was the biggest selling point for me because GoPro's absolute need for decent lighting to have remotely usable stabilization. (check out the crazy difference in my video example)I chock this up to the obvious larger 1/1.3" sensor and 5nm AI Chip that does de-noising of each frame in real time before saving to your SD card. It's pretty insane what this small form factor camera is able to do in low light, even compared to my Sony ZV-1 compact camera, it till has better low light performance! THIS is the reason for me taking a chance on this camera, and it was well worth it. Although there are some other great features I really like on the camera.Another really cool feature on this camera is the flip up touch screen. The Hero 12 has the front facing screen but it is very tiny in comparison, being able to see a much bigger preview of what your going to shoot is super useful, and anyone who thinks the hinge on the screen is a weak point, its rock-solid and will stop and hold firm in any angle you leave it in, I compare it to apply laptop quality hinges. Finally, the last thing that's very noticeable about the camera is the software user interface performance and control. Whatever chip they have running the UI is incredibly fast, flicking through different shooting modes, or even powering the camera on / off is almost instant. Compared to the GoPro it's still noticeably faster and in my opinion, the menu organization is better. If you compare it to a GoPro before the Hero 12 it is WAY faster in just about every way, if your upgrading from a older GoPro, this is like getting the latest and greatest iPhone, super snappy and responsive. If you use the insta360 app on your phone (which is still am learning and discovering new things) it has lots of AI goodies built in when it comes to editing, and highlighting footage you made, it will even attempt to auto edit clips together which is pretty sweet! I need to test this more long term, but for smaller project stuff it seems to be a neat idea.Pros:- Amazing low light performance, better than any other action camera (close second DJI Action 2)- 8K resolution option (allows for lossless zoom in)- BIG flip-up screen for framing yourself or using the camera in low angles, or even as a tilted stand.- Fast charging via USB-C with proper wattage charging brick.- Reliable hand /voice gestures for starting/stopping recording, taking photos, and powering off.- 360 App is very reliable and firmware updates are very fast and don't require a SD card.Cons:- Battery life only displayed by icon with no number % (could be fixed with software update)- Using external mic requires adapter (it's fairly cheap at least, not a deal breaker by any means)The last thing I will say, as a loyal GoPro user for the last 10 years, GoPro has really fallen behind lately, never thought I would jump ship to insta360 as I am not a 360 camera user, but the Ace Pro convinced me, and it's their first attempt at a action camera form. Imagine when they are on their 12th generation action camera like GoPro.

I’ve only had a couple of days to play around with it so far but in just a few days, the Insta360 Ace Pro has completely redefined my expectations for an action camera, setting the bar higher than ever before. This powerhouse of a device combines groundbreaking features that make it (IMO) the undisputed champion of action camera world.

First and foremost, let's talk about the jaw-dropping sensor size. The Ace Pro boasts the biggest sensor in an action camera, capturing every detail with unmatched clarity and precision. This larger sensor, combined with the premium glass from Leica, delivers an unparalleled level of image quality that I’m not seeing in any of the competition.

One of the standout features for me is the Ace Pro's unreal low-light capabilities. This is actually the main reason I bought it because I like to shoot low light content and my GoPro Hero 12 was simply not giving usable results. The combination of the large sensor and advanced low-light performance ensures that my footage remains crisp and vibrant, even in challenging lighting situations.

The real game-changer, however, is the in-camera AI processing. Insta360 used a new chip that they call a 5nm chip in Ace Pro which allows for real-time in camera AI processing to make all of your footage look good right out of the camera, with no post processing required. I can confirm this is accurate because my images look stunning. The camera's intelligence is evident in its ability to automatically edit footage on the fly. I haven’t tried the auto editing yet but I’m really excited to dig deeper because I absolutely dread editing my footage and I have terabytes of hard drives at home that are full of unedited content.

On top of that, the range of modes and features offered by the Ace Pro is nothing short of impressive. From creative shooting modes like motion timelapses to advanced functionalities like AI Warp, this camera really does it all. It's not just an action camera; it's a complete creative toolkit that adapts to various scenarios seamlessly.

I’ve owned a lot of action cameras but the Insta360 Ace Pro is shaping up to be the best action camera I’ve ever used. Once I dig deeper in the other modes, I’ll update this review with in more detail! So far so good. Nice work Insta360!

Are you looking for a camera with a small form factor with amazing low light performance that still has great stabilization in low light? THIS IS IT!

I am writing this review coming from using a GoPro Hero 12, even though this is GoPro's latest and greatest, I was unimpressed with the overall performance in everything besides perfect bright daylight. – 8K resolution option (allows for lossless zoom in)
    – BIG flip-up screen for framing yourself or using the camera in low angles, or even as a tilted stand.
    – Fast charging via USB-C with proper wattage charging brick.
    – Reliable hand /voice gestures for starting/stopping recording, taking photos, and powering off.
    – 360 App is very reliable and firmware updates are very fast and don't require a SD card.

    Cons:
    – Battery life only displayed by icon with no number % (could be fixed with software update)
    – Using external mic requires adapter (it's fairly cheap at least, not a deal breaker by any means)

Got frustrated with my 5 GoPro cameras that almost always had some sort of issue, whether a functional issue or a connection issue. This product worked perfectly out of the box and is supremely easy to use. Software is excellent and highly reliable. Much better camera interface than the Gopro and better quality photos and video overall. Camera is very responsive and snappy. Highly recommended. No more GoPros for me. I'm converted.

  • AO 2025: De Minaur ready for Michelsen challenge | 19 January, 2025 | All News | News and Features | News and Events

With the chance to reach a first quarterfinal at his home Grand Slam, a fiercely focused Alex de Minaur is preparing to face Alex Michelsen at AO 2025.

    Melbourne, Australia , 19 January 2025 | Sean A’Hearn

With just one set dropped in three 2025 matches, Alex de Minaur’s Australian Open path doesn’t get any easier.

After solid wins over Dutchman Botic Van de Zandschulp and American Tristan Boyer, De Minaur was pushed against No.31 seed, Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.

Now he faces rising young American star, Alex Michelsen, who has been in red-hot form himself, downing 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opening match and claiming his latest win over 19th seed Karen Khachanov.

Despite the challenging task ahead, many qualified observers – including former world No.1 Pat Rafter – believe the Michelsen match-up suits the Australian.

“I back him against Michelsen. I know Michelsen has a really big game [but] can he keep it up against someone like Alex?” Rafter said.

“I think it’s a bad match-up for Michelsen personally … if he can keep it together, he can cause a lot of destruction, I think, Michelsen. But I like Alex [de Minaur] there.”

With their head-to-head record tied at one win apiece, De Minaur is well aware of Michelsen’s powerful game and strong form entering their fourth-round encounter.

“He’s been playing really well. He’s a dangerous opponent with a lot of confidence now. He’s taken some big scalps this week, so ready for a battle,” the Sydneysider said.

“He’s going to go out there with no fear. I’m going to do my best to make it difficult for him.”

While acknowledging he wasn’t at his best against Cerundolo, the eighth-seeded De Minaur believes he can take lessons into his next match against world No.41 Michelsen.

“A part of me knew that at some point there was going to be always a match where pressure was going to be there and the nerves were going to be there, kind of the expectation was going to be there,” he conceded.

“I knew it was going to be a part of it.

“I just told myself to go out there, compete. I’d rather win ugly any day over losing pretty, right? Ultimately, I lived to fight another day. My next one I’ll make sure I bring a better level,” the 25-year-old smiled.

Should “Demon” progress to a first quarterfinal at his home Grand Slam, there’s a potential meeting with world No.1 and defending champion, Jannik Sinner, who next faces talented 13th seed Holger Rune.

  • Eagles-Rams features the latest Vic Fangio-Sean McVay coaching matchup

The Eagles’ matchup against the Rams this Sunday is what Brandon Staley calls an “iPad game.”

It’s another meeting between Vic Fangio and Sean McVay, two of the most influential coaches in the NFL over the last five years and men whose previous matchups have had ripple effects that helped shape championships, coaching hires, and much more.

For Staley, it’s a meeting between two of his former bosses. The San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach who spent time on Fangio’s staff in Denver from 2017 to 2019 and McVay’s in 2020 knows plenty about the “classified” philosophies each coach takes into this Sunday’s divisional-round matchup at Lincoln Financial Field. So just before kickoff, he’ll sit down, tablet in hand, eager to see how his former colleagues try to outsmart each other.

“It’s going to be a great matchup for the NFL,” Staley told The Inquirer. “I’ll have the iPad, for sure. It’s definitely going to be an iPad game. It’s going to be a game where you watch it live on TV and then the next morning, you watch the offensive and defensive side to make sure you confirm what you saw.”

Staley likely won’t be alone in his plan to study the game within the game between Fangio as Eagles defensive coordinator and McVay calling plays at the helm for the Rams, which helps explain how each coach has forged the impression they have across the NFL’s coaching circuit in the first place. From McVay’s lengthy coaching tree to the recent shift by more than a dozen of the league’s defensive play-callers to adopt the broad strokes of Fangio’s scheme, each coach’s imprint on the NFL is apparent.

That imprint led to Fangio’s principles preceding him on the Eagles’ coaching staff by a few years. Former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon didn’t work with Fangio, but he had a similar approach in his two years calling the team’s defense, and Sean Desai, Gannon’s replacement in 2023, was an assistant under Fangio along with Staley in Chicago.

» READ MORE: Three cheers for Vic Fangio, the oldie but goodie in charge of a great Eagles defense

Still, bringing the original author onto Eagles coach Nick Sirianni’s staff has been transformative for the defense this season. The group finished the regular season No. 1 in yards allowed and held the Green Bay Packers to a season-low 10 points in a wild-card win last Sunday.

When asked how Fangio is able to stay ahead of the curve even as, by Staley’s estimation, 75% of the league has implemented parts of his scheme, Fangio’s former assistant said the complexity is rooted in the fundamentals.

“The big thing with Vic is he’s going to get a group that knows how to kill blocks and tackle,” Staley said. “That’s really important to him, making sure they’re in good position to be fundamentally sound. He’s not overly scheme-y as a coach. I think that’s why his defenses are so consistent — he has enough mixture to keep an offense off-balance, but his defenses are going to be fundamentally sound, and it’s going to be very hard to get explosive plays that offenses feast off of because his guys are always going to be in good position, they’re going to disguise, and they’re going to make you go the long road.”

    ‘Farmy’ in the middle

When Tanner McKee watches the Eagles secondary swarm opposing receivers and force incompletions, there’s a mixture of familiarity and vindication.

As the scout-team quarterback most days in practice, the second-year signal caller out of Stanford likely has played more downs against the Eagles defense than anyone else since Fangio’s arrival.

The coach’s tendency to keep things uniform pre-snap to disguise coverages and the allowance he gives his players to adjust to different route concepts post-snap can be tough on a quarterback, McKee explained. The sometimes-futile nature of a scout team quarterback certainly doesn’t help, either.

“I obviously feel that in practice,” McKee said. “I think something’s open, I’ll be like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to try to rip this’ and then I’m like, ‘Oh crap, they were giving me that because this guy was going to have his back.’”

» READ MORE: Truths from a Phillies diehard: Vic Fangio, the grizzly Eagles DC and baseball traditionalist, plays it straight

There have been more than a few moments this season of déjà vu for McKee, who said he considers himself all the better for working against a group that allowed the fewest net yards per pass attempt in the regular season and picked off Packers quarterback Jordan Love three times last week.

While Fangio typically employs a heavy amount of zone coverages, the nature of those calls sometimes differs from other coaches across the league. Instead of having players drop to a specific area, they either have “matching” assignments for each receiver or permission to be reactive to how things unfold.

“He does a really good job of getting his guys to understand the scheme as a whole,” McKee said. “Not just saying, ‘Hey, you’re going to be the flat defender, this is what you’re going to do’ and kind of check off a box if you’re in the flat. No, you’re in the flat, but if you see a two-levels concept, make sure you turn your hips and try to either mess with the quarterback or take the higher angle. I think he does a really good job of emphasizing the details and things like that.”

» READ MORE: Zack Baun and the Eagles defense save the day

Eagles linebacker Zack Baun, who was named first-team All-Pro in his first year under Fangio after switching to a new position in the summer, added: “His Cover 3 isn’t like any other Cover 3. He really allows players to be, we call it ‘farmy’ in the middle of the field. Like, you’re not just hovering over one guy, if a motion is supposed to take you out, and that’s your guy, you kind of have leverage to steal something in the middle of the field. It’s not flashy … it’s not exotic, but I think he makes it difficult on quarterbacks because he’s able to morph and change it every week.”

Baun got the first postseason interception of his career against Green Bay by being “farmy” in the middle of the field. After identifying the Packers intention to draw him toward an underneath route to create space in the intermediate middle of the field, Baun worked to “steal” back the deep dig developing behind him.

It required him to venture from his original assignment and one he conceded he probably wouldn’t have been empowered to pursue early in the season for lack of trust from his coach.

“I think with Vic, you’ve got to earn that type of freedom,” Baun said postgame. “It’s a ‘if you take it, you [better] make it’ type of play. I trusted it and went and got it.”

    A structural ambush

Baun’s role in the Eagles defense, sometimes serving as an extra edge defender to bolster the defensive line and more often playing as an off-ball linebacker, evokes memories of the game plan that helped popularize Fangio’s system five years ago.

For most, the inflection point between McVay and Fangio traces back to 2018, when Fangio’s Bears used a six-man front to combat the dominant run and play-action game McVay had crafted that season. Two weeks after the Rams put up 54 points against the Kansas City Chiefs, Fangio held the group to just six while laying the blueprint former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick used against the Rams to win Super Bowl LIII, 13-3.

“They were rolling,” Staley said. “… Nobody had slowed them down the whole season. Really for his first season and a half, he had been running up and down the field against everybody. I think we caught him at the right time, it was the right night, and our group in Chicago was really special.

“Structurally, we kind of ambushed them that night and had some things ready for them,” he added. “We had a lot of tape on them, and we played them later on in the season. I think that was an advantage.”

What stemmed from then was a transition across the league away from the single-high defenses popularized by the Seattle Seahawks in the early 2010s back toward the two deep safeties Fangio employed while still finding ways to stuff the run against coaches like McVay and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.

Staley, who was an outside linebackers coach on Fangio’s staff in Chicago and then with the Denver Broncos, said the last five seasons have seen about three-quarters of the league adopt parts of the scheme they ran back then.

“Guys like Sean [McVay] and Kyle [Shanahan], they really put you in conflict with the marriage of the run and the pass game,” Staley said. “I think the amount of motion that has entered the league because of them, it has totally changed the way the game is played from a defensive perspective. … Since Chicago in 2018, there’s been an explosion.”

After struggling against Fangio’s system, McVay hired Staley as the Rams defensive coordinator before the 2020 season. It’s worth noting, in an article published by ESPN in 2019, McVay, Shanahan, and Packers coach Matt LaFleur named Fangio as the most difficult defensive coach in the NFL to go against.

Fangio was similarly complimentary about McVay earlier this week.

“He’s got a great offense that he has great command of,” Fangio said Tuesday. “And he’s a really good play-caller during the game. He can change gears on you at a moment’s notice, and he’s one of the top play-callers in the league for sure, without a doubt.”

And while the most recent meeting between Fangio and McVay ended in a 37-20 Eagles win over the Rams in Week 12, Staley said the lesser-discussed meeting between the two coaches in 2016 helps balance the scales going into this weekend a little. Serving as the offensive coordinator for Washington that year, McVay’s offense managed 41 points against Fangio’s Bears, something Staley was quick to mention in his job interview with the Rams coach a few years later.

“I remember in my interview with Sean, we’re talking about 2018, and I’m like, ‘Hey, I know what you did in 2016,’” Staley said. “He doesn’t talk about that, and I think you need to talk about that. … We were able to declassify some things. Only when I felt like I’d get the job, though. It’s the ultimate chess match, the ultimate respect.”

As the board resets on Fangio and McVay’s latest chess match, Staley said he wouldn’t expect Fangio to alter much of his process even in the lead-up to playing one of the league’s best play-callers a second time in one season.

McVay might, though — a key difference between two proven approaches.

“Well, I can tell you, with Vic Fangio, his preparation doesn’t change,” Staley said. “He’s done this too many times. He’s one of the most consistent people that you’re going to be around. I wish I knew him when he was super young so I could see if he was that way when he was a young guy like I am. Sean knows when the matchups are premium, that’s when he’s going to elevate his game. You’ve seen Sean do that in the playoffs since he’s been a head coach. But he’s going to elevate and do what he feels like is best within that plan and really study.”

With his familiarity with both coaches, Staley said his “iPad game” viewing will key in on how the Rams start offensively. The former Los Angeles Chargers head coach knows how difficult it can be making calls against McVay when he gets an early edge.

“You can tell when he’s in rhythm with the sequencing of his plays and where he kind of feels like he’s got the defense on its heels,” Staley said. “He’s on the attack. You hear basketball players being aggressive, that’s kind of what I think of with Sean when he’s really aggressive and really in rhythm as a play-caller.”

From there, he’ll watch to see how the patience he believes separates Fangio from most defensive play-callers comes to bear in the final moments of a game many around the league are sure to study in the months to come.

“With Vic, what stands out to me with him as a play-caller is his patience,” Staley said. “He’s extremely patient. He’s not going to be rattled. If there are adjustments to make, he’ll make them late in the game if he needs to because he has that gift of having so many experiences and he’s seen everything. He’s got a really good feel for the game about when to deploy certain looks and when to save them for a certain moment.”

Fangio, the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, is known for his innovative schemes and ability to shut down high-powered offenses. His aggressive play-calling and attention to detail have made him one of the most respected defensive minds in the NFL.

On the other side of the field, McVay, the Rams’ head coach, is a young and dynamic offensive genius. His innovative play-calling and ability to exploit mismatches have made the Rams one of the most explosive offenses in the league.

This matchup between Fangio and McVay is sure to be a chess match of epic proportions, as each coach tries to outsmart and outmaneuver the other. It will be fascinating to see how Fangio’s defense matches up against McVay’s high-flying offense, and which coach will come out on top in this battle of wits.

  • ‘Dateline’ features murder of Atlanta attorney shot by wife, left on burn pile

The Farris homicide will be the focus of NBC’s “Dateline,” reported by correspondent Keith Morrison and airing at 9 p.m. Friday.

The case dates back several years to when Gary Farris was reported missing. And though his wife became the only suspect, it would take more than six years before a jury convicted Melody Farris.

“In July 2018, a horrific murder occurred in Cherokee County,” said District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway in a statement after the November conviction. “A man was shot, then left on a burn pile, where his remains were later discovered. The victim, Gary Farris, was killed by his wife on his own property. The shocking facts of this crime will forever remain with all who were involved in this case, including first responders, prosecutors, jurors and witnesses. Today, through this verdict, we are able to finally bring justice for Gary Farris.”

It was the couple’s youngest son who found his father’s remains on the family property. It would take weeks for authorities to determine that the extensively burned remains belonged to the 58-year-old man, an attorney for the regional law firm Burr and Forman and the founder of its Atlanta office.

Early in the investigation, deputies felt confident Gary Farris had known his killer.

DNA and Melody Farris’ own confession to the man she was seeing on the side ultimately led investigators to their suspect.

“He’s on the burn pile,” she allegedly told Rusty Barton, her Tennessee love interest at the time. Cherokee sheriff’s office Detective Daniel Hayes testified about the phone call and other jarring details during a probable cause hearing after her arrest.

In November 2019, Farris was granted a $250,000 bond and was out of jail until her conviction. She’s now serving at Arrendale State Prison in Habersham County, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

As part of her sentence, Melody Farris does have the possibility of parole, court records show. She must serve a minimum of 30 years in order to be considered for parole, the judge ruled.

In a shocking turn of events, the latest episode of Dateline featured the murder of an Atlanta attorney who was shot by his own wife and left on a burn pile. The story unfolded with chilling details as investigators delved into the twisted relationship between the victim and his killer.

The attorney, well-known in his community for his successful legal practice, was found dead in a remote area outside of the city. His wife initially claimed that he had gone missing, but suspicions quickly rose when inconsistencies in her story were uncovered.

As the investigation progressed, it was revealed that the attorney's wife had a history of mental health issues and a tumultuous relationship with her husband. The motive for the murder was unclear, but it was evident that the wife had carefully planned the crime and attempted to cover her tracks.

Viewers were left on the edge of their seats as Dateline reporters pieced together the evidence and uncovered the truth behind the attorney's tragic death. The episode served as a stark reminder of the dark side of human nature and the devastating consequences of unchecked emotions.

The case of the Atlanta attorney's murder will no doubt leave a lasting impact on all those who followed the story, serving as a cautionary tale of how quickly one's life can unravel in the face of betrayal and violence. Stay tuned for more updates on this chilling case as the investigation continues to unfold.
