    Final: Syracuse 75, California 66

Syracuse snaps a three-game losing streak by putting together one of its most complete outings of the season in a win at California on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California.

After leading by 13 points late in regulation, Cal cut the margin to 67-61 with a little more than a minute remaining, forcing the Orange to earn the win at the free throw line down the stretch.

The Orange weathered a couple of big Cal scoring runs in the second half to rebuild a double-digit lead and now catches a red-eye flight home on Sunday morning for a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and put the defensive clamps on Cal by bringing out a 2-3 zone. The defensive move helped limit Cal to less than 20% shooting from the floor in the first half and less than 30% for the game. Syracuse led by as many as 18 points about midway through the second half.

    Second half

    3:17 remaining: Syracuse 62, California 52

If the result holds, Syracuse will head home with a 10-12 record to face the lone unbeaten team in ACC play that is coming off a dominant 17-point victory against its arch rival (Duke led North Carolina by 30 points on Saturday).

FYI: The Blue Devils have not lost since before Thanksgiving.

Blacksher rattles home a 3, and the Bears are on an 11-0 run over the last 4-plus minutes.

Cal hanging around and is in the bonus, but the Bears commit a bad turnover on a lazy, misguided lob pass that Lampkin easily intercepts.

    7:37 remaining: Syracuse 58, California 46

Good contested shot by McLeod at the rim to turn away Cal. The 7-foot-4 center has two points, three rebounds and a block in nine minutes of action.

Cal is still shooting just 26% from the floor for the game and is 4-for-25 from 3. The Orange is shooting 50% from the field and 7-for-12 (58%) from 3.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 56, California 39

Syracuse turns it over out of the under-16 TV timeout. Starling curls off a screen and hits a short jumper from the elbow.

The Orange answers with a burst of a 7-0 run, including a 3 by Carlos to push the lead back to 14.

Starling then uses a screen up top by Lampkin to get downhill and finishes at the rim.

Starling has a team high 14 points but heads to the bench with just more than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.

Carlos gets the break going off a long missed 3 and finishes through contact for a three-point play.

    15:43 remaining: Syracuse 45, California 36

Elijah Moore picks up where he left off in the first half with an early 3 before Cal rattles off seven straight points punctuated by a thunderous dunk in transition.

Jyare Davis with a sloppy entry pass to Lampkin and turns it over out of a timeout. It turns into an and-one opportunity for Cal at the other end. The Bears have trimmed the lead to 10 and have as many field goals in the first three minutes of the second half as they did in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Wilkinson hits a step-back 3 over Moore and all you can do is tip your cap to the shot-making ability of the freshman.

Starling answers with a much-needed bucket to snap a 10-0 Cal run.

    Halftime: Syracuse 40, California 23

Syracuse has opened up a 17-point halftime lead behind an active, versatile defense, holding Cal to less than 20% shooting from the field.

Nine of the 10 Orange men who have checked into the game have scored, with JJ Starling and Lucas Taylor pacing the Orange with seven points apiece. Elijah Moore (six points) and Jyare Davis (six points; five rebounds) also aided the Orange effort in the first half.

Syracuse has turned to its 2-3 zone at moments in the first half, evening subbing in seldom-used backup center Naheem McLeod for four first-half minutes.

The zone and SU’s man-to-man defense has completely flummoxed Cal, holding the Bears to 4-for-23 shooting, including 2-for-14 from 3.

    First half

Good second-effort by Davis to follow his miss off the glass and finish underneath.

Lampkin then sticks back a miss by Majstorovic.

Cal has 13 of its 23 points at the free throw line and it’s shooting sub-20% from the field.

Starling, who had missed his last six shots, ends the half with a 3.

    3:46 remaining: Syracuse 33, California 17

Cal’s 7:15 field goal drought is, mercifully, over.

Taylor hits a 3 at the other end. Cal is 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. Taylor looks toward Moore on a back-door cut but Moore doesn’t appear to look for the pass and it’s a turnover for the Orange.

Davis absorbs contact down low for a lay-in. Then, off a turnover, Lampkin kicks it out to Moore for a corner 3 to open up a 14-point lead.

Syracuse now has its largest lead of the game off a short hook in the paint by Lampkin.

    7:52 remaining: Syracuse 23, California 10

McLeod corrals a catch and finishes in the paint. Then, Carlos picks up his dribble in the lane but uses some crafty footwork to get a shot up and draw a foul. Syracuse leads, 18-9 as Cal has started 2-for-11 from the field.

Bell, who’s shooting 50% over his last eight games (17-for-34), scores five straight points, to open up a double-digit lead. The junior grew up about 30 minutes outside Berkeley.

The Bears are now 2-for-13 from the field and settling for a bunch of bad shots.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 14, California 9

Davis is working hard on the glass to keep a possession alive and earns a trip to the free throw line. The Orange enters the game next-to-last in the 18-team league in free throw shooting and 3-point shooting.

Jovan Blacksher, an Oakland native who transferred in from Grand Canyon, hits two free throws, and the Orange has an 11-4 lead five minutes into the game.

Chris Bell, Jaquan Carlos, Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. await at the scorer’s table and will check in with 13:01 remaining in the half.

Carlos, coming off a perfect shooting performance at Stanford, hits the side of the backboard on his first perimeter shot of the evening.

Naheem McLeod with some rare minutes here in the first half.

Cal is 2-for-10 from the field, while the Orange is 5-for-14.

    15:48 remaining: Syracuse 9, California 2

Elijah Moore hits a 3 to open up a 9-0 start before freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson hits a midrange jumper.

Moore tries an extra pass to Jyare Davis underneath the basket instead of taking it up off the feed from Lampkin and turns it over.

    17:34 remaining: Syracuse 6, California 0

Syracuse opens up with a familiar starting five. JJ Starling gets the Orange on the board first with a strong take to the basket.

Cal starts 0-for-3 from 3. Starling then uses a screen from Eddie Lampkin at the top of the key and gets to the rack for a second lay-up before Lucas Taylor hits a pop shot in the paint.

    Pregame

Update 9:55 p.m.: Sissoko will be available; Stojakovic is out, per Cal.

Welcome to February basketball, when bubble talk becomes more ubiquitous and teams attempt to peak by March.

The Orange has just 10 regular-season games remaining in what has been among its worst on record in the last 55 years.

Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) is barreling toward just its second losing season since 1968-69, when SU finished 9-16 in Roy Danforth’s first season.

The Golden Bears (11-10, 4-6) are five-point home favorites, but Saturday’s game represents a rare opportunity for a road win.

SU is 1-8 in games away from the JMA Wireless Dome, including an 0-3 mark on a neutral court in Brooklyn.

The Orange has to fly back to the East Coast late Saturday night and has a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night, a scheduling truth that drew criticism from assistant coach Allen Griffin earlier this week during a local radio interview.

Pregame updates on two Cal starters will be worth monitoring. Andrej Stojakovic, a 6-7 forward, and Mady Sissoko, a 6-9 center, both missed its 76-65 loss at SMU on Wednesday.

Syracuse has been playing without injured five-star freshman forward Donnie Freeman, who is sidelined indefinitely with a foot issue.

Syracuse basketball stays poised in 2nd half to snap 3-game losing streak at Cal: Final score, recap

In a thrilling matchup against Cal, Syracuse basketball showed their resilience and determination as they snapped a 3-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory on the road. The final score of the game was 78-72 in favor of the Orange.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense. Cal managed to take a slim lead going into halftime, but Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.

Led by star guard Buddy Boeheim, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Orange turned up the intensity on both ends of the court. Their defense tightened up, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, while their offense found its rhythm, knocking down key shots and getting to the free-throw line.

Despite a late surge from Cal, Syracuse stayed poised and composed, making crucial plays down the stretch to secure the much-needed win. The victory was a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.

With this win, Syracuse improves to 5-3 on the season and looks to build on this momentum as they head into conference play. The Orange will look to continue their winning ways and make a push for the postseason.

  • WI complete series sweep as Tigresses suffer five-wicket defeat in final T20I

Bangladesh women’s cricket team were whitewashed in their three-match T20I series against hosts West Indies as the Tigresses suffered a five-wicket defeat in their third and final T20I at Warner Park on Saturday.

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh could only manage 104 for eight in 20 overs, with skipper Nigar Sultana Joty scoring a team-high 43-ball 33. It was yet another meek batting display by the Tigresses as only three other batters were able to reach double figures — wicketkeeper-batter and opener Dilara Akter Dola hit a 16-ball 21, Murshida Khatun scored 13 off 12 while Taj Nehar scored a run-a-ball 10.

Jannillea Glasgow starred with the ball in hand for the hosts, returning figures of three for 15 in four overs.

Bangladesh, however, got off to a promising start in their defense of a low total as off-spinner Sultana Khatun removed Windies opener Nerissa Crafton (5 off 4) in the second over to leave the hosts at seven for one after 1.2 overs.

The Tigresses managed to remove half of the Windies’ line-up by the 12th over, having the hosts in a spot of bother at five for 61 in 11.2 overs. However, a 44-run unbeaten sixth-wicket stand between Shabika Gajnabi (27 off 25*) and Zaida James (14 off 22*) saw the hosts get over the line with nine balls to spare.

For Bangladesh, Sultana and leg-spinner Fahima Khatun took two wickets each.

The West Indies Women’s cricket team completed a clean sweep of the series as they defeated the Bangladesh Tigresses by five wickets in the final T20I match.

The Tigresses put up a competitive total of 140/5 in their 20 overs, with Fargana Hoque top-scoring with 45 runs. However, the West Indies bowlers put in a disciplined performance to restrict the hosts and pick up crucial wickets at regular intervals.

In reply, the West Indies got off to a solid start with openers Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin putting on a 70-run partnership. Despite a few hiccups in the middle overs, Kyshona Knight’s unbeaten 35 ensured that the visitors chased down the target with an over to spare.

With this victory, the West Indies completed a 3-0 series sweep and showcased their dominance in the T20 format. The Tigresses, on the other hand, will look to regroup and come back stronger in the upcoming series.

  • Gladiator 2 Lands Its Final Global Box Office Milestone & It Comes Just Short Of The Original Movie’s Overall Total

Gladiator II has passed one final milestone at the global box office. Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator II takes place years after Maximus’ death and focuses on his son Lucius (Paul Mescal), who must enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. The first movie, also directed by Scott, was a major success both critically and financially, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Despite its predecessor’s acclaim, Gladiator II received more mixed reviews, with many praising its performances and visuals, while others felt it didn’t capture the same essence as the original.

According to Box Office Mojo, Gladiator II has officially earned $460.5 million worldwide, achieving what will likely be its last milestone at the box office. It’s a solid total, but it does just fall short of the first film, which earned $465.5 million worldwide. However, the first film’s box office total includes its various re-releases, which provided additional revenue over the years.

What This Means For Gladiator II’s Box Office

    Gladiator II Could’ve Flown Higher

The $460 million global total for Gladiator II means that, ultimately, it might not be that profitable thanks to its estimated budget of $250 million. It also falls short of surpassing the original film’s complete earnings. When accounting for the additional re-release figures as well, Gladiator‘s financial edge becomes clear, as the sequel hasn’t yet had the chance to reconnect with audiences. Nevertheless, Gladiator II shows that even an eagerly anticipated sequel may struggle to replicate the staying power of its predecessor.

Movies generally have to earn 2x its budget to be considered a financial success. In the case of a $250 million budget, that would be closer to $500 million.

In comparison to other films released around the same time in 2024, such as Moana 2 and Wicked, Gladiator II’s performance aligns closely with the broader box office trends for major 2024 releases. Other films that performed similarly include Venom: The Last Dance and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While it has managed to hold its ground, it has not been able to outperform the aforementioned titles. Though $460 million is a sizable total, especially in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, one could argue Gladiator II‘s performance is ultimately underwhelming.

Our Take On Gladiator II’s Box Office Performance

Gladiator II Falls Behind Its Predecessor

Paul Mescal as Lucius rubbing dirt into his hands in Gladiator 2

While Gladiator II might not have surpassed the original’s overall success, it has still proven itself to be a lasting contender at the box office, especially considering the competitive nature of 2024. Additionally, it now has the chance to make up some ground by streaming on Paramount+, at least in terms of its overall audience size. With strong performances and visuals, Gladiator II’s ability to earn a decent global total is an achievement in itself, as this shows it has held on in the weeks since its release, even if it could’ve reached higher.

The highly anticipated sequel to the iconic film “Gladiator” has finally reached its final global box office milestone, but it falls just short of the original movie’s overall total. Fans of the original film have flocked to theaters to see their favorite characters return to the big screen, and the box office numbers reflect the immense anticipation and excitement surrounding the sequel.

  • ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Fails To Hunt Down One Final Worldwide Box Office Milestone

There were plenty of box office flops in 2024, and while some were easier to predict than others, perhaps the one that everyone saw coming was Kraven the Hunter. The film came at a time when the world was seemingly at the end of its rope with the SSU (Sony’s Spider-Man Universe), which features movies centered on Spider-Man villains but no Spider-Man. Kraven was the most expensive Sony Marvel movie yet, boasting a budget of around $110 million, but the film is poised to finish its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise by a long shot. At the time of writing, Kraven the Hunter has grossed $24.8 million domestically and $34.9 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $59 million globally, and it does not look like it will reach the $60 million threshold.

Kraven the Hunter will become the only Sony Marvel movie to finish with less than $100 million at the box office, as even Madame Web was able to narrowly scrape by and get its earnings into the nine-figures. However, while most people view the SSU as a colossal financial failure, the franchise has actually fared better than you might expect. Thanks to the success of the Venom movies, which have collectively grossed over $1.8 billion from three films at the worldwide box office, Sony has been able to recuperate its losses from other movies such as Morbius, Madame Web, and now Kraven. Each Venom movie needed around $200 million to break even with the rest being pure profit, so the symbiote franchise collectively earned the studio more than $1 billion to pad its pockets.

Who Stars in ‘Kraven the Hunter’?

Aaron Taylor-Johnson features in the lead role of Kraven the Hunter, and even his undeniable charm wasn’t enough to win over audiences or critics. Ariana DeBose also features alongside Taylor-Johnson as Calypso Ezili, with Gladiator 2 star Fred Hechinger portraying Dmitri Kravinoff. The Brutalist star Alessandro Nivola also features in Kraven the Hunter alongside Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe. It almost makes it both more sad and impressive that Kraven the Hunter was able to fail so spectacularly at the box office, considering it has arguably a stronger cast than any other Sony Marvel movie.

Kraven the Hunter is still playing in extremely limited theaters, but the film is also available to watch at home on digital platforms. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and watch Kraven the Hunter on Prime Video.

Despite being a highly anticipated film, “Kraven the Hunter” has failed to reach one final worldwide box office milestone. The film, which follows the story of the iconic Spider-Man villain, has fallen short of crossing the $500 million mark globally.

Despite strong performances from the cast and a visually stunning production, “Kraven the Hunter” has struggled to attract audiences in some key international markets. The film’s lackluster performance in countries like China and Russia has contributed to its inability to hit the $500 million mark.

While “Kraven the Hunter” has been praised for its action sequences and character development, it seems that it may not be able to achieve the same level of success as other superhero films in the box office. Despite this setback, the film’s producers remain hopeful that it will find success in other avenues, such as streaming services and home video sales.

Overall, “Kraven the Hunter” may have fallen short of one final box office milestone, but it has still managed to make a mark in the superhero genre. Fans of the character will no doubt continue to support the film and hope for future installments in the franchise.

Here you’ll find the Final Jeopardy clue for Friday, January 31, 2025. The Jeopardy Tournament of Champions continues and in yesterday’s match a single-letter misspelling in Final Jeopardy led to one of the favorites, Mehal Shah, to get booted out. Perhaps the contestants for today’s episode will fair better, including content manager Mark Fitzpatrick from Connecticut, Episcopal priest Kevin Laskowski from Virginia, and data scientist Allison Gross from Ohio. Here are the question and answer for Final Jeopardy on 1/31/2025, plus the wagers and the winner of the episode.

Final Jeopardy Question for January 31

Final Jeopardy Wagers and Winner for January 31

Mark came away with the win in the January 31 match to become the fifth semifinalist for the tournament. As we suspected, no one got the right answer for Final Jeopardy.

Final Jeopardy Answer for January 31

The correct answer for Final Jeopardy on January 31, 2025 is “What is Sitka, Alaska?”

The hints in this clue are not to difficult to follow. The name of the city “Novo Arkhangelsk” is in Russian and means “New Archangel,” the year that its name changed was before 1867, and the category says that this city is in the United States.

That all points to some city in Alaska, though that might still not be enough information for people to guess Sitka, which is not a well-known city in the state. Maybe the fact that the sitka spruce is a type of tree will help here, but there are many other cities named after trees so it’s not exactly that helpful.

  • Final Destination: Bloodlines First Look Revealed as the Movie Reaches a Huge Milestone

Final Destination: Bloodlines has reached two major milestones on its path to theaters, with composer Tim Wynn revealing its official logo while announcing the completion of its musical score. The reveal comes from inside the editing room during the final stages of post-production, underlining the film remains firmly on track for its May 2025 release date. That’s no minor feat, considering the sixth chapter of the Final Destination movie series has overcome numerous obstacles, including pandemic-related delays and the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes. As the franchise approaches its 25th anniversary, Bloodlines promises to honor its legacy while pushing the series in bold new directions, including an unprecedented worldwide IMAX release and a deeper exploration of the mythology that has captivated audiences for nearly a quarter century.

The score’s completion marks a significant milestone for a production that has undergone substantial changes since its 2019 announcement. When New Line Cinema first revealed the project, writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan crafted a script described as a “re-imagining” of the franchise. By March 2020, producer Craig Perry envisioned a story centered on first responders, stating, “These people deal with death on the front lines every day and make choices that can cause people to live or die.” This concept was further transformed through multiple screenplay iterations, with Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick ultimately crafting the current script based on a story by Jon Watts. The sixth installment notably features the late Tony Todd returning posthumously as William Bludworth, the mysterious mortician who appeared in Final Destination, Final Destination 2, and Final Destination 5, with the story promising to explore his character’s origins.

The project faced several hurdles before locking a release date. The planned July 2023 production start in Vancouver was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strike, with filming eventually taking place between March 4 and May 13, 2024, under cinematographer Christian Sebaldt. Initially announced as an HBO Max release in January 2022, Warner Bros. Pictures later shifted the film to a theatrical release including IMAX screens, marking the first time the franchise will appear in this premium format. All that spells good news for fans, indicating Warner’s confidence in the new movie.

The Final Destination franchise distinguished itself in the horror landscape through its innovative premise of Death as an invisible force rather than a traditional antagonist. Since Jeffrey Reddick developed his original concept from a real story about a woman who avoided a doomed flight due to her mother’s premonition, the series has delivered increasingly elaborate death sequences across five films from 2000 to 2011. Each installment maintained the core premise of survivors attempting to cheat death after a premonition saves them from a catastrophic event while gradually expanding the mythology through Bludworth’s cryptic appearances.

Series creator Jeffrey Reddick has indicated this sixth installment will differ from the established formula, stating that while it remains “a true Final Destination movie,” it won’t follow the traditional pattern of “we set up a group of people, they cheat death, and then just death gets them.” With directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein selected from over 200 candidates after a memorable pitch meeting featuring a staged accident, Bloodlines aims to bring a fresh perspective to a franchise that has generated over $650 million across its previous five installments.

Final Destination: Bloodlines has come a long way since it was announced over half a decade ago. In January 2019, years after the release of Final Destination 5, New Line Cinema announced a new installment in the franchise was in development. However, the project encountered several obstacles before getting a release date. The planned July 2023 production start in Vancouver was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strike, with filming eventually taking place between March 4 and May 13, 2024, under cinematographer Christian Sebaldt. Most of the cast was revealed within that period, and later, in December, Wynn was hired to compose the score.

Created by Jeffrey Reddick, the Final Destination films are set around the premise of a small group of people who escape impending death after one individual has a sudden intuition and warns them about a major disaster that is about to happen. After avoiding their foretold deaths seen in the visions, the survivors are later killed one by one in unusual accidents caused by an unseen force creating complicated chains of cause and effect.

The first four films in the franchise each have about three years in between their release dates, but Final Destination 5 arrived two years after its predecessor and did pretty well at the global box office. It grossed nearly $158 million, slightly less than the fourth installment’s earnings of over $186 million. All in all, Final Destination is the tenth highest-grossing horror franchise nationwide and is New Line’s third most lucrative horror franchise, behind The Conjuring franchise and the IT series.

Final Destination: Bloodlines arrives in the U.S. on May 16, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates.

  • Is Dejounte Murray Playing? Final Celtics vs Pelicans Injury Report Revealed

The Boston Celtics will take on the New Orleans Pelicans in a crucial road game, with their eyes set on maintaining their grip on the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

Currently, the Celtics sit just one game ahead of the New York Knicks, who are nipping at their heels for second place. With the playoff race tightening, the Celtics can’t afford to take any game lightly, especially with their ongoing struggles with consistency throughout the season.

More Celtics: Trade Idea Has Celtics Land Former Guard Before Deadline

Every win counts at this point, and the team knows the importance of staying sharp against an undermanned Pelicans squad.

The Celtics come into the matchup with a relatively healthy roster, which should give them an advantage over the injury-riddled Pelicans. All five starters—Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis—are expected to suit up, giving Boston a strong and deep lineup.

If the Celtics can avoid the lapses in focus that have plagued them at times this season, they should be well-positioned to secure a win in New Orleans.

On the other hand, the Pelicans’ situation is far less optimistic.

Sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 12-36 record, New Orleans has been devastated by injuries all season. Key players like Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Dejounte Murray have missed significant time, leaving the team struggling to find consistency.

Williamson, in particular, has been a massive loss, and his absence has been felt throughout the roster.

Despite the team’s challenges, there is a glimmer of hope for New Orleans with Dejounte Murray listed as probable for the game. Murray, who is averaging 17.9 points and 7.6 assists per game, has been dealing with a right elbow and index finger injury, but his return could provide a much-needed spark for the Pelicans.

However, Murray was upgraded to available and will play in this game.

If Murray can play alongside Williamson, the Pelicans may have a better chance to compete, though it’s unclear if they’ll have enough firepower to truly challenge the Celtics.

Adding to the Pelicans’ woes, several other key players, including Brandon Ingram, Herbert Jones, and Jordan Hawkins, have all been ruled out, further depleting the team’s chances of success.

For the Celtics, this presents an opportunity to capitalize on a weakened opponent and keep the pressure on the teams above them in the standings. With so much at stake, expect Boston to treat this game as a must-win.

Murray, who has been dealing with a nagging knee injury, has been a key player for the Pelicans this season.

Fortunately for Pelicans fans, the latest injury report has revealed that Dejounte Murray will be suiting up for the game against the Celtics. This news comes as a relief for the team, as Murray’s presence on the court is sure to have a significant impact on the outcome of the game.

With Murray back in the lineup, the Pelicans will be looking to secure a crucial win against the Celtics and improve their standing in the highly competitive Western Conference. Be sure to tune in to see Dejounte Murray in action as the Pelicans take on the Celtics in what is sure to be an exciting matchup.
