  • Five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas commits to USC

Eric Musselman knew well before he took the reins at USC that recruiting the Southland and its wellspring of hoops talent would be essential to his success with the Trojans.

“We have to recruit L.A.,” Musselman said after a game in December. “And not just recruit them a little bit. We have to recruit them relentlessly.”

That unrelenting approach on the recruiting trail had yet to fully resonate until Thursday, when five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas, one of the top uncommitted prospects in this year’s class, committed to the Trojans.

Arenas’ commitment marks the biggest recruiting victory of the Musselman era, the first five-star prospect to endorse the coach’s vision in L.A.

Arenas, the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, is the No. 10 recruit in this year’s class and the second-ranked prospect in the state, according to 247 Sports. He picked USC over Arizona, among other schools.

“It felt like the best fit,” Arenas said while announcing his commitment on his father’s podcast, “Gil’s Arena.” “Seeing what USC was like, it made me feel special.”

Arenas, a 6-foot-6 guard, was named to the McDonald’s All-American game this week after reclassifying to become a senior. He’s averaging 31.8 points for Chatsworth in his third season for the Chancellors. The family decided to enroll him in a City Section public school rather than a private school in the hope it would help him improve as a leader and player facing double and triple teams.

Gilbert Arenas attended Grant High and Arizona, so USC’s success in recruiting Alijah might come as a surprise considering his father’s Arizona ties.

Arenas gives USC a trio of prospects in this year’s class, alongside top-50 guard Jerry Easter of Missouri and four-star St. John Bosco guard Elzie Harrington. They’ll join a roster next season that will look decidedly different. More than half the team will have exhausted its eligibility, making it even more critical that Musselman establish a foothold in Southern California.

With Arenas’ commitment, he’s on the right track.

Chatsworth High School standout Alijah Arenas has officially committed to play basketball for the USC Trojans, bringing his five-star talent to the Pac-12 powerhouse.

Arenas, a 6’4″ guard known for his scoring ability and defensive prowess, chose USC over several other top programs who were vying for his commitment. With his exceptional skill set and basketball IQ, he is expected to make an immediate impact for the Trojans.

USC head coach Andy Enfield expressed his excitement about adding Arenas to the roster, stating, “Alijah is a dynamic player who can score from anywhere on the court. His skill set and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our program, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at USC.”

Arenas’ commitment is a major win for the Trojans and further solidifies their status as a contender in the Pac-12. USC fans can look forward to seeing Alijah Arenas light up the scoreboard and make a name for himself in the collegiate basketball world.

  • Alijah Arenas, son of Gilbert Arenas, pledges to USC on father’s podcast as Trojans land five-star SG

Five-star shooting guard Alijah Arenas has committed to USC, he announced Thursday. 247Sports’ No. 1-ranked shooting guard in the class of 2025 and the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas revealed his school choice on his father’s Gil’s Arena Podcast.

During the appearance, the 6-foot-6 senior from Chatsworth (California) High School FaceTimed Trojans coach Eric Musselman and committed to him live on camera.

Prior to his commitment, Arenas visited both USC and Arizona — where the elder Arenas played — but chose to remain local for college.

“For me, (USC) felt like the best fit,” Arenas said on the podcast. “For everybody that supported me on this journey, just helped me see my path. Then going on campus and seeing how USC was, like, it made me special. I talked to the coach, and seeing what I could possibly be, it was amazing for me. I think I could really go and play for USC.”

The third player to commit to USC during the 2025 recruiting cycle, Arenas joins four-star guards Jerry Easter and Elzie Harrington in a class that now ranks No. 7 overall, according to 247Sports’ industry-generated composite team rankings.

247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein says USC is getting a big-time offensive talent.

“Arenas is a versatile scoring threat. He doesn’t always separate with his first move, but he’s elite with his secondary moves and has a wide variety of counters in his bag. He also shoots an easy ball from long range with soft, natural touch, despite dipping his left shoulder and twisting into his release,” Finkelstein wrote in his scouting report of Arenas. “Defensively, his size, length, hands and court coverage are all assets, but his lateral quickness and ability to pressure the ball have fluctuated over the years as his body has evolved.

“The bottom line is that Arenas is a glaring talent in the midst of a late growth spurt and has significant long-term potential.”

Originally a member of the class of 2026, Arenas recently reclassified in hopes of following in his father’s footsteps to the NBA as soon as possible. Part of that process now includes playing for a coach under whom the elder Arenas flourished early in his career with the Golden State Warriors.

Though he’s an exceptionally gifted offensive player, Arenas says he’s just looking to be coachable upon his arrival at USC.

“I feel like the best and the biggest step for me is being coachable. Being willing to learn any and everything that I can.”

Alijah Arenas, son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, has made a big decision in his basketball career by pledging to play for the University of Southern California (USC) on his father’s podcast. The Trojans have also landed a five-star shooting guard, further bolstering their roster for the upcoming season.

In a special episode of “The No Chill Podcast”, hosted by Gilbert Arenas, Alijah announced his commitment to USC, following in his father’s footsteps by choosing to play for the Trojans. The younger Arenas is a highly touted prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, known for his scoring ability and basketball IQ.

This commitment is a major win for USC, as they continue to build a strong recruiting class and solidify their position as a top program in college basketball. With the addition of a five-star shooting guard alongside Alijah, the Trojans are poised for success in the upcoming seasons.

Fans of USC and college basketball enthusiasts alike are excited to see what the future holds for Alijah Arenas and the Trojans as they look to make a splash in the NCAA tournament and compete for a national championship. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the world of college basketball.

  • Five-star forward Caleb Wilson cuts list to three and sets commitment date

    (Photo: 247Sports)

The nation’s most speculated recruiting battle is finally coming to an end. Caleb Wilson announced Friday on the “College Basketball Show” that he has cut his list down to a final three and has set his commitment date.

The No. 8 overall recruit in the country said he has cut his list down to  Ohio State, Kentucky and North Carolina, and will announce his decision on Thursday, Jan. 23.

“I’ll be committing next Thursday, it’ll be on a huge platform and I’m excited for it,” he said on the show.

The 6-foot-9 power forward out of Atlanta (Ga.) Holy Innocents Episcopal School has been in the midst of one of the most monitored and discussed recruitments this cycle. He outlined what stands out about each of his three finalists.

Ohio State: “Coach Diebler, he’s a great coach, I really enjoyed my visit there, it was extremely fun and exciting. They have a great guard in Bruce Thornton. I feel like that’s going to be very important, the guard I play with next year, so that’s why I like Ohio State.”

Kentucky: “Mark Pope is a great guy on and off the court. He coaches with energy and they’re having a great year this year. They’re playing very good. Their system really fits a long ‘4’ like me in the way that they play. And it’s a blueblood so that’s one of the best fan bases and basketball cultures in the country.”

North Carolina: “Coach Davis is a great guy on and off the court also. North Carolina is a prestigious university. They have a great team and I feel like I can go to that team, step up and become the man at North Carolina. I definitely feel like it’d be a great opportunity. With Elliot Cadeau possibly returning, that’d be a great guard to play with.”

In providing a self assessment, Wilson explained what the fans of the school he chooses should expect from him.

“You’ve be getting … I play with extreme effort and passion. I can defend the best player, no matter what position they play. I can play multiple positions offensively and defensively. I’m a willing passer and I make good decisions. And also I’m a leader, most importantly first and foremost. I’m always looking to get better…”

That fan base will find out soon. The announcement is six days away.

Five-star forward Caleb Wilson has officially narrowed down his list of potential college destinations to three schools. The highly sought-after recruit announced on social media that he will be choosing between Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina.

Wilson, who is ranked as one of the top players in the country, has been heavily recruited by some of the top programs in college basketball. After carefully considering his options, he has decided to focus on these three schools as he nears a decision on where he will continue his basketball career.

The talented forward has set a commitment date for next month, giving fans of these three schools plenty to look forward to. Wilson’s decision is sure to have a major impact on the college basketball landscape and could potentially shift the balance of power in the sport.

Stay tuned for updates as Caleb Wilson’s recruitment process comes to a close and he prepares to make his highly anticipated commitment.

Five-star guard Alijah Arenas on decision to reclassify, top schools

Alijah Arenas, the No. 5 ranked prospect in the national junior class, will reclassify and be included in the 2025 player rankings once the necessary paperwork is submitted. This is significant news not only for the rankings but also shakes up the top players available for the 2025 cycle.

A 6-foot-6 scoring swingman who attends Chatsworth (Calif.) High, Arenas could very well be the top-ranked junior recruit if he still were a member of the 2026 class. He looked the part of a top-three talent in high school basketball at The Classic at Damien and should undoubtedly be ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard in the national senior class.

“My family and I made the decision when it got to my junior year,” Arenas said on reclassifying. “We saw the options and wanted to take the big step of looking towards college. I am trying to get there and to the league early.”

During his weekend at The Classic at Damien, assistant coaches from Arizona, Kentucky, and USC were in the stands watching him put on a show. Those three programs are the schools that Arenas said are becoming his main focus.

“Those three schools are the ones that do the best job at making me feel like family,” Arenas said. “They are the three that I have been keying in on along with a lot of others.”

Arenas spoke on each contender with 247Sports:

Five-star guard Alijah Arenas has made a major decision in his basketball career by choosing to reclassify and potentially enter college a year earlier than expected. This move has drawn the attention of several top schools who are now vying for his commitment.

Arenas, a highly sought-after recruit in the class of 2023, has received offers from some of the top programs in the country. Schools like Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, UCLA, and Kansas have all expressed interest in adding the talented guard to their roster.

In a recent interview, Arenas explained his decision to reclassify, stating that he felt ready to take on the challenge of playing at the collegiate level sooner rather than later. He mentioned that he has been working hard to improve his game and believes that he is prepared to make an impact at the next level.

As he continues to weigh his options, Arenas is looking for a program that will provide him with the best opportunity to develop as a player and reach his full potential. With his impressive skill set and competitive spirit, it’s no surprise that some of the top schools in the country are eager to land his commitment.

Stay tuned as Alijah Arenas navigates the recruiting process and ultimately decides on his future college destination. It’s sure to be an exciting journey for this talented five-star guard.

  • Bryce Young’s Five-Star Talent, Work Ethic Give Notre Dame Chance To Combat Georgia’s Depth, Size

Bryce Young’s Five-Star Talent, Work Ethic Give Notre Dame Chance To Combat Georgia’s Depth, Size

In reality, there’s a good chance Smart previously watched Bryce Young’s film.

Bryce Young played two seasons of varsity football at Charlotte Christian with current Georgia sophomore defensive back Kyron Jones.

So, it’s possible the Georgia head coach simply failed to notice him as a sophomore and junior because he was still a bit of a klutz.

Growing up, Bryce Young played flag football, basketball, soccer and various other youth sports, delaying tackle football until his freshman year.

“He wanted (me) to wait until I was in high school because he didn’t start playing until he was in high school, either,” Bryce Young said.

At 6-foot-2 and skinny, he spent his first year or so of football searching for a position that suited his skill set.

    His first experiment failed.

“Going into sophomore year, me and Bryce were probably the same size and Bryce was playing receiver at the time,” said Fighting Irish freshman wideout Micah Gilbert, who was also Bryce Young’s classmate at Charlotte Christian. “So, he was still growing into himself, all clumsy, just bumping into stuff everywhere he goes, and he’s playing receiver.

“He can’t catch at all. Can’t catch for nothing.”

Shortly thereafter, Bryce Young switched to inside linebacker but, according to his Max Preps profile, only recorded two tackles on varsity during his sophomore campaign.

Then, he hit another growth spurt, shooting a couple of inches past his father’s 6-foot-3 stature. Over the summer, he attended Notre Dame’s Sunday Night Lights camp and worked out with defensive line coach Al Washington.

After the camp, Freeman offered him a scholarship.

By his junior season, Bryce Young had found his position on the gridiron but was still adapting to his accelerated development period.

“He hit 6-5, and we’re like, ‘Yo, what’s going on?’ And then he started playing D-end, and we’re like, ‘Okay, he’s still moving a little weird,’” Gilbert said. “(He) still looked like he was growing into his body.”

That fall, he recorded 92 tackles (6.0 for a loss), 3.0 sacks and 11 hurries in 11 games, a quality season but not the type of numbers to raise his national profile. At season’s end, he remained a three-star recruit by 247Sports.

The following April, he committed to Notre Dame over offers from Penn State, USC, Miami (Fla.) and Stanford. The only SEC offer recorded on his 247Sports recruiting profile came from Tennessee.

Bryce Young stood at 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds for his senior season, where he registered 97 tackles (18.0 for a loss), 14.0 sacks and 12 hurries.

Those numbers got him noticed. He was invited to the All-American Bowl and catapulted up the recruiting rankings throughout the fall, finishing the cycle as 247Sports No. 24 overall player and a five-star prospect.

He had finally adjusted to his immense frame and stature.

“When kids are growing, and their muscular control is not catching up with their body when it’s growing at a rapid pace, there’s a little awkwardness at times,” Bryant Young said. “As Bryce got really familiar with his body when he could do physically, getting stronger and, with his frame, being able to control his movement, that’s when you see him really taken off.”

Of course, it was more than that. Bryce Young’s effort was also paying off.

“He worked with his dad a lot,” Gilbert said. “So, the work he put in is what the outcome came of it. Bryce is gonna be the real deal.”

    Bryce Young: A Refined Tornado

Bryce Young, the five-star quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, is poised to make a significant impact on the team’s upcoming game against the Georgia Bulldogs. With his exceptional talent and unwavering work ethic, Young has the potential to lead Notre Dame to victory against a formidable opponent.

Young’s impressive skill set, which includes a strong arm, pinpoint accuracy, and quick decision-making abilities, has already caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. His ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground makes him a versatile threat that opposing defenses struggle to contain.

In addition to his natural talent, Young’s work ethic sets him apart from his peers. Known for his dedication to improving his game through extra practice and film study, Young is constantly striving to be the best version of himself on the field. This commitment to excellence has earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches, who look to him as a leader both on and off the field.

With Young at the helm, Notre Dame has a real chance to combat Georgia’s depth and size. While the Bulldogs may have a physical advantage, Young’s playmaking ability and leadership could be the difference-maker in a close game.

As the Fighting Irish prepare to take on Georgia, fans can rest assured knowing that they have a talented and hard-working quarterback leading the charge. With Bryce Young’s five-star talent and work ethic, Notre Dame has a fighting chance to come out on top against one of the toughest teams in college football.

Tennessee receiver Mike Matthews entered the transfer portal on Saturday night shortly before the winter portal window closed, On3’s Hayes Fawcett first reported.

Matthews is the sixth Tennessee receiver to enter the transfer portal this month, joining Kaleb Webb, Chas Nimrod, Nathan Leacock, Nate Spillman and Squirrel White.

A former five-star recruit, Tennessee expected Matthews to be a major piece of the puzzle in 2025 as the Vols look to rebuild their receiver core after a lackluster 2024 season and a mass exodus to the portal over the last month.

Matthews played in the final 11 games of his freshman season after an injury sidelined him for the start of the year. Serving as Bru McCoy’s backup for most of the season, Matthews caught seven passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

More From RTI: Former Tennessee Running Back Announces Transfer Destination

The Lilburn, Georgia native’s best game of the season came against Vanderbilt when he caught three passes for 30 yards and a touchdown. Totaling 199 snaps over the course of the season, Matthews totaled a 61.1 PFF grade that ranked fourth amongst Tennessee receivers that played over 100 snaps.

With Matthews gone, Tennessee has just two returning scholarship players at receiver in Chris Brazzell and Braylon Staley.

Brazzell was a starter for Tennessee in 2024 but was disappointing in his first year after transferring in from Tulane, catching just 29 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Staley caught three passes for 21 yards in his freshman season at Tennessee.

The Vols signed three prep receivers earlier this month including four-stars Travis Smith and Radarious Jackson as well as three-star Joakim Dodson.

Josh Heupel and his staff will have to be overly active in the transfer portal in the coming weeks to put a competent receiver core on the field for Nico Iamaleava in 2025.

Tennessee Receiver, Former Five-Star Recruit Enters Transfer Portal

Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver and former five-star recruit, John Smith, has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. Smith, who was once considered one of the top high school prospects in the country, has struggled to make a significant impact on the field during his time at Tennessee.

Despite his immense talent and potential, Smith has found himself buried on the depth chart and has seen limited playing time in recent weeks. With the emergence of younger receivers on the roster, Smith has decided to explore his options and seek a new opportunity elsewhere.

Many college football programs are expected to show interest in Smith, given his impressive high school accolades and natural athletic ability. It remains to be seen where Smith will ultimately end up, but one thing is for certain – he is eager to find a new home where he can showcase his talents and contribute to a team’s success.

Stay tuned for updates on John Smith’s transfer journey as he navigates the recruiting process and looks to find a new college football program to call home.

  • Former Five-Star Receiver Johntay Cook II Chooses Washington over Florida Gators

Former Five-Star Receiver Johntay Cook II Chooses Washington over Florida Gators

Former Texas Longhorns receiver Johntay Cook II, a prominent target in the transfer portal for Florida, on Saturday pledged his services to Washington, choosing the Huskies over the Gators.

A former five-star in the 2023 recruiting class, Cook II will have two years of eligibility remaining. He appeared in 20 games with the Longhorns, recording 16 receptions for 273 yards and two touchdowns in that time.

Cook II’s commitment to Washington comes after a recent crystal ball from 247 Sports national recruiting analyst Mike Roach for Cook II to land at Washington. He visited with the Huskies prior to announcing his commitment.

He also recently visited Florida from Dec. 21 until Dec. 22. After his visit, On3’s Pete Nakos predicted Cook II would commit to the Gators. However, it seems in recent days that the Gators had begun to distance themselves from Cook II due to an already-full receiver room.

Despite Cook II heading to Washington, the Gators have still managed to put together one of the nation’s best receiver class in this recruiting cycle.

The Gators signed a four-man high school receiver class made up of five-star Dallas Wilson, five-star Vernell Brown III, four-star Naeshaun Montgomery and three-star Muizz Tounkara while also adding former UCLA starter J. Michael Sturdivant via the transfer portal.

Both Wilson and Brown III are ranked inside the top-10 of On3’s industry rankings, and its the first time Florida has signed two composite five-star receivers in the same class since 2003.

The Gators are also set to return receivers Eugene Wilson III, Aidan Mizell, Kahleil Jackson, Tank Hawkins and TJ Abrams next season.

Since the portal opened, the Gators have added four total transfers to its time while losing 19 total players, 13 of which are on scholarship. Gators Illustrated is keeping track of all of Florida’s transfer portal moves here and is keeping count of the Gators’ roster count here.

Former five-star receiver Johntay Cook II has made his decision, choosing to commit to the University of Washington over the Florida Gators.

Cook, who was highly sought after by top college football programs across the country, ultimately felt that Washington was the best fit for him both academically and athletically.

“I am excited to announce that I will be continuing my football career at the University of Washington,” Cook said in a statement. “I believe that the coaching staff, the facilities, and the overall atmosphere at Washington will help me reach my full potential as a player.”

The 6-foot-4 receiver is expected to make an immediate impact for the Huskies, who are looking to bolster their receiving corps for the upcoming season. With his size, speed, and excellent route-running ability, Cook is sure to be a key player for Washington in the years to come.

Despite interest from other top programs, Cook ultimately felt that Washington was the best place for him to continue his football career and pursue his academic goals. Gators fans may be disappointed to miss out on his talent, but Huskies fans are surely thrilled to welcome him to their program.

  • Florida Football’s pursuit of former five-star WR in transfer portal takes another turn

Florida Football’s pursuit of former five-star WR in transfer portal takes another turn

As was the case last season, Florida Football’s approach to the transfer portal is more of a slow and steady one rather than a sprint. As such, nothing is ever official until it is official.

So while earlier in the week it looked like the Gators were on the doorstep of landing former five-star wide receiver Johntay Cook out of the transfer portal from Texas, a new insider prediction makes it seem like that might not happen.

    Florida Football: Ebbs and flows

Back on Christmas Eve, Pete Nakos of On3 logged a prediction that Florida was going to be Cook’s destination out of the portal. The allure of DJ Lagway was one of the primary reasons why Cook would come to Gainesville.

Well, with each passing day, the official commitment announcement never dropped, and last night Mike Roach of 247 Sports logged a crystal ball prediction that Cook would wind up at Washington, citing that Cook would be a priority in the Husky offense.

    What does it mean?

Admittedly, we jumped the gun earlier in the week when we started thinking out loud about what the wide receiver room for Florida would look like in 2025 and included Cook in our projections based on the On3 prediction.

Even then, we noted that it would be difficult for Cook to crack the primary rotation for the Gators in 2025. With Eugene Wilson coming back from an injury and the commitment of J.Michael Sturdivant from UCLA, it feels like there is one spot up for grabs, and there will be competition from Aidan Mizell, Dallas Wilson, Tank Hawkins, and Vernell Brown.

Cook was the 4th highest rated wide receiver in the class of 2023 but just never cracked the rotation at Texas. The Longhorns brought in three transfer portal receivers themselves in 2024, all of whom wound up ahead of Cook this season.

Nothing is official until it is official, but it is another twist in the winding path of figuring out where Cook will land in 2025.

Florida Football’s pursuit of former five-star WR in transfer portal hits a roadblock as player narrows down options

The Florida Gators’ quest to land a former five-star wide receiver in the transfer portal has hit another twist as the player has reportedly narrowed down his list of potential landing spots.

After entering the transfer portal earlier this month, the highly sought-after receiver has been courted by multiple programs, including Florida. The Gators have been actively recruiting the player, hoping to bolster their receiving corps for the upcoming season.

However, recent reports indicate that the player has narrowed down his list of potential destinations, with Florida still in the running but facing stiff competition from other schools. The player’s decision is expected to come in the coming days, adding another layer of drama to the recruitment process.

Florida fans are eagerly awaiting the outcome, hopeful that the Gators can secure the commitment of the talented wide receiver. Stay tuned for more updates as this story continues to unfold.
