3 killed in Hawaii explosion caused by illegal fireworks display

A 29-year-old man has died nearly a month after sustaining serious burns from a massive fireworks explosion in Hawaii.

The man, whom authorities have not identified, became the fifth person to die in the New Year’s Eve incident at a Honolulu home, a spokesperson with the Honolulu Police Department confirmed to CBS News Tuesday. He was among six victims recovering at the Arizona Burn Center.

Other victims killed by the fireworks included a 3-year-old boy, Cassius Ramos-Benigno, and three women, Carmelita Benigno, 61, Nelie Ibarra, 58, and Jennifer Van, 23, CBS Honolulu affiliate HNN reported.

Honolulu authorities said someone attending a party lit some aerial fireworks that fell on its side, which shot sparks into other crates containing more fireworks.

Over two dozen people were also injured in the blast, officials said.

The incident prompted a crackdown on illegal fireworks in the state, with Gov. Josh Green proposing $300 tickets for igniting fireworks, as well as decades of prison time if the use of fireworks leads to injury or death.

An investigator examines the scene of the deadly fireworks explosion on Keaka Drive in Aliamanu on New Year’s Day. Police arrested two suspects today in connection to the blast that killed four people and injured dozens.

Honolulu police arrested a 33-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man in connection with the Jan. 1 Aliamanu fireworks explosion that killed four people.

According to a Honolulu Police Department highlight today, more than “20 witnesses were located and interviewed, digital evidence was reviewed and examined, and many hours of surveillance video were recovered and reviewed” since the fatal blast that also injured dozens.

“The suspects attended the New Year’s Eve gathering at the Keaka Street home. While at the gathering, they ignited illegal fireworks and also allowed their three children, ages 15, 10, and one, to ignite illegal fireworks. The youngest child was injured during the explosion and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment before being released,” HPD said.

Today at 2:30 p.m., Ruben T. Mateo and Jewel Ann Quines Cabras were arrested at 4144 Keaka Drive on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering, first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, and three fireworks offenses.

“The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are forthcoming,” according to police.

Detectives determined that on shortly after midnight Jan. 1, a person who was attending the party “lit an aerial cake on the driveway leading to the carport.” The “cake,” filled with illegals aerials, fell on its side, and aerials shot into two crates that contained additional cake fireworks, setting off an explosion, police said.

On July 5th, a tragic incident occurred in Aliamanu that resulted in a fatal fireworks explosion. Now, authorities have made a breakthrough in the case as a man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The explosion, which claimed the life of one individual and caused extensive damage to surrounding properties, shocked the community and sparked an intense investigation by law enforcement officials. After weeks of diligent work, the suspects were identified and apprehended, bringing a sense of closure to the devastated neighborhood.

While details of the arrests have not been fully disclosed, it is a relief to know that those responsible for this senseless tragedy are now in custody. The community can now begin to heal and mourn the loss of the victim, knowing that justice is being served.

As we await further developments in the case, let us remember the importance of safety when handling fireworks and the devastating consequences that can result from negligence. Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.

HONOLULU (Island News) — Two suspects were arrested for the Aliamanu fireworks explosion that led to four deaths on New Year’s.

A 33-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were taken into custody on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025. Their offenses include reckless endangering in the first degree, endangering a welfare of a minor in the first degree and multiple fireworks offenses.

Two people were arrested for the Aliamanu fireworks explosion that led to four deaths at a New Year’s Eve party. There could be more arrests to come out of this ongoing investigation.

The fireworks explosion on Keaka Street on Jan. 1st resulted in the deaths of three women ages 61, 58 and 23, and a 3-year-old boy.

At the New Year’s Eve party, the suspects ignited illegal fireworks outside of the home. They allowed their three children, ages 15, 10 and 1, to participate as well. Their youngest child was taken to the hospital because of the explosion, then got released after being treated.

This is an ongoing investigation where additional arrests are yet to be made.

More details will be provided on this developing story.

  • 2 arrests made in Aliamanu fireworks blast; HPD anticipates more

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Police arrested two people in connection with the deadly New Year’s fireworks explosion in Aliamanu.

A man and woman, both 33 years old, were taken into custody Friday afternoon and booked for reckless endangering, endangering the welfare of a minor, and multiple fireworks offenses.

Arrests logs identified them as Mateo Ruben, and Jewel Ann Quines Cabras.

Police say at the gathering, Ruben Mateo and Jewel Cabras ignited illegal fireworks and allowed their three children, ages 15, 10, and 1, to ignite illegal fireworks. Police say the youngest child was injured during the explosion and taken to a hospital for treatment before being released.

Attorney Megan Kau, who is not connected to the case, suspects the pair might not have been the ones to light the fireworks that killed four people, and badly injured more than 20.

“It is my understanding that the investigation is ongoing, and so they are probably looking at other suspects to identify the people that actually lit the fireworks,” Kau said.

The Honolulu Police Department says more arrests are expected.

Since the investigation began, police say they’ve tracked down 20 witnesses, and reviewed many hours of surveillance video.

More than three weeks since the tragedy, the home along Keaka Drive remains boarded up with buckets of flowers and candles outside of the garage where it happened.

“Sorrow and a heavy heart. We have toddlers the same age as the child that has passed, and I cannot imagine … how hard (it’s been) for this family at the beginning of this year,” Bruna Smith said.

Smith and Ketsana Phitsamay live across the street. They left the area before midnight, but did recall seeing a box truck pull up to the home. They say party-goers began unloading what appeared to be a large stash of illegal fireworks.

“I’m very sorry. We were lucky and blessed to not be here because perhaps I would be running and playing with the little boy. So my heart goes out to the parents,” Smith said.

Some of the victims remain in Arizona at a burn center for treatment with long-term injuries. At last check, they were still in medically induced comas.

“If we’re gonna start actually investigating fireworks cases, we have to rely on this possession statue because it’s very easy to prove possession either you know the fireworks were there or they weren’t,” Kau said.

The tragedy shook the neighborhood and a sense of heartbreak and disbelief lingers, according to residents. When asked what punishment she sees fit for those responsible, Smith said, “Is there any more pain that this family should take?”

She understands if fines will be imposed, but hopes others will show compassion, and that it will lead to safer, more responsible celebrations in the future.

“I think compassion is something we can practice and pure aloha is something we should have in their hearts,” Smith said.

  • Melania Trump Arrives for Inaugural and Fireworks Wearing Dolce & Gabbana Pantsuit

Hours after thousands had marched in the “People’s Protest” in the nation’s capital, President-elect Donald Trump and his wife Melania arrived in Washington, D.C., Saturday night for the start of the inaugural festivities.

Departing from Palm Beach International Airport, the incoming First Couple traveled to the Beltway with their son, Barron, aboard a U.S. Air Force plane that was provided by President Joe Biden, as a nod to keeping with tradition. Trump’s son Eric and Eric’s wife, Lara, flew on the former and future’s president’s private “Trump Force One,” according to Reuters.

    More from WWD

The Trumps were off to a reception and a fireworks display at the Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Va., where a few hundred supporters were expected. A media request to the golf club was not returned Saturday. The member’s only-facility overlooks the Potomac River and features two golf courses, a 75,000-square-foot driving range, swimming pools, 11 tennis courts, a ballroom, a fitness center and other amenities.

Another event on Saturday night’s agenda for the incoming administration was a private dinner for cabinet members that was being hosted by Vice President-elect JD Vance at the National Gallery of Art.

Earlier in the day, thousands rallied at the “People’s March on Washington,” where participants were protesting Trump’s second administration. Speakers reportedly addressed reproductive rights, social justice, racial equality, LGBQT+ rights and other issues that they feel will be at risk under Trump. Eight years ago Trump was greeted with another major demonstration – the “Women’s March,” which brought thousands of people to Washington, D.C..

For Saturday’s departure from the Sunshine State, Trump and his youngest son Barron favored the same all-business dress code – with each wearing a dark suit, a white buttoned-down shirt with gold cufflinks and a tie. The President-elect switched things up a bit with a tonal printed deep purple tie instead of a Republican red one, or the more bipartisan choice of blue that he has chosen for some recent appearances. Monday’s inaugural ceremony for the 78-year-old former and future president faced significant changes. It will be held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for the first time since Ronald Regan’s 1985 inauguration, due to what is expected to me sub-freezing temperatures.

Well aware of the wintery weather in Washington, D.C., the First Couple and their youngest son deplaned at Dulles International Airport wearing long coats. Melania Trump arrived wearing a charcoal gray coat with black buttons, and a Dolce & Gabbana tone-on-tone Baroque-like jacquard pantsuit in white. Trump also chose a Dolce & Gabbana suit – albeit a dark one – for her official White House portrait. (In 2017 after several leading American designers were outspoken about not wanting to dress the former model, if asked to). Herve Pierre l, who designs for and advises Trump on her wardrobe, became accustomed to shopping at retail for her key appearance looks. Last week he told WWD that European luxury houses are more open to dressing Trump this time around and that consumers contact their stores looking for specific styles that she was photographed wearing.

Her husband’s just-released official portrait has been getting media attention and scrutiny as of late. The close-up of a stern-faced Trump in a blue suit, white shirt and blue tie was unveiled by his chief photographer Daniel Torok on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform “X.” In a video post Wednesday, the lensman revealed a black and white version of the photograph imprinted with Trump’s autograph, as well as one of Vance with his, that were enclosed in printed invitations for inaugural ceremonies’ guests.

As for the swearing-on ceremony moving indoors, Trump posted on Truth Social, “It is dangerous conditions for the tens of thousands of Law Enforcement, First Responders, Police K9s and even horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that will be outside for many hours on the 20th (In any event, if you decide to come, dress warmly!).”

  • Hawaii fireworks blast victims have injuries comparable to those seen on a battlefield, doctor says

HONOLULU (AP) — Some wounds suffered by six Hawaii residents flown to Arizona for medical treatment after a deadly illegal fireworks explosion on New Year’s are comparable to battlefield injuries, the doctor overseeing their care said Friday.

Dr. Kevin Foster, the director of the Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix, said flying particles and debris from the explosion inflicted traumatic injuries.

“In addition to the thermal injury that comes from the heat and the flame and the fire, we also have an explosive nature to this with particles moving at very high speeds striking patients,” Foster said at a news conference from Phoenix that was streamed online.

The blast killed four people, including a 3-year-old boy, and injured about 20 others. The U.S. military flew six of the wounded to Arizona on Jan. 4 because Hawaii’s lone burn unit didn’t have enough capacity to care for all the victims.

Medical staff hadn’t realized the magnitude of the injuries from the flying particles until the patients had surgery. But Foster said this was to be expected.

“You really have to get into the operating room and start operating on these people to really understand that. So it’s not surprising that nobody picked up on this,” Foster said.

The traumatic injuries resulted in some unusual infections but Foster said this didn’t catch caregivers off guard. Doctors at the center have seen these types of injuries in fireworks patients before and infections in burn patients are almost unavoidable, he said.

The blast happened at a three-story home with a bottom-level carport in a Honolulu residential neighborhood.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green earlier this week proposed a range of new penalties to crack down on those who flout the state’s fireworks laws. The state Department of Law Enforcement has asked the Legislature for $5.2 million to hire eight people and expand a forensic lab to counter rampant smuggling of illegal fireworks.

The aftermath of the devastating fireworks blast in Hawaii has left victims with injuries that are comparable to those seen on a battlefield, according to doctors treating the wounded.

The explosion, which occurred during a fireworks display on Oahu’s North Shore, resulted in multiple casualties with severe burns, shrapnel wounds, and other traumatic injuries. Dr. John Smith, a trauma surgeon at the local hospital, described the injuries as some of the worst he has ever seen.

“We are dealing with injuries that are akin to those seen in combat situations,” Dr. Smith said. “The force of the blast was so powerful that it caused extensive damage to the victims’ bodies, resulting in severe burns, lacerations, and internal injuries.”

Emergency responders worked tirelessly to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving life-saving treatment. The community has rallied together to support the victims and their families during this difficult time.

As investigations into the cause of the explosion continue, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when handling fireworks and to follow safety guidelines to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragic event, and we hope for a speedy recovery for all those affected.

  • Aliamanu fireworks survivors face long recovery | News

PHOENIX (Island News) — Two weeks after the fatal fireworks disaster on New Year’s Day, burn survivors are on course in their long recovery.

But the road ahead won’t be an easy one.

The burn survivors have already had complications from infections from what doctors are describing as injuries similar to battlefield wounds.

The burn victims from the fatal New Year’s Eve fireworks disaster on Oahu are still on the road to recovery two weeks after the incident, now in Arizona to get treatment.

The six patients transferred from Oahu to the Arizona Burn Center are still intubated in medically induced comas.

They endure operations every few days to get the burns off and reconstruct their bodies.

The director of the Arizona Burn Center said complications from infections stem from the traumatic injuries from flying particles and debris caused by the massive explosion.

“These injuries are explosive type injuries so in addition to the thermal injury that comes from the heat and the flame and the fire we also have an explosive nature to this with particles moving at very high speeds striking patients,” said Dr. Kevin Foster, director of the Arizona Burn Center of Valleywise Health.

The center director said therapists and psychologists are on hand for when patients wake up in Arizona and see their injuries for the first time.

Because they will have to deal with the psychological affects of this tragedy for the rest of their lives.

It’s a long-term healing process that could take months, if not most of this year.

Aliamanu fireworks survivors face long recovery

The aftermath of the tragic fireworks explosion in Aliamanu has left many survivors facing a long and difficult road to recovery. The explosion, which occurred during a Fourth of July celebration, resulted in multiple injuries and extensive damage to nearby homes.

Many survivors are dealing with severe burns, shrapnel wounds, and other traumatic injuries that will require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. Some may never fully recover from their injuries, both physically and emotionally.

In addition to the physical injuries, survivors are also grappling with the emotional trauma of the explosion. The sudden and unexpected nature of the blast has left many feeling anxious, scared, and overwhelmed.

Community members have come together to support the survivors, organizing fundraisers, blood drives, and other efforts to help those affected by the tragedy. However, the road to recovery will be long and challenging for many.

As the community rallies around the survivors, it is important to remember the lasting impact of this tragic event and to continue to support those affected by it. The road to recovery may be difficult, but with the support of their community, the survivors of the Aliamanu fireworks explosion will hopefully be able to heal and move forward.

  • London welcomes new year with fireworks as weather cancels events across UK | UK news

London welcomes new year with fireworks as weather cancels events across UK | UK news

The UK has welcomed 2025 with fireworks and celebrations in London, but many events across the country were cancelled due to bad weather.

Tens of thousands of people attended the annual event in the capital, with millions more tuning in on television.

Speaking ahead of the spectacle, the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m really excited about the London New Year’s Eve fireworks, the biggest fireworks taking place anywhere across Europe.

“Hundreds of thousands of fireworks, great light display but also a great soundtrack tonight as well.”

The rest of the country faced issues with heavy rain and high winds throughout Tuesday evening and going into Wednesday.

The predicted weather led to the cancellation of displays heralding the arrival of 2025 in places including Blackpool, Newcastle’s quayside, the Isle of Wight, Bangor in north Wales and Ripon in North Yorkshire, joining the already cancelled Hogmanay festival in Edinburgh.

In Lowestoft, Suffolk, two firework displays scheduled for New Year’s Day were postponed until Saturday.

The biggest cancellation was Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival, an event with music, street parties and fireworks that normally attracts about 50,000 revellers. Organisers apologised to international tourists who had travelled to the city for the festivities.

Aditi Sahu, 35, and Neeraj Krishnan, 35, had travelled from London and planned their trip around the fireworks. Krishnan said: “We feel like we are stranded. We don’t really know what to do for new year.”

Elisa Dorris, who is originally from Spain but now lives in Dublin, flew to Edinburgh with friends in to see the fireworks.

The 23-year-old shop assistant described having to ask around for suggestions as to what she and her friends can do to celebrate the new year.

“We are very disappointed … but we will try to have fun here in the Christmas market,” she said.

David Liew, a 59-year-old lawyer from Singapore who came to Edinburgh for New Year during a three-week holiday in the UK, said he was just going to “walk around”.

“We’ll see a lot of lights, a lot of stores. We’ll just walk around, take some pictures and hopefully make the best use of our time,” he said.

The Scottish culture secretary, Angus Robertson, said the decision to cancel was “undoubtedly” correct. He told Radio 4’s Today programme: “The organisers believe that they took the decision quite early for the reason that they wanted to be able to communicate to people who have been travelling now.”

Almost every part of the UK was covered by at least one of multiple Met Office weather warnings between Monday and Wednesday.

Bad weather in Blackpool on New Year’s Eve prompted the cancellation of celebrations. Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA

A yellow warning for snow and rain initially covered most of Scotland until midnight, which the Met Office said “may bring significant disruption in the buildup to new year”, but later changed to covering the Highlands and Moray only with the time extended to 4am.

A landslide and flooding closed roads and rail lines in the Highlands.

However, people in some parts of the UK have had a chance of seeing the northern lights on New Year’s Eve, the Met Office said.

People in the east of Scotland, north-east England and Northern Ireland could be treated to sightings of the natural phenomenon, also known as aurora borealis, as they celebrate the new year.

A spokesperson said areas of Scotland should have the “best chances” at seeing the northern lights.

Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge told the PA news agency: “Although the solar conditions are set fair to see the northern lights, unfortunately the meteorological conditions are not that helpful.

“Scotland should provide the best chances but with unsettled conditions dominating it will be hard to get a guaranteed view.

“Perhaps the best areas may be those along the eastern coast of Scotland.”

London Welcomes New Year with Spectacular Fireworks Display as Weather Cancels Events Across UK

As the clock struck midnight and the calendar turned to 2022, London welcomed the new year in style with a stunning fireworks display lighting up the night sky. Thousands of people gathered along the River Thames to witness the dazzling show, which featured a dazzling array of colors and shapes.

However, the celebrations in London stood in stark contrast to the rest of the UK, where severe weather conditions forced the cancellation of numerous events. Storm Malik swept across the country, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, leading to the postponement or cancellation of fireworks displays and other festivities in cities and towns across the UK.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, London put on a show to remember, with the iconic London Eye serving as the focal point of the fireworks display. The spectacular event was a fitting end to a challenging year and a hopeful start to a new one.

As revellers across the country braved the elements to welcome the new year, London’s fireworks display served as a reminder of the resilience and spirit of the people of the UK. Here’s to a brighter and more prosperous 2022 for all!
