  • Ostapenko makes it a perfect 5-0 against Swiatek to reach Doha final

Ostapenko makes it a perfect 5-0 against Swiatek to reach Doha final

Jelena Ostapenko remains unbeaten against Iga Swiatek. The Latvian improved to 5-0 against the No. 2 seed with an imperious 6-3, 6-1 victory in the Qatar TotalEnergies Open semifinals, ending three-time defending champion Swiatek’s 15-match winning streak at the tournament.

Doha: Draws Scores Order of Play

Ostapenko advances to her 17th career Hologic WTA Tour final, second in Doha and fourth at WTA 1000 level or above (following Doha 2016, Roland Garros 2017 and Miami 2018). Her six-year, 321-day gap since the last of those is the longest between WTA 1000 finals since the format’s inception in 2009. The 27-year-old, who has not dropped a set yet this week, will face another unseeded player, Amanda Anisimova, for her biggest title since Roland Garros 2017. Their only previous meeting also took place in Doha, with Ostapenko taking their 2022 second-round clash 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

A history of dominance: “I was pretty confident that I obviously would beat her, because we’ve played a lot of matches and I know how to play against her,” Ostapenko said in her on-court interview. “I was more focusing on myself and what I had to do. I’m happy with the way I’m handling my emotions this week.”

The 2017 Roland Garros champion had reason to be so self-assured. She is the only active player with a winning head-to-head against Swiatek (with at least two matches played). Including retired players, only one other player can boast such a record — former World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, who was 2-0 against the Pole.

The 70-minute contest was Swiatek’s quickest since she fell 6-0, 6-4 in 69 minutes to Garbiñe Muguruza in the 2021 Dubai second round, and her total of four games won the lowest since she lost 6-2, 6-2 to Elena Rybakina in the 2023 Indian Wells semifinals. You have to go back to 2019 to find a match in which Swiatek has won fewer than four games — a 51-minute 6-0, 6-2 rout in the Birmingham first round at the hands of none other than Ostapenko.

That was their first meeting, and Ostapenko went on to triumph at Indian Wells 2021 before a pair of wins that bookended Swiatek’s first reign as World No. 1. Her 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) triumph in the 2022 Dubai third round was Swiatek’s last loss before ascending to the top spot and compiling a historic 37-match winning streak. Her 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory in the 2023 US Open fourth round meant that Swiatek ceded World No. 1 to Aryna Sabalenka for the first time.

Quick to start, quick to finish: Ostapenko started as she meant to go on: blitzing a forehand return winner on the first point of the match, and another to capture the Swiatek serve in the first game. In a flurry of overwhelming winners, she stamped her authority on the match from the off by winning eight of the first nine points.

Teeing off on everything, Ostapenko racked up 24 winners to Swiatek’s seven, and committed only 15 unforced errors. Swiatek briefly found an effective response in the sixth game with a pair of angled winners, but her break point opportunity was snuffed out by an Ostapenko service winner.

Ostapenko went from strength to strength in the second set while Swiatek’s level fell. In the fourth game, the Pole netted a smash and shanked a forehand, before Ostapenko came out on top of a wild exchange featuring a drop shot, an absurd reflex and finally a pinpoint backhand winner on the line.

Up 4-0 and having won six straight games, Ostapenko lapsed momentarily to concede her serve for the only time with a double fault. But it was a mere blip, and she resumed pummeling winners to every corner to close out the final two games.

“Obviously I was preparing for the match, and I pretty much knew what to expect from her,” Ostapenko said afterwards. “I don’t know, sometimes I know where the ball’s coming, but sometimes I’m just going with my feelings and my instincts, so that helps me.”

Hot shot: Jelena Ostapenko’s Midas touch in wild Doha semifinal exchange

Jelena Ostapenko continued her dominance over Iga Swiatek as she defeated the Polish star in straight sets to reach the final of the Qatar Total Open in Doha.

Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, improved her head-to-head record against Swiatek to a perfect 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the semi-finals. The Latvian player showcased her aggressive and powerful game to outplay Swiatek, who had been in fine form leading up to the match.

Ostapenko’s win sets up a tantalizing final against either Petra Kvitova or Victoria Azarenka, where she will look to claim her first title of the season. With her impressive performance against Swiatek, Ostapenko has once again proven that she is a force to be reckoned with on the WTA tour.

Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting final as Ostapenko looks to continue her winning streak and lift the trophy in Doha.

  • Black Sabbath Announces ‘Final’ Concert With Metallica, Slayer

Black Sabbath Announces ‘Final’ Concert With Metallica, Slayer

Black Sabbath has announced what is being billed as the “final” show by its original lineup — Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward — a benefit titled ‘Back to the Beginning’ in the band’s hometown of Birmingham, England, taking place on July 5 at the city’s Villa Park.

Also performing at “Back to the Beginning” will be Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God, Anthrax, Mastodon and a supergroup featuring Guns N’ Roses’ Slash, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Korn’s Jonathan Davis, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Wolfgang Van Halen and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, who will also act as musical director of the concert.

All profits from the show will be shared equally between Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorn Children’s Hospice.

It will mark the first time the original lineup has performed together in 20 years. Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who has suffered a number of ailments that have caused him to cancel shows in recent years, will play his own short set before joining with Black Sabbath for his final bow. While he and the band have announced their retirement or final show several times in the past — Osbourne first “retired” in the early 1990s — his condition and the group’s age (all are 75 or 76 years old) would seem to make this the actual finale.

“It’s my time to go Back to the Beginning… time for me to give back to the place where I was born,” Osbourne said in the announcement. “How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham Forever.”

Morello added, “It will be the greatest heavy metal concert ever.”

Formed in Birmingham in 1968, Sabbath are universally regarded as the godfathers of heavy metal and have sold more than 75 million albums worldwide across their career. Yet their influence far exceed even those record sales — nearly every hard rock band since the 1970s bears their mark.

All profits will go to the following charities: Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorns Children’s Hospice, a Children’s Hospice supported by Aston Villa.

Black Sabbath, the iconic heavy metal band, has announced what they are calling their “final” concert, and they are going out with a bang by sharing the stage with two other legendary metal acts – Metallica and Slayer.

The concert, set to take place on a yet-to-be-announced date and location, will mark the end of an era for Black Sabbath, who have been rocking audiences for over four decades. Fans can expect a night of pure metal madness as the band delivers their classic hits one last time.

Metallica and Slayer, two of the biggest names in metal music, joining forces with Black Sabbath for this historic event is sure to make it an unforgettable night for metal fans around the world.

Stay tuned for more details on this epic concert that is sure to go down in rock history. Don’t miss your chance to witness three of the greatest metal bands of all time sharing the stage for one last time.

  • NCAA men’s hockey tournament bubble; how to watch Beanpot final

While the biggest prize in college hockey clearly is the national championship trophy, in one corner of the sport’s landscape, that accolade has a rival: the Beanpot.

The 72nd tournament, which features Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard, concludes Monday at TD Garden with BC facing BU in the championship game (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+).

Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in the country (BC is No. 1, BU is No. 8 in the most recent polls), but even in years when the Beanpot doesn’t have national implications of that magnitude, the energy, desire and hatred boil over for the schools and their fans.

This year’s final has a different twist, however. Nine of the players — six from BC, three from BU — were teammates at the IIHF World Junior Championship, where they won the gold medal for Team USA in January. At least one member of the Eagles or Terriers scored or assisted on all but one of the 37 goals the U.S. scored in the tournament.

Any friendships will be on hold Monday night.

“It’s just understanding that you can’t have any friends out there,” BC freshman James Hagens told the Boston Globe last month. “You might play with them for a while. They might be your best buddies, but you just have to understand it’s a hockey game, and you have to go out there and win.”

BU’s Cole Eiserman expressed similar sentiments. “You battle with those guys, get close to those guys, but I think we’re all competitive guys,” he told the Globe. “We want to win for our own school.”

The teams met in a home-and-home series in January, with BC sweeping by scores of 6-2 and 2-0. But BU will gladly accept those results in exchange for a trophy-lifting win Monday night. The Terriers last won the Beanpot in 2022, while BC’s most recent championship was in 2016. Northeastern has won five of the last six tournaments.

While Monday’s game will not count in the Hockey East standings, conference races are heating up around the country as the selection of the NCAA tournament field nears.

The NCAA field includes the winners of the six conference tournaments — Atlantic, Big Ten, CCHA, ECAC, Hockey East and NCHC — and 10 at-large teams based on the PairWise rankings.

Conference tournament championship games are scheduled for March 22, with the NCAA tournament selections to be announced March 23. Regionals will be held March 27-30, with the Frozen Four on April 10 and 12 in St. Louis. Every NCAA tournament game, including the selection show, will be on ESPN networks and streamed on ESPN+.

Here’s a look at where the NCAA field stands, with teams listed in order of the PairWise rankings as of Feb. 9.

Dozens of men’s and women’s college hockey games, including games from Hockey East and the ECAC plus full coverage of the NCAA tournaments, are available to stream on . Subscribe here.

Key games: Feb. 10 vs. BC (Beanpot championship); Feb. 14-15 home-and-home vs. Providence

In the field — for now

UMass-Lowell has slipped a few notches with three losses in four games, while Michigan and Arizona State improved their standing this past weekend with splits against Michigan State and Denver, respectively.

    No. 11 UMass-Lowell

    Record: 14-10-3, 7-8-2 Hockey East

Last week’s results: Lost to Denver 5-4 (OT); beat Denver 6-5 (OT)

Key games: Feb. 21-22 vs. Western Michigan; Feb. 28-March 1 at Omaha

    One-bid league champs

It’s looking more and more likely we’ll have three one-bid leagues — the ECAC, CCHA and Atlantic. Quinnipiac and Minnesota State are on the fringes of the at-large bubble, but if they fail to win their conference tournaments, the losses along the way seem likely to dash their at-large hopes.

Quinnipiac leads a tight ECAC race, with the top five teams within five points of each other, while Minnesota State has a solid hold on first place in the CCHA. So we’re penciling the Bobcats and Mavericks in the NCAA field for now.

In the Atlantic, Sacred Heart, Holy Cross and Bentley are within one point of each other in the league standings — although Holy Cross and Bentley have played two fewer games than Sacred Heart — and are bunched together in the PairWise. We gave the nod to the Crusaders, who are one spot ahead of Bentley in the PairWise, but as with the other three leagues in this group, it will all come down to the conference tournament.

    Quinnipiac

Record: 17-9-2, 11-4-1 ECAC (No. 15 in PairWise)

Last week’s results: Beat St. Lawrence 6-1; lost to Clarkson 3-2 (OT)

Key games: Feb. 14 at Union; Feb. 28 at Clarkson

    Minnesota State

Record: 20-8-2, 15-5-2 CCHA (No. 17 in PairWise)

Last week’s results: Beat Augustana 4-1 and 2-1

Key games: Feb. 21-22 at Lake Superior State

    Holy Cross

Record: 17-11-2, 16-4-2 Atlantic (No. 30 in PairWise)

Last week’s results: Won at RIT 9-2 and 3-0

Key games: Feb. 20 vs. Bentley; Feb. 24 vs. AIC

    On the bubble

Assuming there will be three conference champions outside of the top 16 in PairWise, teams below No. 13 will be out of luck in terms of grabbing an at-large NCAA bid. But the standings in this range are very tight, with positions changing with almost every result. These teams will have opportunities for key wins to gain critical PairWise capital, but the margin for error is slim.

    No. 14 UMass

    Record: 15-11-2, 6-8-2 Hockey East

Last week’s results: Won at UConn 5-4

    Key games: Feb. 14-15 home-and-home vs. BC; Feb. 27-March 1 home-and-home vs. UMass-Lowell

    No. 16 Penn State

    Record: 14-11-3, 5-10-3 Big Ten

Last week’s results: Won at Wisconsin 2-0 and 6-2

Key games: Feb. 21-22 at Michigan State; Feb. 28-March 1 vs. Minnesota

    No. 18 New Hampshire

    Record: 11-12-3, 3-11-2 Hockey East

Last week’s results: Lost to BC 4-2; lost to Merrimack 5-4

Key games: Feb. 14-15 at Maine; Feb. 28-March 1 home-and-home vs. BC

Lazio are reportedly on the cusp of sealing an accord with Hellas Verona for the transfer of Reda Belahyane.

    Futile Casadei Chase

The 20-year-old was one of the first names on the club’s January shortlist, but the track cooled down when Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani decided to vigorously chase Cesare Casadei in previous weeks, only for the latter to complete a transfer from Chelsea to Torino who prevailed in the gruelling soap opera.

Reda Belahyane Edging Closer to Lazio

Therefore, Lazio have decided to revive their attempts to sign Belahyane. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the two clubs are close to striking a full accord which would see the French Morrocan complete a deadline-day switch on Monday. On the other hand, the Sky Sport Italia correspondent also denies the rumors linking the Aquile to Empoli’s Jacopo Fazzini.

    The Competitors

For his part, fellow journalist Alfredo Pedulla adds that Belahyane is on his way out of Verona even though his transfer to Stade Rennais collapsed following the sacking of Jorge Sampaoli. The transfer market expert reveals that the young deep-lying playmaker is followed by Marseille and Fiorentina, but Lazio could pounce on their excellent rapport with the Gialloblu to seal the deal.

    Toma Basic to Sassuolo

Pedulla expects the potential operation to cost the Biancocelesti around €12-13 million. He also reveals that Lazio are close to offloading their outcasted midfielder Toma Basic, as they’re currently engaged in advanced negotiations with Sassuolo.

According to reports, Lazio is close to finalizing a deal with Hellas Verona for the transfer of Reda Belahyane. The midfielder has been on the radar of Lazio for some time now, and it seems that a deal is finally within reach.

Belahyane has been impressive in his performances for Verona this season, catching the eye of several top clubs in Italy. Lazio has been in talks with Verona for weeks now, and it appears that they are close to reaching an agreement for the transfer of the talented midfielder.

The final details of the deal are still being ironed out, but it is expected that Belahyane will soon be a Lazio player. The move would be a significant boost for Lazio, who are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Fans of both clubs will be eager to see how Belahyane performs in his new surroundings, and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to life at Lazio. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing transfer saga.
