  • Vanguard slashes fees; expects its investors will save $350 million in 2025

(Reuters) – Asset manager Vanguard said on Monday it was lowering the cost of investing across its fund lineup in its largest cut ever and estimated that this would translate into savings of more than $350 million for its investors this year.

Valley Forge, Pennsylvania-based Vanguard slashed the expense ratio, or the cost of owning a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund, between one and six basis points across 87 of its funds, effective Feb. 1.

The fee cut will lower costs across its bond mutual funds, ETFs, U.S. equity, international equity and money market funds.

“The reductions will save Vanguard’s investors more than $350 million in 2025 alone, the largest annual expense ratio reduction in Vanguard’s nearly 50-year history,” the company said.

“Lower fees mean fund investors can keep more of their returns and a competitive edge for our funds,” said Greg Davis, Vanguard’s chief investment officer.

Chief Executive Officer Salim Ramji, who took over the mantle in July, laid out plans last year to expand the firm’s fixed-income offering, given the market’s size and opportunities.

“Lower costs enable investors to keep more of their returns, and those savings compound over time,” Ramji said.

Bonds were poised to play a crucial role in investors’ portfolios, according to Davis.

Founded by Jack Bogle in 1975, the company has about $10.4 trillion in assets under management as of Nov. 30, 2024.

Vanguard and larger rival BlackRock are the world’s largest providers of ETFs – low-cost products aimed at retail investors looking for an inexpensive way to invest in the biggest global markets.

Vanguard offered 428 funds worldwide as of Dec. 31, 2024, with 212 of these in the United States.

It has lowered investing costs more than 2,000 times since its founding, the company said.

Vanguard, one of the world’s largest investment management companies, has announced that it will be slashing fees on its funds in an effort to save its investors an estimated $350 million by 2025.

This move comes as part of Vanguard’s ongoing commitment to providing low-cost investment options for its clients. The company has long been known for its low fees compared to other investment firms, and this latest fee reduction is expected to further benefit Vanguard’s investors.

By lowering fees, Vanguard hopes to help its clients achieve their financial goals more efficiently and effectively. The $350 million in savings over the next few years is expected to make a significant impact on investors’ portfolios and overall financial well-being.

Vanguard’s decision to reduce fees demonstrates its dedication to putting investors first and providing them with the best possible investment options. This move is sure to be welcomed by Vanguard clients who are always looking for ways to maximize their returns and minimize their costs.

  • Vanguard cuts fees for nearly 100 funds, including ETFs with billions in assets

Asset management giant Vanguard announced broad fee cuts for many mutual funds and exchange-traded funds on Monday, reinforcing its standing as one of the cheapest options for investors.

The move reduces fees on 87 different funds, and 168 total share classes of those funds. The average fee cut is 20% per share class. Vanguard said this is its biggest fee cut ever and will save investors about $350 million this year, based on current asset levels.

“We’re proud to build on Vanguard’s legacy of lowering the costs of investing—which we have done more than 2,000 times since our founding—by announcing our largest ever set of expense ratio reductions. Lower costs enable investors to keep more of their returns, and those savings compound over time,” Vanguard CEO Salim Ramji said in a press release.

The list of cuts includes actively managed and index-based products, with many of the funds representing billions of dollars. Stocks, bonds and commodities products are all included in the reductions. Some of the funds on the Vanguard list include:

Fund fees for mutual funds and ETFs are assessed as an annual percentage of total assets under management for the share class.

The fee cuts to VEGBX and some other actively managed bond funds is notable because active fixed income is emerging as a growth area for the exchange-traded fund industry. The booming popularity of ETFs, which can be purchased more easily than many mutual funds, is often cited as a key factor in driving down management fees for stock funds in recent decades.

Vanguard said its actively managed fixed income funds and ETFs have a weighted average expense ratio of 0.10% versus an industry average of 0.53%.

Vanguard has long been a leader in lowering fees among asset managers, a tradition dating back to its founder, Jack Bogle. Monday’s announcement is a sign that the trend could continue under Ramji, who took over as CEO in 2024 and previously worked at rival BlackRock.

The fee cuts come less than a month after Vanguard agreed to pay more than $100 million to settle charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission related to disclosures around some of its retirement products.

Don’t miss these insights from CNBC PRO

Vanguard, one of the largest investment management companies in the world, has announced a significant fee reduction for nearly 100 funds, including several popular exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with billions of dollars in assets.

This move is part of Vanguard’s ongoing efforts to provide cost-effective investment options for its clients and to remain competitive in the ever-evolving financial market. The fee cuts range from a few basis points to more significant reductions, making Vanguard’s funds even more attractive to investors seeking low-cost investment options.

Some of the ETFs that will benefit from the fee cuts include the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF, the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF, and the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF, all of which have billions of dollars in assets under management.

Investors who hold these funds in their portfolios will see a decrease in their expense ratios, ultimately leading to higher returns over time. With these fee reductions, Vanguard continues to solidify its position as a leader in the investment management industry, offering high-quality funds at competitive prices.

Overall, this fee cut is great news for investors who are looking to minimize costs while maximizing their investment returns. Vanguard’s commitment to providing low-cost, high-quality investment options is a win-win for investors seeking to grow their wealth over the long term.

  • Ticketmaster class-action settlement to reimburse 1 million Canadians for deceptive fees

People who bought event tickets through Ticketmaster in 2018 are now eligible for compensation.

A $6-million settlement that could see around a million Canadians eligible for a credit with Ticketmaster was finalized last week at Regina’s Court of King’s Bench.

The lawsuit, launched by plaintiff Crystal Watch, took Ticketmaster to court for hiding the prices of ticket fees in 2018. Ticketmaster refused to agree to any wrongdoing on their part, but the case never went to trial and the company agreed to settle.

The suit was overseen by Justice Graeme Mitchell. He wrote in the published decision that affected customers are eligible to receive up to $45 in Ticketmaster credit to be used toward future ticket purchases. The credit is transferable, but can only be used once.

Watch, who acted as the representative plaintiff, received an honorarium of $25,000, paid from the settlement amount.

Outside of Court of King's Bench of Saskatchewan in Regina. The sun is shining.
The settlement was finazlized at Regina’s Court of King’s Bench on Jan. 15. (Chris Edwards/CBC)

The class action case claimed that Ticketmaster engaged in unfair “drip pricing,” where unnecessary fees outside the regular ticket price were deceptively added to the total price. The lawsuit said this breached The Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act.

In order to be eligible, customers need to have purchased tickets through Ticketmaster for Canadian events between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2018. Customers in Quebec and any Ticketmaster employees aren’t eligible for compensation.

Regina lawyer Tony Merchant, whose firm represented the plaintiffs, previously said he believes up to 100,000 people in Saskatchewan and about a million people across Canada could be eligible for a credit.

Eligible Ticketmaster users should get an email shortly from Ticketmaster with a link to receive their credit.

If a Ticketmaster user who is eligible for credit doesn’t receive it, Merchant said they can contact his firm.

How the money is being distributed

The lawsuit resulted in a $6-million settlement, out of which lawyers will take $1,725,000 in fees due to the case being a class action lawsuit. This will leave Ticketmaster users with $4.3-million to be distributed between people affected.

“While this case does not involve a mega-settlement, it has proved to be a legitimate consumer protection lawsuit which could only have been viably prosecuted as a class action,” the judge said in a written decision. “Class counsel deserve an economic incentive for pursuing this claim to its successful resolution.”

Ticketmaster, the popular ticket-selling platform, has reached a class-action settlement in Canada that will reimburse 1 million Canadians for deceptive fees. The settlement, which was approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, will see Ticketmaster refund customers for fees that were not clearly disclosed at the time of purchase.

The lawsuit alleged that Ticketmaster misled customers by charging hidden fees on top of advertised ticket prices, leading to inflated costs for consumers. The settlement will see Ticketmaster issue refunds to eligible customers who purchased tickets between October 1, 2013, and June 23, 2019. Customers who are eligible for refunds will receive an email notification with instructions on how to claim their reimbursement.

This class-action settlement is a victory for Canadian consumers who have been subjected to deceptive practices by Ticketmaster. It serves as a reminder to companies that they must be transparent about fees and charges to ensure a fair and honest purchasing experience for customers.

If you believe you are eligible for a refund as part of this settlement, be sure to keep an eye on your email for further instructions on how to claim your reimbursement. Let this be a lesson to all companies that deceptive practices will not go unnoticed or unpunished.

  • ‘A difficult question.’ With added service fees, how will people handle tipping?

(WXYZ) — After a story we did earlier this week about local restaurants adding service fees to customer’s bills, our Facebook page was flooded with hundreds of comments.

The restaurant says it’s in preparation for the tipped wage hike in February, and more restaurants could follow suit.

Watch below: Restaurants begin implementing service charges preparing for tipped wage hike

Restaurants begin implementing service charges preparing for tipped wage hike

After the comments, I went out to hear more from people about the potential change. We wanted to know how they are feeling about it, so we went to Main Donut Shop in Royal Oak.

We asked how the added charge on a restaurant bill would sit with people.

“I worked in service my whole life so I understand where they’re coming from,” George Ivey said.

    Poster image - 2025-01-24T054819.587.jpg

    WXYZ

“I don’t know about a service fee. I don’t know why we can’t just tip them,” Kerrie Utley added.

    Poster image - 2025-01-24T054833.258.jpg

    WXYZ

“I don’t think the added cost onto the people is fair, I don’t,” Dan Holmes, a Ferndale resident who is also a former fine-dining manager, said.

    Poster image - 2025-01-24T054840.872.jpg

    WXYZ

“That is a difficult question, but I think if the communication about that extra charge is part of the process, then I probably won’t have a problem with that,” Russell Boyle said. He’s a former server. “But if it’s something they’re just going to slap on and they’re not and they’re not going to mention it, which I know some people do, it’s going to be a little bit more challenging, maybe not for me but for a lot of other people who get really upset about hidden fees.”

    Poster image - 2025-01-24T054847.956.jpg

    WXYZ

“I think it would have to be some pretty good service for me to essentially double tip,” Gary Cavender said.

The logic behind it at one restaurant in Farmington is to help them afford the increase in worker pay. Adding a service charge instead of letting staff go or increasing menu prices.

“So they’re just flipping it back. Are you supposed to tip on top of that too,” Holmes said.

“If that’s what we gotta do to keep our wait staff fully staffed, that’s what we gotta do,” Utley added.

But for some, if it comes down to paying a service fee, adding a tip isn’t off the table.

“I wouldn’t go someplace and spend my money if it wasn’t good anyway. If somebody’s doing a really good job, I would pay both,” Cavender said.

“If it was on the bill or it wasn’t on the bill I would still continue to tip my servers will I still tip them 20% because they’re making more an hour I don’t know,” Boyle said.

While they don’t have to worry about that at their beloved donut shop, the minimum wage for tipped workers is expected to increase starting Feb. 21.

As if tipping wasn’t already a source of confusion and uncertainty for many, the addition of service fees at restaurants and other businesses has only made things more complicated. With service fees already tacked on to the bill, many people are left wondering: should they still tip on top of that?

It’s a difficult question with no easy answer. On one hand, tipping has long been seen as a way to reward good service and show appreciation to the staff. But with service fees now being charged, some argue that tipping on top of that is redundant and unnecessary.

So how will people handle tipping in this new landscape? Some may choose to still tip as they normally would, regardless of the service fee. Others may opt to adjust their tipping practices based on the level of service they received, regardless of the added fee.

Ultimately, the decision to tip or not to tip is a personal one, and there is no right or wrong answer. What’s important is that customers feel comfortable and confident in their choices, and that service staff are still treated with the respect and appreciation they deserve.

  • RFK Jr. to keep collecting fees from lawsuits against Merck over HPV vaccines : Shots

RFK Jr. made $856,559 in referral fees from the law firm Wisner Baum, which is suing Merck over claims its HPV vaccine caused cervical cancer, according to new filings with the Office of Government Ethics.

Even if Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is confirmed as the next Health and Human Services secretary, he still plans to collect fees from Wisner Baum, a law firm suing Merck over claims that the pharmaceutical company failed to properly warn consumers about risks from its HPV vaccine, Gardasil, according to new filings with the Office of Government Ethics.

Kennedy will only collect the fees if Wisner Baum wins, and only for cases that aren’t against the United States or in which the United States isn’t a party and doesn’t have “a direct or substantial interest,” according to the filings.

“Pursuant to the referral agreement, I am entitled to receive 10% of fees awarded in contingency fee cases referred to the firm,” Kennedy wrote in his signed ethics agreement. “I am not trying these cases, I am not an attorney of record for the cases, and I will not provide representational services in connection with the cases during my appointment to the position of Secretary.”

The filings, submitted to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics as part of the confirmation process, detail Kennedy’s many financial holdings and interests. If he becomes HHS secretary and continues to collect fees, he would be in a position to potentially profit from vaccine litigation while also regulating drugmakers and exercising authority over federal vaccine policy.

“RFK Jr’s ethics agreement is inadequate because it doesn’t address the bias created by his continuing financial interest in the litigation against Merck,” Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis who specializes in government ethics wrote to NPR.

Neither a spokeswoman for Kennedy nor the Trump transition team immediately returned repeated requests for comment.

The documents and their link to the Gardasil vaccine lawsuit were first reported by The New York Times.

The Senate Finance Committee has scheduled a hearing on Wednesday, Jan. 29, to consider Kennedy’s nomination to run HHS.

In Kennedy’s profile page on Wisner Baum’s website, he is first identified as “co-counsel with Wisner Baum in the Gardasil litigation,” and he has used his platforms on social media and through his nonprofit to promote the suit and his concerns with the vaccine against the human papillomavirus.

HPV is a very common sexually transmitted virus that can cause cancers later in life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of HPV vaccine at ages 11 to 12 and says it provides safe, effective and lasting protection against HPV infections.

According to Kennedy’s personal financial disclosure report, he made $856,559 in referral fees from the law firm. That’s in addition to $326,056 in salary and benefits he earned from the nonprofit Children’s Health Defense, an organization Kennedy chaired and that has been influential in the anti-vaccine movement. The nonprofit has filed nearly 30 federal and state lawsuits since 2020, including some that target the federal agencies he would oversee at HHS. Many of the legal actions taken by CHD challenged vaccines and public health mandates.

The filing says Kennedy took an unpaid leave of absence from the organization in April 2023, when he declared his run for the presidency, and that he resigned from CHD effective December 2024.

The filing also shows Kennedy declared a $8,848,402 share of partnership profits from the law firm Kennedy and Madonna, LLP, which has been renamed Madonna and Madonna, LLP. The filing says he received his “final partnership payout in May 2024.” He also made money from another law firm, publishing and various other fees for speaking and endorsements.

Edited by Scott Hensley and Jane Greenhalgh

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the prominent anti-vaccine activist, has announced that he will continue to collect fees from lawsuits filed against pharmaceutical company Merck over their HPV vaccines. Despite facing criticism for his involvement in spreading misinformation about vaccines, Kennedy insists that he is fighting for justice and accountability.

In a recent statement, Kennedy declared that he will not back down from his legal battles against Merck, alleging that the company has knowingly produced unsafe vaccines that have caused harm to individuals. He claims that his efforts are aimed at holding Merck accountable for their actions and ensuring that the public is aware of the risks associated with their products.

Kennedy’s decision to continue pursuing legal action against Merck has sparked controversy within the medical and scientific communities, with many experts condemning his anti-vaccine rhetoric and tactics. Critics argue that his unfounded claims about vaccine safety can contribute to the spread of misinformation and pose a threat to public health.

Despite the backlash, Kennedy remains steadfast in his mission to challenge Merck and seek justice for those he believes have been harmed by their vaccines. As the legal battles continue, the outcome remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the debate over vaccines and their safety will persist as long as activists like Kennedy continue to push their agendas.

  • NY’s plan to raise $33B for MTA in taxes, fees kept secret as Hochul passes buck to pols

New York is keeping secret its plan for new taxes and fees to fund $33 billion for the flailing Metropolitan Transportation Authority even as Gov. Kathy Hochul is set to propose her budget this week.

Hochul continues to refuse to publicly outline ideas to fill the massive hole in the MTA’s $68 billion five-year capital plan as sources said she’s highly unlikely to include a proposal in her executive budget proposal set to be released Tuesday.

Gov. Kathy Hochul is not expected to release a proposal to cover a $33 billion hole in the MTA’s capital plan as part of her executive budget to be released Tuesday. Matthew McDermott

Instead, the governor is continuing to point the figer at state legislative leaders who refused to sign onto the massively underfunded plan.

“That’s their prerogative,” Hochul told CBS News’ Marcia Kramer Sunday morning.

“And now they’ll go back and put together the plan that they want me to look at. Obviously, we need to get something done,” the governor added.

The leaders – Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Westchester) – have refused to fire back at Hochul, as top Democrats have been more keen to negotiating out of eyes of taxpayers.

“It’s a budget. We’ll figure it out,” Heastie told reporters last week when asked if he thinks the ball is in their court to propose a plan.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins say they expect tax or fee increases will be on the table as part of talks over how to fill a revenue hole in the MTA’s capital plan budget. Hans Pennink

Heastie and Stewart-Cousins have admitted taxes and fees are going to be part of the discussion to fill the revenue hole, something Hochul’s budget director said as early as November.

“I assume raising revenue will absolutely be on the table,” Heastie told Spectrum News last week.

With all sides refusing to blink publicly to float a proposal to raise revenue, those negotiations are almost certain to be worked out behind closed doors and outside the regular budget process.

“It’s cynical and it’s kind of a projection of fearfulness rather than strength,” said John Kaehny, executive director of good government group Reinvent Albany.

“It’s just dumb cynical gamesmanship I think ultimately will bite the governor since the public just doesn’t like that,” Kaehny continued.

The uncertainty comes as Hochul touts a slew proposals including many meant to address New York’s lack of “affordability” and address violence in the subways.

Hochul is floating billions of dollars of new spending that likely to jack up the overall cost of the state budget. Paul Martinka

One of those proposals includes sending out $3 billion worth of checks to low and middle income New Yorkers on top of income tax cuts, increased benefits for families with young kids and grants to prop up childcare centers.

Another proposal would spend $77 million to pad overtime to put 300 NYPD cops on subway trains overnight and another 750 on platforms.

On top of that, state spending on school aid and Medicaid is expected to balloon between $1 billion and $2 billion.

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber arrives for a press conference on Jan. 10. Stephen Yang

The Citizen Budget Commission’s Patrick Orecki estimates such proposals could ramp up spending by another $5-$6 billion without cuts elsewhere.

“On one hand Hochul wants to be the owner of the subway that floods them with police and spends billions of dollars in police overtime, but on the other she doesn’t want to be the governor that has to find new revenue for the capital plan,” Kaehny said. “I mean it’s just massively inconsistent and irritating and alienate public supporters of the MTA and transit.”

Individual legislators have been more apt to call for the governor to be more forthcoming.

“Ideally,” Deputy Senate Majority Leader Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) said when asked if the governor should roll out a proposal publicly.

“But the more important thing is that we get it done,” Gianaris added.

New York’s plan to raise $33B for MTA in taxes, fees kept secret as Hochul passes buck to pols

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has remained tight-lipped about the state’s plan to raise $33 billion for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) through taxes and fees. In a recent press conference, Hochul deflected questions about the specifics of the plan, instead passing the responsibility to state lawmakers.

The MTA, which operates New York City’s subway and bus system, has been facing financial struggles in recent years, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to address the agency’s funding shortfall, the state has proposed a series of new taxes and fees, including a potential congestion pricing scheme for drivers entering Manhattan.

However, details about the plan have been kept under wraps, raising concerns among New Yorkers about how the additional revenue will be raised and who will bear the brunt of the costs. Critics have also raised questions about the lack of transparency surrounding the plan, with some accusing Hochul of passing the buck to state lawmakers rather than taking responsibility for the decision.

As the state continues to grapple with the implications of the plan, many are calling for greater transparency and accountability in the decision-making process. With billions of dollars at stake, New Yorkers are demanding answers about how the MTA will be funded and what impact it will have on residents across the state.
