Ranji Trophy 2024-25 – IPL-like scenes in Delhi as fans flock to watch Virat Kohli play

The Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Railways was to start at 9.30am, but fans were lined up outside the Arun Jaitley Stadium from 5am itself. They were afraid they might not find a seat in the limited stands available for the game and, therefore, would miss a chance to see their favourite, Virat Kohli, in action. These fans had come not only from the NCR region but also from the surrounding states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan.

On Wednesday morning, when this reporter reached the Delhi Gate metro station, the closest one to the stadium, the scene was completely different from other Ranji matches. There was a huge crowd both inside and outside the metro station, just like during an IPL match, and was shouting “Kohli, Kohli… RCB, RCB”.

Two law students, Tejas and Nirvan, had come from Sonipat, Haryana. When asked if they had come for Kohli, Tejas jokingly said, “No brother, we have come to support the Railways team.” And both burst out laughing. “We have come here just to see Virat Kohli, else who bunks classes to watch a Ranji match,” Nirvan said.

On the way to the stadium, the crowd had increased manifold. Thousands of spectators were in front of Gate 15 and 16, waiting for the gates to be opened. There was even a stampede briefly but the police controlled it immediately and no one was hurt.

There crowd had people of all ages and backgrounds. Vijay Sharma, a Noida resident, had taken leave from his office so that he could bring his wife and two daughters to the match and they could watch their favourite cricketer playing.

When the gates finally opened at 9am, the Gautam Gambhir stand, with a capacity of about 6500, was filled in a jiffy. And there were people still outside the gate. Seeing that, the DDCA officials decided to open the Bishan Singh Bedi stand as well. Only after that, everyone was able to enter the stadium.

However, they must have been a bit disappointed when Delhi captain Ayush Badoni opted to field after winning the toss. But as soon as Kohli walked onto the field, they filled the entire stadium with the chants of “Kohli, Kohli” and “RCB, RCB”. When Kohli acknowledged them by waving his hand, the chants grew louder.

During the 11th over of the day, a spectator broke the barricading, reached Kohli who was standing in slips, and touched his feet. The security personnel ran after him and escorted him back. After this, Special Task Force personnel were deployed along the boundary line. Perhaps because they were not aware, they ended up roaming in front of the sightscreen, which caused a couple of short stoppages.

During the first session, when Railways lost five wickets for 66, the fans’ hopes of seeing Kohli bat increased. But a partnership of 104 in 33 overs between Upendra Yadav and Karn Sharma dashed them. This possibility again gained momentum when Navdeep Saini took two wickets in two balls just before tea. But once again, a half-century partnership put paid to it.

With the chances of Kohli batting fading, the spectators started leaving. By the end of the day, half of them had left. But with Delhi 41 for 1 at stumps, and Kohli one wicket away from walking in, expect them to be lined up outside the stadium at 5am once again.

Kohli’s presence has undoubtedly added to the excitement, with spectators eager to catch a glimpse of the cricketing legend in action.

The stadium has been packed to capacity for every match, with tickets selling out well in advance as fans clamor for a chance to watch Kohli and his team in action.

The scenes in Delhi have been reminiscent of IPL matches, with fans bringing banners, flags, and jerseys to show their support for their favorite players. The energy in the stadium is palpable, with chants of “Kohli, Kohli” echoing throughout the stands.

Thousands Flock to Berry College to Hear Civil Rights Icon Speak

Civil rights icon Ruby Bridges, one of the first Black students to integrate an all-white elementary school in 1960, spoke to nearly 2,000 people at Berry College on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Her conversation, facilitated by Berry student Sydney Layne in the College Chapel was also simulcast to an overflow crowd comprised of students, staff, faculty and community members. Berry officials estimated about 2,000 people attended.

Bridges said she was one of 150 Black children selected to take a rigorous day-long test to make sure they were smart enough to attend the integrated schools.

“I remember taking this test and I remember that because it was the first time that I had taken the streetcar in New Orleans. And that was exciting for me, you know. I really need you all to keep in mind that what protected me was the innocence of a child,” she told the audience.

Only six children were able to pass the test, which Bridges said was set up to eliminate students. Then eventually due to pressure, five of the children dropped out.

“So the first day came, I was still thinking that I am just about the smartest person in the city and I remember that all of my parents’ friends came over to the house that morning to dress me for school.
It seemed like a really, really big deal. And that did not happen on my first day going to kindergarten,” Bridges said.

There was a knock at the door and four “very tall white men” were standing at the door. “I remember looking at them and thinking to myself, who are they? And who told them I needed to ride?” she said.

The men were U.S. marshals to escort her safely to William Frantz Elementary school.

“The car turned the corner (to the school) and I saw what most of the country saw.
Lots of people standing out in front of the school and they were screaming and shouting and were waving their hands and throwing things,” she said, noting that being in New Orleans she assumed it was some kind of Mardi Gras parade.

“How was I to know that the crowd outside was there to harm me, that they didn’t want me there. No six-year-old would come to that conclusion unless you told them. And my parents didn’t do that. I think that was the best decision for them to make. But it speaks to the fact that racism really is a grown-up disease. Each and every one of our babies come into the world with a clean heart, a fresh start in life. That’s our gift.”

Bridges currently works as a Civil Rights activist, author and speaker. She established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to provide leadership and training programs to inspire community leaders to embrace diversity. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in March 2024.

The event at Berry was part of the Conson Wilson Lecture Series and is sponsored by GHD Foundation, Berry’s corporate diversity partner. This school year is also the 60th anniversary of the college’s integration and the start of Be Love Week which is a time to embody Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service and Berry’s motto, “not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” From January 20–24, 2025, students, staff, and faculty will join forces with community partners to focus on housing support, food assistance, and youth development.

Berry College, located in Rome, Georgia, was buzzing with excitement as thousands of people gathered to hear civil rights icon and activist, John Lewis, speak on campus.

Lewis, who is a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and a current U.S. congressman, delivered a powerful and inspiring speech to the massive crowd. His message of equality, justice, and unity resonated with the audience, many of whom were moved to tears by his words.

The event was organized by the college’s student government association and drew attendees from all walks of life, including students, faculty, community members, and politicians. The overwhelming turnout demonstrated the enduring impact and importance of Lewis’s work in the fight for civil rights.

As the sun set over the picturesque campus, Lewis’s words served as a reminder of the progress that has been made in the struggle for equality, while also highlighting the work that still needs to be done. The event was a powerful reminder of the power of one person’s voice to inspire change and unite a community.

Overall, the event was a huge success, and attendees left feeling inspired and motivated to continue the fight for justice and equality in their own lives and communities. Thousands flocked to Berry College to hear a true civil rights icon speak, and they left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to create a more just and equitable world.

Trump inauguration gathers Musk, Bezos and TikTok CEO as billionaires flock to the Capitol

Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg walk into a bar.

Sounds like the start of a joke, right? If only it were.

Today, the three richest men in the world according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index will come together for the inauguration of Donald Trump. It’s a picture-perfect snapshot of what we can expect over the next four years: an administration built around delivering for big business. And for the next 100 days and after, it’s what we’re going to be tracking at “The 11th Hour.” We’re calling it “White House: For Sale?”

Today, the three richest men in the world will come together for the inauguration of Donald Trump.

In his farewell address from the Oval Office on Wednesday night, President Joe Biden cautioned: “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead.”

It’s a stark warning. Pay attention.

Follow MSNBC’s live blog for the latest updates and expert analysis on Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Trump is already hard at work filling key posts in his administration with billionaires and millionaires. Howard Lutnick, Trump’s pick for commerce secretary, is reportedly worth $2 billion. Linda McMahon, tapped to lead the Department of Education, has a net worth of $2.6 billion. All told, there could be more than a dozen billionaires working in multiple federal agencies, not to mention the quasi-governmental workers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, co-chairs of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

Meanwhile, the biggest names in tech keep popping up at Mar-a-Lago to visit Trump. Musk, Bezos and Zuckerberg have all trooped down to Florida over the past few weeks. The CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, made the pilgrimage in December as well. Fighting to keep his company in business in the U.S., Chew is now expected to join his social media peers at the inauguration, along with Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.

Perhaps it’s not surprising to see this much money and power mingling with the incoming president and his administration. The revolving door of lobbyist to White House staffer to lobbyist, and from CEO to Cabinet secretary and back again, isn’t exclusive to one political party. Money in politics has been a problem in both Republican and Democratic administrations.

But since the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, this problem has gotten worse. (Somewhat ironically, tomorrow marks 15 years since the ruling.) Citizens United opened the floodgates to unlimited spending on elections by corporations, special interest groups and, eventually, individuals.

And give they did.

According to OpenSecrets, outside groups spent a total of $574.5 million during the 2008 election cycle. Four years later — and two years after Citizens United — that amount more than doubled to $1.3 billion. In 2024, it hit a whopping $4.5 billion. That’s a 680% increase from 2008 to 2024 in money from corporations, super PACs and individuals.

Which leads us back to where we are at today, at the beginning of a new administration led by arguably one of the most transactional presidents in modern history.

Which leads us back to where we are at today, at the beginning of a new administration led by arguably one of the most transactional presidents in modern history. When Trump was in office last time, his company owned a hotel blocks away from the White House where foreign leaders and special interest groups booked rooms and hosted lavish parties. Once Trump left Washington, the Trump Organization sold the lease rights of that hotel. Now, it’s talking about reacquiring them again.

In this Trump White House, Fortune 500 companies know what to expect. They see the dealmaking and they’re going to do what they believe is in the best interest of their business, for their shareholders, employees and customers. Donations to the inauguration are on track to reach almost $200 million, nearly double the amount in 2017.

That doesn’t mean that what gets decided in this second administration will be in the best interests of the American people. What it does mean is that we, all of us, need to watch what’s happening in Washington, and to remain clear-eyed about what we could be in for. You keep paying attention. And so will we.

Charlie Herman contributed.

On January 20th, 2021, the inauguration of President Donald Trump brought together some of the wealthiest individuals in the world as billionaires flocked to the Capitol to witness the historic event. Among those in attendance were tech moguls Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and the CEO of TikTok.

The presence of Musk, Bezos, and the TikTok CEO at the inauguration highlights the influence and power that billionaires hold in today’s society. These individuals not only have immense wealth, but also significant political and societal influence.

As the Trump administration begins its next term, it is clear that the support and attention of billionaires will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country. With their vast resources and connections, these individuals have the ability to impact policy decisions and shape the direction of the nation.

The presence of Musk, Bezos, and the TikTok CEO at the inauguration serves as a reminder of the close ties between wealth and power in the United States. As these billionaires continue to amass wealth and influence, their role in shaping the country’s future will only become more significant.

Bird flu detected in commercial poultry flock in Georgia, officials say

What caused first severe bird flu case in U.S.?

Breaking down what caused the first severe bird flu case in U.S.

01:20

Bird flu was detected in a commercial poultry flock in Georgia for the first time since the current outbreak started in 2022, officials announced on Friday.

The positive case of the H5N1 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was found in Elbert County. It was confirmed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

This marks the fifth detection of the virus in a flock in the state, but the first one in a commercial poultry operation. Last week, GDA officials announced that the virus was found in a flock of 13 chickens and ducks in Clayton County.

“This is a serious threat to Georgia’s number one industry and the livelihoods of thousands of Georgians who make their living in our state’s poultry industry,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper. “We are working around the clock to mitigate any further spread of the disease and ensure that normal poultry activities in Georgia can resume as quickly as possible.”

As a result of the detection, all in-state poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, meets and sales have been suspended until further notice.

Earlier this year, a Louisiana resident died after being hospitalized with bird flu, marking the first U.S. death from the H5N1 virus.

Since 2003, the World Health Organization has counted more than 400 deaths from the virus.

Bird flu has been detected in a commercial poultry flock in Georgia, officials confirmed today. The outbreak has raised concerns about the spread of the highly contagious virus to other farms in the area.

According to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the infected flock is located in Chattooga County. The strain of bird flu found in the flock is believed to be the H5N1 virus, which poses a serious threat to both poultry and humans.

Officials are working quickly to contain the outbreak and prevent it from spreading to other farms. Measures such as quarantine and culling of infected birds are being implemented to stop the spread of the virus.

The Department of Agriculture is urging poultry farmers in the area to be vigilant and report any signs of illness in their flocks immediately. The public is also advised to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and to practice proper hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.

The detection of bird flu in a commercial poultry flock in Georgia is a concerning development, but with swift action and cooperation from the community, officials are hopeful that the outbreak can be contained.

Eager visitors flock to see spectacular lava fountaining from Kilauea eruption in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — People were flocking to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Wednesday to get a glimpse of fountaining lava.

The eruption that began Dec. 23 in a crater at the summit of Kilauea volcano has paused periodically. It resumed Wednesday morning as a “small sluggish lava flow,” and then increased into a fountain that appeared to be 200 feet (60 meters) high, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

By the afternoon, visitors to the national park on the Big Island were able to see two fountains from an overlook.

The observatory said it was possible fountain heights would increase as more gas-rich lava erupted.

“The park is already very busy with people eager to see the eruption and we expect visitation to increase as the news gets out again,” Jessica Ferracane, park spokesperson, said in an email.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses the summits of two of the world’s most active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa.

The eruption is visible from many public overlooks in the park. The lava is not posing a hazard to homes or infrastructure.

The recent eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has drawn eager visitors from around the world to witness the spectacular lava fountaining in person. The mesmerizing display of molten rock shooting into the air has captivated onlookers, who have flocked to the area to catch a glimpse of the natural phenomenon.

The eruption, which began in early September, has created a stunning spectacle as lava flows down the mountainside and into the ocean, creating new land formations in the process. The intense heat and power of the volcano have created a sense of awe and wonder among those who have come to witness the event firsthand.

Despite the potential dangers associated with volcanic activity, visitors have been drawn to the area in droves, eager to witness the power and beauty of nature in action. Local authorities have urged caution and reminded visitors to respect the safety barriers put in place to protect them from harm.

As the eruption continues to unfold, more and more people are expected to make the journey to Kilauea to witness the incredible display of lava fountaining. For many, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the raw power of a volcano up close and personal.
