  • ‘Fingers crossed’ this is not the end of Bridget Jones

Renee Zellweger stars in the fourth instalment in the franchise

This article contains spoilers about Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has been billed as the fourth and final film in the series – but its star Renée Zellweger says she has her “fingers crossed” that is not the case.

Zellweger has played our favourite hapless heroine for more than 20 years and seems as attached to her as ever, calling the character an “old friend”.

Speaking at the film’s premiere in London’s Leicester Square on Wednesday evening, the actress says she is “in denial” and “it hasn’t sunk in yet” that the franchise may be coming to a close.

“Let me live in denial for a little longer”, she laughs.

Yet, while there are no plans to take the Bridget Jones story any further, author Helen Fielding is not completely ruling out the prospect.

The new film sees Bridget living as a widow, becoming a single mother and tackling modern dating.

The story is partially inspired by Fielding’s own loss. Her husband, Kevin Curran, died in 2016.

Zellweger says the film is a “beautiful story and really the most personal for Helen. She is sharing about her own experiences about loss, grief and finding new happiness, it’s a pretty special one”.

She adds she has always felt “really, really lucky to get the part” and “was just trying not to get fired”.

Watch: Touching pink carpet reunion for Bridget Jones’ stars

It is obvious there is a real love between the cast too as Zellweger and her on screen father, Jim Broadbent, embrace on the pink carpet.

Hugh Grant was also at the premiere. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy sees the return of Grant’s roguish anti-hero, Daniel Cleaver.

He was declared dead at the start of the last film, Bridget Jones’s Baby – only to be found alive just before the final credits.

We also see a slightly softer side of this notorious womaniser and cad in the new film.

    New love interests

Getty Images (left to right) Leo Woodall, Renée Zellweger and Chiwetel Ejiofor at the premiere of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy in London on 29 January 2025Getty Images

Leo Woodall (left) and Chiwetel Ejiofor play Bridget’s love interests in the film

But Bridget’s love interests in the film are brand new characters.

One Day’s Leo Woodall plays her Tinder match who at 29 is (cough) a little younger than 51 year old Bridget.

Bafta winner Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a buttoned-up teacher Bridget encounters on the school run and a rain-soaked class trip.

Woodall says although he felt “a lot of pressure” going into the film he knew it was going to be “relatively easy” as soon as he met Zellweger as she was “joyous and generous and kind and good and obviously a wonderful actor”.

On whether he has had any clumsy Bridget Jones moments himself, Woodhall says “he falls over quite a lot”.

Ejiofor, who is mainly known for grittier roles in films like 12 Years a Slave and American Gangster says the film is a “different speed” to his usual projects.

But adds it was lovely to film: “Even the set is so warm, everyone is so excited about telling the story”.

    Gen Z appeal

Getty Images Hugh Grant and Renee Zellweger smile in front of a sign reading Bridget Jones Mad About the BoyGetty Images

Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant pose for the cameras at the premiere

For Fielding the success of Bridget Jones lies in its “emotionally honesty”.

“When I first wrote Bridget it was an anonymous column in the Independent which I thought would be stopped after six weeks for being too silly,” she says.

“That freed me up to be honest in a way I could never have been otherwise and I think that’s what people related to.

“I thought I was the only person who felt like that and it turns out for a lot of people there is a huge gap between how you feel you are supposed to be and how you really are.”

Bridget was a character created in the 1990s and Fielding says she is “really touched” that Gen Z have also embraced her.

“When I do a signing half the audience are Gen Z’s. They’re the first generation who have lived through a world crisis for ages. They’re very similar to Bridget in their emotional fragility, their ability to share and cry on TikTok.

“And they have their same little rituals, Bridget has ice cream and vodka and they have sleep routines and things like that.

“I think they’re a really interesting and lovely generation. I can’t wait until they start writing more novels.”

    Inspired by Keir Starmer?

Getty Images Helen Fielding wearing a long burgundy dress with a long slit up the leg, standing in front of a flower wallGetty Images

Author Helen Fielding said she is “really touched” a new generation has taken to the Bridget Jones story

It has long been rumoured that the book’s character of human rights barrister Mark Darcy – played by Colin Firth in the previous Bridget Jones films – was based on barrister turned prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.

So is there any truth in this?

“All I’ll say about that is that if you look at early pictures of Colin in the film and pictures of Keir Starmer in a wig, they’re awfully similar,” Fielding says with a smile.

So we may never know that for sure, but could there be another Bridget Jones book and film?

    “Never say never,” Fielding adds.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is released in UK cinemas on Valentine’s Day.

Fingers crossed this is not the end of Bridget Jones

Fans of the beloved character Bridget Jones are holding their breath as rumors swirl about the possible end of the iconic series. With author Helen Fielding hinting at a possible conclusion to Bridget’s story, fans are anxiously waiting to see what happens next.

Will Bridget finally find true love? Will she overcome her never-ending struggles with self-doubt and insecurity? Will she continue to entertain us with her hilarious mishaps and adventures?

As we wait for answers, let’s keep our fingers crossed that this is not the end of Bridget Jones. After all, we can’t imagine a world without our favorite singleton and her chaotic yet endearing life. Here’s hoping that Bridget’s story is far from over.

  • Man with machete chops off rival’s fingers after dispute over barking dogs

Cops are looking for a man who chopped off most of the fingers on a man’s hand with a machete after a sidewalk dispute in the Bronx erupted over their dogs barking at each other, police said.

According to cops, a 34-year-old man was struck in the left hand with a machete by an unidentified man around 11:24 a.m. Friday near Southern Blvd. and E. 178th St. in West Farms.

The attacker and the victim argued over their dogs barking at each other. As things escalated, the attacker yanked out a machete intending to attack his rival’s dog — but the victim stepped in to protect his pooch, cops said.

The victim was slashed and lost four digits. He was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

The assailant took off soon after the incident. He was described as being in his 40s to 50s and last seen wearing a tan bucket hat, gray hooded sweatshirt, green vest, tan pants and tan boots.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). All calls are confidential.

  • NYC man loses four fingers after being attacked by machete-wielding maniac

A Bronx man had four of his fingers sliced off by a crazed machete-wielding attacker who had threatened to behead the victim’s beloved pooch and maimed the owner instead, he told The Post.

Doctors spent 13 hours reattaching three of the fingers on Tayquon Young’s left hand — but the fourth couldn’t be found, he said from his hospital bed.

“There is a maniac running around with a machete cutting up people’s hands. I hope the city finds this man and gets him the help that he needs,” said Young’s mother, Kimtreese Young, who pleaded for authorities to take the grisly incident “seriously.”

A man lost his fingers when a dog owner became enraged and threated to cut his dog’s head off. Citizen

Young, 34, was walking with his caramel-colored pit bull Chanel at the corner of Southern Boulevard and East 178th around 11:30 a.m. Friday when the 4-year-old pup began trying to play with another man’s smaller canine, according to Young and authorities.

“I was on the phone with my wife, and his dog came up on my dog,” Young recalled.

“They was playing around, his dog didn’t have a leash, my dog was next to me, she wasn’t biting his dog or anything. My dog was trying to play around.”

But the other dog owner took exception, becoming enraged and threatened to cut Chanel’s head off.

He reached into an inner coat pocket — and whipped out a large blade.

“He pulls out the machete to cut my dog’s head off. I put my hand out to grab the sword, and he just cut my hand off,” a shocked Young said.

The machete “was about 30 inches, over two feet.”

“I was in disbelief . … I knew that the fingers were missing, I knew that, but I didn’t want to look down.”

No one tried to help him, he said.

“They was just watching, recording it on their phones to post on their websites. People wasn’t helping me. I had to tell them to call 911. The owner of the store son was recording me. That’s crazy.”

The machete man fled and Young, a maintenance worker for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was rushed to the hospital.

His family tried to find his fourth finger, but couldn’t.

“I know they were looking for the fourth one. I think maybe a bird took it,” said Young, who credited his doctors for being able to reattach the remaining fingers.

“I don’t feel it at all, they numbed it, I’m alright. I’ve been sleeping,” he said. “I’m still in shock. Every time I close my eyes I think about it. When I wake up from sleep I see it, the hit, the impact, the feeling of the brush.”

On Saturday the NYPD released surveillance images of the attack and the machete-carrying madman.

“He had to be already looking for problems to be carrying around a machete. It wasn’t about the dog. He was looking to get into a problem,” said Young, who hoped his case gets the same attention as other crimes in the city.

“I almost feel like if I was shot, they would be more serious about it. When that guy shot the CEO, they found him. My situation should be taken just as seriously,” he said, referring to the Midtown murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

His family now fears for Young’s future.

“We are worried about his livelihood,” his mom said. “He works in maintenance. How could he work now? We are keeping him in our prayers. I know my son as a strong man. It’s hard to see him break down in tears every five minutes [and say] ‘I was just trying to protect my dog.””

Young’s uncle, Andrew Price, lamented the unhinged violence.

“The Bronx has gotten so bad, it’s almost become normal to hear about violence. It happens every day,” he said.

“It makes you think, ‘Should I carry a weapon now?’ Because anybody could have something. My nephew was unarmed.

“I’m just happy it was a finger, and not his whole hand, or his life.”

The victim, who has not been identified, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Witnesses reported seeing the attacker flee the scene, leaving behind a trail of blood and chaos.
