  • Lives Lived & Lost: Tiger Bech ’21 Was Joy On and Off the Field

Tiger Bech ’21 had a magnetic personality and a larger-than-life sense of humor. He was described by Princeton football coaches as fearless, and Bech’s teammates gravitated toward him as a source of joy and encouragement on and off the field.

His death in a truck attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day was not only shocking but devastating to family and friends.

“It’s very jarring because he had this like aura of untouchability,” Harrison Caponiti ’23, a Princeton football teammate, tells PAW.

The truck driver, identified by law enforcement as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was an Army veteran. He drove into a crowd with a black ISIS flag on the truck’s rear bumper early on New Year’s Day, killing 14 people and injuring about 30 others. The FBI has stated that the attack was an act of terrorism. Jabbar, 42, was killed in a shootout with police.

Bech was in New Orleans to celebrate New Year’s with fellow Princeton football alumnus Ryan Quigley ’20, who suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack.

A Louisianan, Bech grew up in Lafayette and attended St. Thomas More Catholic High School. He earned all-state honors as a football player.

“He was like a lightning bolt that streaked across all of our lives, with the intensity of his love in the bright light of his personality and laughter,” said his high school position coach Lance Strother in a Facebook post. “He lit up our world and we’ll never forget it.”

Bech majored in sociology and played for the Princeton football team, earning All-Ivy honors as a punt returner in 2017 and 2018, and recording 825 receiving yards during his career as a wide receiver.

Going into the 2018 season, Bech “was part of a group that was arguably one of the strongest in the league and one of the most talented,” says Mark Rosenbaum, the quarterbacks coach for the Princeton football team. In 2018, his first year at Princeton, he was the wide receivers coach, and got to know Bech.

“He grew immensely in his approach to the details and in meetings and practice and everything,” Rosenbaum says. “And I think what defined him as a player is just his toughness and courage.”

Carson Bobo ’23 was a tight end on the football team and remembers looking up to Bech when learning the offense during his freshman year.

“Things are hard when you’re freshmen and you kind of look up to the older guys to guide you. And he was always just having a good time smiling and never took anything too seriously — while he kept the important things important,” says Bobo.

At his funeral service, people spoke about Bech’s love for life, outgoing personality, and how he cherished those around him.

Quigley and Bech worked together at Seaport Global Holdings, an investment company in New York City.

“From the moment that [Bech] joined our firm, he was recognized as a very positive, energetic young man, exceptional in many ways,” says Victor Kurylak ’79, COO of Seaport.

According to multiple people who attended Bech’s wake, the funeral home was nearly overwhelmed by the number of mourners, with a line of people wrapped around the building. “The love that came from the funeral, oh my goodness … this place was packed,” says Bobo.

Some alumni flew into Atlanta and drove eight hours to Lafayette to be there for Bech’s funeral.

“He was a ‘Tiger’ in every way — a ferocious competitor with endless energy, a beloved teammate, and a caring friend,” said head football coach Bob Surace ’90 in a statement. “Our last conversation was about how proud I was of the growth he showed during his time at Princeton and the success he was having after graduation.”

At Bech’s funeral service, his siblings emphasized how his death had brought so many people together in love.

“He was my best friend. My role model. My number one fan. The person I always wanted to grow up and be,” said Jack Bech, Tiger’s younger brother, at the service. Jack Bech is a wide receiver at Texas Christian University.

“He did everything he set out to do this side of heaven, except for watching me live out my dream of playing in the NFL,” Jack Bech said. “But now, he will have the best seat in the house.”

Hope Perry ’24 is PAW’s reporting fellow.

Tiger Bech, a beloved member of the class of 2021, was known for his infectious joy both on and off the field. With a passion for sports and a heart of gold, Tiger touched the lives of all who knew him.

On the field, Tiger was a force to be reckoned with. His speed and agility made him a standout player in both soccer and track, earning him respect and admiration from teammates and opponents alike. But it wasn’t just his athleticism that made Tiger special – it was his positive attitude and unwavering dedication to his team that truly set him apart.

Off the field, Tiger was a true friend to all. His warm smile and kind words could brighten anyone’s day, and his genuine care and concern for others made him a pillar of strength in the community. Whether he was cheering on his friends at a game or lending a listening ear to someone in need, Tiger was always there, ready to offer support and encouragement.

Sadly, Tiger’s life was cut short far too soon. His passing has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched. Let us remember Tiger not for the sorrow of his loss, but for the joy he brought to us all. Rest in peace, Tiger Bech. You will be forever missed.

  • Four Falls of Buffalo, Super Bowl curse, four straight Super Bowl losses, drought, Scott Norwood missed field goal, cursed, Marv Levy, Jim Kelly, documentary

The Buffalo Bills went to four straight Super Bowls – but they aren’t remembered for that feat. Instead, they’re remembered for losing each of them.

Watch every game of the NFL Postseason, including the Super Bowl, live with ESPN on Kayo Sports. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer.

While Josh Allen and his Bills are currently attempting to break the team’s Super Bowl drought, in the early 90s the Bills were the team to beat.

    First Round Playoffs

But unfortunately for Marv Levy’s men, they produced their worst games in each of those four championship matches to go down in history as the NFL’s biggest losers.

“There’s always that – ‘but you didn’t win the Super Bowl’,” Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly said on his legacy on Kayo documentary Four Falls of Buffalo.

And still to this day, the Bills are yet to claim a Super Bowl victory – one of 12 teams in the NFL to never taste that Lombardi Trophy success.

Bills fans will ask: How different could Buffalo’s dynasty be had kicker Scott Norwood’s potential Super Bowl match-winner not sailed wide right in 1991 – the first of the four straight defeats?

What would have happened if assistant Chuck Dickerson hadn’t lit a fire under Washington players with his pre-Super Bowl ‘hog’ taunts in 1992?

Ravens sink Steelers to progress | 00:50

Would Thurman Thomas have made an impact if a member of Harry Connick Jnr’s band did not move his helmet during Super Bowl XXVI – ensuring he missed precious match time looking for it/searching for a replacement?

The Bills of the 1990s could be considered cursed.

Norwood would become the poster boy for Buffalo’s misery – with his missed 47-yard field goal with just eight seconds to play in Super Bowl XXV etched in every NFL fan’s mind as the infamous ‘Wide Right’.

Everything was riding on Norwood’s kick but as Al Michaels famously called it in commentary, it was “no good … wide right” and the Bills were defeated 20-19 in crushing scenes.

The kicker, who would later be dumped by the Bills after their second straight Super Bowl loss – missing the next two defeats, relives the moment in the Four Falls of Buffalo documentary.

“I had expected a very, very positive, exciting result (in the first Super Bowl appearance). To so quickly turn to the other end of the spectrum is really quite an emotional flip-flop,” he said.

“What recollection I would have after would definitely be categorised as a blur.

“I almost relate it to being in some kind of accident where it’s almost shock, the magnitude of it not working out kind of seeping on top of me.

“Sorrow, I guess, and disappointment in letting down teammates that are there on the field of battle with you (were the first emotions).

“I get choked up thinking about it, putting myself back in the situation on the sidelines.”

Kicker gets ‘CRUNCHED’ in Texans return | 00:42

By the time they made their way to a fourth straight Super Bowl in 1994, there was nothing left to give.

“We got together as a team and almost said let’s not go (to a third straight Super Bowl),” Bills star James Lofton said on Four Falls of Buffalo.

“If you lose, you will be the greatest losers of all time,” Buffalo general manager Bill Polian was warned at the time.

The likes of Kelly, Thomas, Bruce Smith and Darryl Talley would all finish their careers without that ultimate victory – despite double digit win seasons in four straight years of dominance (and four straight AFC Championship titles).

“It hurt me then, it still hurts me now,” Thomas says.

“I’m still upset about losing four Super Bowls.

    “I went to all four!”

The Bills were so bad in the championship game that fans dubbed them the acronym Boy I Love Losing Superbowls (BILLS).

Current day Buffalo fans are desperate for their team to be remembered for something other than the four straight Super Bowl losses.

Could Sean McDermott’s men, led from the front by star quarterback Josh Allen, be the ones to do it?

The 2024/25 NFL playoffs begin from January 11, with the Bills taking on the Broncos in the Wildcard Playoff from 5am AEDT.

Watch the Four Falls of Buffalo documentary onKayo.

The Four Falls of Buffalo: The Super Bowl Curse

The Buffalo Bills are known for one of the most infamous streaks in NFL history – four straight Super Bowl losses. This heartbreaking drought, often referred to as the “Super Bowl curse,” has haunted the Bills and their fans for decades.

The first of the four falls came in Super Bowl XXV in 1991, where the Bills faced the New York Giants. With just seconds left in the game, kicker Scott Norwood missed a potential game-winning field goal, sealing a victory for the Giants.

Despite this devastating loss, the Bills returned to the Super Bowl for three consecutive years, only to come up short each time. Led by head coach Marv Levy and quarterback Jim Kelly, the Bills were a dominant force in the AFC, but could never clinch the championship.

The “Four Falls of Buffalo” has become a symbol of perseverance and heartbreak in football history. In 2015, ESPN released a documentary of the same name, chronicling the highs and lows of the Bills’ Super Bowl runs.

Despite the curse that has plagued the Bills for so long, their resilience and determination have made them a beloved team in the hearts of fans. The four falls may have been devastating, but they have also become a defining moment in the history of the Buffalo Bills.

Neeraj Chopra ties knot with Himani Mor: 'Bound by love, happily ever after'

NEW DELHI: Star India javelin thrower and double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra on Sunday revealed that he got married to Himani Mor in an intimate ceremony.
The 27-year-old shared the news of his wedding with photos from the ceremony, taking everyone by surprise.
“Grateful for every blessing that brought us to this moment together. Bound by love, happily ever after,” wrote Neeraj in the post, including the photos.

Himani Mor is from Sonipat and is currently studying in the USA.
Neeraj’s uncle Bhim told PTI that the marriage took place in the country and the couple has left for honeymoon.
“Yes, the marriage took place in India two days back. I can’t tell the place where it took place,” Bhim told from his village at Khandra near Panipat in Haryana.
“The girl is from Sonipat and she is studying in the US. They have left the country for honeymoon and I am not aware of the places where they are going. We wanted to keep it like that,” said Bhim, who stays with the Olympic double medallist at Khandra.
The wedding follows Neeraj’s remarkable achievement of winning his second Olympic medal, a silver, at the Paris Games.
Back in 2021, Neeraj made history as the first Indian to secure an individual gold medal in a track and field event at the Olympics.
Neeraj, who won a gold in Tokyo Olympics and a silver in the Paris Game, was earlier training in South Africa after he roped in world record holder javelin legend Jan Zelezny of Czech Republic.

Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw, has tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Himani in an intimate ceremony. The couple exchanged vows in the presence of their close friends and family members in a private ceremony.

Neeraj Chopra, who shot to fame after winning India’s first-ever gold medal in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics, looked dashing in a traditional Indian outfit while his bride Himani looked stunning in a beautiful bridal attire.

The couple has been dating for a few years now and their relationship has been the talk of the town. Neeraj Chopra and Himani’s wedding was a much-awaited event and fans and well-wishers have been showering the couple with love and blessings.

The wedding was a private affair with only close friends and family members in attendance, keeping in mind the current situation due to the ongoing pandemic. However, the couple is planning to host a grand reception for their friends and well-wishers once the situation gets better.

We wish Neeraj Chopra and Himani a lifetime of happiness and love as they start this new chapter of their lives together. Congratulations to the happy couple!

  • Out-of-order Tropicana Field displaces St. Petersburg events beyond Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays aren’t the only ones unable to use Tropicana Field in 2025.

In addition to baseball games, the Trop also hosts home and boat shows, gymnastics meets and other events that drive tourism in the off-season. The WWE Royal Rumble last year broke attendance records.

Roughly 40 to 50 planned events this year were displaced when Hurricane Milton tore off the Trop’s roof, City Council member Copley Gerdes estimated. Some of those events may look to venues in other cities or counties and take the tourism dollars with them.

“There’s definitely been some impacts from that standpoint,” said Craig Campbell, director of community and brand engagement for Visit St. Petersburg-Clearwater. The publicly funded agency markets travel to Pinellas County.

As a deal to build a new $1.3 billion stadium for the Rays is in limbo, so is what will happen with the Trop. It needs at least $56 million in repairs yet is scheduled for demolition to make way for construction. Fans will go across the bay to Tampa to watch the Rays play at Tampa’s Steinbrenner Field in 2025.

It’s not clear how much could be lost in tourism dollars. Gerdes, who is also a member of the county’s tourism development council, said during a meeting Tuesday that 60 to 75 events are held in and around the Trop every year. He noted that the Trop’s damage drove the Savannah Bananas baseball stunt team, which had sold out the upper deck at the Trop for two dates, to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The team also added a Miami date, which “doesn’t help us,” he said.

Rays President Brian Auld said the Trop’s damage “wasn’t just a blow to the Rays but to our entire community, which relies on this venue for more than baseball — hosting graduations and other cherished events.” He added, “We’re committed to working hand-in-hand with the city to restore Tropicana Field and bring baseball and community events back to St. Petersburg.”

Tim Keckler, president and CEO of Lightning City Gymnastics in Lutz, has hosted the Gasparilla Classic at the Trop for 23 years. He said it’s the biggest gymnastics meet in the country and had 7,300 athletes from 40 states and 14 countries signed up for this year’s meet.

Keckler said he received a letter a week after the hurricanes that the Trop would not be available. By that point, 2,500 hotel rooms were booked, he said. The meet will now be held in February at the Orlando Convention Center.

“There was a good 10 teams that canceled because they love St. Pete,” Keckler said.

Visit St. Pete-Clearwater spokesperson Jason Latimer said the Savannah Bananas and the Gasparilla Classic were estimated to each have an economic impact of $10 million.

Pinellas County Schools holds about 20 high school graduations at the Trop and had to scramble to make alternative plans. The BayCare Sound in Clearwater will host most of its graduations next year, with some of the county’s most northern schools heading to the University of South Florida’s Yuengling Center.

Clearwater Mayor Bruce Rector said at the meeting that a lot of visitors attending events at Raymond James will end up staying in Clearwater Beach, offsetting some of the loss of events moving to Hillsborough County. The Savannah Bananas’ move to the larger Raymond James stadium allowed it to sell more tickets, which could mean more tourism in the area, he said.

“I think there’s some shifting that should lessen,” Rector said.

Some events are still hoping to use the Trop’s parking lots, which are available through April. Last week, St. Petersburg’s director of events recruitment and management sent an email to the Rays asking for guidance on whether the parking lots were available for events.

”All my event friends looking to use your parking lots are waiting to hear if there will be any availability in 2025,” Tony Leno wrote.

The Skyway 10K, a 6.2-mile race over the Sunshine Skyway bridge, has been staged out of Tropicana Field every March for the past few years. This year’s race has been delayed because of uncertainty about the Trop being available, a spokesperson said.

The Trop’s closure has also put kinks in a sponsorship deal to use the Trop to advertise Pinellas County tourism.

The head of marketing for Visit St. Pete-Clearwater grew frustrated in November at the lack of communication from the Rays, despite having a yearly $625,000 sponsorship deal to advertise Pinellas County tourism on signs and branding at the Trop.

Chief Marketing Officer Steve Grimes told the Rays he was surprised “no one thought it’d be a good idea“ to reach out to discuss how the agency’s sponsorship would be affected by the Rays playing at Steinbrenner Field.

“I would have thought, as (a) significant Rays partner, there would have been some outreach about all the changes for next season, regardless of the stadium issues that are above all our pay grades,” Grimes wrote in an email to the Rays on Nov. 20, at the height of tensions between the Rays and Pinellas County. “Clearly the 2025 season will not be as we all imagined when we put together the sponsorship deal before the ‘24 season and I would have appreciated a conversation before now.”

Grimes said communications have since improved and Visit St. Pete-Clearwater and the Rays are working out how to advertise at Steinbrenner.

Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays, has recently been deemed out-of-order, forcing the displacement of several events in St. Petersburg.

The sudden closure of the stadium has left many residents and event organizers scrambling to find alternative venues for their upcoming events. This has caused a ripple effect throughout the community, with events being postponed or relocated at the last minute.

The impact of Tropicana Field’s closure extends beyond just the Rays’ games. Concerts, conventions, and other major events that were scheduled to take place at the stadium have been forced to find new homes, causing frustration and inconvenience for both attendees and organizers.

As the city works to address the issues at Tropicana Field and find a solution, it is clear that the repercussions of the stadium’s closure will be felt for some time. In the meantime, St. Petersburg residents and visitors are left to navigate the challenges of finding new venues for their events in the midst of this unexpected disruption.

This comes after Ball was seen performing the song during a soundcheck hours before kickoff at Ford Field.

Before starting a burgeoning music career, Ball played in the NBA G-League and in Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Professional in Mexico. He was a member of the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets organizations during his time in the G-League.

Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Ball has signed a deal with Def Jam and Universal Music Group worth up to $13 million.

The Lions finished the 2024 season with a 15-2 record and a Week 18 victory over the then-14-2 Minnesota Vikings sealed the top seed and a bye into the Divisional Round.

In a recent video that surfaced online, LiAngelo Ball was seen performing his hit song ‘Tweaker’ at Ford Field before the Lions faced off against the Commanders. The crowd was hyped up as Ball delivered an energetic performance, showcasing his musical talents to the delight of fans in attendance.

Jahmyr Gibbs has come into his own as one of the most dynamic young running backs in the league. Empowering the Detroit Lions offense, Gibbs is a regular highlight on the field. However, his surging popularity has led to us finding the inside scoop on the more personal side of his life. Let’s take a look at everything we know about Gibbs, from his relationship to his hobbies.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ Relationship With Nicole Anderson

An Illinois native and Millikin University product, Nicole Anderson got her Bachelor’s degree in social work and is now a prominent member of the real estate world.

Working for Keller Williams North Shore West in her hometown, she is also very active on social media, garnering over 111K followers, and officially earning the influencer tag as well. Going through her social media posts, one can see many glimpses of her life, particularly of many world travels.

Half-Korean and half-Swedish, Anderson is a common sight at Detroit games, cheering Gibbs on from the crowds. One such moment was caught on camera after the Lions’ Week 16 game of the 2024 regular season.

A spectacular outing from Gibbs, as he added 109 yards and scored his 12th rushing touchdown of the season, ended with a shared moment between the couple.

Locking eyes with Anderson, Gibbs rushed over to her in the stands, greeting her with a hug. As fans around them cheered the two on, the moment was sweet enough for the NFL to even post it on their social media.

It is unclear when or how the two met. However, looking at her activity on social media, the general estimate that fans have drawn is around early 2023.

Who Are Gibbs’ Parents and Siblings?

Gibbs’ story is one that is sure to bring a tear to anyone’s eye. Born to Neka Willis, the superstar RB had to face early-life struggles and was raised by his grandmother Angela Willis till he was 13.

Growing up in a shelter, Gibbs was eventually adopted by Dusty and Greg Ross, and the three elders played a pivotal role in shaping him to be the man he is today.

Greg and Dusty are proud parents of four sons — Max, John, Ahmaad Tanner, and Jahmyr. Ahmaad Tanner also played football for Austin Peay State University.

Inspired by his family’s love and encouragement, Gibbs flourished in the sport, first shining in high school before making his mark in college.

Gibbs’ biological mother has remained in the background of his public life. However, she, too, contributed to his journey. Simultaneously, though not directly responsible for him, the elder Willis continues to play a part in his life.

Dusty, in particular, is active on social media, frequently expressing her pride and support for Gibbs and his brothers.

Back in 2023, Georgia Tech running backs coach Tashard Choice revealed he wanted to make Gibbs one of the leading voices in the team’s locker room, but he refused, to which Ross said: “He just naturally loves football. He’s just … a little more reserved and a little quieter.”

On the other hand, Gibbs’ adoptive mother was in disbelief when Choice told the family about Gibbs’ potential.

She said: “You’re thinking, is this just somebody else blowing smoke up our butt like everybody else? But we were big football fans and knew how good (Gibbs) was. Here was a coach who played at the highest level, telling us what we’d been seeing. I’ll remember that call as long as I live.”

    What Is Gibbs’ Net Worth?

Represented by Todd France and Ryan Williams of Athletes First, Gibbs signed a four-year, $17,845,130 contract with the Lions. He received a $9,978,276 signing bonus and is fully guaranteed, with an average annual salary of $4,461,283.

In 2024, the Lions RB will earn a base salary of $915,000 and a roster bonus of $646,143. His cap hit will be $4,055,712, and his dead cap value will be around $14,600,561. Being a first-round pick, the Lions will entertain his fifth-year option down the road.

Gibbs’ net worth is estimated at around $8 million. Most of this value is attributed to his rookie contract with the Lions. In addition to his NFL earnings, Gibbs has endorsement deals with brands such as Caktus AI and Leaf Trading Cards.

Before transitioning to the NFL, he also collaborated with brands like Nike, Ashley Furniture, and Party City. He boasted a NIL valuation of $741,000 (as per On3 ).

What Interests Jahmyr Gibbs Outside of Football?

Jahmyr Gibbs might be one of the most talented players on the football field. But, he is a man of many talents, extending far beyond the length and breadth of the gridiron.

A self-proclaimed foodie, Gibbs likes to cook for himself from time to time. According to the official Detroit Lions page, his favorite meal is Chicken Alfredo.

Beyond cooking, he is a huge fan of the movies, unable to choose a favorite one in lieu of his extensive knowledge from watching a gigantic number of them.

However, where sports are concerned, Gibbs is a true fan of combat, and the UFC in particular. He has repeatedly stated his love for Jon Jones, who he claims is his favorite athlete and the person he’d like the most to meet.

But, his love for the combat arena goes well beyond just fan-following. The RB believes that he would have built a career in the UFC if he had not followed his childhood passion and ingrained love for football he got from the Ross’.

Why Is Gibbs Called Sonic and Jah?

In case you haven’t caught the most-watched team in the 2024 season, the Detroit Lions thrive with the one-two punch of Gibbs and David Montgomery at the running back spot.

Their dynamic style has become a sight to behold for the No. 1 ranked offense in the league, according to PFN’s Offense+ metric. But it has also made them fan favorites who are more commonly referred to as the legendary speedster duo, Sonic & Knuckles.

Deriving from the ever-popular Sonic the Hedgehog series, Sonic used his speed and quickness whereas Knuckles relies on brute force and power.

Gibbs is more known for his agility, speed, and dual-threat capability as a rusher and receiver out of the backfield, whereas Montgomery is known more for his downhill running style and power-rushing prowess.

The situation became so popular that CBS even filmed a commercial of the two with the Sonic the Hedgehog team.

The Jah nickname, a shortened version of his name, has been around since he first moved into the Ross household. While the exact origins are unknown but the Lions roster page still lists it as his nickname.

But beyond the laughs, Gibbs has become one of the most dependable offensive weapons in the entire league. In Week 18, he broke the Lions’ franchise record for most touchdowns in a season with 20 total touchdowns.

He ran for 1,412 yards on just 250 carries while being targeted 52 times as a receiver for over 500 yards there as well.
