  • What is the fighting in Goma about?

AFP A close up of a pair of hands holding five bullets.AFP

The mineral-rich east of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been dogged by conflict for more than 30 years, since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Numerous armed groups have competed with the central authorities for power and control of the potential fortune in this vast nation.

The instability has sucked in neighbouring countries to devastating effect – notoriously in the 1990s when two huge conflicts, dubbed Africa’s World Wars, resulted in the deaths of millions of people.

    What is happening in Goma?

After a rapid advance in the region, fighters from the M23 rebel group have entered Goma – a major city of more than a million people in the east of DR Congo.

Sitting on the border with Rwanda and the shores of Lake Kivu, it is a vital trading and transport hub that is within reach of mining towns supplying metals and minerals in high demand such as gold, tin and coltan, which is a key component of mobile phones and batteries for electric vehicles.

The rebels say they now control the city, but the Congolese government says its troops still hold some key locations.

UN aid agencies have warned of a major humanitarian crisis with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties and bodies lying on the streets.

    Who are the M23?

The M23 are led by ethnic Tutsis, who say they needed to take up arms to protect the rights of the minority group.

They say that several previous deals to end the fighting have not been respected – they take their name from a peace agreement that was signed on 23 March 2009.

Shortly after its creation in 2012, the M23 rapidly gained territory and seized Goma – acts that were met with international opprobrium and accusations of war crimes and human rights violations.

It was forced to withdraw from Goma, and then suffered a series of heavy defeats at the hands of the Congolese army along with a UN force that saw it expelled from the country.

M23 fighters then agreed to be integrated into the army in return for promises that Tutsis would be protected.

But, in 2021, the group took up arms again, saying the promises had been broken.

Is Rwanda involved in the fighting?

Neighbouring Rwanda has in the past consistently denied that it supported the M23, but ever since 2012 UN experts have accused it of providing weapons, logistical support and even ultimately commanding the rebels.

DR Congo’s government, as well as the US and France, have also identified Rwanda as backing the group. Last year, a UN experts report said that up to 4,000 Rwandan troops were fighting alongside the M23.

In a statement on Sunday, Rwanda did not explicitly deny that it backed the M23 but instead said that the fighting near its border was a “serious threat” to its “security and territorial integrity”.

It added that Rwanda was being scapegoated and blamed the recent fighting on the Congolese authorities, saying they had refused to enter into a dialogue with the M23.

A peace process, mediated by Angola and involving Rwanda and DR Congo, did result in a ceasefire deal last year, however that soon fell apart and fighting resumed.

What is the connection with Rwanda?

The origin of the current fighting can partly be traced back to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

About 800,000 people – the vast majority from the Tutsi community – were slaughtered by ethnic Hutu extremists.

The genocide ended with the advance of a force of Tutsi-led rebels commanded by Paul Kagame, who is now president.

Fearing reprisals, an estimated one million Hutus then fled across the border to what is now DR Congo. This stoked ethnic tensions as a marginalised Tutsi group in the east – the Banyamulenge – felt increasingly under threat.

Rwanda’s army twice invaded DR Congo, saying it was going after some of those responsible for the genocide, and worked with members of the Banyamulenge and other armed groups.

After 30 years of conflict, one of the Hutu groups, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which includes some of those responsible for the Rwandan genocide, is still active in eastern DR Congo.

Rwanda describes the FDLR as a “genocidal militia” and says its continued existence in the DR Congo’s east threatens its own territory.

It accuses the Congolese authorities of working with the FDLR – accusations which DR Congo denies.

Rwanda is unlikely to stay out of DR Congo unless it is satisfied that the FDLR is no longer a threat to itself, or to the Tutsi communities in eastern DR Congo.

However, it is widely accused of using the conflict as a way to profit from eastern DR Congo’s mineral wealth.

What are the UN peacekeepers doing?

A UN peacekeeping mission has been in place since 1999. The current force – known as Monusco – is made up of more than 10,000 troops.

However, of these, only the Force Intervention Brigade is allowed to carry out offensive operations against armed groups. It was this force that helped defeat the M23 in 2013.

Monusco has been the target of anger from ordinary Congolese who see it as failing to do its job. President Félix Tshisekedi, deeming the mission a failure, had asked it to leave by the end of last year.

But the departure was delayed and in December the mission was extended for another year.

The Southern African Development Community (Sadc), a regional grouping of 16 countries, has also deployed a military force to eastern DR Congo, but it has been unable to halt the rebels.

South Africa said 13 of its soldiers had been killed in clashes with rebels as they were trying to stop the advance on Goma. Three Malawian soldiers have also been killed.

The UN said that Uruguay had lost one of its soldiers who was part of the Monusco force.

The fighting in Goma, a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the result of longstanding political and ethnic tensions in the region. The conflict has been fueled by competition for control over the region’s rich mineral resources, as well as power struggles between various armed groups and the Congolese government.

The fighting in Goma has been marked by violence, human rights abuses, and displacement of civilians. Armed groups, including rebel forces and government troops, have engaged in brutal tactics such as mass killings, rape, and looting.

The international community has struggled to address the root causes of the conflict and bring about a lasting peace in Goma. Efforts to broker peace agreements and disarm armed groups have had limited success, and the situation remains volatile.

It is crucial for the international community to continue supporting efforts to end the fighting in Goma and address the underlying issues that have fueled the conflict. Only through sustained diplomatic engagement, humanitarian assistance, and support for peacebuilding initiatives can the people of Goma hope for a future free from violence and instability.

  • Third-Ranked Women’s Hoops Ships Up To Boston – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — No. 3 Notre Dame (16-2, 7-0) will play the first of three consecutive road games starting Thursday, as the Irish head to Chestnut Hill to play Boston College (12-8, 3-4).

The Irish have won 11 consecutive games dating back to Dec. 5, and the offense is beginning to fire on all cylinders with both Maddy Westbeld and Hannah Hidalgo back in the starting lineup.

After missing two games against Clemson and Georgia Tech with an ankle sprain, Hidalgo returned to the court Sunday night against SMU and recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Front court mate Olivia Miles also had a double-double, notching 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. It was the 25th double-double of her storied career. No other Notre Dame guard has had more than 17.

Notre Dame continues to dominate the national rankings as a team. The Irish rank in the top 10 in the country in scoring offense and rebounds, assists and blocks per game. Notre Dame also leads the nation with a 41.3 success rate from beyond the arc, led by Miles who is shooting 44.8 percent from deep, a more than 20 percent increase from her average over the first three years of her career.

The Eagles are winners of back-to-back ACC games, edging Miami by 4 points last Thursday and dominating Syracuse by 41 on Sunday. Four Boston College players scored in double figures in the win, including 22 points from veteran Dontavia Waggoner and 21 from Teya Sidberry. The Eagles knocked down 10 triples after 12 against Miami, marking the first time since 2019 that they had 10 or more 3-pointers in back-to-back games. That charge against Syracuse was led by T’yana Todd, who went 4-5 from deep.

On the season, Boston College sits in the middle of the ACC in both scoring offense (ninth) and scoring defense (11th). They do an excellent job passing the ball, averaging 16.5 assists per game (fourth). Kaylah Ivey ranks second in the conference with 6.1 assists per game, trailing only Miles (7.1). Ivey has an assist/turnover ratio of 3.9, which leads the ACC.

Thursday’s game will air on ACCNX and tips off at 7 p.m. Notre Dame is 30-9 all-time against Boston College and has won the last five meetings.

  • Cal Fire explains strategies for fighting fires near the U.S.-Mexico border

CBS 8 spoke with Cal Fire San Diego on how crews battle fires that happen on the Mexico side of the U.S.-Mexico border.

SAN DIEGO — South of the U.S.-Mexico border, Tijuana saw a blanket of thick smoke Tuesday. With Tijuana just miles from San Diego, CBS 8 spoke to Cal Fire Capt. Robert Johnson about their response when it comes to fires near the border.

“We work with firefighters in Mexico,” Johnson said. “We actually have liaisons that communicate regularly between the firefighters in Mexico, and there have been multiple circumstances that our firefighters have went into Mexico to assist on fires as well.”

Johnson emphasized that each situation is assessed individually, and the response depends on where the fire is located and the direction it’s moving.

“If it is determined to be in Mexico, there are different types of responses we can send,” Johnson said. “Sometimes we’ll send a single engine just as a smoke check, to go investigate to kind of [get] a more accurate location of where the fire is, how close to the U.S. border it is and if it’s going to be a threat.”

Cal Fire has several tools to monitor and respond to fires, including the use of cameras. The cameras can help crews keep a close eye on fires throughout the state and into Mexico.

“We utilize cameras that are through Alert California and their partnership with Alert California and UCSD,” Johnson said.

Artificial Intelligence technology can also help crews spot potential fires.

“The AI technology is able to detect anomalies as they’re scanning,” Johnson said. “They are continually rotating and looking for anomalies. In the event it locates an anomaly, it will mark that, and someone can review it to review if that is smoke.”

Johnson recommends community members sign up for Alert San Diego and the Genasys Protect application.

Cal Fire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, recently shared insights into their strategies for fighting fires near the U.S.-Mexico border. With the region facing unique challenges due to the rugged terrain and proximity to international boundaries, Cal Fire has developed specialized tactics to effectively combat wildfires in this area.

One of the key strategies employed by Cal Fire is collaboration with Mexican firefighting agencies. By working together and sharing resources, both countries can better respond to and contain fires that cross the border. This partnership allows for a coordinated and efficient approach to firefighting efforts, ensuring that fires are contained quickly and effectively.

In addition to international collaboration, Cal Fire also emphasizes the importance of community outreach and education. By educating residents about fire prevention and preparedness, they can help reduce the risk of wildfires and ensure that communities are better equipped to respond in the event of a fire. This proactive approach is crucial in the fight against wildfires near the border.

Furthermore, Cal Fire utilizes advanced technology and aerial resources to aid in firefighting efforts. Drones, helicopters, and other aircraft are deployed to provide real-time information and support to firefighters on the ground. This technology allows for more accurate mapping of fires and helps to guide strategic decision-making during firefighting operations.

Overall, Cal Fire’s strategies for fighting fires near the U.S.-Mexico border highlight the importance of collaboration, education, and innovation in wildfire management. By employing these tactics, Cal Fire is better equipped to protect communities and natural resources in this challenging region.

  • Ilona Maher Jokes ‘Stop Fighting Over Me’ After Breaking Nose

Rugby star Ilona Maher is laughing through the pain as she continues to recover from a broken nose sustained during her first home start with the Bristol Bears.

The Olympic bronze medalist, 28, was forced to leave the game early on Saturday, Jan. 18 after colliding with three players on the field at Ashton Gate, Essentially Sports reported. Maher showed off the injury on Instagram the following day, giving a thumbs up and smiling as her nose was packed with bloody cotton.

“Just a little knock,” she quipped, later revealing that she’d actually broken her nose during the match.

Ilona Majer showed off her broken nose, which she sustained during a Bristol Bears game.

Once the swelling and bruising kicked in, Maher shared a video of her joking about how people will react “on the street to me today [probably].” She wrote, “I’m just assuming this is how today will go.”

“Guys, stop fighting over me. There’s enough to go around,” she said in the clip, bashfully tucking her hair behind her ears. “What? I am a model. Thank you so much. Oh, you’ve already fallen in love? It’ll pass. It’ll pass.”

Jokes aside, Maher is a model, having appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit‘s digital issue last August.

In an earlier video, captioned, “when people keep asking me if I’m okay but I just broke my nose,” she used audio from her appearance on Dancing with the Stars when Carrie Ann Inaba asked how she was feeling after a tough performance.

Holding an ice pack to her swollen nose, Maher lip-synced “been better, Carrie Ann,” as she pointed her to cut and swollen nose. “No, sir, I am truly not okay,” she wrote in the caption.

A broken nose can take up to six weeks to heal, the Cleveland Clinic says.

Despite her injury, the Bristol Bears beat the Leicester Tigers, 43 – 29.

  • Fighting Illini Earn First Big Ten Road Win With Dominant Victory Over Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Illinois led for the final 38 minutes of play en route to an emphatic 68-54 road win over Indiana at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Thursday night.

Ahead by as many as 15 in the contest, the Fighting Illini improved to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play with their first Big Ten road victory of the campaign.

Four scorers for the Orange and Blue finished in double figures as the Illini recorded their largest margin of victory against the Hoosiers away from home since 1999.

Kendall Bostic marked her return to her home state with a dominant 21-point, eight-rebound performance. A pest in the paint from start to finish, Bostic went 9-for-19 from the field, dished out three assists, and made one block while playing all 40 minutes.

After totaling 11 points in the first quarter, Adalia McKenzie tallied 15 points for her eighth-straight outing in double figures. Three of her five rebounds came on the offensive glass, and she amassed four assists.

Berry Wallace scored in double figures for the second time in her career and for the first time in Big Ten play, pouring in 13 points off the bench. A stretch of five-consecutive points in the fourth quarter swung the momentum back in the Illini’s favor, and the freshman also connected on three 3-pointers, going 3-for-3 from deep, and finished with four rebounds and a steal.

Genesis Bryant ended the night with 12 points while equaling her season-best total with seven assists. She also corralled three rebounds and snatched a steal.

Jasmine Brown-Hagger logged seven points, including five in the fourth quarter, along with four assists, two rebounds, and a steal.

The Hoosiers scored on their first possession of the night, but the Illini did not trail for long. A 19-2 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes gave the visitors a double-digit lead, 19-5. Bostic and McKenzie each logged seven points during that stretch, which saw the Orange and Blue make eight of their first 11 shots from the field.

McKenzie became the game’s first scorer to move into double figures with just over two minutes left in the opening frame. The Illini maintained their double-digit edge, storming into the second quarter with a 25-14 lead.

After Illinois extended its advantage up to 15 by scoring the first four points of the second period, Bostic joined McKenzie in double figures with just over four minutes left in the frame. Bostic ultimately scored the Illini’s final four points of the first half, helping the away side go into the break with a 35-22 advantage.

Bostic and McKenzie led the way offensively for the Orange and Blue, combining for 26 of the Illini’s 35 first-half points. Registering an assist on 11 of 16 made field goals across the first 20 minutes of action, Illinois shot 60% from 3-point range ahead of halftime.

Picking up where she left off, Bostic scored six of the Illini’s first eight points of the second half to allow the Orange and Blue to maintain their double-digit lead. A stretch of seven-straight makes from the Hoosiers reduced the hosts’ deficit down to single digits, 45-37, for the first time in over 20 minutes of game time.

After the Illini took a timeout, Wallace drilled her second 3-pointer less than 15 seconds later to push the visitors’ edge back up to 11 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. A 4-1 Indiana run to close the frame sent the sides into the fourth quarter with Illinois in front, 49-41.

The Hoosiers cut their deficit to four early in the final frame, but a stretch of five-straight points from Wallace carried the Illini’s lead back into double figures. After making a steal and a transition layup, Wallace followed it up by knocking down a 3-pointer less than 20 seconds later. That momentum swing extended the Orange and Blue’s edge to 55-45 with 6:08 left to play.

A buzzer-beating Indiana 3-pointer cut the home side’s deficit back to seven, but Brown-Hagger accounted for the game’s next five points, including a corner three, to re-establish Illinois’ double-digit advantage, 62-50, with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the contest.

Bryant and McKenzie’s back-to-back buckets brought the Orange and Blue back up by 12 with under one minute to go, sealing the team’s first conference road win of the year.

Illinois plays host to a ranked opponent for the third time this season on Sunday, when No. 22 Michigan State makes the trip to Champaign. The opening tipoff between the Fighting Illini and Spartans at State Farm Center is set for 2 p.m. CT on B1G+, with tickets available at the door or online at FightingIllini.com.
