  • New Ferry Named After Jackie Robinson Celebrates Legacy

On January 29, 2025, New York Waterway proudly christened its latest ferry, aptly named the “Jackie Robinson,” honoring the legendary baseball player and civil rights pioneer. The 500-passenger ferry is scheduled to begin operations on January 31, providing additional transportation options during the temporary closure of the Hoboken PATH station. This ceremony not only highlights the ferry’s practical role but also pays tribute to Robinson’s enduring legacy.

At the christening ceremony held in Weehawken, New Jersey, Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter, Sonya Pankey, expressed her family’s gratitude for such recognition. “We are honored to have something like this to really honor [our grandfather’s] legacy. But I hope the next generation will really learn and embrace what we did for society and baseball,” she said. Her words reflect the family’s commitment to keeping Robinson’s memory alive, both on and off the baseball field.

The legacy of Jackie Robinson, the pioneering African American baseball player who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, is being honored in a unique way. A new ferry has been named after Robinson, celebrating his contributions to the world of sports and civil rights.

The Jackie Robinson Ferry will transport passengers across the water with the same grace and determination that Robinson displayed on the baseball field. This tribute serves as a reminder of the impact that one individual can have on society, inspiring others to break down barriers and strive for equality.

As passengers board the ferry, they will be reminded of Robinson’s courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who continue to fight for equality and inclusion.

The Jackie Robinson Ferry is more than just a mode of transportation – it is a symbol of hope, progress, and unity. Let us honor Robinson’s memory by continuing to work towards a more just and equitable world for all.

  • Bells Ferry ES Second, Third Grade relocating; Ragsdale removes Dugard memoir

    By Rebecca Gaunt

Second and third graders at Bells Ferry Elementary in Marietta will attend school at Chalker Elementary starting in August 2025 for the duration of a major construction update to the main building.

Cobb County Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said it was necessary due to space constraints. The relocation is expected to last for two years, with completion slated for 2027.

“With the implementation of this project, there will be some growing pains. Land is limited at Bells Ferry,”  he said.

Detailed information went out to families Friday, according to the superintendent.

Transportation will not be affected. Students will be picked up at their regular bus stops and driven to Chalker.

Winter Construction is managing the project, which was approved by voters as part of the 2021 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

Bells Ferry serves 750 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the district website. It was built in 1972.

Chalker Elementary School in Kennesaw is less than three miles from Bells Ferry.

    Book Removals

Ragsdale announced at Thursday’s work session that two additional books have been pulled from all Cobb schools, bringing the total to 34.

Students will no longer have access to “Triangles” by Ellen Hopkins or “A Stolen Life: A Memoir” by Jaycee Dugard in school media centers.

Three other titles by Hopkins were previously pulled from circulation in the district: “Crank,” “Tricks,” and “Identical.”

Read more here: Cobb superintendent announces six more ‘lewd’ books pulled from circulation – Cobb Courier

Ragsdale didn’t detail the reasons for pulling “Triangles,” but he did talk at length about Dugard’s memoir. The book tells of her experience being kidnapped in 1991 and held for 18 years by her captors.

“It is extremely difficult to imagine a human being treating another human being, especially a child, in such a tragic manner. The reason “A Stolen Life” is being removed from general circulation are those very graphic descriptions of the rapes and other sexual abuse she endured, as well as language used throughout the book…it is the decision of a parent when or if their child has access to this material,” he said.

Ragsdale referenced a Marietta Daily Journal article “Sex Trafficking Pipeline Runs Through Cobb” by Hunter Riggall, He said he was shocked to learn from it that 91% of children who are being trafficked attend public school at some point while being victimized.

“Moving forward, our partnership with Servius will allow us to identify indicators suggesting human and child trafficking occurring in Cobb County, which then will allow us to focus intervention efforts to make human trafficking in Cobb a difficult crime to commit,” he said.

Servius is the intelligence gathering company whose partnership with CCSD was announced at the October school board meeting. The secretive nature of the presentation, during which the presenters declined to provide the name of the company or full names of the staff, has drawn criticism in the community. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution broke the story the same month regarding who was actually behind the company: a former Navy Seal named Rob Sarver who previously provided security for the wealthy on vacation through the company.

Rebecca Gaunt earned a degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in education from Oglethorpe University. After teaching elementary school for several years, she returned to writing. She lives in Marietta with her husband, son, two cats, and a dog. In her spare time, she loves to read, binge Netflix and travel.

Bells Ferry ES Second, Third Grade relocating; Ragsdale removes Dugard memoir

Bells Ferry Elementary School in Acworth, Georgia has announced that its second and third grade classes will be relocating to a new building as part of a renovation project. The move is expected to take place at the end of the current school year, with students and staff returning to the original building once the renovations are complete.

In other news, Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, North Carolina has made the decision to remove Jaycee Dugard’s memoir, “A Stolen Life,” from its library shelves. The controversial decision comes after concerns were raised about the book’s graphic content and mature themes, prompting school officials to review the book’s appropriateness for its student body.

Stay tuned for more updates on these developing stories.

  • Bells Ferry ES 2nd and 3rd graders to relocate to Chalker ES

Bells Ferry ES 2nd and 3rd graders to relocate to Chalker ES

Second- and third-grade classes at Bells Ferry Elementary School will be temporarily relocated to Chalker Elementary School starting in August due to a construction project.

The Cobb County School District announced Thursday that parents of those students have been notified of the details of the relocation, and released renderings of the project.

The relocation is expected to take two years, to the start of the 2027-28 school year, as Bells Ferry will be undergoing a rebuild of its main campus building on Bells Ferry Road at Piedmont Road.

Like the rebuilt and relocated Eastvalley Elementary School, the new Bells Ferry campus will feature a multi-story main building.

A final construction price hasn’t been announced, but the contractor, Winter Construction Co. of Atlanta, was announced in June. The funding will come from the current SPLOST VI sales tax for Cobb schools.

During a Cobb Board of Education meeting Thursday, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said the relocation of the students is necessary due to space constraints at Bells Ferry, which opened in 1972 and has more than 750 students.

While the project is underway, there will be portable classrooms on the Bells Ferry campus.

The oldest portion of the building will be rebuilt, and the school will get upgraded technology and communications equipment, including new computing and interactive devices for classrooms, telephone systems and replacing two playground areas.

Ragsdale said transportation will not be affected for the Bells Ferry students relocated to Chalker. Their usual bus will pick them up and drop them off as they currently do for Bells Ferry.

Ferry back in history with ‘Titanic: An Immersive Voyage’

The immersive voyage was created by John Zaller, a producer who runs Exhibition Hub Atlanta. Earlier this year, he explained the reason for his interest in this part of history to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“For me, it’s the personal stories of the people on board,” he said. “The thing that makes it super fascinating is it’s a modern-day Greek tragedy, a mythological retelling of the human experience. It continues to teach us lessons and draws us in. We also want to capture the myth and lore surrounding the story.”

Allow about 60 to 90 minutes for your visit. Ticket prices vary by the day you’re visiting and are $33 for Friday, Dec. 27-Sunday, Dec. 29. expo-titanic.com

Check out Friday’s Go Guide for more things to do this weekend.

Step back in time and experience the grandeur and tragedy of the Titanic with ‘Titanic: An Immersive Voyage’. This unique ferry ride takes you on a journey through history, allowing you to witness the opulence of the ship and the heart-wrenching events that led to its demise.

As you board the ferry, you will be transported to the early 20th century, where you will be greeted by period-appropriate decor and costumes. You will have the chance to explore the various decks of the Titanic, from the luxurious first-class cabins to the bustling engine room.

But the true highlight of this experience is the recreation of the ship’s fateful voyage. As you navigate through the icy waters, you will witness the tragic events that led to the sinking of the Titanic, from the collision with the iceberg to the frantic efforts to evacuate the ship.

‘Titanic: An Immersive Voyage’ offers a unique and moving experience that allows you to step into the shoes of those who were onboard the ill-fated ship. Don’t miss your chance to embark on this unforgettable journey back in time.
