Colorado Avalanche Breaking News: Mackenzie Blackwood signs five-year extension

    Merry late Christmas Avalanche fans!

The Colorado Avalanche gave fans a late gift with the signing of Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year extension. The 28-year-old netminder signed for an AAV of $5.25 million.

Blackwood has always been an underrated goaltender playing up to his potential on uncompetitive teams. Now signed long-term, he has a chance to prove himself on a competitive team.

Likewise, the Avs have finally invested in a goaltender and are giving him a solid look. Considering Colorado had two goaltenders under less AAV than Blackwood’s to start the season, it’s a considerate change of pace. The last goaltender to sign for three years or longer was Semyon Varlamov in 2013-14.

Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland said after acquiring Blackwood that he would not be a short-term rental, and this deal proves that. He will be in Colorado until the end of the 2029-30 season and have Scott Wedgwood alongside him through the end of next season, keeping the Lumberyard intact until then.

In Blackwood’s 219 games played, he has 84 wins, 11 shutouts, a 3.05 goals-against average, and a save percentage of .905. In just his four games in Colorado, he’s been a breath of fresh air with three wins in four games, a 2.03 goals-against average, and a save percentage of .931.

Looking forward, however, this does challenge things cap-wise. The Avs still need to re-sign Mikko Rantanen, who has been rumored to get around $14 million. Plus, you’ve got to worry about re-signing other players down the line such as Jonathan Drouin, Artturi Lehkonen, and Cale Makar. And finally, there’s the ever-present question mark of Gabriel Landeskog and whether or not he will return and have his cap hit impact the lineup.

Nonetheless, the Avalanche has its goaltender for the future. What do you think of the signing? Let us know in the comments below!

The Colorado Avalanche have made a major move to solidify their goaltending situation, as they have signed Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year contract extension. The deal is reportedly worth $25 million, locking up the 25-year-old netminder through the 2026-27 season.

Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the New Jersey Devils last season, has quickly established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league. In 44 games with Colorado, he has posted a 2.47 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, helping lead the team to the top of the standings in the Western Conference.

With this extension, the Avalanche have secured their goaltending future for the foreseeable future, as Blackwood will now be a key piece of their roster for the next five years. Fans can expect to see even more stellar performances from the young goaltender as he continues to develop and improve in the coming seasons.

Stay tuned for more updates on this breaking news story as it develops.

Mackenzie Blackwood Signs Five-Year Extension With the Avalanche

The Avalanche have locked up their new No. 1 goalie.

Mackenzie Blackwood signed a five-year contract extension on Friday, keeping him with the team through the 2029-30 season. He’ll make $5.25 million per season according to Sportsnet’s NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.

Blackwood is 3-1-0 in four starts with the Avalanche since being acquired. He’s allowed just two goals in each game and has a sparkling .931 save percentage. Colorado scored just once in his lone loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

The Avs acquired Blackwood on Dec. 9 in a multi-piece trade with the San Jose Sharks. They sent goalie Alexandar Georgiev and forward Nikolai Kovalenko back the other way. Blackwood was brought in nine days after general manager Chris MacFarland traded for his former tandem teammate Scott Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators. He completely revamped Colorado’s goaltending in short order.

Wedgewood is under contract through 2025-26 carrying a cap hit of $1.5 million. The Avs’ goalies will eat up $6.75 million of their salary cap next season.

Blackwood, 28, was a pending unrestricted free agent and is playing out the tail end of a two-year deal worth $2.35 million per season. MacFarland said at the time of the trade that the team had envisioned Blackwood to be a long-term fit. Colorado has had four starting goalies in less than five full seasons.

This is their first long-term commitment to a goaltender since 2014.

“When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives,” MacFarland said in a team press release. “We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years.”

The Avs started the season 0-4 and had an inconsistent first six weeks to the season. Their goaltending was at the center of the criticism because of their poor play. Both Justus Annunen and Georgiev struggled and ultimately lost the team’s trust. Colorado was ranked 32nd in October and 31 in November in save percentage.

“As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts. He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender,” MacFarland said. “Stylistically, he has fit really well with how we play and has been a perfect fit in our dressing room as well.”

Blackwood has not yet made a playoff appearance. He’s 84-92-25 in 204 starts, playing mostly for rebuilding teams outside of the playoff picture.

The Colorado Avalanche have locked in their goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood for the long haul, signing him to a five-year contract extension. The deal, reportedly worth $25 million, solidifies Blackwood as a key piece of the team’s future.

Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the New Jersey Devils last season, has quickly established himself as a top-tier goalie in the league. In his first season with Colorado, he posted a 2.73 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, helping lead the team to a deep playoff run.

With Blackwood now signed long-term, the Avalanche can confidently build around their star netminder as they aim for a Stanley Cup championship. Fans can look forward to seeing Blackwood continue to stand tall between the pipes for years to come. #GoAvsGo #BlackwoodExtension

Avalanche sign goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to five-year extension

The Colorado Avalanche appear to have found someone they like after some serious turnaround between the pipes.

Colorado inked goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year contract extension after trading for him earlier this season, the team announced Friday.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the deal is worth $26.25 million, with a $5.25 million AAV.

The Avs acquired Blackwood on Dec. 9, sending Alexandar Georgiev to the San Jose Sharks in a goalie swap.

Blackwood was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The 28-year-old has provided a needed boost between the pipes for the Avs in the four games, helping them to a 3-1-0 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.

He had a 6-9-3 record with a 2.78 GAA and a .909 save percentage in 19 games with the Sharks before being traded.

In the deal for Blackwood, the Sharks also received forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and a 2026 second-round pick, while the Avalanche also got forward Givani Smith and a 2027 fifth-rounder.

The Avalanche also traded for goaltender Scott Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators earlier this year, completely revamping their goaltending tandem.

Colorado has won three straight and seven of 10 en route to a 21-15-0 record, good for third in the Central division. It’s set to take on the Utah Hockey Club on Friday night.

The Avalanche have locked in their goaltending future by signing Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year extension!

Blackwood has been a standout player for the team, consistently delivering strong performances and earning the trust of his teammates and coaches. With this new deal, the Avalanche are showing their commitment to building a solid foundation in net for years to come.

Fans can expect to see Blackwood continue to excel between the pipes and play a key role in the team’s pursuit of a Stanley Cup. Congratulations to Mackenzie Blackwood on securing his future with the Avalanche! #GoAvsGo #NHLSigning #MackenzieBlackwood.
