  • Lillard eyes three-peat, headlines NBA 3-point contest field

Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard has his eyes on a three-peat.

The sharpshooting guard headlines the eight-man field in the 3-point contest at next week’s NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco

The two-time defending champion will be joined by New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, rising Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland, Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro, Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield, Brooklyn Nets forward Cameron Johnson and LA Clippers guard Norman Powell.

With a win, Lillard can become the first player since Craig Hodges (1990-92) to win the contest three times in a row. Larry Bird also captured three consecutive titles from 1986 to 1988.

Last year, Lillard racked up 26 out of a possible 40 points in the final round of the contest which also featured 2022 3-point contest winner Karl-Anthony Towns and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young. He drilled four buckets in a row on the second-to-last rack of balls and jogged to the final rack needing only one more basket for the victory. He missed his next four shots from the corner, before splashing the game winner on his final attempt.

Lillard’s second straight title made him the first back-to-back champion since Jason Kapono (2007, 2008), a feat also accomplished by Bird, Hodges, Mark Price and Peja Stojakovic.

With the NBA All-Star weekend quickly approaching, all eyes are on Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard as he sets his sights on a third consecutive victory in the 3-point contest. Lillard, known for his deadly accuracy from beyond the arc, will face stiff competition from a talented field of shooters including Steph Curry, Devin Booker, and Joe Harris.

The 3-point contest has long been a fan favorite event during All-Star weekend, showcasing the best shooters in the league as they go head-to-head in a thrilling display of long-range marksmanship. Lillard’s back-to-back wins in 2020 and 2021 have solidified his status as one of the top shooters in the league, but he will need to bring his A-game to fend off challengers hungry for the title.

As the anticipation builds for the 3-point contest, fans can expect a high-energy competition filled with jaw-dropping shots and intense rivalries. Will Lillard make history with a three-peat, or will a new champion emerge to steal the spotlight? Tune in to find out as the NBA’s best shooters battle it out for 3-point supremacy.

  • 2025 WM Phoenix Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions by golf model that’s nailed 13 majors

Scottie Scheffler has had tremendous success at the WM Phoenix Open in recent years. The No. 1 ranked player in the world recorded his first career PGA Tour victory at this event in 2022 and also finished on top of the leaderboard in 2023. Scheffler, who’s coming off a T-9 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, will headline the 2025 WM Phoenix Open field, which also features major champions like Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama. The 2025 WM Phoenix Open first-round tee times at TPC Scottsdale begin on Thursday at 9:20 a.m. ET.

According to the latest 2025 WM Phoenix Open odds, Scheffler is the 3-1 favorite (risk $100 to win $300) to finish on top of the leaderboard. He’s followed by Thomas (11-1), Matsuyama (16-1) and Sungjae Im (20-1) on the PGA odds board. Defending champion Nick Taylor tied the course record (60) in the first round last season and is +6000 (risk $100 to win $6,000) to be the leader after Round 1. Rickie Fowler won this event in 2019 and is +450 (risk $100 to win $450) to finish inside the top 10. Before locking in your 2025 WM Phoenix Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters — its third Masters in a row — and last year’s PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed its sports betting picks could have seen massive returns on betting apps like FanDuelDraftKings and Fanatics

Now that the 2025 WM Phoenix Open field is locked in, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

    2025 WM Phoenix Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2025 WM Phoenix Open: Matsuyama, a two-time winner of this event and one of the top favorites, fails to finish on top of the leaderboard and barely cracks the top five. Matsuyama won this event in 2016 and 2017 and has already recorded a victory on the PGA Tour this season at The Sentry in January.

However, Matsuyama has finished T-32 or worse in his last two starts on tour and hasn’t cracked the top 20 at TPC Scottsdale since 2022. He also enters this week’s event ranked 102nd in greens in regulation percentage (68.75%) and 133rd in driving accuracy (56.14%), which doesn’t bode well at a course like TPC Scottsdale. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the 2025 WM Phoenix Open field. See who else to fade here.

Another surprise: Sepp Straka, a 45-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

Straka secured a victory at The American Express earlier this year and is coming off a T-7 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 31-year-old is one of the best ball-strikers on tour, ranking fifth in greens in regulation percentage (78.13%) and 12th in strokes gained: approach to green (1.075). He also ranks third in birdie average (6.00), fourth in scoring average (67.31) and fifth in driving accuracy (75.88%). Those impressive stats, plus his long odds, make him a strong value pick for your 2025 WM Phoenix Open bets. See who else to pick here

How to make 2025 WM Phoenix Open picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 45-1 or longer who will make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.

Who will win the 2025 WM Phoenix Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the 2025 WM Phoenix Open odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected leaderboard, all from the model that’s nailed 13 golf majors, including the last three Masters and three majors in 2024.

  • Carlos Alcaraz tries for his first indoor title, Elena Rybakina pushes restart, and a U.S. field dominates in Texas

Elena Rybakina pushes restart, this time without Goran Ivanisevic

The early days of January looked a new dawn for Rybakina. She had hired a new and experienced coach in Goran Ivanisevic, and, just as importantly, seemed to have parted ways with her old coach, Stefano Vukov, who has been provisionally suspended from the WTA Tour after allegations of abuse.

But any thoughts of a fresh start faded quickly, when she asked Vukov to join her in Australia. Soon Goran was gone, and Rybakina was knocked out of the year’s first Slam by eventual champ Madison Keys.

This week, she’ll make her return, coach-free, at the Abu Dhabi Open, the first event of February’s sandy swing through the Saudi peninsula. Rybkina is the top seed, followed by Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina. Badosa’s semifinal in Melbourne makes her a player to watch again.

Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of the tennis world, is set to compete for his first indoor title at the upcoming tournament. The young Spaniard has been making waves on the ATP tour with his impressive performances and is eager to add another trophy to his collection.

Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina is looking to push the restart button on her season after a string of disappointing results. The Kazakh player has shown flashes of brilliance in the past and will be hoping to find her form once again as she gears up for the upcoming matches.

In a separate event, a U.S. field dominates in Texas as American players showcase their talent and skills on the court. With a strong contingent of players representing the United States, fans can expect some thrilling matches and fierce competition as the players battle it out for the title.

Data analytics can also help organizations identify areas for improvement in their disaster recovery plans, ensuring that they are always prepared for any eventuality.

As the field of disaster recovery continues to evolve, it is essential for organizations to stay ahead of the curve and embrace these trends and innovations. By leveraging cloud-based solutions, virtualization technology, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, businesses can enhance their resilience and ensure that they are prepared for any disaster that may come their way. The evolution of disaster recovery is an ongoing process, and organizations that adapt and innovate will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of an increasingly complex and unpredictable world.

  • India vs England 5th T20I Live Score: Mohammed Shami in; England captain Jos Buttler opts to field vs India

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th T20I: India coach reveals who took the final call on concussion substitute

The selection of Harshit Rana as a “concussion sub” in place of Shivam Dube infuriated England captain Jos Buttler, but India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel defended the decision, claiming that match referee Javagal Srinath made the final call after they presented the young pacer’s name.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir skillfully employed the rules to substitute Mumbai all-rounder Rana, who bowls at early 120 clicks, for Dube, who reached a half-century, when Dube was hit by Jamie Overton off the penultimate delivery of the Indian innings.

“As far as I’m aware, Shivam (Dube) obviously took the knock on the head and when he came off the field during the innings break with mild headache symptoms, we took a name forward to the match referee in terms of a suitable substitution.

“From there it’s up to the match referee to make that decision,” Morkel replied when asked about the controversy surrounding Rana.

With a match remaining, the pacer helped India win by 15 runs in Pune on Friday night, capping the T20I series. He took 3/33 on his debut.

“Harshit (Rana) was having dinner, had to get himself ready as quick as possible to get onto the field and bowl and I thought he did an excellent job,” Morkel said.

When questioned about Buttler’s criticism of the replacement for not being like-for-like, Morkel avoided the subject.

“You know, it goes to the powers sort of above me (match referee).

“Match referee, he made the decision, you know, we can only take the name forward and from there it’s out of our hands. We got the green light to go with that and, you know, we gave it an opportunity,” he said.

The bowling unit’s consistency in execution has greatly impressed the former South African pacer, who joined the Indian team management prior to the home season.

“In our planning we do before games, everybody’s contributing in those conversations. But the main thing at the end of the day is to go out and execute,” Morkel said.

“And I think even if we’re under pressure with ball in hand, like tonight, you know, we were under pressure, defending a total there tonight, it was great character shown by this young group,” he said.

England got off to a fast start with 62 runs in Powerplay, but Varun Chakravarthy, Rana, and Ravi Bishnoi demonstrated their skills by defending a total of 181.

“The way we defended tonight, yeah, I’m just very proud of this team. You know, defending a 180 sort of total on a good wicket with a wet outfield is outstanding work.”

India vs England 5th T20I Live Score Update:

In the highly anticipated 5th T20I match between India and England, England captain Jos Buttler has won the toss and elected to field first. This decision will put the Indian batting line-up to the test as they look to set a competitive total.

In a surprising move, Mohammed Shami has been included in the Indian playing XI for this crucial match. Shami’s pace and accuracy will be key in providing early breakthroughs for the Indian team.

Both teams are coming off impressive performances in the series so far, with the series currently tied at 2-2. The winner of this match will take the series and gain momentum going into the upcoming ODI series.

  • Touching Tractor Tribute: Farmers Bid Farewell to Steve Hamm, a Loyal Lifeline in the Field

A love for tractors and an admiration for John Deere green. That’s how you’d describe Steve Hamm, a John Deere mobile technician for 30 years. A father and grandpa, he was loved by many, as many in the community will tell you he was truly dedicated to his craft.

“Steve was a pioneer for that kind of knowledge. We really depended on him,” says Chris Roberson, general manager of Ag-Power, the John Deere dealership in Richmond, Mo., where Steve worked.

“He was a man of integrity,” says Dennis Estes, who worked with Steve at Ag-Power, but was also Steve’s friend and the pastor at his church. “He had a passion for what he did, and he was a person who served a lot of people.”

As a technician, Steve’s career revolved around service, but even then, Steve went above and beyond time and again.

“He lived to serve,” Roberson says. “He put everyone else above him or before him, and he was on call all the time. Whether it involved work or even personal family matters. He was always able to be reached and counted on.”

“You look at the communities that Steve served, people from small towns and everywhere else who called Steve, if it was 10 at night, Steve took the call,” says Estes.

Estes says for area farmers, Steve was a loyal lifeline in the field, providing a service no matter the time and no matter how challenging the issue was that needed fixed.

“This equipment is so complicated these days. And Steve pursued the passion of always learning,” says Estes. “If there was anything he couldn’t fix, he found out how to fix it, and he wouldn’t quit. He had the passion that made him pursue that until he got it. And I think that’s what really sets him apart.”

Roberson says on paper, Steve was a master technician, which is the highest honor you can receive as a John Deere technician. But he was more than that. Steve had a wealth of knowledge he passed on to others.

A man who dedicated three decades of his life to helping others was remembered in a remarkable way this past week. On a crisp, sunny Tuesday morning, those same farmers who Steve served for all those years found a way to show just how grateful they were.

“I’ve never seen a tribute for somebody that was more compelling probably than that tribute,” Estes says.

Tractor after tractor, combines with their augers out, all lined the road next to the cemetery where Steve would be laid to rest.

“I couldn’t help but think as we were doing the graveside service the effort made by so many people to be there,” Estes says. “As I looked up on the hill at all of the farmers, it was almost as if it was a mist because you could see the moisture in the eyes of so many of these people, many hardened individuals. Farmers who are used to being out in nature and fighting it, whether flood or drought or whatever it is, and through that toughness, they still had those kind of feelings for Steve.”

Farmers who never had the chance to say thank you or goodbye, stepped up to the call this week with a touching tractor tribute.

“He deserved every bit of that tribute. He didn’t ever ask for it. I hope he’s smiling down on us,” Estes says.

The touching tractor tribute was a nod to something Steve loved so much, as he took his final ride.

Today, the farming community is mourning the loss of a beloved member, Steve Hamm, who was not just a farmer, but a loyal lifeline in the field. As a tribute to his memory, fellow farmers came together to bid farewell to Steve in a touching tractor procession.

Steve Hamm was known for his dedication to his farm and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was always ready to share his knowledge and expertise with others, making him a respected figure in the farming community.

In honor of Steve, farmers from all around gathered with their tractors to form a procession that traveled through the fields that Steve once worked. The sight of the tractors lined up in a row, each one bearing a sign or banner in tribute to Steve, was a powerful reminder of the impact he had on those around him.

As the procession made its way through the fields, the sound of the tractors filled the air, a fitting farewell to a man who had spent so much of his life working the land. The tribute was a touching reminder of the bonds that unite farmers and the deep sense of community that exists among those who work the land.

Steve Hamm may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on in the fields he tended and the hearts of those who knew him. The touching tractor tribute was a fitting send-off for a man who will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Steve Hamm.

  • How EA’s $5 billion Sims empire has become a magnet for female talent in a male-dominated field

Good morning! Trump blames DEI for deadly D.C. plane crash, JetBlue’s financial outlook disappoints, and the women-led team behind The Sims celebrates a milestone. Have an amazing weekend.

    – The Sims’s next life stage. Put fans of The Sims in a room or online forum together, and there’s no shortage of game modifications to learn, design hacks to master, and in-game lore to discover. But it won’t be long until the discussion inevitably turns to a dirty not-so-secret among players of all ages, one of every devotee of the game’s rites of passage.

“There’s something really beautiful watching a Sims player meet another Sims player,” says Lyndsay Pearson, vice president of franchise creative for the game. “They eventually admit that they’ve killed somebody.”

Because while from the outside the game may look like a cozy simulacrum of life in the ’burbs, fans flock to it for the creative freedom not only to build out their dream homes, but to build out an entire dream reality, one in which Sims may lie, cheat, steal, and, yes, be murdered to further the player’s desired storyline. And whether done intentionally by, say, removing a pool’s steps after the Sim goes for a dip, or unintentionally via a house fire or meteor strike, killing off a Sim is one of the many elements of the iconic life simulation video game that has helped it become one of the best-selling of all time.

As it celebrates its 25th anniversary on Feb. 4, Pearson and Rachel Franklin, senior vice president at Electronic Arts (EA), recently spoke with me about their careers in game development and what they see for the future of the franchise that has driven over $5 billion in revenue. And they sang the praises of the creativity within the fandom—even if it leads to a character death or two. (Full disclosure: I’ve been a player since the first Sims game for the PC and have “killed” my fair share of Sims.)

Both women are veterans of EA, the game’s publisher, and Pearson loved the game well before she started working there in 2002. In fact, she started her time at EA as a QA tester in college before moving into full time design work. Two decades later, her fingerprints are on every iteration of the game—its most recent release is The Sims 4, though there are many other expansion and game packs—and now leads its long-term creative vision. She has been behind much of players’ beloved lore, like the “What happened to Bella Goth” mystery (spoiler: she was abducted by aliens) that fans new and old obsess over.

Franklin also has decades of experience in game development, first as an engineer and now as the leader of EA’s entire lifestyle entertainment team.

Though gaming is still a male-dominated industry that has plenty of well-documented issues bringing more women into the fold, Pearson and Franklin say The Sims has always been a welcoming home to female talent. Diversity and inclusion are foundational to the game, which allows players to create avatars of themselves—whether true-to-life or dream versions—friends, and family.

“Female leadership has just been part of our DNA from the beginning,” says Pearson of working on the franchise. “We play a really important role, just in the industry, in showing a way a team can work that really builds inclusivity without even thinking about it.”

In fact, EA more broadly has implemented a strategy known as “positive play,” which focuses on creating a community in which people feel welcome while still being themselves. The Sims’ global workforce, with employees of all races, ages, and genders, helps them succeed with their mission, says Franklin.

“I’ve had many experiences where you have a member of a team say, ‘Hey, I can’t make myself in this game,’” she says. “And you need that push, you need that voice, you need somebody on the team saying, ‘Hey, we need to do better.’ That inevitably makes it better for your players.”

Pearson and Franklin promise plenty of surprises for devoted community members to celebrate a quarter century of the game. And of course, there’s The Sims live-action movie to look forward to.

For Franklin, the best part of the game is the safe space the Sims universe offers to players.

“There’s cause and effect and freedom and the ability to create, but there’s also always optimism, and always kind of a way out of the gnarly mess that you may have gotten your Sim into,” she says. While players may kill off their Sims, they can also resurrect them.

In the world of video game development, the Sims franchise has stood out as a shining example of success. With over $5 billion in revenue and a loyal fan base spanning generations, the Sims empire has become a powerhouse in the gaming industry. But what sets the Sims apart from other games is not just its financial success, but also its ability to attract and retain female talent in a field that is often dominated by men.

From its inception, the Sims franchise has been inclusive and diverse, with a strong emphasis on creativity and storytelling. This has created a welcoming environment for women to thrive and excel in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Female developers, designers, writers, and artists have played integral roles in shaping the Sims universe, bringing their unique perspectives and talents to the table.

One of the keys to the Sims’ success in attracting female talent is its focus on inclusivity and representation. The game allows players to create characters and stories that reflect their own experiences, regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation. This commitment to diversity has resonated with both players and developers, creating a supportive and inclusive community within the Sims team.

In addition, EA has made a concerted effort to foster a culture of inclusion and diversity within its workforce. The company has implemented programs and initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality and supporting women in the gaming industry. This commitment to diversity has helped to attract and retain female talent, making the Sims team a magnet for women looking to make their mark in the world of game development.

As the Sims franchise continues to evolve and grow, it will be exciting to see how female talent continues to shape and influence the game. With its inclusive and diverse approach, the Sims empire has set a powerful example for the gaming industry as a whole, proving that success and diversity can go hand in hand.
