New Year’s Eve 2024: Chicago gets ready to ring in new year with fireworks along Riverwalk, Navy Pier

CHICAGO (WLS) — The countdown is on to 2025 and many celebrations are ahead here in Chicago.

New Year’s Eve preps were well underway earlier Tuesday at Doolin’s party supply store, a third generation family-owned business.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“It’s one of the busiest times of the year, it’s like the Super Bowl for us,” Nicholas Doolin said.

The folks at Doolin’s party supply store were blowing up balloons and stocking shelves full of supplies for your home parties.

‘ABC7 Presents: Countdown Chicago 2025’ longest-running New Year’s Eve show in Chicago airs Dec. 31

“We have party kits, we have hats, we’ve got derby’s, we’ve got fedora’s, we’ve got top hats, we’ve got noisemakers, we’ve got confetti cannons. You name it we’ve got it,” Nicholas Doolin said.

Party stores and liquor stores were extra busy on Tuesday as many stocked up on party supplies and bubbly.

“We’re going to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a bottle of Dom Perignon, so we’re excited,” said Keaton Docchio.

The DuPage Children’s Museum held a New Year’s celebration midday, giving hundreds of parents a much needed break.

“Get them nice and tired. Yeah, get their fun out, so that we can have fun later,” said mom Michelle McConico. “It’s all hands on for the kids. They get to learn so much by doing rather just looking at an exhibit.”

    It was a confetti-filled event with marshmallow snowman-making, picture-taking and crown-wearing.

“Running the clock at noon is a lot more accessible to some of our smaller friends than to our adult friends, right? So the adults hopefully have a babysitter, and they can go out and have fun tonight?” said DuPage Children’s Museum Public Programs Manager Shamra Fallon.

The museum is a sensory-friendly space, so if the confetti was too much, kids could head downstairs to a quiet room, or they could take in the new year with bubbles.

“This is their fun, and then we get our fun, which is relaxing,” said mom Evelyn Carrillo.

Chicago’s New Year’s Eve celebrations include a custom projection with Art on The Mart along the riverfront beginning at 10 p.m. with a fireworks display at midnight that can be viewed from six bridges along the Chicago River.

“My mom and sister are visiting, we are going to go to the Riverwalk and watch the fireworks and have so much fun. It’s freezing cold, but we are so excited,” said Galit Roffe.

At 11:55 p.m., a clock will be projected on the Merchandise Mart’s facade and will begin counting down to midnight, when fireworks will be launched from bridges along the Chicago River.

“We are going to dinner with our family, and then we are going to watch the fireworks,” said Natalie Rivera.

For Chris Burgos, it is a double celebration: His birthday plus ringing in the new year.

“We are here for my 40th birthday to celebrate with my parents and my cousins,” Burgos said. “We are staying here at the hotel. We are going to hang out. We have the room decorated and watch the fireworks.”

The city says the best viewing for the show is along the Chicago River from Upper Wacker Drive from McClurg Court to Franklin Street.

Also joining in on the festivities is RPM Events. They are hosting a ticketed event on Tuesday night, and guests will have front-row seats to the show along the Riverwalk.

“We don’t want anyone to not have a party to go to on New Year’s Eve. We are all inclusive. We will sell you a ticket at the door. It will be food, beverage, champagne toast, and fireworks at midnight,” said RPM Restaurants Director of Events Shannon Binder.

Fireworks will be launched from the the Orleans Street, La Salle Drive, Clark Street, Dearborn Street, State Street and Columbus Drive bridges.

The following street closures are planned:

    • Franklin/Orleans from Lake Street to Wacker Drive (noon to 4 a.m. on January 1)

    • The Franklin Street Bridge over the Chicago River (9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on January 1)

    • Wacker Drive from Lake Street to Wells Street (9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on January 1)

    • Note that additional streets and bridges may close as the countdown to midnight draws closer.

The bridges will be closed to traffic from 11:45 p.m. until 12:15 a.m. and additional bridges may close as the countdown to midnight approaches.

The Riverwalk will also be closed beginning at 11 p.m. with only a section from Wells Street to Orleans Street open until 12:15 a.m. for spectators.

Navy Pier will also ring in the new year with a 15-minute firework show there, as well.

The NHL Winter Classic also took center stage at the iconic Wrigley Field earlier Tuesday afternoon.

A free pre-game festival got underway at the Cubs parking lot until 3:30 p.m. with food, giveaways, interactive games and attractions, and the opportunity to take a picture with the greatest trophy in sports, The Stanley Cup!

“This is where a lot of our fans come and get pumped up for the game, whether you have a ticket to the game today or just to the neighborhood, you want to be a part of the hockey action. We have so many activities here,” Vince Granieri, NHL director of events, said.

The Office of Emergency Management will be monitoring all citywide events, traffic, and weather conditions.

If you plan to come downtown, might want to get here early. The CTA will also offer free rides starting at 10 p.m.

Chicago police are reminding the public to be on their best behavior and celebrate safely.

“Every year, we see shots fired into the air. Not only is this a careless act, it is illegal and dangerous,” said CPD Supt. Larry Snelling.

And with a few hours left, some already have their resolutions set.

“I’m looking forward to spend time with my kids, because they are all in different states. When I have time to share with them, it is a blessing, so that’s what I’m looking forward to the next year or two,” said Claudia Murciano.

  • City of Reading and Mayor Morán Announce New Year’s Eve Fireworks Celebration

City of Reading and Mayor Morán Announce New Year’s Eve Fireworks Celebration

    From City of Reading

The City of Reading, in collaboration with Berks Festival Inc., is excited to host the 28th annual New Year’s Eve Firework Celebration. The fireworks display will take place at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, offering a family-friendly time for residents and visitors to ring in the New Year together.

Mayor Eddie Morán expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Thanks to the leadership of Fire Chief Stoudt and Fire Marshal Searfoss, we can celebrate safely this year. After the Neversink Mountain fire in November, we weren’t sure if fireworks would be possible. However, with the burn ban lifted earlier this month, more precipitation, and careful deliberation from the fire office, it was deemed safe to move forward. I’m thrilled to see the New Year’s Eve Fireworks Celebration, a cherished tradition that unites our community. Let’s come together to reflect on the past year and look ahead to a bright future filled with new possibilities.”

William Koch Sr., CPA, President of Berks Festival Inc., shared his excitement, adding, “Berks Festivals is honored to once again spearhead the organization of the First Night celebratory fireworks from Mount Penn. As we turn our gaze upward, we welcome the New Year with hope and optimism for what lies ahead.”

The City reminds all residents and visitors that setting off unpermitted fireworks within 150 feet of structures is both illegal and hazardous. Please celebrate responsibly to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve for all.

The City of Reading and Berks Festival Inc. would like to thank its sponsors for making this possible: City of Reading, 830AM WEEU, Tompkins Community Bank, Greater Reading Chamber Alliance, WFMZ-TV, Kozloff Stoudt Attorneys, Penn Entertainment Inc., DoubleTree by Hilton Reading, White Star Tours, Yeager Supply Inc., William G. Koch & Associates, Mount Penn Preserve Partnership, Brentwood Industries, and Boscov’s.

New Year’s is being celebrated across world – including in London, where the fireworks are set to go ahead despite bad weather forcing the cancellations of events across the UK.

Millions of Britons fear a New Year’s Eve washout as storms heading south look set to wreak havoc, with weather warnings issued for nearly every part of the country.

Heavy rain, snowstorms, 70 mph gales and even landslides are causing travel disruption, flooding and celebration cancellations, with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay outdoor events already scrapped.

However, while London’s City Hall has said it is “closely monitoring” the weather, Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has confirmed the capital’s fireworks display will go ahead. Despite the 41mph gusts forecast, thousands are expected to flock to Big Ben and millions more to watch the live broadcast from around the world.

Network Rail Scotland said they were dealing with 15 flooding incidents on the Far North Line and a landslip near Brora on 31 December, while rising river levels have led to closures of the Dalguise viaduct lines and the Highland Main Line remains closed in Kingussie.

“Do not travel” warnings have been issued as rivers are feared to burst their banks in other areas of Scotland.

Three days of weather warnings are in place across the country, with heavy rain set to turn to blusters of snow showers on Wednesday, which is forecast to continue through the night in Scotland.

    Happy New Year!

It is officially 2025 in the UK.

Fireworks can be heard exploding across the country as Big Ben chimes midnight.

Heavy rain to lash parts of UK to kick off 2025

Heavy rain will lash parts of the UK to begin 2025 after New Year’s Eve celebrations across the country were cancelled.

Many faced heavy rain, strong winds and even snow in some parts, leading to widespread disruption on Tuesday.

An amber warning for heavy rain has been put in place across parts of North-West England until 9am on New Year’s Day.

The Met Office warning stretches from Settle in the Yorkshire Dales across to Preston and down to parts of the Peak District.

The warning states that heavy rain is “likely to lead to disruption including flooding in some locations” with a chance some places could see more than 10cm of rain.

Winds of up to 60mph are forecast across much of England and Wales all day on Wednesday, with gusts of 75mph likely around coastal areas and hills, according to the Met Office.

Rain turning to snow on New Year’s Day is likely to cause travel disruption, particularly on roads and railways across Grampian, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and the Highlands & Eilean Siar, the Met Office said.

Starmer: 2025 a chance to rediscover the great nation that we are

The UK faces a “year of rebuilding” while also “rediscovering the great nation that we are” in 2025, according to Sir Keir Starmer.

The Prime Minister used his first new year’s message since entering Downing Street to reflect on a “year of change” in 2024, although joked this did not extend to football as the England men’s team experienced “another agonisingly close shave” by losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

He added his Labour administration has begun the “work of change” since winning the general election in July and pointed to an increase in the minimum wage, clean energy projects and NHS investment as examples.

Hogmanay tourists having to quickly find alternatives to cancelled fireworks

With hours to go before the end of 2024, tourists who travelled to Edinburgh in the hope of experiencing the Hogmanay fireworks have described having to quickly find other ways to celebrate the new year.

The street party and fireworks display over Edinburgh Castle were cancelled on Monday afternoon due to a Met Office yellow weather warning, which at the time covered most of Scotland throughout Hogmanay before the warning area was cut back to the Highlands and Moray.

Elisa Dorris, who is originally from Spain but now lives in Dublin, flew to Edinburgh with friends in order to see the fireworks.

The 23-year-old shop assistant described having to ask around for suggestions as to what she and her friends can do to celebrate the new year.

She said: “We are very disappointed … but we will try to have fun here in the Christmas market. We will try our best to have fun this night.

“So we have been asking people about what we can do, and they say that they have pubs in Victoria Street, and the people are going to go out, because it’s a lot of people in the same situation. So we think that we are going to do that, stay in the streets, in the pubs.”

David Liew, a 59-year-old lawyer from Singapore who came to Edinburgh for New Year during a three-week holiday in the UK, said: “We’ll just walk around, take some pictures and hopefully make the best use of our time.”

Mr Liew added that he could understand the decision to call off the fireworks, but said they should be put back on now that the weather had turned out better than expected.

“We are pretty disappointed. We were just informed, I think, this morning, but I think it’s due to the weather. But when I look around now, I think the weather is fine, and I think the celebrations should resume.”

Met Office issues new amber weather warning for heavy rain

An amber weather warning for heavy rain has been put in place across parts of North West England until 9am on New Year’s Day.

The Met Office alert stretches from Settle in the Yorkshire Dales across to Preston and down to parts of the Peak District.

The warning states that heavy rain is “likely to lead to disruption including flooding in some locations” with a chance some places could see more than 10cm of rain.

Dazzling New Year’s Eve fireworks come with a terrible environmental price

Fireworks have been lit in celebration for thousands of years, and this New Year’s Eve is no different.

But, while Americans and millions around the world ring in the new year with dazzling displays of multi-colored chemical reactions, they may not realize their damaging impact on their environment and ecosystems.

“Looking at the composition of these particles and which ones may be the most toxic to human health, fireworks are in the mix with particles from coal-fired power plants, which appear to be the worst,” Terry Gordon, a professor at New York University, told the publication Delaware Currents last July.

UK sees in 2025 with spectacular London fireworks display as weather chaos cancels events elsewhere

The UK has greeted 2025 on a night when weather disrupted planned celebrations across Scotland and northern England, while crowds in London gathered for a firework display that went ahead despite the conditions.

Crowds had gathered in central London for the traditional display that centres around the London Eye on the River Thames.

London’s mayor Sadiq Khan, announcing that the event would go ahead as planned, said: “I’m really excited about the London New Year’s Eve fireworks, the biggest fireworks taking place anywhere across Europe. Hundreds of thousands of fireworks, great light display but also a great soundtrack tonight as well.”

Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenoch told voters to “Watch this space” as she said the Conservative party faced “a long term project” of renewal and that “Things may be bumpy along the way.”

Television coverage in the UK is switching to the fireworks in London …

By the way, if you think I am freewheeling a bit on the live blog here, Sophie Ellis-Bexter has just introduced on stage on BBC One a giant full-sized resin horse replica face-painted as David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane character, which she claimed she bought online during lockdown. I feel safe that I will not be doing anything as weird as that.

As we build up to midnight in the UK, here are some more striking photographs of new year celebrations from different countries around the world.

Robbie Williams has also been working hard this evening. He was the top billed interviewee on the Graham Norton Show on BBC One earlier tonight, and was also living it up headlining ABC’s celebrations in Sydney. I should have roped him in to help with the live blog too.

While I know that there will be readers of this blog from all over the world at the moment – and I notice some of our Australian readers in the comments are already up and several hours into the new year – with it coming up to less than half hour to go until midnight in the UK and me being based in London, I’m going to put my focus there for a little while.

I’ve just put the Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s New Year’s Eve Disco Party on BBC One on in the background. She is not entirely my personal cup of tea to be honest, but I actually saw her live the other week supporting the Human League at Wembley Arena, and I have to say I was left in awe at her ability as a support act to get a whole arena up and dancing and signing along. It was like being at a Joe Wicks’ workout, but with Abba cover versions.

Here are some more pictures from around the world as cities see in the new year.

Keir Starmer New Year’s message vows to rebuild Britain as Labour did after second world war

    Kiran Stacey

Kiran Stacey is a political correspondent based in Westminster for the Guardian

Keir Starmer has promised to rebuild Britain as Labour did after the second world war as he enters a pivotal year for his premiership.

The prime minister said in his prerecorded new year message that 2025 would be a year of rebuilding, with his government looking to turn the corner after a turbulent first six months in power.

Starmer invoked the forthcoming 80th anniversary of VE Day in May as he compared the task his government faces with that the Attlee government faced in 1945.

Starmer said: “That is what we will be focusing on: a year of rebuilding. But also, rediscovering the great nation that we are, a nation that gets things done no matter how hard or tough the circumstances.

“We will have time to reflect on that this year, a chance, with the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day, to cherish the greatest victories of this country and the greatest generation that achieved it.

“But that victory, and indeed the peace and the prosperity that followed, all rested on that same foundation we must rebuild today. The security of working people, that is the purpose of this government, the goal of our plan for change. And we will push it forward in 2025.”

You can read more of Kiran Stacey’s report here: Keir Starmer vows to rebuild Britain as Labour did after second world war

Met Éireann has also weather warnings in place, with Cork and Kerry told to expect “persistent rain”, potentially causing “localised flooding” and “hazardous travelling conditions”.

  • Hong Kong New Year’s Eve Fireworks To Premiere Dazzling New Effects

Hong Kong New Year’s Eve Fireworks To Premiere Dazzling New Effects

Among New Year’s Eve fireworks extravaganzas, the show over Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour delivers one of the world’s biggest bangs.

This year, the multi-sensory show has been amped, incorporating new effects designed to dazzle. The event begins before midnight when shooting stars are fired from high rises lining the harbor, timed at 15-minute intervals beginning at 11 p.m.

The breadth and scope of the pyrotechnical feat is one of the city’s largest draws over the holidays.

    Hong Kong’s New Multi-Hued Fireworks

“Multi-hued fireworks will add new texture in this year’s edition of the ‘New Year Count Down,’ said Wilson Mao, CEO of Pyromagic Multimedia Productions in an email. “We will incorporate a vibrant array of color smoke willows in shades of red, green, yellow, blue, purple, and orange. While these color smoke willows won’t ignite, we’ll simultaneously launch a multitude of strobing stars to illuminate the smoke, resulting in a breathtaking facade of colored smoke layers that will light up Victoria Harbour.”

Smoke willows consist of trails cascading down from a central point. They’re often used as a fireworks finale in the form of sparkling light. After nearly 12 minutes of over-the-top “wow” fireworks that launches at midnight, what Mao describes should be a stunner.

This year’s theme is “The Symphony of Happiness,” which is divided into five movements representing fire, earth, wood, water and metal.

    The Frenetic Grand Finale

The grand finale, termed “Light of Future,” will be a frenetic explosion of bright multi-hued fireworks with iridescent clouds expanding out, lighting up Victoria Harbour. Mao hinted at other surprises for the night, perhaps during the finale.

You can watch a livestream of the show on the Discover Hong Kong YouTube channel.

Setting up and launching the show involves an intricate system that must be perfectly timed. The fireworks are set off from five barges and 16 pontoons positioned outside Victoria Harbour. The Pyromagic Multimedia Productions team includes marine experts and pyrotechnics professionals skilled at handling variables, the most vexing of which can be windy winter weather.

Launch mortars for display shells are buried in 20-foot sand troughs placed on flat-top barges. Other systems are mounted on the barges and pontoons.

Pyromagic has orchestrated most of Hong Kong’s large multi-media events, including the Tsing Ma Bridge Opening in April 1997 and the annual Chinese New Year fireworks display. Also: the annual China National Day fireworks display.

Where To View The Hong Kong Fireworks

There are numerous prime vantage points along Victoria Harbour to view the fireworks, many with audio systems that will play a soundtrack that coordinates with the rocket blasts. The viewing spots are located on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon: West Kowloon Cultural District, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, among others.

Canada’s pop duo Crash Adams is this year’s guest performer: Rafaele (Crash) Massarelli and Vince (Adams) Sasso, from Toronto, Ontario. As a Juno Award nominee for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2024, the pair has written, sung, mixed and mastered all of their songs since the group formed in 2019.

Other Hong Kong holiday events include “Christmas Town,” a blinged-out festive display in the West Kowloon Cultural District. It’s part of Hong Kong Winterfest held from November 22 to January 1, 2025.

Hong Kong also hosts the free Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival from November 13 to January 12, 2025.

Hong Kong is set to ring in the New Year in spectacular fashion with a dazzling display of fireworks that will feature new and exciting effects. The annual fireworks show, which takes place over Victoria Harbor, is one of the most anticipated events of the year in the city.

This year, the organizers have promised to deliver a show like never before, with new lighting effects, choreography, and music that will leave spectators in awe. The fireworks will light up the night sky in a mesmerizing display that will be visible from all around the harbor.

Thousands of people are expected to gather along the waterfront to watch the fireworks show, which has become a tradition for many families in Hong Kong. The event is a symbol of hope and renewal, as the city looks forward to the year ahead.

So if you’re in Hong Kong on New Year’s Eve, be sure to head down to Victoria Harbor to witness the stunning fireworks display that promises to kick off the new year in style. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

  • Hong Kong welcomes 2025 as hundreds of thousands gather for harbour fireworks

Hong Kong welcomes 2025 as hundreds of thousands gather for harbour fireworks

Hundreds of thousands of revellers packed both sides of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour for a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve, as they expressed hopes for health and happiness in 2025.

By 9pm, celebrations across the city had drawn more than 143,000 visitors, of whom 108,000, or 75 per cent, were from mainland China. The number of mainland visitors was only about half of the 195,888 for the previous New Year’s Eve, a Sunday, when 227,000 non-local arrivals were recorded.

Themed “The Symphony of Happiness”, the countdown celebration began at 11pm with four sets of fireworks and a star-studded musical and dance performance, before the main 12-minute display started at midnight.

From 11pm, fireworks in the shape of “shooting stars” were launched every 15 minutes from three buildings on Hong Kong Island, leaving revellers in awe.

Cantopop boy band Mirror, girl group Collar and Canadian pop music duo Crash Adams performed on the viewing deck of the Cultural Centre.

The fireworks, choreographed by Liu Lin, who oversaw the display for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, took inspiration from the five natural elements in Chinese culture – fire, earth, wood, water and metal.

Authorities earlier predicted 380,000 people would gather in Tsim Sha Tsui for the show, a crowd similar in size to last year’s.

As the clock struck midnight, Hong Kong welcomed 2025 in spectacular fashion as hundreds of thousands of people gathered along the harbour to watch the dazzling fireworks display.

The iconic skyline was illuminated with bursts of color and light, creating a breathtaking backdrop for the celebration. Families, friends, and tourists alike came together to witness the spectacular show and usher in the new year with joy and excitement.

As the fireworks lit up the night sky, cheers and applause filled the air, creating a festive atmosphere that was truly unforgettable. The sound of laughter and music echoed through the streets as people danced and celebrated the start of a new year.

The event was not only a time for revelry, but also a moment to reflect on the past year and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. With hope and optimism in their hearts, the people of Hong Kong welcomed 2025 with open arms and a sense of unity.

As the last remnants of the fireworks faded away, the city was left aglow with a sense of promise and possibility. The new year had arrived, and Hong Kong was ready to embrace it with all the energy and enthusiasm it could muster.

Here’s to a bright and prosperous 2025 for the vibrant city of Hong Kong! Happy New Year!
